Ahahaha!

I laughed aloud when I saw Nate DeM- I mean Mr America in the mask.

Drawing inspiration from some old school WWE I see

Technically I'm drawing inspiration from the Midnight Rider in Florida and the JYD angle in Mid South..

I mean...

That man is a new wrestler who has never been in CWI before.

The Redemption of Nicky Champion, Chapter One

The Redemption of Nicky Champion

Chapter One

4oHBsBP.jpg

He sat alone in his motel room with a bottle of water clutched in his large hand. The adrenaline was still coursing through his veins. A rush. A high like none other and Nicky knew about getting high. He could tell you about the differences in highs from a joint to coke to a variety of pills. He could describe the common misconception that all weed was a downer -- it wasn’t. He knew about how to manage his high. How to take an upper in the morning and then something to bring him back down and then take him back up. A roller coaster. A constant need to feed the addiction. To manage it. For years, he had managed it well. He had been the top wrestler in the world -- the number one guy in the number one company on the planet. He had made sure he never got drug tested. Sam Strong and later Allen Packer didn’t want to bust their golden goose, so they didn’t test him. It was a perfect system. Until it wasn’t.

One day, an investigative journalist had discovered an awful truth. Nicholas Buffalo Tiger, professionally known as Nicky Champion, was busted. For years, he had been getting pain pill prescriptions from a dirty doctor. He had brought other wrestlers to the same doctor. To the same ring. He wasn’t the All-American (an ironic concept that wasn’t lost on the Seminole) babyface that he had been portrayed as for a decade and a half or more. His hands weren’t clean. It had cost him everything.

He unscrewed the bottle of water and took a slow drink. He breathed through his nose and then back out through his mouth. He was trying to calm himself. Tonight was the first night he had been back in front of a live crowd in a year. He had almost forgotten how palpable a feeling it was. He had always been great at crowd management. He could flip his long, dark hair and look at the crowd and make them feel what he felt. He could take a beating and reach out to the kids in the front row and they would reach back for him. They would will him back to his feet and he would charge up. He would become impervious to pain. He would become the hero they all wanted and craved. He was good at that. He wasn’t good at being honest. And for a year, he’s had to be honest.

He was an addict and the curse of addiction is to chase the thing that destroys you. He had been destroyed. His seven-figure-a-year-guaranteed job was gone. Allen Packer had personally called him to tell him that his services were no longer needed. The guy who had helped him cover up his addiction for so long was the guy telling him they had to cut him. The irony wasn’t lost on Nicky about that either. Nicky had been revealed to be a liar -- and people generally disliked liars because a lie was an act of theft. It robbed people of faith and it makes them resent not just you, but themselves for believing it. For the first few months, Nicky received tons of hate mail. Letters and tweets and emails from people who were disgusted by him. Mothers that wanted to know how he could do this to their children. Fathers who wanted him to finish the job. It was not easy. He had to stand in court in a black suit with his hair pulled back and a sombre look on his face while a judge sentenced him to rehab instead of jail time. It was part of a plea to testify against the doctor. He stood there with journalists scribbling behind him and a judge admonishing him for his failures as a man as if Nicky didn’t already know that.

He took another drink of water and found the bottle was empty sooner than he realized. He rose from the bed and dropped the bottle in the trash and reached into his cooler for another. Before he had gotten busted, the cooler was always something cold and fermented that he could mix with something to take the pain in his back, or neck, or knees, or elbows, or soul away and he could drift into slumber. Back then, the rooms were nicer than this. Big suites with views that he could invite pretty girls up to and they could share a beverage and room services and tangle in the bedsheets. He pulled open the bottle and downed this one in a long, solitary gulp.

He had gone to rehab like the judge ordered. Rehab the made him sit in a circle and talk about how he was feeling. Rehab where everyone had chores and responsibilities and he could only be in his room certain times of the day and there was some kid right out of high school working the front desk that would say “You have a bedroom pass, brother?” And he’d have to say no and they’d make him go sit in the common area or go outside or some other crap he didn’t want to do. He had a six thousand square foot house and cars that cost more than any of them made in a year. He had a boat and a bank account that meant he didn’t really have to work all that much anymore, except maybe he did.

