New York City… paying homage to the man…

NYCW The Stomper Memorial Show 2023

Sunday, Week 4, March 2023

Josh Allen Park, Buffalo, New York

Attendance: 17,254

STOMPER QUARTER FINAL MATCH: The Biggins Boys vs. Honest Enterprises (Honest Frank Jr & Magnum Kobe)

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Honest Enterprises defeated The Biggins Boys in 10:17 when Magnum Kobe pinned Bart Biggins with The Glorious Red.

Rating: 65

Massive surprise upset for Honest Enterprises here as they prove they’re on the same page and eliminate one of the favourites in the quarter-finals.

STOMPER CUP QUARTER FINAL MATCH: Cross River Connection vs. Samoan Wrecking Crew

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Cross River Connection defeated Samoan Wrecking Crew in 8:19 when Loa Laki was counted out while fighting Prime Time Jack Pryde. Cross River Connection make defence number two of the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 47

The Samoans look like killers here, but the champs go through and retain their titles. At this rate every match is going to have massive huge implications.

STOMPER CUP QUARTER FINAL MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. The Chop Shop

In a decent match, Vessey Combat Club defeated The Chop Shop in 8:21 when Ray Cavalero pinned Eric Mortenson with a Vessey Locks.

Rating: 53

VCC force their way through to the semis with a dominant performance of their own. They’ve got eyes on Honest Enterprises who they could meet in the final.

STOMPER CUP QUARTER FINAL MATCH: The Powers of Pain vs. The Fantastic Express

In a decent match, The Fantastic Express defeated The Powers of Pain in 7:39 when Zippy Deverell pinned The Juggernaut after using a foreign object.

Rating: 56

When in doubt; cheat. The Fantastics overcome one of our lower-level, yet impressive tag teams. It makes a difference from last year where we had a lot of makeshift teams.

STOMPER CUP SEMI FINAL MATCH: Cross River Connection vs. Honest Enterprises (Honest Frank Jr & Magnum Kobe)

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Cross River Connection defeated Honest Enterprises in 9:53 when Honest Frank Jr was disqualified while fighting Larry Vessey on the outside. Cross River Connection make defence number three of the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 67

Larry can’t help but interfere and causes Honest Frank Jr to swing a chair and hit Prime Time in view of the referee. Another sketchy finish, but CRC are through to the finals.

GANG WARS MATCH: Danny Hagman, For Sure & Charlie Corner vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith, Thom Barrowman & Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Danny Hagman, Fro Sure and Charlie Corner drew with Davis Wayne Newton, Thom Barrowman and Bulldozer Brandon Smith in 10:05 when the referee lost control and stopped the match.

Rating: 65

A good old-fashioned NYCW draw because of chaotic brawling. I loved this sort of matches and I’d train the crowd to love them too.

STOMPER CUP SEMI FINAL MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. The Fantastic Express

In a decent match, The Fantastic Express defeated Vessey Combat Club in 8:24 when Zippy Deverell pinned JP Barnham with a Fantastic Flashbang.

Rating: 58

Clean win for The Fantastic Express. Honest Enterprises were at ringside to distract VCC, but never actually got involved. Big win for the World tag champs as they continue to prove themselves as the true heel team in NYCW, especially refusing to defend their titles throughout the tournament.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: The Masked Mauler vs. Angry Gilmore ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated Angry Gilmore in 9:32 by pinfall with a Piledriver. The Masked Mauler wins the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 66

A massive, MASSIVE, clean win for The Masked Mauler over the former Heavyweight champion. This was the idea Angry Gilmore had suggested to us and he even recommended giving himself a short Tri-State title reign so that Mauler got something other than an unbelievable rub. Now that’s veteran wrestling star behaviour.

NYCW EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, LA Star #1 defeated Riley McManus in 21:39 by count out after Fern Hathaway convinced Riley McManus to walk away.

