<strong>March, Week 3, 1990. </strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The show opened with a video package on the history between Ricky Steamboat and Jake Roberts, covering their successful tag team and ultimate break-up. “Can Ricky trust the Snake?!”</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 78</p><p> </p><p>

World Champion Hulk Hogan started the action with a warm-up match against Tito Santana. Hogan won easily. The announcers hyped tonight’s main event – a much more difficult warm-up for Steamboat as he faces Randy Savage. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 77</p><p> </p><p>

Before Hogan could exit, Steamboat appeared on stage with Roberts. Steamboat officially named Roberts as his third enforcer for WrestleMania. Hogan laughed it off. “You can have all the snakes you want outside the cage, brother! It won’t matter when you’re locked inside with these 24 inch pythons.”</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 100</p><p> </p><p>

Luna Vachon introduced her leather daddy The Warlord. He promised to crush Davey Boy Smith for her, so that Luna could break Tina Ferrari’s heart before she takes back her title. </p><p>

Athletic rookie Shane Douglas proved no match for the Warlord, eventually getting rag-dolled in a Full Nelson. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 48</p><p> </p><p>

Backstage, Harley Race and Paul Orndorff questioned Steamboat on his decision to trust Roberts. Ricky reminded his other two enforcers that they were once employed by Bobby Heenan. “People can change. I believe in Jake.” </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 87</p><p> </p><p>

In a back-and-forth match, the fun-loving Flamingos outfoxed Hammer & Hacksaw when Koko rolled-up Greg Valentine.</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 66</p><p> </p><p>

Adrian Adonis invited both members of the Hart Foundation into the Flower Shop. Adonis pointed out their recent losses as a team, Hart’s accidental elimination of Neidhart in the battle royal, and Neidhart not showing up to save Hart last week – clearly trying to stoke tensions. In response, Neidhart shoved Adonis over a flower cart, ripped away the Adorable One’s Intercontinental title, and handed it to Bret. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 80</p><p> </p><p>

In a hard fought contest, Harley Race defeated Razor Ramon with a piledriver. The tide turned in Harley’s favor after the Big Boss Man prevented Ramon from punching the old man with a gold chain wrapped fist. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 82</p><p> </p><p>

After the match, Ramon threw a tantrum at ringside and ranted about rentacops. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 75</p><p> </p><p>

In an even match, the Kings Club defeated Doom after Bob Orton pinned Ron Simmons. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 81</p><p> </p><p>

As soon as the Kings Club secured victory, Demolition slid into the ring and beat them down. </p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 81</p><p> </p><p>

In a brilliant match that had no place on TV, Ricky Steamboat defeated Randy Savage. During the match, Savage had Steamboat in position for the elbow drop. However, Jake Roberts arrived and menaced Ms. Elizabeth with Damien. Steamboat was unaware of this distraction, but nonetheless capitalized, besting Savage with a super-plex. </p><p>

PRIME TIME WRESTLING

March, Week 4, 1990.

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage stormed to the ring and demanded an apology for the actions of Jake Roberts in last week’s main event. “That’s just the kind of dude you are, Steamboat – a coward who has other people fight his battles.” The irony of Hogan complaining about outside interference isn’t lost on the fans.

Roberts eventually answered the two, focusing his promo on Savage, who he’ll be taking on at WrestleMania VI. “You must wake up every night in a cold sweat, thinking about what a lackey you’ve become.” Roberts promised that, after WrestleMania, Savage will have new nightmares, courtesy of The Snake.

Finally, Steamboat emerged. The challenger was actually contrite, sincerely apologizing to Elizabeth for Roberts’ behavior last week. He promised to beat Hogan clean at WrestleMania.

GRADE: 100

Davey Boy Smith defeated Jim Duggan with a running power slam.

GRADE: 81

After the match, the Warlord jumped Davey Boy and locked him in the full nelson. The powerhouse Bulldog was unable to break the hold. When Tina Ferrari tried to help pry him free, she was beaten down by Luna Vachon.

GRADE: 77

Doom defeated the makeshift team of Paul Roma and Shane Douglas. Simmons and Reed made quick work of the two, clearly still mad about last week’s loss to the Kings Club.

GRADE: 78

Tempting fate, the Flamingos arrived to bird-dance and then confront Doom about jumping them a few weeks ago. The Flamingos challenged Doom to a match at WrestleMania which Butch and Ron happily accepted. They smashed Koko’s confetti cannon on the way out.

GRADE: 74

The Kings Club defeated the Rougeaus in a one-sided warm-up match before their tag title shot at WrestleMania.

GRADE: 76

Demolition once again tried to jump the Kings Club, but this time Orton and Beefcake were ready. They splashed Ax and Smash with buckets of water they’d hidden under the ring and tried to wipe the paint off them. The tables turned, Demolition fled the scene.

