The PPV began with a heated promo from Ric Flair as he arrived at the arena. The reigning seven-time WCW Champion said he refused to be pushed aside by some daddy’s boy never-was with a chip on his shoulder. He’s walking into Starrcade the man – WOO! – and he’ll be walking out the man, too.</p><p>

Kevin Von Erich tried to turn this match into a game of cat-and-mouse, stumbling the Gunslinger with his fast-paced attack. Ultimately, though, the supernatural Gunslinger finished Von Erich with an emphatic chokeslam. The Gunslinger is now 2-0 at Starrcade not that anyone is keeping count…</p><p>

Before the match, Lex Luger and Barry Windham hyped up the fans. “The Enforcers think there’s going to be a changing of the guard tonight. Well, they’re right – and it’s us! Tonight, we prove we’re the best team going in WCW!”</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 88</p><p> </p><p>

The superior teamwork of the Enforcers was on display early, with Arn and Tully isolating Barry Windham. The crowd popped for the hot tag to Lex and he eventually sealed the victory with a Torture Rack on Blanchard. The crowd really loved Luger. The suits in the corporate office are surely taking notes...</p><p>

This match featured more tests-of-strength, gorilla press attempts, and emphatic rope-shaking than any in WCW history. In the end, the Ultimate Warrior was able to get Bruiser Brody over his head and slammed to the mat. The Ultimate Warrior retained the WCW US title. </p><p>

While warming up for their shot at the WCW World Tag titles, “Billion Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase again reassured Dusty Rhodes that he’d have his back. “Rhodes, I didn’t make my fortune by ignoring golden opportunities and tonight is just that. Tonight, we want the same thing, to rid WCW of a scourge that we can’t stand the sight of…”</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 85</p><p> </p><p>

Unfortunately for dumbass Dusty, the scourge DiBiase was talking about was him. At the first opportunity to tag in, DiBiase abandoned his partner, turning this into a handicap match. Rhodes fought valiantly, but Vader in particular proved to be too much, brutalizing Dusty with multiple Vader Bombs before an academic pinfall. The Lords of White Castle retained the WCW World Tag Team titles. </p><p>

As the main event began, it seemed like Kerry Von Erich might be taking Ric Flair too lightly. After Flair dipped into his bag of dirty tricks and almost finished KVE with a roll-up, Von Erich got serious. Soon, Kerry began to dominate and it was all Flair could do to hang in the match. After a sneaky low blow, Flair did manage to get KVE locked in the Figure Four, but KVE broke free with a sitting discus punch. </p><p> </p><p>

Von Erich firmly took control. He blasted Flair with multiple discus punches, eventually busting open the champ. He refused to go for the pin and instead locked on the Iron Claw. When it appeared that Flair’s arm would drop a third time, KVE released the hold. The ref was puzzled as KVE went to the outside and retrieved his metal briefcase. Von Erich waited for a semi-conscious Flair to barely sit up before pulverizing him with the briefcase. The ref had no choice but to call for the bell. Ric Flair retained the WCW World Heavyweight title via DQ.</p><p>

<strong>GRADE:</strong> 90</p><p> </p><p>

“This is your champion? This is what WCW is all about? He ain’t even worth it. This whole dang company ain’t worth it…” Von Erich proceeded to douse the WCW World title in lighter fluid and set it on fire. He then opened his briefcase, revealing the old WCWA World Heavyweight championship. “A true championship… not a toy for some damn billionaire and his cronies…” He smeared Flair’s blood on the new title as the PPV went off the air.</p><p>

"Harley Race battered Sting with old-man offense" Alright that one's just hilarious.

"Unfortunately for dumbass Dusty" Hey now. Dusty went to the same school of "being a babyface" as Sting, give him a break.

Great show.

Another awesome show, it had me entertained the whole time, keep up the good work buddy.

Thank you both!

Haha my foreshadowing is so subtle! Getting ready to dive into WWF '91 and WrestleMania VII (which is pretty nuts, I gotta say) so it'll be a minute before we're back to WCW. When we rejoin them, Lex will have supplanted Flair as figurehead.

That was great. That Gunslinger needs to be cut though he will never amount to anything.:p

I'm pretty sure someone sent me a bitchy email about cutting the Gunslinger because of his bad selling. Tully, I think. I didn't listen!