Rating: 70

Despicable behaviour from the champion in one of our best ever singles matches. LA Star #1 has twice been robbed of glory by the wily champion. The crowd were livid, but in a good way.

ANGLE: The Cross River Connection threaten to withold a shot at the NYCW tag titles, unless The Fantastics put up the COTT World tag team titles too. Fantastics don't seem sure, but when CRC call them cowards, they angrily relent.

Rating: 78

STOMPER CUP FINAL, NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Cross River Connection © vs. The Fantastic Express ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Cross River Connection defeated The Fantastic Express in 10:26 when Prime Time Jack Pryde pinned Rafe Sashay with a Prime Time Perfection. Cross River Connection win the COTT World Tag Team. Cross River Connection win the Stomper Memorial Tag Team Cup. Cross River Connection make defence number four of the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 67

I’m not going to lie. I was expecting something a little better from these two, but apparently there was a lack of selling throughout, which just goes to show why The Biggins Boys are such excellent compliments to both these teams.

OVERALL RATING: 66

406,702 viewers tuned in to watch us remember Stomper and we made a healthy $169,210 profit for the month. Now that I realised how important The Biggins Boys were to our matches, we’d have to reintroduce them into the tag team title race.

Next time… a slow month…

Results:

John Lions - 9/10

KyTeran & Theheel - 8/10

Herrbear & eayragt - 4/10

Scottie - 2/10

I should probably apologise for the draw in the Gang Wars match, as it's cheap. But John Lions gets special props for calling every aspect of the show other than that from start to finish. Incredible scenes.

New York City… catching up with ourselves…

May passed in a blur of activity, but with limited big news stories. I was feeling more comfortable about how to lay-out the tv show and all of our feuds were bubbling along nicely. My focus was on the technical, backstage operations, so for the first time in my tenure, I handed the book to Larry to let him build up to Gang Wars at the end of the month.

[*]‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus refuses to accept such a cheating victory. That was just a warm-up. But a reminder that if they can’t do that again this Sunday, then LA Star #1 will be out of chances. Rating: 66

[*]OVERALL RATING: 72 – 0.27 (204,780 viewers)

I caught up on all the action on my phone as NYCW was now streaming on mobiles. Isn’t technology wonderful. I started watching highlights of American Machine who had just announced his official retirement from professional wrestling.

Next time… Gang Wars 2023; LA Star #1’s last chance…

New York City… Our biggest attendance to date…

My previous month’s work was about to come to fruition. I’d been creating the first of it’s kind (for an independent company), all-in-one production house and musical stage. We had increased our live experience to large, our broadcast quality to cutting edge and now used major licensed music on all shows. It was going to cost us a fortune. But that all started next month. For now we had Gang Wars to produce. LA Star #1 having failed twice to beat The Georgia Bulldog, now had to win tonight to get a third chance.

Sam Keith approached me backstage at Josh Allen Park in Buffalo. He was interested in plans for this evening and just happened to mention that they’d had to vacate the COTT United States title after Deacon Darkhold signed an exclusive contract with GSW. Taking my opportunity, I asked him about the COTT’s penchant for vacancy and he smiled knowingly. He explained that it’s better to vacate a title and keep everyone happy, than cause dissention. I couldn’t help but push it. I asked if he enjoyed being the chairman. He looked at me calmly and changed the subject to Ray Cavalero (of all people). Keith had an eye for the future and was absolutely convinced he could mould him into something even more special. I wasn’t about to ruin Ray’s chance for some truly invaluable lessons.

NYCW Gang Wars 2023

Sunday, Week 4, May 2023

Josh Allen Park, Buffalo, New York

Attendance: 20,607

GANG WARS MATCH: Charlie Corner & The Powers of Pain vs. Spike Sylvain & Samoan Wercking Crew

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Charlie Corner and The Powers of Pain defeated Spike Sylvain and Samoan Wrecking Crew in 10:19 when Charlie Corner pinned Loa Afu with a Corner Cutter.