He had gotten out of rehab and the idleness drove him crazy. It almost made him relapse. He found himself sitting in front of a dingy bar in some podunk town in Florida where he could avoid cameras and prying eyes. The kind of bar that bikers and farmers and blue-collar guys went and drank and played pool at. The kind that’s air conditioning didn’t really work and was always warm in the oppressive Florida humidity, but it’s beer was cold and cheap and Nicky almost shut the truck off and walked in. He could have hid his face under a ball cap and ordered a beer or two and drank and taken the edge off. The edge that didn’t go away. He had forgotten just how much you feel with sobriety. He felt every damn thing. His fingers had gripped that steering wheel so hard that his knuckles were white. He was arguing with himself.

Nicky shook his head to clear thoughts from that time and pulled out his third water of the evening. He pulled the top off of it and took a small sip. He didn’t down this one. He just sipped. Tonight, he had made a shocking appearance in Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. A small little insignificant company running out of a nice looking theatre ran by Marvin Earnest. It wasn’t where he wanted to be, but he had called Allen and he didn’t want to bring him back. He’d called down in Texas to Kyle and they didn’t have a spot for him -- didn’t think it was wise given the current climate. Jerry had said that he “still had the sink of addiction” on him and wasn’t interested. SWF were trying to rebuild their reputation themselves after all. He called around to all of the companies. MAW, NYCW, CZCW, CWA, 21CW, RAW. He called anyone he thought would take him and they all told him the same thing. It wasn’t the right time. He was going stir crazy. If he didn’t get back to work, back to doing the only thing he had done in his adult life, he was certain he was going to end up in the bar he sat in front of for so long. Sam Keith called him back.

“Call Marv Earnest.” Sam had said. Nicky didn’t know Marv. Not really. They might have met in the early days of USPW or something, but Nicky didn’t really remember. Marv had never been a player in wrestling. He was a lieutenant. He was a solid, dependable announcer who did his job and didn’t make any waves. Apparently, unbeknownst to Nicky, he had been running Indianapolis and the surrounding towns. “It’s a place to maybe start.” Sam said. Sam didn’t own Nicky anything, but he was throwing him a lifeline here.

So Nicky had made that call and he could remember every word of it.

“Hey is this Marv Earnest?”

“Yeah. Who’s this?”

“Nicky.”

“Nicky who?”

“Champion.”

“Who is this really?”

“Nicky Champion.”

“Quit f*****g around. Who is this?”

“It’s really Nicky Champion.”

“Oh..Okay. What do you want.”

“To work.”

“So call Allen or Jerry or Kyle or Steve.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“They told me to go f*ck myself.”

“What about Sam or Cliff or…”

“You’re the only one left.”

“They all said no?”

“Yep.”

“Shit.”

“Yep.”

There had been silence on the phone after that. Long, uncomfortable silence.

“So, you got a spot for me?” Nicky had broken the silence.

“Nicky, I’d love to use you…”

“But now isn’t the right time?” Nicky finished the line that he was expecting.

“F**k the right time.” Marv exclaimed. “I’m getting my ass kicked out here. I just lost half my damn Women’s roster. I’m losing Trask. I just lost Chamberlain. I’m pretty sure I’m about to lose a couple of more women. NYCW is sniffing around Ox Mastadon for an exclusive deal.”

Nicky nodded though Marv couldn’t see it. “And you’re worried that I’ll jump ship.”

“Of course.” Marv said and at least he was honest. “Say I let you come work for me and you show people you can still contribute and then Allen and Steve and Jerry and Kyle start calling for you to come up to one of them and I’m left holding my d**k in my hands?”

“What if I give you a real commitment?” Nicky was desperate and desperate men do things they wouldn’t do otherwise.

“What kind of commitment?” Marv asked. Marv, as it turned out, was a decent businessman. Nicky learned that Marv had Funky Fedora and The Texas Express -- three guys he knew well, locked in for two-year non exclusive deals. He had Dreadnought and James Diaz locked in for two years. He was about to lock up some guy named Mr. Grappling and he had the Dynamite Express on similar deals -- though their’s was closing in six months in. He had tried to solidify his core as his talent started getting poached.

“I’ll give you two years.” Nicky had said. “I won’t leave for two years. After that, I’ll be forty-one. I’ll be twenty-three years into my career. I’ll probably chase the money then.”

“If the money will have you.”

“If the money will have me.”

There was another long pause and Marv spoke. “Okay. You sign on for two years. No creative control. If I need you to job you job. I’m not going to beat you into powder, but you can’t go over everyone.”

