AND WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE ROYAL RUMBLE! I'm Gorilla Monsoon, alongside "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. And, Hot Rod, you look like you've already been in a rumble! Piper: That's right, Gorilla, it's like a jungle in that locker room, baby! There's guys back there, got hair on their teeth, they're ready for any kind of action! I AM FIRED UP, MAN! Monsoon: Indeed you are, Hot Rod, and what a card we have in store for this capacity crowd here tonight! First, we've got The Ultimate Warrior, defending his World Wrestling Federation Championship against Sergeant Slaughter! Piper: You better believe it, Gorilla, and I can't wait to see The Ultimate Warrior knock those big, goofy curls right off the boots of Slaughter! Monsoon: And of course, we've got the Royal Rumble match itself. 30 of the top superstars in the World Wrestling Federation today, and in that match, Hot Rod, there will be no friends, only enemies! Every man for himself!! Piper: I can't wait, man, let's GOOOOO!!! Monsoon: Let's go down to ringside and "The Fink"! The Fink: THE OPENING CONTEST OF THE ROYAL RUMBLE IS SCHEDULED FOR ONE FALL! INTRODUCING FIRST.... The Big Boss Man vs. Haku w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan leads Haku out to a chorus of boos, but the fans erupt to their feet when Boss Man's theme, "Hard Times," blares out through the stadium. As the Cobb County officer hits the ring in a sprint, Haku and Heenan quickly exit when Boss Man takes a wild swing at Heenan with his nightstick. Heenan screams at the ref to disqualify him. He obviously doesn't, and after a bit of stalling by Heenan, the match is underway. Knowing he's got to win two matches tonight to get his hands on Perfect, and subsequently Heenan, Boss Man comes out fast and furious in this one, with a series of quick right hands and a big clothesline sending Haku toppling to the ringside floor. Boss Man follows him out and gives chase to Heenan, only to be greeted with a thumb to the eye when turning his attention back to Haku. Back in the ring, Haku lands several clubbing blows to the back of Boss Man before flooring him with a vicious backhand chop. Firmly in control now, Haku drapes Boss Man over the middle rope, pushing his knee into the small of Boss Man's back, choking him with the rope. Haku breaks the hold at the count of four and feigns innocence to the ref, allowing Heenan to deliver a hefty slap to Boss Man. With that, Haku drags Boss Man back to the center of the ring and applies a shoulder claw. The hold wears Boss Man down enough for the referee to raise and drop his arm twice, but it doesn't drop the third time, and Boss Man fights back to his feet with some elbows to Haku's midsection. A few right hands follow, freeing the Boss Man to shove Haku to the corner and deliver two knees to the lower abdomen. He then whips Haku into the opposite corner and charges in, only to be met with a knee to his own stomach. A headbutt follows, which only riles up the Boss Man, who responds in kind. The two trade blows, big right hands for chops, until Haku catches a kick attempt from Boss Man, holding his leg before slapping him. Boss Man counters though with an enziguri, taking Haku off his feet. Boss Man takes advantage of the quick tide turn, sending Haku off the ropes and hitting the Boss Man Slam on the rebound for the three count at 10:02. After the match, Heenan high-tails it to the back, leaving Haku behind as the Boss Man panders to the crowd, yelling "one down, one to go!" We now go to the back, where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is interviewing an uncharacteristically furious Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Okerlund: Jake "The Snake" Roberts, I must say, I have never seen you this outwardly riled up, and I don't want to imagine the things going on in your head right now! Roberts: That's right, Gene, you don't and, Rick Martel, you don't wanna know either. Unfortunately for you though, when I get Damien back, you're gonna find out firsthand what happens when a snake is backed into a corner. Because you see.... Rick Martel suddenly bursts into frame, taking Roberts down with a steel chair. He steps back out of frame and comes back with his atomizer, spraying it into the air and basking in the mist. As Roberts stumbles back to his feet, Martel tries to spray him in the eyes in an attempt to blind him again. Luckily, Roberts is able to drop out of the line of fire just in time, leading Martel to make a quick getaway before Roberts can attempt to retaliate. Tito Santana vs. The Mountie w/ A very good match was left with an unsatisfying conclusion on Wrestling Challenge a few weeks ago when Jimmy Hart's attempts to zap Santana with The Mountie's cattle prod led to a chase out of the arena and a double count-out. After The Mountie insulted Santana's heritage and questioned his U.S. citizenship, Santana was looking to shut the Canadian lawman up once and for all here. Santana tried to be the aggressor to start this one, but The Mountie wasn't having it, constantly going to the outside to confer with Hart or stepping halfway out of the ring in an attempt to stall the match from starting. The action finally did get underway though, when Jimmy Hart grabbed Santana's foot under the bottom rope, distracting him for just the instant needed for The Mountie to attack from behind. With Santana now down, The Mountie went on the offensive, using every dirty trick in the book to keep Santana at bay. He poked him in the eyes, pulled his hair, and refused to break holds in the ropes until the referee had to pull him away. And when none of those tactics were viable, Jimmy Hart was interfering whenever he got the chance. Santana finally got a little momentum by reversing an attempted piledriver into a back body drop. He followed that up with a flurry of quick jabs and a spinning forearm to floor The Mountie once more. This prompted Hart to stick his nose in again, which instigated a chase by Santana that scared "The Mouth of the South" away from ringside. Unfortunately for Santana, The Mountie always gets his man, and tonight would be no different. Unbeknownst to Santana, The Mountie had retrieved his cattle prod from ringside while Santana and the ref were distracted by the commotion with Hart. When Santana tried to set up for a Figure Four Leglock, he was kicked away by The Mountie and into the referee, who was momentarily turned around into the ropes. That gave The Mountie just the time he needed to zap Santana in the shoulder with the prod without the referee seeing and toss it under the bottom rope. A quick rollup followed, and with a handful of tights for good measure, The Mountie is your winner at 15:56. Dino Bravo