For immediate release. TIER-1 is coming to the Shizuoka Sports Hall for the third instalment of the Fight Night series. The nascent company has made a lot of waves with its first two shows and looks to continue their positive momentum with their third. The company has made two new additions to their Lightweight division. They have signed British-based grappler Edison Silva. The nineteen year old has competed for a year with Britain's 21CW and brings a varied combat sports background to the table. He's joined by Japanese wrestler Motoyuki Miyake on the TIER-1 roster.

Fight Night 3 sees Marat Khoklov attempt to make his first successful defense of the World's Heavyweight Champion as he defends against legendary wrestler and fighter Buddy Garner in Buddy's return to the sport.

Overview:

The Russian giant Marat Khoklov is undoubtedly the most physically intimidating wrestler of all time, a man whose size, freakish power, and ripped physique redefine the term "monster heel". He first became famous when he knocked out the legendary Tadiyuki Kikkawa in a star-making victory that made him an overnight cultural mega-star in Japan. From there he headed to SWF, snagging a massively lucrative contract, and had seven good years. He quit SWF in 2015 in order to sign a one-match deal with BHOTWG for an astronomical sum of money - the match saw him lose to Kikkawa but set a new attendance record for the promotion in the process. He hasn't been seen since that match and it was only with the formation of TIER-1 that the giant announced he would be returning to professional wrestling. With his massive hands, his knockout power is something to be feared.

In his first match in TIER-1, Marat knocked out legendary grappler Raul Hughes to become the first ever TIER-1 World Heavyweight Champion.

Overview:

Jiu-Jitsu master Buddy Garner was formerly a highly successful MMA star, a big name in both America and Japan, who was renowned for his submission game. He made the conversion to pro wrestling in 1999 and soon became a huge name in the sport thanks to his work with PGHW, the highlight of his career being capturing the Glory Crown. In 2004, he took over a year out of his career to look after his new-born son. Garner returned to action in September 2005, and was the subject of a bidding war between PGHW and their bitter rivals BHOTWG. He chose to stay loyal and signed a contract to return to PGHW. He remained a huge draw for them all the way up to late 2008, when he again decided to go on hiatus, this time following the birth of his daughter. He has been AWOL ever since, and may well be retired...

Or at least that was the thought until Buddy agreed to return to wrestling for TIER-1.

Update:

I should have the show up in the next couple of days. Physical and mental health has been on a downward trend -- it's coming back up (physical better than mental, but mental is on the upswing). Combine that with some writing projects that have come on to the table and it just means my free writing time for diaries is going to be reduced. They'll still be active and all that, I just wanted to give you guys a quick update!

 • The Chinese Olympian and the British standout had a very classic catch-as-catch-can battle. Not a lot of strikes in this one.
 • Bingci locked on a Choke Hold that Robinson tried his best to get out of, but he couldn’t get free of the two-medal winning Bingci’s hold and had to submit.

In a decent match, Li Bingci defeated Billy Robinson in 16:45 by submission with a Choke Hold.

After a few weeks off to get some things right physically and mentally -- we are back in the saddle again. It will still be a somewhat slower production schedule than readers of The Climb are used to -- just from a life stand point. I am several shows ahead (those who know me know that I stay a few shows ahead as it helps my narrative process) so hopefully, I'll be able to get back to a somewhat regular posting schedule.

Danjuro Kikuchi (1-0-0) versus Kenichi Komagata (0-0-0)

 • Komagata was making his first appearance in TIER-1 and Danjuro Kikuchi was looking for his second victory. A second victory could propel Kikuchi at least into conversation about having a title opportunity.
 • This was fast and furious. A heavy striking affair. Neither did anything particularly impressive, but both laid it in.
 • Kikuchi hit a Muay-Thai knee and it dropped Komagata for a pinfall.

In a decent match, Danjuro Kikuchi defeated Kenichi Komagata in 6:40 by pinfall.

