Tony Schiavone and David Crockett welcome us to the show and hype last week’s huge announcement of the live TBS special in three weeks. They then go onto hype this week’s show especially the appearance by Magnum T.A. and later the NWA World Tag Team Champions Dusty Rhodes and the Raging Bull Manny Fernandez.

 

 

 

Dick Slater vs Dutch Mantell

 

Both men get in about an equal share of offense but Mantell builds some momentum near the end and wins the match with a backbreaker and the aid of a foot on the second rope.

Rick Rude comes out to the interview desk and says the women out there have waited long enough. It’s far past time for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to be around the waist of the sexiest man in professional wrestling and if Ric Flair has any guts in that average looking body he’ll accept his challenge! Rude poses for the women in the audience, slowly gyrating his hips to Schiavone’s dismay as he throws it to a break.

 

 

 

 

After the break David Crockett welcomes Magnum T.A. to the set. Magnum says that since people seem to want to issue challenges today he’s going to throw out one of his own. Wahoo McDaniel may have cheated his way to escape with that United States title a few months ago but it's time to pay the piper. Magnum says he’ll be at the TBS event in three weeks and he’s calling out McDaniel. If he’s such a fighting champion and such a tough guy he’ll put that belt on the line that night!

 

 

 

 

Magnum T.A. vs Robert Fuller

 

Fuller, using a dirty trick to start the match controls the action but Magnum feeds off the audience’s energy and makes his comeback, catching Fuller with a belly to belly suplex for the win.

Evenly matched but Taylor pulls away late and hits a dropkick off the second rope for the win.

David Crockett welcomes the NWA World Tag Team Champions Dusty Rhodes and the Raging Bull Manny Fernandez to the set. They don’t get far into their promo before they’re attacked from behind with chairs by Ole and Arn Anderson. The champions never see it coming and the Andersons split their attack between stomps and swinging the chairs. Crockett calls for help but it takes several moments for babyfaces like Ricky Steamboat and Tommy Rich to chase off the Andersons. Crockett tries to talk over the chaos and tells us to come back next week.

They then go onto hype this week’s show, especially the main event which will see the Andersons taking on the newly debuting Guererro brothers Mando and Chavo. Crockett recounts last week’s attack on the NWA World Tag Team Champions Dusty Rhodes and Manny Fernandez and says he’s not sure what to expect tonight.

Rich and Malenko put on a good match but the former NWA Champion is just too much on this night and he wins it with a piledriver.

David Crockett welcomes the NWA World Champion Ric Flair out to the interview area. He asks Flair directly about Rick Rude’s challenge last week. Flair is all smiles and he asks if he looks worried. He confirms he’s not and says he’s watched Rude for a few weeks and he’s got the body, he’s got the talent but he doesn’t have this (pointing to the belt). So this Thursday Rick Rude gets his shot at greatness but it’s going to be a long night if you think you’re taking this from the Nature Boy. Woooooooooo!

 

 

 

 

We’re shown pre-taped comments by Paul Jones. He’s ranting and raving about people being afraid of his men and how nobody will accept their challenge. Jones promises that they’ll be at the big TBS event next week and someone will have to accept!

 

 

 

Eddie Gilbert vs Dutch Mantell

 

Gilbert seems to always have the match within his grasp but Mantell uses several dirty tactics to steal the momentum and the victory when he drops Gilbert face first across the turnbuckle and uses a handful of tights in the pin attempt for the 123.

The NWA Television Champion Tully Blanchard and his Executive Director Bobby Heenan come out to the interview area. Blanchard is very smug and says that he was watching Tommy Rich earlier and asks Heenan if they’re going to have a problem on Thursday which gets a resounding no. Blanchard goes on to say that he needs to make sure it’s a quick match with Rich because he’s got some Atlanta ladies lined up for after.