vs. Earthquake w/ After an advertisement for the WWF fan club, we come back to the stadium to find Dino Bravo in street clothes, already in the ring. He grabs a microphone, but he's interrupted by Earthquake's theme music before he can speak. Earthquake and Jimmy Hart make their way to the ring, with Hart yelling incoherently into his megaphone all the way there. Once in the ring, Earthquake and Bravo go nose to nose. The faceoff is short-lived though, as Bravo backs away and begins to speak. Bravo: I know I am the one who wanted this match, but I can't wrestle tonight. I was injured in my last match, and the doctors won't clear me for two more weeks. Hart: Yeah right, Dino! Everybody knows you've just got cold feet because you're afraid of the Earthquake, baby! Bravo: The world's strongest man fears no man! I will gladly destroy Earthquake in two weeks. But you're not getting off that easy tonight, Earthquake! Because I've got a replacement for this match! A tugboat horn suddenly bellows from the stadium sound system as Tugboat makes his way to the ring to a good ovation. A visibly worried Earthquake exits the ring, with Jimmy Hart not far behind. Tugboat and Bravo shake hands, but Tugboat suddenly pulls Bravo in for a hard clothesline. Hart and Earthquake's expressions of worry quickly turn to those of jubilation, and they join Tugboat in the ring. From there, the two behemoths easily lay waste to the strongman, crushing him into the turnbuckle with a double avalanche splash as Hart looks on smugly. The Big Boss Man vs. The Barbarian w/ With Haku defeated Earlier, The Big Boss Man now just needed a victory over The Barbarian to secure a shot at Mr. Perfect's Intercontinental title. Heenan was going to ensure that wasn't an easy task though, as both Haku and the Intercontinental Champion himself, Mr. Perfect, joined "The Brain" at ringside. Similar to earlier, The Boss Man is a man on a mission to open this bout as he goes right at the brutish islander. The strategy wasn't as effective as earlier though, due to constant distractions by Heenan, Haku, and Perfect. They distracted the ref, they distracted The Boss Man, and just wreaked havoc in general. This gave The Barbarian a distinct advantage for most of the match, and it seemed Boss Man would have little chance of getting that second win he so desperately needed and wanted. Boss Man persevered though, never staying down for long and never shying away from fighting all of the Heenan Family members at once. And it was that determination that led him to victory. While attempting to fight off an interfering Mr. Perfect with the referee distracted by Heenan and Haku, Boss Man ducked a brass knuckle shot from Perfect, causing The Barbarian to be inadvertently knocked out. A series of huge right hands and a clothesline cleared Perfect from the ring, as the referee turned his attention back to the match just in time to count the three for the new #1 contender, The Big Boss Man! After the match, the Big Boss Man stands over a fallen Barbarian, pointing his nightstick menacingly at a retreating Haku, Perfect, and Heenan! Now, some superstars give their thoughts on the Royal Rumble match. Animal: IT'S GONNA BE THE LEGION OF DOOM AGAINST 28 OTHER MEN IN THAT RING IN THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH. AND THOSE OTHER 28 MEN ARE GONNA BE THE UNDERDOGS! AND WHEN WE'VE GONE THROUGH THOSE 28 OTHER GUYS, AND IT'S JUST THE HAWK AND THE ANIMAL LEFT STANDING, YOU'RE GONNA SEE THE MOST BRUTAL BATTLE THIS CITY HAS EVER WITNESSED! AND EITHER WAY, ONCE IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE, THE LEGION OF DOOM WILL BE THE ONLY GUYS LEFT STANDIN'! TELL 'EM, HAWK! Hawk: AHHHHHHHHHH, WHAT A RUUUUSSHH!!!!!!! Mr. Perfect: The Royal Rumble match! 30 men enter, one man leaves! And it's gonna take an outstanding performance to be that last man standing. You might even say it'll take the Perfect performance! And who knows perfection better, than your Intercontinental Champion, Mr. Perfect! The Mountie: Just like earlier tonight when that burrito-breathed, Tito Santana got what was comin' to him, the other 29 men in the Royal Rumble will get what's coming to them later, because The Mountie ALWAYS gets his man!! The Lumberjack: I don't care if it's The Undertaker! I don't care if it's Earthquake! I don't care if it's Hulk Hogan himself! I'm comin' to the Royal Rumble to chop down all the competition, and just like the mighty oak, The Lumberjack will still be standing when they're all gone! Ricky Steamboat: Throw out your dictionaries before the Royal Rumble match because once that bell sounds, the words friend and foe no longer exist. And once that Final bell has sounded, it will be The Dragon flyin' high above the ashes of the other 29 competitors! "Macho King" Randy Savage: Oooh yeah, it's the Royal Rumble, and the Macho King has a lot on his mind, yeah. I'm thinking about the Royal Rumble match, and I'm thinking about the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship, yeah. YOUR DAYS AS CHAMPION ARE NUMBERED, ULTIMATE WARRIOR, YEAH, AND THE MACHO KING IS NEXT IN THE LINE OF SUCCESSION, YEAH! But first, I've got a Royal Rumble to win, yeah. And if you're one of those other 29 men, then LOOK OUT! And prepare to bow down to your king, yeah, because you are lookin' at the next World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion, and you are lookin' at the winner of the 1991 Royal Rumble, OOOOOH YEEAAAAHHH!! "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase & Virgil vs. Dusty Rhodes & Dustin Rhodes We're back to action now as "Common Man Boogie" signals the entrance of "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes and his blue-chipper, son Dustin, who brings the crowd to their feet with their infectious energy. The abrasive, but admittedly very catchy "It's All About The Money" ruins everyone's mood though, bringing out the hated "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and his bodyguard Virgil. Virgil hesitated for a bit before finally holding the ropes open for DiBiase to enter, prompting DiBiase to bark an order at him to remove his jacket. Virgil hesitates there too, but after DiBiase says something into his ear, he relents and removes DiBiase's jacket. After the pre-match drama, Dusty decides to start for his team, which prompts DiBiase to order Virgil to start for his. The bodyguard seems game at first but quickly becomes uninterested after Dusty hits him with a few big elbows, knocking him back into the corner with DiBiase. Virgil tries to tag out, but DiBiase refuses and Dusty quickly drops Virgil again, hitting several more elbows and an atomic drop. A tag to Dustin just led to more of the same for Virgil, as the youngster continued the elbow