Very fascinating stuff. I don't normally read WMMMA diaries, but because of our work together on the TEW board I had to check this out and I'm really liking it -- even if you didn't tell me it was coming.

Is that disappointment I'm reading between the lines? All joking aside, I wasn't actually expecting anyone to read this, besides maybe CGN91 who did an MMA diary and inspired this one, so I didn't hype it up or anything. MMA diaries seem to be mostly about real world mods, minimal reader response and usually, a quiet death. I'm actually surprised to get any reader comments!

- Originally booked for RSC 18: Tavares vs Dorridge, the fight between LeMarche and Egorov was moved to this show and saw the Russian fighter go after his opponent's recently broken nose. LeMarche was dominant for the first two rounds though, keeping Egorov against the cage for some close quarters fighting and it wasn't until the final round that the Canadian was finally able to complete a takedown. Once he did though, he had little trouble in hitting the shots needed to achieve a TKO finish and start his RSC career strong in decisive fashion.

- What a night for Jan Bodjukan! Entering as the heavy favourite and hometown hero, he got absolutely plastered by a big right hook from Smirnov in true cinematic fashion. A single move into the fight, a one punch knockout, KO of the Night award and a much needed victory for Tomasz Smirnov!

- A similar story in the Women's Featherweight fight, where Rachel McGuiness entered as the heavy favourite and did indeed get the win just one move into the bout. Though she didn't knock her opponent out, she showed enough of a killer instict to mount her fallen opponent and deliver blow after blow for the TKO, giving the rookie Ivanov her first career loss.

- Camp Ortega versus Dojo of Zui Quan in the semi main event, a stand and bang affair that saw the 36 year old Indonesian veteran focus on his opponent's leg with scything kicks. Although that got Vega limping, it wasn't enough for Sriyanto to convert into a takedown and neither did the clinch yield anything for him.

- No love lost between the two fighters in the all-German main event title bout. Biel went all-in for some grapppling from the start, forcing Broderick to the cage but eating a big right hand that almost cost her everything! The challenger was unable to finish the fight though and once Round 2 began, Biel got the takedown. It took some time for a successful pass, but Broderick's weakness on the mat showed and the champion was able to sink in the hooks for the submission to make her first successful title defence.

News post RSC 19: Biel vs Broderick</div>

- Brazilian Midleweight fighter Andre Passos was cut from the roster, following his second loss with RSC. Failing to win and become popular with Russian audiences, Passos was deemed no longer needed and was released following his loss to Budiman Lie via Unanimous Decision.

- Bienvenido Romulo third consecutive loss seems to have sent him back to the drawing board as the Phillipino fighter decided to join the Tai Sheng Men Society. RSC officials also made the decision to drop him to the Light Heavyweight division, feeling that his size has been a detrimental factor in the Heavyweight division so far.

Some very interesting news coming out of Red Star Combat lately and with every fighter making weight for RSC 20: de Avila vs McDwyre last night, here is a short recap of everything before the Russian company's next show

Unannounced Plans

Several RSC fighters have been reported to enter training and it is rumored that the company already has put together the cards for some of its summer shows filled up. No official confirmation or denial has come out yet, but it is expected that the June to August shows and cards will be announced once they've been finalized.

Evelina Popsil injury

Young Russian Tae Kwon Do fighter Evelina Popsil was reportedly hospitalized after she tore her rotator cuff during training. Popsil wasn't scheduled to appear in any RSC shows up until May, so it is believed she would be fighting in June instead. Whether she will be replaced or the fight cancelled, we do not know yet.

BCF with the double contract offer

#7 RSC Middleweight Wenderson de Oliveira (11-1, 1-0 RSC) and #5 Welterweight Vjekoslav Sarich (9-1, 2-1 RSC) have both now officially left RSC after accepting exclusive deals to fight for BCF in Britain. The loss of Sarich especially has been analyzed as a significant loss for the Russian company, as the Croatian had been doing well and was well on his way to a title shot.

Final Fight before the big leagues

BCF wasn't the only one to sign RSC fighters to exclusive deals though. ALPHA-1 got Dominic Ash, Newton Reis and Zabit Mansurov recently. All three fighters will be making their first and final appearance for RSC tomorrow, with Ash facing Nshan Ramazyan while Reis and Mansurov will be competing against each other.

