THE ULTIMATE GAMBLE!!!

THE FUTURE OF THIS DIARY HINGES ON THE

image.jpeg.df95764c364b4aaf76a4f872763caa45.jpeg

I'm a Raiders fan and I'm not happy. 😣

So, I've come up with a novel idea.

This coming Monday, the Raiders host the Packers in Vegas.

It's simple, the Raiders win and this diary/BTB continues.

If they lose, well, it's over.

I have several shows (including WrestleRock) already done. Plus, a couple of behind the scenes posts.

If the Silver & Black lose, I'll still be posting these in a series of multi-post drops.

Get ready to roll the dice in Vegas on Monday!

I guess I’ll root for Da Raiders, cue the NFL Films legendary music as they throttle the Pack.  Madden vs Lombardi 2 out of 3 Falls.

But honestly you can’t do that under Blondie performs at a PPV.  The Man from Mars has not landed yet!

Exciting, no?

I'm shooting on a complete fantasy promotion.

The idea just popped into my head and it really intrigued me so I ran with it.

Bet no one here has done this before.

I'll have to do a Blondie concert in an epilog if the Raiders lose.

The Raiders need all the support they can get right now.

I'd take Madden bc of the size factor and he would cut better promos.

Back in the glory days of Monday Night Football, the Raiders had the best record and most wins on Monday night.  They are the best MNF team anymore but still have a winning record 43-31-1.  But these Raiders are NOT the Raiders of lore.  This group doesn’t look good at all going against what looks like a less than good Packer team.  Raiders are favored at last check by 2 in what could be a snoozer of a game

Rice, along with Dukes, came out to a fairly strong crowd reax and made his way down the face aisle.

The fight was a back-and-forth affair with both men giving as good as they got. Announcers discussed the upcoming tag title showdown between the Destruction Crew (WTTC) and the Top Guns.

At the end of the match, Rice was on the offensive. DWB as hanging by a thread. Dirty White Girl suddenly jumped up on the apron and the ref went over to get her off (that sounds so wrong). Rice looked over and saw what was going on. With Rice distracted, DWB was able to sneak up behind Rice and hit him with a low-blow. Dirty White  Girl jumped off the apron. Ref turned as DWB rolled Rice up from behind for the pin. 1... DWB grabbed a handful of tights. ...2...thr... Rice managed to kick out. Crowd popped. DWB up and snapped up Rice and whipped Rice into the ropes and looked to catch Rice coming off with a clothesline but Rice ducked the move and  came back with a flying crossbody for the pin. 1...2...thr... DWB kicked out. Crowd groaned. Both men up and DWB blasted Rice with a couple of big head shots, whipped Rice into the ropes and looked to catch Rice coming off with a backdrop but Rice leapfrogged DWB, ran DWB into the ropes and rolled up DWB from behind and also bridged out in the hold for the pin. 1...2...3! Crowd popped as the ref called for the bell.

The Destruction Crew came flying down the heel aisle with belts in hand and the two pounded Dukes at ringside with the straps.  Rice saw what was happening and went to climb out of the ring through the top and middle rope and Enos bashed Rice in the head with his belt as Rice was climbing out and Rice crashed to the floor. Both Guns down and the champs stomping away on them. Crowd cheered as some of the faces charged to ringside and the Destruction Crew beat a hasty retreat back up the heel aisle. Faces checked on Rice and Dukes.

WINNER: Rice - Pinfall - 6:09

In-Studio: Nelson wondered if the tag champs were worried about the Top Guns being a threat to their title reign and that's why they launched the vicious sneak attack on them.

Long time lurker, first time poster. This is my favorite story I've watched. As an AWA fan, I've been enjoying all the twists and turns, and everything. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words.

Hope you'll keep reading. The new era is just starting to kick into a higher gear as readers will see.

It was a really good promotion. But Verne being head headed ruined things in the long run. They were still in pretty good shape in mid-'86 and then it's like they fell off a cliff.

