TNA 2004: Dutch's Way

Recommended Posts

PREVIEW: TNA Xplosion

Prior to NWA: TNA on PPV #76, TNA taped Xplosion, its syndicated television broadcast that is sent out to two networks in the United States.

With the deal inked for IMPACT to start on ESPN, Dutch couldn’t see much point in running this show now and raised his concerns with Dixie Carter.

3yvCUTy.jpg

“We’re locked into a contract with The Sunshine Network for close to a year and our contract with Syndicated broadcasters runs nearly two years.”

Once Dutch had gotten over the shock of imagining that somebody thought it was a good idea to sign with Syndication for TWO WHOLE YEARS, he proposed cancelling them to shop for a better deal. Unfortunately, this would cost money and all of that was being squared away for the Hulk Hogan deal that was never going to materialise.

So Dutch had to grin and bear it. But, he was going to get the last laugh by assigning the show the most obnoxious commentary duo in the history of the business: Scott Hudson and Simon Diamond. Oh yes, music to your ears.

As for your questions, I agree that the format looks good and 100% agree on not having the winner at the end of the segment. Make us earn it :D

Thanks for the answers guys, appreciate the feedback. :) Xplosion coming shortly!

Comments: Big money Glenn

Ooo, that's a good idea for a gimmick ;)

]Chris Hero vs. Sonny Siaki

Comments: Hero's the long term project, but Siaki still had something at this period.

Hero has odd stats on this database. High Psychology, Safety, Basics, etc etc... but his Technical stat is about 48 and it's the highest of his actual wrestling stats haha. Hopefully he keeps getting better, he works for about 6 indy promotions during my save so that should help.

Standard Singles Match

Vordell Walker vs. Ekmo (w/ Trinity)

Scott Hudson mentions on commentary that Walker has a background in Mixed Martial Arts and though he puts it to decent use early on with accurate strikes and precise holds, the momentum shifts completely after Ekmo hits his signature Samoan Drop. Much to the delight of Trinity seconding the Samoan, the Wild Monkey Splash followed and referee Andrew Thomas could have counted to 10 before Walker would have flinched.

Standard Singles Match

Chris Hero vs. Sonny Siaki

Simon Diamond says that Chris Hero is one of the most well-travelled talents working on the independent circuit right now, the kind of admirable hustle that Team Jarrett may well be interested in. There’s no doubt he has a bright future as he develops his game further but he’s unfortunately a little too unpolished to negate Siaki’s impactful offence and the Siakalypse shuts this one down.

Scott Hudson patches us in, on Wednesday we will see CM Punk take on The Sandman in singles competition. Never the type to keep his cards close to his chest, Punk has some thoughts on this and we jump to a pre-taped promo in a dimly-lit room. Amateur in production, Punk is all alone.

He says that it was eye for an eye on Wednesday, just as Raven put James Mitchell on the shelf, so James Mitchell sees to it that Raven is put on the shelf too. Punk says that everything will be explained in due course and that the full picture regarding him, Julio, James Mitchell and Raven will be unveiled for all to see. We just have to be patient.

Next Wednesday, The Sandman rues his decisions when he’s put in the same hospital ward as his dear friend Raven.
”Quote The Gathering, nevermore!”

Standard Tag Team Match

Gilbertti and Young vs. The Disciples of the New Church (Sinn & Slash)

Diamond has been having his issues with Gilbertti lately and is blatantly biased on commentary, applauding everything Young does whilst scrutinising everything that Glenn does. As a unit, the Team Jarrett duo are relatively ruthless here and troubled only when Young has to save Gilbertti from a Sinn Kick.

It’s a move he only got hit with because he got careless according to Simon, but what is not careless is the ‘wicked’ Spinebuster that Young hits on Sinn before Gilbertti comes off the top with a mercifully conclusive Diving Elbow Drop.

We jump to a pre-taped promo in the interview room with D’Lo Brown, who will fight Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on Wednesday.

D’Lo says that TNA has been putting up with Team Jarrett, they think they own the place, they think they can call the shots but Erik Watts has reminded everybody that’s not the case. The NWA World Heavyweight Championship has the richest history of any title in professional wrestling and that’s the only power that Jarrett and his cronies have.

D’Lo says that on Wednesday, all of that power will change course when he captures that championship for the first time in his career.

