WCW 2001: An Extreme Solution

As the year 2001 rolled around, the writing appeared to be on the wall for the once great World Championship Wrestling. Following a nasty public fallout with Vince Russo, the long term face of the company Hulk Hogan had walked out.

The company had already been struggling to come to terms with dwindling ratings and big name departures (The likes of Bret Hart, Scott Hall, Randy Savage, Chris Jericho, and Eddie Guerrero had all left for various reasons in the past 12 months).

Goldberg's untouchable aura had long since vanished, through poor feuds and questionable booking. Many blamed him for the retirement of Bret Hart, and attempts to freshen up the title picture had seen him floundering in midcard feuds with the likes of Kronik.

The nWo, the very institution which had thrust the company into the limelight 5 years prior, was unrecognizable. Gone were the days of the villainous outsiders taking over, and the fractured stable now had 2 flavours: Wolfpack and Hollywood. Neither really had any direction, and reeked of an attempt to continue selling a concept years past its sell by date.

These were only the in ring issues. AOL completed a merger with Time Warner just days before WCW Sin in January 2001, hinting very strongly that they were uninterested continuing to finance the company, seeing the entire industry not in keeping with their image.

Drastic changes were needed if the company was to see it through the first quarter, with most speculating that bankruptcy was all but guaranteed in the coming months.

The disappearance of ECW from TV screens a few months back hadn't helped WCW at all. Some might have expected them to acquire some of the fans of the extreme band, wrestling fans looking to satisfy a craving, but the absence of ECW only really served to put the two wrestling giants under a microscope, and in the one on one comparison, WCW fell flat.

The WWF was going from strength to strength, building superstars who were able to relate to the audience and adapt and stay relevant. WCW had become known as the stomping grounds for the has beens; the once greats of the sport who were now so out of touch with the fans, spoiled by lavish contracts and creative control.

Any new fans to wrestling would have been stunned at the very idea that WCW and WWF were ever even in the same league, and would have struggled to comprehend that Nitro once dominated RAW in terms of viewership and quality for the better part of two years.

We will join the attempt to rewrite wrestling history at WCW Sin 2001. The card remains the same going in, but the fallout will hopefully shake the very foundations of the industry for years to come!

Hey man, I'm always excited to not only see another WCW 2001 on the board, and it's even nicer to see another NB mod user! Most people go for the May one because it's a bit easier as you don't start off in the red and with the massive contracts. Best of luck!

Chavo Guerrero Jr - Chavo is a damn fine hand in the ring, so keeping the title on him can give you some very strong cruiserweight matches. Helms is still tied to 3 Count at the moment, so he needs to deal with that before dealing with holding a belt.

Big Vito - Though I would applaud anyone who tries to take on pushing Reno.

Jung Dragons - Even though they are very easy to become JTTS, the Dragons have the skills to hold their own. Moreso than Evan does, at least.

Mike Sanders - Unless you plan on dropping him as commissioner like they did in real life, but he makes a great sleazy midcard foil so he can go over here. Miller's schtick was fairly over toward the end of WCW though so I wouldn't blame you for going the other way here.

Team Canada - Hopefully you're able to do what I couldn't and get Skipper over enough that he doesn't drag down segments with the others.

Meng - I'm going to take a wild guess that you signed Meng to an extension so that he doesn't leave with the title like in real life.

NBT - Page and Nash are some of the only big main eventers you have left for Steiner to run through, so elevating them from the Tag titles is a must.

Shane Douglas - Hugh isn't a bad champ, but Douglas could be a better one.

Goldberg and Sarge - Kudos to you for actually going ahead with this nonsense, I didn't even have the stomach to book this as it was <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Scott Steiner - Literally the best person on the whole WCW 2001 roster. My biggest thing is wondering if you're going to keep the dynamic between he and Flair or if you're going to run with the Magnificent Seven like in real life.

