NXT 2021- A New Era of Pro Wrestling

January 2021

In the year 2020, the dreaded CoVid-19 virus completely changed the world. All sports at all levels were effectively shut down for the majority of the year. UFC and professional wrestling tried to run shows, but even they ended up being shut down completely for the last half of 2020. Because of this, several promotions in Europe and Japan did not reopen. When New Japan Pro Wrestling tried to reopen in Japan, they weren't allowed to. They were told to either move somewhere else or fold. Since they already had a following in the United States, New Japan moved their home offices to Los Angeles, California. Promotions in Mexico and Canada, including Impact Wrestling, were allowed to restart with no restrictions. All pro wrestling companies in the United States were allowed to continue. This left the pro wrestling world with just 27 active companies, all in North America.

Back in the United States, the WWE continued to struggle. With the addition of New Japan Pro Wrestling, along with the surge of All Elite Wrestling, WWE owner Vincent Kennedy McMahon knew that things had to change. He had already lost a ton of money with WWE struggling, as well as another failed attempt with the XFL. He was despondent and carefree. On Christmas Day, 2020, Vince called his daughter Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, and her husband, Triple H. "I only have one Christmas present for you this year. Stephanie...Hunter.. I give you the WWE." And just like that, the shape of the pro wrestling world had changed. World Wrestling Entertainment was now being ran by Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley and "The Game" Triple H.

Because of this, NXT needed new leadership. Triple H knew he would not be able to perform his new duties as head booker of WWE, as well as running NXT. He needed to find a new owner.

Press Conference With New NXT Owner

My name is Mike Schaplowsky, and I am the new owner of NXT. Who the hell am I, you ask? Well, I have been watching pro wrestling since I was 5 years old. I've seen the good and the bad. Now, I know that the news media is going crazy that an unknown was given this position instead of someone established, but I can safely say that Mrs. McMahon Helmsley and Mr. Triple H wouldn't have hired me if they weren't 100% confident I could do the job. Now, I have time for just a couple questions today, and then Mr. Triple H will take a couple questions. *looks around* yes, you in the white polo.

Reporter: Surely you must realize the overwhelming challenge that this is going to be? This isn't a video game like Total Extreme Wrestling or GM Mode in WWE 2K. This is the real thing. What makes you think someone that has never been in the wrestling business can handle this?

Me: Look, the pro wrestling world has changed. New Japan is now based in California. NXT:UK is now based in Connecticut. North America is the only continent that has professional wrestling companies right now. There's a lot of changes. Now is the time for unpredictability. Why not let someone like me take the reigns? I still have guys like Shawn Michaels, Terry Taylor, Road Dogg, Nigel McGuinness, just to name a few. I'll be fine.

Reporter: Do you plan to make any changes to NXT as far as the product? I know that your hands are tied as far as your roster, but have the new WWE bosses given you reign to tweak the product?

Me: At this time, NXT is still what it is, a developmental product. Mrs. McMahon-Helmsley and Mr. Triple H are not letting me change the product in any way. I realize as far as the roster goes, this is the equivalent of a minor league baseball franchise. I have to work with the roster that the parent club provides and that's fine. This is a work in progress. Things could be bumpy for a while. Nobody knows how this is going to play out. Worst case scenario.. well let's not even think about a worst case scenario, because I'm confident in my abilities. *at this point Mrs. McMahon-Helmsley whispers something in my ear* Sorry guys, that's it for today. I have to go to a corporate meeting, meet the NXT roster and staff, and start booking my first show.

NXT Roster

I am not going to reveal the starting roster, because you will get to see everybody eventually anyways, and it's probably going to be changing quite a bit. I will say that I have turned the face/heel divide off, because I have a lot of stuff planned that the face/heel divide doesn't work for, and quite honestly, I don't buy into that face/heel stuff anymore. The fans are gonna choose who they want to cheer for, regardless of whether they are a face or a heel.

Prediction Contests!

I will have 2 separate prediction contests every single year. January-June and July-December. The prizes for the prediction contests will be the same every year. For the January-June prediction contest, the top 6 or 8 (depending on how many regular predictors I get) will compete in a Team Challenge Series, which I will explain later. The prize for the July-December prediction contest is still to be determined, but I have some ideas.

Normally, my writing style will be to just quick recap the regular shows, and do a more detailed recap of the events or PPVs, whatever you want to call them. I plan on eventually having 1 a month, so of course that would be 6 shows worth of predictions. However.. I will be doing something special for the next few in-game weeks (more on that just a bit later), and I have not scheduled any events, just the weekly NXT show. So for the first few in-game weeks, I will allow you guys to predict the NXT shows, and they will count in this first prediction contest. The key is to get those predictions in ASAP. I will usually allow 48-72 hours give or take after I announce a show, before I run it. Hopefully this will generate plenty of interest.

