Franklin Rush

He had never been great at anything. Always good. He was a good athlete. He was good enough to be in the rotation on his high school basketball team. He was good enough to get playing time on the football team -- but never good enough to be a starter. Or a star. He was a good student, but not great. He didn’t stand out academically. He didn’t stand out socially. He was well-liked, but was not the most popular kid in school. He didn’t mind -- it had been a good life. Not a great life, but a good life.

He enrolled in wrestling school while going to college. He wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to study. He had not declared a major yet. He was thinking business, it seemed like the most realistic major to live a good life if he didn’t make it in wrestling. In the Rocky Mountain School of Wrestling, he was not the standout student. He was the second graduate -- after Jakob Yoder. Yoder was the stand out. Yoder had everyone talking. He was six feet ten inches. He was over three hundred and fifty pounds and could move like a man Franklin’s size. Franklin was okay with that. He was a good wrestler. He took training seriously. He knew he was going to be used.

When he graduated at the end of ‘16, he was finishing his first semester at college. He made his pro debut shortly after and was just a guy occasionally on the card. Jakob had already left for RIPW and looked destined for superstardom. Jared, that jerk, was coming out of the dojo shortly after. Clyde was looking like he would come soon after -- and looked like the heir-apparent. Another 6’10, 300+ athlete who could really move. Franklin looked like he was destined to be good, but to not be great.

Then he kicked it up a notch. He started working harder. It helped when Joel Bryant got signed. Joel took Franklin under his wing. Became his mentor. Sure, Robert had taught him how to wrestle. He liked Robert, they got along. He was the coach. Joel became his mentor though. Would sit with him before shows and help him. Teach him psychology -- and Franklin took to it. He listened. He put it in practice. He wasn’t Clyde Puder or Keith Holly. He didn’t have their size so he didn’t draw their attention, but he was good. More than good enough, he was good. He was main roster good. He was quality-heel-who-should-get-pushed good. He didn’t have the overness of a Casey Valentine or Cameron Vessey or Primus Allen. He knew why they were at the top of the card. He knew that he had to bide his time and work his way up to their level. He’d only been a pro for two years, but he had come a long way. A really long way.

He had adopted the moniquer “Flawless” because he truly believed he did not have any weaknesses as a wrestler. He believed that he was, in fact, flawless, as a wrestler. He could brawl, he could fly a little, he could wrestle on the mat, he could cut a promo, he understood how to put together a match. It was only a matter of time. Clyde Puder was destined to be the face of the company -- he knew that, but Franklin could be the top working heel. He could contrast Keith and the Devil’s Rejects by being just the best wrestler that he could possibly be. His whole life he had just been good, but here… in the eighteen by eighteen square of metal and wood and carpet and canvas -- he could be great. He could be flawless.

Louis Tully

Louis Tully should be dead. That’s not hyperbole. He should be. He was born with a heart defect. Doctors did not think he’d live past the age of ten. He did. He also grew big and strong, but the fact that he was supposed to be dead never stopped weighing on him. He lived a life he was not proud of. His teenage years were spent running from squad cars, running with people he shouldn’t have, and having two children before he was seventeen. Needless to say, he was not on the path his mother wanted him to be on. She yelled at him. It didn’t matter. She cried. It didn’t matter. She begged. It didn’t matter. He was who he was -- that’s how he reasoned it to himself. He was a product of his environment. He was from south-central Los Angeles. From the Watts neighborhood. Where you were either a red, a purple, a blue, or a black and gold. Those were your colors. You didn’t want to be colorless.

Louis had rocked the purple. He was Grape Street. Jordan Downs. He repped with pride. Dickies with a heavy sag. Purple flag. He was the biggest so he had to be the baddest. They tattooed him. He dropped out of school. Then -- they came to his house. Lowriders with the top down. Black and gold. Hanging out the side. They shot up the small house his mother had worked her butt off at three jobs to afford. He wasn’t home. They didn’t know that. Or they did. Either way, they didn’t care. His mom was home though. His own lady of Guadalupe. And she was gone. Gone because he made decisions that ended up ending her life. He cried for the first time in years when he came home to the police tape. When he couldn’t go in his house. When she was being wheeled out.

He knew he needed to make a change -- so he moved to Denver to live with his abuelita who had relocated there. His abuelita. His mother’s mom. She was so disappointed in him. She had told him that his nonsense wouldn’t fly in her house. He had to shape up. Had to get a job. His GED. It was there that he saw an AD in the paper for Rocky Mountain School of Wrestling.

He had never been a big pro wrestling fan. His abuelita loved lucha libre -- and he knew enough to get by. He know El Patron. El Mitico. Senior Lucha. Louis Montero. He knew OLLIE. The People’s Promotion. His abuelita had watched OLLIE religiously before she moved. She had learned to use the computer so she could watch SOTBW. El Leon. Axxis Jr. Champagne Lover. Lucha libre was second only to her catholicism. He knew that. He knew he could make her proud.