PREDICTIONS WELCOME...

This is for the next AWA on ESPN show which will be posted after the next episode of All-Star Wrestling.

OPEN CHALLENGE MATCH: Kokina Maximus vs. Tom Zenk

So this matchup reminds me of the match Zenk had against the debuting Big Van Vader in WCW back in was it 90 or 91.  To see Zenk backing off in terror was a memorable me,ent of that match.  I sense the same outcome here.

Zenk had no charisma or personality (imo), just a good look.  His skills were average but he just didn’t bring the fans in as a babyface.  I know he stunned DeBeers in the coal miners match awhile back and I cringed .  This will not be the case again when Kokina splats him.

AWA WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Magnificent Mimi (WC) vs. Wendi Richter

By DQ or CO

Will Ken Patera...

B) Accept Valerie's offer Eventually but by turning on his partner during a match.  So the answer is no (wink) tonight

Tommy Jammer vs. Akio Sato

Jonnie Stewart vs. Steve Doll (From Portland Wrestling)

I liked both of these guys some.  In Portland Doll was a tag and singles champion who fancied himself as a better young rock and rock express guy.  Stewart wins here

Winner of the prediction contest gets a video reward!

OPEN CHALLENGE MATCH: Kokina Maximus vs. Tom Zenk (Just can't see Zenk getting far against the future Yokozuna)

AWA WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Magnificent Mimi (WC) vs. Wendi Richter (via DQ, to set things up for a big rematch at a PPV show)

Will Ken Patera...

A) Accept Valerie's offer (not right away, but gotta go with @Theheel here and guess Patera will double-cross Rheingans during a match against the Destruction Crew)

B) Turn it down

Tommy Jammer vs. Akio Sato

Jonnie Stewart vs. Steve Doll (From Portland Wrestling)

Manny whipped Wahoo into the ropes and caught Wahoo coming off with a back fist to the face. Wahoo crashed to the mat. Manny stomped away on Wahoo. Manny snapped Wahoo up and locked Wahoo in a front facelock. Wahoo trying to escape as Manny cinched up on the hold. Wahoo was then able to drive Manny back-first into the buckles. Manny lost his grip on the hold and Wahoo hit Manny with a series shoulder blocks to the gut. Wahoo then hit Manny with a series of open hand chest chops. Manny staggered out of the corner. Wahoo caught Manny with a knife-edge chest chop and then hit Manny with a suplex. Manny down. Wahoo hit Manny with a diving chest chop and went for the cover. 1...2... Manny kicked out. Manny sat up and Wahoo caught Manny in a rear chinlock. Wahoo cinched up on the hold but Manny not giving up. Wahoo up and drove a series of knees into Manny's back. Wahoo snapped Manny up and whipped Manny into the corner. Wahoo moved in and blasted Manny with chops. Ref moved in to break it up as Manny had leaned back over the top rope. As the ref tried to break it up, Manny stunned Wahoo with a knee to the groin. Wahoo stumbled back. Manny moved in and popped Wahoo with another backhand to the face. Wahoo crashed to the mat. Manny for the cover. 1...2... Wahoo kicked out. Crowd cheered. Both men up and Manny caught Wahoo with a head shot and then locked Wahoo in an arm bar. Manny cinched up on the hold. Manny then pounded Wahoo's right shoulder area with his right hand. Wahoo in pain. Manny firmly locked in. Manny grabbed Wahoo by the back of the hair and yanked Wahoo down to the mat and kept Wahoo locked in the arm bar. Ref reprimanded Manny for the hair pull but Manny yelled he did nothing wrong. Crowd booed Manny. Manny briefly worked over the arm bar and then laid the arm on the mat and drove a series of knees into it. Wahoo hurting. Manny re-applied the arm bar. Manny to his feet and Wahoo to a knee with the arm bar firmly applied. Manny held onto the hold as Wahoo made it to his feet. Crowd urging on Wahoo. Manny switched to a wrist lock. Manny did the wrist burn on Wahoo. A few seconds later he did repeated the burn (spinning the wrist around in your hands). Wahoo made a fist with his free hand. Manny did a third wrist burn and Wahoo popped Manny in the chest with an open hand chest chop. Manny stunned but holding on to the wristlock. Wahoo popped Manny with another chest chop. Manny's grip loosening. Wahoo nailed Manny with a third chest chop and Manny lost his grip on the hold. Wahoo grabbed Manny by the hair, did his war dance and blasted Manny with a chop to the top of the head. Manny crashed to the mat. Crowd popped. Wahoo snapped Manny up in a side headlock. Manny struggling to free himself from the hold. Manny managed to shove Wahoo off into the ropes. Wahoo came off and Manny dived down and Wahoo jumped over Manny. Wahoo hit thee opposite ropes and came off and Manny dived down again. Wahoo jumped over Manny and hit the opposite ropes. Manny caught Wahoo and went to hit Wahoo with a hip toss but Wahoo reversed and caught Manny with a hip toss of his own. Manny up and Wahoo caught Manny with another hip toss. Manny up and Wahoo went to strike Manny with a knife-edge chest chop but Manny saw it coming and dropped to his ass in the ring.  Manny up and quickly bailed to the apron as fans booed. Ref ordered Wahoo back and started the 10-count. Manny started to climb back into the ring and Wahoo moved on him and Manny stepped back out on the apron. More boos. Manny again started to climb back in with the same result: Wahoo came over and Manny stepped back out (must be the Zbyszko stalling effect).