- Regina de Avila silenced all the critics who called her title win over Kaczmarek a fluke when she choked out challenger Janey McDwyre in the first round of the main event! A fast and exciting fight, de Avila's first title defence was an absolute success and with things heating up between former champion and Lynda Epsom, it seems that Rachel McGuiness will be the one to fight the Portugese champion next.

- It was never going to be pretty in the semi main event, a heated rivalry further fuelled by online trash talk between Ilya Fedorov and Saul Cervantes. Fedorov seemed like he'd done his homework, repeatedly avoiding the head kicks of Cervantes until exhaustion took his toll and a kick finally connected with less than a minute left in the third round. It didn't come with enough force for a knock out or TKO though and things went to the judges who came back with the least desirable outcome, a split decision marking Cervantes as the winner and probably extending the feud into another fight in the future with hopes of a decisive finish.

- Mily Golovanov's undefeated RSC streak continued, at the expense of Mando Romer's 11-0 career streak in an exciting battle at the Welterweight division. Romero's strikes kept the Russian at bay in the first round and he was literally saved by the bell after Golovanov got the takedown but ran out of time to convert it into a submission. Round 2 began with Golovanov picking up right where he left off and moments later, the tap out came.

- No love lost in the night's Super Heavyweight fight, a long and heated rivalry between Capes and Goggins. The match itself wasn't as long though, with Capes barely landing a jab before he caught Goggins with a big head kick! Following that up with a crunching uppercut, he knocked Goggins to the mat and finished the fight by raining down the punches.

- Antanas Kucera remains undefeated in RSC and what an impressive victory he was able to pull off against his compatriot Adam Mlakar! Mainly known for his wrestling skills, Kucera gave and received the opening salvo of blows, but as soon as he found an opening, he delivered a stunning uppercut to knock his opponent out cold!

- Otto Renner secured his spot in the Heavyweight Top 10 with a dominant victory over the debuting Wally da Cunha. Entering the fight as a heavy favourite, Renner only took a few shots before he was able to shoot, taking his opponent down to dominate him with strikes that forced the TKO finish.

Disaster strikes!

Just a few hours after the weih-ins for RSC 21: Massey vs Komagata, Super Heavyweight fighter Melvin Yeo somehow strained his wrist, meaning his scheduled fight against Zydrunas Sigauskas will not be happening at the show. Red Star Combat has announced the fight will be moved to a future card, however that leaves their show with just six main fight and one more in the pre-show, leading many fans and critics to criticize it as a "cash grab" that's not worth its money.

More departures

GAMMA announced the signing of Jack Humpreys a few days ago, with the note that Humphreys still has one last fight for RSC in the summer before he can appear for them. Ana Natalia Pinto, Ewa Kranjic and Nshan Ramazyan weren't as lucky, their departures announced after their losses at RSC 20: de Avila vs McDwyre after a long series of disappointing performances.

An eye to the future

Red Star Combat have issued a statement, saying their Summer 2003 schedule and updated rankings will be announced the day following RSC 21: Massey vs Komagata. With signings, cuts and departures affecting the landscape as much as fight results do, fans are already guessing what the future might look like for the Russian company.

- Maya Komagata did the impossible! A worthy new champion in the RSC Women's Bantamweight division, Komagata had a rough couple of rounds as Massey chased the rear naked choke, but she fended off all attempts successfully. Massey tried switching tactics in the third round and almost got a TKO finish when she had the challenger cornered in the cage, but Komagata survived even that, somehow escaped and caught the Rotterdam Rock with a huge head kick for her own TKO victory!

- Dali continues to impress! Backing his loud mouth with iron fists that defied the odds, Dali knocked out a man seven spots above him in the rankings in just the first round, drawing audible boos from the St. Petersburg crowd who saw their hometown fighter defeated in such fashion.

- Can anyone stop Chakrit Mamanee in the Lightweight division? Apparently not, as the Thai fighter ended his fight with a single blow that knocked out his opponent, pushing his undefeated streak further and building up his reputation!