Rating: 47

Solid opener with the guys who we don’t have anything else for. It was a shame to see Charlie Corner in this match. But at least he got the win.

GANG WARS MATCH: Brutus Milano & The Biggins Boys vs. Denny King & The Chop Shop

In a decent match, Denny King and The Chop Shop defeated Brutus Milano and The Biggins Boys in 10:26 when Denny King pinned Brutus Milano with a Superplex.

Rating: 57

A rare pinfall win for Denny King here as I felt suddenly nostalgic for 2020 NYCW. We protected the Biggins Boys and made sure that the ‘man who carries this company’ did his fair share of carrying.

GANG WARS MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. Honest Enterprises

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Vessey Combat Club (Magnum Kobe, JP Barnham and Ray Cavalero) defeated Honest Enterprises (Honest Frank Jr., Andrew Harper and The Masked Mauler) in 21:51 when Magnum Kobe pinned Honest Frank Jr. with The Glorious Red.

Rating: 61

Big win for the newly face Magnum Kobe who looks set to branch out and up the card as a member of the Vessey Combat Club. This is a disastrous result for Honest Enterprises who can’t even claim to be the best stable in the company anymore.

GANG WARS MATCH: Danny Hagman & Cross River Connection vs. Davis Wayne Newton & The Fantastic Express

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Danny Hagman and Cross River Connection defeated Davis Wayne Newton and The Fantastic Express in 21:33 when Danny Hagman pinned Rafe Sashay with a Missing Piece.

Rating: 67

Great match from six men who can stake a claim to be the future of both the company and maybe one day, the industry. The long-running feuds between Hagman and DWN, and CRC and The Fantastics would make up the key important feuds of this, our biggest year to date.

GANG WARS MATCH: LA Star #1, Angry Gilmore & Fro Sure vs. Riley McManus, Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Thom Barrowman

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Riley McManus, Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Thom Barrowman defeated LA Star #1, Angry Gilmore and Fro Sure in 22:21 when Bulldozer Brandon Smith pinned LA Star #1 after interference from Fern Hathaway.

Rating: 68

Disaster for LA Star #1 in our main event as The Georgia Bulldog’s main squeeze Fern Hathaway earns her paycheque for the evening by interfering and stealing the upstart hero’s last chance at glory.

OVERALL RATING: 67

435,671 viewers tuned in and our final month before the new production costs kicked in brought us $229,813 profit, which made me feel much better about the gamble I’d taken. There was more backstage work to be done, but we were heading into one of the biggest shows of the year so I couldn’t take my eye off the ball just yet.

Next time… LA Star #1 gets desperate…

New York City… where good men go to war and lay it all on the line for the gold…

NYCW Empire Superstars #17

Friday, Week 1, June 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 4,143

TAG TEAM MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. Denny King & Spike Sylvain

In a decent match, Denny King and Spike Sylvain defeated Vessey Combat Club in 7:44 when Denny King pinned JP Barnham with a Superplex.

Rating: 56

The Denny King-aisance continues with a big win over the promising tag team. Whether this is part of a new trend, or just a bad day at the office for VCC is yet to be seen.

ANGLE: Honest Enterprises come out. Honest Frank is disappointed at the defeat, but they’re a group of truth-tellers. And if one little hiccup derails them, then what was it all for? Honest Frank Jr grabs the mic.

“Yeah dad, what was it all for? Jesus Christ, we’re out here week in and week out, and for what? So that a bunch of no-ones and some Japanese guy whose not fit to lace my boots beat us? It’s not good enough. THIS IS NOT WHAT I WAS PROMISED!”

“Calm down Junior, now isn’t the time.”

“It is absolutely the time! From now on, we’re going to be running this team properly. From now on, I am going to start making the decisions. You’ve been too soft! And as for you!” and he slaps Andrew Harper across the face. “Get your head in the game. Bully Enforcer, don’t make me laugh. We were better off with Spike on the team. From no on, no more mistakes. If I see any mistakes, you’ll all come to regret it.”

