TK Cooper went into battle with Mark Andrews in a rematch from two shows ago alone, a strange sight as the South Pacific Power Couple are usually inseparable. On this occasion it may have cost him the match and a place in the SSS16 as very similar to last show Mark Andrews hit a Shooting Star Press but was unable to get his knees up in time to block it allowing Mandrews to get his win back. </p><p>

Stu Bennett replied telling him to <em>Go away</em> in a non-PG way that shall not be repeated. Zack Gibson took the fight to Stu straight away before Jim Smallman could get the ring announcements done getting large boos and chants mocking him but that wasn’t enough to distract him as Zack Gibson yet again forced Stu Bennett to tap out to the Shankly Gates booking his place in SSS16.</p><p>

Pete Dunne and Daisuke Sekimoto met in a first time matchup that resulted in a lovely, brutal hard hitting hoss fight trading forearms, elbows and brainbusters going all out for 11 minutes until Sekimoto hit an Argentine Backbreaker to keep the Bruiserweight down securing his place in SSS16.</p><p>

Sha Samuels met Mark Haskins in the main event of the evening with the PROGRESS World Title on the line. The two had a great match with Mark Haskins playing the role of a good guy for the first time in a while, whether this is the start of something bigger or just a one off remains to be seen. </p><p> </p><p>

Sha Samuels took control early on in the match wearing down Evil Jesus with all attempts to switch the momentum in his favour quickly shut down by the East End Butcher, that was until a falcon arrow out of nowhere kept Sha down for a 2.9 near count. <em>”BUT NOBODY KICKS OUT THE FALCON ARROW”</em> shouted Glen Joseph on commentary channelling his inner Excalibur.</p><p> </p><p>

23 minutes into the match Sha reached the ropes after Haskins applied the Fujiwara Armbar he’d put away many opponents with recently transitioning into a piledriver that kept Haskins down for the victory to retain his belt.</p><p> </p><p>

Post-match for the third time in as many shows a mysterious person ran into the ring to attack Sha Samuels however this time he received a Lariat for his attempts knocking him to the canvas revealing his face.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/re61aZw.png</span></p><p> </p><p>

Was it Zack Gibson all along? He claimed he wanted attention after being overlooked, he attacked both Haskins and Sha again with the Marty Scurll style umbrella he ran down to the ring with throwing Haskins out before locking in the Shankly Gates to the PROGRESS World Champion.</p><p> </p><p>

The opening contest of the evening saw the first ever Super Strong Style 16 Champion, Will Ospreay, qualify for this years tournament after a springboard cutter was enough to keep Doug Williams down.

Noam Dar and Dave Mastiff had a pretty nasty feud around 2 years ago including a match during the first round of the first SSS16, that rivalry was renewed pretty easily and the two went to war exchanging chops and forearms, almost as if it was a Shibata vs Ishii match in NJPW, leaving both men with bloody, red chests. Eventually it was Noam Dar was was victorious with a Champagne Super Kneebar.

A real clash of styles here as the hard hitting Big Daddy Walter went head to head with The Dazzler Team’s Drew Gulak. Gulak spent the opening minute of the contest trying to take the big man to the ground where he felt he is stronger than the Austrian and when he did there was no looking back locking in a Dragon Sleeper leaving Walter with no choice but to tap out.

In a true technical masterpiece two men not only regarded as Britain’s best but two of the best in the world exchanged a variety of holds and submissions including some that have never been seen before for around 21 minutes until Zack Sabre Jr caught Jack Galalgher in a sleeper hold causing Jack’s body to ragdoll down to the ground allowing ZSJ to hit a Penalty Kick for the win to qualify for the SSS16 pinning the former Tag Team Champion.

I AM LIVERPEWL’S NUMBER ONE ZACK GIBSON, SOON TO BE RECOGNISED AS PROGRESS WRESTLING’S NUMBER ONE, SOON TO BE RECOGNISED AS THE UK’S NUMBER ONE AND SOON TO BE RECOGNISED AS THE WERLD’S NUMBER ONE. TONIGHT I’M BEING FORCED TO TEAM UP WITH A MUPPET OOOOO YOU THINK YOU’RE HARD JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DO A FEW KICKS? COME ROUND MY WAY FOR HALF AN HOUR AND THERE WILL BE A THOUSAND SCOUSERS THAT COULD BEAT YOU UP WITH ONE HAND. AS FOR MY OPPONENTS SHA SAMUELS YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO THIS COUNTRY YOU CLAIM YOU’RE A GOOD OLD FASHIONED BRAWLER WHEN I WILL TAP OUT OUT TONIGHT. I WILL DROP YOU ON THE DECK, WRAP YOUR ARM AROUND YOUR HEAD, LOCK THE SHANKLY GATES AND YOU WILL TAP OUT TO LIVERPOOL’S NUMBER ONE, ZACK GIBSON.

