Pre-Show:

In a pre-show bout that had terrible wrestling and non-existent crowd heat, Bull Nakano won a Free Agent Battle Royal in 10:28. The other members of the 'final four' were Booker Huffman (T), Diamond Dallas Page, and Charles Wright, with Booker Huffman being the final elimination after Diamond Dallas Page pulled him over the top rope when Booker foolishly accepted his handshake offer. Tony Norris got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Monsoon: WELCOME, to the historic Madison Square Garden in New York City! WELCOME, to Summerslam 1991! Hello, everyone, I'm Gorilla Monsoon, and filling in for Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, who's busy preparing for what could be his final night as a manager, is Vince McMahon!

McMahon: Thanks, pal, it's great to be here with you!

Monsoon: What a show we have tonight, Vince! One of the best cards I've seen in a looong time!

McMahon: Definitely, Gorilla. We've got WWF Champion, "Macho King" Randy Savage, putting his title on the line against King of the Ring winner, Bret "Hitman" Hart. The Intercontinental Title is also on the line, when "The Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff, defends against former champion, The Big Boss Man, in a match where falls will count anywhere!

Monsoon: And don't forget the big WWF World Tag Team Championship match, as "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and big, Sid, defend against The Legion of Doom!

McMahon: I haven't, Gorilla. But perhaps the match I'm most intrigued by is Hulk Hogan finally getting the opportunity to get his hands on that despicable Dragon!

Monsoon: I never thought I'd have to cheer against Ricky Steamboat, Vince, but the times, as they say, are a-changin'!

McMahon: Indeed they are, pal!

Monsoon: Let's head down to the ring and "The Fink" for our opening contest!

Miracle Violence Connection vs. Haku & Barbarian w/ Bobby Heenan

uFxHYpW.jpgBKOdg8K.jpgxblkqeI.pngnOiJizq.jpglzVtBMt.jpgw/WikFKEQ.jpg

In their WWF PPV debut, The Miracle Violence Connection were up against arguably the hardest-hitting team the WWF has to offer, Haku and The Barbarian. Williams and Gordy are of course not lightweights themselves, and thus an entertaining "battle of the brutes" was the result. This was as simple as a wrestling match gets. Just four big, tough guys, going toe to toe, with no fancy holds or reversals. In the end, it was The Miracle Violence Connection picking up the victory at 11:48, when Williams pinned Haku after a Doctor Bomb. Solid opener with a good reaction from the crowd, who were really letting Bobby Heenan have it, since they may not really get another chance after tonight.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. The Ultimate Warrior

0YsDiyO.jpgw/cUdFYH7.jpgxblkqeI.pngLrRaKZ7.jpg

With Paul Bearer's attempts to have The Ultimate Warrior brainwashed by Kevin Sullivan into being the first member of Undertaker's "Army of Darkness" having failed colossally, the time had come to settle their dispute the old fashioned way, one on one. This face-off had been brewing ever since The Undertaker cost The Ultimate Warrior his WWF Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania five months ago. The last time these two tangled, just six days ago, it was all Ultimate Warrior. This match started the same way, with a determined Warrior going right at the deadman and putting him on the mat with an ease not yet seen in Undertaker's short time in the World Wrestling Federation. The Undertaker didn't stay down much though, always sitting right back up like a zombie back from the dead not long after hitting the mat. The Warrior seemed to be mesmerized by this, surely having never experienced anything like it, as accustomed as he was to simply steamrolling jobbers for most of his career. We'll never know whether Warrior could have eventually kept him down long enough to win the match though, since...

O5CcA1R.jpg

Kevin Sullivan made his presence felt for the first time in over a month. With Undertaker hoisted high above his head for a Gorilla Press Slam, the Warrior was distracted by Sullivan yelling in tongues over a mic. Warrior dropped Undertaker, although that's what he was gonna do anyway, and turned his attention to Sullivan, cocking his head like a curious dog. With Warrior distracted, Undertaker did what he'd been doing the entire match, he sat up. Warrior of course didn't notice this and paid the price, eating a Tombstone Piledriver to take the loss by pinfall at 9:42.

CEKZoc0.jpg

<hr>

With the battle won, The Undertaker was prepared to finish the war. While Sullivan was distracting Warrior before the match ended, Paul Bearer had made his way to the back. Now that the match was over he reemerged, rolling a casket down to the ring. Bearer would then place the casket against the side of the ring as Undertaker hit a second Tombstone on Warrior before rolling him under the bottom rope and into the casket. Sullivan and Bearer slammed the lid shut, and were in the process of locking it when...

U8K34ai.jpgIpE2vTY.jpgRrhIPtQ.jpgHfr9JPp.jpgD6jDtTj.jpg

Crush, The British Bulldog, Dino Bravo, and The New Foundation rushed down to the ring to make the save, with Crush, Bulldog, and Bravo brawling with The Undertaker, and The New Foundation scaring off Bearer and Sullivan to release the Warrior from the casket.

