World Championship Wrestling 91': Dusty's Return and Revenge! [RW]

In the mid-to-late '80s, Dusty Rhodes was the booker of Jim Crockett Promotions and led the company through financial difficulties to prosperous summers and back to financial difficulties. After poor financial management (primarily due to enjoying a life of luxury and 'treating the boys' in a manner that he couldn't afford to keep up) and a failure to realise that he wasn't going to compete with Vince McMahon's WWF, Jim Crockett Jr. sold JCP to Ted Turner in late '88 for 9 million dollars. Crockett's services were retained in the company and he was kept on the booking team but his ideas were never used,

In the transition, the booking ping-ponged between Dusty Rhodes and Ole Anderson. Despite each man's great success at being able to book regionally, neither seemed able to figure out how to book for a 'national' promotion. Or at least one that intended to go national. As the year wore on, tensions rose backstage in the newly named World Championship Wrestling. Dusty Rhodes was fired after an incident at Starrcade 88' where he intentionally got colour in an angle with the Road Warriors. He did this at a time when it was explicitly stated by Turner Executives that you weren't to bleed on screen. Perhaps Dusty was protesting something but, either way, he was fired from the company. He had a very brief run back in Florida before joining Vince McMahon's WWF. Dusty was a household name. The name itself would sell out arenas. But he was known as the man who was booking against VKM and when he joined the WWF, there was an opportunity for rebranding or humiliation, depending on which side of the war you lie on. Dusty went from a double-denim wearing ass-kicker to a polka-dot wearing, goofy 'common man'. Many believe the gimmick was intended to humiliate Dusty but Dusty didn't let it bother him and made it work. He was paired with a 55-year-old stereotypically sassy black woman named Sapphire, and the two were off to the races. The gimmick wasn't the first time that Vince took a perceived shot at Dusty. In 1987, WWF introduced the man-servant character of Ted DiBiase, Virgil, who was so named because Dusty's real-life first name was Virgil.

During Dusty's time away from WCW, Ole Anderson was placed in charge of booking and 1989 proved a very good year for WCW. Arguably, the greatest year they had experienced to date with Flair and Steamboat engaging in a feud, Sting and The Great Muta feuding and Lex Luger rising to prominence. It wasn't all perfect, obviously. Remember the Ding-Dongs? But 1989 was a good year. 1990, however, saw WCW back to the old ways of JCP and worse. Ole Anderson was notorious for pushing himself and his old friends to the top card while letting younger talent stagnate and that's just what happened. Ole split the company on house shows into two groups: A's and B's. The A house shows would feature wrestlers that Ole felt deserved pushes like The Iron Sheik and The Junkyard Dog. The B show would feature the undercard talent like Brian Pillman, Ron Simmons and Tom Zenk and the B show would outdraw the A show almost every time, much to the annoyance of Ole. Ole also ran WCW to a loss of almost 7million dollars for the year. The year of 1990 was capped off with The Black Scorpion gimmick and if that wasn't to end Ole's tenure, nothing would. Ole had not done well in 1990 and was removed from his position after Starrcade!

Dusty's time at WWF was coming to an end and he was approached by WCW for a return as booker but he was given one condition. Dusty had been known in the past for primarily booking himself on top and having storylines revolve around himself so he would only be back in the company as booker if he wouldn't perform as an in-ring talent. Dusty agreed to that condition on a condition of his own: He was allowed to bring his son Dustin with him from the WWF.

The deal was agreed and here we are at the beginning of 1991. Dusty, a man who may or may not have been seen to be humiliated by Vince McMahon, was now back in charge of creative for Vince's biggest rival with an interesting array of talent available to him. Some are future stars. Some are current duds. Can Dusty put his ego aside for the benefit of WCW and the business and stick it to Vince? Or will the doubters be proven correct? Dusty's old habits come back and WCW continues to suffer its downturn of fortunes?

A/N:

So, unfortunately, a combination of losing steam and a corrupted file has resulted in me giving up on my Mid Atlantic Wrestling: The Sam Keith Saga dynasty. I was thoroughly enjoying it and thank you all for reading along and predicting but this has been an idea I've had for a while and the issues with my MAW save have allowed this to come to fruition.

I'm a huge Dusty Rhodes mark. My all-time top 3 are Jericho, Dusty and Piper. 1991 was a weird time for the business and Dusty returning to WCW as booker was and wasn't a silly idea. Anyway, there'll be predictions running. I hope to be able to tell an interesting enough story through the diary to compensate for the lack of graphical prowess. The weekly shows will take the form of shorter write-ups and the Clashes and PPV's will be fleshed out with worker pics and more detail etc. I'm not entirely sure if I'll write pieces from the perspective of Dusty but he's my UC for the save.

