The story so far

The titles

WCW World Heavyweight Championship:

When WCW returned from hiatus with the Big Bang PPV in May 2001, it was with every single title vacated, meaning that all new champions needed to be crowned. The World Title was up for grabs in a battle royal which was won by "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash but--in a surprise non-Russo swerve--new WCW owner Eric Bischoff emerged from the back to announce that Nash shouldn't celebrate just yet because there was one more person for him to defeat. One guitar shot and a Bischoff three count later and "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett walked out of The Big Bang PPV as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion.

"The Total Package" Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell would join forces with Bischoff and Jarrett to create a new stable; "The Chosen Ones", and the group would dominate WCW for the next several months, with Jeff Jarrett making successful title defenses against the likes of Kevin Nash, Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page and "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who had made his return to WCW at Bash at the Beach 2001 as The Insiders's surprise third man as they battled and defeated Totally Buff and Mike Awesome. Jarrett rarely won cleanly, however, and on an episode of Nitro he even helped Totally Buff reclaim the WCW Tag Team Championships two weeks after having lost the titles to Kevin Nash and Randy Savage at New Blood Rising. This made Randy Savage set his sights squarely on Jeff Jarrett, leading to a singles match between the two of them at Fall Brawl, a match which Jarrett won using his usual underhanded tactics. Randy Savage would disappear from WCW following Fall Brawl, with rumors swirling that Savage had retired, while Jarrett prepared to defend his World Title against Sting at Halloween Havoc. During this match, Randy Savage made his return to WCW, preventing Jarrett from using his guitar on Sting like he had done on so many of his opponents--Savage included. Sting would ultimately defeat Jarrett at Halloween Havoc to become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion.

Sting and Jarrett would square off again in a rematch at Mayhem, with Sting defeating Jarrett again. Sting would go on to have successful title defenses against the likes of Lance Storm and Scott Steiner, before defeating Steiner, Jeff Jarrett at Booker T in a four way match at Sin. Sting's last successful title defense was against "The Cat" Ernest Miller on an episode of Monday Nitro. Then, at SuperBrawl 2002, Sting would lose the World Championship to Kevin Nash, in no small part due to interference from Raven, who made a shocking return to WCW to cost Sting the title. A rematch between Nash and Sting has been booked for the upcoming Greed PPV.

WCW United States Championship

Rey Misterio Jr. and Lance Storm squared off at The Big Bang PPV in the final of a tournament to determined the new United States Championship, a match that Rey Misterio Jr. would ultimately win. Rey would defend the title successfully against Mike Sanders, and even managed to defeat "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair at The Great American Bash. Lance Storm would then defeat Rey for the title at Bash at the Beach and defend it successfully against Konnan at New Blood Rising, before losing the title back to Rey in a Ladder match on an episode of Nitro. Rey would hold on to the title for the next four months, defending it successfully against the likes of Shane Douglas (twice), Diamond Dallas Page and Mark Jindrak. Rey would then lose the title to a recently-turned-heel Diamond Dallas Page at Starrcade. DDP is the current champion, having defended the title successfully against the likes of Konnan, Rey Misterio Jr., BG James and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan.

WCW Tag Team Championships

The story of the WCW Tag Team Championships so far is the story of Totally Buff, who defeated Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo at The Big Bang PPV to win the titles. They would go on to have successfuly title defenses against O'Haire and Palumbo, Rey Misterio Jr. and Konnan, and The Mamalukes before losing the titles to Kevin Nash and Randy Savage at New Blood Rising. This defeat was quickly avenged two weeks later on Nitro, however, as Jeff Jarrett helped Totally Buff defeat Nash and Savage to win back the titles. Totally Buff would then defeat first Hugh Morrus and Road Warrior Animal at Fall Brawl, and then the Jung Dragons at Halloween Havoc. The Tag Team Championships would change hands against at Starrcade, however, as O'Haire and Palumbo defeated Totally Buff to become the new champions. Their reign as champions would be short, however, lasting only one month and containing only one successful title defense, that coming against KroniK on an episode of Nitro. Then, at Sin, Totally Buff would capture the Tag Team Championships for a third time, defeating O'Haire and Palumbo with considerable help from KroniK. The win didn't come with a price, however, as Buff Bagwell was injured during the match and would be unable to compete for a while. This meant that Jeff Jarrett would be Lex Luger's tag team partner at SuperBrawl, where they faced off against O'Haire and Palumbo once again. The injured Buff Bagwell was at ringside in a wheelchair during the match but--in another non-Russo swerve--Bagwell would get out of the wheelchair and help Jarrett and Luger win the match, revealing that the injury was fully healed. Totally Buff are the current champions.

WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Billy Kidman defeated Shane Helms, Elix Skipper and Cash at The Big Bang to become the Cruiserweight Champion. Kidman would go on to have a lengthy reign as Champion, holding on to the title from May all the way to November, making numerous successful title defenses along the way, including against the likes of Chavo Guerrero Jr., Shannon Moore, Disco Inferno and many others. Kidman's impressive reign came to an end at Starrcade where he lost the title to Chavo Guerrero in a four way match that also involved Shannon Moore and Cash. Chavo would retain the title successfully against Billy Kidman at Sin and against AJ Styles on an episode of Nitro, but would then lose the title to Shane Helms at SuperBrawl. Shane Helms is the current Champion.

The current storylines

Kevin Nash and Sting are feuding over the World Heavyweight Championship and are set to face each other at Greed, but with Raven's return to WCW, and his focus seemingly being squarely on Sting, things here are complicated to say the least.

The Steiner Brothers are feuding with Booker T and Dustin Rhodes, with the Steiner Brothers having defeated Booker at Rhodes in a tag team match at SuperBrawl. On the most recent episode of Nitro it was revealed that things are far from over, however, as Booker T and Scott Steiner are set to go one on one at Greed, while Dustin Rhodes and Rick Steiner are set to clash as well.

Totally Buff are feuding with Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo over the Tag Team Championships. This one was covered pretty well in the title recap, so I'll just leave it at that.

Diamond Dallas Page has become somewhat of a bitter heel in recent months, complaining about "young punks" like Rey Misterio Jr. stealing the spotlight when they have done nothing to deserve it.

Greed is the next PPV and at Greed at six man "Big Risk" Ladder Match will be held with the winner of the match earning a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Qualifying matches are currently being held, and so far the following people have qualified; Lance Storm, Chris Kanyon and Rey Misterio Jr.

Shane Helms is feuding with Chavo Guerrero over the Cruiserweight Championship, with Chavo dead-set on winning the title back after his own reign was cut short, at least in his own mind, by Shane Helms.

Billy Kidman is feuding with Juventud Guerrera. Ever since returning to WCW, Juvi has been creeping on Torrie Wilson and making unwanted advances, which is pretty much the premise of this feud.

I think that covers things pretty decently. Obviously it's difficult to include all the details, and there are a couple of feuds that I really enjoyed that aren't even mentioned here (Flair vs. "The Cat" was one of my favorite feuds in the game so far), but I think that's just the way it has to be. Of course, if anyone has any questions either now or as we go, feel free to ask and I'll answer what I can.

I seem to have lost my match notes and times for this show (I booked and ran this show before the break) so that's why they are missing on this show. They'll be back for the next one.

Big Risk Ladder Match Qualifier

This week's edition of Monday Nitro kicks off with some hard-hitting in-ring action with a lot on the line as Konnan battles Fit Finlay with a spot in the Big Risk ladder match at Greed on the line. It's a good back and forth match that sees Konnan advance to the ladder match at Greed after making Finlay submit to the Tequila Sunrise.

Konnan defeated Fit Finlay by submission with the Tequila Sunrise. Konnan advances to the Big Risk ladder match at Greed. ©

As Konnan celebrates his big win in the ring, we swing by the announce table where Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Bobby Heenan hype up tonight's main event where the WCW World Heavyweight Champion "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash will take on Chuck Palumbo in a non-title match. They also discuss the fact that Nash will have to put the title on the line against Sting at Greed, and they openly wonder how Raven will factor into things because it seems he is determined to involve himself in Sting's affairs. (B-)

Tony then sends us to the back where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is standing by with "The Cat" Ernest Miller and Miss Jones. Gene asks "The Cat" about his Big Risk qualifying match later tonight against AJ Styles, and "The Cat" says that he is all about the big risk, but only so long as it leads to a big reward and that's exactly what this match does. "The Cat" says that this is his time to shine and nobody is going to stand in his way or keep him from succeeding--neither tonight nor at Greed nor any other night! "I have spoken!" "The Cat" declares before walking off along with Miss Jones as "Mean" Gene sends us back to ringside. ©

"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown is in action next against Kid Romeo. In the short time this match lasts, the announcers talk about how impressive Monty Brown looked during his debut match last week against Johnny Swinger, and his performance tonight is no less impressive as he completely dominates and squashes Kid Romeo in short order, putting him away with the Pounce to earn his second victory in two attempts here in WCW.