Breaking News

New NXT owner Mike Schaplowsky has made his first big, and quite drastic, move as NXT owner. He has vacated ALL NXT titles and will have tournaments for all the title belts. "Everything is a fresh start. We haven't ran a show for a few weeks, so why not start from scratch?" In addition, Schaplowsky has announced that every active wrestler on the roster will get a chance to compete for a title. "When NXT was first developed, it was done so with the purpose of giving someone a contract. NXT has always been the land of opportunity, so it is only fair to give everybody on the roster an opportunity."

It is being said that all tournament brackets will be decided by a random draw. "It's the only fair way to start, in my humble opinion. I know this move will get backlash, but I really don't care. If people don't like it, they don't have to watch." The tournaments will take place on future episodes of NXT, with the first big event/PPV under the Schaplowsky regime to be called NXT Takeover: Championship Night. The date of that event is TBD. Mr. Schaplowsky will be working on setting up the tournament brackets tomorrow and Friday. "I can tell you we have 21 active women wrestlers on the roster. There will essentially be 5 qualifying matches to make a 16 woman tournament, which will then be the 2020 Mae Young Classic. This will obviously be the easiest tournament to schedule."

As far as the men, it gets a little tougher. "We have to take into account the NXT Tag Team Titles, and the NXT Cruiserweight Title. We will have 8 teams competing in the NXT Tag Team Title Tournament, which will be the 2020 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. In the future, both the Mae Young Classic and the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will be held in the first half of each year, with the Mae Young Classic becoming an 8 woman tournament."

So with 16 male wrestlers off the board, what about the rest? "Obviously some of our male wrestlers, like Keith Lee, Damien Priest, they obviously don't qualify for the NXT Cruiserweight Title, so they will be in the draw for the NXT Title and NXT North American Title Tournament. We do have several wrestlers that could compete for all 3 of the singles titles. Adam Cole is an example."

It is not known exactly how many wrestlers will be in the NXT Title Tournament, the NXT North American Title Tournament, or the NXT Cruiserweight Title Tournament. "Tomorrow is going to be a busy day, for sure. It might take me all day to do the drawings for the tournaments, but my hope is to have the drawing all done tomorrow so that I can announce the brackets on Friday."

Times are definitely changing in NXT. The land of opportunity is there. Will anybody step up and create a monumental upset? Or will the favorites of each tournament win? It will be very intriguing to see how the brackets play out. With a random draw, we could have a First Round match-up like Adam Cole-Keith Lee right off the bat. Schaplowsky was asked about having some of the tournament matches as dark matches before NXT starts on Wednesday nights. "Absolutely. If we have a tournament match-up between 2 men, or women, that aren't as over, we won't waste tv time for it. Let's see how the brackets play out. After the drawings are complete, then I have to decide which matches go on which show."

New NXT owner Mike Schaplowsky is about to reveal the 2021 Mae Young Classic Bracket. It will be a 21 woman bracket, and the winner of this tournament will also become the new NXT Woman's Champion. Remember, Schaplowsky vacated all NXT titles when he took over the company. Here is a look at the bracket, which was done by a complete random draw.

In other news, Schaplowsky has decided on the numbers for the other tournaments. the NXT Tag Team Tournament, which will also double as the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will have the standard 8 teams, although 3 of those teams are still to be determined. Teams that have already entered the field include Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly, Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne, Chase Parker and Matt Martel, Arturo Ruas and Cezar Bononi, and Sunil and Samir Singh.

The NXT Title Tournament, NXT North American Title Tournament, and NXT Cruiserweight Tournament will each have 12 wrestlers. As there are several wrestlers on the roster who can legally compete for all 3 of those titles, Mr. Schaplowsky will have the drawing for the NXT Cruiserweight Title Tournament first. After those 12 men are selected, the other 24 will go into the drawing for the NXT North American Title Tournament and the NXT Title Tournament. Those drawings, again, completely random (they really are) will all take place yet today. Stay tuned!

This weeks edition of NXT spotlights first round matches in the NXT Cruiserweight Tournament and the Mae Young Classic. Undisputed Era is in the ring.

"So the Undisputed Era understands there's a new sheriff in town. You can take all the titles away from us, but the fact remains, until somebody me".. *crowd chants* ADAM COLE BAYBAY! "I am the rightful NXT Champion."

"Adam, I have no doubt you will get the title back where it belongs. In fact, all the titles will be back where they belong! This new change in ownership gives me and Kyle a shot to get our NXT Tag Team Titles back. We are the best tag team in NXT."

"Hold on there Bobby. Hey you and Kyle are a great tag team, but you know me and Adam make a pretty good team as well."

"Roddy, Roddy, we have this all worked out, remember? You'll get the North American Title back, Bobby and I will get the tag titles back, and Adam will get NXT Title back. We will then be in total domination again, just like it should be."

NXT GM William Regal shows up on the Titan Tron.

