WCW Monday Nitro

Monday, Week 1, February 1998

Montana Entertainment Trade and Recreation Arena; Billings, MT

To kick off the month of February, we have a huge championship rematch in our main event: Diamond Dallas Page will defend the United States belt against the man he defeated for the championship, Curt Hennig of the new World order! Will it be a fair fight, or will Rick Rude, Scott Steiner, or someone else make their presence known to swing the bout in Hennig's favor?

Not only that, but "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair has pledged to be in the building to ask Chris Benoit a simple question: Why? Why did he betray the Horsemen for the Flock? Will Benoit provide an answer? And, Lex Luger calls out the man who laid him out in the parking lot last week! We've got an action-packed show for you!

The card announced thus far is as follows:

Glacier and Ernest Miller vs. Konnan and Scott Norton w/Vincent

Non-Title Match

Lizmark Jr. vs. Eddy Guerrero

Rick Steiner vs. The Barbarian w/Meng and Jimmy Hart

Rock 'n' Roll Express vs. Mortis & Wrath w/James Vandenberg

Disco Inferno w/Rick Martel vs. Sick Boy w/The Flock

Jim Neidhart vs. Randy Savage w/Elizabeth

Great show. Loved Benoit's turn!!

Thanks man! That was one of the first major ideas I had when coming up with the diary. I sometimes struggle with what to do with him because of real life, but I thought it was believable for him to enter The Flock much like Daniel Bryan entered The Wyatt Family in 2014, though I can assure you this will go a little bit differently. He has pretty clear reasons which will be revealed. And I think this coup against Flair adds a lot of legitimacy to Raven as he isn't just pulling these scrubs like Sick Boy and Lodi off the street - now he has a real weapon with strong WCW ties.

Steve Blackman is the IC Champion??

...do you have a problem with The Lethal Weapon?! Seriously though, he was undefeated at this point in real life and actually pinned The Rock on Raw in February '98 so it's not that unbelievable! I just wish I'd have come up with the idea :D

DDP was so good in 98, still a bit of a crime to me that they held off until spring 99 before putting the belt on him. He holds on to the US title here.

One of the things I've just noticed, what happened with Piper? I'm assuming he quit between the Steel Cage match announcement and JJ Dillon reinforcing that stip the following week.

Yup, he was feeling isolated backstage and that was that. I think he was also angry at not being on Starrcade (along with quite a few others - rookie mistake not running some BS battle royal on the pre-show). WCW starts out with kind of a crappy backstage environment that I've been trying to make my way toward fixing. Piper was a casualty of that. To be honest, I didn't plan on doing as much with him as they were doing at the time - his Hogan feud had run its course and then some by then. I'd be open to him coming back at some point but obviously that won't happen just yet.

As for the next update: I posted this in Discord but not here. My dad and I both got COVID about 6 weeks ago - I recovered after a week or so but he was on a ventilator for a month, so I've been pretty busy helping him and running back and forth to the hospital. He's thankfully on the road to recovery now, but that's why there's been such a delay since the last show. It'll be back as soon as I've got a little less craziness going on!

Also, i hope you and your dad are okay there. You have my support.

I don't think they really had anything for him in real life after the Hogan feud to be honest, he did some proper legacy tarnishing stuff in 1999 into 2000. But he's probably no great loss for you either way, unless WWF hire him and put him against Austin!

Yeah it can be a real bastard if you catch it but I'm glad you're both on the mend. :) All my best to your pops.

Hey buddy. Sorry to hear about your Dad, but glad he sounds like he's on the mend. x

Thanks guys! I think he's out of the woods, just doing rehab and stuff, so I'm always running back and forth and just wiped out. Between that and work, all I've been wanting to do in my spare time is watch movies and play (other) video games. Been getting the itch to come back though, so I'll probably switch back over to TEW pretty soon.

Update over here: I've got 3 months of shows planned out that I haven't yet inputted into TEW or written up, so there is no shortage of content coming. Just had to get through the whole COVID thing, plus work has been insane as of late.

I'm about to be on a 10-day vacation where I'm not sure if I have space for my laptop yet, but if I do there could be some updates soon. At the very latest, I'll be back early July. I've got basically through Spring Stampede booked and have my broader plans for Slamboree and beyond (more or less main event plans through Road Wild) mapped out. Hope you'll stick around with me!

WCW 1998 Recap So Far

WCW 1998: Empire Falls Recap

Hey everyone! I'm back from my hiatus. This isn't a true "in-character" post, I just wanted to refresh readers' memories on what has gone on so far. You haven't yet seen a whole lot of my long-term plans, but it might be worth a short catch-up post to bring you back up to speed. So far, we've had a continuation of the war between the new World order and the WCW faithful, and it has ebbed and flowed in favor of both contingents.

