Georgia Championship Wrestling (83' DOTT Mod)

Recommended Posts

1982 outside of the business was a year of President Reagan declaring a War on Drugs', the Falklands War, an assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein, the introduction of Compact Disc Players and Charles Brooks Jr. becoming the first person in US history to be executed by lethal injection. In the wrestling business industry legends such as Fritz Von Erich, Buddy Rogers and El Santo would all retire from in-ring action. WWF Champion Bob Backlund would battle to a 'no contest' vs NWA Champion Ric Flair and Hollywood would cross paths with wrestling as the feud between Jerry Lawler & Andy Kaufman would make headlines across the country.

1983 would be the year outside the wrestling business that the ARPANET officially changes to using the Internet Protocol, creating the Internet. Compact Discs and players are released for the first time in the United States and other markets outside of Japan and President Ronald Reagan calls the Soviet Union an "evil empire" before nine months later signing a bill creating Martin Luther King Day. In the wrestling business going into 1983? Nick Bockwinkel is still AWA champion thanks to his manager Bobby Heenan but they continue to have a young gun named Hulk Hogan nipping at their heels fresh off his Hollywood stint as Thunderlips in Rocky III but Verne Gagne seems reluctant to pull the trigger. The NWA and their overarching territory system are still very much alive and well with Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (also known as Jim Crockett Promotions) being the flag bearer for the alliance whilst Georgia Championship Wrestling continues to retain it's coveted national timeslot on TBS having recently changed the shows name to World Championship Wrestling. And Vince McMahon Jr. has officially taken over control of the WWF from his father Vince Sr with his first move to be pulling the company from the NWA.

Jim Barnett was brought in to steady the ship of Georgia Championship Wrestling and had done a fine job but in late 83' he would sell of his shares of the company to a conglomerate of NWA wrestlers and relinquish control. We're gonna bring that forward a few months to the beginning of the year but instead of being headed by the Jack & Jerry Brisco it will be headed by Dusty Rhodes, my UC for this journey, who left his spot as booker in Florida to run GCW alongside Ole Anderson.

TV and it's write-ups will be kept relatively simple and basic to stay in keeping with the presentation of the products for that time too. Events will likely be slightly more fleshed out. The only alteration I've made to the data is making the NWA World Tag Titles an alliance belt as opposed to an only MACW belt. So the World Title and World Tag are alliance belts.

Same here. I'd enjoy seeing how things were going in GCW prior to Black Saturday.

You know I'm here for this, buddy. Great period of time to take on.

Let's do this!! Love my territory diaries!

Thank you for the early support friends. Thrilled to have you all checking in. First show/preview will likely be up at some point this evening or tomorrow morning.

World Championship Wrestling

January Week 1 1983

Announcer: Gordon Solie

Interview

Gordon Solie welcomes us to Georgia Championship Wrestling. He is immediately joined by The Iron Sheik who touts and boasts of his strength and greatness. Qualities that Orndorff doesn't possess and so is undeserving of the National title. Sheik is challenging Orndorff!

Grade: 62

Wendell Cooley vs Larry Zybyzsko

Wendell gets in a reasonable amount of offense but the ending was never in doubt. Larry toyed with his opponent for a bit then got the 3-count after a Shoulder Breaker.

Winner: Larry Zybyzsko

Rating: 48

Post-Match Interview

Larry joins Gordon at the desk. He cuts a promo on that 'entitled, punk kid' Bruno Sammartino Jr. He retired his father and he'll retire the kid too before his career even starts.

Rating: 42

The Armstrongs (Bob & Brad) vs Enhancement Talent

'Bullet' Bob makes his return to Georgia in convincing fashion as the father and son duo look efficient and comfortable in putting away the no-name talents swiftly.

Winners: The Armstrongs

Rating: 41

Post-Match Interview

The Armstrongs join Gordon Solie at the desk and state their awareness of the National Tag Titles currently being vacant and that Bob wants to become a 7-time champion. The Armstrongs want the belts!

