<p><strong>Reader Survey</strong></p><p> </p><p>

It's our hope that this diary will continue well into the future and so we plan to put forth a small survey just before we turn the page on a game year. We're about a week away from 1998 so we want to know how we can make this project a better experience. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Is there anything you really like?</p><p> </p><p>

Is there anything you really hate?</p><p> </p><p>

How could we make this better?</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Thanks for reading our stuff guys!</p>

<p><em>Been following this project, so I figured I'd drop some feedback.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Is there anything you really like? <strong>I really dig the website idea. It's something that I've never seen utilized before. Hope it isn't a pain to make! I also dig the Goldust/Luna/Marlena mash-up, as it's again something I'm not sure I've seen before.</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Is there anything you really hate? <strong>Hate is a strong word here. The thing I dislike the most is the roster pages. There's gotta be a better way to format them without having me go individually through everyone on the roster. Plus, it's a pain on mobile </strong><img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

How could we make this better? <strong>The writing's good, both shows have different feels, but I feel like some stuff (Like the B-show results and website captures, or the b-shows and the observer notes) could be combined into one post. It's nice to get an update every once in a few days, but I could live without reading the shotgun results, ya feel me?</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Overall, gents, I like where this is going! Keep up the good work!</em></p>

Wow! The event went pretty close to how I thought it would go with a couple of exceptions. Did you have to tank a few matches to get the winners you wanted? There were a couple of really low-rated matches considering who was involved, but I could see several needing the Keep Strong notes to avoid the locker room rating hitting 0. Probably a really poor show grade from what you were shooting for though (and what a Sting win over Hogan would have gotten you irl aka a 140 even though that's impossible to get).

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 120

Monday Week 1, January 1998 - The Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia - Attendance: 30,000

[Monday Nitro opens to an aerial shot of downtown Atlanta Georgia as the camera pans around to show the Georgia Dome. Over the aerial shot we hear Tony Schiavone, excitedly, say “24 hours removed from the night Sting fought for WCW and captured the World Heavyweight Championship…its our honor to welcome you to *WCW* Monday Nitro”.

We then go to some images from last night at Starrcade 97 including Larry beating Bischoff and Sting beating Hogan. The final video image of Sting celebrating is played before the Monday Nitro opening package airs.

The pyro goes off in the Georgia Dome and we are live for the first Monday Nitro of 1998! Tony, Mike & Larry welcome us, not to nWo Nitro, but to the program that has set the standard for professional wrestling, WCW Monday Nitro.

We are 24 hours removed from the most historic night in the history of our industry. Sting is the World Heavyweight Champion, Monday Nitro belongs to WCW, and WCW stood united against the nWo as the night closed at Starrcade.

We have been informed that here tonight in our main event, Bret Hart will make his Monday Nitro in ring debut when he takes on still WCW United States Champion, Curt Hennig of the nWo. We will also hear from The Nature Boy Ric Flair here tonight as well as the winner of the Career for Career match, Diamond Dallas Page.

But we kick things of in 1998 by going to the ring here on Monday Nitro. ]

============================

Match #1: The Hardys vs The Faces of Fear

The match starts out as a squash but it is clear that they don’t take the upstarts seriously and the Hardys almost score a victory when the Barbarian is hit by a top rope leg drop from Matt Hardy after tandem offense. That was a big mistake because Matt turns around and is locked into the Tongan Death Grip by Meng. Jeff jumps off the turnbuckle to break it up but Meng catches him too. Both men are brought down and eventually they give up.

Winners: The Faces of Fear

Grade: 62

[As the Faces of Fear leave the ring we hear Matt Hardy on the house mic. He gets their attention and says that they’re still standing (they’re struggling to get up but they are on their feet). The Faces of Fear turn around and run back into the ring and lay both men out and walk away. ]

[Nitro returns to images from the Career for Career match between Diamond Dallas Page & the Macho Man Randy Savage. We are told that the Macho Man immediately left Starrcade following his loss but that earlier this morning WCW received an email request from Savage to address Nitro one final time next week live from Jacksonville Florida. After much thought, WCW has agreed to look past the last year of Savage’s career and give the man the respect his career deserves and grant his request.

Next week LIVE on Nitro the Macho Man Randy Savage will be in the ring to give his farewell to professional wrestling.

[DDP’s music hits and the crowd comes alive as the winner of the Career for Career match walks down to the ring. He is clearly banged up from his physical encounter but says that there is nothing that would keep him from Hotlanta tonight.