- Third time sure was the charm for Brazil's Rosamaria Correa, who almost took out her opponent before Haley Lovebond was saved by the bell. Pushing herself to finish the fight, Correa managed to do so with a big head kick that knocked her opponent down for the strikes that ended the fight.

- What an upset win for the debuting Marvin Crews! The Jamaican entered this fight as a heavy favourite, only to get caught with a big head kick just seconds into it! Mazur lacked the stopping power to end the match via knock out or TKO though and paid for it dearly when Crews managed the sweep to get on top of the mount and bring the strikes that ended the fight in his favor!

- He sure is "The Talented" mr. Ripley, but they might as well call him "Uppercut" Ripley too. Defending RSC Middleweight Champion Sutton Ripley hit one of his trademark uppercuts already in the first round, but challenger Carl Ratcliffe stayed in the fight, avoiding a TKO finish as the two men fought till the clock ran out. Ripley stuck to his gun and this time he got the killshot, nailing Ratcliffe with another uppercut in round two for the knock out!

- Entering the fight as a heavy favourite and enjoying a big reach advantage, Dwight Witherspoon didn't quite impress during the first round against the big wrestler from Hungaria, but all it took was two head kicks to knock down the Hungry Hungarian in the second, with the champion dropping the bombs to get the TKO and retain.

- Not the kind of finish anyone hoped for the fight between Annika Sjolin and Laia Leele after months of them bashing each other on the mic and social media. Leele was aggressive and kept her opponent at bay, with Sjolin barely managing a clinch and some dirty boxing during the first two rounds. Once they got low on fuel though, Sjolin was able to close in and get the takedown, with Leele successfully fending off her attempts for a armbar or kimura. Sjolin was unable to finish her opponent off but at least got the win, even if it came by split decision.

- Speed, power, aggression and persistence brought former RSC Welterweight champion Dominykas Jankovic the win over Poland' Piotr Dabrowski. The Bulgarian shot for an early takedown and prevented the sprawl, looking to get the RNC applied. Dabrowski fended it off, but couldn't do it twice, tapping out to submit before round one was over.

- Fight of the kickboxers in the Light Heavyweight division and plenty of head kick attempts in it, with one almost ending the fight at the expense of the debuting Skala in the first round. Olano finally made it in the second, rocking the Russian bad enough with a head kick to get in the strikes for a TKO, although it made for a controversial finish as referee Richard Joyce took a second to long to jump in and protect Skala from taking more shots than necessary.

- An exciting first round with no clear winner or big moments in the Lightweight division, it was followed by a similar round and just as we thought things would go to the judges, Folke Dalen opened up his opponent with a one-two punch combo for the left head kick! Jankovic stumbled to the cage and Dalen pressed his advantage, nailing another big head kick for the knock out victory!

- What a start to the show, with Maria Ferraz taking to the skies few strikes into the opening round and nailing her opponent with a Superman punch! Whitehouse never saw it coming and the blows kept raining down on her, forcing the ref to jump in and stop the fight.

RSC Welterweight Championship: Fukusaburu Hirano (CR#1, 16-3-1, 1-0 RSC) def. Jack Humphreys (CR#2, 27-11, 1-0 RSC) via Submission (Armbar) - Round 2, 3:30 [Great]

- RSC officials were certainly praying for Hirano to retain in the main event, as Humphreys signed an exclusive deal with GAMMA after this fight was originally booked, meaning that if he won, he'd have to immediately vacate the title, on top the same division's Mily Golovanov moving on to ALPHA-1. Hirano kept the American wrestler at bay with strikes in the first round and even when Humphreys managed to grab a leg and drive him against the cage during round two, the takedown didn't phase the defending champion who was able to pull off a literal win from underneath when he ensnared Humphreys' arm in a submission.

- A real rollercoaster in the semi main event, with heavy favourite and debuting fighter Hyun-Shik Lim spending most of the opening round on the mat under Adrian Swall, the former champion and underdog off to a hot start that hinted a potential upset. However, Lim added variety to his striking game to hold Swall at bay and apparently broke his jaw with a right cross in the second. From there, Lim had a clear target and as soon as the final round began, he zoned in, connected and knocked out Swall to seal his RSC debut with a victory.