Standard Singles Match

Sonjay Dutt vs. Elix Skipper

Hudson explains that this match is on Xplosion because neither competitor was featured in Ultimate-X 2, despite Skipper’s obvious impact on that match. Dutt is a youngster that is certainly showing potential, he has agility and athleticism in spades, combined with a dynamic moveset that keeps his opponents on their toes. All that said, Diamond argues that Skipper has so many ways to win a match and praises him as more formidable and more technically gifted.

It ultimately comes down to Sonjay’s lack of experience against the more sagely veteran that “Primetime” is. Skipper gets his knees up against a 450 Splash, the Bombay Buster having not dazed him enough to leave him prey to such a high-risk maneuver. With the damage done on the ribs, Skipper locks in a Modified Octopus Hold, the Skippermission! and the “Playa from the Himalaya” submits to fight another day at the 11:39 mark.

<p>PREVIEW: NWA:TNA on PPV #77</p><p> </p><p>

That will probably be the only prediction contest for Xplosion... As you can see, nobody in my game world watches the show. 25,000 viewers haha. It's mostly a pointless thing that I am contractually obligated to book and I doubt anything noteworthy will happen besides the booking of talent you might recognise. </p><p> </p><p>

Not just that but I like to wait until everybody can get their predictions in, which means posting a preview and waiting 4-5 days. I've already booked up to mid-February in TEW and just want to get on with the diary and get to the good stuff. So no more hold ups with useless B-shows, let's get this show on the road!</p><p> </p><p>

Will 3Live Kru’s performance of “Beware” be interrupted? If so, by who? Yes, by Gillberti and D. Young

Will Michael Shane interfere in the X-Division match? No, but Elix can

You could just post results of Xplosion, without writing the whole thing up. Sorta like a pre-show

Agree on not doing predictions for Xplosion, especially since I didn't do that well. :D

Haha I like your logic. Siaki winning probably surprised a few people, but his overness is between 10 and 15 points higher than Chris Hero's at this point. I'm sure the match would have got a much higher rating but it got dinged as both guys are viewed as "insignificant" by the fans. That's something that kinda puts me off writing the show actually, I know these matches would have good action but I'd have to constantly explain the low rating they're getting from the crowd not caring about who is in the ring. :D

Yeah, I will probably do something like that once Impact starts or just make it really short format stuff that people can read in a few minutes. I'm not sure, I've got the first few written up so I'll probably post full shows for the first month and then we'll see after that. :)

NWA: TNA on PPV! #77

Standard Tag Team Match

America’s Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm) vs. Red Shirt Security (Kevin Northcutt & Legend)

Mike Tenay explains that Jarrett blames Kid Kash for last week’s defeat and has sent the Red Shirts out to do their business alone this week. This one predictably breaks down into something resembling a bar brawl, just four big dudes slugging it out! That’s a rough situation for Northcutt & Legend though, they are strong and rugged athletes in their own right but hardly able to stand toe-to-toe with Harris & Storm when it comes to fisticuffs.

Their superiority is proven true when the “Cowboy” decks Legend with the Last Call, making sure the Canadian stays put on the outside so Harris can do his business on the inside. The “Wildcat” ducks a lazy clothesline from Northcutt before the Catatonic captures the three.

In the Team Jarrett private locker room, Glenn Gilbertti and Simon Diamond are engaged in a heated argument, tensions seemingly having boiled over at the Red Shirts losing to AMW. David Young and Johnny Swinger try to get between the two and play peacemaker but it’s only stopping the two from getting physically aggressive with one another whilst the verbal offensives continue.

Glenn accuses Diamond of not doing enough to return to the ring last week. That Shake, Rattle and Roll was no more than a jab, a man’s gotta have a better chin than that! Diamond defends himself by pointing out that if Gilbertti was that desperate for Team Jarrett to capture tag team gold, where was he last week? Couldn’t he have provided an assist or maybe took one for the team?

Gilbertti says he had an appointment at the barbershop and arrived at the event late. Not that Diamond would know anything about that, the only two words he knows in the lexicon of men’s style are ‘crew cut’!

Having heard enough, Johnny Swinger raises his voice and quietens the rabble. He lost the match last week when he tapped out to the Tequila Sunrise but tonight, he’ll make it even for Jeff Jarrett when he and he alone deals with another one of their rivals, AJ Styles. Both Diamond and Gilbertti agree on this and recognise that Jarrett might not be so mad if they pick up a victory before he arrives tonight.

