AAW: Canada's Upstarts

Sometime in Mid 2019

It was after a recent ACPW show where Face Nelson is talking to Shepton Mallet, AKA Sky King, about future plans.

Face: "I believe we can carry this to the start of twenty twenty and then let you put Captain Canada over before transitioning to backstage fully. I think it will be.....Shep? You listening?"

Sky King: "Hmm?"

Face knew Sky King was distracted. Why he was distracted he didn't know, but it was a bit concerning. Sky King has been old reliable for many years and a helpful member of the roster, but recently he just seemed lost in thought all too often.

Face: "Is there something you want to say?"

There is a few moments of silence and Sky King contemplates before giving a nod.

Sky King: "I'll put the kid over, but I don't want it drawn out. I'll do it next month and then I am done."

Face Nelson being surprised is an understatement. He isn't really sure he really heard what he just did as he stares at Sky King.

Face: "Come again?"

Sky King: "I'll put Captain Canada over, but then I am done. I appreciate my ten years working here, but I have to move on."

Face: "This is rather sudden. Is something wrong? Are you having health problems?"

Sky King: "No, I am having regrets. Face, this is not anything you or the boss did. I just need to leave and consider things. I won't screw you guys. I'll do one last match."

Nelson: "Are you sure?"

Sky King: "No, but I feel I have to do this. I'm sorry."

With that said it was set. After ten years Sky King is leaving ACPW. Perhaps something no one saw coming, but in his mind it has been a few years late.

Art Lawson. A well traveled and respected wrestler who never made a big name for himself, but after retiring he did well as an agent and mentor for many up and coming names. In 2009 he became the road agent for the newly minted ACPW promotion. He was a sound choice as his experience could help the young group hired by the company.

He did well at his job and over the years he became friends with Sky King who was brought in to be the veteran of the company. Things went well for years and the company did well even if never getting a lot of attention given the competition in Canada. It was as years passed Art got a bit restless about things and in around 2013 he had an idea. An idea for a another company and he approached Sky King to take the book. A company similar to ACPW, but with a bit more showmanship to go with the high impact wrestling.

At the time Sky King was unsure about that. He was settled into ACPW at this point and while he would never a be a top guy he was fine with it. He had the respect of the locker room and to leave right then and there seemed like a big risk. In the end he declined and Art while disappointed remained in ACPW up until 2015.

Years went by and ACPW kept on trucking, but it also began to change. Change is inevitable, but Sky King was unsure if he liked the change he was seeing. The landscape of Canada was changing with companies struggling and more and more Sky King wondered if Art perhaps was onto something those years ago. At forty Sky King realizes his in ring career isn't going to last much longer and he decided now is the time to make the gambit. It is time to perhaps realize the dream Art had all those years ago. It is time for a new company to enter the Canadian landscape. First thing is first. It is time to find a booker.

Announcer: "Winners of the main event are Clutch McKane and TJ Bailey! They have defeated Sam the Sham and the Over Forty Pharaoh!"</p><p> </p><p>

*Sigh* Sure, another win and another halfway decent payout, but sometimes just doing spot shows being 'That team from 4C' isn't exactly exciting. Not that I ever expected to be a big name in the business, but lately I have considered maybe wrestling is just not worth it anymore.</p><p> </p><p>

TJ: "Hey good win tonight. See you in two weeks at that show in Calgary?"</p><p> </p><p>

"Huh? Oh, sure thing. I'll see you then."</p><p> </p><p>

It feels like 2011 is so long ago at this point. Graduating from the 4C academy and getting into the crazy environment which was 4C itself. Sure I wanted to be a big name and I did my best to put in hard work. It paid off I suppose. I did get a tag title run with TJ for what it is worth. Something that lasted a few months at least so I did more than some in the business.</p><p> </p><p>

Maybe I had doubts about myself as time went by. The tag titles were lost and I was lost too. Lost in the shuffle and like many of my contemporaries just struggling to find a spot as Troy was looking to bring in big names and make the company larger.</p><p> </p><p>

Boy did that backfire, huh? 4C is gone now and the big names we had moved onto bigger, better things, but a majority of us? Yeah we find shows where we can. Me and TJ can at least get decent pay for being former champs, but since the closure in July until now we maybe have been booked three times with chances to perform a bit in 2020 when it comes around. Like working for 4C it won't pay bills, but 4C gave me decent enough checks. I honestly think it may be time to call it quits.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="d7qNnoB.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/d7qNnoB.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