At this point by the end of January 1998, WCW has the nWo on the ropes. Though the new World order entered December '97 with three belts (the Heavyweight, United States, and arguably the World Tag Team), it left Starrcade with a grand total of zero for the first time since "Hollywood" first captured the Heavyweight belt from The Giant back at Hog Wild '96. With the help of an unlikely ally in the debuting Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Sting succeeded in ending WCW's nightmare, scrubbing the nWo spraypaint off of the big gold belt after defeating Hogan inside a steel cage at Starrcade. After a hard-fought victory over "Macho Man" Randy Savage at Souled Out, Sting now looks to the winner of World War 3, Scott Hall, for his challenge at SuperBrawl VIII.

Hogan has vowed to recapture the belt but has been doing his best to avoid facing off with "The Hitman." He feigned an injury at Souled Out to force nWo teammate Curt Hennig into action against Bret. Hennig was happy to get on the card, but he wasn't thrilled when Hogan attacked Bret with a crutch to end Hennig's chance at advancing toward a title shot. Bret continues to attempt to get Hogan to face him one-on-one, though on the final Nitro of January '98, Hogan yet again cracked him with the crutch and left Bret and the Bulldog down and out.

Hennig, as noted, has been growing increasingly frustrated since he lost the United States belt to Diamond Dallas Page back in early December. While he advanced through his rivalry with "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair as the winner thanks to a hammer to the hand of The Giant, Hennig has seemingly felt exasperated with his nWo situation, even refusing to help Hogan beat down Hart after the aforementioned Souled Out fiasco. To this point, cooler heads have prevailed and Hennig remains a member of the nWo, but for how long?

Men whose allegiances should not be questioned are The Outsiders. They have attempted to bring peace to the friction between the likes of Hennig, Hogan, and Savage in order to keep the band together. They, along with Eric Bischoff, even worked to drive a wedge between The Steiner Brothers, ending their marathon rivalry with a shocking turn by Scott Steiner on his brother Rick and Larry Zbyszko at Starrcade. Though they dropped the Tag Team Championships to Harlem Heat due to a variety of circumstances including Hart Family interference, The Outsiders continue to roll: Scott Hall challenges Sting at SuperBrawl and Nash goes one-on-one with the 500-pound Giant.

Next up for Scott Steiner is the United States Champion, DDP, who has been red hot. He knocked off Hennig in December to win the United States Heavyweight belt and Konnan at Starrcade before locking horns with "The Total Package" Lex Luger at Souled Out. The pair of WCW stalwarts had formed an uneasy alliance, but then Page accidentally(?) dropped Luger with a Diamond Cutter in a fracas against the nWo. After defeating Luger, DDP has had a target on his back and Steiner is the marksman, seeking not only the championship but also has made advances toward Page's newly revealed wife, Kimberly. Not to be forgotten, Rick Steiner has been hunting his brother for payback as well. Meanwhile, Luger was recently found dropped in the parking lot and says he will confront his attacker this Monday on Nitro.

Outside of the nWo, a blood feud has developed between The Four Horsemen and The Flock. Raven has vowed to destroy the institutions within professional wrestling and in society that he feels have held people like him down. After Chris Benoit fought through the entire Flock to get to Raven at Starrcade, he succumbed to his wounds and Raven finished him off, but that rivalry did not end there. Flair and Benoit helped Steve "Mongo" McMichael capture his first ever TV Title by defeating the then-undefeated Saturn, but it's Raven who claimed the biggest victory thus far, when he coaxed Benoit into turning on his mentor and joining The Flock! We still don't know why Benoit attacked Flair, but we do know that the dynamic in this rivalry has drastically changed.

Elsewhere, Harlem Heat are the Tag Team Champions, scheduled to take on Mortis & Wrath at SuperBrawl. Former professional football player Bill Goldberg has throttled every challenger, most recently defeating The Barbarian at Souled Out and Steven Regal the next night on Nitro en route to improving his record to 24-0 in WCW. And, of course, the WCW cruiserweight division is revolutionizing wrestling as the likes of Rey Mysterio Jr., the constant whiner "Lionheart" Chris Jericho, "The Iceman" Dean Malenko, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and many others, including the Cruiserweight Champion Eddy Guerrero, have put on exciting contest after exciting contest. It's clear that the future of WCW lies with many of these men.

So thanks for sticking with me through all this – I've got everything through Uncensored-Spring Stampedeish planned out and I'm ready to go! The latest Nitro preview is somewhere above, so if you haven't predicted, feel free to. Hope you enjoy!