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:24px;"><strong>1990: THE YEAR IN REVIEW</strong></span></span></p><p>

(Except for WCW, who we’re caught up on.) </p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<div style="padding:10px; border:10px solid #3399ff; background-color: #ffffcc; max-width:1000px;margin:auto;"></p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="2wi7DDq.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/2wi7DDq.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>SUPREME-BOAT</strong>: Following his victory over Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI, Ricky Steamboat spent the rest of 1990 putting on classic title defenses. He scored victories over longtime frenemy Jake Roberts, Randy Savage, and Hogan again. However, Steamboat would eventually drop the belt in December. To who? Stay tuned!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION:</strong> Shortly after WrestleMania VI, WWF expanded their footprint into various international markets. This led to a hiring spree that pulled in mostly washed up vets like Rocky Johnson and Bill Dundee, but there were a few intriguing signings. The WWF finally lured Stan Hansen and Terry Funk back from Japan. They also signed promising independent wrestlers Booker T and Scott Levy. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>GOOD COP BAD GUY:</strong> During his match with Big Boss Man at WrestleMania, Razor Ramon had a worked altercation with a fan. Ramon was charged with assault and, as part of his plea bargain, put in the custody of the Boss Man. The two now work as Good Cop Bad Guy, a Midnight Run style duo who are begrudgingly coming together. (This is the second time the AI has partnered former Mania opponents [RIP FLAMINGOS] and I love it.) </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>DOOM… IS A GOOD THING?:</strong> In May, Doom dumped Slick and turned face. This led to them dethroning Demolition as WWF tag team champions.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>PAUL OFFDOROFF:</strong> Paul Orndorff retired from wrestling in July. The former Intercontinental champion will be remembered as the man who ended the Heenan Family. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>THE KING OF THE RING:</strong> Also in July, “Adorable” Adrian Adonis won the King of the Ring. After the victory, Adonis turned face, becoming known as “The Benevolent King.” He acquired a t-shirt cannon and joined forces with Bob Orton and Brutus Beefcake in the Kings Club. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WE GOT A GOLD DIGGER:</strong> Disappointed to learn that Davey Boy Smith was but a commoner and not descended from British nobility, Tina Ferrari dumped him and turned heel. She’d lose her Women’s title to Japanese stalwart Itsuki Yamakazi. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>TRULY, THE WRESTLING TITLE:</strong> Unable to beat Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan set his sights on the Intercontinental title. He beat Bret Hart for the belt in October. “Nobody cares about that little title Steamboat’s got, dude. This belt is for all the continents, brother.” </p><p> </p><p>

</div></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>AWA, STILL A THING:</strong> The AWA continued to chug along as the USA’s distant third most popular company. 47 year-old Jimmy Snuka spent all of ’90 as their top champion. Despite the stagnant and old roster (except the Rockers), AWA did gain a few new fans largely thanks to their deal with ESPN. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>THE BATTLE FOR JAPAN:</strong> New Japan continued to reign supreme as Japan’s top promotion, beating back another challenge from All Japan who rose to National and then fell back to Cult. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>A MAEDA MAN:</strong> In January, Akira Maeda defeated Yoshiaki Fujiwara to win his first IWGP Heavyweight championship.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>LIFE’S UPS AND DOWNS:</strong> An interesting year for Giant Baba. The 53 year old booked himself to win April’s Championship Carnival (his 8th overall). In August, the Giant divorced from his wife Mokoto Baba. Guess there’s no longer a succession plan… </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>THE TRIPLE CROWN:</strong> Also during the Champion’s Carnival tour, long reigning All Japan champion Yoshiaki Yatsu dropped the Triple Crown to Hiroshi Wajima. Wajima’s history of concussions would force him to vacate the Triple Crown in November and leave All Japan without a champion heading into ’91. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING GRAND PRIX:</strong> Fat Japanese Elvis Shinya Hashimoto won his first ever G1. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>BROKEN NECK, HURT FEELINGS:</strong> In a six-man tag during All Japan’s summer tour, Genichiro Tenryu suffered a broken neck that threatens to end his career. In the media, Tenryu blamed Mitsuhara Misawa, opening a rift between the two stars. </p><p>

</div></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>US WRESTLER OF THE YEAR:</strong> Randy Savage (#4 ranked)</p><p>

<strong>TAG TEAM:</strong> The Mega Powers [2]</p><p>

<strong>YOUNG WRESTLER OF THE YEAR:</strong> Ultimo Dragon (NJPW)</p><p>

<strong>VETERAN WRESTLER OF THE YEAR:</strong> Antonio Inoki [2] (NJPW)</p><p>

<strong>FEMALE WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: </strong> Bull Nakano [3] (AJW)</p><p>