Schiavone: Hello everyone, and welcome to the first Pay Per View event of the year, WCW Sin! I'm Tony Schiavone, joined by Scott Hudson. Scott, we've got a huge event ahead of us... Hudson: Absolutely! Not only do we see Goldberg and Sarge defend the new streak, but they battle for the future of Goldberg's career. Schiavone: And on top of that, we have a four corners match for the World Heavyweight Championship featuring the champion Scott Steiner defending against Jeff Jarrett, Sid Vicious and an as yet unidentified mystery opponent! Hudson: Still no word on who that is, but I can't wait to see whether this man, or indeed Sid Vicious can overcome Steiner and Jarrett. Schiavone: That is of course if Jeff Jarrett can be trusted! When it all comes down to it, and that big gold belt is on the line, alliances can go right out of the window! Hudson: I have to agree with you Tony. Lets get our action started tonight, as Chavo Guerrero Jr defends his title against Shane Helms, who earned his opportunity by beating his own partner Shannon Moore! <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45448" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Match One - Singles Match WCW Cruiserweight Championship Chavo Guerrero Jr © vs Shane Helms The opening match features some great back and forth action. Helms comes close on a number of occassions, but ultimately falls just short after Chavo reverses a vertebreaker attempt and scores a Brain Buster, followed by the pinfall for the win. What a valiant effort. I don't think I've seen Chavo pushed qui... Schiavone: I'm sorry to interrupy Scott, but I'm getting word that something has happened backstage! We go to the back, and see Reno lying unconscious, surrounded by trainers and medics. It becomes apparent that he has been savagely attacked backstage. Suddenly, someone runs into the shot, shouting for help. A couple of the medics get up from Reno and follow the man. They get right to work when they discover another man laying unconscious. Big Vito seems to have suffered the same fate as Reno! As people struggle to come to terms with the confusion, we return to the commentary booth. Rating: D+ Schiavone: I can't quite understand what we have just witnessed. Reno and Big Vito were scheduled to fight next, but neither man is in any shape to compete! What has happened? Hudson: Who could have done such a thing? Schiavone: I am speechless. We head to the locker room where it becomes quickly apparent that there has been more violence! Mike Awesome, Lance Storm, Konnan and Rey Mysterio all appear to be on the same page, as they are in heated discussions with commissioner Mike Sanders. The camera pans to show Elix Skipper and Billy Kidman lying prone, surrounded by medics, with EMT's arriving with stretchers! As the cameras make their exit from the scene, Mike Sanders looks completely lost, promising the members of Team Canada and the Filthy Animals that they will do everything they can to get to the bottom of this mess. Rating: C Schiavone: I'm sorry for this folks. For those of you just joining us, we have witnessed the aftermath of two brutal assaults backstage! Hudson: Absolutely discusting scenes. We have already lost one match from the card after Reno and Big Vito were taken out of the action. Someone is running roughshot backstage, and has so far attached Reno, Big Vito, Billy Kidman, and Elix Skipper! We've now had word that Skipper and Kidman have not been cleared for the 6 man Penalty Box Match, which has instead been made a tag team match. Hudson: I'm also hearing that the CEO Ric Flair has recently arrived, so hopefully order can be restored, and we can get this huge event back on track! <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45448" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Match Four - Penalty Box Match Team Canada (Mike Awesome & Lance Storm) vs The Filthy Animals (Konnan & Rey Mysterio) With Jim Duggan as the special guest referee, the match is anarchy. Duggen is forever blowing his whistle, sending the wrestlers into the penalty box. It was a miracle that the match kept the interest of the crowd. The standout performer, Lance Storm, picked up the victory after locking Rey Mysterio in the Canadian Maple Leaf. Duggan begrudgingly called for the finish as Mysterio was left with no choice but to tap. Winners: Team Canada Rating: C</div></div></blockquote> Schiavone: A great performance from Team Canada, with Lance Storm picking up the win for his team Hudson: And who would have thought it, proud America Jim Duggan called it right down the middle, awarding the win to Team Canada Schiavone: Lets go backstage, where Gene Okerlund is waiting outside of Ric Flairs office. Here's hoping we are about to find the identity of the mystery opponent for tonight's main event! We head backstage where Mean Gene is waiting by a door marked "CEO" Okerlund: I'm here waiting for Ric Flair. I'm told he is going to make a huge announcement! He was due to be with me already, so I'll just see if I can find out what's causing the hold up. Okerlund knocks on the door and waits for an answer. After a few moments of silence, Mean Gene opens the door, calling for Ric Flair... Okerlund: Oh my god! Somebody get some help! Gene rushes off to find