Lex comes out to a big pop with bandages on his forehead and tape on his shoulder. Okerlund runs down the heinous attack that occurred last week and says that Luger caught a glimpse at who the perpetrator was. Everyone has been asking all over the World Wide Web and the WCW Hotline: who was it?</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Luger says a lot of times in the wrestling business when a guy gets attacked from behind, there's weeks of a whodunnit, but that's not what happened here. He says that the man, or rather, the </span></span></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>men</em></span></span></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> who attacked him, have history with "The Total Package" and have been in the same locker rooms as him for years. And as soon as that briefcase hit him in the back of the head, he knew exactly who the culprits were.</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

"If you had a problem with me, you could've just said it to my face. Now you're gonna have to have the guts to walk down that aisle and face me right now. Curt Hennig…Rick Rude…get out here!"</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Rude explains that he's out to the ring merely as an advocate because Curt is warming up for his U.S. Title match later on tonight. Rude says though, that yeah, it was Hennig who took Lex out last week, but he did it not because he has a problem with Luger or he doesn't have the guts to face him. He did it because Lex might be "The Total Package" physically and athletically, but strategically he's a mental midget. And when there's an opportunity to take out an opponent, the nWo takes that opportunity. Because winning is winning, and business is business. Rick says he's sorry that Luger was too dumb to have his head on a swivel last week. As Lex chuckles and walks toward him, Rude reminds him that he's just an advocate and that if Luger hits him, he'll sue him to hell. </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

As Lex weighs his options, though, he's hit with a chop block from behind by </span></span></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong>Curt Hennig</strong></span></span></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">! As Gene shouts and Curt puts the boots to Luger, with Rude getting some shots in, Lex crawls his way over to the corner. Hennig and Rude taunt the crowd, and Curt turns around to a huge clothesline from "The Total Package"! He gets up, but as Lex goes for a big forearm, Curt drops to the ground as he and Rude roll out of the ring and head for the back!</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a matchup of two men with screws loose in their brains, each wrestler found himself on the receiving end of clubbing blows and thunderous suplexes from the other. However, it was Rick Steiner that was able to grit out the victory with a Diving Bulldog.</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

After the match, Steiner grabs a microphone from ringside and makes his intentions clear: "my brother Scott might'a gothimself a U.S. Title shot but Scotty, you ain't getting that belt unless it's OVER MY DEAD BODY!" Rick tosses the mic to the ground and walks out. </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The announcers spend the match putting over Vandenberg's recent "analysis" of Alex Wright, and Heenan expresses his ability to evaluate talent, since Mortis and Wrath take on Harlem Heat at SuperBrawl for the Tag Team belts. There's no pomp and circumstance as there normally would be, and Flair grabs a microphone when he enters the ring. He says he's been trying to get in touch with Chris Benoit all week, but he wouldn't return his calls. He looked for him in the locker room earlier, but Benoit was nowhere to be found. Flair says he waited for Chris to come out to ringside because he needed to see it with his own eyes, that Benoit spit in the face of the Horsemen and joined The Flock. "I just wanna know, brother…why?"</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

As Flair waits for an answer, near tears, Benoit stares vacantly through him. As it becomes clear Benoit isn't going to answer, Arn gets angry and says that after all the Horsemen and Ric Flair did to turn Benoit into one of the premier athletes and biggest up-and-coming stars in World Championship Wrestling, Benoit owes them an explanation. Kidman fetches Raven a microphone and he stands up.</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

"Don't you see Ric, Arn? Don't you get it? There's an obvious reason why your golden boy is now in my Flock, and that's because you failed him. The Horsemen failed Chris Benoit, WCW failed Chris Benoit, and Arn Anderson and Ric Flair failed Chris Benoit. No man has poured more blood, sweat, and tears in that ring than this man for the last few years and what does he have to show for it? He's yet another wrestler in this business chewed up and spit out by the powers that be because he doesn't play politics in the back with Kevin Sullivan, J.J. Dillon, Terry Taylor, and Ted Turner. He didn't spit in the face of The Horsemen…he's healing. And together, we're gonna turn this company upside down until the outcasts run the asylum."</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Without Bret and Davey Boy, this was a tall task for Neidhart. Although "The Anvil" was able to make it out to the ring after the assault earlier in the night, he was no match for the predatory instincts of "The Macho Man." Biting, scratching, and clawing, Savage mercifully ended this one with a Flying Elbow.</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

As the two destroy Neidhart, Bischoff taunts Bret and the Bulldog, asking where they are. After a Hogan legdrop to "The Anvil," they put the exclamation point on top: Savage wraps a chair around Neidhart's thick neck and jumps off the top rope, stomping on the chair! With the announce team up in arms calling for help, Neidhart rolls around in pain as a half-dozen WCW officials run down to the ring to get him medical attention. Before they arrive, however, Hogan takes the time to shake the can and paint "nWo" on the back of "The Anvil"!</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