Ref ordered Wahoo back as the ref reprimanded Manny. Manny looked at the ref and had words with him and Wahoo had enough and came over and blasted Manny with a chop to the top of the head. Manny's legs wobbly. Wahoo reached over the ropes and picked up Manny for a bodyslam back in the ring but Manny grabbed the top rope and would not let go. Wahoo yanked on Manny a couple of times and Manny lost his grip on the top rope but the momentum caused Wahoo to stumble back and crash to the mat with Manny on top of him for the pin. 1...2... Wahoo kicked out. Wahoo up facing away from Manny and Manny caught Wahoo in the sleeper. Wahoo fighting not to submit. Manny cinched up on the hold as Wahoo looked to escape. Wahoo manuevered aroiund and was able to drive Manny back-first into the buckles. Wahoo repeated the move and Manny lost his grip on the hold. Wahoo quickly shook out the effects of the match and caught Manny with a blistering series of knife-edge chest chops. Manny staggered. Wahoo went to whip Manny into the ropes but Manny reversed and stunned Wahoo coming off with his flying burrito (flying double forearm smash) finisher. Wahoo crashed to the mat. Manny for the cover and hooked the leg. 1...2...thr... Wahoo got a shoulder up. Crowd popped. Manny pissed. Manny snapped Wahoo up and went to whip Wahoo into the ropes but Wahoo reversed and caught Manny coming off with a his big chest chop finisher. Manny crashed to the mat. Wahoo for the cover and hooked the leg. 1...2...3!!! Ref called for the bell as the crowd popped big-time.

Wahoo up and the ref raised his hand in victory.

WINNER: Wahoo - Pinfall - 9:44

ULTIMATE GAMBLE 2!!!

With my rousing success in the previous Ultimate Gamble, I've decided to spin the wheel once again.

This time, everything hinges on the:

image.png.634c3c9b7291cf3bcf3dc22cb61b16c0.png

BC Lions winning their first CFL playoff game in the '23 playoffs!

Lions win: this diary continues.

Lions lose: It's over. But, I will be dropping the remaining posts I have in the pipeline before closing it out with an epilogue.

CFL is good football!

Can you stand the anticipation???!!! It's like a kid waiting for Christmas!

GO LIONS!!!

(CFL playoffs start in two weeks.)