Rating: 71

Frank Jr as an entitled, whinging cry baby is an act I can totally get behind. He’s got his dad’s gift for mic work too it seems.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: Billy Chase vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In an extremely short match, The Masked Mauler defeated Billy Chase in 4:56 by pinfall with a Piledriver. The Masked Mauler makes defence number three of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 43

Following the ‘pep talk’ Masked Mauler does as instructed and gets a dominant win to keep hold of the Tri-State Regional Title.

ANGLE: After the match Honest Frank Jr pats Mauler on the arm and loudly tells him he did a good job. And then stares at Harper, as if to say ‘this is what I expect.’ Harper does not seem thrilled with the younger member of the Enterprise. Or in fact; Honest Frank Sr’s lack of voice. Frank Jr then introduces the newest tryout member of the team… ‘The Nebraska Stud’ Phil Anders.

Rating: 79

At this rate we’ll be removing the Jr from Frank Jr’s name and just christening him Honest Frank.

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Biggins Boys vs. Honest Enterprises

In a decent match, The Biggins Boys defeated Honest Frank Jr. and Phil Anders in 8:10 when Bart Biggins pinned Phil Anders with a B-Dropper.

Rating: 59

Oof! The new voice of the Enterprise comes down to Earth with a thud and his hand-picked teammate takes the pinfall. What does the young welp do now?

ANGLE: The Fantastic Express are fired up at their recent loss of World titles to the CRC. They’re sick of the act those two are putting on. Always making stupid remarks and pretending to be stupid. Zippy and Rafe know the truth. The CRC are egomaniacs, obsessed with adulation and they’ll do anything to keep it coming. It’s pathetic and they’re invoking their rematch clause for Summer in the City. One fall to a finish, winner takes both belts. And if the CRC need more help in deciding, just imagine all the praise they’ll get if they can beat The Fantastics again.

Rating: 78

Great promo as these two become more and more comfortable as characters and on the mic.

SINGLES MATCH: Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Rafe Sashay

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Rafe Sashay defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde in 7:55 by pinfall after using a foreign object.

Rating: 65

They follow-up the dynamite promo with a pinfall win in singles competition too. All four of these guys are getting better and better in the ring. Just need to work on that selling.

ANGLE: Thom Barrowman is backstage with Whistler and he has some choice words for Fro Sure. Firstly; dumb name. Secondly; dumb guy. Thirdly; dumb gimmick. Finally; dumb music (this draws ooo’s from the audience). He’s been at the top of his game for twenty-five years and he’ll be damned is some jumped-up popinjay no-one is going to beat him.

Rating: 68

Thom Barrowman’s transition from bitter veteran to Angry-Old-Man-Yells-at-Clouds has been fun to watch.

SINGLES MATCH: Fro Sure vs. Andrew Harper

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Andrew Harper defeated Fro Sure in 9:46 by pinfall with a Spike Slam following interference from Thom Barrowman.

Rating: 66

Andrew Harper didn’t need the interference to win, but I’m not sure Honest Frank Jr sees it that way. Good match between these two as Harper continues to build up his momentum and popularity in very slow and subtle ways.

ANGLE: Backstage Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Angry Gilmore are already fighting, surrounded by security guards, road agents and referees. They’re convinced to take to the ring by Sam Keith.

Rating: 83

Just a bunch of legends, all together on an NYCW tv show. We’ve come a long way.

TAG TEAM MATCH: LA Star #1 & Angry Gilmore vs. Riley McManus & Bulldozer Brandon Smith

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Riley McManus and Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated LA Star #1 and Angry Gilmore in 20:09 when Bulldozer Brandon Smith pinned Angry Gilmore by using underhanded tactics.

Rating: 69

Bulldozer gets the pinfall in a great tag team match. LA Star #1 had to put up with Riley taunting him with the title throughout the match. He’s such a fantastic a-hole.