onslaught started by his father before hitting a crisp vertical suplex for a near fall. Dustin then set up for a bulldog, but Virgil slipped out to his knees and took out Dustin's right leg with a chop block. DiBiase was finally willing to tag in at this point and went to work on Dustin's injured leg. Several dozen stomps, a spinning toe-hold, and a slam into the ring post later, and Dustin was in prime position to be finished off. Not satisfied with simply winning the match though, and wanting to add insult to injury, DiBiase pulled some crumpled-up cash from his trunks and tried to stuff it into Dustin's mouth. This drew an irate Dusty into the ring, but he was stopped by the referee and DiBiase held Dustin up from behind so Virgil could hit him with the Million Dollar Championship. Virgil lined up his shot and charged in, but Dustin moved and Virgil hit DiBiase instead. With DiBiase now down and Virgil ejected from the ring by the referee, Dustin very slowly drug himself to his corner and tagged in his Dad. By this point, DiBiase had come around and was looking for a tag too. Virgil wasn't in his corner though, as he was pacing back and forth outside the ring, mad at himself for accidentally hitting DiBiase. DiBiase yelled for him to come back, but it was too late, and a fired-up Dusty went on the offensive. He rammed DiBiase into the turnbuckle, poking and prodding him with swift, left and right-hand jabs and chops. Then he whipped DiBiase into the opposite corner and charged in with a huge running elbow. Another whip sent DiBiase violently back into the turnbuckles he started against, and Dusty charged in for another elbow. DiBiase jumped out of the way this time though, and Dusty got nothing but turnbuckle, allowing DiBiase to quickly roll him up from behind for the sudden pinfall at 11:01. After the match, DiBiase demands a microphone and calls Virgil into the ring. DiBiase: "If I've said it once, I've said it a MILLION times. Everybody has a price for The Million Dollar Man, and nobody, NOBODY crosses The Million Dollar Man without paying a price! And tonight, Rhodes, you and that punk kid of yours paid the price. Now, Virgil, YOU IDIOT! You've paid the price before too, so get my Million Dollar belt and wrap it around my waist!" Virgil hesitates but slowly makes his way ringside and retrieves the Million Dollar Championship belt. DiBiase: "Now, get back in here and bring me my belt! NOW!!" Virgil hesitates once more but does as he's told. DiBiase: "Now, wrap it around my waist and do the job I pay you to do!" In an act of defiance, Virgil drops the Million Dollar belt on the mat. DiBiase: "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING? You get down there RIGHT NOW and pick up that belt and wrap it around my waist! Need I remind you one more time about your family? About your MOTHER?! NOW PICK IT UP!!" Defeated, Virgil drops down on one knee and grabs the belt. DiBiase momentarily turns his back, and you can tell Virgil is about to clock him. He doesn't get the chance though, as he's blindsided... <details> <summary>SPOILER</summary> by a debuting Sid!! Then much to the delight of DiBiase, Sid annihilates Virgil with a "Vicious" Chokeslam and a Powerbomb. DiBiase laughs maniacally and picks the microphone back up. DiBiase: "See, I told you! EVERYBODY'S got a price for The Million Dollar Man!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA" </details> WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match The Ultimate Warrior © vs. Sgt. Slaughter w/ General Adnan w/ The time for talking was done as it was time for the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship match! Sgt. Slaughter arrives first to an unbelievable level of jeers and some trash thrown by fans as an exclamation to their hatred. Polar opposite was defined when the Ultimate Warrior entered, as the roof nearly blew off the Hoosier Dome! Warrior hit the ring in his usual sprint, and Slaughter and Adnan were waiting there for him. They tried to clothesline the Warrior with an Iraqi flag, but he ducked and rebounded off the ropes with a double clothesline, flattening both men and breaking the flag's pole in the process. Then the Warrior picked up the Iraqi flag and ripped it in half, drawing a massive cheer from the over 60,000 in attendance. After the Ultimate Warrior stuffed a piece of the flag in Slaughter's mouth and got a few more shots in with the broken flagpole, Referee Earl Hebner finally cleared the ring of debris and called for the bell to start the match. With Adnan now tending to his wounds in the back, it looked like this would be a simple squash match for The Warrior. He tossed Slaughter from pillar to post, only letting up momentarily to catch his breath and pander to the crowd. After a violent whip to the corner sent Slaughter over the top rope to the outside though, Sensational "Queen" Sherri ran to ringside and kneeled beside the apron opposite Warrior and Slaughter. After Warrior got a few big, right hands in and slammed Slaughter's face into the ring apron, he tossed him back into the ring. The Warrior would then hit a flying shoulder tackle off three sets of the ropes before being tripped up by Sherri while going for one off the fourth. This prompted Warrior to exit the ring and chase Sherri back down the aisle. As he was almost to the back, he was ambushed... by a waiting "Macho King" Randy Savage. Savage quickly threw the Warrior into a steel barricade and hit him in the back with the first foreign object he could find, a portable stage light. Savage then made a quick exit as we see Slaughter distracting Hebner in the ring. Hebner eventually began his ten count, but knowing he couldn't win the title by count-out, Slaughter hurried down the aisle and drug Warrior back to the ring. When they got back to the ring, Slaughter rolled Warrior under the ropes and immediately went for the pin, only getting a two count. Frustrated, Slaughter brought Warrior back to his feet and hit a Gutbuster for another two count. Slaughter quickly got back to his feet and dropped a few quick elbows to Warrior's lower back, then picked him up and applied a Bear Hug. After an agonizing three minutes that must've seemed like an eternity, the Warrior was able to fight his way out with some big, right hands. But his back gave out on an attempted body slam, and Slaughter was right back in control. Slaughter would then hit a Body Slam of his own, a Backbreaker, and then a few vicious stomps to Warrior's lower back before applying the Camel Clutch! What Slaughter didn't realize though, was the Warrior's feet were under the ropes, so when Hebner yelled for Slaughter to let him go, Slaughter mistakenly thought he'd been awarded the match by submission. He began to