PSP: Drake's Adventure

Recommended Posts

Ahoy there, mateys! Batten down the hatches and stock up on rum - a brand new swashbuckling adventure has come to the UK on the Sound Network!

Plymouth Sound Productions is an entirely cinematic wrestling production that draws inspiration from Plymouth's naval history, combining larger-than-life characters with high-impact, brawl-based wrestling.

Frankie Drake, descendant of the legendary Sir Francis Drake has always loved wrestling. His mother's dying wish was that Frankie do something to keep the Drake legacy going. His best friend from university, Henry Gaspard, is the son of multimillionaire owner of Queen's Yachts, Julian Gaspard. Henry wants to impress his father by running an innovative and profitable company and sees potential in Frankie's vision of a new form of wrestling. Establishing the Sound Network, the two are determined to produce the highest quality action and storytelling, the like of which nobody has seen before.

Important

This Diary is NOT:

  • A typical wrestling diary

  • Historically accurate

  • Everyone's cup of tea (especially if your name is Jim Cornette)

Information

This is a cinematic action adventure that uses the structure of wrestling angles and matches as a foundation, but exists outside of the typical wrestling show format.

- There are no rings - matches are all filmed on location.

- There are rarely any crowds *

- There are no referees *

- There are no "rules"

- There are no announcers *

- There are no match announcements

- There are no bells at the start or end of matches

- There are no entrances or entrance music *

*Technically these things exist because of the game, but they are not recognised in the diary.

What is there, then?

Things that you will recognise from standard wrestling include:

- "Matches" where two competitors/teams fight

- Prizes won by the winner of a "match"

- Angles in which characters are developed

- Moves and weapons

- Factions

- Stories.

I understand that this diary will not be for everyone. You could argue that it steps too far outside of wrestling to even be called wrestling anymore, however it is played in the C-Verse (with the addition of 2 characters) in the TEW 2020 game. I don't think it's inconceivable that a product like this could exist in the real world. Lucha Underground and the fantastic EMLL: Strange Lucha Things diary by LaEstrella incorporate some similar elements - this is just a natural progression beyond that point.

Due to the nature of the storytelling in this diary, there will be no pre-announced match cards, so no predictions.

I'm aiming to release one show a week, on Sundays. I may add in a few extra bits of lore here and there, but they will not be regular. The in-game promotion's schedule follows a seasonal structure with around 8 episodes per season, lasting for 4 months (2 shows per month) and ending in a climactic event at the end.

I hope you enjoy the read!

You've really gone for something different here. Between this introduction and the preview over in the other thread, my interest is definitely peaked.

I think what I'm most curious about is where this will fit into the Cverse - sounds like it will be a promotion in the UK - and more importantly, which workers will be involved and what gimmicks will they be running.

I think the short odds are on Joanna Silver and Hugh De Aske to at least eventually make appearances, but both aren't native to the UK, so the choice of game region intrigues me.

It's a bit out there, but I'm hoping it gives a bit of a different experience for everyone.

So the company is based in Plymouth, where I'm from. I was initially going to do it with a real world mod but the last few months haven't been great for British wrestling so I stuck with the C-Verse. Turns out that was for the best as I'm getting to know a bunch of new workers that I didn't know before and enjoying the game in a way I wouldn't have done if it was a real world mod.

At the moment I'm sticking to British and European workers. I could get a bunch of foreign wrestlers in using the "talk to" feature, but I want to limit it so it's a bit more realistic (he says when making a company based around pirates). At the moment you can't tell who the workers are from reading the diary - they all play a character - but at some point I'll post the cast. In some cases I've got the same worker playing different minor roles each week - you have to imagine they've got different costumes on...

Your excellent OLLIE diary and of course La Estrella's EMLL was the inspiration for my LU diary so I look forward to this project as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed the OLLIE story. I'm still posting up shows for that, although I think the thread has got cluttered with long daily posts. I've jsut had a look at your Lucha Underground diary - I'm intrigued about what happened to Rey Mysterio!

This looks interesting. Are you a fan of the Uncharted series?

I'm not actually. I own the games but I've never played them. A bigger inspiration for me is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. The world in that game is so fun and immersive. I spent hours jumping around treetops and exploring tiny islands in the middle of nowhere. And the shanties are excellent.

The adventure/pirate theme came up because I wanted to do an over-the-top character promotion and I wanted to do something in my area which has a big naval history, so it was a perfect fit. Quite a lot of the places you'll see in the story are real places, although some of them I've embellished.

I'm hoping to get some honest feedback from you guys who have read the first two shows.

How do you feel about the layout of the matches with the alternating actions? I wonder if it makes for easier reading or if it is confusing etc. Any comments would be really helpful!

I like the back and forth for dialogue, but I do find it stifles the flow a little bit when I'm bouncing back and forth for the action e.g.

Ricky punched Andres

Andres wiped blood from his face and then punched Ricky.

It's only my personal opinion, but I like the action as a regular paragraph i.e.

Ricky punched Andres, staggering him. Andres wiped the blood from his face and hit Ricky with a right hand of his own.

It's not a major issue either way, doesn't detract from the diary, just weighing in with my opinion.