OVERALL RATING: 71

0.28 (210,101 viewers) this time, which is a step in the right direction. Backstage, Sam Keith told me that the COTT had decided that American Flash was going to win the vacant COTT United States title. Seemed a decent idea in fairness. It was cool that he cared enough about my opinion to actually tell me things like that. Almost like he was checking for my reaction.

NYCW Empire Superstars #18

Friday, Week 2, June 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 4,304

SINGLES MATCH: Magnum Kobe vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Magnum Kobe defeated Davis Wayne Newton in 7:54 by submission with a Magnum Deathlock.

Rating: 67

Hell of an opener there. Sometimes we just want to watch quality in-ring product and this was that. Sure DWN lost, but he could handle that and it was good to ride the wave of momentum Magnum was experiencing since his face turn.

ANGLE: Frank and Frank Jr are backstage arguing. Whistler approaches to find out what it’s all about and basically; Frank Jr doesn’t like the fact that Harper needed help to win last week and the Enterprise should move on without him. The discussion gets heated and Andrew Harper joins them. Frank Jr, when Harper’s back is turned assaults his former team-mate before yelling to his dad “That’s how we do stuff in our family, DAD. Don’t you forget it and make sure that chump is cleaned away before I return.”

Rating: 48

Deliciously obnoxious.

SINGLES MATCH: The Eagle vs. Honest Frank Jr.

In a decent match, The Eagle defeated Honest Frank Jr. in 6:30 by pinfall with a Freedom Slam.

Rating: 60

And then he goes out and loses again. The universe is very quick to punish poor behaviour. Andrew Harper staggered out midway through the match to laugh and then flipped off the young kid and walked away. Apparently done with the group for good.

ANGLE: Cross River Connection are in the ring.

“How you doing; Pepper the Champion?”

“Pretty good; Prime Time the Champion.”

“Did you see what those Fantabulous boys said about us by the way?”

“Something about being awesome, and good-looking and well-loved?”

“Yeah I thought it sounded like jealousy too. Bless their hearts. They also said, we don’t take stuff seriously,” Prime Time says.

“Preposterous. Poppycock,” Perfect Pepper responds with a wink.

“Apparently we’re egomaniacs with an obsession for adulation.”

“Those are big words PT.”

“They sure are Pep,” Prime Time responds with a smile. He then faces the camera, his face serious. “But here’s the thing. You might think we’re silly and we don’t take things seriously. But we’re here, with both tag team championships over our shoulder. Two of the most successful tag team wrestlers in NYCW history. We might joke, but don’t think for second that we don’t see EVERYTHING around here. If you want to call us names, or threaten us with violence, go right ahead. But be careful what you wish for!”

“Damn right. If you call the thunder, don’t complain when it kicks your ass. Challenge ACCEPTED!”

“You Goddam right it is Pep!”

Rating: 82

A sudden and effective shift in character there for the CRC. And the crowd were IN TO IT. Fantastic stuff.

NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Samoan Wrecking Crew vs. Cross River Connection ©

In a decent match, Cross River Connection defeated Samoan Wrecking Crew in 7:46 when Prime Time Jack Pryde pinned Loa Afu with a Prime Time Perfection. Cross River Connection make defence number four of the COTT World Tag Team. Cross River Connection make defence number six of the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 63

Short, brutal and dominating. Not the typical CRC match, but one which sends a clear message to The Fantastics.

SINGLES MATCH: Angry Gilmore vs. Spike Sylvain

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Spike Sylvain defeated Angry Gilmore in 8:20 by pinfall with a Punk-N-Nasty.

Rating: 66

A clean win for Spike, over Angry Gilmore. What is going on? Well, turns out that Bulldozer was at ringside distracting Gilmore throughout the match and costing him the win.

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is up on his favourite balcony in The Empire Ballroom. He’s up there to get the best view possible of his long-running opponent Danny Hagman. From up there he can see every little move, every little tick. He’s learning everything there is to learn about The Pittsburgh Kid. Plus, from up here, he doesn’t have to put up with the smell of cheesesteak sandwiches.