celebrate, emphatically raising his arms in the air. By the time Hebner convinced Slaughter that he hadn't won the match, Warrior had made his way to the ropes and began to shake them, drawing energy from the now rejuvenated crowd. Slaughter went back on the attack, but Warrior just absorbed the shots and went on a tear. Three running clotheslines and a soaring shoulder block then proceeded the Warrior Splash. Before Warrior could initiate the pinfall, Sherri rushed back to ringside carrying the Macho King's scepter. Warrior drug her into the ring over the top rope, causing her to drop the scepter on the mat. Slaughter managed to get back to his feet by this point and pulled Hebner into the corner to distract him again. Suddenly, Randy Savage was back on the scene. He picks up his scepter as the Warrior lifts Sherri into a Gorilla Press. Warrior turns around to see Savage in the ring, and Savage blasts him in the head with the scepter, causing him to drop Sherri safely to the mat, who then rolls under the bottom rope to the outside. Savage then makes a hasty exit as Slaughter finally allows Hebner to turn his attention back towards the Warrior, and Slaughter covers for the three count at 10:37. We have a new World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion! Or do we??? As soon as Slaughter's theme begins to play, and just before Howard Finkel can announce him as the winner, several WWF officials quickly hurry to the ring to speak with Hebner. After a brief conversation, Hebner makes his way over to Howard Finkel. Another quick conversation follows before Finkel addresses the crowd: Howard Finkel: Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just been informed that as a result of interference by Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri, Sergeant Slaughter has been DISQUALIFIED! Therefore, your winner and STILL World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion, THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR!! For the final time tonight, we go backstage to "Mean" Gene Okerlund, who's joined by Hulk Hogan! Gene: Hulk Hogan, the time is upon us, as we are just minutes away from the Royal Rumble match! Your thoughts? Hogan: Well, you know something, "Mean" Gene! When the Hulkster thinks about the Royal Rumble match, and the Hulkster thinks about having to fight his way through 29 of the best WWF superstars, I get a little nervous, brother. But then I think about all the cards, and all the letters, and all the little Hulkamaniacs who are counting on the Hulkster, brother, and I cast all my doubts aside! But just like I said before, it doesn't matter if I win the Royal Rumble or if I lose it, brother! Because I made you a promise, Seargent Slaughter! And the Hulkster always keeps his promises, jack! SO WHATCHA GONNA DO, SERGEANT SLAUGHTER, AND WHATCHA GONNA D... Gene: What th.. <details> <summary>SPOILER</summary> Before Hogan can finish his promo, he's leveled by Nikita Koloff with a steel chain! "The Russian Nightmare" is relentless in his assault on the Hulkster. He brutally whips him with the chain before wrapping it around his fist and landing several shots to Hogan's ribs before security and WWF officials can pull him off. Koloff pushes several officials to the ground and escapes just before Indianapolis police officers arrive on the scene. </details> **July 2019 Match of the Month Winner** The Royal Rumble Match Monsoon: With the Royal Rumble match now just moments away, Hot Rod, what's the status of the Hulkster gonna be?? Do you think he'll be able to compete? Piper: Everyone knows I've never been the biggest fan of Hogan, but I wouldn't wish what just happened on anyone. But if anyone can come back from a beating like that and still compete in this match, it's Hulk Hogan! Monsoon: Indeed! I guess we'll find out soon enough. Let's go down to "The Fink." Howard Finkel: Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now time, FOR THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH!! The rules are simple. Two men start in the ring, and every two minutes thereafter, another man enters. This continues until all 30 men have entered the match. To be eliminated, a competitor must be thrown over the top rope and to the floor. The last man standing in the ring after all 30 men have entered will be declared the winner! AND NOW, the moment you've all been waiting for. The man who drew NUMBER 1!! Power and Glory's theme hits, and it's the "Power" half of the team, the mighty Hercules, who's drawn the number 1 spot! w/ Out to a decent ovation, Seattle's Greg "The Hammer" Valentine is the second entrant. The bell rings, and we're underway as the two slowly circle each other before locking up collar and elbow style. Hercules takes the quick advantage with a knee to the gut of Valentine and some clubbing forearms to his back. Valentine does his best to shrug them off and hits some solid forearm shots of his own, staggering Hercules. Valentine tries to push him into the corner, but Hercules reverses and rams Valentine into the turnbuckles. He lifts him to attempt an elimination as the music hits for entrant number 3. Hawk from the Legion of Doom hits the ring and immediately attacks Hercules, sparing Valentine. Hawk and Hercules trade some stiff punches and kicks as Valentine smartly hangs back. He's not able to for long though, as Hercules temporarily staves off Hawk and refocuses his efforts on Valentine. Hercules gave up on Hawk too soon though, as Hawk attacks him again, and Valentine and Hawk manage to dump him over the top for our first elimination. The two men take a short breather and await entrant number four. Eliminated: Hercules(by Valentine/Hawk) Still in: Greg Valentine, Hawk He may be perfect, at least in his own mind, but Mr. Perfect certainly didn't draw the perfect number in this one, as it would be quite the feat to win from a draw this early. Perfect certainly gets in no hurry to make it to the ring, and it pays off when Valentine goes back on the offensive against Hawk, ending their temporary truce break. By the time Perfect gets to the ring, Valentine is doing a pretty good number on Hawk, and Perfect joins in as theme music for the fifth entrant hits the arena sound system. It's The Lumberjack in the number five spot. He jogs to the ring and helps Hawk even up the odds a bit, setting his sights on Greg Valentine. The Lumberjack and Valentine are pretty similar in their approach, which leads to an entertaining pairing in the early going of this one. Hawk and Perfect couldn't be much more different in their styles though, and it's mostly Hawk's who wins out, as he pretty much has his way with Perfect until entrant number six arrives. The Ugandan warrior, Saba Simba, runs down to join the fray as the