He was too big to be a proper lucha. Was not the athlete that required either. He was tough though. Tough as nails. Had been shot in the shoulder when he was fifteen and never went to the hospital. Just let his vato pull it out with a pair of pliers and then burn it closed. So he enrolled. He was going to make his abuelito proud. He was going to make his mother proud -- whereever she was. He was still rough around the edges. Swore too much. Was too quick to want to throw punches when he felt offended. But, professional wrestling was supposed to be the domain of tough men who didn’t fit into society. That was him. He was Hell’s Angel -- and this was his shot at redemption.

We had done it. We had officially made it to regional -- and with big gains. We had been making steady improvements. Steadily gaining popularity and prestige. We were getting rave reviews. Our Third Anniversary show tour the house down. Bryan Vessey came in and helped make Logan look like a stud. It was our fiftieth show. I was incredibly proud of where we came from. We had started running a non-descript high school gymnasium. Seventy-six people had been at our first show. Now we were steadily doing 500 -- and could have been doing more.

We could have been running bigger buildings than the Oxford Arena for awhile, but I wanted to stay close to home. Now, it was time to branch out a little bit. I was going to try to renovate the Oxford Arena, or find a bigger property we could run out of, but with our television coverage covering all of the Rocky Mountains, it was probably a good time to hit some other venues and see what else was out there.

RMW Live #13 would also be KC Glenn’s farewell. He was going back to Burning Hammer for almost thirty-thousand dollars a month. That was big money. Three hundred sixty thousand dollars a year. He was going to live a comfortable life. He was a good wrestler. A good talent. Even more, he had made Marjorie happy. That was the past though. Marjorie was sad, but she was not letting it stop her from being productive. She was showing up to work. She was doing her job with maybe increased precision and focus. Choosing her work as the outlet for her frustration and sadness. I was here if she needed me, but she rarely needed me anymore. Rarely.

I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair while double checking the final card for #13 before sending it to the printers.

RMW Live #13

Saturday, Week 2, February, 2019

Live from Washington State Gymnasium, 7:30 PM Bell Time

Also Aired On Demand on the Rocky Mountain Sports Network

Main Event

RMW Can-Am Championship

Sixty Minute Time Limit

KC Glenn versus “The Hillbilly Hammer” Clyde Puder ©

Semi Main Event

Grudge Match

Eight Man Tag

Thirty Minute Time Limit

The House of Stone versus The Devil’s Rejects

Singles Match

Twenty-Five Minute Time Limit

Elemental IV versus Charger Siaki w/Streetz

Singles Match

Twenty-Five Minute Time Limit

“Blue Collar” Ray Badell versus “Flawless” Franklin Rush

Singles Match

Twenty-Five Minute Time Limit

Juan Soler versus “Relentless” Wesley Browning

Opening Match

Tag Team Match

The Puerto Rican Exchange [bradley & Veder] versus Samoan Demolition w/ Streetz

I had finished the narratives I wanted to write sooner than I imagined. RMW Live 13 had been a success. It was our first show outside of the Oxford Arena in years. We had booked a multi-show, multi-month deal with the Washington State Gymnasium, so we were headed back there for No Law or Order 4. We had said goodbye to KC after the last show. There was definitely some tension in the locker room. Everyone understood it why he left, but it was considered poor form to leave where you were dating the bosses daughter. When McFly left North of the Border a couple of years ago, it was because he and Victoria had split up so he got out of dodge.

Our train was rolling though. We were building up steam and progressing now that we were at regional. I was excited for No Law or Order 4. Frantic Ali, who had made his debut for us in January was another main event heel presence -- would be main eventing this show. I was excited to see what he could produce for us. He was an experienced brawler who had been killing the Southwest scene for quite some time and now he could do the same for us.

Diaz retains, but good to see Ali here. He's one of the few IPW guys I always want to steal when playing as GSW

Hey Historian, just wanted to say that I'm loving this. You are pumping out so many shows it's hard to keep up, but you have a great balance between quick, easy to digest shows and compelling backstage/character pieces. You're pushing me towards turning my long-term game into a dynasty on here. I think you've found your "sweet spot" and I look forward to seeing how far RMW can go!

Diaz has been slowly groomed and nurtured by you for years now, and hasn't lost cleanly yet (if I remember correctly). His first "loss" will probably not be clean and will be against the guy who steps up to have a big time feud with him, maybe Clyde Puder or Riley McManus?

A four way match gives you a chance to get The Ring Generals out of your Tag division (which seems to be the secondary division to the COTT tag titles) and lets you use your tag titles in midcard feuds.