If you swing by, I hope you enjoy the ride and hopefully this one lasts a good while longer than previous efforts. I'm certainly excited about it anyway. Props as always go to people like Historian, The Final Countdown, The Lloyd, Eisen-Verse, Angeldelayette whose diaries always are of exceptional quality and I've read almost all of their previous and current efforts. Everyone who does a diary on the board deserves props and views as it is a lot of work and effort but these people always seem to make it seem easy enough that people like me go:

"Pssh, I can do that as well..." and then I usually go down in flames. Some of them have teams behind them but still, it's such... good... shit!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by folks. Roster pages and show pages etc. will be fleshed out in the future and once I get some college work out of the way, we'll bring up the first match card.

Must do better at keeping back-ups. Hope you'll continue to drop in on this one also.</p>

<p>Good luck mate! Enjoyed the MAW game. Nothing wrong with starting fresh (I did the same and I'm having tons more fun!) and picking something you enjoy!</p><p> </p><p>

Wasn't alive in 91 but I'm a Sting mark and I've watched his whole championship run from then!</p>

Looking forward to seeing how you book characters compared to me. We may have completely different opinions on wrestlers like Tom Zenk.....maybe...

Thanks. Yeah, the TV shows will be getting more of a simple write-up, like how I did my shortlived WCW97' save a few years back and then PPVs will be fleshed out with worker pics etc. Pillman is an exceptional talent, even in 91'. Everyone should have big plans for him... As for Zenk. I never saw the appeal but he's solid in the ring and the ladies love him. We'll see.

Chuffed to see a fellow Dusty, lover! It was a weird time for WCW. A definite transitional period.

Koloff is still active but hadn't done much around here. He was a force of nature in JCP, though. Maybe he'll appear.

Show should be up later tonight if there's any more predictions.

Brian Pillman vs Larry Zybyszko (15-minute time limit)

Comments:Out of the gate? Larry. Down the road, I can see Pillman going over.

Sting vs Bobby Eaton (Non-Title - 20-minute time limit)

Comments: This would be an epic match. Don't believe I've ever seen a match between Sting and Eaton. Eaton was severely underrated.

The Juicer for every single title.

Art Barr is awesome. Was underrated. A little peek behind the scenes:

I've been trying to sign Eddie Guerrero (love Eddie!)and bring him in under his Black Tiger mask and gimmick and name them Tiger Juice.

Spoiler... Negotiations didn't go well.

Like the show mate. You managed to get some really god grades without using too much TV time and overexposing your top acts. Eaton is a stud!

Looking forward to the next one.

Thank you, sir. The roster is in an interesting spot. I usually stick by the vision of not over exposing the big stars on TV, at least in ring. You want to make the fans pay big money to see your.big stars wrestle.

Eaton is an exceptional talent. Always was. Works well with anybody. There's a plan for him.

From Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama

Attendance; 4,514

Announce Team; Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone & Magnum T.A

Segment 1;

- The announce team open and hype the broadcast. Put over a night of action featuring Lex Luger, Big Van Vader and The Steiners (77)

Segment 2; Ricky Morton vs Butch Reed (15-minute time limit)

- Butch Reed was in fine form last week in tag-team action but a singles match-up against Ricky Morton poses a different threat entirely.

- Morton may be a tag team specialist but he's no slouch in singles competition and it showed here. Reed kept up the heel heat but Morton fired-up, completed his comeback and pinned one-half of the World Tag Team champions.

Winner; Ricky Morton (61)

Segment 3;

- Ric Flair & AA in the Danger Zone with Paul E. Flair grabs the microphone.

- "Stinger, you and I know, the whole world knows, that you got lucky at Starrcade last month. If you're the fighting face of WCW. The Champion of WCW that you say you are... you'll face the Nature Boy at Clash of The Champions! Woo!" (83)

Segments 4 & 5; Big Van Vader vs Pat Rose (15-minute time limit)

- Poor Pat Rose. With his current momentum, we should feel sorry for anybody who has to come up against Big Van Vader. 3 minutes was all this one took.

Winner; Big Van Vader (48)

POST-MATCH

- Harley Race steps into the ring with a microphone and stands alongside Vader. Lifts the mic to his face.

"Stan Hansen. Clash Of The Champions!"

- Nothing else needs to be said.(70)

Segments 6 & 7; The Master Blasters vs The Renegade Warriors (15-minute time limit)

- A short tag-team match here between two teams looking to pick up some momentum.

- Mark Youngblood lands the Flying Tomohawk on Blade to end this one.

Winners; The Renegade Warriors (38)

POST-MATCH

- The Renegade Warriors celebrate in the ring as The Master Blasters walk back up the rampway. They stand at the entrance. Both look dejected. They give a simple fist bump to each other and both walk off separately.(31)

Segment 8;

- Promo package for WCW's Sexiest Wrestler competition.

