NWA:TNA An Alternate Reality

Recommended Posts

1 April 2001

The three largest wrestling companies in the US have dwindled down to one. The WWF's only competition, WCW and ECW, have both gone out of business leaving a gap in the market for a true alternative.

As one of the few employees not offered a contract by Vince McMahon, Jeremy Borash finds himself without a job, but not for long. Managing to negotiate some financial backing, he backs himself to own and book his own new wrestling promotion that could be a viable mainstream alternative to the WWF.

This is an alternative reality series so whilst so events may be inspired by what actually happened, I'm essentially going to be playing this series with what I've got. For those interest, I'm using The Death of WCW mod created by Genadi/The Mod Squad. My graphics are a combination of different picture packs I've acquired over the years so massive thanks to anyone who's contributed towards them over the years.

You're in for a treat as you'll be witnessing some history tonight! Speaking of which, allow me to introduce my esteemed broadcast partner, none other than the legendary Bobby "The Brain" Heenan!

Heenan: I'm not quite sure how I've ended up here but I've been offered a fair bit of money so let's see how we end up. Although I'm thinking this company might already be history if that pyro display is anything to go by...

Lawler: And now let's head along to ringside with our play-by-play announcer for the evening; The Professor himself! Mr Mike Tenay.

Tenay: Thank you very much Jerry for that very warm introduction. I'm absolutely thrilled to be invited here tonight and I think we've got a very special night coming up. As my broadcast colleagues make their way to join me, let's head to the ring with Jeremy Borash as we pay homage to some of the legends that have paved the way for us here tonight.

The camera cuts to Jeremy Borash in the ring who announces a parade of legends who each make their way down one-by-one. Terry Gordy jogs about behind him, followed closely by Terry Funk make idle small talk as they walk down together. John Tenta makes his way out next with a huge smile on his face as Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson of The Rock n Roll Express follow him out. Finally, there's a short pause before... I don't like the way you're treating those men who have paved the way for us being here tonight! I'm not a big fan of crowning a champion in a battle royal, in fact, I think the idea sucks. But that's only because I want to make sure that you're the one I eliminate to become this company's first every champion!

The crowd cheer in anticipation as we cut to a video package advertising the weekly PPV format that will be NWA-TNA's signature. In fact, the only thing noteworthy about this match is that one of the Bells had particularly bad co-ordination and his timing was all off.

A vignette starts playing with an industrial backdrop. There's red lighting everywhere which creates a sinister mood. Speaking of sinister, the camera moves upwards to reveal Father James Mitchell, who addresses the camera directly.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/James%20Mitchell%203.jpg

Mitchell: This little company of ours may have only just had it's birth but I've already had visions about it's demise. Allow me to introduce you to... consequences.

The camera moves slowly to the side where we see the abdomen of the person stood beside Mitchell the entire time. Chase almost gets something resembling a hope spot in but can't gain enough momentum to really make a difference.

The arena is bathed in red light as Knox stands victorious after the match. The two big men meet in the middle of the ring but even Apolo is dwarfed by Knight! Naturally, Inferno decides this is the perfect time to start dancing. This gets the attention of Brown & Apolo, who make short work of throwing Disco over the top rope.

Disco Inferno has been eliminated!

Brown & Apolo go back to locking up.

Entrant Eleven:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Ernest%20Miller%2098.jpg

Ernest Miller

Ernest comes out his usual flamboyant self. The two big men are still locked up in the ring as he enters, so Miller continues shuffling his feet as he plays to the crowd. Not learning his lesson from the man before him, Apolo & Brown take exception to this and throw him straight out.

Ernest Miller has been eliminated!

Apolo and Brown start trading punches back and forth as the clock ticks down.

Entrant Twelve:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/James%20Storm%202k1.jpg

James Storm

The blue chipper James Storm makes his way to the ring. Unlike the two men before him, he fares much better and puts up much more of a fight. Unfortunately though, the other two are just too much for Storm and he unfortunately gets sent flying over the top rope.

James Storm has been eliminated!

Entrant Thirteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Gangrel.jpg

Vampire Warrior w/ Luna Vachon

Vampire Warrior comes jogging to the ring. He originally appears to be overwhelmed facing the two men already in the ring. This time however, Luna is on hand to offer support and does a good job distracting Apolo, and then Monty, allowing her man to again an advantage. Warrior manages to land enough offense to break the momentum of the two big men.

Entrant Fourteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Sonny%20Siaki.jpg

Sonny Siaki

The impressive looking Siaki makes his way to the ring and gets upper hand over the three men already inside. He hits a good mixture of solid power moves with flashy high-flying abilities and looks very impressive in the process. He's just cut off by Warrior before he's able to eliminate Apolo.

Entrant Fifteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Ray%20Leppan.jpg

Ray Leppan

The tall Ray Leppan looks impressive in the early goings but isn't able to gain enough momentum to eliminate any of the other competitors.