"Gentlemen, gentlemen, have you learned nothing from your time in NXT? Things aren't always as they seem. With that being said, it's time to reveal the NXT Title Tournament brackets."

*the crowd murmurs, and the UE look disgusted.*

"What are you trying to pull Regal? We know you haven't liked us from Day One!"

"Did you not get the memo that the brackets were being done by random draw? You were not drawn for the NXT Title Tournament. Which surely means you'll be in the NXT North American Title Tournament with Roderick Strong. Let's look at those brackets:

With no Cole and no Strong in the bracket, the UE look ready to explode.

"Regal, I swear to god, I don't know what's going on, but you better have a damn good explanation for this!"

The crowd erupts with seeing Cole and Strong teamed up in the tag tournament, but Fish and O'Reilly look less than pleased.

"This is bull! Regal, this is bull and you know it. You're trying to drive a wedge in between us, but we aren't going to let it happen!"

"Perhaps instead of getting mad at me, you should talk to Mr. Cole. After all, it was his idea for he and Roderick to enter the tournament as a tag team. Now, gentlemen, it looks like you have some things to sort out. Oh yes, one last thing. The 2 mystery teams, they will be revealed next week on NXT. Have fun gentlemen."

Fish and O'Reilly look at Cole and Strong asking if this is true.

"Hey, nothing personal guys. But who wouldn't want a chance to enter a tag team tournament named after one of the greatest wrestlers ever. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up. It's simple, you win your side of the bracket, we win ours, we meet in the finals, and the Undisputed Era is guaranteed gold."

"Let's go boys, we got work to do to make sure it happens just the way Roddy said it will."

Cole and Strong leave the ring with Fish and O'Reilly sulking behind them, not happy campers.

I would love to run that exact same show on TEW 2016 and see what the ratings would have been. I had heard that TEW 2020 was a much tougher game to play, but WOW! I didn't expect ratings that bad. The good news is, in the grand scheme of this dynasty, I really don't care about ratings, because I have no owner goals and I know NXT is really nothing more than a developmental company. I'm booking NXT for fun, not to try and become the best company. Right now all the broadcasters except for WWE Network are unhappy. So be it. There are other options. As long as NXT can remain on WWE Network where there is no minimum rating to get, I'll be fine.

2 things that really bug me are that the NXT crowd were unhappy at seeing so many wrestlers, and for every angle, I got a "nothing interesting happened." So I guess I need to at least figure out those 2 things. Really though, I'm not overly concerned with the show or segment ratings, it's about the booking, the stories, etc.

This will be my new format for all the NXT shows. I haven't decided how I will handle the format for NXT Takeovers. They will be more detailed of course, but I'm not sure exactly how much more. Thoughts and opinions?

I had heard that TEW 2020 was a much tougher game to play, but WOW! I didn't expect ratings that bad. The good news is, in the grand scheme of this dynasty, I really don't care about ratings, because I have no owner goals and I know NXT is really nothing more than a developmental company. I'm booking NXT for fun, not to try and become the best company. Right now all the broadcasters except for WWE Network are unhappy. So be it. There are other options. As long as NXT can remain on WWE Network where there is no minimum rating to get, I'll be fine. 2 things that really bug me are that the NXT crowd were unhappy at seeing so many wrestlers, and for every angle, I got a "nothing interesting happened." So I guess I need to at least figure out those 2 things. Really though, I'm not overly concerned with the show or segment ratings, it's about the booking, the stories, etc. This will be my new format for all the NXT shows. I haven't decided how I will handle the format for NXT Takeovers. They will be more detailed of course, but I'm not sure exactly how much more. Make sure you have at least one worker rated on ENTERTAINMENT or FIGHTING. People don't just want to look at wrestlers. They want them to actively do something. As for the crowd dumping all over the wrestlers because they don't know who they are, this is unfortunately the reality of TEW2020 and the reason I am not buying it. I have not been to a show since the early 2000s where a crowd have been vocal about hating a wrestler, just because they don't know who they are. This just wouldn't happen. Sadly, you will not get a decent rating in 2020, due to this limitation.

Thanks for the info, very good to know. I will look to make that adjustment going forward and make sure my angles don't just have people rated on overness.

I understand that TEW2020 isn't appealing to a lot of people because of some of the flaws, but overall, I find it to be a better game than TEW2016. If I was someone that cared about ratings more, I'd probably be more upset, but as I mentioned, ultimately this dynasty is about me putting things together, not so much the ratings. If ratings become an issue, there's always the editor. But I'm more about the booking and the writing of my dynasty.

The 2 mystery teams for the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic have been decided and added to the bracket. Here is a look at the entire bracket.

Mustache Mountain are coming over from NXT:UK, but it is not known if this is a permanent deal or just short term. Raven and Sean Waltman are a definite surprise, as new NXT owner Mike Schaplowsky is thinking outside the box on this one, but both men have a lot of experience and definitely can cause a few upsets in this tournament.