We cut to somewhere in the back where Vampiro and Shannon Moore are standing inside a darkened room. Vampiro proceeds to cut an eerie promo, calling himself "The Keeper of Nightmares" and the "Physical Embodiment Of Your Worst Fears Made Real". Vampiro claims to have the power to look deep into your eyes, into your very soul, and see that which terrifies you more than anything else. Vampiro promises to bring a whole new reign of terror and fear to WCW by digging into deepest, darkest, most twisted corners of the human mind...and dragging out the terrifying horrors that lurk within. ©

Elsewhere in the back, Stacy Keibler is with her two clients, Chris Kanyon and Mike Awesome, and while Kanyon seems pleased after earning a spot in the Big Risk ladder match last week, Mike Awesome is furious that he did not and he is cussing out Rey Misterio Jr. for ruining his chances. Stacy tries to get Mike to calm down, promising that she'll do everything she can to make sure Awesome gets a chance to work out some of his frustrations here tonight. As Stacy walks off to do who-knows-what, we cut back to ringside as the announcers speculate just what Stacy is up to now. (B)

Another spot in the Big Risk ladder match is up for grabs next as AJ Styles faces off against "The Cat" Ernest Miller. It is a decent match that sees "The Cat" dominating much of the action, but AJ Styles keeps fighting back, prompting Mike Tenay to praise the heart and potential of AJ Styles. In the end, however, AJ falls short as "The Cat" hits the Feliner and pins Styles to advance to the ladder match at Greed.

Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson are talking backstage and the topic of their conversation is Juventud Guerrera, who has been causing no shortage of problems for Kidman and Torrie as of late. Torrie says that Juventud creeps her out and that she doesn't feel safe with him around, but Kidman promises that he'll take care of Juvi and once he's gets through with him, he'll make sure he gets the message about leaving Torrie alone. As the two walk off down the hall...

pbZkaFms.jpg

Juventud Guerrera walks into the camera's view from the opposite side on the hall with a sly grin on his face. The announcers wonder just how much of that conversation Juventud heard, and what he plans to do about it? (D)

We cut to...somewhere--clearly not inside the building--where Raven is standing in front of the camera, surrounded by the members of his new Flock with Crowbar and Daffney on either side of him while Abyss stands menacingly behind Raven, towering over everyone. Raven does the talking here as usual, saying that he meant it when he said that Sting would never again hold the World Title, and everyone can be sure that he'll be at Greed to make good on his word. Raven says that he will expose Sting's true face to the world and once that is done, once he has brought the people's hero to his knees before their very eyes, that is when he will finally put him out of his misery. "Quote the Raven...nevermore!" (B+)

Cruiserweight tag team action is up next as Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Cash takes on the Cruiserweight Champion, "Sugar" Shane Helms, and Jamie Knoble. This is, as one might expect, a rather fast-paced match that goes back and forth throughout, but it comes to an end when Chavo Guerreo Jr. hits the Gory Bomb and pins Jamie Knoble while Cash and Shane Helms are fighting outside the ring.

Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Cash defeated Jamie Knoble and Shane Helms by pinfall when Chavo pinned Knoble following a Gory Bomb (C-)

After the match, the announcers talk about the momentum Chavo Guerrero Jr. just picked up, earning a tag team victory over the Cruiserweight Champion, even if Helms wasn't the one to get pinned. They briefly talk about Helms facing Chavo for the Cruiserweight Championship at Greed, and then we cut backstage where...

Stacy Keibler is seen walking down the hallway with a determined look on her face until she reaches Rey Misterio Jr.'s locker room. She knocks and walks inside where Rey is with Konnan and BG James, celebrating Konnan's victory in the Big Risk ladder match qualifier earlier tonight. Stacy sarcastically congratulates Konnan, then gets to the point; she says that she feels that Rey got lucky against Mike Awesome last week, and she is here to challenge Rey to a match on Mike Awesome's behalf, saying that if Rey is any kind of a man, he'll accept the challenge. Rey says that he's got no problem accepting the challenge and it seems we've got another match set for later tonight! ©

Back at ringside, the WCW United States Champion, Diamond Dallas Page, comes down to the ring and Page does not look like a happy man after failing to qualify for the Big Risk ladder match last week on Nitro. Page gets on the mic and starts running down Rey Misterio Jr. and other young punks like him, saying that the blatant disrespect he was shown by having to compete against the likes of Rey, when he should have been an automatic addition to the match, speaks volumes about the complete and utter lack of respect he is being shown week in and week out. Page says that the new generations of wrestlers wouldn't know respect if it bit them in the ass, but all of that is going to change because he is going to beat some respect into each and every single one of them. Page is about to continue his promo, but then he is interrupted as "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair's music starts playing...(A)

zah6nFes.jpg

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair makes his way out from the back, making his official return to Monday Nitro after having been away for a while to a standing ovation from the crowd. Flair joins DDP in the ring and Page doesn't look pleased at all with Flair's interruption. Flair says that he's not out here to take anything away from Dallas, but Flair was stylin' and profilin' and winning Championships when Dallas was still driving people to the ring in his cadillac. Flair says that if anybody is a legend in WCW, it's him, and he's here to tell Dallas that he's wrong. Flair admits that he, too, has lost to Rey Misterio, but he also points out that the spotlight isn't given--it's earned. So if Dallas wants to remain in the spotlight, he'll have to earn it like everyone else, legend or not. DDP says that if anyone could possibly understand where he is coming from it would be Flair, but Flair says that he's not out here because he agrees with Page...and then Flair gets to the point; he challenges DDP to a United States Title match at Greed! Page says that if Flair wants his ass kicked at Greed, then he'll be more than happy to do it! Page accepts the challenge, and we've got another huge match set for Greed! (A)

We swing by the announce table but Tony barely gets two words out before he suddenly gets word of some kind of commotion in the back. We cut backstage where referees and officials are trying to separate the Steiner Brothers from Booker T and Dustin Rhodes, as all four men are eager for a fight. Scott Steiner can be heard yelling insults at Booker T and it is all the referees and officials can do to keep the two sides away from each other. As the struggle to maintain order continues, the announcers note that this is just a preview of what we are going to see at Greed when Booker T squares off with Scott Steiner and Dustin Rhodes faces Rick Steiner in singles matches. (B+)

"The Chosen One" is in action next as Jeff Jarrett faces off against Norman Smiley. This is a short and sweet match that sees "Double J" dominating most of it, with Smiley getting only a little bit of offense--and a big wiggle--in before Jarrett puts him away with The Stroke for a decisive victory.

Jeff Jarrett defeated Norman Smiley by pinfall with a Stroke (C-)

The match is over and Jeff Jarrett has picked up another win. Jarrett is calling for a mic in the ring, but before he gets one...

rxMZSbms.jpg

Sean O'Haire's music suddenly hits and O'Haire comes out from the back--much to the surprise of "Double J". O'Haire comes face to face with Jarrett in the ring and it looks like he's got something to say, but instead he suddenly delivers a superkick to the jaw of "The Chosen One", who goes down hard! O'Haire then gets on the mic afterwards and asks Jarrett if he really thought he could help screw them out of the Tag Team Titles and then just return to business as usual, as if nothing had happened? O'Haire then drops the mic and hits a Death Valley Driver on Jarrett before heading up to the top rope for a SeanTon Bomb...

epiwJ9rs.jpgtjPJopWs.jpg

But the WCW Tag Team Champions, Totally Buff, run down to the ring to save Jarrett by pulling him out of the ring before O'Haire can his the SeanTon Bomb. As "The Chosen Ones" retreat back up the ramp, Tony Schiavone notes that Sean O'Haire just sent one heck of a message to Jeff Jarrett! (B+)

TqDQ0Kzs.jpgYJdjdt3s.jpg

We cut to the back where Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson return to Kidman's locker room, apparently unsuccessful in their search for Juventud here tonight. Torrie finds a note addressed to her and, apparently, it is a rather lewd love letter from Juvi to Torrie, which seems to make her uneasy to say the least. Kidman is furious, saying that he's had enough of Juventud's games and when he gets his hands on him, he's gonna put him in his place once and for all. (D+)

qnDHH19s.jpgvs.Gc4aCsxs.jpgw/dNLwm1Ls.jpg

Rey Misterio Jr. faces off against Mike Awesome next in a match that was made earlier tonight. Chris Kanyon isn't by Mike Awesome's side for the match, leading the announcers to speculate if perhaps that is by Mike Awesome's own request because Awesome might feel like he's got something to prove tonight. This is a good match with a two very different styles at play; the quickness and high-flying of Rey Misterio Jr. against the power game of Mike Awesome. The finish to this one comes as Rey bounces off the ropes looking for his Springboard Hurricanrana, but Awesome catches Rey and turns the Hurricanrana into an Awesome Bomb! Awesome covers and picks up the win.

