WCW 1995: Prime Time

Ted Turner, head of TBS, has been in the process of a potential merger with Time Warner, which is looking to be more of a sure thing every day. While this merger would include the acquisition of all TBS properties, including World Championship Wrestling, something different has come to light.

Turner: "Good morning everyone. Let me cut right to it. We have an offer for WC…”

Before Ted could finish his sentence, various board members jumped up in excitement. WCW has been an embarrassment to TBS. Well, to everyone but Ted himself.

Scott Sass: "This is fantastic! Finally, we can be done with wrestling!”

You see, no one at TBS wanted wrestling on their program but Ted. Despite opposing it every time it was brought up in any way, Ted always stood firm on wrestling remaining on TBS.

Turner: “I’m not selling WCW, Scott. We own a wrestling company. We should be pulling the numbers that Vince is on USA Network.”

Scott, his face dulling from Ted’s comments, sits back down in his chair.

Scott: “You’ve got wrestling on TBS, Ted”

Ted leans forward in his chair and looks Scott in the eyes.

Ted: “Yes, but we need more.”

Scott: “Well, we have your program on Saturday nights. We could back that show up an hour maybe.”

Ted: “No, Scott. We need to hit a homerun. We need to aim higher and stop playing it safe. Eric? What do we need to do to be competitive with Vince and the WWF?”

Eric Bischoff, feeling a lump in his throat leans forward with nervous eyes.

Bischoff: “Well Ted, I think we need to have prime time.”

A couple TBS executives chuckle, including Sass. However, Turner leans back in his chair, grabs a pen off the table, narrows his eyes and points the pen at Bischoff.

Turner: “Prime time. It’s lofty. It’s aggressive, I like it.”

Sass: “Ted, are you sure you want to put WCW on prime time on TBS? I mean…”

Turner holds up his hand as he stands up.

Turner: “I’m sure about prime time, Scott. However, it’s not going to be on TBS. It’s going to be on TNT.

Sass, beside himself, stands up, then slowly sits down after Turner gives him a look that would cut through titanium.

Turner: “The decision to have WCW on prime time on TNT is final. Moving on, we need to discuss some additional changes.

Sass: “What kind of changes, Ted?”

Turner: “We need to be sure the right people are in the right places to make WCW a success on prime time.”

Bischoff takes a sip of water.

Bischoff: “Ted, we have all the talent to make this not only happen, but succeed.”

Turner begins slowly walking around the conference room table nodding.

Turner: “Yes, yes. Eric, you have an idea for a show for prime time, don’t you? Tell me about your announcer choices for this show.”

Bischoff: “Well, Ted. We have Bobby Heenan, who I think would be a great addition to a prime time show. We’d want to have someone different as well. A three man team ideal, with me leading”

Turner stops his walk.

Turner: “You back on commentary? Why? Don’t you have an excellent commentator on our TBS program?”

Bischoff: “Yes, but we’d want someone out there to take the lead and drive the show’s narrative.”

Turner: “And you believe that is you”

Bischoff: “Yes, I do”.

Turner: The problem, Eric, is that your vision of WCW’s victory over Vince McMahon is with you leading the show. From my understanding, it’s about you, not WCW. That means that you’re in business for yourself, not me, Eric.”

Bischoff: “No, Ted…”

Turner: “I understand, Eric, but I need someone who can take WCW to the next step. I don’t want the Eric Bischoff show, I want WCW.”

Bischoff: “Yes, Ted. That is…”

Turner: “Eric, effective immediately, you are hereby terminated from World Championship Wrestling.”

Bischoff turns pale

Turner: “Marie has your papers at her desk on the way our, Eric. Thank you for taking us this far, but you have reached your ceiling.

Bischoff, completely white and sucked completely dry of life, gets up and walks out of the conference room.

Turner sits back down at this chair.

Turner: “Now. We have someone within WCW who was there when I purchased it thirteen years ago. He briefly left, but returned and has been loyal ever since. Not only can he take WCW to new heights, but he can take WCW to #1. Because, we’re going against Vince. Prime time on Mondays.”

Ted is not only known for his bold decision making, but sticking to his decisions. His decision is stacking the deck against "his boys", especially at a time where he's about to merge with Time Warner. Guy live on the edge.

Luger hits the ring and helps Hogan, Sting and Savage clear the ring before some arguing about what Lex is doing there begins between the members of The Hulkamaniacs.