Sterling Whitlock (0-0-0) versus Tornado Nagi (0-0-0)

 • Sterling Whitlock and Tornado Nagi were both making their debuts here. Whitlock, the protege of famed wrestler Alexander Robinson, was coming over with a lot of fanfare and hype. Nagai is an experienced veteran who did a tour of duty in INSPIRE and rumor has it has already been offered a contract from Burning Hammer of the Wrestling Gods -- so this could be his only appearance in TIER-1.
 • Whitlock showed a lot of Alexander Robinson in his style. He controlled the match. It was clear that Nagai, the veteran, was trying to make sure that the youngster was established with the crowd.
 • Nagai did hit some huge, explosive suplexes and after each one Whitlock kicked out. Whitlock hit the Whitlock’s End and got his first win in TIER-1.

In a decent match, Sterling Whitlock defeated Tornado Nagai in 9:09 by pinfall with a Whitlock's End.

Pavel Vanzycha (1-0-0) versus "The Dog of War" Kimitada Yanagita (0-1-0)

 • The Polish grappler Pavel Vanzycha and the experienced, hard-nosed veteran Kimitada Yanagita came to the ring looking for a fight. Yanagita is short and stocky and mean looking and pummeled Pavel early on.
 • Pavel was the superior technician though, and was able to consistently counter the strikes into holds and attempted submission attempts.
 • Yanagita was able to fight out of each submission attempt, until Vanzycha rolled him through and locked in a Cross Armlock that Yanagita couldn’t escape and resulted in a submission.

In a decent match, Pavel Vanzycha defeated Kimitada Yanagita in 10:46 by submission with a Cross Armlock.

"Rubber" Christopher Ball (0-0-0) versus Curtis Jenkins (0-1-0)

 • Former professional Mixed Martial Artist Christopher Ball was making his debut here against the British technician Curtis Jenkins.
 • Jenkins tried to come out of the gate with some submission wrestling but Ball was there and ready and launched a flurry of strikes.
 • That was the story of this match. Jenkins wanted to wrestle and Ball kept hitting him with a barrage of strikes until a right hand caught Jenkins flush and that was it.

In a bout that had terrible wrestling and non-existent crowd heat, Christopher Ball defeated Curtis Jenkins by knock out in five minutes.

Morimasa Kato (0-1-0) versus Hitomaro Suzuki (0-1-0)

 • Kato and Suzuki are both touted members of the heavyweight division that stumbled in their first contests. They’re well liked by the fans and really exude fighting spirit.
 • This was a very hard-hitting contest. Lots of brutal strikes. Both men were covered in welts by the end of it.
 • Neither man was willing to back down from the other which helped get the crowd excited.
 • Several big suplexes led to near falls for each man. Suzuki went for a Back Drop Driver, but Kato flipped over and went right into the Choke Sleeper. Suzuki tried to fight it off but was unable to do so and had to submit.

In a decent match, Morimasa Kato defeated Hitomaro Suzuki in 17:34 by submission with a Choke Sleeper.

"The Demolition Expert" Raul Hughes (0-1-0) versus "Killer" Carl Clarkson (0-0-0)

 • Raul Hughes was making his return here from his loss to Marat Khoklov. Clarkson was making his debut in Japan. The big man was a product of the TITAN Factory and had a lot of potential.
 • While Clarkson is a virtual unknown, the crowd was very excited to see Hughes back in action. The monster-of-a-man is incredibly popular and the people reacted to everything.
 • Clarkson came out of the gate like a man possessed. He wanted to end the fight early. The former pro hockey player showed his enforcer roots -- and why they call him Killer -- when he launched several big strikes.
 • Hughes countered a right hand with a left hand of his own and the Demolition Expert found the trigger as Clarkson slumped to the mat and it was called a knock out.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Raul Hughes defeated Carl Clarkson in 7:26 when Carl Clarkson was knocked out.