That is when this man came in. A man I like many cruiserweights in the Canadian scene have respect for. Sky King may never have been the biggest name, but he was an innovator and inspired many. He is often an unsung hero because he was never in the big leagues, but guys like me? He is who we wanted to be when getting into the business.</p><p> </p><p>

I don't even know what brought him into contact me. There were so many other guys from 4C in my position and yet he got in touch with me and we got to talking. Shepton is a helluva guy and he was telling me of his regrets and wanting to try something new before he retired. When he asked me if I was interested who was I to say no?</p><p> </p><p>

What I didn't expect was him wanting me to take the book. Look, I have never been the guy for booking. The extent of booking for me is doing fantasy booking on forums and such. I explained my hesitance, but for some reason Shepton felt I was the man for the job. It wasn't going to be just me overall. Of course he would have input along with a veteran or two he was planning on bringing in, but it was a very humbling experience.</p><p> </p><p>

Will I ever be a big name? No, probably not, but if I can give to this business and perhaps in the long run become a pioneer in a way like Sky King was or ever help create a big name for the future? I had to agree. 4C is closed, the Canadian scene has been interesting to say the least lately. Maybe in 2020 we can make it more interesting.</p><p> </p><p>

Ed 'Freaking' Larkins, otherwise known as Phenomenal E. A well traveled man who has wrestled in both Canada and Japan where the latter is where he really stood out. A man that in the early years of 4C was a stalwart before shifting his focus to the Land of the Rising Sun for over a decade where he was a three time junior heavyweight tag team champion with American Optimus.</p><p> </p><p>

Singles gold may have eluded him, but he still had a pretty good following and he got to work with one of the biggest companies in the world for a long time, but life in Japan started to be a bit much. Ed started to get homesick and with his contract running out he decided to not renew. After years in Japan he returned to Canada looking for some new adventures and maybe trying to finagle his way into CWA.</p><p> </p><p>

Instead it wasn't CWA that called, but in September just a week or so after fully settling back in Canada he got a call from fellow veteran Sky King. The offer was made to try and kick off a new company and given his popularity in Canada did not match that in Japan he saw it as a stepping stone. A way to get his name out and catch the eyes of something bigger.</p><p> </p><p>

It seemed all too good of a deal and even if the budget was meager, Ed was good with finances over his years spent in Japan. Money was not an issue and an agreement was made.</p><p> </p><p>

All Action Wrestling's first official signing was a Phenomenal one.</p><p> </p><p>

Cal Sanders has been in the wrestling scene for almost two decades, but has never made it to the big time. As talented as he was in the ring his lack of charisma and ability to develop an interesting character has always held him back. He was part of 4C in the early years, but never made and impact and since 2006 he has drifted about performing at smaller shows.</p><p> </p><p>

What Cal does have beyond a good in ring ability is the want to help out younger wrestlers and help the business as a whole. Something that perhaps made Sky King consider him a kindred spirit and contacted him. The two hit things off well and after discussion yet another veteran was added to the fold of All Action Wrestling.</p><p> </p><p>

Like Sky King this really could be Cal's last hurrah of sorts. Not a grand company that he would be seen by all, but a new one looking to help those that may or may not ever be CWA material. Cal himself will never be a big name, but perhaps his experiences and knowledge can be passed on to someone who can be.</p><p> </p><p>

Cal Sanders has joined All Action Wrestling.</p><p> </p><p>

When someone needs a referee in Canada it is hard to go wrong with Clarence Garcia. The man has been a ref for almost three decades at this point and he has a build where he has sometimes even been mistaken as a wrestler. A no nonsense professional who has ever gotten to call matches in NOTBPW for five years.

Sky King wanted a referee he could trust and Clarence fit the bill just perfectly and in his mid forties he should still have plenty of years left to give to the business. While there were no plans for announcers one can't fully get away with no referee unless they want to be considered some kind of joke.

Clarence Garcia and his mustache have joined AAW.

TJ Bailey: "A new company and hopefully consistent booking? You damn right I am in."

This wasn't a surprising answer. I have been working with TJ still since 4C folded and even in those short months he was just like me. Unsure how long the work would come and at his age his chances of hitting the big leagues are pretty low.