- Tatjana Vinick finally tasted defeat at the hands of one of the best female pound for pound fighters in Manami Ken. In an extraordinary bout, Vinick was the aggressor for most of the fight, peppering her opponent with big hits but failing to take her out. Ken almost got the submission before she ran out of time in the first round and failing to find an answer, Vinick found herself down again in the second and tapping out to a kimura.

- Peter Windsor almost knocked out Jarno Zijlstra in the first round of the opening fight, but couldn't get the job done and ended winning via the judges. Katarzyna Wojchiechowska almost went down the same path when she nearly knocked out Vicki Summers with a vicious head kick in round one, but rebounded with a killer (pun intended) right cross to knock her out in the next one!

Attempting to play the incident down as an 'ill-received, misunderstood joke' so far, the Spaniard has caused some sour feelings with some of her fans and certainly provided her long time rival Annika Sjolin with plenty of fuel to troll her about.

- Red Star Combat's first ever "II" event headlined by a rematch, this was questioned given the decisive way the original ended, but somehow it ended being up even more exciting. Nouri opened the bout with a takedown attempt looking for a suplex, which Hayashi blocked by grabbing the cage and earning himself a referee warning. Nouri wouldn't be denied though and completed the suplex, failing to get a submission for the rest of round one. The second round began with another suplex attempt blocked by a cage grab and while it caused audible disapproval from the fans, it was never seen by the referee. Still, Nouri once again hit the suplex and this time it paid off, as after a couple of submission attempts, he was able to get to the RNC and retain his title.

- Hamilton Fonseca Jr. proved he's tough enough to represent the St. Petersburg Elite when he survived Rich Robinson's offence and convinced the judges to give him the win. He even nearly won the bout outright in the first round when he caught his opponent with a lucky kick to the head, but Robinson was able to recover and fight back, taking it to the scorecards where he lost by a fracture.

- Third time's the charm for Shaun Dico, who was quick to take down his opponent right off the bat but struggled to apply the RNC for the tap out. Gattai fended off two attempts, but couldn't avoid the third, leading to a quick submission in favor of the former RSC Middleweight champion.

- A heavy, heavy favourite, Foggy Lee made short work of his opponent tonight, charging in to drive him against the cage, taking him down and dropping the bombs for the quick TKO. Will he be fighting for the RSC Featherweight Championship next, a Lee vs Tavares main event is certainly something many fans would like to see headline a show.

- Big night for Indian MMA fans as both competitors from their country scored decisive wins. Daljit Samir finally broke her losing streak and reminded something of her old self when she defeated a former #2 in the rankings via TKO. Samir seemed to have an excellent gameplan going into this fight, never once allowing Palmer to shoot for a takedown and eventually managing to knock her down for the finish.

- Spectacular action in the Women's Bantamweight division as former title contender Tiiu "The Tigress" Kass was off to a strong start but couldn't finish her opponent, taking a big kick to the head for it in the second round. Routhwaite was unable to knock out her opponent, nor did she manage to get the TKO or Submission, but kept on coming and finally hit another big head kick right before the fight would be off to the judges, finishing it clean with a TKO win.

- A valiant fight for Vittorio Pescatelli in the Heavyweight division, but Hussain's punch is just to much to handle and he said so himself in the post-match interview. Pescatelli took several big left hooks in the opening round and while he stood his ground, eventually the damage piled up and the last one knocked him out near the end of the second round.

- What a big, much needed win for Mahak Kirakosyan in the pre-show over former RSC Light Heavyweight champion Nestor Morozov! The Armenian boxer finally got his first win with RSC after three straight losses over a formidable opponent and to make matters even grander, Morozov announced his retirement from the cage following the loss!

- A comeback from behind in the opening contest from "The Count" Jean-Pierre Richelleau, who found himself almost TKO'd in the first round. The 37 year old Frenchman perservered to the end and opened round 2 with a big head kick that set up his killer punch, capping his career with one last win as he retired right after the fight.

- Tough fight but no clean finish for the second Frenchman of the night and Maurice Braudel lost on the scorecards to fast rising prospect Antanas Kucera. Kucera entered the fight as the favourite thanks to his all-around game and indeed he took the kickboxer from Lens down twice, but Braudel successfuly fended off all submission attempts. However, it wasn't enough to convince the judges in the end, who agreed that Kucera had dominated the fight.