some help, allowing the camera the chance to peer into the CEO's office. Flair is a bloody mess, struggling to get himself off of the floor. The mystery opponent is motionless, apparently having been put through the CEO's desk! Rating: C+ Schiavone: What the hell is going on back there? Is nobody safe? Our CEO Ric Flair has been laid out, and things don't look good for tonight's mystery opponent! Hudson: Something has to be done. Tonight should be a celebration. Out first pay per view of the year is being ruined, and we don't seem to be getting any closer to finding out who is behind all of this! <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45448" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Match Five - Triple Threat Hardcore Match WCW Hardcore Championship Terry Funk © vs Meng vs Crowbar A fun brawl sees the action head all over the arena. After battling through the backstage, including the womens toilets, the action makes its way towards the ring. We see Crowbar use a fire extinguisher, and Meng take multiple chair shots to the head, which barely wobble him. Ultimately, the match comes to a decisive ending after Meng blasts Crowbar with a chair and incapacitates Funk with the Tongan Death Grip, allowing himself to get the 3 count. Winner and NEW WCW Hardcore Champion: Meng Rating: D+</div></div></blockquote> Hudson: A deserving victory for Meng. I think you'll find that Meng might well keep this title for as long as he wants Schiavone: I couldn't have said it better myself. Able to hold their own in the power battles, they also display a clear speed advantage against the veterans. As the match wears on, DDP finds himself in trouble but makes the hot tag to Big Sexy. Nash begins turning the tides, but interference from Stasiak and Jindrak swings the balance firmly back in favour of the Natural Born Thrillers. Interference continues, allowing Palumbo to nail DDP with a chair, before Sean O'Haire hits the Seanton Bomb for the surprise win. Winners and NEW WCW Tag Team Champions: Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire Rating: C</div></div></blockquote> Schiavone: We have new champions! Hudson: Even with the interference, that was quite the performance from Palumbo and O'Haire. They went toe to toe with two legendary veterans, and have picked up the tag titles! Schiavone: Still to come tonight, General Rection defends the United States title against Shane Douglas, Goldberg's career is on the line, and Scott Steiner defends the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event! Let's head backstage to the new Commissioner, Ernest "The Cat" Miller... We head backstage to Ernest Miller. He stands, ready to talk to the camera. Miller: Somebody call my momma! What a night! I wish I had time to celebrate becoming commisisoner, but god damn, I got to deal with these goings on back stage. I have a message to whoever it is causing all of this havoc: you better find yourself somewhere good to hide. Because I am coming for you! You put your hands on the CEO, and that just won't slide with me. You've left me with no choice but to change tonights main event. I have decided that there will be no mystery opponent. Tonight, Steiner, Jarrett and Sid go head to head to head! So sayeth the Ca... Mike Tenay rushes into the scene, looking flustered! Tenay: Commissioner, you have to come with me! Something horrible has happened! Before the first bell, General Rection insists the referee search Douglas for another chain. The referee find one hidden in Douglas' trunks! In an even match, General Rection finds himself at the top of a ladder retrieving the chain, only for Douglas to topple the ladder! Douglas then retreives another hidden chain from his boots and cracks Rection across the face, releasing the crimson and forcing the end of the match Winner and NEW WCW United States Champion: Shane Douglas Rating: C+</div></div></blockquote> We return backstage to see Ernest Miller and Mike Tenay arrive in the parking lot. It's tough to see through the crowd, but finally a break in the madness allows a clear view of The Sarge DeWayne Bruce being loaded into an ambulance! Goldberg is nearby, favouring his ribs, but is refusing help. Schiavone: My God! More sickening scenes backstage. The Sarge has been beaten so severely that he is being taken away in an ambulance! Hudson: And did you see Goldberg? He can barely stand; I can only imagine the pain he is going through right now. Schiavone: I fear all we have is more questions about this mysterious backstage assailant, but I'll tell you one thing for certain. If you are brave enough to attack Goldberg, I am certain that nobody is safe! As EMTs try to give Goldberg treatment, he can be heard saying he has a match before pushing past them. His match against Totally Buff is next, and his career is on the line! Rating: B+ Hudson: Surely Goldberg isn't serious. He could have internal bleeding! Schiavone: And he is without his tag partner against two very dangerous opponents! I guess that makes it a handicap match! Hudson: Somebody needs to talk some sense in to him. His career is on the line in this match! Perhaps all of these backstage attacks have helped to unite the fractious roster. Nope! Bagwell quickly shows his true colours, and