The first match featured a woman scorned and her… hired Repo Man? Davey Boy was on the defensive for most of this, thanks to Tina Ferrari’s distractions and Repo’s frequent cheating. However, Smith eventually got ahold of Repo’s tow rope, won a tug-of-war, and hit the running power slam for the victory. </p><p>

Jake Roberts and Terry Funk mocked Good Cop Bad Guy and wished them both speedy recoveries. The two offered to fight anyone on the roster who might want a match. Their challenge was answered by… the scrappy team of Tito Santana and Shane Douglas. </p><p>

Santana and particularly Douglas were allowed to get some offense in and tease the huge upset. Ultimately though, Tito was pinned following a Roberts DDT. </p><p>

After taking out both of Beefcake’s fellow Kings, the Warlord came into this one confident. The big man dominated for most of the match, until Beefcake – displaying his vastly superior ring craft – slipped out of the Full Nelson and rolled up the Warlord. Brutus Beefcake retained the WWF Intercontinental title. </p><p>

A 40 minute battle of technical one-upmanship. After multiple reversals, Hart finally had Steamboat locked in the Sharpshooter. Steamboat appeared passed out and his arm nearly dropped a third time when Hart, exhausted, lost his grip on the hold. From there, Steamboat rallied and eventually pinned Hart after a ragged top rope cross-body. </p><p>

Well, now that the good wrestling is out of the way – send out the hosses! This one was a real brawl between four power houses. Slick proved to be the deciding factor. He lured Simmons away from ringside long enough that Spivey and Vicious were able to hit a spiked power bomb on Reed. The Skyscrapers won the WWF World Heavyweight Tag titles. </p><p>

“The Mega Power” Nikita Koloff was played out to the ring by his pal the Honky Tonk Man, debuting his new song ‘Ballad of the Mega Power.’ </p><p>

Koloff looked like an unstoppable monster here, but Savage refused to be put away. Savage kicked out of a brutal Russian Sickle, which shocked Koloff and put the champ on the back foot. Soon, Savage was in position for his patented elbow drop. Jimmy Hart distracted the ref, though, allowing Honky Tonk Man to break his guitar over the back of Savage’s head. Koloff added a second Russian Sickle to seal the victory over Savage, much to the disgust of the crowd. Nikita Koloff retained the WWF World Heavyweight title. </p><p>

It's hard to show favoritism when you're only booking one month per year and it's even more difficult to push guys down the card (I despise Hogan, but the AI sure doesn't). That said, Hart was my favorite growing up and I'm always going to push him. I didn't feel like it was the right time to put him over Steamboat, but just being in there with him got Hart +3 pop across the US and bumped him up from UM to ME, which is the level where the AI really starts getting people over.

 

At least Hulk and Randy managed to just stick to steroids.

 

The last time I mentioned a scandal in this thread, the AI hit me with one. So... I'm sure Hogan and Savage will be fine!

Piper's leaving to shoot another movie in 2 months, so the arrangement with Adonis actually makes sense and suggests (in my head-canon) that WCW learned from WWF's experience of putting their title on a part timer.

 

To me having Adonis as a champ is fun. I'd probably book it so he faces Piper with a stip that the loser leaves WCW (which is how Piper gets written out to go make his movie).

December, Week 1, 1991.

 

A red-faced and angrily wooing Ric Flair opened the show. Irate about Roddy Piper’s arrival in WCW, Flair challenged the Hollywood star to a match. As the former WCW World Champion, Flair was due an automatic rematch with Piper’s stunt double Adrian Adonis. He volunteered to forfeit that rematch if it meant Piper would get in the ring with him at Starrcade. Piper and Adonis answered Flair’s challenge, with Piper saying he would need to talk Flair’s offer over with “his people.” Meanwhile, Adonis handed out autographed headshots.

Lex Luger defeated masked Japanese import the Pegasus Kid with a Torture Rack.

Backstage, as Piper and Adonis waited for the valet to bring their Rolls Royce around, they bumped into Kerry Von Erich. The WCWA World Champion told Piper that he didn’t mind having some Hollywood sideshow running around with the secondary World title, so long as Piper and Adonis respected Kerry’s position as the company’s top champ. “Ehh sure Corey, whatever you say, kid…”

Grumpy veteran Harley Race stretched Super Calo in a one-sided contest.

A vignette from the White Castle of Fear. Kevin Sullivan and his spiritual advisor Mr. Fuji lamented the group’s recent setbacks. Vader and The Gunslinger trained by breaking human bones over each other’s heads. Dustin Rhodes experimented with face paint. “A sacrifice may be necessary to restore our power,” Sullivan mused.

Barry Windham defeated Cactus Jack after manager Ted DiBiase distracted Jack.

US Champion Kevin Von Erich visited the announce desk to register his disgust with his brother and the World Class Worldwide Associates, saying he was sick of his brother smearing mud on the once honorable Von Erich name. Overhearing, Windham slapped the taste out of Kevin’s mouth, prompting a near brawl.

Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Michael Hayes with a diving headbutt.

GRADE: 73

 

TV champion Owen Hart and Brian Pillman cut a snide promo about how great their last year had been since they dumped old man Magnum TA as their manager. Tonight, they’d cap their breakout year by adding the tag titles to their collection.

In a fast-paced back-and-forth match, Hart & Pillman defeated the Rock N Roll Express when Pillman pinned Robert Gibson while using the ropes for leverage. Owen Hart and Brian Pillman won the WCW World Tag Team titles.