GRADE: 80

In a non-title match, Adrian Adonis defeated Jim Neidhart with the Goodnight, Irene sleeper hold. Bret Hart watched from ringside.

GRADE: 83

After the match, a groggy Neidhart shoved the Hitman away when Bret tried to help him to the back.

GRADE: 66

The Big Boss Man arrived in the ring to present an arrest warrant for Razor Ramon for crimes against the squared circle. Ramon snuck into the ring from the crowd and pummeled Boss Man before tearing up the warrant. “Chico, you ain’t no law man, you’re an F.B.I. – a fat boy imposter.”

GRADE: 66

Emboldened by his beatdown of the Boss Man, Razor Ramon defeated Tito Santana in a match where Ramon broke multiple rules. “It’s too bad the ref didn’t get a warrant, Gorilla, there’s nothing he can do!”

GRADE: 80

In the main event between WrestleMania enforcers, Harley Race, Paul Orndorff, and Jake Roberts defeated Randy Savage, Nikita Koloff, and Honky Tonk Man. Roberts once again menaced Elizabeth with Damien, which opened the door for Harley Race to roll-up the Macho Man.

GRADE: 89

Steamboat came to the ring to scold his former partner. While they argued, Hogan slid into the ring with the world title and attempted to blindside Steamboat. At the last second, Roberts shoved Ricky out of the way and got leveled with the title instead. Steamboat proceeded to tear into Hogan with chops, eventually knocking the champion over the top rope.

We’re packing 96,000 people into a generic venue in Atlantic City, New Jersey for WrestleMania VI!

The pre-show began with a six-woman tag team match that saw Alundra Blayze and the Jumping Bomb Angels defeat the bad girl team of Dump Matsumoto, Judy Martin, and Susan Sexton. The WWF women’s division continued to languish -- but hey, at least the women’s title match is on the main card this year! I’m sure that’s a good sign…

GRADE: 59

Jim Duggan won the annual pre-show battle royal, last eliminating Tito Santana. After the match, the villainous Duggan mockingly HOOOO’d at the crowd, who apparently expected someone exciting to debut here.

The audience tuning in on PPV was treated to a video montage explaining the rules for tonight’s main event between Hulk Hogan and Ricky Steamboat. It’s a cage match with six enforcers at ringside. What could go wrong?

The show opened with a hard-hitting brawl between two powerhouses. The Warlord eventually gained the upper hand, tangling Davey Boy in the full nelson. Smith managed to work his way to the ropes and hook his leg through, but the Warlord refused to release the hold. The ref called for a DQ and the Warlord left the victorious Bulldog draped across the ropes.

Ricky Steamboat was warming up backstage when Andre the Giant appeared. The big man was still on crutches after the brutal attack by the Mega Powers. He wished Steamboat luck in tonight’s main event.

Harley Race and Paul Orndorff were able to outclass Honky Tonk Man in this tag team contest, but Koloff was another beast entirely. Once the Russian Nightmare got the tag, he dominated the good guys, and eventually flattened Race with a Russian Sickle for the victory.

In a match that saw the beefier Adonis in control for most of 20 minutes, Bret Hart eventually managed the comeback, cranking a Sharpshooter to get the submission. Bret Hart won the WWF Intercontinental title, his first singles honor in the company.

GRADE: 81

After the match, Jim Neidhart made to strap the title around Hart’s waist, but then blindsided him with a double ax-handle. As the crowd booed, Neidhart stood over Hart holding the Intercontinental title.

Accompanied by the Warlord, Vachon looked to be in control until Davey Boy Smith arrived to support Ferrari. The crowd wasn’t into this at all, apparently sick of seeing Vachon match up with Ferrari. The match mercifully ended with a Ferrari small package. Ferrari retained the WWF Women's title.

GRADE: 23

As the match concluded, Davey Boy leveled the Warlord with a massive lariat, then carried Ferrari to the back in celebration. Sexy I guess?

These two fought all over the ringside area in a no holds barred brawl. At one point, Ramon loaded up a right hand only for Boss Man to duck, causing Ramon to strike a fan. In the confusion, as Boss Man checked on the injured bystander, Ramon grabbed his opponent’s nightstick (not a metaphor) and KO’d him for the win.

Two tag teams at the height of their abilities wrestled a back-and-forth match. The Kings Club fought valiantly, but Demolition ultimately proved too lethal a tandem. Smash pinned Orton after a Decapitation. Demolition retained the WWF World Tag titles.

GRADE: 82

Randy Savage cut a wild promo on Jake Roberts. “You degraded Elizabeth yeah… you degraded the Mega Powers yeah… JAKE ROBERTS! You think I’m afraid to go to the dark side? I LIVE THERE EVERY DAY.” Is he referring to Hogan’s shadow? Unclear.