The Andersons vs The Guererros

 

The Guererros make a good showing of themselves in the early minutes with smooth tags and legal double team maneuvers but as soon as Ole can take a shortcut he does and from there the Andersons bend every rule in the book to gain a victory.

The Andersons come out to the interview desk. Ole says he’s going to make this short and simple. “Rhodes...Fernandez…..last week you learned the hard way that your time on the top of the mountain is drawing to a close and next week on TBS those belts are coming to where they belong!” Schiavone thanks us for turning in and reminds us to tune in Thursday night right here on TBS!

Good show. Dutch Martell told the best stories his one about Kane saving his life in Puerto Rico was amazing. Martell was really hated by the crowd and cheated to win and headed to the back and someone threw something really heavy like a brick and knocked him senseless and Dutch went down and was getting mobbed, then a young Kane who was travelling with Dutch comes down the ramp throwing guys left and right and carries Dutch to the back like he was Fay Wray and Kane was King Kong. By his own admission most of his stories are embellished but it was clear He loves Kane.

Wahoo says he doesn’t deserve a thing and that starts with the champ’s time and leaves but when Magnum turns to talk to Caudle Wahoo rushes, or as fast as Wahoo can, and blasts Magnum with a forearm to the back. Wahoo throws Magnum into the ringpost as Caudle runs for the hills. But Wahoo isn’t done. He opens the bag and pulls out a brown leather strap. He rips Magnum’s black leather jacket off and begins to whip the younger man. Finally he wraps it around Magnum’s throat and hoists Magnum up using Wahoo’s own back as a lever, essentially hanging Magnum. Officials run down and eventually get Wahoo to let go. Finally the Dream makes the hot tag and Fernandez is a man possessed. He cleans house, settling on Arn and working him over. Referee Earl Hebner takes a bump and now its a four man brawl. The Andersons are sent from the ring but they use the opportunity to collect one of the tag belts from ringside and Ole clobbers Fernandez over the head with it. Blanchard is on the defense but he can’t even ditch to the outside to consult Heenan without Rich on his heels and it ends with a double noggin knocker before the action returns to the inside. But as Rich approaches Blanchard pokes him in the eye which draws a warning from referee Tommy Young but it’s enough for the Champion to take over. Blanchard uses all his technical skill and underhanded tactics to keep control but he can’t put Rich away. As Blanchard sets up for the slingshot suplex, Rich slips out over the top and dropkicks Blanchard through the ropes. Blanchard waves his hand at Heenan who runs over and grabs the Television Title and they head up the aisle as the referee counts. You have to take this title from Flair’s cold hands and can Rude do it? Ask Harley Race. Ask Dusty Rhodes. Ask them if Ric Flair can back it up. Tonight Rick Rude finds out the hard way. He throws Flair into a corner and begins targeting the champion’s neck to soften him up. Rude begins wearing down Flair with some grounded attacks but Flair won’t submit when asked. Rude whips him into the corner and charges but Flair moves and Rude hits chest first. Now it’s the champion on offense and he has his eyes on Rude’s left leg. The match continues as the ring announcer alerts the crowd there are five minutes left. The two men keep battling but Rude hits a dropkick and puts the Champion on the outside. Rude brutalizes him some more before putting him back in the ring. There’s now two minutes left and Rude is pressing the advantage but Flair keeps kicking out. Rude sets up Flair on the top and hits a superplex. He covers. 1...2….Flair kicks out! One minute left. Rude is suckered into a small package but he kicks out at two as well. Rude kicks Flair and winds him around hitting the Rude Awakening as the announcer begins the countdown from ten seconds. He picks up a ringside chair and bashes Flair over the back with it. Flair is trying to crawl and get to a safe distance but Rude is a wildman, picking up Flair and slamming him on the announcer’s ringside table which does not break. Rude looks around, and picks up the title belt. As Flair, in remarkable pain sits up, Rude runs at him and hits him in the face with the belt. Flair rolls off the table onto his face and Rude is wide eyed as officials come in and check on the champion. Tony Schiavone and David Crockett welcome us to the show and recap everything we’ve seen a few days ago at the Showdown in Atlanta. Crockett says they’re going to go to the ring where Rick Rude who attacked NWA World Champion Ric Flair will be in action.