Randy Savage (pointing a finger right in Luger's face): LOOK AT THOSE EYES! I DON'T LIKE IT ONE BIT! Like a snake working it's way into a hen house and you know how to stop a snake? YOU CUT OFF IT'S HEAD OOOOOOH YEAHHHH!

Sting (trying to get between Savage and Luger): Hold on hold on...

Lex Luger: No Stinger, it's fine. If the Macho Man has doubts, maybe we can settle it in the ring next week.

Randy Savage: WHY WAIT when we can settle it right now!

Hulk Hogan: Alright Luger. You can prove yourself next week against the Macho Man, brother.

Mean Gene: Alright! Next week, Randy Savage vs....Lex Luger!</div>

Tony Schiavone, Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and Steve 'Mongo' McMichael welcome everyone to WCW Monday Nitro, live from the sold out Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis!

Tony Schiavone: Tonight, we'll see Lex Luger face Randy Savage in the main event.

Bobby Heenan: That's right, Schiavone! Tonight, we see Luger's true colors as he stabs Hulkamania in the back!

Steve McMichael: What are you talking about, Heenan? Luger is a stand-up guy and he's out to prove himself.

Bobby Heenan: Wha...have you taken too many hits to the head? Savage as a right to be nervous. Lex Luger, shows up out of no where and just claims he's one of the good guys? I don't think so, Tony!

The American Males vs. Bunkhouse Buck & 'Dirty' Dick Slater w/Col. Robert Parker

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but embarrassing wrestling, Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater defeated The American Males in 9:45 when Bunkhouse Buck pinned Scotty Riggs after a running boot to the side of the head.

Col. Parker is shown downplaying Sister Sherri and her hold on him as the champs leave the ring.

Mean Gene: Tony, there's tension between these two and I'm looking forward to talking to them, Arn Anderson and 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair.

Arn Anderson: Gene, when you're at the top of the mountain, people like to talk, you see? They talk because they want you to fall. The Enforcer and the Nature Boy have been doing this too long to fall off the top of the mountain, and we can put the rumors of tension away.

Mean Gene: Well Double A, you may be right but there is talk about the Four...

Ric Flair: Mean....by God...Gene! Wooo! There's always talk when you're out here stylin' and profilin' and wheelin' and dealin'! Wooo! Double A. The Enforcer, Arn Anderson, says there is no tension, and there isn't! Wooo!

Mean Gene: (as Anderson and Flair walk away, with Flair 'woo'ing' to the crowd the whole way up the Monday Nitro Ramp) Well Tony, it seems everything is good and we can lay these rumors aside. Cobra vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/Diamond Doll and Maxx Muscle

In a bout that had little heat and embarrassing wrestling, Diamond Dallas Page defeated Cobra in 6:30 by pinfall with a Diamond Cutter.

As we return from commercial break, we fade from black into a smokey dungeon of some kind...

The Master: Sullivan! Sullivan! Hulkamania has a new ally that we need to ensure comes to the Dungeon of Doom! Sullivan! Hulkamania cannot continue!

The Taskmaster: I will ensure Hulkamania is ended once and for all at Fall Brawl. Hogan, your time in the spotlight is counting down. As for tonight, plan are already in motion. The end of Hulkamania!

Mean Gene: Bobby, I'm sure you have something to do with ending Hulkamania, and we can discuss that at a later time. Right now, I am joined by 'The Macho Man', Randy Savage!

Macho Man: I FEEL IT...yes I feel it, tonight I'm going to expose Lex Luger for the snake he is and when I'm done he can JOIN THE DUNGEON OF DOOM...and I'll take my time with him in War Games OOOOOOH YEAH!

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Randy Savage defeated Lex Luger in 14:19 via DQ when the Dungeon of Doom hit the ring attacking Savage.

As the Dungeon of Doom beat down Savage, The Taskmaster corners Luger and appears to be offering him a peace offering. As Zodiac and The Shark pick up Savage and hold him up for Luger to take a free shot, Luger looks around the arena to a mixed reaction from fans. Suddenly, Luger nails The Taskmaster and the crowd erupts for a moment before the rest of the Dungeon of Doom jump Luger. Hulk Hogan and Sting hit the ring to help Savage and Luger rid the ring of the Dungeon of Doom, sending the crowd into a frenzy. As Tony Schiavone begins signing off, we see Lex Luger and Randy Savage shake hands in the ring as we fade to black