- The package has footage mixed with a video package of Paul E. Dangerously. Paul E. looks 'dashing' in a couple of posed photos in a smart suit with his cell phone. The package ends with the tagline "Vote Paul E. for Sexiest Wrestler"

- The video ends as Missy & Paul E. are stood together. Missy bursts into a fit of giggles. Paul E. looks annoyed at her response and storms off the set. Missy finishes the promotion.

(68)

Segment 9; Mark Kyle vs Barry Windham (15-minute time limit)

- Mark Kyle was facing a difficult challenge here that not many would envy.

- Windham looks in good form as he puts away Kyle with relative ease.

Winner; Barry Windham (57)

Segments 10, 11 & 12;

PRE-MATCH

- Dusty Rhodes walks out onto the stage to a 'pop' from the Alabama audience. He gives a hyped introduction to his son, Dustin Rhodes! (71)

'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton vs Dustin Rhodes (15-minute time limit)

- Rhodes isn't a rookie by any means but he's not nearly as experienced as 'Beautiful' Bobby. This didn't matter though as for strong portions of the match, Rhodes had Eaton on the proverbial ropes.

- Dusty watched on from ringside looking as only a proud father can. He never get involved even when Eaton started resorting to dirty tactics.

- We moved to the 13-minute mark as Eaton became increasingly concerned at not exiting this match with the victory. Eye pokes and back rakes were called upon but Dustin just kept coming.

- The crowd rallied behind Rhodes as Eaton tried to keep him down. He fired-up for the comeback and 'popped' the crowd but Eaton somehow managed to get a roll-up on the youngster. A quick hold of the tights for leverage, that the ref missed, secured the 3 count

Winner; 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton (64)

POST MATCH

- Cheers turn to boo's as Eaton narrowly escapes with the tainted victory. He looks utterly baffled at how Dustin managed to give him so much trouble. He helps the kid up to his feet and extends a hand. Dustin takes Eaton's hand but it was a ruse as Bobby swiftly kicked Dustin in the knee, bringing him to his knees, and then slapped him across the face. He quickly fled the ring as Dusty rushed in to make the save, (70)

Segment 13; Jimmy Garvin vs Scott Steiner (15-minute time limit)

- The crowd were excited about this one. An appetizer to the upcoming title match at Clash of The Champions.

- For 11:54 seconds of this match, both guys laid in their shots and gave as good as they got.

- An altercation in the corner resulted in the ref being knocked to the mat. Steiner recovered quickest. Put a few boots to Garvin and posed for the crowd but was quickly cut off as DDP spun him around and planted Scott with a Diamond Cutter.

- Jimmy stood back up. Planted Steiner with the Bombs Away! and covered him as the ref recovered and made the 3 count. Once he did, Garvin & Page ran off together up the ramp.

Winner; Jimmy Garvin (63)

Segment 14;

- A hype video package plays hyping House Shows and the upcoming Clash Of The Champions. Sting vs Ric Flair is officially announced for the show. (83)

Segments 15 & 16; 'Flying' Brian Pillman & Lex Luger vs Larry Zybyzsko & Sid Vicious (20-minute time limit)

- Larry seemingly loaned a Horseman for the evening to help him in this tag-team contest against his previous opponent and his next one.

- The crowd were hot for this contest and really rallied around the babyface duo of Luger & Pillman.

- Sid & Larry seemed to really click working together despite their inexperience as a duo. Sid looked as menacing as ever and spent a good portion of the match rag rolling Pillman around the ring.

- We hit the 14-minute mark as the crowd were very vocal trying to fire up Luger & Pillman. It worked as they mounted an impressive comeback to put the heels on their... well, heels. Flyin' Brian, mounted the ropes and looked to connect with an Air Pillman but missed Sid and instead caught Luger which left the US Champion dazed.

- Zybyzsko clotheslined Pillman back over the ropes to the outside as Vicious lifted Luger for 2 brutal-looking powerbombs and getting the pinfall to the shock of the crowd.

Winners; Sid Vicious & Larry Zybyzsko (65)

POST MATCH

- Sid exits the ring and picks up Luger's US title before re-entering the ring.

- Larry extends a hand out, either looking to shake hands with Vicious or get the title from him as he has the title shot. Sid slaps his hand away and walks away with the title but before he crosses the ropes, he throws it towards Larry. The Living Legend goes to catch it but can see Luger & Pillman beginning to recover and rising to their feet so he quickly rolls out under the ropes and catches up to Sid on the ramp as they walk off together... at least according to Larry. (69)

End show.

Final Show Rating; 71

That's a really good show mate.

Whilst mine may be mixing storylines from nowadays with wrestlers from back then, yours in pure 91 WCW, which is great. It makes it different from mine and really authentic.

Especially enjoying what you're doing with Bobby Eaton

Looking forward to more!
