ISL 1.6: Featherweight King of Japan

Quarter Final 1: Yagi Jokichi(Camp Mrs. MMAManiac) vs Yoshiro Makamori

One of karate’s elite, Yagi Jokichi’s masterful defensive fighting will be put to test against the rebellious bad boy of Japanese featherweight MMA, Yoshiro Makamori.

Quarter Final 2: Masahiro Maeno(Camp Judoku) vs Teruaki Ogi

Maeno is small for featherweight but he makes it up with his incredible tenacity and fine technical skills. Ogi is a dangerous BJJ competitor who has a very active guard but his woeful stand-up is an easily exploitable flaw.

Quarter Final 3: Shiba Inaba(Camp Soldierboy) vs Taki Inouye

Shiba Inaba is a one-dimensional puncher who hits very hard while his opponent Taki Inouye is an efficient Judoka who has a good ground game. An exciting striker versus grappler battle here.

Quarter Final 4: Tomohiro Takeuchi(Camp MMAManiac) vs Kei Maki(Camp Martel)

Takeuchi is the best featherweight in the world and would be the favorite to win this and get Camp MMAManiac their second trophy but Maki is an elite level kickboxer whose precision and speed are hard to match.

Quarter Final 2: Sammy Gaffigan(Camp Martel) vs Frank Romita(Camp Mrs. MMAManiac)

Round 1
: Gaffigan comes in fast and lands three quick punches and then hits Romita with a sensational high right head kick. Romita wobbles and falls but gets up at 5. He gets hit with a straight right and gets a cut under his eye. Gaffigan hits a left jab and then scores with a fantastic right cross. Romita is knocked out and he can’t get up.

Sammy 'The Stealth Shark' Gaffigan defeats 'The Banker' Frank Romita (TKO in 2:33 of round 1). The fight was rated as being Great.

Quarter Final 3: David James Diggle vs Philip Ziskie(Camp MMAManiac)

Round 1
: Ziskie hits a couple of jabs and also hits a right roundhouse kick to the body. Diggle gets suckered in by a feint and is left exposed. There's an exchange of strikes at relatively close range but nothing really lands. Both hit jabs but cannot hit the set-up strikes. 10-9 to Ziskie as round ends.

Round 2
: Ziskie is well off-target with a high kick and that leaves him wide open. Diggle attacks with a quick kick. He hits a jab but comes up short on a body kick. Ziskie hits a jab but has a left hand taken on the gloves. He lands a nice left hook. Diggle misses with a left jab but hits a vicious kick to the leg. Ziskie collapses, his legs utterly destroyed, there's no way he can continue - this fight is over.

David James Diggle defeats Philip 'Kid' Ziskie (TKO (Leg Kick) in 4:20 of round 2). The fight was rated as being Great

Quarter Final 4: Clint Royle(Camp Soldierboy) vs Marcus Speed

Round 1
: Speed lands a left jab but finds nothing but air with a big right. Royle shoots in for a single leg takedown and completes it. Speed smothers Royle with close control, stopping him from posturing up. Royle breaks the guard and swiftly applies an ankle lock...Speed has to tap out.

Clint 'Honey Badger' Royle defeats 'First Strike' Marcus Speed (Submission (Ankle Lock) in 4:58 of round 1). The fight was rated as being Decent.

Semi Final 1: Lamont Banner(Camp Judoku) vs Sammy Gaffigan(Camp Martel)

Round 1
: Banner is off-target with a jab but lands a nice right hook. Gaffigan lands a left jab and also hits a left roundhouse kick to the body. Seeing that Banner looks shattered, Gaffigan easily pulls him into a clinch. Using his wrestling skills, Banner pushes Gaffigan up against the cage and smothers him as round ends. 10-9 Banner.

Round 2
: Gaffigan slips past a right hook attempt and attacks with a powerful right head kick. Banner is knocked down but he manages to just get up at 9. Gaffigan throws four quick punches and lands two of them and then connects with a right hand. He further hits a right head kick. Banner misses with a big right hand, allowing Gaffigan to counter with a few quick left jabs. End of round. 10-9 Gaffifgan.

Round 3
: Banner misses with a big right hand, allowing Gaffigan to counter with a pair of left jabs that are followed by a stinging right high kick. Banner backs off until pressed against the cage and covers up, clearly rocked. Gaffigan immediately advances, sensing that this is a chance to end the fight. A huge right hand catches Banner behind the ear and sends him down. Banner is dazed and he stays down at the end of ten.

Sammy 'The Stealth Shark' Gaffigan defeats 'Lightning' Lamont Banner (TKO in 3:12 of round 3). The fight was rated as being Great. (Big Upset!!)

Semi Final 2: David James Diggle vs Clint Royle(Camp Soldierboy)

Round 1
: Diggle hits a left jab and then catches Royle with a hard low kick to the front leg. Royle looks like he wants to grapple but the threat of getting hit is keeping him from rushing in. A jab hits home from Diggle and then he catches Royle with a beautiful right kick to the head. He pulls Royle in a Muay Thai clinch and hits a knee to the side of the face……Royle is out cold.

David James Diggle defeats Clint 'Honey Badger' Royle (Knock Out (Knee) in 2:41 of round 1). The fight was rated as being Great.

Finals : Sammy Gaffigan(Camp Martel) vs David James Diggle

Round 1
: Gaffigan lets Diggle step in, ready to counter. He is off-target with a jab and also misses with an attempted shot to the body. The two fighters come together and strike but it's really tentative and nothing comes of it. Gaffigan uses a left jab and also hits a spinning kick to the body. Diggle misses a right cross that leaves him open to the counter. Gaffigan attacks with a solid right hand. Round ends. 10-9 to Gaffigan.

Round 2
: Diggle lands a left jab and also hits a right head kick. Gaffigan almost falls over as he backs off...that last shot may have genuinely rocked him. Diggle gets the Muay Thai clinch again and after two failed attempts, blasts Gaffigan with a powerful knee to the cheek. Gaffigan is knocked out.

ISL 1.8: Featherweight King of USA Review

David James Diggle kneed his way through the trophy, first putting down Ziskie and then Gaffigan in the finals, thus becoming the first ever non-aligned fighter to win a tournament and denting the hopes of all the team owners. Gaffigan gave Camp Martel a big reason to cheer early on when he got the better of Lamont Banner in a massive upset which ranks alongwith Datuk's victory over Sukarno in the list of upsets but he couldn't get the job done in finals. A very difficult card to predict overall.

I have always found the Featherweights to be the most unpredictable from game-to-game. More so than any division in the game. In some games Graeme Spark turns into an absolute world beater and in others he is the ultimate can. Watching how this turns out should be fun.