Rating: 80

This guy was properly settling into his character.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Hagman vs. Sal DiMeo

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Sal DiMeo defeated Danny Hagman in 7:36 by pinfall with a Powerbomb after Eric Mortenson interfered.

Rating: 61

Another shocking result as Danny succumbs to defeat, in no small part from being distracted by DWN. All the little guys are getting their big wins for the year.

ANGLE: LA Star #1 hits the ring.

“It’s been a long year New York. Too long. If seen my best friend leave, and my plans torn apart. But I’ve done the best I can to overcome the obstacles put in my way. Through grit and determination I have tried, with everything I have to get to the top of the mountain. But it’s that last ridge that’ll kill you. I could complain about Riley McManus’ behaviour. Or how he gets others to do his dirty work for him. Or how Fern Hathaway sticks her nose where it’s not wanted. But that’s not me. I am not that guy. I’m just a regular guy, doing the best he can. Like you, I don’t want to complain. I believe in fairness. With that in mind, I have a request of The Georgia Bulldog. Our Empire champion. I want one more match. I know you haven’t always been like you are now. You used to believe in the same things I do. And when life got tough, you started to blame other people. Well I won’t do that. I am going to stand here’ as a man. And politely request my shot. No DQs, no count-outs, no Fern Hathaway. Just two men, standing tall. Face-to-face, to see whose the best. Whaddaya say champ? Have you got it in you?”

Slaves and Bulldozers plays and here comes Bulldozer Brandon Smith…

Rating: 79

Heartfelt promo there and one which could well make the man. LA Star stands at a crossroads.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated LA Star #1 in 17:46 by pinfall with a Backdrop Driver following interference from Fern Hathaway.

Rating: 71

What a match.

ANGLE: After the match is over, Fern beckons Riley McManus down to ringside. He lays a beating on LA Star before grabbing a microphone. “You such a whiny b*tch, my GOD! You come out here having lost over and over again, and ask me to be a man. Son, this title means I’m all the man I care to be. I don’t need to prove myself to you anymore. You’re a glorified tag team nobody whose lucked his way into my orbit. You’re pathetic. But y’know what, I think more lessons are needed. You say I should put the title up, on the line, with no Fern, or DQ or count-out. You want me to give you something and you’re not willing to offer anything yourself. I know I’m better than you, that’s why I have the title. So if you want this from me, I want something from you. The only thing you have left to give. I want… your mask. Let’s see how keen you are to take a shot at the champ when your entire being is on the line. Without that mask, you’re just little old George. The kid from LA, with no real friends and no prospects. So that’s what it costs. If you want to be the champ, I want it all. Your call little boy.”

Rating: 79

I don’t know where the Hell that came from, but Riley just delivered the promo of a lifetime.

OVERALL RATING: 74

0.27 (208,625 viewers) tuned in to see that absolute work of art. I really felt like I was on the kind of booking hot-streak which only comes alone once every twenty years of so. History, in the making. I remained buzzing about the show all week. I barely even acknowledged the news that USPW had signed Randy Bumfhole.

Next time… LA Star’s response and the final build to Summer in the City…

Two shows left, and LA Star’s response waiting. Onwards…

NYCW Empire Superstars #19

Friday, Week 3, June 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 4,573

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Biggins Boys vs. The Chop Shop

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Biggins Boys defeated The Chop Shop in 7:48 when Bart Biggins pinned Eric Mortenson with a B-Dropper.

Rating: 65

Another super opener as the general quality of our in-ring product was improving each week. The Biggins were building momentum just in time to roll beyond Summer in the City.

ANGLE: Denny King is backstage with Whistler. He’s heard that Honest Frank Jr is looking for new recruits for Honest Enterprises and he’d like to offer his services. He’ll do whatever it takes to win, is tougher than a two dollar steak and is experiencing a Denny King-aissance. And he’ll go out there and prove it.

Rating: 51

Love Denny.