nails Goldberg with a cheap shot. What follows is a one sided beatdown. Goldberg is powerless to defend himself as Luger and Bagwell make him suffer. The boos ring out as the fans watch their injured hero being torn apart by his vindictive, remorseless opponents. After a blockbuster, Luger hoists Goldberg up into the rack, forcing fans to watch on as Goldberg is seperated from his consciousness, bringing a cruel end to his WCW career! Winners: Totally Buff</div> Rating: B-</div></blockquote> Schiavone: Scott, I am stunned. Even after all that has happened on this chaotic night, I never thought I would see this. Bagwell and Luger seemed to revel in ending the career of one of the true icons of this sport. Hudson: Nobody deserves to go out like that! Goldberg went out on his shield, but in reality, with the injuries he had sustained, he was outgunned and overmatched. I still prayed that he could pull it out of the bag, but unfortunately that was not the case. Schiavone: Ladies and gentlement, let this sink in. We have just witnessed the end of Goldbergs career. No fanfare, no celebration. Helped out by doctors after two vicious beatdowns; one from the assailant backstage, and then finally from these two hyenas feeling very proud of themselves: Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell! Hudson: It makes you sick! We head to the back where the Cat has called an impromptu meeting with the roster. Miller: Now, I don't pretend to know what's going on tonight. But we have a main event World Title Match still to come. And whoever has been causing the carnage must be stopped! Lance Storm and Mike Awesome approach. Storm: Cat, do you have any idea who is behind all of this? Or why? Awesome: Someone is going to get what's coming to them! They better know I won't be letting what they did to Primetime go without punishment! Miller: Look guys, I'm as confused as you. We still have one more match tonight, and we need to be on the lookout! Shane Douglas pushes through the crowd of bodies. Douglas: Now you listen to me Miller, we are at risk of this place becoming a mad house. Nobody is safe, everyone is on edge, and I for one am sick of it! Miller: Hey man, this isn't how I planned to spend my returning night as commissioner! Douglas: Look. I've got a feeling in my gut that whoever has caused all of this tonight isn't done. We need solidarity. I'm a champion now, and I want everyone to know that competition is sacred when 16lbs of gold is on the line! I've got an idea. Mike and Lance are clearly out for revenge. How about I take them ringside for the main event to make sure everything is kept under control? Miller: You know what, I don't really have any better ideas. Thanks Shane. And I mean this; you see anything about to go down tonight, you kick some ass! Douglas: You don't have to tell me twice! Shane Douglas, Lance Storm and Mike Awesome head to the arena and take up positions near the ring. It appears as though the events that have transpired are having a real effect on all three men. As they all begin to settle, the expected alliance between Jarrett and Steiner becomes apparent, as they work together to slowly wear down Sid. Sid finds some momentum suddenly, where he is able to knock Jarrett out of the ring. Steiner runs at him, right into a big boot. In a hurry, Sid get Big Poppa Pump to his feet and nails him with a chokeslam. Jarrett is in to make the save however, breaking up Sid's subsequent pinfall attempt. A huge commotion spreads through the crowd, as they begin to notice something untoward. Suddenly, three masked men hop the guardrail and climb into the ring, all carrying kendo sticks! Steiner, Vicious and Jarrett all get to their feet, exhausted from their intense match, and watch as the 3 masked men stare them down. Just as it looks like the masked men are about to attack, Douglas, Storm and Awesome storm the ring with chairs in hand to stop them! The masked assailants stop dead in their tracks as they are confronted by the 3 chair wielding opponents, out for revenge. Things take a sick twist however, as Shane Douglas looks first at Lance Storm, then at Mike Awesome, then back to the masked men, before a sinister grin spreads across his face. A moment later, and he spins round, cracking the steal chair off the head of Steiner! The referee calls for a stop to the match No Contest Rating: C+</div></div></blockquote> Storm and Awesome follow suit, attacking Jarrett and Sid, before being joined by the masked men. A 6 on 3 beatdown ensues, with Steiner, Jarrett and Sid being beaten and bloodied in front of the angry fans. With the main event competitors motionless in the middle of the ring, Douglas, Awesome, Storm and the masked men embrace. Then, one by one, the masked men reveal themselves... ... Justin Credible ... Rhino ... Rob Van Dam The crowd are stunned, struggling to come to terms with what they have just witnessed. Rating: C Schiavone: Oh my God! What am I seeing?! We are sure to have an action packed Monday Nitro this week, as the fallout from WCW Sin still weighs heavy on the mind. Several vicious backstage attacks had a drastic effect on the card, with matches being cancelled, wrestlers competing injured, and the World Heavyweight Championship match being thrown out!