In the main event, #1 Contender to the WCWA World title Bruiser Brody paired with old rival The Ultimate Warrior to take on World Class representatives Sting and Buzz Sawyer. Brody and Warrior had trouble getting on the same page, tagging themselves in with increasing force. Sting at first seemed reluctant to battle his former partner the Warrior, but eventually complied with instructions shouted by DiBiase from the outside. Despite their disadvantages, Brody’s wild offense was enough to eventually score a pinfall on Sawyer.

GRADE: 82

 

After the match, DiBiase, Kerry Von Erich, and Barry Windham hit the ring to beat down Brody. Sting, meanwhile, prevented the Ultimate Warrior from joining the fray by blindsiding him with a chair to the back. The assault by World Class was eventually stopped by the intervention of Dusty Rhodes and Kevin Von Erich. Following the beatdown, Brody trashed the ringside area, scaring everyone, even his supposed allies.

GRADE: 83

This man Bruiser Brody, he comes busting into my office after the show, talking about how he never wants to work with Buzz Sawyer again. Sawyer, man, he got the whole pharmacy and the corner liquor store in him when he goes out for last week’s main event. Brody – for all his wild man persona – he’s worried about getting hurt. He’s still flipping out about working with Warrior at last year’s Starrcade – calls him the Ultimate Botch, which pisses Jim right off whenever he hears it. Brody says there ain’t no professionals in the locker room. Then he tells me this is no way to treat a future World champ and I’m like whoa baby, slow down.

 

Anyhow, all this gets run up the ladder to Daddy Ted and he says ‘I don’t want this place turning into WWF’ and ‘don’t bother me with this, Dusty, I’m golfing.’ So we send Sawyer off to rehab along with some of the other boys that have problems like Rick Rude. Turner greases the wheels so nothing gets to the press but of course it gets around the locker room. And the prevailing attitude is Brody snitched.

The show opened with The Taken (Dustin Rhodes and The Gunslinger) defeating the Garvins in a pretty one-sided contest.

The Taken were joined by the other Lords of White Castle. Kevin Sullivan announced that the group would be performing a ritual sacrifice at Starrcade. “Take me, take me!” A fan at ringside – one of these kids into this new “grunge” music – jumped the barricade. He was nearly destroyed by Vader before Dustin intervened to rescue the fan. “I like this one, Lord Vader. He shall be… my Raven.”

GRADE: 79

 

The Ultimate Warrior defeated Bobby Eaton in a back-and-forth match that showcased the Warrior’s power and rope-shaking.

GRADE: 80

 

Backstage, Sting cut a promo with Ted DiBiase. The Billion Dollar Man started to do the talking, but Sting cut him off. He warned his old partner Warrior to keep his distance. “I don’t like working for World Class Worldwide but that doesn’t mean I’m going to lay down and take a beating from you, Warrior!”

Harley Race stretched Robert Gibson for another victory.

Dusty Rhodes cut a fiery promo about Ted DiBiase. “Two years you been ducking me, rich man… you stole my son… you stole my pride… at Starrcade, baby, we gonna end this.” Rhodes challenged DiBiase to join him where there’s no such thing as income inequality – inside a steel cage!

Them Good Ol’ Boys (Bob Holly and Steve Austin) defeated mean amateur wrestlers the Steiner Brothers in a back-and-forth bout. Interestingly, Magnum TA escorted Them Good Ol’ Boys to ringside.

After the match, Magnum cut a promo with Holly and Austin, introducing them as his new clients. He promised revenge against the tag champs Owen Hart and Brian Pillman.

In a stiff brawl, Arn Anderson defeated Meng.

Arn Anderson stuck around after his match to watch Ric Flair’s back during his contract signing with Roddy Piper. (They’re friends again, aww!) Piper and Adonis talked some trash, then signed the contract that guaranteed Flair a match with Piper in exchange for him relinquishing his World Title rematch. “See, I knew you Hollywood boys wouldn’t read the fine print. The Nature Boy did relinquish his title shot but the contract stipulated to WOO! – to who…”

 

The crowd went nuts as Lex Luger’s music hit. “The Total Package” arrived, grinning and posing, ready to face Adrian Adonis at Starrcade. Piper fled, thumbing through the contract and screaming about his lawyers. Flair and Luger shook hands in the ring.

GRADE: 100

 

In the main event, Kevin Von Erich successfully defended the US title against Barry Windham, winning by DQ when Kerry Von Erich, Ted DiBiase, and Sting hit the ring to annihilate him.

GRADE: 83

 

Bruiser Brody rampaged to the ring, running off the members of World Class Worldwide Associates. With the bad guys scattered, Brody then targeted Kevin Von Erich, pummeling the much-abused US champ. Dusty and the Ultimate Warrior rushed the ring to stop Brody, who hollered about hating all Von Erichs as he was held back. Kerry looked on coldly from the top of the ramp.

GRADE: 86

Just wanted to pop by here and officially close this diary up. I've obviously been distracted by other things this month and can't see myself going back to this game now.

 

Some quick bits about what was going to happen:

--On the last Saturday before Starrcade, Bruiser Brody (set to challenge Kerry Von Erich) requested his release. Very on brand. Dusty refused to let him walk, then used Saturday Night to write him out in an injury angle. Still ruined the planned double main event...

 

--At Starrcade, Lex Luger beat Adrian Adonis for the WCW title, then got hot shot'd into a match with Kerry and defeated him for the WCWA title. We would've been entering the era of LEX.

 

--Meanwhile, in WWF, Nikita Koloff continued his reign as champion until the next WrestleMania. The AI turned him face, so I planned to rebrand him as Nick Koloff -- he got his citizenship and officially defected from Russia.