Entrant Sixteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Curt%20Hennig%209.jpg

Curt Hennig

The ring starts filling up as Hennig takes pot shots at everyone in there. He dispatches a couple guys with pitch-perfect Perfectplexes. With everyone down, he picks up a vulnerable Ray Leppan and throws him over the top.

Ray Leppan has been eliminated!

Entrant Seventeen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Norman%20Smiley%2098.jpg

Norman Smiley

The ever popular Norman Smiley comes out taking everybody down with clotheslines. He tries to catch an unaware Curt Hennig with a big wiggle who manages to slither away just in time. In the mean time, Apolo & Monty are still facing off on the other side of the ring and their match-long rivalry comes to a head as Monty is able to over-power Apolo and send him crashing to the outside!

Apolo has been eliminated!

Entrant Eighteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Carly%20Colon%202.jpg

Carly Colon

Carly runs to the ring attacking everyone with dropkicks. He's just about to eliminate Hennig who is able to use his experience to counter and send Carly over the top. Curt however is unaware that Carly has managed to hold on, and he skins the cat to find his way back into the ring. He catches an off-guard Hennig with a clothesline from behind as the clock ticks down.

Entrant Nineteen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/RVD%2099.jpg

Rob Van Dam

RVD comes out on-fire, throwing punches and kicks left, right and centre. Eventually, the two men left standing are Hennig and RVD himself. Hennig slides under the bottom rope as Van Dam goes to give chase. In the meantime, Colon tries to take advantage of the situation by throwing RVD over! Van Dam recovers just in time to reverse the attempt and throw Carly over the top instead.

Carly Colon has been eliminated!

With RVD's back turned, Hennig seizes the opportunity to try and throw RVD over, who is able to hold on and rolls gratefully back into the ring as the clock ticks down.

Entrant Twenty:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Shane%20Douglas%207.jpg

"The Franchise" Shane Douglas

Douglas makes his way to the ring as everyone keeps fighting in the ring. As soon he slides in, Douglas takes advantage of a vulnerable Norman Smiley to throw him over the top from behind!

Norman Smiley has been eliminated!

Each man takes a different corner as we're down to the final four: Shane Douglas, Curt Hennig, Rob Van Dam & Monty Brown. RVD goes after Douglas and Hennig goes after Monty as they brawl on opposite sides of the ring.

RVD whips Douglas over the tope rope and manages to hold on. However, Van Dam is right on top as he clotheslines him onto the apron and he rolls off.

Shane Douglas has been eliminated!

The Franchise has a tantrum on the floor as Hennig throws Monty over the top. Brown keeps hold but Hennig pounds away at Monty's grip until he can't hold on any longer and falls to the outside.

Monty Brown has been eliminated!

The final two men, Rob Van Dam and Curt Hennig, start circling each other as the crowd get to their feet. We're seconds away from history as both men jockey each other towards the ropes. Their momentum sends them both flying over the top rope but they both land on the apron.

Both men get to their feet and start chopping each other, trying to knock the other man off. Hennig is tiring and RVD looks to be getting the upper hand when, out of nowhere, Shane Douglas pops up out of nowhere to pull RVD down. Van Dam stumbles to the outside as the bell rings.

RVD has been eliminated!

Hennig surveys the scene and realises he's the last one remaining. His music starts playing as he stumbles back into the ring in exhaustion. Douglas smirks as he backs off to the top of the ramp to survey the scene from afar.

Borash:

The winner of the 20-man battle royal, and your first ever NWA-TNA Heavyweight Champion.. Curt Hennig!

Steamboat walks past the stage and down the ramp with the NWA-TNA Heavyweight Championship belt in hand, giving Douglas a disapproving look on his way past. Steamboat enters the ring and hands the title belt to Hennig, who demands Steamboat put it around his waist.

RVD is starting to stumble to his feet as he realises what's just happened. Hennig celebrates gratuitously in the ring as RVD's focus switches from Hennig towards Douglas on the ramp. Douglas applauds Hennig the stage and gives RVD a shrug as he heads backstage.

The show ends with some signature cheap-looking pyro falling from the ceiling as Hennig celebrates with his newly-won championship belt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/NWA%20TNA.jpg

We saw the debut of a new promotion this Wednesday with NWA: Total Nonstop Action. Only time will tell if this upstart company will fill the void left by the recent closures of WCW & ECW. Critically the show got mixed reviews although the first viewing figures are rumoured to be less than stellar.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/kinealg/Mike%20Bell%202k6.jpg

In other news Mike Bell, one half of the Bell Brothers tag team that worked the event, has already been released by NWA:TNA according to our sources. Insiders say this behaviour backstage was questionable and, whilst we don't know for certain, rumours are circulating that he was intoxicated on either drugs or alcohol during his match.

There's also rumoured to be some heat from management towards his brother Mark Bell. Whilst Mark was reportedly sober, NWA:TNA higher-ups are less than pleased that he didn't report his brother's behaviour. We'll have to see if Mark Bell features again for the company in the coming weeks although our sources say he remains under contract at this time.