 

 

Rick Rude vs Gene Petit

 

Rude dominates the match from the start looking very strong. He ends it with the Rude Awakening to noone’s surprise.

Rick Rude comes over to the interview area very smug. He says that live on TBS he proved two things. First and foremost he is the rightful NWA World Champion but second, Ric Flair is nowhere close to being the man Rick Rude is. He left the little nature boy on the floor and he probably will never return because if he does he knows he has to step in that ring again and next time, if it takes a hundred times, Rude says he’ll deliver a Rude Awakening until it breaks Flair’s neck!

 

 

 

 

Following the break Dusty Rhodes comes out to the interview area. He says that the Andersons are no good dirty dogs. They stole the NWA Tag Team titles. They didn’t win them. They didn’t do it with their guts because they have no guts. Ole, Arn, the American Dream and the Raging Bull don’t give up that easy and whether it’s a day, a week, a month, or a year they’ll be back in that ring and they will reclaim their titles.

 

 

 

Tully Blanchard © w/Bobby Heenan vs Don Kernodle

 

Blanchard takes control early on and even as Kernodle tries to make a comeback he snuffs it out with the help of a distraction by Heenan. Kernodle is finished with a slingshot suplex for the win.

After the match, Blanchard and Heenan come over to the interview area all smiles. They shrug off talk about losing by countout to Tommy Rich because Blanchard still has the NWA Television title and that’s what matters. Crockett tells him that may be true but he just received word that in two weeks Blanchard will defend that Television title against Tommy Rich again and to ensure he can’t walk away again it will be inside a steel cage. Blanchard and Heenan lose their minds saying how unfair it is and walk off still complaining.

 

 

 

Ricky Steamboat vs Dory Funk Jr.

 

A great match between two great workers. They trade the momentum a few times before Steamboat takes to the top rope and flies off with a cross body block for the win.

Schiavone and David Crockett discuss breaking news this week that NWA World Champion Ric Flair’s injury has caused a meeting of the NWA and next week NWA President Jim Crockett Jr will be here with an announcement.

The match lasts only a few moments. Koloff blasts Brown as soon as the match begins. Stunned, Brown is slung into the ropes and meets the business end of a Russian Sickle. Koloff pins him with a boot on the chest.

The new NWA Tag Team Champions, Ole and Arn Anderson, come out to the interview area very pleased with themselves. Ole says they heard Dusty Rhodes whining and crying last week but do they look afraid? If Dusty Rhodes wants another beating he can get one. Arn says it;s telling that Rhodes was out there alone because Manny Fernandez is a coward and doesn’t want any part of it and that may show that he’s actually got at least one brain cell!

 

 

 

The Rock n Roll Express vs The Malenkos

 

Great tag action, very fluid but Morton and Gibson have it going on and when they get rolling, no pun, they can’t be stopped. Joe Malenko falls victim of a double dropkick and that seals the deal.

Tony Schiavone says that as everyone saw Magnum T.A. was badly hurt by NWA United…..

 

 

Wahoo McDaniel walks out with a big broad grin. He says he couldn’t help but overhear and he wanted to front and center. Schiavone looks uncomfortable but says that thanks to the attack Magnum had to undergo emergency throat surgery and his return is uncertain. Wahoo bellows a laugh and says that’s doctor talk for never. He’s never coming back. Because he got in the way of the toughest man in professional wrestling! This belt belongs to him. It will always belong to him. So if you think about coming to take it, watch what happened to the handsome pup and think again!

 

 

 

The Barbarian w/Paul Jones vs Ron Garvin

 

Garvin puts up a fight and is a tough guy in his own right but the Barbarian shrugs it all off and following several power moves, finishes Garvin with a flying shoulder block off the second rope.