To kick off the show, Ric Flair will address the 6 men responsible for last nights antics. What will he have in store for them?

General Rection makes the brave decision to invoke his rematch clause despite Douglas's recent actions, and new affiliations.

<div style="text-align:center;">WCW Monday Nitro Week 3 January 2001 Shrine Expo Centre, California Attendance: 4000</div> After A pyro display, a recap video is shown of the events that took place at WCW Sin, focussing particularly on the ending on Goldberg's career, and the backstage attacks. Schiavone: Hello everyone and welcome to Monday Nitro! Last night proved to be a low point in the illustrious history of this company. Not only did we see the end of Goldberg's career, mercilessly executed by Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell, but 6 men conspired in an attempt to ruin the show and indeed the main event. Hudson: That's right Tony. Shane Douglas, Lance Storm and Mike Awesome were at ringside during the main event, having convinced new comissioner The Cat that they would deal with any attempted interference. As it turned out, it was all a ploy, so they could join their low life aquaintences in carrying out an assault on the main event competitors! Schiavone: What should have been a great night for world championship wrestling, will now forever be overshadowed by their heinous actions! Ric Flair's music hits, and the nature boy heads down to the ring to an ovation from the crowd. His head is bandaged, and he has a slight limp, thanks to the events last night which saw him assaulted in his office. He climbs into the ring, and doesn't even wait for his music to stop... Flair: DOUGLAS! Shane Douglas, get out here right now! ...nothing... Flair: No surprise, a coward never changes! I may be sporting a few injuries, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it takes more than a 6 on 1 assault to keep down this wheelin, dealin, kiss stealin, jet flying, limosine ridin Nature Boy! WOOOOO! Let me tell you one thing Shane, you made the biggest mistake of your life! The actions of you, Mike Awesome, and Lance Storm will not be tolerated, and it is with great pleasure as CEO - WOOOOO - that I have the power to fire each and every one of you! So, for the last time, Shane Douglas, you and your lackeys need to get out here and face the music! Some unfamiliar music hits, and Flair looks on from the ring in confusion. Stranger: Woah, woah, woah! You might want to slow down a little. I'll get to what you just said in a minute; first let me introduce myself. As some of you may know, WCW's parent company recently merged, and whilst this transition is taking place, the top brass at the network decided they needed to bring someone in to steady the ship. That's where I come in. My name is James Mitchell, and I'm from the network! Flair: Who in the hell do you think you are, coming on to my show, and running your... Mitchell: I'm sorry to interrupt again Ric. I have been mandated by the network to ensure a smooth transition. And, this might sting a little Ric, but I have to inform you that I have been issued with powers equal to yours, and nobody is getting fired without a unanimous decision from the two of us. So, Ric, if you wouldn't mind, we have a lot of business to discuss. Could you please leave the ring so we can get on with the show? Flair: You think you scare me Mitchell? If you want me to leave this ring - my ring - you are gunna have to make me! The crowd are riled up as Flair takes off his jacket and begins unbuttoning his cuffs. Mitchell: Really? I ask you to discuss business, and you decide to act like a child. I had wished you would be more reasonable. Oh well, I'm sure you remember these guys from last night... Mitchell signals to the back, and out walk Justin Credible, Rhino and Rob Van Dam to a chorus of boos. Slowly, they make their way down towards the ring, and Ric Flair shows no signs of backing down. The three extremists get in the ring, with Credible trying to usher Flair out. Big mistake! Flair puts him on his back with a big right hand, before trying to catch Rhino and RVD by surprise. It doesn't take long before Flair is overwhelmed by the three men. They throw him from the ring, and continue their attack all the way up the ramp and to the back! Mitchell: Ladies and gentlement, please, enjoy the rest of the show. Bam Bam was noticably stumbling around the ring, and the Cat didn't look too happy after the final bell! Now Scott, what do you make of what we witnessed before the match? Hudson: I'm stunned. We had heard about the