SINGLES MATCH: Chip Martin vs. Denny King

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Denny King defeated Chip Martin in 8:25 by pinfall with a Superplex.

Rating: 47

#King-aissance

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is backstage where he is being beaten down by The Fantastic Express. Perfect Pepper Pelton comes running back to make the save, and takes on both Deverell and Sashay by himself. Pryde recovers and goes to help, but makes the mistake of coming from behind Pelton, who thinks he is an approaching enemy and floors him too. In the confusion, The Fantastic Express escape.

Rating: 73

These two teams are causing each other all sorts of issues. CRC are struggling as a team for the first time ever.

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Powers of Pain vs. Honest Enterprises

In a decent match, The Powers of Pain defeated Honest Frank Jr and The Masked Mauler in 8:09 when The Eagle pinned The Masked Mauler with The Pain Train.

Rating: 61

Oh my oh my. Another loss for Frank Jr as he appears to be running the stable into the ground. Honest Frank Sr just watched this catastrophe unfold with a look of disappointment on his face.

ANGLE: After the match, a visibly angry Frank Jr appears to be blaming Masked Mauler for the defeat and launches into an attack on his partner. Finally Honest Frank steps in between them and gets clobbered by Jr, who looks momentarily shocked and then leaves his dad and team partner down, shouting about how it’s all his dad’s fault.

Rating: 61

Is this the end of Honest Enterprises?

SINGLES MATCH: Perfect Pepper Pelton vs. Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell defeated Perfect Pepper Pelton in 7:57 by pinfall with a handful of tights.

Rating: 66

Perfect Pepper loses and doesn’t have Prime Time alongside him this time.

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is backstage. He was happy to see Hagman lose last week. This week, the little punk can see what a real man looks like in the ring.

Rating: 80

Simple and effective.

SINGLES MATCH: Brutus Milano vs. David Wayne Newton

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Brutus Milano defeated Davis Wayne Newton in 5:34 by submission with an Italian Backbreaker after DWn was distracted by Renegade playing.

Rating: 63

Hagman never actually showed up, and the musical cue was enough to give Milano yet another win.

ANGLE: LA Star #1 is in a dark room somewhere backstage. He’s holding his masked face in his hands.

“McManus wants the mask. The champion wants me to put up my most valued possession in exchange for a chance at the title. He thinks it’ll be too high a price for me to pay. But this is where he and I are different. He thinks, I’m hiding behind the mask. I’m not. I wear it out of honour of my past. Of my friendship. Something he knows nothing about. He’s the one truly hiding. Because without the title, what is he? Just some guy. A B+ player anywhere else. He doesn’t realise how lucky he is to have the title to cling to. He wants my mask? He can have it. Because I’m The Star and I only needs one shot to make history. Hell, it might be time to take off the mask anyway. Riley McManus, you’re on. But bring it all, because without your valet, without the rules and without your little buddies, it’s just down to me and you. And I don’t like your chances.”

Rating: 79

NYCW EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Danny Hagman vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus ©

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Riley McManus defeated Danny Hagman in 19:47 by pinfall with a Slingshot Suplex after Fern Hathaway interfered. Riley McManus makes defence number eight of the NYCW Empire Heavyweight.

Rating: 67

And just to run salt into the wounds, Riley wins by Fern-aference.

OVERALL RATING: 69

0.26 (202,356 viewers) this week, which is a touch disappointing considering the quality of shows we’re pumping out at the moment. With one show left before Summer in the City, most matches were set already, including the main event for the NYCW Empire Title.

NYCW Empire Superstars #20

Friday, Week 4, June 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 4,682

TAG TEAM MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. The Biggins Boys

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Vessey Combat Club defeated The Biggins Boys in 7:38 when JP Barnham submitted Brett Biggins with a Golden Scissors.

Rating: 63

And despite their momentum shifts, the VCC get a clean win over one of the hotter teams in the company. If ever they were announcing themselves as threats to the titles, this was it.