Al Snow & The New Foundation vs. Hercules, The Warlord & Kamala w/ Slick

xblkqeI.png

wi8hbjF.jpg6E5Y29K.jpgXgexnBz.jpgw/upijNYz.jpg

This was a decent match, with some fairly fast-paced action considering who the participants were on one side. Al Snow got his wish, I guess, early in the match with some ring time opposite Hercules. That certainly didn't end well for the youngster, as Hercules completely dominated their interaction before getting bored and tagging out. In the end, though, it was the smaller team picking up the victory, when Owen Hart pinned Warlord yet again following a Missile Dropkick at 10:05. Also of note, was the fact that Kamala was basically a non-factor in this one, as Slick just really couldn't seem to keep him focused in this more chaotic environment. It may be time for Slick to rethink Kamala as a client.

Falls Count Anywhere Match

"The Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff © vs. The Big Boss Man

3tOYMIU.jpgxblkqeI.png0DVmuB8.jpg

The constant arena-wide brawls, subsequent arrests, and just general violent nature of this feud seemed to lend itself perfectly to a Falls Count Anywhere match stipulation. Ironically enough though, this match was contested almost entirely inside the ring. Despite that, there was still plenty of violence to be had in the ring, with both men using a heavy dose of their preferred weapon, Koloff's chain and Boss Man's nightstick, to inflict heavy damage on their opponent. Then there was the blood. Good grief the blood! Late in the match, with Boss Man down, Nikita proceeded to remove all twelve! turnbuckle pads to inflict more damage instead of just trying to retain his title. This would backfire though, as Nikita ended up being the one who took the damage from the exposed steel, when Boss Man drove his head into all twelve exposed buckles, busting him wide open. Koloff's head was basically a gushing fountain at that point, and that appeared to be all she wrote. However...

<details> <summary>SPOILER</summary>

je6k2vL.jpg

a mountain of a man would interfere on Koloff's behalf, nearly driving Boss Man through the canvas with a ring-shaking Running Powerslam, the impact of which knocked Boss Man to the outside. The man then helped Koloff, who was still bleeding profusely, out of the ring and draped him over Boss Man as Referee Earl Hebner reluctantly counted the three. Nikita Koloff makes defense number 1 of his WWF Intercontinental title at 16:25.

WA0kRGE.jpg

<hr>

As soon as the bell rang, Hebner was calling for medical staff to tend to Koloff. Koloff's friend wasn't interested though, shoving Hebner to the floor and picking Koloff up and draping him over his shoulder. As Koloff's friend made his way towards the back, medical personnel pleaded with him, to no avail, to let them tend to Koloff.

Crush vs. Smash w/ Mr. Fuji

U8K34ai.jpgxblkqeI.png4gr1auE.jpgw/b3qUQxt.jpg

Not much to say about this one, as it was an uneventful, and fairly one-sided affair, with Crush in the driver's seat from the word go. After Mr. Fuji was ejected from the ringside area by Referee Shane Stevens, The Hawaiian picked up the win by pinfall over his former partner Smash, with his new Tour of the Islands finisher, at 8:44.

RfUs5rn.jpg

Although the match itself was uneventful, the post-match wasn't. As Crush was leaving the arena, high-fiving fans on his way out, Kevin Sullivan made his way down to the ring.

O5CcA1R.jpg

He went up to a still downed Smash and began whispering in his ear. After a short time, Smash would sit up in a trance-like state and follow Sullivan out through the crowd.

Lumberjack Match

Mr. Perfect vs. Terry Funk w/ Bobby Heenan

QvZ2FVS.jpgxblkqeI.png3qzcoj1.jpgw/WikFKEQ.jpg

It all came down to this for Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. A Funk victory and Heenan proves to Mr. Perfect that, at least in his mind, he was the reason for Perfect's success. A Mr. Perfect victory and Heenan will get what many have felt he's deserved for the longest time, a severe beating at the hands of someone he's wronged. To top it all off, he would also lose his manager's license and be banned from managing in the WWF for life! And there would be no "family" to help either since the ring was surrounded by lumberjacks. Not just any lumberjacks though, but Commissioner Graham's handpicked lumberjacks. The British Bulldog, Crush, The New Foundation, The Rock 'n' Roll Express, Jim Duggan, Bob Backlund, Virgil, The Conquistadors, Tito Santana, Dino Bravo, Kevin Von Erich, Chris Adams, Koko B. Ware, Nikolai Volkoff, The Bushwhackers and, of course, The Lumberjack, were all present to ensure this match had a straight-up winner. With all the lumberjacks surrounding the ring, Heenan was given just a small corner next to the ring steps to "manage" from, which he complained about incessantly before the match started.