Mike Awesome defeated Rey Misterio Jr. by pinfall with an Awesome Bomb (B-)

We swing by the announce table again where Tony, Mike and Bobby hype up the Greed main event where Kevin Nash will defend the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sting in a rematch from SuperBrawl. Tony says that Greed is shaping up to be a huge event, exactly what you would expect from a WCW PPV. They hype up Greed a bit more, but are then cut off as the Wolfpac music hits, signaling the imminent arrival of the WCW World Champion. (B)

YiAV5xvs.jpgvs.1S9VfKRs.jpg

It's main event time and what a huge opportunity it is for Chuck Palumbo to go one on one against the World Champion, "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, albeit in a non-title match. This one is just a straight up brawl, although Palumbo does use his speed and athleticism to make life difficult to "Big Sexy". In the end, though, Chuck Palumbo might be loaded with potential but he isn't quite on Nash's level yet, and Nash puts Palumbo away with a Jackknife Powerbomb to secure the victory.

Kevin Nash defeated Chuck Palumbo by pinfall with a Jackknife Powerbomb (B-)

7PSSM69s.jpg

The match is over but instead of hearing the Wolfpac music, it's "Seek and Destroy" that starts playing, bringing Sting out from the back to a great ovation from the crowd. Sting makes his way toward the ring to confront Nash, which is something that everyone wants to see, but about halfway down the entrance ramp he is suddenly attacked from behind by....

tnI8bWQs.jpgFrQBvDLs.jpg

Abyss--on Raven's orders! Abyss beats Sting down before finishing off the attack with a horrifying choke slam right on the entrance ramp, and Nitro comes to an end with Raven standing over Sting, doing his signature pose, while Kevin Nash watches from the ring with the World Championship in his hands. (B+)

Final Show Rating: B+

TV Rating: 2.31

And the first Nitro is officially up. I hope it reads okay--I felt rusty as hell writing it but hopefully it isn't too bad. We've got just one more Nitro to go before Greed. There won't be predictions for the next Nitro, but I'll bring the prediction game back at Greed. Hope everyone enjoys Nitro.

A distraction from Stacy Keibler allows Kanyon to get the upper hand on Konnan, and Kanyon and Storm spend the next several minutes isolating and wearing "K-Dawg" down. Comments: I think this is the match that doesn't happen. I feel like if the heels were going to job, then Lex would be in this match, and O'Haire can't really lose without looking like an outnumbered chump, so this feels like someone gets laid out backstage...

Week 2, March, 2002

Live from the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York

Attendance: 7.700 (sellout)

WCW Greed kicks off with an impressive pyro display that brings the fans to their feet. The camera pans through the excited crowd as Tony Schiavone announces that the Herb Brooks Arena is jam-packed to capacity for tonight's pay per view event. We then get a shot of our announce team trio of Tony, Mike Tenay and Bobby Heenan, and they briefly run down the card, with special focus given to the World Title match between Kevin Nash and Sting, the showdown between Scott Steiner and Booker T, and the Big Risk ladder match. We then head to the ring as it is time to kick off Greed with our first match of the night.

rxMZSbms.jpgvs.9umPviHs.jpg

We kick things off in a big way as Sean O'Haire faces off against "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett in a match that O'Haire must win if he and Chuck Palumbo are to get another shot at the WCW Tag Team Championships currently held by Totally Buff. This feud has been building since Starrcade, where O'Haire and Palumbo defeated Totally Buff for the titles, only to lose them back to Luger and Bagwell thanks to interference from Jeff Jarrett. Most of this match is Sean O'Haire chasing Jarrett, with Jarrett using his experience advantage to get under the skin of his more inexperienced opponent, but O'Haire finally gets the better of "Double J" and the match turns into a straight up brawl with O'Haire taking the fight to Jarrett.

epiwJ9rs.jpgtjPJopWs.jpg

This, to the great surprise of absolutely no one, as Tony Schiavone puts it, brings the Tag Team Champions down to ringside. Seconds later, following a distraction from Buff Bagwell, Jarrett retakes control of the match with a low blow and a russian legsweep.

1S9VfKRs.jpg

Chuck Palumbo is out from the back next and he ends up brawling with both Luger and Bagwell at ringside, with the Champions eventually gaining the upper hand thanks to their two on one advantage. With Luger putting the boots to Palumbo outside the ring, Buff Bagwell gets up on the apron and tries to distract the referee...but he gets knocked off the apron for his efforts by Sean O'Haire! O'Haire then turns around and walks right into another low blow, which the referee just barely misses, and Jarrett then hits the Stroke and covers to pick up a very tainted victory in our opening match here at Greed.

Jeff Jarrett defeated Sean O'Haire at 13:38 by pinfall with the Stroke following interference by Totally Buff (B)

After the match, "The Chosen Ones" stand tall in the ring as both Tony and Mike complain about their underhanded tactics but, as Bobby Heenan points out, Jeff Jarrett won the match which means that O'Haire and Palumbo will not get another crack at the Tag Team Championships.

We cut backstage where Konnan is warming up for the Big Risk ladder match later tonight when he is suddenly and viciously attacked by Mike Awesome! Awesome grabs a steel chair and delivers a brutal beatdown, ultimately leaving Konnan down and seemingly unconscious on the floor. How will this affect the Big Risk ladder match later tonight? (D+)

DeMllKws.jpg

As the announcers are still wondering about Konnan's status for the Big Risk ladder match after the brutal attack by Mike Awesome moments ago, we move on to the WCW Cruiserweight Championship title match as "Sugar" Shane Helms is set to take on Chavo Guerrero Jr. "Sugar" Shane makes his way toward the ring, but he is attacked halfway down the ramp by...

A2H6UAIs.jpg4YiUXKDs.jpg

KroniK! Adams and Clark beat Helms down, ultimately planting him in the middle of the ring with a High Times double chokeslam! Then, with Helms down and out...

yjZhkPTs.jpg

Chavo Guerrero Jr. comes down to the ring and steals the Cruiserweight Championship, posing with it in the middle of the ring as Tony and Mike conclude that Chavo must have hired KroniK for the night to carry out that attack on Helms. The Cruiserweight Championship match never happens here tonight at Greed, but Chavo is now in possession of the title belt. (C+)

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgzah6nFes.jpg

In the back, "Mean" Gene Okerlund is standing by with "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. Gene asks Flair about his upcoming United States Championship title match against DDP and Flair tells MEEEAAAANNNN GEEEEENE!!! that he came to Greed tonight for one reason and one reason only; to win the United States Championship. Flair says that after he gets through with DDP, he's hitting New York City for a night on the town the way that only "The Nature Boy" can! WOOO!!!! As Flair walks off, Gene tells us that the US Title match is coming up next. (C+)

WCW United States Championship

hH12gGzs.jpgvs.zah6nFes.jpg

This one starts off with a bit of a slow feeling out process as Mike Tenay points out that these two veterans will make very few mistakes, so that first mistake could end up being the deciding factor in this one. Flair bests DDP with a couple of takedowns and then he does a little bit of stylin' and profilin' much to the Champions frustration. Flair lights up DDP with some hard knife edge chops, and then Page bails out of the ring for a respite, which Bobby Heenan praises as the actions of a true champion. After a few moments on the outside, Page gets back in the ring and delivers few punches, but a thumb to the eye by Flair allows "The Nature Boy" to once again gain the upper hand. The match continues like this a little while longer, with Flair constantly one-upping DDP, until Page has finally had enough. Page leaves the ring, grabs the United States Championship title belt and walks off! The crowd is really letting Page hear it, but Page doesn't care and just lets the referee count him out, much to Flair's frustration in the ring.