merger, but none of us thought there would be such an immediate effect! James Mitchell has been brought in, and it looks like he might have been behind last nights events! Schiavone: It begs the question. Why would Mitchell have given the orders last night if his role is to steady the ship? Hudson: I guess all will become clear in the coming weeks and months! Some funeral procession music hits, and Leg Luger and Buff Bagwell lead a procession to the ring. Behind them is a coffin, and Goldberg's picture displays on the big screen with the dates 1997-2001 underneath. The boos are deafening, as Bagwell and Luger really play up, pretending to be in mourning. They climb into the ring, and Luger begins to speak. Luger: It is with great sadness that we gather here today, to lay rest to the career of Bill Goldberg. And even though his career was ended by our hands, we share in the heartbreak. Bagwell: Wait...no we don't! Goodbye, good riddance! Goldy, your jack hammering days are done! Bagwell then spits on the coffin, and the two men push it over before leaving the ring, laughing all the way to the back. I know I should be impartial, but after what transpired last night, I was hoping for a different result in that match! Schiavone: I struggle to disagree with your sentiment Scott. Vignette: The lights are dimmed, and attention is focussed on the big screen. It shows rain pouring in the dead of night, followed by a crack of thunder and a burst of lightning. The video ends with the text 'A World in Darkness' Rating: B+ Sid Vicious is seen backstage. He bursts into The commissioners office, and demands a match with anybody. Schiavone: He looks ready to snap! Speaking of people at breaking point, let's go backstage to Ric Flair. Ric Flair is pacing in his office like a man possessed. Clearly furious at being man handled out of the ring earlier in the night, it appears as though DDP and Kevin Nash arrive just in time to cool him down. Nash: Hey, Naitch, you need to take it easy. This is exactly what James Mitchell and his little band of boys wants. DDP: Big Kev is right! You need to get your head together, lead the locker room, and together, we will do whatever it takes to put an end to this. Flair slows his pacing, clearly glad to know he has people on his side. Flair: Thanks guys. I know we can't go wrong with people like you on board. Say, do you think you could do me a favour? Nash: Sure, naitch! Flair: Looks to me like I am short of a main event. I've got two main eventers standing in front of me, and two no good sons of bitches that need to be taught a lesson in Mike Awesome and Lance Storm. What do you say? DDP: Like you even needed to ask... <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45448" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Main Event - Tag Team Match The Insiders (Kevin Nash & DDP) vs Lance Storm & Mike Awesome The Insiders initially get the upper hand, taking it in turns to punish Lance Storm. The momentum starts to swing however after Storm gets the boots up against DDP in the corner. He makes a quick tag to Mike Awesome, who then uses his big power game to firmly turn the tide. DDP looks in agony with every punch and body slam that he takes. Frequent tags between the villains allow them to really begin to dominate. You can never count out DDP though, and out of nowhere he nails Mike Awesome with a Diamond Cutter! The crowd errupt, but it soon becomes apparent that he doesn't have the gas in the tank to make a cover. After a few moments of both men lying motionless, DDP and Awesome begin to stir, slowly making their way to their respective corners. The ovation is deafening when Big Sexy gets the hot tag, and he cleans house, nailing Lance Storm with a Big Boot, bofore hitting snake eyes in the corner. The mood quickly turns sour however, as Shane Douglas, RVD, Rhino and Justin Credible hit the ring and begin dismantling the Insiders. The referee calls this one off! Winners by DQ: The Insiders Rating: B-</div></div></blockquote> After the match, the extremists continue their beat down, in a scene with a strikiing resemblance to that of the previous night. The crowd goes wild however, as Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett and Sid Vicious charge the ring with weapons in hand! Shane Douglas and company all bail before Steiner, Jarrett and Vicious have a chance at retribution. The show goes off the air with the World Champion screaming at the 6 men to come back to the ring, whilst Jarrett and Vicious help Nash and DDP back to their feet. Rating: B Overall Show Rating: C+