DDP talks about how 9 years ago he had a dream, a dream that everyone mocked him for. Nobody believed him but him. And so he chased that dream and it has been a long and bumpy road to get to this point. But here he is and in seven weeks he will walk into the Cow Palace to face Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at SuperBrawl.

Page says that he has so many people to thank for getting him to this point but perhaps, and this is the odd one, no one deserves more of his gratitude than…Randy Savage. Yes, Macho took it too far. Yes, he made it personal. Yes, for the last year he has made DDP’s life a living hell. And yes, last night he damned near ended the dream but the fact is that all the adversity that he has given Page this year has made Page stronger, it has made him hungrier and it has made him ready for this moment.

Next week is the swan song of Macho Man Randy Savage and in seven weeks, Diamond Dallas Page will be crowned the new man of professional wrestling. But in seven days, DDP can make this promise…he will be in Jacksonville and he will thank Randy Savage like a man and offer him his hand. Lets see if Savage is man enough to shake it.

Match #2 WCW Cruiserweight Championship Match: Jushin "Thunder" Liger vs New WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr.

A high flying athletic contest early on but when Rey goes for a top rope drop kick and misses, he lands on his bad knee. The rest of the match he is unable to hit the springboard hurricarana and Jushin nearly scores a pinfall with a top rope senton. The finish comes when Jushin drops Rey with a German suplex and when he goes to pick up Rey to hit a piledriver, Rey is able to reverse it into a small package for the 3 count.

Winner and still WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Rey Mysterio Jr

As Rey is walking up the aisle he is blasted from behind by Guido. Guido throws Rey into the guardrail and slams his knee with a chair. Officials race down and pull the upstart competitor from the fallen champion.

[A video is shown of Raven skulking the streets of New York. He talks about the pain of the world and how it is etched into his very being. Last night at Starrcade, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko began to feel the pain that has plagued Raven for his entire life. It’s a lesson that they have begun to educate themselves through but it’s a lesson that’s not yet done. They haven’t felt Raven’s pain, not truly, not yet…but they will. We see Raven step on a rat as he says “Quote the Raven, Nevermore”

The video fades out with a “Nitro continues….” graphic. ]

Winner: Goldberg

[As Goldberg leaves the ring an overzealous fan of the nWo shoves a shirt in his face. Goldberg just looks at the fan, takes the shirt and spits on it and leaves it on the ring floor and walks away much to the cheering of the crowd in the Georgia Dome.]

[When Nitro returns we can hear the crowd screaming and chanting "welcome back" as Nitro fades in from black and we see Mean Gene Okerlund in the ring for the first time in over a month. Gene has a tear coming down his eye as he says he missed this and "Hotlanta it is my honor to introduce to you, the 14 time Heavyweight Champion of the World...The Nature Boy Ric Flair".

Flair comes out and he has a black eye and a bandage on his head from his war last night with Curt Hennig. He walks down to the aisle and bows to Gene before giving his old friend a hug. Both men get a big pop.

Ric says that seeing Mean Gene back on Nitro is about the only good bit of news today because the fact of the matter is, last night at Starrcade, The Nature Boy Ric Flair failed. He failed one-on-one and with no excuses. He failed against the man that butchered a friendship and ruined his soul. And maybe, just maybe, he failed because he does not have it anymore.

And Curt? The Nature Boy hates you and the Nature Boy will never forgive you, but Curt Hennig has the Nature Boy's respect because he won in the center of the ring. If the last 18 months have taught Flair anything, its that time is fleeting, age catches up to you and maybe its time for Ric Flair to wal....

The crowd is booing at the suggestion and Flair asks for the audience to let him speak. The audience comes alive at a disturbance as Shane Douglas,

the ECW World Champion jumps over the barricade.

Flair doesn't see him as Douglas slides in the ring and blasts him from behind. Douglas is on Flair immediately as the announcers freak out talking about how the ECW World Champion is on Nitro. Shane delivers a piledriver to Flair before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a biker chain. He wraps the chain around his fist and starts wailing away on Flair. Flair is soon a bloody mess as WCW officials race down to the ring along with numerous wrestlers.

Douglas leaves the way he came, through the crowd, as Flair is attended to and Nitro goes to an abrupt commercial. ]

Match #4: The Blue Bloods vs WCW World Tag Team Champions, The Steiner Brothers

This starts as a fast paced and evenly matched contest but it doesnt end that way as the Steiners really assert their dominance suplexing Taylor and Regal all over the ring. Soon, Regal is hit by a frankensteiner and a top rope bulldog and is pinned pretty decisively.