ring's getting a little fuller now. Simba surprisingly goes after Hawk, giving Perfect a desperately needed breather from Hawk's relentless attacks. At this point, Valentine dumps The Lumberjack over the top rope, only to see him land on the apron. Valentine tries to push him off with his foot but is unsuccessful. w/ It's the "Glory" portion of Power and Glory out next, Paul Roma. Piper ribs on him a bit as he makes his way down to the ring, calling him "Romeo." At least it seems like a rib, but with Piper, it's possible he just thinks that's actually his name. Roma makes a beeline for Hawk, for some reason, and very quickly regrets it as he's almost dumped out immediately. Luckily for him, he lands on the apron and desperately hugs the bottom rope to prevent elimination. Hawk doesn't get a chance to push the issue though, as Perfect pokes him in the eye. The clock ticks down from 10 to 1, and entrant number eight is Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat! Steamboat makes it seven competitors now, with no one eliminated since Hercules, just moments before Mr. Perfect entered at number 4. Speaking of Perfect, Steamboat goes right after him and quickly floors the Intercontinental Champion with a series of chops. His momentum is temporarily halted by Paul Roma, but Steamboat easily tosses Roma over the top rope for the second elimination. Eliminated: Paul Roma(by Steamboat) Still in: Greg Valentine, Hawk, Mr. Perfect, The Lumberjack, Saba Simba, Ricky Steamboat The Rockers' first representative of the match, Marty Jannetty, draws number 9 and gets a good pop from the crowd. He makes an odd number of participants so he bides his time in the corner until an opportunity opens up. It doesn't really though, and he eventually decides to try and help Ricky Steamboat eliminate Mr. Perfect. w/ The Mountie, the first of a few "double duty" entrants for the match, is accompanied by Jimmy Hart as the man who drew number 10. In typical Mountie fashion, he goes straight for the Ugandan Warrior, Saba Simba, shouting something about immigration. Simba's one tough individual though, and he easily overpowers The Mountie with his brute strength, tossing him into the corner like a ragdoll. Before he can follow up on his attack, Mr. Perfect makes it 2 on 1, as he and The Mountie manage to get Simba over the top rope and onto the apron. As they fight to knock him the rest of the way out, Steamboat goes after Perfect again, leaving just The Mountie to finish the job, and he's able to with an assist from Jimmy Hart. Eliminated: Saba Simba(by the Mountie) Still in: Greg Valentine, Hawk, Mr. Perfect, The Lumberjack, Ricky Steamboat, Marty Jannetty, The Mountie w/ The massive Warlord is our 11th participant, accompanied by the Doctor of Style, Slick. Warlord does quite the number on all of the faces, leaving the other heels to catch a breather. He doesn't manage to eliminate anyone though, as Hawk finally slows him down by hitting a Powerslam. In a fortunate coincidence, Marty Jannetty's tag team partner Shawn Michaels is the 12th entrant, just in time to save his partner from elimination at the hands of Valentine. The Rockers double team Valentine for a bit but can't eliminate him before The Mountie attacks Jannetty, halting their momentum. Tito Santana drew lucky number 13, and sure enough, it really was lucky, as The Mountie is still in the ring. Tito flies down the aisle and into the ring as The Mountie realizes he's the next entrant and immediately tries to beg off. Tito scoffs at the attempt and bombards The Mountie with a furious sequence of forearms and chops before dropping him with his patented flying forearm smash. The Mountie makes his retreat though, rolling under the bottom rope to the outside before Tito can take things further. Meanwhile, Warlord has eliminated The Lumberjack, and Mr. Perfect has eliminated Marty Jannetty. Eliminated: The Lumberjack(by Warlord), Marty Jannetty(by Mr. Perfect) Still in: Greg Valentine, Hawk, Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, The Mountie, The Warlord, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana Business picks up, so to speak, when Animal of the Legion of Doom enters at number 14. He enters the ring to find Hawk being double-teamed by Warlord and The Mountie, who managed to get back in the ring when Tito got into it with Mr. Perfect. Animal tries to help his partner out, but a pesky Greg Valentine attacks him first, and Warlord and The Mountie manage to eliminate Hawk. As the two men celebrate, a furious Animal tosses Valentine aside and tries a double clothesline on Mountie and Warlord. The Mountie dodges the attack though, and Animal only manages to hit Warlord, sending him over the top rope and to the floor. This leaves The Mountie to sneak up from behind and eliminate Animal, whose momentum had left him leaning slightly over the top rope. Eliminated: Hawk(by the Mountie & Warlord), Warlord(by Animal), and Animal(by the Mountie) Still in: Greg Valentine, Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, The Mountie, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana The British Bulldog marks the halfway point of the Rumble at number 15. He makes The Mountie his number 1 priority, and Tito Santana joins in as they effortlessly eliminate the crooked lawman. Eliminated: The Mountie(by British Bulldog & Tito Santana) Still in: Greg Valentine, Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana Rick Martel and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart are entrants number 16 and 17, as the ring is starting to fill back up again. There's a bit of a lull here with some of the earlier entrants beginning to tire out. Entrant number two Greg Valentine and entrant number 4 Mr. Perfect, for example, had been in the match for nearly 35 minutes and almost half an hour respectively. Ricky Steamboat was now closing in on 20 minutes as well. The lull didn't last long, as Rick Martel's worst nightmare came true in the form of Jake "The Snake" Roberts at number 18! Roberts hits the ring in a rage, decking absolutely anyone in his path on his way to "The Model." Martel doesn't bother trying to beg off or run, he really didn't have a chance to anyway, and the two men go at it. Roberts hits a flurry of quick left jabs and a big right to take Martel down. He brings him right back up and hits a very stiff short-arm clothesline before calling for the DDT. Martel hits him with a low blow instead and immediately exits the ring and jumps the barricade before making his escape through the fans. Once Roberts recovers to see Martel has fled, he does the same, running out through the crowd in hot pursuit of "The Model." At some point during all the Roberts/Martel fuss, Greg Valentine's night comes to an