This was yet another outstanding match between these two, just as good or better than their match last month at Roadblock. Without the threat of a potential "family" attack looming though, Perfect looked much more at ease here and the match had a better flow as a result. With a chance to finally get his hands on Heenan if he won, Perfect was going for a pin after pretty much every move in the early going, but with not so much as a two-count to show for it. Funk, of course, did what he always does and cheated at every opportunity, which ended up costing him, and Heenan by proxy, very dearly in the end. With the match basically at a stalemate in the late going, Funk went into his tights for a pair of brass knucks, the Heenan family weapon of choice so far in 1991. And while he did manage to get them out and on his hand without Referee Danny Davis noticing, he hit a little snafu. With knucks on hand and his back turned to Perfect, he readied his strike. When Perfect grabbed him to turn him around, Funk took a wild swing with the knucks. Perfect knew this was coming though since some of the lumberjacks were yelling to him from ringside, so he quickly ducked, causing Funk to knock out Davis instead. Funk still ended up clocking Perfect too though and probably would have won the match if Davis hadn't been knocked out. Davis was out though, so while he waited, Funk went for a Piledriver for good measure, figuring the added time would help Davis recover. That was probably true, but one of the lumberjacks rendered it a moot point.

cNbKDQE.jpg

It was one of the Conquistadors, who hurried into the ring and pulled Funk away from Perfect. Funk took him down with ease though, as he and Heenan shared a laugh. Heenan's laugh came to an abrupt end though, and he began yelling at Funk to turn around. Funk eventually noticed Heenan's pleas and slowly turned to come face to face with the other Conquistador.

xzobhXs.jpg

Confused, Funk hesitated before taking a wild swing at the second masked man. The Conquistador blocked it though, and drilled Funk with a Discus Punch! The fans erupted, realizing right then and there who the second Conquistador actually was.

<details> <summary>SPOILER</summary>

IYQfaUB.jpg

The Texas Tornado! Tornado obviously hadn't forgotten what Funk did to him earlier in the year, putting him on the shelf for five months at Wrestlemania in March, so he took the opportunity to exact a little revenge. He didn't have time to celebrate though, as Referee Danny Davis was coming around, so he gave Perfect a little shake and high-tailed it out of New York. Back on his feet now, Perfect connected with a Perfect Plex for a slow three count from Davis, as lumberjacks at ringside held Heenan back from entering the ring to break up the pin. Perfect wins an outstanding match at 20:17.

LZNzzLY.jpg

<hr>

With Perfect's five minutes alone with Heenan secured, no one was surprised when "The Brain" tried to make a run for it. He didn't get far though, as the lumberjacks swarmed him and carried him back to the ring over their heads and tossed him through the ropes to a waiting Perfect. Surrounding the ring once more, the lumberjacks looked on as Mr. Perfect made good on his word, delivering a beating to Heenan the likes of which he's never had, but has long needed!

Monsoon: Vince, is it bad that I kinda feel sorry for the little guy?

McMahon: YES!

Monsoon: You're probably right!

Monsoon: Ladies and gentlemen, just moments ago, "Mean" Gene Okerlund was supposed to conduct an interview with the Hulkster before his match later tonight with Ri....The Dragon. However, when Gene knocked on Hulk's dressing room door and announced himself there was no answer. Finding this very strange, since the Hulkster never refuses an interview, Gene called in security. Upon entering the room, security found Hulk Hogan severely beaten on the floor with his leg inside a folded steel chair. He was taken to a nearby medical facility, and it is unknown whether he'll be able to face The Dragon later tonight.

McMahon: The Dragon is a gutless coward, Gorilla! He knew Hulk would take him out, so he took the easy way out yet again!

Monsoon: It sure looks that way, Vince. Updates as soon as we get them, folks. But for now, let's go down to the Fink for our WWF World Tag Team Championship match!

Many would have argued that the Legion of Doom were the favorites to take the Tag Team titles after they were vacated following Wrestlemania 7. Hawk had to take some time off(go to rehab) after Wrestlemania though, and they lost their spot. With Hawk back in action, it was obvious that the champs, well DiBiase at least, were worried. After all, he did try to fake an injury to get out of this match. Turns out his worries were justified too because even though he was right that neither member of LOD was much of a match for Sid individually, he was wrong in thinking Sid could beat them single-handedly. DiBiase pretty much let Sid wrestle this one by himself, and while Sid did manage to hold his own for most of the match, he was eventually left with no choice but to tag in a reluctant DiBiase. This was the champs' downfall. After being manhandled by both Hawk and Animal for what must have seemed like an eternity, DiBiase managed to take control temporarily, hitting Animal with a low blow without Referee Shane Stevens seeing it. This brought a furious Hawk into the ring to argue with the apparently blind Stevens. With Stevens distracted by Hawk, DiBiase called for I.R.S. to hit Animal with his briefcase, the same weapon that had won DiBiase and Sid the titles in the first place. DiBiase held Animal up for Schyster, but Animal ducked the attack, causing DiBiase to be struck down instead. Seeing this, Hawk shoved Stevens aside and quickly ran across the ring, knocking Sid off the apron and into the steel barricade at ringside. I.R.S tried to interfere, but Hawk knocked him off the apron as well, allowing Animal to cover DiBiase to win the titles at 15:43.