Winners: The Steiner Brothers

Grade: 61

[Following the match Booker T & Stevie Ray have come out and they are on the apron pointing at the champs. They can be heard screaming "those belts are ours" and "you stole the win". The Steiners gesture to come in the ring but Harlem Heat back off. Both teams pointing at each other and seeting with anger.]

Tickets are sold out so the only way to watch is on TNT or a Nitro party world wide. [Nitro returns to Bret Hart at the Nitro set with Mean Gene Okerlund. He says that last night at Starrcade, the Hitman achieved the first win on his quest to rid WCW of the Wolfpac degenerates that have poisoned professional wrestling. Last night in front of the world Scott Hall screamed for mercy and begged for leniency to the sharpshooter. So, who will it be next? Does Syxx want his scrawny little chicken legs snapped in two? How about Nash? Does Nash want to be chopped down to size? Well boys, strap in because once the Excellence of Execution beats Hennig tonight, one of you is next.]

Eddie Guerrero's music hits and he and Bret eye each other warily as he makes his way to the ring. Eddie looks miserable from the loss last night and he is definitely showing signs of wear and tear. He gets into the ring and the crowd comes alive as:

Luger makes his return to Monday Nitro. He gets a pretty big pop, all things consdiered, as he gets into the ring with Eddie.

Match #5: Lex Luger vs Eddie Guerrero

Early on Lex toys with Eddie and lets him get some shots in before Eddie almost scores a pinfall and then Lex stops playing around and hits Eddie with several big slams and a few stiff clotheslines but Eddie won't go down for the pinfall. Eddie gets control with a poke in the eye and actually hits the frog splash but when he covers Luger, the Total Package powers out quickly. Eddie is back peddling as Lex hits him with rights and lefts and several clotheslines and a poweslam. He calls for the Torture Rack and lifts Eddie up but as he does, Eddie's foot catches the ref who is momentairly blinded. When Eddie is lifted into the rack he is able slide down before Lex cinches it on, drops behind Lex and gives him a low blow. Lex doubles over, Eddie covers and with his foot on the ropes, the ref is able to see the pin and counts...1...2...3.

Winner: Eddie Guerrero

[Following the victory, Eddie high tails it out of the ring. Luger is incensed and stunned that Guerrero has defeated him on Nitro.]

Nitro returns to the announce booth where Tony, Mike & Bobby are sitting. Tony begins to promote that the main event of Bret Hart vs Curt Hennig non title is next and as he does so, Bobby just looks at him in utter disgust. Suddenly, Heenan just takes off his headset and gets up as Mike and Tony ask him what hes doing.

Bobby walks down the aisle and to the ring and walks over to David Penzer and yanks his microphone out of his hands. Bobby gets into the ring and paces for a few moments before looking into the crowd.

"So, Tony? You want to know what I am doing, do you? Well, that's a first because for four years you havent given a damn about what I was doing or why. You people need to understand something. Four years ago I left the World Wrestling Federation and came here to World Championship Wrestling. I didn't want to do that but do you know why I did? To get surgery on my neck, for health insurance and to see my daughter who is in attendance here tonight.

I was at one time the greatest wrestling manager in history. I managed Andre the Giant, Curt Hennig, Meng, Nick Bockwinkle, Rick Rude, and Ric Flair just to name a few. As an announcer I called the biggest moments in our sport with a good man, Gorilla Monsoon. But when I got here was I respected? No. I was treated like nothing by this company and by that blowhard italian up there in the announce booth.

And I figured fine, I will shut my mouth and collect my check and wait for WCW to die from the legacy of mismanagement that this company had. But then something happened. WCW got a clue! Eric Bischoff figured out how to create competition and make some real money and last night WCW made the most money that it ever made and I got to thinking...what am I doing with my life?

Starrcade made this company millions upon millions of dollars and I simply got to sit there and call the action instead of being part of it. Well the fact is, if this "wrestling war" is going to increase each company's bottom line, The Brain wants a bigger piece of the pie. The fact is I quit announcing for WCW and I am going back to what I do best. I am going to find someone here in WCW and mold him into a champion. I will mold him into a star and then I'll cash in...why?

Because I'm the Brain and I'm back."

[bobby drops the mic and leaves the ring. We see an astonished Tony and Mike as Tony calls for commercial and we see a graphic hyping the main event which is next.]