<strong>COMPANY OF THE YEAR:</strong> NJPW [12]</p><p>

<strong>MOST IMPROVED COMPANY:</strong> PCWF (Pacific Coast Wrestling Federation was founded in 1989 by Billy Jack Haynes after he was run out of the big leagues by Hulk Hogan. The company tries to bring life back to the Northwest territory with stars like Yokozuna and Diamond Dallas Page.)</p><p>

<strong>CARD OF THE YEAR:</strong> NJPW International Wrestling Grand Prix Finals [98]</p><p> </p><p>

My curated MOTY list excludes matches from non-events and includes at least one match from each Cult+ company:</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>10)</strong> Larry Zybsko d. Mike Graham, AWA November Supercard. 79. I don’t know, man. If this is your best match of the year, maybe it’s time to shake some things up AWA. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>9)</strong> Ric Flair d. Kerry Von Erich via DQ to retain the WCW World Heavyweight title, Starrcade ’90. 90. Hey, I booked this! Better than AWA, anyway. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>8)</strong> Kensuke Sasaki d. Kuniaki Kobayashi, AJPW Excite Series. 99. A show-stealer on the undercard, many have Sasaki tipped as the future of All Japan.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>7)</strong> Bull Nakano d. Chigusa Nagayo to retain the WWWA World Title, AJW Be Strong! 99. Nakano is the undisputed best women’s wrestler in the world and puts on multiple joshi classics every year.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>6)</strong> El Dandy d. Lizmark to retain the NWA World Middleweight title, CMLL Epocas Del Apuro. 99. El Dandy continues to dominate on the Mexican scene.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>5)</strong> Masahiro Chono & Hiroshi Hase d. Tatsumi Fujinami & Akira Maeda in NJPW Super Grade Tag League block action. 100. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>4)</strong> Tatsumi Fujinami & Akira Maeda d. Antonio Inoki & Keiji Mutoh in Super Grade Tag League block action. 100. Two absolute all-star teams battled in the Super Grade Tag League, although neither would go on to win. That honor would be collected by the team of Masahiro Chono and Hiroshi Hase. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>3)</strong> Tatsumi Fujinami d. Shinya Hashimoto, NJPW Thunder of Heart. 100. Hashimoto showed a ton of heart in this loss which would lead to him winning the G1 the following month. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>2)</strong> Ricky Steamboat d. Hulk Hogan to retain the WWF World Heavyweight title, Saturday Night’s Main Event April. 100. Apparently Hogan was more generous in this AI booked WrestleMania rematch. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>1)</strong> Tatsumi Fujinami d. Atsushi Onita in block action, NJPW International Wrestling Grand Prix. 100. Neither of these guys would make the finals, but they sure put on the best match of the tournament. </p><p> </p><p>

</div></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>NEXT:</strong> The Road to WrestleMania VII. In the meantime, let’s do a contest! Someone beat Ricky Steamboat for the WWF World title in December. And, in January, someone beats Hulk Hogan for the Intercontinental title. <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2390497&postcount=113" rel="external nofollow">Both of these new champions appeared on WrestleMania VI.</a> Who are they?? Correct guessers can recommend a signing for ’91 WCW, which is where I’m at in the game. </p><p> </p><p>

Intercontinental?</strong></p>

<strong>BIRTH OF THE MEGA POWER:</strong> Long aligned with fellow Jimmy Hart clients The Mega Powers, it came as a shock when Nikita Koloff did what neither Hulk Hogan nor Randy Savage could: defeat Ricky Steamboat for the WWF World title. In the ensuing weeks, egged on by his manager and personal balladeer The Honky Tonk Man, new champion Koloff began referring to himself as “The Mega Power.” Obviously, this doesn’t sit well with Hogan and Savage, who have both struggled recently in singles competition.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>BARBERMANIA:</strong> At the Royal Rumble, Brutus Beefcake beat Hulk Hogan for the Intercontinental title. This marked the second high profile clean victory Beefcake got over backstage pal Hogan, with the last one in the Finals of the ’87 King of the Ring. Cronyism at its finest.</p><p>

<strong>TAGGING OUT:</strong> WWF allowed the contracts of Bill Eadie and Dino Bravo to expire, closing the curtain on two of their long running tag teams in Demolition and The Flamingos. Rumor has it that WWF are already hard at work repackaging Barry Darsow into a new character. Koko B Ware, meanwhile, has begun working as a flamboyant bird-loving heel… a gimmick which hasn’t exactly taken flight.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>BILL DUNDEE DIES IN ACCIDENT:</strong> Veteran Bill Dundee had been working a number of dates for WWF as a jobber. After a taping of Superstars in January, Dundee was killed in a one-car accident. Investigators believe that alcohol may have been involved. The incident has cast a pall over the WWF locker room heading into WrestleMania…</p><p>

The Mega Power, that's outstanding. Generally curious who won the Rumble now.