Ric Flair defeated Diamond Dallas Page at 6:51 by countout when DDP intentionally got himself counted out. DDP retains the WCW United States Championship (B-)

The match is over and the fans are not happy, and neither is Ric Flair. Once he gets to the top of the ramp, DDP gets on the mic and delivers a very simple message to Ric Flair; "Hey Flair...go screw yourself!" With that message delivered, DDP tosses the mic and disappears into the back. (B)

v4ps6Igs.jpgqnDHH19s.jpgwNECq63s.jpg

Following the disappointing end to the United States Championship title match, we cut backstage to see Konnan being loaded into the back of an ambulance while Rey Misterio Jr. and BG James look on with concerned expressions on their faces (or as concerned as Rey can look with the mask on). It looks like Konnan is officially out of the Big Risk ladder match later tonight thanks to Mike Awesome. (C-)

We cut to a hype package of the long and storied feud between "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner and Booker T, going all the way back to before WCW went on hiatus and all the way up to the tag team match at SuperBrawl and the events of the past two weeks. Tonight it's all coming to a head as Steiner and Booker T go one on one one more time, and that match is coming up next. (B+)

aiJ3oYxs.jpgw/ijZDMfts.jpgvs.O6ChwMws.jpg

As soon as the bell rings in this one, the match turns into an all out brawl and Bobby Heenan quips that he is surprised they even waited for the bell to sound before beating the hell out of each other. The match soon spills out of the ring where Scott Steiner takes control by whipping Booker repeatedly into the guard rail and then slamming his head off the apron of the ring. Mike Tenay notes that this match is not a no disqualification match, so both men need to be careful not to be disqualifed here. "Big Poppa Pump" continues to beat Booker T all around the outside of the ring, using the environment to his advantage with doing enough to cause the disqualification, although he does get admonished by the referee a few times, which doesn't seem to bother Steiner much. Steiner hits a painful looking belly to belly suplex on Booker outside the ring, and then he gets into a mounted position and starts pummeling Booker with big right hand punches, drawing another warning from the referee. Steiner rolls Booker back into the ring and, after jaw jacking with a couple of fans, Scotty rolls into the ring as well. Back in the ring, Steiner starts doing some push-ups before finally turning his attention back to Booker, but Booker has had way too much time to recover and he turns the tables on "Big Poppa Pump" with a surprise kick to the stomach and a snap DDT.

Both men get back to their feet and start trading punches in the middle of the ring, but Booker ducks one of Steiner's right hands and hits a spin kick. Booker then starts building some momentum with a series of clotheslines, a spinning heel kick and finally a flapjack. Booker climbs to the top rope and hits a Harlem Hangover, much to the crowd's delight, but somehow "Big Poppa Pump" is able to kick out after two. The match has lasted a while now and both men are feeling the effects of the grueling fight they are in, which means that both men are moving a little slower than usual. But even though the pace of the match slows, the intense, hard-hitting style remains as Booker and Steiner are beating the hell out of each other here, speaking volumes as to their very heated rivalry. Both men get near-falls on one another, but both men just keep kicking out of whatever the other throws at them. Steiner then hits a Steiner Flatliner and calls the match over...

1...

2...

...NO!!

Booker T kicks out at two and a half and Steiner is livid, arguing with the referee and trying to intimidate him into changing the call to a three count but the referee, to his credit, sticks with the two and a half count despite "Big Poppa Pump" being right up in his face. While Steiner is arguing with the referee, Midajah has Steiner's lead pipe and she places it in the corner of the ring. She then moves around the ring, gets up on the apron and distracts the referee by arguing with him as well, while "Big Poppa Pump" grabs the lead pipe. Mike Tenay notes that Steiner is dangerous enough without the pipe, but with it he becomes almost lethal. Booker slowly gets to his feet and turns around right into a shot with the lead pipe...but Booker is able to duck at the very last split second to avoid the impact. Booker kicks Steiner in the stomach, causing him to drop the pipe, and...SCISSOR KICK!!! Booker covers Steiner and...

1...

2...

...3--NOOO!!!

Somehow Steiner got his shoulder up before the three count, and Booker is wide-eyed in disbelief as he clearly thought he had the match won. Both men are very slow to get up but Booker does get to his feet first. Midajah is back up on the apron and yells something to Booker, which allows Steiner to get to his feet and blast Booker from behind. Steiner whips Booker into the ropes and sets for a back body drop, but Booker is able to stop, kick Steiner in the head and...BOOK END!!! Booker drives Steiner into the mat, then practically falls on top of him in exhaustion as the referee makes the count...

1..

2...

...3!!!!

It was one hell of a battle, but this one is finally over!

Booker T defeated Scott Steiner at 21:39 by pinfall with the Book End (A)

Booker T can barely stand as he gets his hand raised in victory, but both Tony, Mike and even Bobby Heenan give credit to Booker for his performance here tonight, all of them agreeing that we just saw one of the most physically intense matches in the long and storied history of World Championship Wrestling.

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgYiAV5xvs.jpg

Following one hell of a match, we cut backstage to where"Mean" Gene Okerlund is standing by with the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash. Gene asks Nash about his title defense later tonight against Sting and Nash says that the title is staying exactly where it is; around his sexy waist. Gene tries to ask Nash about Raven and his possible involvement in the main event tonight, but Nash tells Gene that the only thing that matters to him tonight is beating Sting. Once that is done, he'll deal with Raven if need be. (B)

e0KbmYls.jpgvs.xeqPtl1s.jpg

Dustin Rhodes is in action next as he takes on "The Dog-faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner. Rick attacks Dustin as soon as he enters the ring, giving himself the early advantage. There is nothing too pretty about Rick's offense here, but it is nonetheless very effective as he begins to wear Dustin down. Much like his brother in the previous match, Rick earns himself a few warnings from the referee for failing to adhere to the rules as closely as he should, but thanks to his experience the veteran is able to stay on the right side of disqualification territory, if only barely. Dustin is able to fight his way back into this one after Rick misses a corner clothesline, and Dustin hits a few running clotheslines of his own. Rick tries to regain control of the match, but is caught off guard by a surprise roll-up from Dustin, which is just barely enough for the three count and the big victory for Dustin Rhodes here at Greed.

Dustin Rhodes defeated Rick Steiner at 7:45 by pinfall with a roll-up (C+)

sSiM1MWs.jpgGc4aCsxs.jpgdNLwm1Ls.jpg

Following the match we immediately cut backstage to where Eric Bischoff is with Mike Awesome and Stacy Keibler, and Bischoff is not a happy man after Awesome attacked Konnan earlier tonight, causing Konnan to miss the Big Risk ladder match. Mike Awesome seems entirely unapologetic, but Stacy does try to play the peacemaker here as she apologizes on her client's behalf, but Bischoff is not having it, warning Stacy that they really don't want to get on his bad side. Bischoff continues by saying that since Mike Awesome is so eager for a fight he'll get one...tomorrow night on Nitro against BG James in a no holds barred match! Looks like we've got ourselves quite a match set for Nitro! (B-)

7PSSM69s.jpg

We cut to somewhere in the rafters where Sting is standing, holding his trademark black bat. Sting says that the road to Greed has been long and winding, and that it almost seems like it has been a year rather than a couple of weeks, but tonight the waiting is finally over because tonight he will go one on one with "Big Sexy" for the WCW World Championship. Sting says that he'll be ready for anything Nash, Raven or anybody else throws his way, but they better be ready too because The Stinger has a few tricks of his own. Sting says that tonight...it's SHOWTIME!!! (B+)

Big Risk Ladder Match - Winner Gets A World Title Shot At Clash of The Champions

wNECq63s.jpgvs.t5bgsE2s.jpgvs.qnDHH19s.jpgvs.IJIxeY2s.jpgvs.waG19mms.jpg

The stakes couldn't be higher in this one as whoever climbs the ladder and retrieves the briefcase hanging above the ring will earn themselves a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Clash of the Champions. Despite the friendship between Rey Misterio Jr. and BG James, there are no allies in this one as it is every man for himself. This is obviously a wild match with the action taking place both in and around the ring, and with bodies flying everywhere. Tony Schiavone suggests that the winner of this one might be the person who is willing to take the biggest risk, obviously playing off of the name of the match, while Bobby Heenan thinks the winner will be the smartest person in the match. Mike Tenay wonders if one automatically excludes the other, to which Heenan replies yes because brains and brawn doesn't exactly go hand in hand, which doesn't necessarily make a whole lot of sense. All five men have their moments of dominance in this one, and all five men come close to claiming the briefcase on at least one occasion, but each time they are thwarted by one of the other competitors cutting them off. A particular high spot comes when Rey Misterio Jr. takes a fall off the ladder and through a table that had been set up outside the ring by Chris Kanyon a few minutes earlier. That's all we see of Rey for a while as the remaining four men continue to battle it out. We end up with Storm and Kanyon fighting at the top of the ladder, trading punches as both men refuse to go down. Finally, after a brutal headbutt by Kanyon, Lance Storm drops to the mat and Kanyon looks to have the match won. But somehow, some way, Rey Misterio Jr. is back in the ring and climbing the ladder, while Kanyon, who was stunned himself by the headbutt, is trying to regain his bearings at the top of the ladder. Rey meets Kanyon at the top of the ladder, grabs Kanyon's head and smashes it into the ladder once...twice...three times! Kanyon is teetering and a when Rey drives Kanyon's head into the ladder for a fourth time, Kanyon finally falls off the ladder and Rey is able to claim the briefcase and win the match.