GRADE: 100

The crowd wasn’t entirely sure who to root for here, but the action was hot and heavy enough to get them into it. Savage came out strong, although Roberts seemed pleased to have gotten under his skin. When the fight spilled to the outside, Roberts caught Savage with a DDT on the entrance ramp. Busted open, Savage was never the same after that. Roberts seemed to toy with him, deploying multiple DDTs over the pleading cries of Ms. Elizabeth. Eventually, Roberts pinned an unconscious Savage, who needed to be stretchered from the ring.

GRADE: 88

Backstage, as Savage was loaded into an ambulance, Hulk Hogan desperately searched for a third enforcer. He approached Demolition and Razor Ramon, but after a year of Mega Power shenanigans, no one was interested in helping the Hulkster.

Doom flushed the Flamingos in the bathroom break match.

GRADE: 76

WQ4Erm8.jpgVSXsosTvy.jpg

The cage was assembled. The enforcers gathered at ringside. With Hogan’s side down a man, Roberts, Race, and Orndorff had no problem keeping Koloff and Honky in check. Still, Hogan was dominant inside the cage, battering Steamboat against the walls. He was perhaps a little too strong as fans primed for a Steamboat victory were let down by the level of offense given to Hogan. Eventually, Steamboat turned the tables and climbed the cage. Hogan pursued, but Jake Roberts hooked his boot, allowing Steamboat to leap to the outside. Ricky Steamboat won the WWF World Heavyweight title under sullied conditions that disappointed the fans. Blame somebody’s creative control clause.

GRADE: 88

OVERALL GRADE: 95 (a down year by WrestleMania standards)

Well at least Ricky has the title and off Hulk and that pesky creative control.

Interestingly, the AI has been handing out creative control clauses pretty freely. Hogan, Savage, Ricky, and Andre all have them. I had never seen a character use creative control to block a gimmick change until Ricky did it to me.

I am just happy the right man won

Sigh - Hogan …. Sigh!

I was very happy to get Steamboat a reign and always pleased to job Hogan in a WrestleMania main event, even if it means ruining my streak of 100 rated WrestleManias. Without getting into spoilers, the AI makes a very interesting choice for the next World Champion. But first, I'm going back to WCW...

I just voted a little in my mouth at the thought … surely not even the AI could be that stupid.

Guys... I have some bad news.

Dino Bravo is... a free agent. The AI lets him walk when his contract comes up in late '90. The Flamingos are no more. :(:(:(

BOARDING THE ROCKET TO STARRCADE '90

WCW notes from 1990:

Mv46KpP.jpg

DUSTY WRITES THE SHIP: After Bill Watts’ ouster as booker at the end of ’89, Dusty Rhodes spent most of 1990 stabilizing WCW. The company still can’t touch the WWF in terms of popularity, but they’re no longer bleeding fans as they figure out their identity.

7cH1Ap5.jpg2r0N6Kp.jpgbgSuzWF.jpgrJfMa9g.jpg1wPA91d.jpg

GLACIAL RUN-OFF FROM THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS: Following his brutal beating by Money Inc at Starrcade ‘89, it was revealed that young Dustin Rhodes might never wrestle again. In despair, Dusty struck a deal with Mr. Fuji, the guru of the White Castle of Fear, who healed Dustin by dipping him in the mystical waters that flow from the Mountain of Madness (you know the ones). Of course, this turned Dustin evil. Supernatural cowboy The Gunslinger was also corrupted by Fuji’s magic, making the White Castle of Fear stronger than ever. As we approach Starrcade, Kevin Sullivan and Vader have captured the tag titles and Dustin the TV title.

GLtYytH.jpg

HARLEY COMES HOME: Lost in the shuffle in WWF, July saw Harley Race jump to WCW. Apparently, no one took it personally when the eight time NWA/WCW World titlist declared the WWF championship was the most important thing he had ever won.

9SWwnT9.jpg

A BAD WIND BLOWS…: Kerry Von Erich suffered a slipped disk in August. After two months on the shelf, the Texas Tornado returned with a mean streak. He stopped playing to the fans and began punishing opponents with the Iron Claw.</div>

Awesome diary entry, I enjoy this more then real life WWE at the moment.

One question I would like to ask you is how do you get the photos lined up properly on your diary entry as I just started my first diary on here and would appreciate the help to make it look nice.

Ha -- I enjoy most of the diaries on here more than real life WWE! But thank you!

For lining up the pics: just enter them without line breaks to get them side by side.

If you see a post with formatting that you're curious about, you can always "quote" the post to see what bbcode is being used. I looked at a lot of the prettier diaries when I started to see how people were doing things, too. I'm still tweaking my own formatting all the time. Good luck!