While Hennig was the man who Page defeated for the title, this match had an entirely different context surrounding it. As Luger expected, Scott Steiner accompanied Hennig to the ring, and so Lex did the same for Diamond Dallas. And it didn't take long for the match to devolve. Luger stopped Rude from distracting referee Mickey Jay, though Jay had his hands full with Steiner too! Steiner and Luger got into it a number of times along the outside until Rude leveled Lex in the back with the briefcase! In the end, though, the crowd popped for Kimberly pulling at Steiner's leg on the apron, causing him to slip and hit his head, tumbling down to the floor! This took Page aback, and Hennig tried to capitalize, but DDP turned a Hennig Plex attempt into a Diamond Cutter and covered for the three!</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

After the match, Steiner walks over to Kimberly and says she's gonna regret what she just did, but Page slides under the ropes and gets in between the two. Page and Steiner push each other, but when Steiner goes to attack, Page slips underneath – another Diamond Cutter! By this time, Lex is back on his feet as he makes sure that Hennig doesn't sneak attack Diamond Dallas. In the ring, Luger celebrates with Page and Kimberly as DDP has retained his belt!</span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Very good show. Raven and The Flock have been so good for you.

I'm also enjoying the DDP push a lot, he was over like rover in '98 WCW but never pushed at the magnitude I feel he's being pushed here.

Thanks man. I always felt Raven got a raw deal in WCW so I wanted to kind of test him out and see where he can go. Listening to 83 Weeks, it's clear that Bischoff never really "got" him, so in my alternate universe he does :D.

As for DDP, yeah, I was watching some late '97 shows in prep for this game and he was absolutely nuclear, especially in the Macho Man feud. So was Luger, actually. But it was clear that DDP was probably right behind the nWo and Sting (and maybe Bret) in terms of heat at this time, since Goldberg wasn't quite there yet. I wanted to position DDP as a centerpiece of WCW, but I haven't really had him in any major feud yet so I'm glad to see that it's working regardless.

WCW Saturday Night

Saturday, Week 1, February 1998

Jamestown Civic Center; Jamestown, ND

As we’re welcomed to the broadcast by
Tony Schiavone
and
"Iron" Mike Tenay
, a video airs showing the recap from Nitro of the
nWo’s
vicious attack on
The Hart Family
in the parking lot, followed up by their assault of Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart later on in the night. Tenay says that Bret reached out to him so that he would let the WCW faithful know that he will be at Nitro this Monday and that he’s yet again laying down a challenge!

Jeff Bearden and Mike Enos
vs.
The Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart

Despite the considerable size of their opponents, Meng and The Barbarian were able to put them down quite easily. A Flying Headbutt from Barbarian to Bearden finished this one off.

After a quick graphic showing that
Lord Steven Regal
will step into the ring with the undefeated
Bill Goldberg
this Monday night, Regal has a pre-taped promo. He says that WCW has been filled to the brim with brutes like Bill Goldberg and that he’s finally going to teach him some manners on Nitro.

Chavo Guerrero Jr.
vs.
Halloween

In decent cruiserweight action, Chavo continued building momentum toward his championship match against Eddy with a Gory Bomb to Halloween for the win.

After the match,
Eddy Guerrero
walks out to the top of the aisle with a microphone and taunts Chavo. “No one in the Guerrero family thought you’d be here, ese, and you’re a great story, but you’re not taking this title from me because you’re just…not…championship material, orale!” Chavo welcomes him into the ring, but Eddy just holds the belt up and walks out.

Following a quick break, a video airs showing
Raven’s
explanation of the actions of
Chris Benoit
in turning on
The Horsemen
from Nitro.

Dean Malenko w/Steve McMichael
vs.
Riggs w/The Flock

Even with his eyepatch, Scotty Riggs is a solid competitor in the ring, and Malenko drew the best out of him. Even with The Flock (including Benoit) just inside the railing, though, Riggs wasn’t able to pull the upset and submitted to the Texas Cloverleaf.

The following announcement has been paid for by the new World order…

In this nWo advertisement, we see
Scott Steiner
alongside
Buff Bagwell
and
Konnan
, as Scotty talks about his US Title match at SuperBrawl. He says he forgives Kimberly for what she did on Monday because he’s a good guy, but that at SuperBrawl, he’s gonna take DDP’s title and his woman!

Next up,
Rick Martel
and
Disco Inferno
are in the back with
"Mean" Gene
, who asks them about their recent partnership. Martel explains that he thought Disco was a little bit of a cocky stiff, but the two share some similar ideas. Disco says that not only are they great pro wrestlers, but they know how to get ahead in life: you gotta look good to feel good! Plus, “he can’t dance like I can,” Disco says, and Martel scoffs as they walk off.

The Giant
vs.
John Nord

Not that we didn’t know this, but The Giant is strong. He sent a message to Kevin Nash by landing a thunderous Chokeslam on the 6’9, 300+ pound Nord for the win.

After the match, Giant grabs a mic and, in his not-so-eloquent way, challenges Nash to come face-to-face with “a real GIANT” on Monday!