Jake Roberts vs. Vader

6uWqSI4.jpgxblkqeI.pnguiRsVG0.jpg

After Roberts finally got a real piece of Vader on Prime Time earlier this month, relentlessly beating him with Jim Duggan's 2x4, Roberts said it was basically just the beginning. In fact, both men had promised the other that there would be major hell to pay here at Summerslam. Both men were true to their word in that regard, as this was a real slobberknocker! Roberts was out first to a tremendous ovation from the Madison Square Garden crowd. The same couldn't be said for Vader, who was booed relentlessly before the boos turned to cheers when Roberts met him halfway down the aisle and attacked. By the time they ended up in the ring and Referee Jim Korderas called for the bell, both men were worse for wear than many of the night's participants were after their matches had ended.

Worse for wear or not though, Vader is a beast of a man and he took control very quickly, repeatedly squashing or slamming Roberts into the mat or turnbuckles. Vader could have seemingly ended the match any time he wanted, but he chose to just keep up the onslaught instead. You should never give a man like Roberts any leeway though or he'll slither his way right back into the match, and he eventually did. Late in the match, Vader connected with a Chokeslam and drug Roberts into the corner and set up for a Vader Bomb. Before climbing up the turnbuckles though, Vader took the time to taunt Roberts and slap him over and over in the face. He took even more time climbing to the middle turnbuckle, taunting the crowd and yelling back down at Roberts some more. This extra wasted time bit Vader in the ass as Roberts wisely rolled towards the turnbuckles to avoid the Vader Bomb, and the ring shook violently as Vader slammed stomach first into the mat. Roberts went on the attack at this point, slapping Vader repeatedly in the back of the head to return the favor, dropping him again with a Swinging Knee Lift, and somehow managing to get him up for a Gutbuster. A Short-Arm Clothesline would follow and Roberts called for the DDT to a massive pop from the crowd. He hooked Vader's head, made the "wrap it up" gesture with his finger, and.....flew over the top rope to the arena floor, as Vader lifted him by the legs and tossed him there to prevent the move. Vader made his way out and continued his onslaught, which he finished by crushing Roberts against the steel ring post, before rolling back in just before Referee Jim Korderas' count reached 10. Vader wins a very physical contest by countout at 19:43.

As soon as the bell rings, Vader rolls right back outside as Rick Rude joins him in attacking Roberts yet again. Rude holds Roberts up from behind while Vader delivers hard, alternating, rights and lefts to the abdomen of Roberts, before dropping him to his knees in pain with a stiff knee as a bonus. From there, Vader instructed Rude to take the ring steps apart, finishing the post-match assault with a Powerbomb on the bottom half of the steel steps! Medical personnel quickly rushed down to check on Roberts, as Vader and Rude celebrated their victory.

Hulk Hogan w/ "Rowdy" Roddy Piper vs. The Dragon

rn73XZ4.jpgw/6c5ITBO.jpgxblkqeI.pngm42sSZt.jpg

The time had come for Hulk Hogan vs. The Dragon, and there had still been no updates on Hogan's condition. Hogan was due out first too, so when his music hit and he didn't show, the fans became restless and started booing. The loud booing continued when The Dragon's music hit and he made his way to the ring, surprisingly accompanied by Bam Bam Bigelow.

The Dragon grabbed a mic and said it's only fair, and smart, that he have someone to watch his back like Hogan does with Piper. Speaking of, the Scotsman's music hit and he hobbled to the ring, still on two crutches, to a pretty good pop. He asked Howard Finkel for a mic and announced that he just got off the phone with Hogan a little bit ago, and Hogan told him he probably wasn't going to make it back in time for the match. Piper was about to continue when The Dragon cut him off. The Dragon says he always knew Piper was stupid, but this was an all-new level of dumb. Bigelow, who had circled behind Piper by this point, attacked. The beatdown was on, as both Bigelow and the Dragon tore into Piper, with each man using one of Piper's own crutches as a weapon against him. It was a short-lived beating though, as Hogan did indeed make it back in time, limping, but limping briskly, toward the ring as the sold-out crowd went wild! It was like Willis Reed all over again! Bad leg and all, Hogan quickly cleaned house and drove The Dragon and Bigelow from the ring as the crowd continued to roar.

The situation eventually calmed down, but unfortunately for Hogan, Piper wouldn't be able to stay at ringside after all and he was helped to the back. The Dragon was loving every minute of this until Commissioner Graham made an appearance.