WCW Press Statement

It is with regret that World Championship Wrestling today came to terms with the releases of Bam Bam Bigelow and Sgt. AWOL.

Additionally, Buff Bagwell has been issued with a 1 month suspension, effective immediately.

-Whilst no specific details were released, speculation is rife that the termination of Bam Bam Bigelow and Sgt. AWOL was drug related. Interestingly, it is thought Buff Bagwell fell foul for similar reasons, but has received a less severe punishment, presumably because of his position in the company.

-There is growing speculation that new owners AOL may be looking to distance themselves from the WCW product. The company is currently losing money, and AOL are not thought to be keen on the large contacts and low numbers, feeling that the wrestling industry as a whole doesn't fit in with their vision. This is causing large concerns backstage, considering WCW's TV and PPV deals both have only a little over 2 months to run.

Things are looking up, after what transpired at the end of last week's show! Hudson: Absolutely. The WCW locker room came together to fend off the attacks of these extreme invaders. Schiavone: I guess it goes to show how dire the situation has become in such a short space of time, that Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett would come to the aid of Dallas and Page. Hudson: And what a devastating force they will be, especially when you add in Sid Vicious. I think these underhanded tactics will quickly be wiped out! James Mitchell's music hits and the network associate heads down to the ring to a chorus of boos. Mitchell: I'm not out here to waste anybodies time. I would like to speak to Ric Flair, to try and make right the wrongs of last week. So please, Ric, come on out here. The Nature Boys music hits, and he walks out with a smug confidence. Clearly pleased with himself over the ending of last weeks show, Flair feels as though he got some revenge after being ejected from the ring earlier in the night! Mitchell: So, last week... Flair: WOOOOO! James Mitchell, last week you thought you had all the cards. You thought you could bring your rag tag group of wish they were somebodies to World Championship Wrestling and make a scene! Well, that didn't work out too well for you in the end; WOOOOO! Mitchell: Ric, you've got me all wrong. I'm here to help. And to prove it, and hopefully to cement the foundations of a great working relationship between you and I, I thought I would share my idea with you. I think you are going to like it! Flair plays up a little for the crowd, clearly showing that he doesn't trust James Mitchell. Mitchell: Before I tell you my idea, I need someone else to come to the ring. Shane Douglas, could you please come out here? The Franchise makes his way to the ring, looking confused at the part he is going to play in all of this. He climbs between the ropes, awaiting what Mitchell has to say. There is clear tension between him and Flair. Mitchell: Now, Ric, I know you aren't happy with what's been going on the past couple of weeks. I know you don't want want of "my" guys holding one of "your" belts, and you won't quit until you rectify that. Am I right? Flair: Like you wouldn't believe. The fact that Douglas is holding that beautiful title is a disgrace! Mitchell: So, onto my idea. I was thinking that Shane Douglas could defend that title tonight in the main event. How do you like the sound of this: Douglas vs Flair for the United States Championship in an I Quit Match?! Shane Douglas completely loses it. He can't believe what James Mitchell has just suggested. Ric Flair can't quite believe it either, but he looks extatic. Flair: Flair vs Douglas, I quit match, US title on the line, WOOOOO! No funny business? Mitchell: You have my word. How about we add another stipulation: anyone who interferes in the match will be fired! Flair is absolutely loving this, as Douglas is going mad beside them. Flair: Well, James Mitchell, you have yourself a deal! Shane Douglas, start saying your goodbyes, because tonight, when I beat your