Eric Bischoff's UFC: 1991+

Recommended Posts

As the new year turned, Eric Bischoff, the former announcer for the American Wrestling Association, found himself unemployed following a failed audition for the World Wrestling Federation and having no interest from World Championship Wrestling. While both companies on top enjoyed good success, their creative visions reeked of sameness and a lack of forward momentum. This was no longer the 1980s. Superheroes and supervillains were just not going to be as cool anymore.

Every good businessman is always two steps ahead of the game. For a guy like Bischoff, who stumbled into the wrestling business but has taken to it like a fish to water, the wrestling industry needed to evolve into something much more realistic. The cartoon world of wrestling peaked when Hulk Hogan bodyslammed Andre The Giant in front of 93,187 screaming fans inside the Pontiac Silverdome. That was five years ago.

With much interest in the developing scene over in Japan, the much more "real" version of professional wrestling appealed to Bischoff, who he himself had a background in martial arts. With the impending opening of shoot influenced companies like UWFi and Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi (following the closure of the Universal Wrestling Federation), this opportunity to bring the blooming style to the United States arose and was that next step the American wrestling scene needed.

This is no-nonsense fighting. This is a competition to see who exactly is the better fighter. No gimmicks, no frills, no bullshit. The only way to win is by knockout, submission, or referee stoppage. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is here to determine who is the best in the world when it comes to stepping inside the squared circle for legitimate competition.

Welcome to Eric Bischoff's Ultimate Fighting Championship, live from beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is as real as it gets.

<p>I'm so glad to see a Shoot Style promotion finally be done here! I've been doing a current day promotion, but it's really cool to see someone do one when it was at its biggest. </p><p> </p><p>

Because I could easily lose the predictions, I'll just say that I highly recommend signing Takada, Albright, Masakatsu Funaki, and Suzuki. Guys that really made both UWFi and PWFG as big as they got.</p>

Either this is kayfabed, in which case Gordy refuses to lose, or it's real, in which case the game puts him over anyway.</p><p>

Just out of curiosity, what difficulty did you start with the promotion? If you want to say it of course.

I have to assume that hyper-realism will be the key feature isn't it?

<p>It's great to see shoot-style get some love around here. Personally, since RINGS was unfortunately removed from the the TEW16 version of the mod (and the lack of its prominent stars like Dick Vrij and Hans Nijman), I've had the idea of Maeda starting the company in America instead.</p><p> </p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">A true catch-as-catch-can bout started this contest as Finlay and Saint traded the upper hand with different World of Sport-esque holds to try and grab the early submission. Finlay fought off a heel hook attempt and nearly knocked Saint into a retirement home with a closed right to the jaw, but Saint managed to keep his composure and bring the match back to the ground. Finlay tried to wrangle out of an arm lock but had no choice but to tap out in what has been the longest match in UFC history so far.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> JOHNNY SAINT</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 6:58</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 43</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">A big battle between the United States of America and the U.S.S.R. here as Terry Gordy battled Victor Zangiev. Victor, the amateur wrestling specialist, shot for the legs but Gordy simply kneed him in the face to draw first blood. Gordy beat him down with lefts and rights, but Zangiev fought back and planted Terry with a beautiful bridging German suplex to put the pressure on the back. Gordy fought out of it and managed to clip Victor with a vicious lariat to the temple to knock him out and finish this fight.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> TERRY GORDY</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time: </b>5:29</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 58</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

Garvin managed to escape an early Guillotine choke, but Severn was quick to follow it up with a few suplexes to exhaust the old schooler. When Garvin wouldn’t go down without a fight, Severn hit the first piledriver of the night and followed it up with a devastating arm bar to get the submission victory.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> DAN SEVERN</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time: </b>4:44</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 63</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">A total clash of styles here as the insane Cactus Jack started the match by rushing the cold-blooded Steven Regal. Jack beat down the Brit with some forearms and punches, but Regal managed to grab the arm on one and counter with an arm wringer in the ropes. Regal gouged at the eyes of Cactus and used that momentum shift to properly take this match to the mat – Regal’s domain. As Cactus tried to get up, Regal planted a Knee Trembler right to the temple and followed it up with the Regal Stretch. Cactus, ever the fighter, refused to tap out and forced the referee to call for the bell once he passed out from the pain.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> STEVEN REGAL</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 2:51</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 53</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Mexico’s masked Fuerza Guerrera takes on America’s Joe Malenko in a highly competitive contest. Fuerza’s speed keeps him aggressive early on as he manages to snake his way out of Joe’s early submission attempts. Malenko did manage to take Guerrera down to the mat, but the masked marvel easily jumped out and nearly knocked Joe out with a devastating dropkick to the back of the head. The action continued for a little bit until Malenko, highly regarded as Frank Gotch’s best student, planted Fuerza with a double underhook powerbomb and forced the luchador to tap to the Cloverleaf.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> JOE MALENKO</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time: </b>4:29</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 48</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