"I'm glad to hear it. I'll let Shep know. He is having me try to get in touch with some of the other guys."

TJ Bailey: "You got my number, just give me a place and time when it is all set up. I'll be waiting."

With that I hung up and felt a bit relieved to have a friend around during what is going to be a strange upcoming few months. I still have no idea if I am right for the job, but I am going to give it all I got. It also helps Shep is dealing with a good chunk of the hiring. Beyond TJ there is a list of a few other ex-4C guys he wanted me to talk to figuring I might be the better one to approach them.

Did I mention it is weird to call Sky King Shep? He doesn't really like Shepton being used and he admits being called Sky King and such outside of shows feels silly. He's a great guy and I am glad to have finally got to meet him. Getting to work with one of my heroes is honestly why I was so quick to agree. Perhaps it was good I didn't put too much thought into it all. It would have been too much time to start to second guess or doubt myself.

Well.....there is no turning back now. With TJ off my list I just have to get in touch with three others. Shep has only mentioned a few names to me that he is working on, but from what ones I have been told I am excited. I really hope we can make this all work in the long run.

Arthur Dexter Bradley has never quite reached the heights he was hoping once he entered wrestling. For ten years he has done his best to try and draw the attention of bigger companies with the result only being a handful of years in FCW when he was a fresh face on the scene. Now after ten years he has spent most of his time in Mexico with thoughts of going to Japan at some point like his older brothers have.</p><p> </p><p>

What he didn't expect was a different divergence in his career when he got a phone call from Sky King. It was a long travel to get to Alberta Canada, but after hearing the plans Sky King had he thought it was perhaps worth the effort to do so. The worst case is he works a few shows and decides it is not for him and he continues to try and catch eyes in Mexico. If anything it gives him a chance to work with a few names he has never been in the ring before and along with a change of scenery.</p><p> </p><p>

From hot to cold, ADB has joined AAW.</p><p> </p><p>

Dangerous, sloppy, an injury machine.</p><p> </p><p>

All fair names Brimstone has been called over the course of his ten plus year career in the wrestling business. He has done his best to improve over that time and while still not exactly the most safe or impressive workers he has become better than he was all those years ago when he was let go by PSW.</p><p> </p><p>

Still that early reputation has hurt him throughout the years and shows trickle in here and there for those brave enough to take a chance on the man. Never enough to let him quit his day job, but enough to give him hope he can maybe be given another chance by the likes of PSW, IPW or even GSW.</p><p> </p><p>

Then a call came from Sky King. An offer to come to Canada and do a few shows for a new company the veteran was starting up in a few months time. It was a travel, but it was also an offer for far more consistent work in wrestling than he has had in a decade. It was a no brainer and maybe, just maybe he could show he is not as dangerous as many think he is.</p><p> </p><p>

Or then again will he prove all those people have been right over the years?</p><p> </p><p>

One way or the other Brimstone is now with AAW.</p><p> </p><p>

Reilly Patton: "Are you kidding me? I haven't worked since 4C went under. I am all for this."

"I am glad to hear that. I'll let Shepton know and we'll get details all sorted out."

Reilly Patton: "I'm looking forward to it! See you soon hopefully! I promise I haven't gotten rusty!"

Reilly was perhaps the easiest sell out of those I was to contact after TJ. TJ was going to be a given since given our relationship as tag partners over the years. Reilly is young and honestly as nice guy, but being nice isn't always going to get you a job. His short time in 4C mostly saw him as an opening match worker that mostly was there to make others look good. He is a heck of a worker, but he isn't really a showman that get people invested in his character.

For him this might be the second chance he never figured he would get. ACPW may have taken a look, but they are pretty stacked and it might be a few years before he got a chance. I am happy Shepton gave that name to me and if I could I would try to bring in all the guys in 4C without a proper job to come in, but that would be a bit much. The fact I am getting a chance to bring a few in is pleasing.

The easy part is over. I never had a doubt about TJ and Reilly, but the other two I was tasked to recruit? Well we'll see how that goes because in all honesty I have no idea what may happen.

Garfield Marley, a backyard worker who has started to gain some popularity while possibly also being more dangerous than Brimstone. Or perhaps it is best to compare him to Brimstone when he was early in his career. Going by G Force, the young wrestler has garnered some attention, but is very much a project that needs a lot of polish.