end at the hands of Mr. Perfect after a nearly 38-minute performance. Eliminated: Rick Martel(by himself), Jake Roberts(by himself), and Greg Valentine(by Mr. Perfect) Still in: Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana, The British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart w/ Outnumbered by faces, Mr. Perfect takes a short breather outside as The Undertaker makes his way to the ring accompanied by Brother Love. Perfect couldn't have timed his temporary exit any more perfectly if he tried either since Undertaker went on a rampage. He easily floored everyone in the ring, taking down Steamboat, the British Bulldog, and Jim Neidhart like they were children, before eliminating Tito Santana and Shawn Michaels with a double clothesline. Eliminated: Tito Santana(by Undertaker) and Shawn Michaels(by Undertaker) Still in: Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart, Undertaker The Birdman, Koko B. Ware is entrant number 20 as Gorilla Monsoon makes an announcement: Monsoon: Wait a minute, Hot Rod! I have just received word that Hulk Hogan has NOT been cleared to compete in this match by WWF doctors, as they fear he may have internal bleeding after that vile attack by Nikita Koloff. Piper: UNBELIEVABLE! THAT JUST MAKES ME SICK! SO MANY OF THESE LITTLE KIDS CAME TO SEE THE HULKSTER AND THAT PIECE OF CRAP NIKITA KOLO..... Monsoon: Easy there, Hot Rod, I don't want you to blow a gasket! I have also been informed that it was indeed Koko B. Ware who took the Hulkster's spot in the match at number 20. Hogan's replacement didn't last long, quickly succumbing to the Undertaker's rampage almost the instant he entered. British Bulldog was another victim of the Undertaker shortly after that. Eliminated: Koko B. Ware(by the Undertaker), British Bulldog(by The Undertaker) Still in: Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, Jim Neidhart, The Undertaker Jim Neidhart gets lucky, as the other half of the World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Champions, Bret Hart, came out at number 21. His luck, and the mini Hart family reunion, continued at number 22 with Owen Hart. Owen, Bret, and "The Anvil" set their sights on The Undertaker, but the deadman fights them off, dropping them in quick succession with violent uppercut thrusts to the throat. Meanwhile, Steamboat and Perfect continue battling, as they've done for much of their time in the ring together. The ring got a lot fuller, in more ways than one, as Earthquake rumbled to the ring at number 23, surprisingly without the "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart. His entry quickly spelled bad news for both Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart as he eliminated them with ease while Bret Hart was preoccupied with The Undertaker. Eliminated: Owen Hart(by Earthquake) and Jim Neidhart(by Earthquake) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #21 Bret Hart, #23 Earthquake. w/ Earthquake's lack of Jimmy Hart didn't take long to be explained, as Hart accompanies #24, his newest client Tugboat to the ring. Tugboat apparently isn't an accurate moniker anymore though, as he's wearing a new singlet similar to Earthquake's, with the word "Typhoon" written across the stomach. Earthquake and Typhoon surprise everyone by attacking the Undertaker instead of one of the faces, but nothing really comes of it. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan drew number 25 and went right after former friend Typhoon, nearly eliminating the traitor before Earthquake stepped in. w/ With Kamala entering at number 26, joining Earthquake, Typhoon, and The Undertaker in the ring, there was now nearly 2500 pounds worth of girth in the match. With so many potential victims to attack, "The Ugandan Giant" seems confused at first, just slapping himself in the belly as he walked around in circles. He finally settled on Duggan as a foe, hitting him with several overhand chops to drop the patriot before going for, but missing a running splash. B. Brian Blair was unlucky entrant number 27 as he was met immediately upon entering by the Undertaker, who applied a chokehold that pushed the veteran over the top rope and to the floor. Eliminated: B. Brian Blair(by The Undertaker) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 Undertaker, #21 Bret Hart, #23 Earthquake, #24 Typhoon, #25 Jim Duggan, #26 Kamala w/ The "Macho King" got a great draw here at number 28, at least in principle, but when he got to the ring and saw all the large bodies, he made the intelligent decision to wait a bit before entering. It immediately paid dividends when Earthquake and Typhoon eliminated Kamala, only for Jim Duggan to eliminate Typhoon almost immediately afterward. Savage then entered the fray, attacking and successfully eliminating Bret Hart when Sherri distracted him from ringside. Eliminated: Kamala(by Earthquake & Typhoon), Typhoon(by Jim Duggan), and Bret Hart(by Randy Savage) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #23 Earthquake, #25 Jim Duggan, #28 Randy Savage w/ Smash of Demolition enters at the penultimate position, number 29, and Gorilla Monsoon informs us that he is replacing the injured Dino Bravo. He goes after Jim Duggan but ends up eating a Three-Point Stance Clothesline before being sent unceremoniously to the showers. Eliminated: Smash(by Jim Duggan) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #23 Earthquake, #25 Jim Duggan, #28 Randy Savage "Sup, Sup, Superfly!" starts Jimmy Snuka's theme, as he gets a nice ovation from the Indianapolis crowd as the final entrant into the 1991 Royal Rumble match. He joins Mr. Perfect, Ricky Steamboat, The Undertaker, Earthquake, Jim Duggan, and Randy Savage as the final seven men with a chance at victory. Nearly all the participants, with Savage and Snuka as the lone exceptions, are visibly exhausted at this point, which would seem to give Earthquake the advantage. And everyone must have been thinking the same thing since they all ganged up on the behemoth to oust him from the match. Eliminated: Earthquake(by everyone) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #25 Jim Duggan, #28 Randy Savage, #30 Jimmy Snuka. With the mutually beneficial elimination of Earthquake complete, it's Mr. Perfect who reverts to his usual selfish ways first, eliminating Snuka from behind. Eliminated: Jimmy Snuka(by Mr. Perfect) Still in: #4 Mr. Perfect, #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #25 Jim Duggan, #28 Randy Savage Ricky Steamboat saw what Perfect had done and decided to respond in kind, quickly eliminating a celebrating Perfect. Not before Perfect had set a new Royal Rumble record by lasting nearly 55 minutes though. Eliminated: Mr. Perfect(by Ricky Steamboat) Still in: #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #25 Jim Duggan, #28 Randy Savage With Perfect's elimination, we were down to the final four, with Steamboat paired off with old rival Randy Savage and Undertaker with fan-favorite Jim Duggan. Savage and Steamboat never missed a beat, going at it like they were currently in a heated war with Savage mostly in control as Steamboat was quite tired by this point. Steamboat never quit though, always managing to cut off Savage before he could build too much of an advantage. Undertaker had obviously slowed down a lot too, having now been in the match for over 25 minutes. However, he still had enough in the tank to sit up after absorbing a Three-Point Stance Clothesline from Duggan. And enough after that to eliminate the unsuspecting "Hacksaw" as he prematurely celebrated downing the deadman with a "HOOOOOOOOOO" to the crowd. Eliminated: Jim Duggan(by Undertaker) Still in:#8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker, #28 Randy Savage With the final three competitors determined, there really wasn't a clear-cut favorite since you could easily make a good case for all three. Savage is a former WWF Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion. Steamboat is a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, WWF Intercontinental Champion, and widely considered one of the best wrestlers in the world. Then there's the Undertaker, and well, just look at him! You can never count out a man of that stature and strength. In a move that shocked everyone in the Hoosier Dome, Savage and Steamboat decided to team up and try to throw out the Undertaker. It was a short-lived partnership though, as The Ultimate Warrior's music suddenly hits and he charges towards the ring. Savage nearly jumps out of his trunks, quickly sliding out of the ring. Warrior chases him around the ringside area, and after a few laps, Savage quickly slides back into the ring with plans on sliding back out the other side. What Savage didn't count on though, was Ricky Steamboat using his momentum towards the other ropes to easily toss him over the top for the next to last elimination. Eliminated: Randy Savage(by Steamboat) Still in: #8 Ricky Steamboat, #19 The Undertaker Savage hurries back to his feet, and barely escapes the grasp of the Warrior, who chases him back to the locker rooms. All the commotion, and Steamboat's own excitement for eliminating his long-time rival Savage, keeps his attention for just long enough to be caught off-guard by The Undertaker. The deadman catches Steamboat with a big uppercut and follows it up with a Tombstone Piledriver, before tossing Steamboat's nearly lifeless body over the top rope and to the floor to win the Royal Rumble! Howard Finkel: Here is your winner of the Royal Rumble, THEEEE UNDERTAKERRRR!!! The Undertaker shows nearly no emotion as the Royal Rumble winner, choosing to let Brother Love do his celebrating for him. Top 5 in-ring performances of the night: Ted DiBiase - 92 Sgt. Slaughter - 85 Dusty Rhodes- 80 The Ultimate Warrior - 78 The Big Boss Man(vs. Barbarian) - 78 The Next Day: - The British Bulldog was identified as a hard drug user by the WWF Drug Testing Policy. I fined him and he was devastated. Owen and Bret Hart were pleased though, as was The Mountie, but only because he hates Bulldog. - Bobby Heenan tested positive for soft drugs and was also fined, but nothing came of it. - Finally, Animal was identified as a Steroid user by the WWF Drug Testing Policy, but nothing of interest came out of fining him either. - Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes are gone from the WWF as their loan periods ended. - Tito Santana and Greg Valentine both need a rest after a grueling recent schedule. Santana pulled double duty on the night, so this was to be expected. - The Ultimate Warrior, as usual, thinks someone is a waste of time. In this instance, it's Dave Taylor. - Randy Savage thinks Owen Hart is turning into a good worker and is worth getting behind! - Randy Savage had significant morale issues over the Royal Rumble booking and I had to give him a $100,000 bonus to get him from "Angry" back to "Normal." Although I really like DiBiase, I probably would've gone with Dusty and Dustin if they weren't already signed to WCW when the mod starts. Like Rick The Model Martel and Repo Man lol In my opinion, one of the most underrated workers in history! The Model gimmick notwithstanding. Okerlund runs down the hallway and interviews the Warrior, who cuts an incoherent promo about umbrellas? and ghosts? and says Savage will pay the "Ultimate Price!" <hr> The British Bulldog beats a game, fellow European Dave Finlay by pinfall with a Running Powerslam in 6:08. <hr> After Hulk Hogan was assaulted by Nikita Koloff just minutes before the Royal Rumble match was supposed to start last night, he was ruled ineligible for the match due to potential internal bleeding. "Mean" Gene Okerlund interviews a doctor backstage who says Hogan doesn't have internal bleeding and has been cleared to wrestle effective immediately! <hr> The Lumberjack teamed with John Nord in a victory over Boris Zhukov and Brooklyn Brawler. The finish saw The Lumberjack pin Brooklyn Brawler after a German Suplex at 7:03. <hr> Brother Love talks up The Undertaker as the winner of the Royal Rumble and says the deadman now has his sights set on all the top superstars in the World Wrestling Federation, including WWF Champion, The Ultimate Warrior! Brother Love then announces that he's, unfortunately, a little too busy "spreading his message of love" to give The Undertaker the attention he needs to take his career to these new heights. So, he's sold his contract to a man who can give him that attention, Paul Bearer! <hr> Rick Martel carelessly drug a burlap sack containing Damien to the ring, where he defeated Scott Taylor by submission with a Boston Crab. <hr> After Martel defeated Taylor, Jake "The Snake" rushed the ring to attack Martel in an attempt to take Damien back. Martel quickly escaped though, pulling a hammer from underneath the ring and threatening to smash the bag containing Damien with it. Jake backed off. <hr> w/ Demolition defeated The Bushwhackers in 10:10 when Crush submitted Luke with a Head Crusher after a distraction from Mr. Fuji. <hr> Ted DiBiase says he knew Virgil would try to screw him, so he hired a real bodyguard in Sid, who will prove his worth right now! <hr> Sid decimated B. Martel wasn't blinded, but his vision will be temporarily impaired and he is not currently cleared to compete. <hr> w/ In a short match, The Mountie defeated Scott Taylor in 4:53 by submission with a Quebec Crab. <hr> The Big Boss Man tries to attack Bobby Heenan at the announce table after Heenan insulted his mother again last week and was