Rey Misterio Jr. defeated Chris Kanyon, Lance Storm, "The Cat" and BG James at 17:57 when Rey claimed the briefcase. Rey Misterio Jr. earns a World Title shot at Clash of the Champions (B-)

After the match, Rey Misterio Jr. poses at he top of the ladder with the briefcase containing the contract for the World Title match, celebrating his huge victory here tonight at Greed.

zah6nFes.jpgsSiM1MWs.jpg

We cut backstage to Eric Bischoff's office where Ric Flair barges in demanding to face Diamond Dallas Page tomorrow night on Nitro. Bischoff tells Flair that that's not going to happen simply because Bischoff is disinclined to just give Flair anything on principle alone, but says that if Flair can win his match tomorrow night, against a to-be-determined opponent, then Bischoff will book him against DDP at Clash of the Champions for the US Title. Flair seems content with this, saying that Bischoff might as well book the match for the Clash right now because he'll beat whoever he has to to get Page in the ring one more time. (B+)

pbZkaFms.jpgvs.TqDQ0Kzs.jpgw/YJdjdt3s.jpg

Ever since returning to WCW, Juventud Guerrera has had his eye on Torrie Wilson, not caring whatsoever that Torrie doesn't return his interest at all. Finally, after weeks of what basically amounts to stalking, Kidman gets Juventud in the ring tonight and it's a rough night for Juvi. Kidman completely dominates this one, punishing Juvi for his actions and even inviting Torrie into the ring to get some payback of her own, first slapping Juvi and then hitting a low blow, which the referee allows due to Juvi's past actions. Kidman then hits the Kid Krusher, the Shooting Star Press, and this one is over and done as Kidman and Torrie get their revenge on Juvi.

Billy Kidman defeated Juventud Guerrera at 3:50 by pinfall with a Shooting Star Press ©

As Kidman and Torrie celebrate their victory in the ring, we cut to the announce table where Tony informs us that our main event of the evening, the World Title bout between Kevin Nash and Sting, is coming up next. The announcers briefly talk about the match and how we got here, with Nash winning the title from Sting at SuperBrawl thanks to Raven's interference, and they wonder what kind of impact Raven might have on tonight's main event? (B+)

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

YiAV5xvs.jpgvs.7PSSM69s.jpg

The big fight feel is undeniable here as two of the biggest stars in the history of the business square off with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Sting gets off to a hot start to grab the early advantage, but Nash takes control of the match with a big sidewalk slam. Nash then whips Sting into the corner and goes to work with his elbow and knee strikes, carefully framing that last big elbow before he chokes Sting in the corner by putting his big boot against Sting's throat. Nash then hits the snake eyes and a scoop slam, but misses a big elbow drop as Sting rolls out of the way. Sting fires back up with a series of punches and kicks that drives Nash back into the corner. Sting hits a trio of Stinger Splashes in the corner, but misses the fourth as Nash moves out of the ring. Double clothesline, and then both men are down in the middle of the ring.

FrQBvDLs.jpgtnI8bWQs.jpg5crDQaKs.jpgRBBYBSms.jpg

It seemd to be only a matter of time, and sure enough here comes Raven's Flock out from the back, lead by the man himself. They surround the ring and the referee isn't quite sure what to do, eventually turning to Raven to try to get them to leave. While the referee is busy with Raven, Crowbar and Abyss enter the ring but Sting is ready for them, striking first against Crowbar and sending him flying out of the ring, but Sting then gets taken down by the monster Abyss, who plants Sting with a huge chokeslam. Abyss leaves the ring and Nash gets back to his feet. Seeing Raven's Flock at ringside and realizing what probably just happened, Nash still pulls Sting to his feet, hits the Jackknife Powerbomb, and pins Sting to retain the Championship here as Raven once again played a deciding factor in a World Title match.

Kevin Nash defeated Sting at 12:28 by pinfall with a Jackknife Powerbomb following interference from Raven's Flock. Nash retains the WCW World Heavyweight Championship (B-)

Having cost Sting the World Championship once again, Raven and his Flock leave the ringside area and Kevin Nash stands tall in the ring with the World Championship as WCW Greed comes to an end.

News and Notes - Post Greed Edition

A few interesting tidbits following Greed:

Konnan flat out refused to work the Big Risk ladder match at Greed, citing the fear of suffering a potentially serious injury as the reason why. This caught WCW management off guard and forced them to make changes to the planned booking, with Konnan getting taken out before the match by Mike Awesome.

The Billy Kidman vs. Juventud Guerrera match was initially planned to go longer and be far more competitive, but the decision was made over the past few weeks to release Juventud following Greed due to increasing concerns over his backstage antics. Simply put, WCW management decided that keeping Juvi around was more trouble than he was worth and made the decision to cut him, and their losses, following the Greed PPV.

In some surprising news, "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown is expected to be released from his WCW contract shortly. Brown has made a couple of appearances in WCW, picking up wins in dominating fashion, but rumor is that management has simply soured on his push recently and word has it that they aren't looking to keep him around much longer.

Vampiro won't be seen on WCW television for a little while as he was given some time off following Greed. With no concrete plans in place for him at the moment, the decision was made to get him out of the locker room for a while as morale was creeping uncomfortably close to the problem area, and Vampiro has earned a reputation of being somewhat problematic backstage.

Alright, WCW Greed is in the books, hope everyone enjoyed it. Clash of the Champions is just two weeks away, and I have decided that the scores for this show will carry over into the next PPV. However, that doesn't mean that the winner of the Greed prediction contest will go without a prize, which means that The Lloyd can expect to receive his prize in the near future.

Big thank you to everyone who predicted and/or read the show. It's really great to be back at it and it is in no small part thanks to the interest you guys have shown in it.

Woohoo!! I love a prize!! :D

Loved the show too man. I think Raven is excellently booked here, as I've said to you in the past.

Konnan not working the ladder match could have been a problem for you, but you solved it by having Awesome take him out, and now you have a ready made feud... Plus Rey won the Big Risk Match, but he never beat Konnan to do it... It's feud city, population Konnan!!

Shocked about Monty. You seemed to be pushing him hard, and that surprised me. Now letting him go is even more surprising.

Week 3, March, 2002

Live from the Valley Ice Garden in Bozeman, Montana

Attendance: 3.500 (sellout)

We are less than 24 hours removed from the controversial ending to Greed and Monday Nitro kicks off in a big way with the WCW World Champion, "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, coming down to the ring for a promo. Nash says that he slept terribly last night and that these next two weeks until the Clash are going to be unbearable for him, like hell on earth, because he's sure as hell gonna be losing a lot of sleep over the seemingly insurmountable challenge that awaits him at Clash. Nash is obviously being disingenuous as he says this, and he goes on to claim that, given that huge challenge that stands in front of him, the only thing he can do is prepare as best he can by facing people who are like Rey Misterio Jr. So, in tonight's main event, Nash announces that that is exactly what he's going to do. Nash then drops the mic and leaves the ring, leaving the announcers, and everyone else, to wonder just who Nash will be facing in tonight's main event. (A*)

cWhj8wTs.jpgvs.jzR3NbBs.jpgw/xwUJi96s.jpg

Victories have been few and far between for Alex Wright since WCW's return from hiatus and tonight proves to be no different. Despite putting up a decent fight, some well-timed interference by Big Smooth spells doom for Alex Wright as Cash is able to capitalize on his bodyguard's interference, hitting the Dead Level to pick up the win here on Nitro.