- A disappointing fight after all the trash talk between Epsom and Kaczmarek, with a lot of slow grappling and smothering for the full three rounds. The fall continues for former RSC Women's Featherweight champion, while Epsom claimed her stake to the top by calling out McGuiness next.

- Italy's Francesco Marazzina was off to a hot start in the main event, taking down the defending champion for some ground and pound, but was unable to finish him and found himself on the opposite end for the rest of the fight. Likewise, Tavares couldn't get past Marazzina's excellent ground defence and just when it all seemed like the judges would call this one, Marazzina jumped in with a hip toss and rear naked choke to steal the win and title out of nowhere!

- Tactics and a bit of luck kept the RSC Women's Featherweight Championship on Trish Biel in the main event. The German grappler closed in to prevent her opponent from using her kicks and constantly shot for takedowns. Rives got her chance when she knocked down the champion with a head kick in the third round, but couldn't finish off Biel, pushing the match to the full five rounds and the judges, where she lost.

- Show opened with a heated rivalry in the Super Heavyweight division, with neither man touching gloves, as was expected after their long war of words prior to this bout. Jimenez was the clear favourite and had the weight advantage but it only beat his conditioning instead of his opponent early on. Even when he was able to take down Gorner in the middle of round two, he couldn't finish the job with strikes or a submission and it looked like this was going to go to the judges, before Jimenez finally took down Gorner with less than a minute left to go and came away with a TKO finish.

- A much anticipated fight in the Lightweight division as the undefeated Chakrit Mamanee met with Harald Hubner in the German's RSC debut. Hubner, a long time roster member, has been mostly fighting for SIGMA and had something to prove here against the Thai submission specialist. It was a very even fight and it showed in the final result, but Hubner was just able to outstrike his opponent and prevent things from going to the mat, where Mamanee is strongest. It even looked like a knock out finish early in the third round was in store, but Mamanee survived the strike and subsequent bombs, however he did not manage to convince the judges of his dominance and was unable to retain his undefeated streak.

- Maja Krawczyk's undefeated streak was protected and grown in the Women's Featherweight division though, as the blue chipper rookie took out her Brazilian rival Rosamaria Correa to further rise up the ranks. Although Krawczyk did not call out any opponent after the fight, she is likely to face either Rachel McGuiness or former champion Vasya Kaczmarek and if she's able to win that fight, perhaps even move to a title shot.

- An all-British fight in front of a British audience for the semi main event and hometown hero Percy Catcher scored a big win over "The Big Dog" Dave Lennon, ending the bout in a roar of cheers from fans.

- And from an all-British co-main to the all-Brazilian title match of the night as Carlos dos Santos successfully retained his title against Leandro Piquet. The challenger got mildly outstruck in the opening round and apparently wanted to try a different approach in round two, however his clinch backfired when dos Santos used it to take him down and after some back and forth grappling, the defending champion was able to lock on the Rear Naked Choke to end the main event with a victory.

Following RSC 26: dos Santos vs Piquet, Portuguese Bantamweight fighter Lucia Pessoa tested positive for PEDs. As a result, her pre-show victory over Evelina Wozniak has been ruled a no contest and Pessoa was fired from Red Star Combat. This is the second violation for the Lady of War, following her first positive result last July, which saw her suspended for a year as a result.

Following their recent growth, to the point where Blurcat now rate them as a High Level National company, GAMMA decided to expand their roster of fighters and that came at the expense of several other MMA promotions, including Russia's Red Star Combat. Canadian Super Heavyweight Peter Windsor (CR #7, 5-3, 1-0 RSC) has already left after signing an exclusive deal with ALPHA and Austrian Heavyweight Otto Renner (CR #7, 12-4, 3-1 RSC) will also be departing after his fight against Josef Jankowski on September W2 at RSC 28: de Avila vs McGuiness and it wouldn't be a surprise if more RSC stars eventually were signed away.

