Diamonds Are Forever: A Jim Crockett Promotions Diary by Pipers Pit & Kimberly

It’s January 1985 although it’s not the 1985 you remember. The world of Professional Wrestling is about to change….but we’re not talking about Vince McMahon’s pipedream of the event to end all events. Further south Jim Crockett Promotions has seized control of the National Wrestling Alliance and has restored the balance on WTBS by purchasing the Saturday night timeslot from the WWF. Gone is Mid-Atlantic Wrestling and in its place, World Championship Wrestling at 6:05 every Saturday Night.

 

Crockett also made some executive decisions such as ending the NWA Six-Man Tag Team and Junior Heavyweight Championships. Controlling the Alliance means he has access to a wealth of talent to ride out McMahon’s whims of glory. But deep down Crockett wants to rule the wrestling world the same as his northern counterpart. While the future of the business is in doubt, one thing is for certain.

Hart is a youngster with a boatload of potential but the veteran Koloff mauls him for the very short match before putting him away after a running knee to the back.

American Starship are two young handsome guys with a great look. The Malenkos...yea American Starship dominates and wins with a big powerslam from Starship Coyote.

The former Junior Heavyweight Champion Brown is fighting out of his weight class with no pun intended. The veteran McDaniel pounds on him from the opening bell and lights him up with painful looking chops before putting him away with a big overhand chop to the head.

Blanchard puts himself over as the greatest wrestler in the world and makes sure the camera has a clear shot of his championship belt. He does say he feels like something is missing from getting to that top rung of the ladder, that rarified air of people like Ric Flair and he thinks he knows what it is. Schiovane presses him to reveal it but Blanchard rebukes him and says the world will find out very very soon.

 

 

 

 

After the break Tony and David are met by Paul Jones. Jones brags about what his men, the Barbarian and the Superstar did to Tommy Rich and it was so much fun they want to do it again. So they’re coming to Baltimore in two weeks and if Rich has any guts he’ll find a partner and get beaten up all over again!

 

 

 

Magnum T.A. vs Dory Funk Jr.

 

Dory Funk Jr is one of the best of all time and it still shows as he makes Magnum look his age but when Magnum turns it on and takes control the crowd eats it up and he pins the former World Champion with a belly to belly suplex.