Cash defeated Alex Wright at 5:37 by pinfall with a Dead Level following interference by Big Smooth (D+)

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with BG James and Gene asks BG about his no holds barred match against Mike Awesome later tonight. BG calls out Awesome for what he did to Konnan last night, noting that Konnan is still in the hospital. BG says that he's not the kind of man who is about to just let something like that slide, so tonight Mike Awesome is gonna find out the hard way just what happens when you mess with a man's friends. BG says that he's not only fighting for himself tonight, he's fighting for Konnan as well and Mike Awesome is in for a world of hurt tonight. As James walks off, Gene sends us back to ringside for more in-ring action. (D+)

"The Cat" is not in a great mood tonight after he failed to win the Big Risk ladder match last night at Greed, and he takes his frustrations out on poor Jason Jett here tonight. This match is completely one-sided, and the only reason it goes for as long as it does is because "The Cat", despite his bad mood, still finds time to mock the fans. "The Cat" finally puts Jett away with a Feliner for a dominant victory.

"The Cat" defeated Jason Jett at 2:34 by pinfall with a Feliner (D+)

In the back, "Sugar" Shane Helms is looking for Chavo Guerrero Jr., calling Chavo a thief and daring him to show his face. When he finally does find Chavo, the man who is currently is possession of the Cruiserweight Championship title belt is protected by KroniK, who apparently were hired on for another night. With Adams and Clark between him and Helms, Chavo taunts Helms with the Cruiserweight Championship that he stole last night at Greed, saying that the title is finally back home where it belongs and Shane is never getting his hands on it again. Shane lunges for Chavo, but is stopped and beaten down by KroniK as Chavo runs off, still in possession of the stolen Cruiserweight Championship. ©

No Holds Barred Match

Gc4aCsxs.jpgw/dNLwm1Ls.jpgvs.wNECq63s.jpg

As you might expect there is no collar and elbow tie-up at the beginning of this one as both men kick things off by trading punches in the middle of the ring. This sets the tone for the entire match, which is really a fight more than a wrestling match. The actions quickly spills out of the ring where both men use the environment to punish each other. Mike Awesome gains the upper hand, throwing James into the guard rail repeatedly and blasting him with a steel chair to the back. James fights back with some chair shots of his own and then he slams Awesome head-first into the guard rail. James goes for the pin, but Awesome kicks out after two. BG James does his trademark shaky knee drop and goes for a piledriver, but Awesome counters it with a back drop. Awesome catches a charging BG James with a powerslam, and then he puts him away with an Awesome Bomb as the announcers put over the fact that, while they don't condone Awesome's actions last night, they can't deny that the man is on a roll right now, having defeated both Rey Misterio Jr. and now BG James in recent weeks.

Mike Awesome defeated BG James at 9:50 by pinfall with an Awesome Bomb (C+)

Following the match we cut backstage to where "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair is seen getting ready for his match later tonight. Tony, Mike and Bobby talk about the fact that Flair must win his match tonight if he wants to face Diamond Dallas Page for the United States Championship at Clash of the Champions, but the question still remains; who will Flair's opponent be? (B-)

SsRMf35s.jpgtjPJopWs.jpg

The WCW Tag Team Champions, Totally Buff, come down to the ring for a promo. Buff talks first by saying that they know that Clash of the Champions is just two weeks away and that they'll have to defend their Tag Team Titles at the show. Buff adds that, since they are the greatest tag team in all of history, they have no worries about who they are facing--in fact, to show just how little they care, they are issuing an open challenge to any team in the back that has the guts to face them, first come first serve. Luger then gets on the mic and adds a warning that whatever team that do accept their challenge, they will have to face Totally Buff in the ring and they need to think long and hard about whether that's a risk they are really willing to take. As Luger and Bagwell leave the ring and head to the back, the announcers wonder who will step up to challenge Totally Buff at the Clash. (A)

FrQBvDLs.jpgtnI8bWQs.jpg5crDQaKs.jpgRBBYBSms.jpg

Raven and his Flock are gathered somewhere in the backstage area, and Raven brags to the camera about the impact he's made on WCW since his return, saying that the WCW World Heavyweight Championship is won and lost by the grace of his whim. Raven says that he has taken the World Championship away from Sting, but that's just the beginning. Raven then challenges Sting to a match at Clash of the Champions--not against himself, but against his monster, Abyss! Raven says that if Sting wants him, then come and get him...but he'll have to go through his monster first. "Quote the Raven...nevermore!" (B-)

zah6nFes.jpgvs.lPwVnNos.jpg

Ric Flair's opponent tonight is revealed to be Bam Bam Bigelow, who Flair must defeat if he wants to face DDP at Clash of the Champions. The match goes back and forth for a while, with both men taking turns having the advantage, until...

hH12gGzs.jpg

The United States Champion makes his way down to the ring. Tony guesses that Page is here to prevent Flair from winning because DDP made it clear last night at Greed when he walked out of the US Title match that he wants nothing to do with Ric Flair, and he certainly doesn't want to face him again at the Clash. Tony turns out to be right as DDP does involve himself in the match, attempting to attack Flair when the referee is accidentally knocked down, but Flair ducks and Page ends up hitting Bigelow instead. Flair then rolls Bigelow up and gets the one-two-three. Flair is going to Clash of the Champions to challenge for the United States Championship one more time!

Ric Flair defeated Bam Bam Bigelow at 7:43 by pinfall with a roll-up (C+)

As Flair celebrates in the ring, DDP reteats back up the ramp, looking none too pleased with the outcome of the match as the announcers hype up the fact that Page will now have to stand and face Flair at the Clash.

Uf8Cnwks.jpgO6ChwMws.jpg

We cut to a pre-taped sit-down interview with Booker T, conducted by Mike Tenay. Tenay asks Booker about his win at Greed against Scott Steiner, and Booker talks about finally putting his issues with Scott Steiner behind him last night, saying that it has been months and years in the making but he finally put it to rest last night. Tenay asks Booker about his plans for the future now, and Booker makes no secret of the fact that his eyes are on the WCW World Title. Booker says that he feels like he's at the top of his game and he wants the title that he never lost back. (B-)

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgwZXuh2Cs.jpgwsZRuyws.jpg

Following the interview with Booker T, we cut to the back where "Mean" Gene is joined by The Mamalukes, Big Vito and Johnny The Bull, who, according to Gene, have an announcement to make. Big Vito says that they heard what Luger and Bagwell said earlier, and he and The Bull are accepting the challenge for a match at Clash of the Champions. Vito tells Luger and Bagwell that they better get ready, because they'll be seeing them at Clash of the Champions. The Mamalukes walk off as Gene notes that Big Vito and Johnny The Bull just accepted the open challenge and will be facing Totally Buff at Clash of the Champions. (D+)

sSiM1MWs.jpg9umPviHs.jpg

Elsewhere in the back, "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett is walking with Eric Bischoff, and Jarrett is bragging about defeating Sean O'Haire last night, making damn sure that he and Palumbo won't get another shot at the Tag Team Championships. They come across a random backstage worker who accidentally bumps into Bischoff, causing the boss to spill his coffee. Both Bischoff and Jarrett start berating the man and verbally abusing him until...

O9mmnFas.jpg

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan shows up. Duggan tries to play peacemaker by saying that it was just an accident and accidents happen, but this doesn't sit well with Bischoff and Jarrett, who start verbally scolding "Hacksaw" instead. Jeff Jarrett tells "Hacksaw" that he just made the biggest mistake of his life, and Jarrett then tells Duggan to show up at Clash of the Champions, because he's got a match against "The Chosen One" and Jarrett vows to retire Duggan the same way he retired Randy Savage because that's what Jarrett does! Bischoff confirms the match on the spot, saying it's a done deal. Jarrett and Bischoff then walk off as, apparently, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's career will be on the line at Clash of the Champions! (B+)

IJIxeY2s.jpgvs.s1tPIbOs.jpg

Time for some more in-ring action as Lance Storm goes one on one with the Sandman. Storm also came up short in the Big Risk ladder match last night and much like "The Cat" earlier, Storm is looking to bounce back with a win tonight. Sandman isn't about to go down without a fight, however, and this turns out to be a good match, albeit one with a contrast in styles as Storm's technical wrestling is offset by Sandman's brawling. In the end, it's Storm who picks up the win, hitting a Superkick and covering Sandman for a pinfall victory.