ass so badly that you utter those beautiful words.... Mitchell: Hold on Ric. I think you've misunderstood! You are the CEO. It would be a huge conflict of interest for you to be involved in a match, whilst carrying out duties as an executive. Why, that would be the very definition of an abuse of power! Ric, what we have just agreed to - a binding agreement I might add - is that in tonight's main event, Shane Douglas will face your son, David Flair in an I Quit match! And anyone who interferes, yourself included, will be fired from the company! An evil smile breaks across the face of the Sinister Minister, and Douglas' demeanour changes dramatically. Ric Flair looks shell shocked as he realises he has just walked into a trap, and that his son will have to pay for it! It is clear that they are all annoyed that the extremists keep running in on their matches. Steiner: Me and Jeff got a match tonight! I can't wait to put a beating on those jackoffs tonight! Jarrett: They think they can come in here and take over our house? They got another thing coming! Storm and Awesome made the biggest mistake of their lives, siding with those slapnuts! Last week at Sin I get assaulted by 3 men, and not only were you not there to have my back, but now you seem to be working with them? What the hell! Storm: Elix, let's be serious for a minute. We were a team, but let's face it. You were always a little bit less 'Prime Time', and a little bit more 'Dead Weight'... Before Lance's words have a chance to sink in properly, Mike Awesome grabbed Skipper by the head and launched him through the air, sending him crashing through the wall! Storm and Awesome then calmly continued preparing for their match tonight. Rating: D Schiavone: The depths that these guys will go to absolutely disgusts me! With Kaz Hayashi out of the ring, Kidman took the opportunity to hit the Shooting Star Press on Karagias for the win. Vignette: The lights are dimmed, and attention is focussed on the big screen. It shows rain pouring in the dead of night, followed by a crack of thunder and a burst of lightning. The video ends with the text 'A World Without Hope' Rating: B+ Backstage, RVD, Justin Credible and Rhino are discussing plans for later tonight. Suddenly, they are ambushed by DDP, Kevin Nash and Sid Vicious. With no time to prepare, they are overwhelmed, and DDP, Nash and Vicious use the bodies of their emenies to trash the backstage area! I don't know what those guys had planned for tonights match between Storm, Awesome, Steiner and Jarrett, but I think it's safe to say their plans have been cancelled! It's plain to see how worried Ric is for his son, but he gives him words of encouragement regardless. Unfortunately for Ric, his worst fears are immediately realised, as Shane Douglas absolutely destroys David with his father looking on helplessly. After a one sided beating in the ring, Douglas throws Flair through the ropes, and continues his assault at ringside! Douglas gets a chair and repeatedly cracks it against the spine and head of David, who cries out in pain with every shot, a sea of crimson covering his face. It is clear that Douglas is trying to send a message to Ric, as every time the referee tries to get in a position to ask David if he wants to quit, the Franchise performs a quick manouver, preventing Flair from answering. The conclusion of the match comes after Douglas sends David back into the ring and scores with a nasty looking fisherman buster. David is not moving after that! Even so, the Franchise mounts David and lays into him with right hand after right hand. The uneasy scenes continue without mercy, until Ric Flair climbs to the apron and signals for the end of the match. Winner and STILL WCW United States Champion: Shane Douglas Rating: D</div></div></blockquote> After the match, Douglas insists on Ric Flair handing him the United States title before he leaves the ring. Surveying the carnage he caused, Douglas cuts an evil figure at the top of the ramp, laughing at Ric Flair as he attends to the limp, lifeless body of his son.