Graham: I'm glad you think fairness is important, Dragon. Because I THINK it's only fair, that if Hogan can't have Piper at ringside, then you can't have Bigelow! Mr. Bigelow, GET OUT AND STAY OUT!

With the pre-match "festivities" now finished, it was time for action. Even with his once again injured leg slowing him down, Hogan had little trouble over-powering The Dragon for most of this match. To his credit though, The Dragon displayed a resilience rarely seen from a man at such a size disadvantage, never staying down for long no matter what punishment Hogan had inflicted. About halfway through the match, The Dragon finally got the opportunity to execute his game plan. When Hogan whipped The Dragon into the ropes, The Dragon did a baseball slide under the bottom rope to the outside. When Hogan approached, The Dragon grabbed his leg to pull him down to the mat, and hammered his injured leg across the edge of the apron. With Hogan now writhing in agony, The Dragon drug him to the corner and slammed his leg forcefully into the steel ring post with a sickening thud. Back in the ring now, The Dragon would continue working on Hogan's leg before finally applying a Figure Four Leglock. Every time Referee Shane Stevens would ask Hogan if he wanted to quit, The Dragon would take the opportunity to grab the ring ropes for added leverage. This must've gone on for three solid minutes, and how Hogan managed to hang on that long without submitting is a mystery.

Fortunately for Hogan, Stevens eventually caught The Dragon using the ropes for leverage and threatened to disqualify him if he didn't break the hold. Frustrated, The Dragon went to the outside and brought a steel chair into the ring. When the obvious thing happened and Stevens took the chair away, The Dragon used the time Stevens had his back turned to pull some unidentified foreign object out of his tights, nail Hogan in the head with it, and stuff it back in his tights. The Dragon covered Hogan, but by the time Stevens returned, Hogan managed to kick out. This was no normal kick out though, it was a "Hulk Up" style kick out, as Hogan kicked out with such authority that The Dragon landed on his feet a couple of feet away. And you know what that means. Hogan began to violently shake his head side to side, pointing a finger at The Dragon. The Dragon approached and connected with a loud chop to the chest, which Hogan just shook off. He did the same on a second chop, a third chop, and finally a hard, right hand, before standing up and starting to stomp around the ring. He continued to shake his head and pump his fists, as The Dragon attacked once more. Hogan blocked the punch though and connected with one of his own, then a second and third, before sending The Dragon off the ropes and dropping him with a Big Boot. Hogan then cupped his ear toward the crowd, who responded with a huge cheer, before "rumping", that's running while limping, towards the ropes. As he approached The Dragon on the rebound though, his injured leg gave out, and he crumpled to the mat.

With Hogan's "Hulk Up" sequence failing, The Dragon would soon recover and lock Hogan into the Figure Four once more. Hogan still managed to hold out though, refusing to quit. As Stevens continued to ask Hogan if he wanted to submit, seemingly shocked that he didn't, The Dragon went back into his tights and pulled out the foreign object once more. Suddenly, Bam Bam Bigelow came running towards the ring, ignoring Commissioner Graham's warning to stay out, and began yelling at Stevens. Now, one of the senior officials might have ignored Bigelow, knowing that he was obviously up to no good, but Stevens is inexperienced and fell for the distraction. Stevens couldn't possibly have had his back turned for more than two seconds, when The Dragon nailed Hogan in the face with the foreign object, knocking the Hulkster out cold. The Dragon then tossed the object outside, and seeing this, Bigelow quickly gave up his argument with Stevens and made his way out of the arena. Stevens returned his attention to Hogan and The Dragon, and when he got no response when questioning the now unconscious Hogan again, he called for the bell. The Dragon wins by "submission" at 20:26.

As the fans threw trash at a celebrating Dragon, he went back outside the ring and brought in a steel chair yet again. Stevens tried to stop him, but The Dragon threatened him with the chair and scared him off. The Dragon then closed Hogan's leg up in the steel chair and climbed up to the middle turnbuckle. He started to jump multiple times but kept hesitating. Finally, The Dragon hopped down off the middle rope and asked for a mic.

Dragon: You know what, Hogan? I'm a reasonable guy. I think you've had enough!!

The Dragon drops the mic and exits the ring, as the medical staff makes yet another trip to the ring, their third of the night.