Lance Storm defeated Sandman at 6:48 by pinfall with a Superkick (B-)

IJIxeY2s.jpg

Lance Storm gets on the mic after the match and cuts a promo saying that he's sick and tired of seeing oldtimers like Ric Flair get title shot after title shot while guys like him get nothing. Storm says that if anyone deserves a shot at the United States Championship, it's him...and not that fossil Ric Flair.

xeqPtl1s.jpg

Dustin Rhodes's music then hits, bringing Rhodes out from the back to stand at the top of the entrance ramp. Rhodes says that while he doesn't appreciate the disrespect Lance Storm is showing to guys like Ric Flair, Dustin understands where he's coming from. Dustin says that he wants a shot at the US Title just as much as Storm does, but unlike Storm...he actually won his match last night at Greed.

sSiM1MWs.jpg

This finally brings Eric Bischoff out from the back, and Bischoff says that if Storm and Rhodes really want a shot...they can earn it at Clash of the Champions in a number one contender's match! Both men seem content with this decision, and the announcers hype up the fact that Clash of the Champions is already shaping up to be quite the event. (C+)

7PSSM69s.jpg

Once the ring has cleared out, "Seek and Destroy" starts playing as Sting comes down to the ring for a promo. Sting says that despite his best efforts, Raven managed to screw him over last night. Sting says that he knew something was coming, but sometimes you can't stop it even when you know it's coming. That's life. Sting says that as far as Raven's challenge is concerned, if Raven doesn't have the guts to face him himself, then he'll gladly face Abyss at Clash of the Champions. But Sting says that if he beats Abyss, then Raven will have to step into the ring with the Stinger!

FrQBvDLs.jpgtnI8bWQs.jpg5crDQaKs.jpgRBBYBSms.jpg

Sting is then interrupted as the big screen flickers to life and it is Raven and his Flock who appear on the screen. Raven says that he accepts Sting's terms for Clash of the Champions, and then he tells Sting that he has another challenge for him for next week. Raven says that Crowbar just won't shut up about facing Sting, so Raven challenges Sting, on Crowbar's behalf, to a match next week on Nitro. Sting says that he owes all of them a beating, and he'll happily start with Crowbar next week on Nitro! (B+)

Z1DlA0Ns.jpghH12gGzs.jpg

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with Diamond Dallas Page, who inadvertently helped Ric Flair earn another crack at the US Title earlier tonight. Gene asks DDP about it, and Page says that as much as he would really rather be done with Ric Flair, if he has to beat him down again at Clash of the Champions, then so be it. Gene tries to point out that Page seems to have some of the history wrong, but Page says that Flair is just as bad as the young punks who disrespect him--in fact, Flair's is worse because, as a veteran, Flair should know better. Page says that he'll make Flair pay for his ignorance at Clash of the Champions. (B-)

YwfbEFBs.jpgvs.9VqkZFJs.jpg

It's main event time and apparently Kevin Nash's opponent tonight is young AJ Styles. Nash pretends to be scared of AJ early on in this one, causing both Tony and Mike to scoff at the Champion's behavior, with Mike Tenay pointing out that AJ Styles is one of the most talented young up-and-comers in the business today. Unfortunately, talented as he is, AJ is not yet on the level of "Big Sexy", who gets away with his arrogance in this one, toying with AJ until he finally puts him away with the Jackknife Powerbomb. Nash then places a boot on AJ's chest as the referee counts the one-two-three.

Kevin Nash defeated AJ Styles at 3:04 by pinfall with a Jackknife Powerbomb (C-)

qnDHH19s.jpg

The match is over and Kevin Nash has won in dominating fashion, but out from the back comes Rey Misterio Jr. Rey hits the ring and ducks a big boot attempt by Nash, then turns and starts chopping Nash down to size by kicking his leg. Rey gets Nash down to one knee, then bounces off the ropes and hits a low dropkick right in Nash's face. Rey then quickly leaves the ring and makes his way back up the ramp as a visibly furious Kevin Nash gets back to his feet in the ring. Nash motions for Rey to get back in the ring, but Rey, in turn, motions that the World Championship will soon be around his waist. Nitro comes to an end with Rey Misterio Jr. getting one up on "Big Sexy" here tonight. (B+)

Week 4, March, 2002

Live from the Curtis Menard Sports Center in Wasilla, Alaska

Attendance: 4.374

The last Monday Nitro before Clash of the Champions kicks off with six man tag team action as Chavo Guerrero Jr. and KroniK take on the team of the Cruiserweight Champion "Sugar" Shane Helms, Lash Leroux and Alex Wright. Chavo, who is still in possession of the Cruiserweight Championship title belt, spends the majority of this match on the apron, allowing Adams and Clark to do the work Chavo is paying them to do. It is a decent match that ends when KroniK hits their High Times double chokeslam finisher on Lash Leroux, and then Chavo tags in, hits the Gory Bomb and pins Lash for the victory.

Chavo Guerrero Jr. and KroniK defeated Shane Helms, Lash Leroux and Alex Wright at 6:48 pinfall when Chavo pinned Leroux following a Gory Bomb (C-)

"Sugar" Shane Helms hits the ring after the match to go after Chavo, who managed to avoid locking up with Shane during the match, but KroniK once again gets between Shane and Chavo and it appears that Chavo will head into the Clash with the Cruiserweight title despite Shane being the actual champion.

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgqnDHH19s.jpg

Following the opening match we cut backstage where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is with Rey Misterio Jr. and Gene asks Rey about his confrontation with Kevin Nash last week on Nitro, and his World Title match coming up at Clash of the Champions. Rey says that Nash doesn't learn from his past mistakes because he's taken him lightly once before and look what happened. Rey says that he truly believes history can repeat itself at Clash of the Champions and that he will walk out as the new World Champion, which would be a life-long dream come true for him. As Rey walks off, Gene announces to the camera that Rey will be in action in our main event later tonight against "The Franchise" Shane Douglas. ©

IJIxeY2s.jpgxeqPtl1s.jpg

Back at ringside, Lance Storm's music hits and Storm comes down to the ring to cut a promo. The promo starts off quite similar to what he said last week about deserving a shot at the United States Championship, but Storm is almost immediately cut off by Dustin Rhodes, who makes his way to the ring as his music plays. The two go back and forth about becoming the number one contender to the US Title until....

TqDQ0Kzs.jpgYJdjdt3s.jpg

Billy Kidman's music suddenly hits and Kidman and Torrie Wilson make their way out from the back and down to the ring. Kidman gets on a mic of his own as says that he, too, feels he deserves a US Title shot and he is more than willing to prove himself. Things are getting heated in a hurry here between these three men, but then...

t5bgsE2s.jpgGQpaxEcs.jpg

"The Cat" Ernest Miller's music hits and "The Cat" is out from the back with Miss Jones. "Wait just a damn minute" he says as he and Miss Jones make their way to the ring. Once there, "The Cat" says that if anybody deserves an opportunity--it's him, so everybody else will just have to get in line and that line starts BEHIND "The Cat".

sSiM1MWs.jpg

Finally, Eric Bischoff's music hits and the boss finally arrives on the scene. Bischoff says that he's heard enough and announces that the match between Lance Storm and Dustin Rhodes at Clash of the Champions for a shot at the US Title will now instead a four way match involving the four men in the ring right now. Dustin, Kidman and "The Cat" all seem pleased with this, while Lance Storm seems unhappy about the fact that he now has to face three men at the Clash instead of just Rhodes. (C+)

We swing by the announce table where Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Bobby Heenan are calling the action. They hype up the fact that Sting will be in action later tonight Crowbar, and they wonder what kind of impact Raven is going to have on this match. They also talk about the fact that Sting will face "The Monster" Abyss at Clash of the Champions, and then we head back to the ring for our second match of the night. ©

9KBcilDs.jpgDQd8EOss.jpgvs.wZXuh2Cs.jpgwsZRuyws.jpg

The Mamalukes are in action next as they take on the Jung Dragons in tag team action. The match only just barely get under way before...

SsRMf35s.jpgtjPJopWs.jpg

Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell make their way down to ringside. It is an uphill battle for the Mamalukes here as the threat of Luger and Bagwell at ringside means that they constantly have to watch their backs, which causes them to lose the upper hand in the match more than once. In the end, after a competitive match, the Mamalukes are able to win this uphill battle as Johnny The Bull hits a Fuh-Get-A-Bout-It on Kaz Hayashi to secure the pinfall victory.

The Mamalukes defeated The Jung Dragons at 9:31 by pinfall when The Bull pinned Kaz following a Fuh-Get-A-Bout-It (C-)

The match is over and, surprisingly, Totally Buff didn't involve themselves directly in the match, although their presence at ringside was a distraction for the Mamalukes. Big Vito and Johnny The Bull are are challenging Totally Buff to get into the ring for a fight right here, right now, but the Tag Team Champions choose not to as they walk off with cocky smiles on their faces, saying to the camera that they're going to fight on their own terms and nobody elses. (C+)

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgYwfbEFBs.jpg

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Gene asks Nash about Rey Misterio and Nash, despite Rey getting the better of him last week, plays it off cool here and says that even a broken clock is right twice a day, and even someone like Rey can get the better of someone like him....about once in a life time, so he's not too worried about it happening again. Gene brings up the fact that Rey has beaten Nash once before, but Nash just says that that only proves his point even more because Rey has done a once-in-a-lifetime thing twice now already, so it ain't happening again at the Clash. (C+)

O6ChwMws.jpgvs.jzR3NbBs.jpgw/xwUJi96s.jpg

Booker T is in action next against Cash, and thanks to some well-timed interfernece from Cash's bodyguard, Big Smooth, this match is actually somewhat competitive as Smooth's interference allows Cash to get a decent amount of offense in. Still, while Cash is a talented young up-and-comer, he's just not in Booker T's league yet and Booker picks up a decisive victory after hitting the Bookend.