CLASSIC CFL ON CBC THEME:

You must be looking for an out lol.  Everyone know the Lions never win.  At least if Winnipeg wins 1 more regular season game the Lions finish 2nd in the West and would host the equally bad Stampers or Riders.  Which means the odds are with the AWA.  But if you put the diary on the Canuck’s winning the Stanley Cup the show is over!

The CFL really needs a 10th team. They need to resurrect that Nova Scotia project they had going until earlier this year. You could see a 6-12 team hoist the Grey Cup. SMH.

Right now, life is not happy in the land of the Canucks. I did want them in the Cup final against the Rangers in '94 and the Bruins in 2012.

Dude if you want to end the diary already just do it and move on to something else and stop bringing football into the mix, This is a wrestling forum you know.

You're right. If I just wanted to end it then I should have just pulled the plug.  I've got quite a few shows and behind the scenes posts done waiting to be dropped. If I really wanted to shut it down without a reason, I certainly would not have typed all these still-waiting posts up. I'm hedging my bets, if you will.

I just think the gambling angle adds a new dimension to it. Makes it more interesting to see what happens here. Like driving past a car crash. You gotta look whether you want to or not.

(PREVIOUS STORYLINE POST: Ultimate Gamble 2!)

APRIL 1990

AWA HQ - ST. LOUIS PARK, MN

CONFERENCE CALL

On the phone: Bill Watts, Jim Crockett, Jerry Jarrett

Bill: So, Jerry. Give us the scoop on Dundee.

Jerry: He'll do it. He likes the idea of being a heel commentator on a regular basis.

Bill: Hot damn!

Jim: Great news, Jerry.

Bill: Pedicino is all but signed sealed and delivered as well. I'm looking forward to unveiling them as the new ESPN announce team at WrestleRock.

Jerry: Well, I did have some bad news.

Jim: What?

Blll won't be able to start until end of the month due to other obligations.

Bill: Shit. Well, we can roll Pedicino and Dundee out at the June tapings in Vegas, then.

Guess it's gonna be Lee Marshall and James Blears on the call. Maybe we can let Blears say his goodbye there.

Jim: Not a bad idea. He's worked hard for the AWA over the years.

Bill: Still gotta let Lee and James know we're moving on from them as our announcers. Blears is gone and Marshall will handle backstage interviews when the new teams arrive.

Jim: Wait! I've got it!

Since the All-Star Wrestling team is already signed, why don't we have them announce WrestleRock? We'll unveil Jack Reynolds and my brother David there.

Jerry: I like it.

Bill: Then let's run with that. It'll be Reynolds and Crockett on the call and Nelson will still do the ring announcing.

Jim: Sounds like a plan.

Bill: Jerry, remind me to smack Bill when he arrives in Vegas for screwing with WrestleRock.

Everyone laughed.

Bill: Jim, I know who you've been talking to lately. Did you sign him to a deal?

Jim: No deal yet. But he's coming. Just gotta hammer out a few small details.

Jerry: He'll be an excellent pick up for the promotion.

Bill: Let's get him signed and reveal him to the fans at WrestleRock.

Jim: Things are really going great guns right now for us.

The secretatry knocked on Crockett's office door.

Jim: Just  a minute, you guys. Come in.

The secretary came in and handed Crockett a note. Crockett read it and smiled.

Watts, who was sitting across from Crockett, wondered about the note.

Bill: Well, what does the note say?

Jim: It's from Eric. He says he's booked the Mecca Arena in Milwaukee for September 15th and 16th. We've got our venue for the Super Clash 5 pay-per-view.

Watts let out a hearty laugh and slammed his hand down on the desk.

Watts: It's like we keep hitting 21!We've got great momentum right now! Let's keep it going!

Jim: Jerry, do you think Lawler would be willing to come in and work a match at Super Clash 5?

Jerry: I don't see why not. Have you got any plans for him yet?

Bill: No. But if he agrees to work the show, I'm sure we'll have a prime slot waiting for him.