Match #6 Non Title: Curt Hennig vs Bret Hart

Curt is out alone followed by Bret. Curt starts by swatting his gum at Bret which gets a smirk as these two know each other so well. Early on Bret displays scientific prowess and takes control working on Curt's lower back but Hennig is able to shove Hart chest first into the turnbuckle and then he takes over. On the floor, Curt slams Hart's chest into the guardrail and throws Hart into the ring steps and suplexes him on the floor in the aisle. Back in the ring, Curt does a snap mare and a drop kick to the back of Bret's neck. A two count and then Bret is back in it but Curt takes control again when Bret is whipped into the corner and he slides, ribs first, into the ring post. Curt nails a piledriver for a two count and locks in an abdominal stretch. He leverages the ropes but the ref sees it and forces Curt to react which allows Bret to hip toss the champion.

Bret sends Curt into the ropes and hits a spinebuster for a 2 count of his own. He whips Curt into the corner and delivers a bulldog, then a back breaker and goes for the Sharpshooter. Hennig reverses it into a small package for a 2 count and goes for the Hennig-Plex but Bret drops down and hook's Curt's legs and locks in the Sharpshooter.

Curt tries to fight out of it but Bret wrenches back and Curt has no choice but to tap out.

Winner: Bret Hart

Grade: 79

[As Hennig is tapping, Syxx runs out and hits Bret from behind. This brings out Hall and they both pound on Hart. Diamond Dallas Page runs out from the back and he and Bret Hart fight off Hall and Syxx but that brings out Nash and, yes, Hogan.

The Outsiders, Syxx & Hollywood surround the ring while Bret and Page have their backs to each other preparing to fend off any attack. With Hogan directing traffic, the nWo get onto the apron and thats when the lights go out.....

....when they come back on, the World Heavyweight Champion, Sting, is in the ring with Hart and Page and all three have baseball bats in their hands. Hogan, Nash, Hall and Syxx get off the apron and back slowly from the ring and start backing up the aisle. Hart, Sting and Page stand united as Nitro goes off the air. ]

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler wish us a happy new year and welcome us to a new era in WWF history has seen in the opening video. They hype two of tonight’s matches; the Nation takes on the DOA and Ahmed Johnson in an eight man tag, and in the main event Owen Hart goes up against Triple H in a very heated matchup.

Speaking of Triple H the announcers are interrupted by D-Generation X who comes down to the ring. Michaels boasts about keeping his title at Saturday Night’s Main Event thanks to their insurance policy, shaking hands with Rude. He then says tonight Triple H and DX will end the scourge of the Hart family once and for all. Before Michaels can continue Commissioner Slaughter comes to the stage.

ROml6wX.jpg

He says that he hopes Michaels will be smiling later this month because he will be defending his title at the Royal Rumble but as for the opponent, that’s for Slaughter to know and for Michaels to find out which obviously angers the champion.

She’s wearing a wide smile as she kisses each of them on the cheek before collecting a mic. She says that she’s been waiting and waiting for someone in the WWF to impress her but nobody did. So she went outside to find some men who are ready to make an impact and that’s where these two come in. She then introduces us to the Impact Players.

The Nation dominates this affair, no pun intended to Farooq’s finisher. Even tagging and each of the members gets a piece of the action while DOA and Ahmed appear ineffective. They wear the chairs out on the tag champs, before pulling out a set of handcuffs and hooking Animal to a pipe backstage. They then double team Hawk, battering him down a hallway before they come out in front of the crowd, on the floor next to the stage. Suddenly Billy Gunn seems to have an idea and he tells Road Dogg who loves it. As Road Dogg climbs up to the stage, Gunn picks up Hawk for a piledriver. As JR shouts for them to stop and not do it, Road Dogg jumps off and completes the spike piledriver onto the floor. Hawk isn’t moving as officials and EMTs rush over. The faces of the Outlaws show they may realize they’ve gone too far.

Coming back from the commercial break, EMT’s are loading Hawk onto a stretcher with Animal by his side. Officials all look concerned and the announcers don’t say anything, letting the moment speak for itself.

Vader and Kane seem prepared for a monster of a match but Vader’s attacks on Kane seem to have no effect. Even when he hits a power move, Kane will sit up after a moment. Vader, growing frustrated, climbs to the top and flies with a moonsault following a running dropkick but Kane moves and Vader hits nothing. When the Mastadon climbs to his feet, Kane is awaiting and chokeslams Vader for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Kane

As Kane picks up Vader and tosses him over the top rope, Stone Cold Steve Austin, chair in hand, runs down the ramp and when Kane turns around, Austin crushes him with a headshot but Kane doesn’t go down, he just stumbles a little. Another shot, another stumble. Finally Austin hits him again and Kane falls down. But before Austin can even go half way up the ramp he sits up and we see Austin with a disbelieving glare.