Oh, shoot, I meant to mention that in my recap. Jake Roberts won the Rumble. We aren't yet in canon Rumble-winner-gets-a-title-shot territory (that's '93) and I'm not sure what I'm going to do when we get there. I've been working with the AI's wacky champions every year, not sure I want to deal with them booking my entire WrestleMania main event.

EDIT: Also Nikita definitely looks more like a Michigan auto mechanic than he does a Russian asset! That's why it was so easy for him to infiltrate America.

PRIME TIME WRESTLING

March, Week 1, 1991.

Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Nikita Koloff, and Honky Tonk Man are out first, along with Jimmy Hart and his megaphone. This was ostensibly time for Hogan and Savage to cut a promo on Doom, but it ended up being mostly Koloff giving them a condescending pep talk. “My comrades, tonight you at last join me in promised land, yes? As Dostoevsky said, the life of champion is lonely one…” Honky Tonk then played one of Koloff’s favorite jams. Hogan seemed pretty unruffled by the whole thing, but Savage was pissed and bailed on the interview early.

GRADE: 100

The team of Jake Roberts and Terry Funk defeated the Rougeaus. The announcers get over how Roberts and Funk don’t need to break the rules but do it for the fun of it.

GRADE: 81

We cut to the offices of Cobb County Bail Bonds where Razor Ramon and Big Boss Man are watching the show. “Well, partner,” Boss Man said, “looks like we got a new case.” Ramon sighed and flicked a toothpick into the ceiling where it joined dozens of others.

GRADE: 58

“The Benevolent King” Adrian Adonis picked up an easy win over Kareem Muhammad.

GRADE: 77

Itsuki Yamazaki cut a quick promo where she demanded the best possible challenger for the Women’s title at WrestleMania.

GRADE: 74

Davey Boy Smith handily beat Paul Roma with a running powerslam.

GRADE: 78

After the match, the Bulldog got jumped by a shifty individual in a black mask and a trench coat patched by tire pieces. “Hey, that’s the local REPO MAN, Monsoon! I mean – not that I know a guy like that.” The crowd ate it up because they have great taste in gimmicks.

GRADE: 90

In a hotly contested match, Doom retained the World Tag Team titles when Butch Reed pinned Randy Savage after a crushing double shoulder tackle. Doom isolated Savage throughout the match. Getting screamed at by Jimmy Hart certainly didn’t help focus Macho.

GRADE: 92

Following the commercial break, cameras backstage catch Jimmy Hart pleading with Hogan to dump Savage as his partner so he can team with Koloff. “Man, if you don’t do it, the Mega Powers will die, Hulkster!” Hogan considered this. “Maybe they should die, brother.”

GRADE: 94

In a solid back-and-forth match, Bret Hart defeated Greg Valentine with a Sharpshooter.

GRADE: 77

After the match, Hart cut a promo about how there’s only one wrestler in the WWF he respects as his technical equal and he’s never gotten to step in the ring with him. He challenged Ricky Steamboat to a match at WrestleMania.

GRADE: 86

The Warlord defeated Bob Orton with a Full Nelson, refusing to relinquish the hold long after Orton had passed out.

GRADE: 79

In the night’s final segment, Andre the Giant arrived in street clothes to announce his retirement from the WWF. In the midst of a standing ovation for Andre, Stan Hansen and Big John Studd interrupted. “You think you just get to hobble off into the sunset, you bootlicker?” Hansen asked. “Nuh uh. Not when there’s still boys like me and Studd here that got some scores to settle. You been ducking me since Japan, Andre. Well, duck this!”

Hansen nearly decapitated Andre with a huge lariat – and Andre does not look like he’s in shape to take too many of those. Hansen and Studd put the boots to Andre until they’re run off by none other than Hulk Hogan. Andre seemed as shocked as the fans when Hogan helped him back to his feet.

NEXT TIME! ON PRIME TIME WRESTLING...

After saving Andre the Giant from a vicious assault, Hulk Hogan takes on one of the perpetrators! What are Hogan's motivations? And with "The Mega Power" Nikita Koloff and Randy Savage both scheduled to appear, somebody might just get their feelings hurt!