Rating: 50

Chief Joe Lightfoot vs Buzz Sawyer

Lightfoot is a fine hand but is absolutely no match for the 'Mad Dog' who is wearing some head gear but it distracts him none. If anything it infuriates him more. Buzz wins in a little over 3 minutes with Ole Anderson commentating alongside Solie and laying into Stan Hansen on commentary.

Winner: 'Mad Dog' Buzz Sawyer

Rating: 43

Post-Match Interview

Gordon remarks on Sawyer's headgear which infuriates Buzz. Solie says we have footage that may explain this and goes to cut to footage of Sawyer having his head shaved in the aftermath of a tag match at the Omni. After a few seconds the feed cuts out and Sawyer is back at the desk gnawing on the video tape and then stomping on it. He and Ole cut a fiery promo on Tommy Rich and explain that Rich's days of being able to walk are numbered.

Rating: 63

Brian Blair vs Dick Murdoch

Brian Blair gives it the old college try and gets some offence in on Murdoch with the crowd on his side but 'Dirty Dick' is one of the toughest SOB's in the game and ends things with a Brainbuster and the 3-count.

Winner: 'Dirty' Dick Murdoch

Rating: 55

Post-Match Interview

Murdoch grabs a towel and slings it over his shoulder as he joins Solie at the desk but before he can say anything Gordon introduces a special guest at this time which turns out to be Dusty Rhodes! The two share some words with Dusty praising their past and Murdoch looking less than thrilled with the whole affair as he reaffirms that they chose to go their seperate ways.

Rating: 74

Dusty Rhodes vs Tom Prichard

Dusty steps into the ring and offers to put on a show for the audience whilst he's out. Tom Prichard steps forward to 'The American Dream' and gives his best but the 23 year old never really troubled The Dream and lost in a little over 5 minutes.

Winner: 'The American Dream' Dusty Rhodes

Rating: 57

Paul Orndorff vs Les Thornton

Thornton is a former 4-time NWA Junior Heavyweight champion but at 47 years old is a few years past his prime. Orndorff is in his prime however and the current National champion. Fairly even for stretches eventually youth and physicality shone through with Orndorff getting the better of the Englishman and ending things with a stiff lariat to please the studio crowd.

Winner: 'Mr Wonderful' Paul Orndorff

Rating: 63

Post-Match Interview

Orndorff joins Gordon at the desk to address The Iron Sheik. He asserts that it's Sheik who should prove himself if he wants an opportunity at the title and he lays down a challenge. If Sheik can win his match next week in quicker time than he wins his match, then Sheik will have a title shot.

Rating: 62

Interview

Mr. Solie says they'll be wrapping up momentarily but before they do he is to be joined by 'Wildfire' Tommy Rich. Rich appears to address the statements earlier in the evening from Sawyer and Anderson but before he gets going the duo strike and tear onto the set pummelling at Rich. The audience come unglued at the sight of Stan Hansen who thunders onto set and sends Sawyer & Anderson stumbling with stiff forearms. The brawl continues as the broadcast comes to an end and we're reminded to watch again next week!

Rating: 67

Herrbear - 5/5

Old School Fan - 5/5

horseman4lyf - 5/5

fallingstar - 5/5

Dalton - 5/5

A clean sweep on the predictions. Feedback on the format is welcomed. It's scaled back which is to keep in with the time period but also avoid burning myself out from writing. They'll be a bit beefier likely for the bigger shows.

I remember Sawyer and Rich having some bloody knock down drag outs back in the day. Sawyer was another talent who let his demons take control, but boy could Buzz cut some good promos. Back in this time period GCW had it going on. Can't wait until the next card.

Big fan of all the post match interviews! Allows us to get a peak at everyone's character.

Thank you both. Glad it was enjoyed. Appreciate the feedback. Next 'card' will be going up later today.