Spyder Yakuta (1-0-0) versus Tsuneyo Yanagimoto (1-0-0)

 • Two undefeated lightweights who could both potentially challenge the winner of the main event. They had a very fast-paced, hard-hitting contest.
 • It was clear throughout the match that Yanagimoto is a star in the making. He was able to get the crowd really behind him.
 • This was definitely a modern Junior match -- one of the styles that TIER-1 and parent company ALPHA-1 advertised would be a hallmark of their style.
 • Yanagimoto hit a big Mikado Bomb and got the three count.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Tsuneyo Yanagimoto defeated Spyder Yakuta in 12:47 by pinfall with a Mikado Bomb.

Mohamed El Yaaggoudi (1-0-0) versus "The Tap Out Artist" Billy Russell (1-0-0) ©

 • The main event of the evening pit the Morrocan kickboxer against the Puerto Rican grappler in what was sure to be an interesting clash of styles. The sold-out crowd was very into everything these two men did.
 • El Yaaggoudi came out of the gate firing big strikes off that rocked Russell. It looked like Russell was rocked early on, but he managed to survive the early onslaught.
 • Russell managed to grab some holds and work El Yaaggoudi down. Russell kept looking for submission holds.
 • After El Yaaggoudi went for a big head kick and Russell ducked and hit a big release German Suplex that he spun into a Twisting Arm Lock that got the submission.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Billy Russell defeated Mohamed El Yaaggoudi in 13:34 by submission with a Twisting Arm Lock.

For Immediate Release to the Press - TIER-1 has announced a special tournament happening in the second week of May. In an effort to continue to provide the best action anywhere in the world, TIER-1 will be holding a one-night tournament. An Openweight Grand Prix. The winner of the Grand Prix will get to challenge for their respective division's World Championship. The tournament will be the only time this year that weight divisions will intermingle and not be enforced. As a result, the results of these matches will not have any bearing on an individuals ranking or record -- as they are catch-weight fights.

Eight men -- four heavyweights and for lighweights -- will enter the one night tournament. Who will survive? Who will host the trophy at the end of the night? The only way to find out is to be there live at the Shimonoseki Hall.

Razan Okamoto versus “The Master of the Armlock” Sotatsu Sarumara

Okamoto and Sarumara started off slow. They had the distinction of being the first Openweight match in TIER-1’s five month history and they did not go balls to the wall.
Saurmara spent the match trying to lock in an armlock. The man known as the “Master of the Armlock” was trying to live up to his name, but Okamoto’s speed kept him from getting into danger.
Okamoto, who went to two Maeda Grand Prix Finals that he lost before winning in his third attempt, looked incredibly poised. Being a junior heavyweight that has competed in the heavyweight-heavy BCG, he has gotten used to being the significantly smaller man.
Okamoto did not back down from anything Sarumara threw at him and the fans were really behind him. Okamoto is turning into a real star in Japan.
Sarumara got a hold of Okamoto’s arm at one point, but Okamoto countered it into a Brainbuster Suplex that got the three count and got Okamoto into the next round of the tournament.

In a good match, Razan Okamoto defeated Sotatsu Sarumara in 11:38 by pinfall with a Brainbuster Suplex.

Sharaku Okimasa vs. Mushashi

 • The experienced Okimasa, representing the heavyweight division, was up against the EXO2010 standout, Mushashi here. Mushashi, of course, was representing the Junior Heavyweight Divison.
 • Mushashi started off with some incredible leg kicks to Okimasa. He was trying to take the base out of the heavyweight. Unlike Okamoto, Mushashi’s career has been primarily in EXO2010 against other Junior Heavyweights and at only 5’7”, Mushashi gave up a lot of size to Okimasa.
 • Mushashi struck fast with lethal precision to the legs and it clearly had an effect on how Okimasa moved around the ring.
 • Mushashi went for a quick running drop kick, but Okimasa caught him with a big spinning powerslam.
 • Okimasa took control of the match and after several big slams he was able to put Musashi away.

In a decent match, Sharaku Okimasa defeated Musashi in 6:38 by pinfall.