Jim: Let's work on getting that taken care of.

Bill: Things right now are really breaking in our direction.

But how long would it be before the positive movement of the new era AWA reversed course???

so what do you plan to do after this is finished? If I may make a suggestion I can't really play tew myself cause it won't run on my tablet, but what if you run a diary where instead of going to Eastern Championship Wrestling and turning it extreme, Paul heyman agrees to sign with wwf in 1993 and act as the head booker for it's new flagship show Monday night raw?

No idea, honestly. I'd be back eventually. But, I'd have to plan, research and write so it would take a few months.

I'm sorry, S912, the only WWF I'd do is before 1984 when Backlund was the reigning champion. Call it an allergy to the WWF. I've liked some of the stuff they've done over the last 40 years. But much of it makes want to go out and beat my head on the sidewalk. Gotta admit I like Gunther, the Bloodline, LA Knight and Brock Lesnar, though.

LATE APRIL 1990

AWA HQ - ST. LOUIS PARK, MN

CONFERENCE CALL

On the call: Deborah Harry, John Waters. Jim Crockett, Bill Watts. Jerry Jarrett

After the initial pleasantries, the group got down to business.

Jim: So, Deb and John, how did discussions go with ESPN?

Deb: It was a mixed bag.

John: There was a hang-up on one key issue.

Bill: What was that?

Deb: We wanted a guarantee in the contract that the show could only be postponed, pushed into another time-slot,  a maximum of five times a year for the duration of the contract. We made it clear that we want the show to be in a stable slot and not bounced around like it sometimes is now. ESPN could not give us that guarantee so we balked at a deal.

John: Right now, negotiations with the sports network are at a stand-still.

The rest of the deal looks good. They said they wanted to give us two slots a year for two-hour specials. They'd help defray the cost of producing the program. We discussed production upgrades and they were on board.

Deb: One guy in the discussions said he wanted us to pattern the show along the lines of the WWF and nix any and all blood.

Thankfully, no one else was too keen on that idea. They understood our pitch to be the alternative to the WWF and that means a
sports-like presentation.

Bill: We're gonna have to explore other networks just in case the deal with ESPN crumbles.

John: Deb and I discussed that over a joint and pizza. We looked at the cable landscape. No chance for USA or WTBS. But, there are two networks we could seriously negotiate with because of Deb's background.

Jim: What are those?

John: MTV and VH1.

Before you say anything, VH1 has a huge cable clearance across the country. And it's designed to appeal to an older demo in their 20s and 30s.

Bill: That doesn't sound too bad. And MTV has an even bigger clearance and a history with wrestling.

Jerry: Would they want any control over content?

Deb: Don't know. Would have to talk to them first.

Jim: MTV or VH1 could be our ace in the hole. Deb and John, see what you can do on those fronts.

Deb: We've also been contacted by a network in another country about airing a show.

Bill: What country?

Deb: Canada. And it's CBC, the largest broadcaster in the country, that wants he show.

Jim: Wouldn't we have to tape shows in Canada for airing up there?

Deb: Have to double check on that one.

Bill: If we can't just send a tape of our ESPN show up there, I say we hold off until further notice. Going up there at this time and filming would be cost-prohibitive.

If they want one of our shows taped here, fine. Let them have it. It's good exposure.

But having to travel up there every month should not be on the radar right now.

John: Gotta agree with Bill on this one.

Hey, we know some new guys are coming in. But, are you looking at signing guys from the WWF or NWA?

Bill: Not right now. The additions already on the table give us a pretty good roster. Also, John and Deb, to remain competitive, we're gonna have to give guys a minimum guarantee to jump ship.

Deb: Well, that certainly ripples the waters.

Jerry: It's something that will have to be done. The business is changing and we've got to adapt or die. Guys aren't gonna come here on a handshake deal and un-guaranteed house show money. They'll need a financial deal of some sort to come here. Remember, we bought a largely floundering promotion.