Nicky bit his tongue. Do a job? To guys who weren’t prime time, major league players. That was going to be tough. A two year contract meant Nicky would be locked in. He sighed. “Okay. Deal.”

“I’ll see you here for Christmas Clash.” Marv replied. “We’ll sign the papers before the show.”

Nicky blinked and he was back in his motel room. Back in Indianapolis just a couple of hours after the show. A couple of hours after signing papers that said he was a CWI contracted wrestler for the next two years. He had been the top wrestler in the world. He had performed in front of sold-out stadiums and tonight there were 130 people in the building when he walked out. He had thought those days were behind him, but it was either this or the nightmare of addicted once again. CWI was going to save his life. Whether Nicky wanted to be here or not, he knew he needed to be here. It was his penance. He had betrayed the trust of his fans and now he had to redeem himself. He had to start at the bottom.

<p>I just realized that it cut off part of the opening promo from with Zippy and Nicky. That’s very upsetting! I’ll have to see if I still have the rest of it written down.</p><p> </p><p>

Edit: I still had it and was able to add it in so that the opening segment is complete. I'm not sure where it went/why it wasn't there but I've fixed it!</p>

83 man roster for a Small company! Good lord talk about roster bloat.

US Patriot

Debut: Unknown

Had me in stitches!

I will be the first to admit that I suffer from a chronic case of bloated-rosteritis. I justify that, at least in my head, because a lot of the guys and gals on the roster are really just enhancement talents that instead of hiring local each time I just keep on the roster fulltime so that I can use on the spot shows I run as guys I can feed to people I'm trying to turn into stars by giving them wins.

And we don't know when he debuted! He's a mystery!

I adjusted in my overstuffed recliner and stared out at the city lights. The new year had come and come. Celebrations were had and people were excited. They were always excited at the dawn of a new year. It represented hope. A chance to do it better than the year prior. A chance to fix mistakes and all of that jazz. I didn’t care much for new year’s. Not in any kind of depressed or macabre way. I just wasn’t an idealist. I didn’t believe in the inherent goodness of people or that we were somehow born anew when the clock struck midnight on December 31st. We are who we are. We get what we’ve worked for and what we’ve earned -- but not normally what we deserve. We rarely get that.

I took a drink from my highball glass. In a retrospective way, 2023 had been the best year of my professional career. I had been as good as an announcer as I had ever been. I told good stories. I sold the action I needed to sell. As a promoter, I had gotten CWI in front of more fans than we had been in front of before. We ran thirty-six shows in 2023. Thirty-six! I had eclipsed the 100 show mark as a promoter and a booker. We were consistently doing above a hundred fans a big show and our spot shows in Edinburgh and Bloomington were closing in on a hundred there too. We were selling more merchandise, generating more advertising revenue. Our wrestling academy had produced two more talents to graduate to the main roster -- that would be making their debut at the January Edinburgh spot show. I had been able to hire new talent and deal with the loss of old talent. Over the course of the year, the bulk of my women’s roster had been signed away and I still managed to keep the division going strong with talent. We lost several guys who were planned for top programs, but I was able to keep the talent pool deep enough that we kept rolling and we ended the year with bringing in Nicky Champion, the biggest signing we could possibly make.

As a booker, I felt like 2023 was a good year. We spent the entire year telling the story of Nate DeMarcus and Funky Fedora. We ended the year with Nate under the hood to do the classic angle of the guy coming back under a mask. It was simple and ‘rasslin’ but it would be effective for our audience. We had told the story of the breaking, remaking, and rebreaking of Zippy Deverell. Zippy had been our standout performer since day one. His growth has been impressive. He went from being a rookie who could cut a half way decent promo to a well-rounded, fully-fleshed out wrestler who could cut a sensational promo and sell and was getting better as an actual wrestler. He’d never be Dan Stone Jr., but he didn’t have to be. He just had to be believable in his role. We had told a story with Ashley Keith and Lucy Stone-McFly of two multi-generational talents trying to take over the wrestling world. I had secured the Dynamite Express to breathe new life into the tag division and finally got the Dog Soldiers over the hump -- with Ace and Roger winning the tag belts and Stallion getting a run with the Indiana. Mr. Grappling had a fantastic year and looked poised to be a major player for us for the next several years. Bred for Battle had a year run where they were mostly gone defending the World Tag Titles, gaining experience and seasoning and making a name for themselves and were now back and ready to come back into the fold. I had just signed The Montgomery Family out of Texas. There were five of them, a lot of them, but I was confident that they could bolster our roster. We had a deep talent pool. Far deeper than we probably needed but I was guilty of a love of a deep pool of talent to call on. Plus, they only get paid when they work and I wasn’t using them all the time. I was trying to develop new talent while also book established talent to establish the territory and get my young guys enough experience that they can carry the company. It might be a fool-hearted decision but it was what I had chosen to run with.