A perfect project for a veteran like Sky King. AAW has the veterans and now it needs youth and someone like G Force seemed to fit the bill. Young and willing, G Force was more than happy to accept the offer to come to Alberta and perform in a non backyard environment.

Young and athletic it will perhaps be a few years before one can figure out how G Force will turn out, but someone like Sky King getting his hands on a prospect early in their career could make a big difference.

AAW is about to feel the FORCE (G Force).

Walter Jones has had a rather unspectacular career as a whole. Debuting as Drop Kix he managed to score some work for the rather violent world of GSW for a years before a broken leg ended his run. A rough way to go out, but perhaps a change of scenery once he returned would do him good. The problem was that change of scenery never really came.

Mostly toiling away at small shows Walter has done his best to secure work and improve in the ring with a mixed bag of success. What he does have is time on his side and a good work ethic that might help him carve out a decent career if he would find the right place. Sky King certainly thought so because Walter got a call that invited him to come to Alberta and take part in a new upstart company. The change of scenery has arrived and now it is up to Drop Kix to thrive in it.

Drop Kix has joined AAW.

Let be known I am a fan of music, but admittedly me and metal do not go hand in hand so well, but tonight is an exception. Tonight I was looking for someone and my search led me to tonight's Unleash the Archers concert to find him.

At least it didn't take long to find who I was looking for as even among the crowd of metalheads he sort of stood out. Might help he was wearing a security shirt too while tossing a already drunk fan about to get him away from the stage and out the side door.

HwOnfxi.jpg

Metal Intensifies

Mosher: "And stay out you stupid f-oh hi, Clutch! I didn't know you liked this kind of stuff."

"Err, I don't. I was hoping to find you here."

You know, I will admit something. I actually never got Mosher's real name and in fact I don't know if he ever really told anyone during my time working with him at 4C. Maybe Troy new it since he signed checks, but I think the rest of us just always called him Mosher or Mosh for short.

Mosher: "Really? You know a phone is a thing, but then again you don't have my number I guess."

"Yeah, well this wasn't exactly easy too. I had to do some searching. Can we talk."

Mosher: "Not right now. I got to get back to the stage. Catch you when the show dies down."

Sigh, I was afraid of that.

** Hours Later **

PWKurmW.jpgHwOnfxi.jpg

The show finally ended and my ears are ringing a bit. I haven't been to a concert in a long time and this one wasn't my cup of tea. I was a bit tired and discombobulated when Mosher finally had time to come talk.

Mosher: "Great show, right? This job has been pretty damn sweet."

"Yeah, uh, great show. So this is a regular gig now? Are you wrestling still?"

Mosher: "Not since 4C closed really. Just a show or two. The pay wasn't too great and I have taken the time to get steady pay here as security for shows while finally letting myself heal up."

That last part was at least good to hear. Mosher is only a few years younger than me, but his body has taken a beating in his short time wrestling. A shame since he seemed to never gain a lot of momentum which halted both a singles and a tag push during his time at 4C.

"I see, well glad you are healing up. I know you probably aren't expecting this, but I am wanting to see if you are interested in wrestling steady again."

Mosher: "Yeah? You need a new partner for a show or something? Figured you and TJ were doing your thing still."

"We still tag, but this is different."

I took my time to explain things and that Shepton personally had an interest in bringing Mosher in. The reasoning why I honestly don't know, but I always got along with Mosh so I didn't really question things. He was a bit of a wild card though so I wasn't sure if he would have any interest in what would be a different environment than 4C. The grin on his face when I was winding down my sales pitch seemed to say he was very interested.

Mosher: "You know. ACPW does shows around here and I admit I have gone in hopes of getting hired, but no interest really. Not sure about the whole fighting a girl thing too so probably for the best. But working steady and just having to travel to Alberta once a month or so? Hell yeah I am interested. Where do I sign up?"

"Glad to hear it, Mosh. Give me your number to pass along and I am sure Shep will give you a call and hammer out pay and such."

Mosher: "Shep. Hah, that is so weird to think of Sky King with a different name. Sure thing on the number."

Numbers were exchanged and another name secured for AAW. It is comforting to get more names I am familiar with involved and with Mosher joining up there was one last guy Shepton wanted me to seek out. The one I am most uncertain about.

"Hey Mosh....you have any idea what your old tag partner is up to?"