doing the same here, but it's a trap and the entire Heenan family attacks. Mr. Perfect handcuffs him to the steel barricade along the aisle and beats him in the ribs with his own nightstick while Haku and The Barbarian keep WWF officials at bay. <hr> Paul Bearer issues an open challenge to face "his" Undertaker at Saturday Night's Main Event. <hr> w/ The Legion of Doom defeated The Warlord and Kato in 9:29 when Hawk defeated Kato by pinfall following a Doomsday Device. <hr> After their victory, Hawk and Animal take to the mic and accept the open challenge of the Hart Foundation for Wrestlemania 7. They claim to have no personal issues with the Harts and suggest it's solely about the WWF Tag Team Championship belts. <hr> "Macho King" Randy Savage and Sensational Queen Sherri are interviewed from an undisclosed location by Gorilla Monsoon. Savage insists he's not scared of the Ultimate Warrior, and his focus is just on regaining the WWF championship, saying he'll strike when the time is right. He's informed though, that Jack Tunney has granted a request by the Ultimate Warrior to face Savage at Wrestlemania 7. Savage is ecstatic until Monsoon tells him it will only be a WWF Championship match if the Warrior wants it to be! Bulldog obliges, going nose to nose with The Undertaker. Bearer ends the segment by suggesting Bulldog head down to ringside to get an up-close look at what he'll face this Saturday! <hr> w/ The Undertaker plants The Rebel with a Tombstone Piledriver at 4:19. <hr> "Mean" Gene interviews the Hart Foundation, who say they're happy that it was the Legion of Doom who accepted the open challenge they issued for Wrestlemania 7. More than that though, they were happy to hear the Legion of Doom say it was nothing personal and that they just want the titles. Bret said that's good for the Hart Foundation because it's not personal for them either; it's all about the competition. In fact, they'll prove just how much they love competition by making their main event match with the Nasty Boys tonight a Tag Team title match! It's also announced during this segment that the two teams will face off before Wrestlemania at Saturday Night's Main Event when Bret takes on Hawk and Neidhart takes on Animal in singles action. <hr> The Heenan family brags about getting rid of The Big Boss Man on last week's Prime Time, but they're shocked to learn from "Mean" Gene that The Big Boss Man will still be taking his title shot against Mr. Perfect at Saturday Night's Main Event, broken ribs and all! <hr> The Ultimate Warrior steamrolls Kato with a Running Splash in 5:15. <hr> The Ultimate Warrior is interviewed ringside by "Mean" Gene. He tells Randy Savage, in Warrior's special, roundabout way, that he'll gladly put the WWF Heavyweight Championship on the line against Savage in their match at Wrestlemania 7. But he'll only put it on the line if Savage puts his career on the line! <hr> WWF World Tag Team Championship The Nasty Boys vs. The Hart Foundation © w/ Bret begins the match with Knobbs and tries to take things to the mat. Since Knobbs would obviously have no chance in a technical battle with Hart, he tries to turn it into a brawl instead. He apparently hadn't done his homework though, because Hart's also a great brawler and actually won that battle too, forcing Knobbs to tag in Sags. Sags went right back to the brawling well, seemingly learning nothing from Knobbs' attempts, and Bret keeps the advantage a little longer before tagging in "The Anvil." Neidhart didn't fair nearly as well though, and the Nasty Boys took control for a good bit at this point, successfully cutting the ring in half to prevent a Neidhart tag. When Neidhart is inevitably able to tag Bret back in, "The Hitman" quickly seizes control for his team. From there, it wasn't long before Sags was screaming in agony, just another victim of the Sharpshooter at 12:25. The Hart Foundation makes defense number 31 of their WWF World Tag Team titles. <hr> Show Rating: <hr> Post-show notes: - Boris Zhukov suffered Hip Tendinitis in a pre-show match. - Bret Hart debuted a new comeback spot in the main event that got the crowd buzzing. His psychology will be helped by being able to use it as a go-to spot in the future. He didn't really serve much of a purpose as my roster is currently constructed anyway, as he was just a bit of a "name" jobber. It cost me a little over 18 grand to cut him from his written contract. - Pat Patterson said "The Rebel" Tracy Smothers is turning into a good worker and is worth getting behind. - Hulk Hogan said the newly hired Bill Irwin needs to learn how to sell. Pot meet kettle? I guess it's a matter of personal opinion on Hogan's selling style. - Shawn Michaels chimed in with his first opinion of the save and I'm surprised it took this long. He probably could've picked a better target than Hogan's best friend though, saying Brian Knobbs needed to learn how to sell and wasn't worth pushing until he did. Backstage before the show: - Jimmy Snuka failed to show up for a scheduled meeting with a Road Agent. I gave him a "slap on the wrist" and his behavior got worse. - Hulk Hogan was brought before the Wrestler's Court!!!, accused of annoying everyone else with his constant boasting and cocky attitude. The judge, Randy Savage, sentenced him to remain silent for the rest of the night, then to buy drinks for everyone after the show. This supposedly improved Hogan's behavior! - Jim Duggan has taken Mike Barton(Bart Gunn) under his wing as a protege. Rating: 95 The Warlord defeated Hector Guerrero in 4:40 by pinfall with a chokeslam. Rating: 65 Angle: Unsurprisingly, considering his recent beef with the Natural Disasters, Jim Duggan is announced as Dino Bravo's partner for his tag match against the Hart Family giants at Saturday Night's Main Event. Rating: 88 Bill Irwin defeated Duane Gill with a Superplex in 5:30. Rating: 58 The State Patrol, Corporal Parker and Lieutenant Wright, make their WWF debut by beating Al Snow and Scott Taylor in 4:53 when Cpl. Parker pinned Taylor with a Piledriver. Rating: 51 Angle: Before his debut match, the newest member of the WWF roster, Buddy Landel, cuts a promo saying, "The 'Nature Boy' has finally arrived in the World Wrestling Federation, and just like everywhere else I've ever been, I'm going straight to the top! WOOOHOOO!!!" Rating: 61 "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel used the lopes for leverage to defeat Koko B. Ware by submission with a Figure Four in 7:01. Rating: 60 Kamala blatantly hits Ricky Steamboat with his African mask in front of the referee, giving "The Dragon" a DQ victory at 10:22. He loves to fight! I fined Irwin which led to a "Simmering Tension" relationship with me. Finlay was pleased with my decision though.