On a personal level, 2023 had been great. Grace and I had been seeing each other steady. It was nice to have a romantic partner who understood my loves. Who understood my passions. Who had similar ones. She understood me. Isn’t that what was important? Plus, she was smart and well-travelled and well-spoken. She had a quiet dignity about her, but at the same time she was a woman of the wrestling business. She could wear a dress and heels and at the same time she could drink and curse with the best of them. There was a beauty in that. She was the first woman I had been with that was in the wrestling business. She was the first woman I had been with that understood the life that had so consumed me because it had consumed her and when she looked at me.. Man, that look could stop a train at the drop of a dime. Sometimes I liked to think about the future. I liked to imagine what a life with Grace would be like when we were old and damn near crippled. Neither of us had children. Neither of us had ever wanted children and we were both too damn old to try and start a family now. So we could grow old together. Move to a beach somewhere and sit on rocking chairs and stare at the ocean and hold hands and just be, but then the pragmasist in me, or the depression or self-doubt or whatever, kicks in and reminds me that tomorrow has no more existence than yesterday, you can only control now. Life is a series of right now’s. It’s a series of decisions about the now. All your best-laid plans thrown out the window by the now. After all, what if I was only Grace’s now? What if I wasn’t her tomorrow? What if I became her yesterday? A memory she kept in a scrapbook for her nieces and nephews like the pictures of her as a champion and programs with her name and face on them.

I took another drink and watched the lights flickering in the distance. Indianapolis was not a conventionally beautiful city. It didn’t have a great skyline. It had no majestic views of water or mountains or buildings. It was a city carved out of farmland. It was a city I loved; however. I had come to love it. Come to appreciate the gentleness of it. The slow pace. The polite people. The budding food scene that was on the cusp of being something.

“Come to bed” The voice cooed to me from behind. I could see her reflection in the window. Standing there with her hair dishevelled in a nightgown that wasn’t designed to be anything other than to catch and eye because it damn sure wasn’t functional to sleep in.

I smiled and finished my drink. I didn’t need to worry about tomorrow or yesterday. Right now, I just needed to worry about the lady calling me to bed and the right now. That was enough.

But damnit, Zippy deserves the win more and I would book him to win it as part of Champion having lost a few dozen steps from his peak!

I honestly don't know about this one. I went with the Four but part of me is questioning if you would have the Patriot lose in his debut match.

- I love Zippy, but I just don't see him as being ready for that kind of win yet

Six Man Tag Team Match

Thirty Minute Time Limit

Mr. Grappling, US Patriot, and Wild Red Stallion versus The Cadillac Four

- Way too early for the Cadillacs to lose, and the US Patriot is too green to make much of a difference;)

- Can't remember who the Skyscrapers are, so I'm going for the ones I know

- I seem to remember something about Trask being on his way out

Man wouldn’t it be great if Zippy somehow got a win here. What a boost, but that wouldn’t likely be a price Champion would want to pay

Nice summary for the past year. Could this be the year that CWI really takes off with Nicky Champion leading the push? Perhaps most improved in 2024?

I also saw someone do a end of year awards for CWI (in their opinion) and ended up feeling inspired to do the same, so here are the awards:

Male Wrestler of the Year: Mr. Grappling

Past Winners: Threepwood, Hangman, Deverell

Female Wrestler of the Year: Tameka Sky

Past Winners: Blake, Frost, Stone-McFly

Tag Team of the Year: Texas Express

Past Winners: Rock City Stars, Bred for Battle, San Diego Girls

Touch of Excitement: Nicky Champion (Wrestler I'm interested what you do with, either because of names, look, big star, storyline change or personal fav)

Past Winners: Tokoeka, Threepwood, Barnes

Graduate of the Year: Victor Crash (Basically just because I think he's won more)