Standard Singles Match

Don Harris vs. Ekmo

Don West says early on here that there’s absolutely nothing pretty about this match, just two big men trying to knock each other’s block off. We even get an old school trading of shoulder blocks, immovable object meeting immovable object!... until Ekmo moves Harris with a body splash. Don is forced to fight from underneath in this match, trying to mitigate the weight advantage by outworking his opponent. He does back Ekmo into the corner and starts raining down with lefts and rights…

HgUXKHY.jpg

“That’s Kid Kash on the ramp and he’s captured the attention of Don Harris in the ring.”

But the momentary distraction from this presence outside the ring is enough for Ekmo to regather his bearings and when Don does return his attention to the fight, he’s immediately flattened by an authoritative Samoan Drop. The Wild Monkey Splash follows and Don is left staring at the lights.

We jump to a pre-taped promo in a dimly lit room with James Mitchell, flanked on each side by CM Punk and Julio Dinero. He tells Raven that he should have done a better job when he put him on the shelf, he should have put him out for good, he should have tore off the serpent’s head so it would never sink its fangs into his flesh ever again! He’s back and he’s glad that Raven’s former students see him for what he really is.

This is when Julio Dinero pipes up and accuses Raven of losing sight of what’s important. The Gathering is about the group. When they stood inside a steel cage, putting their bodies through tables, what was in it for them? With James Mitchell as their mentor, Punk & Dinero are going to go places they never would have gone under Raven’s wing!

Punk speaks up, as he’s known to do. Raven wanted him and Dinero to be subservient forever as he chased championships on his own. They bled for his cause and laid sweat on the canvas so they could all make a better career for themselves. When they went to war with Abyss and the Red Shirts, why was it just so Raven could get a shot at the NWA title?

“What about Raven?! What about Punk? What about Dinero?”
All Raven cares about is himself and if The Sandman hasn’t found out yet, he’ll learn that lesson tonight.

Standard Singles Match

The Sandman vs. CM Punk (w/ Julio Dinero & James Mitchell)

Punk remonstrates Sandman early on for his smoking habit and his obsessive drinking, offering to set him on a better path. He reminds him that Raven doesn’t care about him and that he can become a better man in The Gathering. Obviously these pleas on deaf ears and The Sandman gets to work with left hands that leave Punk seeking solace with Dinero on the outside. But then The Sandman wipes them both out with a Flipping Senton from the apron!

This all precedes Punk regaining control with a Pepsi Twist but losing it when The Sandman counters his Corner Kick + Bulldog combination by ramming Punk sternum-first into the adjacent turnbuckles. But as The Sandman sets up for a Russian Legsweep, the pretence of this match is shattered by Julio taking Sandman’s singapore cane from the corner of the ring and smashing him on the left shoulder with it as referee Rudy Charles calls for the bell to disqualify Punk.

Post match, the assault continues with Don West commenting that it was never about the competition, The Gathering never cared about beating The Sandman, they just wanted to make an example of him. After a succession of singapore cane shots, James Mitchell directs the next move. They place a steel chair in the middle of the ring and both Punk and Dinero bring The Sandman back to his feet in a front facelock…

F3DlJSL.jpg

“That’s C.W. Anderson, an Extremist just like The Sandman, just like Raven!”

Down the ramp bolts C.W. and though Punk gets out of dodge quickly, Dinero tries exchanging fists of fire. Anderson whips him to the ropes and telegraphs his signature Spinebuster but this is the cue for Punk to grasp at Dinero’s boot and assist his partner’s unceremonious exit from the ring under the bottom rope.

As C.W. attends to The Sandman, The Gathering are as surprised as anybody by this interjection. They back up the ramp, the ponderance of their next move written across James Mitchell’s stern visage.

Standard Singles Match

AJ Styles vs. Johnny Swinger

Don West remarks how much of an upset it would be if Swinger could pull this one off and although it’s obvious that Styles is the more classy competitor of the two, the former tag team champion does hold his own. He makes this match surprisingly competitive, figuring that he cannot compare to “The Phenomenal One” if he fights fire with fire so he instead tries to nullify AJ’s highlight reel of offensive moves. He shows an impressive amount of nous when he counters the Phenomenon DDT into a Swinging Neckbreaker and both the Vertebreaker and the Swinger Stinger get him close to a victory.

But the reality is that AJ has too much for Swinger and overwhelms him once he finds his lane. Take two is better than take one, AJ executes the Phenomenon DDT this time before the Spiral Tap puts Swinger down for the three.

As we get the stage set up for 3Live Kru’s live performance, Mike Tenay and Don West hype the debut edition of TNA iMPACT! and call it the best hour of wrestling action that television will have to offer. They announce that a match that has already been put on tap for the debut broadcast, tune in to see AJ Styles take on Team Jarrett’s Kid Kash!