Jim: The five of us should be able to provide the cash infusion necessary to lure some guys.

Bill: But let's hold off on it and see where things go with the guys we're bringing in. No need to get ahead of ourselves. We can safely stay in the shallow end of the pool right now talent-wise.

John: I like the way this man thinks.

Bill: Thank you, John.

John: You're welcome.

Light laughter from the five.

Jim: Deb, there's something we needed to ask you.

Deb: What is it?

Jim: We're gonna try and hold WrestleRock in a larger arena next year. We were thinking of you as the rock act for the show.

Deb: Wow, a year out. Have a city planned for the event yet?

Jim: 'Frisco. The Cow Palace.

Deb: I've got a lot of fans there. And the Palace is a big venue. Let me think about it.

Bill: I think we should withhold you until we can do a stadium show somewhere.

Deb: That would be cool. We could make it a John Waters production.

John: It would be a challenge. But, I love a challenge. And at a stadium show no less.

Bill: We've got to keep building first. A stadium show is off in the future.

Jerry: How's the hunt for re-locating the AWA  going?

John: Oh yeah! It is down to two cities.

Jerry: Don't keep us in suspense, son!

John: The cities are Vegas and Phoenix.

Deb: We decided we wanted to keep the promotion out West. Florida's out because of location. L.A.'s out because of all the hoops you have to jump through business-wise and the taxation. Nevada has no state income tax and Arizona's is very small.

Bill: Vegas or Phoenix would fit the bill when it comes to luring guys here. The weather in both places ranges from mild to hot every year. But, it's sunny and there's a good quality of life in both places and it's very affordable.

Jerry: The one thing L.A. would have had going for it is it's right by the ocean. A lot of the boys love the water.

Jim: Just not as business-friendly as Nevada or Arizona.

John: We'll keep you guys updated on the negotiations with ESPN. We'll also explore the other options we talked about if this doesn't happen.

The five said their goodbyes and Deb and John dropped off the call and Bill, Jim and Jerry contiinued talking?

Was the new AWA headed to Sin City or the Valley of the Sun?

***********************************************************************************************

A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER...

Jim Crockett had taken Eric Bischoff to lunch.

The two were sitting at their table in the iconic Hi-Lo Diner. The waitress came by and took their orders.

The pair made small talk as the waitress came back with their drinks.

The convo shifted.

Jim: Eric, I wanted to pick your brain a little.

Eric: About what?

Jim: Next April or May we'll have the next WrestleRock.

What do you think of San Francisco as the city to host that show?

Eric: At the Cow Palace or a smaller venue?

Jim: The Cow Palace.

Eric: You're gonna need one helluva rock act to fill that place.

Jim: What would you think of Blondie as the rock performance for the show?

Eric: That would be pretty good, But let me think here.

The waitress brought their food.

Eric was quiet and contemplative for a couple minutes and then a huge smile covered his face.

Jim: What is it?

Eric: If next year's WrestleRock is indeed in 'Frisco, I've got the perfect act.

Jim: Who?

Eric: It's a huge band from San Francisco. Ever heard of Huey Lewis and the News?

Jim: I've heard some of their songs. I did not know they were from there. That's a great idea, Eric. That mind of yours is always working. The hometown angle should sell some tickets.

Eric: Thanks, Jim.

Eric happily took a big bite out of his sandwich.

Jim: Listen, when you've got some ideas to pitch, come see me. Bill's really into totally running the show. But, I can tell you've got innovative ideas percolating in that mind of yours. Don't be afraid to share them with me.

Erid: I really appreciate your confidence in me, Jim. I will certainly do that.

Jim: You're good at ad sales. You're good at getting arenas booked. You're good at cutting deals with ESPN to air our specials.
Can you smell that?

Eric: Smell what?

Jim: The raise you're getting in the near future.

Eric was beaming.

The two then had a pleasant lunch and conversation.

The new era AWA was changing things up rapidly!