The southern friend brawling style of Bob Holly meant he had absolutely no defensive skills when Dean Malenko started the match with a takedown. </div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Whew! What a first round that was, folks! Dean Malenko is surely one to watch but will the family ties hurt his strategy in the second round when he faces his brother Joe? And while we are in beautiful Las Vegas, I can’t put a bet on any of these guys going into the second. There are too many styles at play and too many hungry competitors to pick just one. Let’s get back down to ringside for the second round as we will crown the first-ever Ultimate Fighter tonight!</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Both individuals are masters of adapting to their opponent’s style of fighting, so this was a standstill at the opening bell. Shamrock managed to connect with a few suplexes early on to rock Maeda, but Akira fought back with some hard strikes to knock Shamrock back. As the action continued on the mat, neither man was able to lock in a submission hold. The action returned to a vertical base as both men lit each other up with heavy strikes. Maeda started gushing blood from a cut on his forehead and Shamrock was ready to end it. After a high kick to the head to knock Maeda senseless, Shamrock grabbed the leg and applied the Ankle Lock for the tap out victory.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> KEN SHAMROCK</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 6:50</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating: </b>62</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

JOHNNY SAINT</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">This may very well be the biggest mismatch of the entire tournament. The much larger Gordy started this contest with an attempted lariat but Saint ducked and begin to kick “The Freebird” in the leg to try and chop him down. A takedown attempt by Saint was thwarted and Gordy began the onslaught of punches and strikes. Saint, luckily for his health, dropped down after taking a few strikes to the noggin’ and managed to bring Gordy to the mat. After catching a right hand, Saint applied the arm lock for the tap out victory.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> JOHNNY SAINT</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Time:<b> 4:59</b></span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 51</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

DAN SEVERN</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Two very experienced mat technicians took this match to the ground immediately, trading the momentum back and forth. Regal locked in a knee bar, but Severn fought out of it and jockeyed for position. Regal went for another leg submission, but Severn landed a few punches to break Steven’s grasp. Severn grabbed the arm and managed to lock in his patented arm bar to earn the tap out victory.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER: </b>DAN SEVERN</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 4:04</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 53</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

JOE MALENKO</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">This brother versus brother contest was highly engaging from the start, as both men shook hands after the opening bell to signal the respect they have for one another. Only one could advance to potentially become the first Ultimate Fighter. The Malenko brothers started the match, surprisingly, with kicks and strikes but it soon went to the mat. Dean had an answer to everything his older brother tried to do and managed to sway a kick counter in a beautiful Cloverleaf. With no other option, Joe was forced to tap out to crown his younger brother the victor.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER: </b>DEAN MALENKO</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 3:17</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 53</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">What a win for Dean Malenko as he advances to face Dan Severn in the semi-finals! The action continues in just a bit but I would like to take some time to thank all of you for checking out The Ultimate Fighting Championship. While other places are too busy trying to be living cartoons with face paint and bullshit, we are as real as it gets in professional wrestling. And tonight we will crown the first-ever Ultimate Fighter – the best of the best when it comes to stepping inside that ring. Will it be Ken Shamrock? How bout Johnny Saint? Or it could be Dan Severn or Dean Malenko? Let’s find out, back down to ringside.</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:center;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>== THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 1 SEMI-FINALS ==</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