Solid, dependable, unexciting. Those were three words that described Konosuke Hama when he made his debut back in 2003. The first two words are good ones to be associated with, but that last one made him rethink his course in the wrestling industry and in a few years the eccentric and dark Evil Spirit was born.

The switch breathed new life into Hama's career and even as bookings went up he never got what he wanted which was a full time contract in one of the many companies in Japan. Looking for more consistent work he broadened his horizons to many other countries and still he could not find the work he was looking for.

He was a man that had demand, but not enough to where he felt he should be. Thankfully for him it looked like at least one person appreciated his body of work over the years and even if it wasn't a job in Hama got an offer from Sky King to come to Canada to ply his trade.

He is older, but time may still be on Hama's side for at least a few years. Can he make something of it? that remains to be seen, but he is yet another veteran presence and in Canada a new face that might wow the fans with his strange and alluring gimmick.

AAW is about to get EVIL.

Lenny Badman dreams of being a big star in professional wrestling. That is exactly why he is wearing a mask right now so many would forget his forays in the backyard wrestling scene that showed off a youth that was athletic and capable of big moves, but also very green and a danger to himself and others.

Appearing now as the Masked Patriot, Lenny hopes he could carve some sort of career that would take him beyond small time shows playing in front of a scant amount of people. All he needed was a platform to showcase those skills and it was soon offered by Sky King who gave the youth a call.

Masked Patriot has a lot of work to do to become a true wrestler and while exciting he is a danger to himself and others. Can Sky King and other veterans in AAW fix that remains to be seen, but the masked wrestler gets his first big break to show what he can do.

AAW is getting patriotic in a weird way.

The meeting with Mosher helped me a bit in finding the last person I was in charge of trying to get to sign with AAW. If not for tips there I might have had quite a time trying to find him. Really once 4C closed he seemed to almost drop off the map and here I had to travel all the way to a small town in Saskatchewan to find him. Looking up I read the name of the Muay Thai dojo to make sure it was the right place and entered.</p><p> </p><p>

It didn't take long to see who I was looking for currently punishing a punching bag with some pretty stiff kicks.</p><p> </p><p>

Jace Madrigal, better known as Shiva. In fact I don't remember anyone ever really calling him by something other than Shiva. That is if anyone even talked to him. Shiva was always a man of few words.</p><p> </p><p>

"Hey, Shiva."</p><p> </p><p>

Me speaking up led to him pausing in his strikes as he slowly turned to face me. A stone faced look as per usual just felt like I was being stared right through by him.</p><p> </p><p>

Shiva: "Yes?"</p><p> </p><p>

"Oh, uh, well good to see you for one. I-"</p><p> </p><p>

Shiva: "You want something. Just tell me."</p><p> </p><p>

Well he is straight and to the point and so with that being said I proceeded to make my pitch to him about AAW. The problem is his expression rarely changes so I wasn't sure if was even considering it or I was just boring him to death. He did let me finish without interruption at least and remained silent a few moments longer. Yeah, that was a fun awkward silence....not.</p><p> </p><p>

Shiva: "I was thinking of going into the cage. Giving up wrestling."</p><p> </p><p>

I had a feeling that was the case. As far as I know Shiva hasn't even bothered to do anything wrestling related since 4C closed a few months back so I honestly figured it would be a wash.</p><p> </p><p>

"I see, well it was worth a shot. I hope you-"</p><p> </p><p>

Shiva: "I didn't say no. I am just saying I will not be solely focused on the company. I have other things I wish to try."</p><p> </p><p>

That was honestly a better answer than I had hoped for. Shiva has a legit background and honestly out of everyone else I have seen he has a unique style in comparison. That rather cold exterior is the only thing that may totally hold him back from ever making it big. Then again it may add to his sort of 'mysterious badass' persona and make him more popular.</p><p> </p><p>

"So I can tell him you're in?"</p><p> </p><p>

Shiva: "Yes, tell him to contact the dojo. I will get things sorted out."</p><p> </p><p>

It was a relief. Both in getting Shiva to agree and finally leaving that place. I don't THINK he was going to get violent with me, but at the same time I felt like I was walking on eggshells there. For now my work is done when it comes to recruiting. Of course now the real fun begins. Getting with Sky King and working on setting up the first show.</p><p> </p><p>