Booker T defeated Cash at 4:55 by pinfall with a Bookend (B-)

wNECq63s.jpg

BG James comes down to the ring for a promo, saying that Mike Awesome may have won the battle last week but the war is far from over. Tony and Mike both put BG James over here, saying that he is showing a lot of courage here after the beating he took last week at the hands of Mike Awesome in that No Holds Barred match. James says that he is still standing and he is not done with Mike Awesome, not by a long shot.

Gc4aCsxs.jpgwaG19mms.jpgdNLwm1Ls.jpg

Mike Awesome then comes out from the back, along with Chris Kanyon and Stacy Keibler, to stand at the top of the entrance ramp. Stacy gets on the mic and tells BG that while some women might be impressed by his "courage", all she really sees is stupidity. Awesome and Kanyon then charge the ring and even though BG James tries to fight them off, it's two on one and they get the better of him and are beating him down when...

v4ps6Igs.jpg

Konnan suddenly hits the ring to even the odds, and he and BG James clear the ring and stand tall. As Awesome and Kanyon make their way back up the ramp, Konnan gets on the mic and challenges them to a tag team match at Clash of the Champions. Stacy accepts the challenge on behalf of her clients, and we've got another match set for the Clash this Sunday! (C-)

FrQBvDLs.jpg

We cut to somewhere in the back where Raven is sitting by himself. Raven cuts a promo on Sting, saying that Sting reminds him of every single rich, good-looking high school punk he ever had to deal with back then, who has had everything handed to them on a silver platter and yet still they think that somehow they have earned it. They think that they are better. Raven says that Sting is WCW's golden boy, always has been, and he has gotten special treatment because of it. Raven says that it's time for Sting to get a taste of what life is like for those who doesn't get everything handed to them, and when he does...then the "hero" will reveal himself to be nothing more than a fraud...."Quote the Raven...nevermore!" (B)

7PSSM69s.jpgvs.5crDQaKs.jpgw/RBBYBSms.jpg

Following Raven's promo we proceed to the match between Sting and Crowbar. This is a decent, rather short match that sees Sting in control for most of it, but Daffney's presence at ringside does prove helpful for Crowbar. Still, Sting puts Crowbar away with a Scorpion Deathdrop for a decisive victory here on Nitro.

Sting defeated Crowbar at 3:33 by pinfall with a Scorpion Deathdrop (C-)

FrQBvDLs.jpgtnI8bWQs.jpg

Sting may have defeated Crowbar here tonight, but his problems with Raven and his Flock are far from over. After the match, Raven and Abyss appear at the top of the stage to stare Sting down as the announcers hype up the fact that Sting will face "The Monster" Abyss one on one at Clash of the Champions this Sunday night. (B-)

Z1DlA0Ns.jpgNBNbcUSs.jpg

We cut to the back where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is with "The Franchise" Shane Douglas. Gene asks Douglas about his match tonight, and Douglas says that after he beats Rey Misterio tonight, it's only logical that he should take Rey's place in the World Title match at Clash of the Champions. Shane says that tonight he takes his first steps on the path to becoming the WCW World Champion, and he doesn't mind at all having to step all over Rey to get there. (D+)

hH12gGzs.jpgvs.v70H8HKs.jpg

The WCW United States Champion is in action next in a non-title match as Diamond Dallas Page faces off against Hugh Morrus. This is a good match, but about halfway through...

zah6nFes.jpg

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair makes his way down to ringside. This clearly annoys DDP, who spends more time yelling at Flair than he does paying attention to his opponent. Hugh Morrus then rolls DDP up from behind, and only a kickout at the very last split second prevents Morrus from picking up the win. Page then refocuses and eventually hits the Diamond Cutter to earn a hard-fought victory here tonight.

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Hugh Morrus at 7:39 by pinfall with a Diamond Cutter (B-)

DDP has managed to pick up the win despite Ric Flair's distraction, but Flair isn't done yet as "The Nature Boy" hits the ring looking to confront DDP. Page, however, bails out of the ring and makes his way back up the ramp, avoiding Flair yet again. But, as Tony Schiavone points out, DDP will have to stand and face Ric Flair at Clash of the Champions. (B-)

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's music hits and Duggan comes down to the ring, carrying both a two-by-four and an American flag. Once in the ring, Duggan puts the two-by-four and the flag in the corner, leaned against the turnbuckles, and then he gets on the mic for a promo. "Hacksaw" gets fired up as he talks about how his career means so little to Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff that they are going to make him put it on the line for displaying basic human decency. Duggan says that his career may mean so little to them, but it means A LOT more to him and he'll fight with everything he's got left at Clash of the Champions!

"The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett's music then cuts "Hacksaw" off and Jarrett makes his way out from the back and down to the ring. Jarrett tells "Hacksaw" that he should be grateful because at least his career will end at the hands of the greatest wrestler in the world today, and the one with all the stroke around here. But Jarrett says that he doesn't expect Duggan to get that. He expects Duggan to every bit as dumb as the fans who are booing Jarrett, which naturally makes them boo Jarrett even louder. Jarrett then tries to cheap shot Duggan, but Duggan gets the better of Jarrett, knocking him down. Duggan then lines up in his patented three-point stance and....hits a clothesline on Jarrett! "Hacksaw" stands tall in the ring, but what will happen this Sunday night at Clash of the Champions when his career will be on the line? (B-)

It is almost main event time as we cut to the back where Rey Misterio Jr. is walking toward the entrance area when he is stopped by Booker T. Booker wishes Rey good luck in his match tonight, and warns him about facing Nash at the Clash, reminding Rey to never trust Nash because Nash will do anything to keep the title. Rey thanks Booker for the words and walks off as we cut back to ringside. (B-)

Rey Misterio Jr. faces off against "The Franchise" Shane Douglas in our main event tonight, and while this is a good match, the announcers mostly talk about Rey challenging Kevin Nash for the World Title this Sunday night at Clash of the Champions. Bringing the focus back to the match at hand, "The Professor" Mike Tenay notes that Rey has to be careful not to overlook the challenge of Shane Douglas by thinking too much about Nash, because Douglas is a tough opponent in his own right. This is true, and the match goes back and forth until...

Kevin Nash hits the ring and hits a big boot on Rey, causing the match to end in disqualification.

Rey Misterio Jr. defeated Shane Douglas at 7:56 by disqualification when Kevin Nash got involved (B-)

The bell sounds and the match is over, but Kevin Nash isn't done just yet. Nash pulls Rey to his feet and hits a Jackknife Powerbomb, and it's the World Champion who stands tall at the end of Nitro tonight. (B+)

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

"Big Sexy" Kevin Nash © vs. Rey Misterio Jr.

Comment: Unfortunately, it's still where the Big Boys play. If Rey's going to get a World Title, I would imagine it'd on a bigger, if not the biggest stage.

WCW United States Championship

Diamond Dallas Page © vs. "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair

Comment: Flair is old hat or sour grapes or just not all there. I know DDP is also on a decline, but at least DDP can still go. He's got this.

Sting vs. "The Monster" Abyss

Comment: Big win for Abyss here with The Flock's help or other various shecannery.

WCW Tag Team Championships

Totally Buff © vs. The Mamalukes

Comment: Gotta have new champions somewhere right? No? We don't? Well I think The Mamalukes could get the win here. If anything by DQ or count out.

If Jim Duggan loses, he must retire

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett

Comment: Duggan is being chosen to be put out to pasture in a way a lot more classy than what I did to him.

WCW Cruiserweight Championship

"Sugar" Shane Helms © vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Comment: Chavo keeps that belt officially for now.

WCW United States Championship Number One Contender's Match

Lance Storm vs. Dustin Rhodes vs. "The Cat" vs. Billy Kidman

Comment: Big rub for Kidman in my eyes.

Konnan and BG James vs. Mike Awesome and Chris Kanyon

Comment: Are you not down with the 2 Live Kru?