Shawn Michaels & Brian Pillman vs. Marty Jannetty & Tom Zenk

A5GI5Ju.pngygf9Rna.jpgxblkqeI.png0yWB3YV.jpgwlVAmeH.jpg

Our fourth and final tag team match of the night was our penultimate bout, as Marty Jannetty finally got his chance to get his hands on former partner Shawn Michaels in an actual match. It would have to wait a while though, since Pillman started the match with his former partner Tom Zenk. There wasn't much bad blood there though, so we just got some standard back and forth action to start. Pillman eventually took a firm advantage though, and he and Michaels began working the leg of Zenk. By the midway point of the match, Zenk could hardly stand and it was looking less and less likely that he'd be able to hold out for long enough to give Jannetty a shot at Michaels. As the match length closed in on double digits though, Zenk finally made his move. As Zenk was pulling himself up by the ropes, trying to stand, Micheals came over and grabbed him by his injured leg, pulling him towards the center of the ring. As Zenk tried to balance himself, hopping on his one good foot, Michaels began taunting him. After slapping Zenk in the face, Michaels turned to Pillman to laugh, but when he turned back Zenk pushed off his good foot and connected with an Enziguri to the back of Michaels' head. With Michaels down now, Zenk drug himself to his corner and tagged in Jannetty, who got to Michaels just before he could tag Pillman back in. That's when months of pent-up frustration exploded to the surface, and Jannetty unleashed hell on Michaels. By the time Jannetty was pulled away by Referee Danny Davis a few minutes later, Michaels was a bloody mess, but his team had picked up the win by disqualification at 11:40.

"Macho King" Randy Savage w/ The Kingdom © vs. Bret "Hitman" Hart w/ The New Foundation

The fans had been treated to a highly entertaining show up to this point, with some truly outstanding moments and matches. None of those moments or matches could hold a candle to this one though. If you could only use one word to describe this match, it would have to be "unbelievable!"

Bret Hart set out on a journey the night of Wrestlemania 7, to live out his dream of becoming the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion. At the time, not a single soul doubted his ability to eventually reach that goal. Surely though, no one would have expected he'd get this far so quickly. Just five short months later and his first shot at singles gold was indeed for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. And even though his family was at his side, it was going to be an uphill climb to knock Savage off his throne, especially with Rick Rude, Vader, and Sherri in his corner. Vader and Rude would make their presence felt very early in this one too, but not by attacking Bret Hart. Instead, they mauled both Owen and Neidhart at ringside almost the instant Savage and Bret locked up, and by the time they were through, Owen Hart had to be taken out on a stretcher and Neidhart had to be helped to the back by a gaggle of WWF officials. So much for Bret Hart having someone to watch his back!

Now, Bret Hart gets tons of credit, and deservedly so, for his technical wrestling ability. "Macho King" Randy Savage gets tons of credit, deservedly so, for his unpredictable, but effective, brawling style. What neither gets nearly enough credit for though, are their all-around abilities. So no one should have been surprised when Bret Hart tried to take the match to the mats in the early going, and Savage happily obliged as they chain-wrestled to a stalemate. No one should have been shocked when Savage turned the match in the direction of a straight-up brawl at the mid-point, and Hart happily obliged, fighting Savage to yet another stalemate. But with Rude and Vader now realizing just how much of a threat Hart was, they just had to stick their noses in. After connecting with an Inverted Atomic Drop and a Clothesline, Hart backed into the corner and climbed onto Bret's ro... uh, the middle turnbuckle. As he was measuring Savage up for his patented Axe Handle Elbow Drop, Sherri climbed onto the apron to distract Referee Earl Hebner. This allowed Rick Rude to knock Hart off the ropes, and the Hitman tumbled onto the apron and out to the floor. As Rude joined in on distracting Hebner, Vader went on the attack and floored a recovering Hart with a vicious clothesline. With Hart back down, Vader flattened him with a huge splash, rolling his limp body back into the ring once he was finished. Hebner of course turned his attention back just in time to see nothing, well nothing except a formerly downed Savage now in control and climbing to the top rope. Savage flew into the air and connected with his Flying Elbow Drop to retai...nope, Bret Hart kicked out!

Savage was absolutely stunned! And why wouldn't he be? Hart had just been knocked off the middle rope to the arena floor, mauled by Vader and hit with a huge splash at ringside, and been nailed by Savage's finisher, and it still wasn't enough. Savage got into a heated argument with Hebner at this point, accusing the referee of a "very" slow count and shoving him hard into the turnbuckle. It was almost like Savage wanted to be disqualified, but Hebner wouldn't concede, simply shoving back at Savage in return. Savage would then make his way back to the top for a second Flying Elbow Drop, but Hart rolled out of the way this time and Savage crashed spectacularly to the canvas. Hart quickly got back to his feet and began working on Savage's left leg. After a few minutes of this and satisfied with the damage he'd done, Hart went for the Sharpshooter. Savage blocked though and managed to pull Hart into a small package for a near fall. Undeterred, Hart quickly went for the Sharpshooter again and was able to lock it in on the second try. He didn't quite have it cinched though and Savage quickly pulled himself to the bottom rope, just barely getting a finger locked around it. Hebner informed Hart that Savage was in the ropes, but Hart refused to release the hold initially, keeping it on for at least 10 more seconds before breaking. Hebner began to yell at Hart, threatening to disqualify him. Unfortunately for Hart, he'd already "dug his own grave." While Hebner was scolding Hart, Sherri had tossed Savage his scepter. Luckily for Hart, Hebner quickly noticed this and wrestled it away from Savage. Unluckily for Hart, Hebner didn't see Rick Rude slide into the ring, attack Hart from behind, and hit him with a Rude Awakening. With the damage done, Savage climbed to the top and connected with a second Flying Elbow Drop. Checkmate! Savage makes defense number 3 of his WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 21:04.