David Crockett brings out Randy Savage who as always looks slightly unhinged. Crockett asks about this mystery person Savage refers to but Savage waves his hand around and says he’a erasing says ‘Mr. TV Announcer” from existence because right now it’s only himself and the man behind the camera, yea, the man watching his eyes. Look into the eyes and tell yourself you’re safe. Tell yourself your past has not come back to haunt you. You can’t do it. They say the truth will set you free but for you my friend the truth is gonna hurt real bad!

 

Crockett can’t respond to that so he asks us to come back next week and if you’re going to be in Wheeling this Sunday night be sure to go to the Civic Arena for all the great action!

The Red Scare of JCP enters the ring and Ivan Koloff demands that everyone stand as the Soviet National Anthem begins to play. The crowd boos and even throws a few items into the ring as the Russians stand at attention.

 

 

 

Ivan Koloff w/Nikita Koloff and Khrusher Khruschev vs Sam Houston

 

Koloff uses his veteran knowledge and his ruthless tactics to keep the young Houston on the defense. When Houston begins to make a comeback Koloff distracts the referee allowing Nikita to attack Houston from behind with a backbreaker. Ivan jumps on the chance and ends the match with a side suplex.

Rock n’ Roll Express vs the Irwin Brothers

 

A good back and forth match which seems to be going the Irwins’ way but when Gibson gets the hot tag the momentum turns and the Rock n Roll Express takes control, finishing it off with a double dropkick to Scott Irwin for the win.

Gary Hart leads Kimala to the ring. The Ugandan Giant almost goes into the crowd but is refocused by Hart and brought into the ring.

Kimala charges Gilbert in the corner as soon as the bell rings but the youngster dodges and rocks the giant with a series of right hands. His luck runs out when he bounds off the ropes right into a standing side kick. It’s all Kimala after that and he gets the three count with a big splash.

Ricky Steamboat, Dusty Rhodes, and Manny Fernandez vs Wahoo McDaniel and the Andersons

 

The heels are in true form triple teaming Steamboat who is selling everything. Finally Dusty gets into the match and puts on a show, working for a long stretch against McDaniel. When Wahoo and Ole try and get involved behind the referee’s back Fernandez and Steamboat put an end to it and in the chaos, Rhodes nails Arn Anderson with a Bionic Elbow for the win.

As the ring announcer tells the crowd it’s time for intermission Rick Rude comes down and takes the

Microphone. After taunting the men in the audience and being swarmy for the ladies, he says he’s the reason Ric Flair is now going to retire and he’s the next NWA World Champion.

 

 

 

Randy Savage vs Ronnie Garvin

 

Two rugged guys slug this one out but when Garvin misses a charge into the corner and seems to injure his knee, Savage takes over with a vengeance. Garvin can barely get any offense in and Savage ends it with a tremendous elbow drop off the top rope for the win.

Dominating performance by Nikita and Khruschev. They use their strength to decimate both opponents and Nikita ends it with a Russian Sickle on Hart.

Steel Cage Match

Tully Blanchard © w/Bobby Heenan vs Tommy Rich

 

As soon as the cage door is locked Tommy Rich is out for blood and there’s plenty of blood to be had. Blanchard is thrown into the cage numerous times and is busted open. But the champion fights back and Rich is on the receiving end of the same punishment. They trade the momentum for over twenty minutes but eventually both men are standing in the middle of the ring at the end just throwing punches as the blood flows down their faces. Rich gets the better of the exchange but Blanchard kicks him low. With Rich doubled over, Blanchard hits the slingshot suplex and makes a loose cover for the win.

As soon as the bell rings Heenan is in the cage as quickly as he can with a towel and he leads his man out of the cage clutching the NWA Television title to his chest. The crowd is loudly booing and throwing things at the pair as they make their escape but once again Tully Blanchard has managed to hold onto his title.