- Pai Cheng had a simple but effective strategy for this title defense: grapple his opponent and keep him against the cage. All Boc could do was dirty box and block several suplex attempts, his highlight being a lucky punch in the 4th round that caused a cut above Cheng’s eye, but other than that the Moldovan challenger was gassed by the middle of the match and never really looked like a credible threat.

- After a heated rivalry, Sjolin and McDwyre faced off in a grapple-heavy fight. Sjolin remained in total control throughout the match, completing several takedowns in the first round, attempting submissions in the second and even managing a big slam in round 3. She couldn’t finish McDwyre off, but there was never any doubt about what the judges would rule.

- Two world class female Flyweights slugged it out in an extremely even match that apparently came down to experience and the bad cardio of Ferraz.

- Heavy favourite Jay Dorridge had a hard time against Jelinek and, coming off a defeat, it seemed like there would be an upset, but he withstood a rain of big right hands for almost 3 full rounds before he was able to take his opponent down and apply his dreaded Rear Naked Choke for the tap.

- Wojcik pulled an upset victory against the odds and in front of his home crowd to steal the pre-show and take home KO of the Night in his RSC debut. His opening salvo of punches came down with enough force to break Bodjukan’s jaw and then another punch to the jaw knocked him out.

- After two unsuccessful attempts with WEFF, Rachel McGuiness finally got her taste of championship gold! Bringing down a hailstorm of blows, the American was able to corner the defending Regina de Avila against the cage and land a left uppercut so hard it snapped her neck all the way back to take her out and end their fight in the second round.

- Drazen Gabelich made his RSC debut and his opponent gave him a serious run for his money. Indonesia’s Bambang Sriyanto expertly countered Gabelich’s grappling with great sprawls or by downright out-wrestling him and it took two and a half rounds before he was even taken down. Exhausted and disappointed by that point, Gabelich could do little besides smother his opponent in hopes of grinding out points, but the judges were clear about their scores in favor of Sriyanto.

- An embarrassing farewell for “The Emperor” Otto Renner in his last RSC fight as Jozef Jankowski broke his nose and knocked him out in their fight. Renner will now continue his career in GAMMA, while ex-SIGMA fighter Jankowski will be glad to continue with the Russian company after getting his first victory while under an RSC contract.

- Ilya Fedorov gave Marvin Crews his first taste of defeat in RSC, peppering him with big right hands for the full 3 rounds but never managing to pack enough power behind his punches to take him down. Crews could only withstand the blows, his own highlights being a single takedown late in the second and third rounds, which were far from enough to impress the judges.

- An unusually exciting undercard for this show, but the performance that really stood out was the only Women’s match in it, where Alicia Fothergill got a one-hit KO over the debuting Ona Pospisil in the very first contact of the fight to avenge her own debut loss to Dorothy Gayle in spectacular fashion.

- Having both finished 4 of their 5 last opponents, Sutton Ripley and Reed Howlett crossed swords in a main event that promised to be exciting and end in definitive fashion. Sure enough, Howlett brought the big strikes to give the defending champion a hard time, breaking his nose in the initial exchange and finally got the big blow he was looking for in the third round, knocking Ripley clean off for a KO victory and title switch. Following the fight, Sutton Ripley revealed this would be his last one for Red Star Combat. The Canadian fighter is still under contract with SIGMA and apparently on good terms with RSC, so the move was presumably due to him feeling he has outgrown the Russian promotion at this point.

- Rough landing for Australia’s Shane Gilchrist in his RSC debut, despite entering his fight against Andoni Olano as a huge favourite. The Spaniard, in his last fight for the company before departing for BCF, overwhelmed Gilchrist with a fast start that trapped him against the cage, before a huge uppercut snapped his head back to end the match in shocking fashion.

- Nora “One Shot” Bethlen may have finished all 5 of her previous opponents with her ferocious right hook, but for once she was unable to do the same against Catherine Newmar. The two fighters entered the cage with respective undefeated streaks and engaged in a hard striking battle that saw no clear winner, taking things to the judges who were in full agreement of what the outcome should be.

- Dovydas Novak won his rematch vs Piotr Egorov in the pre-show, via split decision. An ironic equalizer, as Egorov had also won their first match via split decision. Perhaps a third encounter is in the horizon to settle the score?