Bearer gets on the mic and says nothing can stop Kane. But now Stone Cold has turned this personal. So next week, he challenges Austin to a rematch from Saturday Night’s Main Event. Bearer ends by saying he won’t be held responsible for Kane’s actions next week.

Backastage Owen Hart is on his way to the ring when he comes face to face with Vince McMahon. He tells Owen good luck and hopes there’s no hard feelings about ‘last year’. Hart looks disgusted and says he hopes there’s no hard feeling when he brings the WWF Championship back to where it belongs and walks off.

A great match between these two who exchange the momentum again and again over nearly fifteen minutes all around ringside. The action spills out early on and they spend several minutes, always breaking the referee’s count, punishing each other. The tide turns when Owen reverses a whip and sends Triple H into the post. From that point on Owen controls the flow, going to work on Triple H’s lower back. He does make a mistake which almost leads to a Pedigree but he counters, and quickly steps through into the Sharpshooter. Triple H tries to get to the ropes and is a foot away but Hart drags him back into the center of the ring and Triple H has to tap.

Winner by Submission: Owen Hart

As the bell rings, Owen cranks in the Sharpshooter, but Michaels slips into the ring, bashing him in the back of the head with the belt. Michaels goes on the attack and Triple H joins in when he recoups. Michaels motions to Chyna who’s come down to ringside and she slides in two steel chairs. As Triple H stomps Hart, Michaels puts one of Hart’s legs in the chair and as the announcers shout their concern and call for help, he swings the second chair down, and immediately Owen is in tremendous pain, reaching for his trapped leg before Michaels hits him again and again. Finally officials flood the ring but as JR points out the damage has been done and Owen Hart may have just suffered a career threatening injury. Michaels and Helmsley smirk and mock Hart as the show ends.

-As seen this week Monday Night RAW was live and will be going live every week unless pre-empted.</p><p>

-The planned world title match at the Royal Rumble is garnering ‘Once in a Lifetime’ buzz.</p><p>

-WWF is after two well known WCW performers whose contracts are coming to an end soon.</p><p>

-WWF released the Jackal and Jose Estrada Jr and sent Recon to WWF Northeast development. No word on plans for Kurrigan. The Brooklyn Brawler has also transitioned to an agent.</p><p>

-Saturday Night’s Main Event was a big success and it’s expected to return in 1998.</p><p> </p><p>

-WCW is said to be thrilled that Nitro has retaken the lead in the ratings battle at least for this week. It shows that there was intense interest in what happened after Starrcade. Internally, the company expects back and forth with the WWF going forward. </p><p>

-The big story coming out of Nitro was the debut of Shane Douglas from ECW. So, what happened? We are told that 12 days prior to last week's Nitro, ECW reached out to Douglas (who was working on a pay per night deal) about signing a full time contract with the promotion. ECW sources say Douglas was receptive. Then ECW began to really appear on WWF television and everything changed. Douglas began showing doubts and questioning the relationship between ECW and the World Wrestling Federation. He kept saying he didn't want to kiss Vince McMahon's ass and he wasn't happy that the promotion was doing a deal with the federation. Shane was scheduled to be at the last ECW show to continue discussions but he didn't come due to what he said was car troubles. That was Saturday night, the night before Starrcade.</p><p> </p><p>

Sunday he was unreachable and Heyman began to get suspicious that either WWF or WCW had done something. Douglas was not in DC for Starrcade apparently and Heyman had confirmed he was still at home in Pittsburgh on Sunday. He and Heyman talked briefly Sunday night and were supposed to talk more Monday. ECW found out just 30 minutes before Shane appeared on nitro that he was in Atlanta. He had been referenced on air as the ECW Champion but ECW vacated his title just before he appeared on Nitro.</p><p>

ECW sent a release to Time Warner and to the public saying he is not the ECW Champion, he is not under contract to ECW and all further use of ECW's name is to be ceased. Any further use of ECW's name or copyrights will result in legal proceedings. Sources say that ECW is really in dire straits now that they've lost their champion and Heyman is trying to lock who he can up to long term deals. </p><p>

-WCW released seven talent this week: Evan Karagias, Hammer, John Nord, Lodi, Louie Spicolli, Prince Iaukea and Riggs.</p><p>

-Backstage at Saturday Night, Wrath (real name Bryan Clarke) started a fight and was fired the next morning. He then took the radical step of filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against the promotion. Stay tuned.</p><p>

-With Bobby Heenan's new role in the company the announce teams have been restructured. Going forward Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay & Larry Zbyszko will call both hours of Nitro. Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Dusty Rhodes will call pay per views. </p><p> </p><p>