Tommy End was out next looking understandably unhappy with his tag partner’s words towards him. He walked straight towards the ring like a man on a mission staring deep into Gibson’s eyes, slid under the bottom rope and knocked him out with a roundhouse kick before pushing his body out the ring sending his crashing onto the wooden floor with a thud.

Mark Haskins and Sha Samuels then came out amused at what had just taken place, Gibson is out of it which should lead to a rather pain free easy win against a lone Tommy End. They kept control for the majority of the match, there were moments of magic for Tommy but in a handicap situation it was just too much, that was until out of nowhere Tommy caught Haskins with a roundhouse kick out of the air after Evil Jesus went to the top rope. If was then down to a one on one situation of Sha vs Tommy until a groggy Zack Gibson popped up onto the apron and tagged himself in slapping Tommy on the back. He stumbled through the ropes into the ring. Gibson then smiled and began laughing in the face of Sha lifting him up and dropping him with a brainbuster transitioning into the Shankly Gates leaving the PROGRESS Champion tapping out to Liverpool’s Number One.

Chapter 50: Super Strong Style 16 Day One

Brixton Academy,

Commentary Team

RJ Singh and Glen Joseph

The two men widely regarded as the best high fliers in the world finally met in PROGRESS and it certainly didn’t disappoint with enough flips to make pancakes for the whole of London. They went at it for 11 minutes until Ospreay’s springboard cutter was countered into a hurricanrana magically allowing Ricochet to go to the top rope for a 630 to pin the former SSS16 winner in a hot opener.

Adding a little international flair to the first round, Drew Gulak went up against the man 11th in the 2016 PWI Top 500 Ratings, the man known simply as the wrestler, Katsuyori Shibata making his UK Debut. It’s the latter who progress to the second round as a Penalty Kick was enough to keep the American down after a hard fought match with a great mixture of mat based holds and strikes.

Chris Hero returned to PROGRESS and Super Strong Style 16 for the second year in a row and after making the final last year before falling to Mark Haskins he came out a different man this year looking more determined than ever. In his way tonight is no small task of former PROGRESS Champion, Mark Andrews. They told a great story of the underdog Andrews doing all he could to try to ground the big frame of Hero but ultimately coming up short as Hero’s discuss lariat to the back of Mandrew’s head won the match.

In a huge upset, one half of Moustache Mountain, Tyler Bate defeated The Villain, Marty Scurll after a rollup with a handful of tights reversing the Crossface Chicken Wing in 9 minutes after Scurll had control of the match with victory moments away in his first match back from suspension.

Post-match Scurll went mad breaking his umbrella over Tyler before storming out the building through the crowd finding a fire exit. Victorious Tyler limped to the back with help from security.

The first match back from the mid-show break was a step away from SSS16 as the Womens Title match took over as Nixon Newell successfully defended her belt for the first time against challenger Jinny in 11 minutes.

Akira Tozawa of Dragon Gate fame made his highly anticipated PROGRESS debut against the man From a Champagne Supernova, in a Galaxy Far Far Away, Noam Dar. The two had a great match but unfortunately for the Scotsman he got caught in a Bridging German Suplex to allow Tozawa to advance to the next round.

Last show Tommy End laid out Mark Haskins during their tag team match against each other knocking him out however this time it was Evil Jesus who came out victorious with a Bridging Armbar leaving Tommy End with no choice but to tap out after a great match lasting 14 minutes.

In a first time matchup, Daisuke Sekimoto defeated Zack Sabre Jr in 21 minutes after a huge Lariat almost knocked the man from Isle of Sheppey’s head off clean.

Post-match Zack Sabre Jr grabbed a mic once Daisuke had gone to the back.

I’m gonna be honest with you guys, the rumours are all true. The dirtsheets are right. This weekend is my last weekend here at PROGRESS as I’ve signed a full-time contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. It wasn’t an easy decision but it’s one I needed to make, this certainly isn’t how I planned to go out but I will be back here tomorrow and I’m laying down a challenge right now to anyone to face me tomorrow I don’t care who you are, send me a message on twitter or meet me down the pub after the show. I want someone great as my last match and there is no way I’m gonna go out on my back.

Zack Gibson dropped Sha with a brainbuster, wrapped his arm around his head, locked the shankly gates leaving Sha Samuels tapping out for the second show in a row.

THIS IS MY YEAR. shouted Zack Gibson from the stage into the crowd during a chorus of boos to end the show.