Wednesday. Week 1. February 2004. Only on ESPN!

“Oh you didn’t know?”

“We the 3LK!”

“Beware!”

On the stage, Konnan, BG James and Ron Killings perform their newest single, Beware. Killings is front and center, with Konnan to his right and BG some way back to the left.

“It’s the remix!”

“And we’re still getting rowdy!

Ron Killings calls himself the Suntan Superman, Konnan calls himself a hustler and says arole a lot and BG just keeps repeating ‘Oh you didn’t know?’ but the crowd seems to dig it. Maybe Tennessee has been starved of live hip-hop for some time now and this is like seeing Elvis Presley in person for the first time.

“Total Nonstop Action,

NWA TNA, we’re satisfaction.

Y’all ain’t got no party,

I’m sorry we got something for you…”

Suddenly we see a shadowy figure emerge and a mic drop...

K3IQn6M.jpg

“Shane Douglas just came out and punched BG James in the mouth with that chain wrapped around his hand!”

Konnan pursues the fleeing Shane Douglas as “The Truth” checks on BG, who is now bleeding from his mouth. This leaves Don West to remark that now he’s spitting blood when he should be spitting bars (okay, he didn’t really say that) but it appears there’s no encore as Killings and a few stage hands help BG return to his feet, with James shoving all the assistance to one side in defiance before trudging backstage on his own.

Shane Douglas has stage crashed the 3Live Kru and if their new single is anything to go by, they’re going to get
rowdy on his ass!

TNA X-Division Championship #1 Contendership

Standard Singles Match

Chris Sabin vs. Low-Ki

Mike Tenay explains early on here that Michael Shane was originally supposed to be part of this fallout from Ultimate-X 2 but was pulled from the match by TNA management due to injury. They ponder if he’ll interfere and have some say but what we do know immediately is that the match lacks the edge it might have had with Shane involved.

This one has an exhibition-like feel to it, though Low-Ki does get increasingly physical with his spicy strikes and Sabin tries to counter back by being more technical and savvy. But it’s actually Low-Ki that outwits Sabin towards the end, countering a Cradle Shock into a Victory Roll into a jumping Double Foot Stomp! Sabin tries to fight out of a Front Facelock but a Savate Kick leaves him easy pickings for the Ki Krusher and sets up a personal clash between former Triple X teammates for next week.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship

Standard Singles Match

Jeff Jarrett © (w/ Don Callis) vs. D’Lo Brown

Don West observes early on here that D’Lo is passionate and exuberant, definitely in the zone and ready to throw down. Consequently, Jarrett wants nothing to do with that and tries to stall and slow the pace, hoping that his opponent will get all of that emotion and energy out of his system. This does not work at all and just serves to make D’Lo angrier, who uses his superior stature well, beating Jarrett into the canvas and getting real close to a dethronement with the D’Lo Leg Drop.

This is where Don Callis earns his piece of the pie, engaging referee Andrew Thomas on the announce table side of the ring on the topic of his count. It’s a bit fast according to the “Management Consultant”, who demonstrates ad nauseum the exact pace the referee should be counting to.

As this is going on, D’Lo primes Jarrett for the Sky High but instead receives a Low Blow for his efforts and is easy pickings for The Stroke with Callis abandoning his gesticulations just in time for the referee to count the inevitable three.

Post match, Jeff Jarrett and Don Callis ham it up and make the most of their celebration as Mike Tenay laments their being nobody at ringside to deal with the “Management Consultant” and his ever-present irritability.

JRuVlt3.jpgY9sNA8F.jpg

“The NWA Director of Authority does not look happy…”

But Erik Watts comes out, with Goldilocks as always. He tells production to cut Jarrett’s music because he has a microphone in hand and has some things to say. It doesn’t seem to matter what the NWA put before Team Jarrett, they find a way. They’ve tried to stop interference. They’ve tried to stop people being at ringside but this has simply gone too far now. Watts makes a proposition.

“The Control of TNA Clash. Me vs. Jarrett. If I win, Don is gone. If I lose, I will resign as NWA Director of Authority. There can only be one!”

Sensing an opportunity to consolidate their control further, Jarrett accepts, albeit to minor protests from Don whose job is being put on the line. In three weeks time, Jarrett promises that we will ring in the very first TNA Impact on ESPN with Team Jarrett in complete control just as it always should have been!