<div style="text-align:center;"><b><img style="font-size:10pt;max-width:100%;" alt="" src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/syK6k1A.png?1" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/syK6k1A.png?1"</a>><span style="font-size:10pt;"> </span><img style="font-size:10pt;max-width:100%;" alt="" src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/AFX0gcf.png?1" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/AFX0gcf.png?1"></b></div></div><div</a> style="text-align:center;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>JOHNNY SAINT VS. KEN SHAMROCK</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">Age definitely played a huge factor in this one as England’s Johnny Saint was very fatigued ahead of this match with “The Dangerous” Ken Shamrock. Shamrock knocked Saint down with a high kick after the opening bell. Saint tried to recover and escaped a few submission attempts from Shamrock. After a few stomps from Shamrock followed by a German Suplex that knocked Saint loopy, Shamrock locked in the Ankle Lock but the elder statesman of UFC refused to submit. Shamrock had no choice but to break Saint’s ankle right then and there to force the referee to call for the bell.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> KEN SHAMROCK</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time: </b>1:36</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 37</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

<div style="text-align:center;"><b><img alt="" style="font-size:10pt;max-width:100%;" src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/mD2yQAD.png?1" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/mD2yQAD.png?1"</a>><span style="font-size:10pt;"> </span><img style="font-size:10pt;max-width:100%;" alt="" src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/Q4cuBqC.png?1" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/Q4cuBqC.png?1"</a>></b></div></div><div style="text-align:center;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>DAN SEVERN VS. DEAN MALENKO</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">If the night full of matches is anything to go by, these two are two of the best mat technicians in the Ultimate Fighting Championship series. Dan Severn did have the weight advantage over the smaller Dean Malenko, but Malenko is not somebody who is afraid of a challenge. There was no stand-up in this one, as both men looked to gain the advantage on the mat. Severn couldn’t use his size against the craftier Malenko, who nearly had the match won with a beautiful rear naked choke that almost faded Severn. “The Beast” fought through the pain of the submission and used some strong style knees to his advantage. Severn locked in the arm bar soon thereafter to get another tap out victory.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER: </b>DAN SEVERN</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 4:01</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 53</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">AND IT IS ALL OVER! Severn moves on and will fight “The Dangerous” Ken Shamrock in just a few minutes to crown the first-ever Ultimate Fighter! In order to give both fighters a chance to prepare with their corners for the crowning bout, let’s take a look back at their paths to this huge matchup. Ken Shamrock started this tournament with a win over Japan’s Yoshihiro Takayama, followed by a win over Takayama’s fellow countryman Akira Maeda. He then broke Johnny Saint’s arm to advance to the finals. Dan Severn on the other hand finished Canada’s Ron Garvin to start, then he submitted England’s Steven Regal. He just beat Dean Malenko to secure his spot in the final. This next match will show who just is the baddest man in pro wrestling. Who is the Ultimate Fighter?</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:center;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>== THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 1 FINALS ==</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

KEN SHAMROCK</b></span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">This is the biggest match of the night. Either Dan Severn or Ken Shamrock will walk out of the Silver Nugget Casino as the Ultimate Fighter. Shamrock and Severn stood face to face after the opening bell, neither one intimidated by the other competitor. Shamrock looked to get the upperhand with an instant short headbutt that not only rocked “The Beast”, it angered him. Severn retaliated with a double leg takedown and began beating down on Shamrock with wild lefts and rights. Shamrock escapes and regroups himself in the middle of the ring, taunting Severn to meet him in a stand-up strike contest. The fight continues with both men trading strikes, but Shamrock took down the mustachioed marksman with an ugly German Suplex. Shamrock tried to get the Ankle Lock, but Severn rolled through and locked Ken in a Cloverleaf. The ripped Shamrock powered out and kicked Severn right in the head as the two continued to duke it out with rights and lefts. Shamrock connected with a throw to put Severn on the mat and grabbed the Ankle once more, nearly snapping it (much like he did to Saint) before Severn had no choice but to tap out!</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>WINNER:</b> KEN SHAMROCK</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Time:</b> 9:27</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:10pt;"><b>Segment Rating:</b> 39</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>

</div><div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">SHAMROCK DOES IT! SHAMROCK IS THE FIRST ULTIMATE FIGHTER! Ken Shamrock beat four of the toughest wrestlers from around the world to earn the title of being “The World’s Most Dangerous Man”! Ken Shamrock has cemented his place in history here in the Silver Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ken Shamrock is the Ultimate Fighter and is virtually unstoppable! This has been Eric Bischoff and I want to say thank you for joining me tonight as we saw the coronation of Ken Shamrock on top of the mountain known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"></p><p>
