Cornellverse Rendering

Recommended Posts

I've just kept carrying over my picture folder from 2010 - now on it's 4th game. I'm having to update around 300 pictures, mainly importing new worker pictures from the default DB but also just catching up with name changes too. It's a small price to pay to keep my preferred pictures.

I like some of the new renders, Adam likes different ones, and he's said before that he's very fond of some of the older renders... The option is there for people to mod it as they see fit, so I don't expect the renders to become uniform.

I also tend to think of it as representative of the different production values across professional wrestling - but that works best when all companies have a uniform style, as has been said, and before too long workers move around and you have the TEW equivalent of Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid but still wearing his PSG shirt...

My whole thing when it comes to renders is if they do not make it to the game I will not say anything about them unless I like them. However, if they do end up making it into the game and I paid money for the game then it is an entirely different subject.

When all of those renders that look exactly the same, but with slight differences, showed up in the game I complained about it. I was told I had no right to complain about them because the artist put in hours worth of work into them. However, as someone who paid for a product you better believe if I am not happy with the product I am going to say something.

Honestly, those renders are not that bad. If five or six of them were to have shown up, I would not have said anything. However, when there are fifty or sixty of them showing up, then yes I am going to complain because they all look nearly exactly alike.

How is me voicing my dislike of a render that I ended up having to pay money for, any different than me voicing my dislike of something in a movie?

Now willr0ck I like your renders so this is not meant as an attack on you. This is more me growing annoyed over people telling me that I am a troll or I am toxic for saying the equivalent of, "Hey my soup is cold."

The issue is you didn't pay the renderer the $35. They made the render for free as a gift to the community and independent of the games development. So its dunking on an unpaid artist who isn't anything to do with it.

This is silly.

If a render is in the base game then it's part of the game... a game people will pay for... and, whether the renderer is paid or not, are therefore as open to comment and criticism as any other part of the game. If someone doesn't like a render that's in the game then expressing that should be no different to talking about not liking the interface or a mechanical aspect of the game.

If we were talking about re-renders posted in the forum then you may have a point (although I'd hardly call BHK1978's post "dunking" on anyone regardless of context) but he's talking about official renders that are part of a game. The idea that we shouldn't complain about or express a dislike towards part of something we've paid for because someone worked hard on it is just silly.

Personally I have no issue with the renders in the game; yes, they're inconsistent and like everyone else there's some I like more than others but the only ones that really stand out to me stand out for good reasons and honestly I'm not even sure if I'll feel the need to switch over to any re-renders even for the older and more out of place ones. But if I did have an issue then I have every right to talk about that a product that I paid for.

I think that's sort of the crux of the issue. Most of the updated renders in the game WERE renders/re-renders, posted out of the kindness of the artists in the forums. And from there were used officially, with permission I assume, but very likely unpaid. Maybe a free copy of the game at best. These aren't renders that were expressly made to be part of the game. They were fan made first and then officially incorporated.

But they're part of the game now, part of an official release, part of a product people are paying money towards and as such have to be viewed in that context. People will obviously be more forgiving about something that's free compared to something they paid for and less likely to comment in general on something that's not only optional but that you actually have to go out of your way to get rather than something that's not only default but official.

Let's say there was a re-render I truly hated; something that basically ruins a character for me for whatever reason. When that's something that's simply posted on the forums I'm just not going not download it to begin with and I'm less likely to post my critique of it at all. If that re-render ends up in the game on the other hand and I have to go out of my way to replace it then I'm far more likely to comment and critique. I'd also have to accept that the render is now official; whatever my personal head-canon says, that render is now officially what that worker looks like in C-verse lore.

You can be critical of Adam's selections (since he's the one who's produced the game/you've purchased it from - although obviously nobody has purchased it yet), without being critical of specific renders or renderers who've given up their own time and money to contribute to the game.

<p>I'm locking this thread just now, not because it's hostile, but because I want to end a circular discussion with a final word that needs no response and I don't want it to get lost in the shuffle, whether people agree with it or not.</p><p> </p><p>

This thread has shown that people have different opinions. Some people want a more consistent art style while others are happy to pick and choose. Some people believe they have the right to state opinions on a product even after they pay for it, some believe that you get what you pay for. Some people want a wider range of alternates to be included by defaults, some people would rather have a smaller more manageable list to start with. Some people want specific renders to be updated, while some people don't want change because they already associate a specific image with someone and change would feel wrong.</p><p> </p><p>

Basically... preferences.</p><p> </p><p>

We all have them. There's no need to argue about them. And there's no way to keep everyone happy. It's impossible to try. Tailor things to your own preferences as you wish and respect those of others. Easy as that. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>