RVD and Hennig are both able to hit finishers on each other during the course of the match. RVD looks like he's about to win the match after hitting a Five Star Frog Splash but Shane Douglas appears to pull the referee out of the ring. RVD is able to get revenge straight away as he attacks Shane Douglas, throwing him first into the barricade, then into the ringpost, before hitting a DDT onto the arena floor with unsurprisingly keeps Douglas lying down.

Hennig however has been able to recover in the meantime and is able to catch RVD from behind and throw him into the barricade. He then manages to take him over it with a perfectly-placed clothesline. At this stage, the two men start brawling around the building, much to the delight of the sold-out crowd. However, their attention is so focused on one another that they don't notice the referee has regained conciousness and miss his ten count. As a result, the ref calls for the bell and declares the match a no contest.

RVD looks over to the referee from the crowd and shakes his head in disbelief. He doesn't stay distracted for long as he turns his focus back to Hennig. The two men continue brawling to the point where security have to come back out to break them up. The show goes off the air among utter chaos as around a dozen men try to keep RVD & Hennig apart.

Low Ki & Christopher Daniels

The opening contest is a great spectacle where all four men get to showcase their signature spots. Matt Sydal manages to take out both Daniels and Low Ki with a drive to the outside. He picks up Daniels and rolls him into the ring where AJ picks him up to finish him off with a Styles Clash.

The camera cuts to what appears to be backstage. The scene is dark and gloomy, set against an industrial-looking background. The area is dimly lit apart from a single red light casting a shadow over four barely distinguishable figures.

Vampire Warrior: I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean...

We hear a maniacal laugh as Father James Mitchell steps into the shot, with 'Consequences' Mike Knox stood behind him.

Father James Mitchell: The thing is, Mr Warrior, I've been watching your matches the past few weeks with great interest. It's clear to me that you've found yourself in a bit of a rut. You've got all the tools and experience you need, you've just struggled to put them together in the right order.

Vampire Warrior, accompanied by Luna, listens keenly.

Father James Mitchell: What you need to be willing to accept, is that you're stuck in limbo. Where you really should be however.. is in Purgatory...

Mike Knox steps closer and without saying a word, sticks his hand towards Vampire Warrior. Warrior and Luna look at each other for a moment. Whilst they do so, Knox appears to get some sort of blade and uses it to make contact with his outstretched hand. Seeing this elicits a smile from Warrior who returns the favour and shakes it. Father James Mitchell goes back to laughing manically as Luna joins in shortly after. Jody Fleisch

Despite the best efforts of Diamond, this is a back and forth match where neither man is able to keep momentum for long. The turning point comes when Fleisch has Simon pinned long enough for a 3 count. Unfortunately, Dawn Marie pulls the referee out of the ring before he's able to complete the count. This prompts the referee to eject Dawn from the ringside area. It's a bit to late however as Diamond hits Jody with a low blow whilst the referee isn't looking before following up with a Simonizer.

The camera moves backstage where we see a close-up of the NWA:TNA Heavyweight Championship which is neatly set up on a table. We've already got ourselves an NWA:TNA Champion.. but we have got a title to recognise some of the brilliant tag teams we seem to have in this company. Rob Van Dam

Van Dam does well in the early going to keep control of the match despite the numerical disadvantage. During the early stages, Hennig in particuar sees to be acting rather paranoid, constantly looking over his shoulder and around the arena, convinced RVD has something up his sleeve.

Eventually however, Hennig & Douglas are able to outlast RVD, who gets gradually worn down as the two men are able to tag in and out to keep each other fresh. RVD battles vailantly but is ultimately undone when hit with successive finishers by both Hennig & Douglas.

Following the match, Douglas & Hennig continue their beatdown on RVD when a familiar face sprints onto the rage and down the ramp before sliding into the ring. Sabu has come to NWA:TNA to save his old friend Rob Van Dam!

Heenan: Why has he only just come out when the match is over?

Lawler: This must be Van Dam's back-up plan!

Tenay: From what I know about RVD, he will have wanted to try and win the match by himself, but he clearly didn't trust Hennig & Douglas to play by the rules!

Sabu helps Van Dam to his feet as they stare down both Douglas & Hennig, who both look like they've seen a ghost! RVD drops down to one knee as Sabu paces back and forth frenetically. He looks as though he's about to give chase to Hennig & Douglas but RVD is able to convince him to stay. Hennig & Douglas dominate both of the match with Harris & Storm using some expertly executed tag team moves to get back into the swing of things.

James Storm looks like he has the match won after hitting Curt Hennig with the Eye of the Storm but Shane Douglas is in just in time to break up the three count. Douglas then takes the opportunity to blindside the referee, opening up an opportunity to double-team the vulnerable James Storm.

Before they can do so, Sabu appears on the stage as Hennig & Douglas both look like they've seen a ghost. As their backs are turned, Rob Van Dam runs in from behind to take them both out with a steel chair. America's Most Wanted score the upset over Hennig & Douglas.

Following the match, America's Most Wanted make their escape once they see the looks on the faces of Douglas & Hennig. It's time to settle this one as men.

Having said his piece, Piper returns backstage as the camera focuses on the four men in the ring.