As "Pomp and Circumstance" blared through the arena, Vader and Rude triumphantly lifted Savage onto their shoulders, parading him around the ring to a chorus of boos. Those boos suddenly turned to cheers though, when "Pomp and Circumstance" stopped and...

Ric Flair!!!

Monsoon: It's "The Nature Boy"!

McMahon: I don't believe this, Gorilla!

Monsoon: Ric Flair is here in the World Wrestling Federation!

As "The Nature Boy" made his way towards the ring, Vader and Rude put Savage down and went out onto the apron, with one man standing on each side of the ring steps to form a shield in front of Savage. Savage then climbed to the middle turnbuckle, pointing an accusing finger at Flair. Seeing Savage's "knights" in his path, Flair stopped. His expression of fear turned to a sly smile though, as he turned and gestured towards the curtain for someone else to join him. </details>

It was Savage's former girlfriend/valet, Elizabeth!!

Savage's anger suddenly turned to confusion as Elizabeth joined Flair on the aisle and the two locked arms. Rude and Vader started towards the pair, but Savage quickly yelled for them to stop as Summerslam 1991 came to a close!

Show Rating:

jTZYxxU.jpg

<hr>

Post-show notes:

- This is now my best show grade of the save, surpassing the 96 of Wrestlemania 7 by one point.

- The Randy Savage vs. Bret Hart 99 rated main event is now my highest match grade of the save, beating the record 98 that was set by Jake Roberts vs. Vader earlier in the show, which broke the record of 97 that was previously held by Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect from SNME: Mayhem. So, surprise, surprise, Bret Hart has been involved in 2 of my 3 best matches.

- I used my first ever "Psycho Sermon" before the show and it worked fairly well, with Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Jake Roberts, Vader, Ted DiBiase, Hulk Hogan, and The Dragon getting match bonuses because of the added motivation.

- Texas Tornado wasn't "reformed" of any of his habits after returning from rehab, but his Drinking habit percentage dropped from 15% to 0, his Soft Drug Use dropped from 45% to 22%, his Hard Drug Use dropped from 40% to 20%, his Pain Killer Abuse dropped from 36% to 18% and his Law Problems dropped from 16% to 10%.

- Ric Flair's "Nature Boy" gimmick got an initial rating of Great.

- Hopefully, someone got the Willis Reed reference.

- I tried to find a better pic of the Conquistadors so it wouldn't be obvious that the one I used couldn't possibly be Von Erich, but I couldn't find one.

- The Undertaker and The Ultimate Warrior just didn't seem to click and it made their match awkward. Which majorly sucks since I've had them feuding since Wrestlemania and I'm not quite done yet. I mean the feud will still serve its purpose either way since they're never gonna be the main event, but still.

- Jake Roberts and Vader had pretty good chemistry and if lifted their match. I'd say so! I never would have dreamed those two would pull a 98 match grade here.

- Due to time constraints, I had to push one match back to the pre-show. It was down to Crush vs. Smash or the Free Agent Battle Royal. I picked the Battle Royal since it was obviously not gonna score well anyway and I just thought it made more sense to cut. This shouldn't have been an issue, but I accidentally had all the show lengths set on 3 hours instead of 4 like I meant to. For this same reason, you'll also notice a few spots where there seemed to have been an angle but I didn't post a grade. Like after the Crush vs. Smash match for example.

- Horrible performance for Kamala in the "Davids vs. Goliaths" 6-man tag.

- Check out that match performance grade for The Barbarian in the next section!

Top 10 in-ring performances of the night:

Randy Savage - 98

Jake Roberts - 96

Bret Hart - 95

Hulk Hogan - 94

The Million Dollar Man - 94

Vader - 93

Terry Funk - 93

The Dragon - 92

The Barbarian - 92

The Big Boss Man - 92

The Next Day:

- Summerslam is now rated as a Legendary Event.

- I bought out Steve Keirn's Professional Wrestling Federation(PWF) for $64,004, pillaging Keirn himself and Jimmy Backlund(Jimmy Del Ray of the Heavenly Bodies) in the process. I did this because I'd been wanting to sign Keirn to a written contract, but he wouldn't go for it since he owned the PWF. Problem solved!

- I also bought out Sunny Beach's All-Star Championship Wrestling for a song at $1802. And no I didn't miss a 0. I pillaged Mr. Perfect's dad, Larry Hennig, and Mike Enos in the process.

- Hercules thinks Timothy Well is turning into a good worker and is worth getting behind.

- Brian Pillman thinks The Lumberjack should learn how to sell and isn't worth pushing until he does.