Edison Silva versus Haruhiro Tsumemasa

 • Both men were making their official in-ring debuts for TIER-1 in this Openweight Contest. Silva is the MMA-influenced British grappler that is in his second year as a pro. Tsumemasa is one of those guys who has floated around the puro scene and is hoping that TIER-1 will be his launching point.
 • This was not a very good match. Silva looked tenative in his first outing in Japan and Tsumemasa showed the lack of conditioning that showcased why PGHW did not pick him up full-time years ago when he was in their youth ranks.
 • Silva, the junior heavyweight in this, hit several big knee strikes and locked in a standing guillotine to get the submission win.

In a poor match, Edison Silva defeated Haruhiro Tsumemasa in 8:58 by submission.

Nigel Svensson versus Kinji Akamatsu

 • In the final opening round contest, the Swedish Nigel Svensson was up against Akamatsu. Svensson, a product of The Snake Pit, has been making waves in Japan since joining SAISHO and then Tier-1. Akamatsu is also a member of the SAISHO roster -- and is known for his knee strikes.
 • The crowd was quiet for most of this match, but both men worked very hard. Akamatsu came with lots of knee-based attacks and Svensson kept looking to lock in painful submission holds.
 • Svensson clearly weathered a storm from Akamatsu and managed to get ahold of an arm and work him down to the ground. It took a little bit, but he got in the Hyper Extension Arm Lock and Akamatsu was forced to surrender.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Nigel Svensson defeated Kinji Akamatsu in 18:08 by submission with a Hyper Extension Arm Lock.

Razan Okamoto versus Sharaku Okimasa

 • The first of two semifinal match ups. Okamoto and Okimasa, both BCG mainstays who are familiar with each other. Okimasa was favoring his legs from his battle with Mushashi -- which while not long was incredibly painful. Okamoto was showing the effects of his previous battle but was moving with much more energy.
 • The crowd was really into both of these men. Okimasa moved slowly and helped tell the story of being a wounded warrior still fighting for pride. Okamoto brought the fight to Okimasa and it was good action.
 • Okimasa hit a headbutt that knocked Okamoto silly and almost caused the fight to be stopped, but Okamoto roared back with a big elbow strike and then a Brainbuster Suplex to secure the victory and a spot in the finals.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Razan Okamoto defeated Sharaku Okimasa in 10:43 by pinfall with a Brainbuster Suplex.

Nigel Svensson versus Edison Silva

 • Two European grapplers were in the contest here. Svensson, the Swedish Heavyweight, had the longest first-round match up and had a body covered in welts. Silva, the British Junior Heavyweight, was fresher but did take a lot of knee strikes in his first round contest.
 • This was a grapple-heavy match up. The crowd didn’t know how to feel about Silva, the newcomer to Japan, but the wrestling was good.
 • There were not a lot of strikes in this as each man looked for the submission.
 • Silva looked like he might catch Nigel several times, but the more experienced grappler worked his way out of each hold and ended up locking in the Hyper Extension Arm Lock and for the second time tonight, got a submission victory and a spot in the finals.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Nigel Svensson defeated Edison Silva in 9:52 by submission with a Hyper Extension Arm Lock.

Razan Okamoto versus Nigel Svensson

 • The final match of the tournament. Okamoto the Junior Heavyweight that had survived two big heavyweights that he put away with the Brainbuster Suplex and Nigel the Heavyweight who had submitted two Junior Heavyweights earlier in the night. Both men showed the effects of the wars they had been in to this point. Svensson was clearly the worse for wear, but Okamoto was anything but fresh.
 • This was a slower match than Okamoto usually delivered, but the all-around wrestler did deliver punishing strikes to Svensson.
 • Svensson refused to give up any ground and several times he used his size to wrestle Okamoto to the mat and look for some submission holds.
 • Okamoto refused to surrender and rolled through each submission attempt. Svensson countered one roll with a beautiful German Suplex that almost won him the match.
 • A second German led Nigel to going for the Hyper Extension Arm Lock, but Okamoto rolled through that and turned it into -- impressively so -- a Brainbuster Suplex that got him the three count and the win.

In a decent match, Razan Okamoto defeated Nigel Svensson in 17:52 by pinfall with a Brainbuster Suplex. Razan Okamoto wins the TIER-1 World Openweight Grand Prix title.