- Shawn Michaels thinks the Berzerker sells like crap and demands I cut him and hire someone else.

- The Ultimate Warrior thinks Doug Furnas is a waste of time since he doesn't connect with the fans.

Author's Note: When I was initially posting this diary in the 2016 forums real-life kinda got a bit hectic around this point in the diary and I had to go a little light on my write-ups for the months of September, October, and November. They're certainly not bare-bones or anything, but they're not quite as in-depth as the shows from Summerslam and before. The PPV write-ups in particular, are lacking compared to what came before them. I thought about fleshing them out a bit more as I was tidying up the old posts for the move to the 2020 forums, but I've decided to leave them as-is. Ultimately, I just think the time I would have used to beef them up could be better spent writing future shows that will keep this diary moving along at its current steady pace. Expect the more in-depth style to return starting with the December shows.

Gorilla Monsoon and Vince McMahon welcome everyone to the show, and announce that Bobby "The Brain" Heenan will be back in his regular commentator's position next week as he's still licking his wounds from the beating Mr. Perfect gave him at Summerslam. They also announce Jake Roberts has suffered a severe head injury as a result of being Powerbombed on the steel ring steps by Vader at Summerslam and will be out of action indefinitely. They end their intro by sending us to "Mean" Gene Okerlund, who's got a special guest.

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is standing by with the newest members of the WWF roster, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and Elizabeth. Surprising no one, Flair announces that he's in the WWF for one reason only, to carry on his legacy by becoming an 8 time World Champion. "I hear that Randy Savage is "the man" around here, but that can't be true! Because to be the man, WOOOO, you gotta beat the man, and unless I've gone senile, Randy Savage has never stepped into the ring, with The Nature Boy! WOOOO!" He ends the promo by warning a certain WWF Television Champion that there's only one "Nature Boy" and the WWF isn't big enough for the both of them!

The Big Boss Man is arguing with Commissioner Graham backstage, furious over what happened at Summerslam and demanding a rematch. Graham's first reaction is concern, as he wonders aloud if Boss Man should even be competing so soon after all the blood he lost against Koloff at Summerslam. After being assured it wasn't an issue, Graham says there's nothing he can do for Boss Man since he already got his promised rematch. And there's nothing he can do about Koloff's new friend interfering since the match was no disqualification. He can have a rematch if Koloff will go for it though, but Graham doubts he will.

Bret Hart cuts a promo on The Kingdom. He says the WWF Championship will have to wait because he hasn't forgotten what Vader and Rick Rude did to his brother Owen and Jim Neidhart at ringside during his match with Savage at Summerslam. He tells them Owen may be out for a while, but Jim will be ready by Saturday Night's Main Event and the original Hart Foundation will ride once again! That is if Rude and Vader have the guts to face them head-on.

The Kingdom's first order of business is for Rick Rude and Vader to accept the challenge of Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart for a tag team match at SNME: Backlash. Savage then addresses the elephant in the room, that, of course, being the challenge of Ric Flair and his former girlfriend Elizabeth.

Back from commercial, Missy Hyatt is in the ring to interview a hobbled, and bandaged Hulk Hogan. Hyatt starts by asking him about the condition of Roddy Piper, and Hogan assures her that Piper will be back soon. Next, she asks him about who attacked him in the locker room at Summerslam, Bigelow, Steamboat, or both? He said he was completely blindsided though, and didn't see his attacker, but he was gonna take both out anyway. He finishes by addressing The Dragon specifically.

Hogan: I knew all along, Missy, that The Dragon was just your regular ole run-of-the-mill scumbag, brother! And all his rantin' and ravin' about "honor" was just a load of crap, dude! Since she has won the Battle Royal, I would have put Bull Nakano directly to the finals

That's a fair point and makes perfect sense, Genox. Unfortunately, due to a lack of competent female workers available to me right now, I've got to be really careful how I book the division if I want it to last long-term. Now, that in and of itself doesn't negate your point, but I can't really explain why I went the way I did without spoiling upcoming events. I hope that makes sense and doesn't seem like too much of a cop-out.

I really love that Nakano's win lead to something big, she can take that to the grave. Also... Atsushi Onita  I'm glued

Thanks, Blodyxe, I just wish I'd had room for Nakano's Battle Royal win on the main Summerslam show. Onita's great too, but a bit of an odd fit for '91 WWF. I know they had Tenryu and Kitao against Demolition at Wrestlemania 7 as part of their deal with SWS, but that was an odd fit as well. Hopefully, I can make it work.

Don't worry. Databases from the late 80s/early 90s lack women and the few available are mostly japanese. I had a friend with the same problem

Yup. Ideally, I probably should have held off on starting the division with so few options. Luckily though, with the save taking place in an era where most tv episodes were top-to-bottom squash matches, I should be able to hide that initial lack of talent a bit easier.