ANGLE: The Masked Mauler is backstage with Whistler.

“So Mauler, last week Honest Frank Jr had some choice words and actions for you. Tell the audience how you felt?”

“IRON CLAW!”

“I’m not sure I know what you mean. Are you saying that Honest Frank Jr is going to ‘get’ the Iron Claw?”

“PILEDRIVER!”

“He’s going to get a piledriver?”

“BIG SWING!?!”

“No come on now, you obviously have the words, why don’t you use them?”

The Masked Mauler launches into an attack and applies the Iron Claw on Whistler, knocking him out. He then storms off, huffing loudly.

Rating: 60

He’s still a heel then.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: The Eagle vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated The Eagle in 7:35 by IRON CLAW!?! The Masked Mauler makes defence number four of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 59

ANGLE: Fro Sure is backstage, with no one. Because Whistler is being carted off.

“Woah man, tough break. Feel better old timer. It’s cool, your buddy Fro don’t need an interviewer. He’ll be his own interviewer.

So Fro, you feeling confident of beating Thom Barrowman?

Great question Fro. I’d have to say yes. How can I not feel confident. Just look at me.

That’s a great answer Fro. And I totally know what you mean. When you look good, you feel good.

Exactly. And when you feel good, you wrestle good.

Damn straight. And when you wrestle good, you win good. And we both know what happens then.

We sure do, when you win good, you get paid good.”

Rating: 81

Well, he’s dynamite on the mic.

SINGLES MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Sal DiMeo

In a decent match, Charlie Corner defeated Sal DiMeo in 7:33 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 57

Nice little win for Charlie, whose been lost a little in the shuffle recently. Perhaps he is too laid back.

ANGLE: Honest Frank Jr is out. He’s furious with how things have been going. And he’s finally figured out whose fault it is (crowd chant IT’S YOUR FAULT). It’s Magnum Kobe’s fault. This all started with him. So tonight, Frank Jr is going to beat that Japanese chump and finally take the mantle of Honest Frank. No Junior necessary.

Rating: 68

SINGLES MATCH: Magnum Kobe vs. Honest Frank Jr.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Magnum Kobe defeated Honest Frank Jr. in 7:49 by pinfall with The Glorious Red.

Rating: 61

Hah. One day we’ll give him a win. But at the moment, the instant gratification of watching him lose every week was too funny.

ANGLE: Angry Gilmore comes down to the ring. He takes a microphone and starts talking to the crowd, before eventually getting interrupted by Bulldozer Brandon Smith. They have a big argument, going back and forth on the microphone, before agreeing to face each other at Summer in the City.

Rating: 84

Perfectly cromulent wrestling entertainment right here.

TEN-MAN TAG TEAM BATTLE: Angry Gilmore, Danny Hagman, Fro Sure & Cross River Conneciton vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith, Davis Wayne Newton, Thom Barrowman & The Fantastic Express

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Angry Gilmore, Danny Hagman, Fro Sure, Prime Time Jack Pryde and Perfect Pepper Pelton drew with Bulldozer Brandon Smith, Davis Wayne Newton, Thom Barrowman, Rafe Sashay and Zippy Deverell in 19:31 following a double disqualification.

Rating: 71

Massive, multi-man match ending in a draw. Yes please. Fantastic match too.

ANGLE: LA Star #1 is left in the ring with Riley McManus. Around them is carnage and Riley can’t run away. LA Star attacks and delivers an almighty beating to the champion as the crowd cheers him on.

Rating: 77

OVERALL RATING: 74

0.28 (213,587 viewers) for that one. And with that, we were all set.

NYCW Summer in the City 2023

Title vs. Mask Match: LA Star #1 vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus ©

Said it was too early last time - this is the moment.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

I think you mentioned Dozer was in decline, but Gilmore is basically bulletproof, and giving Smith the win can give LA Star a great guy to have as his first opponent.

Fro Sure vs. Thom Barrowman

Barrowman IS in time decline, and I think he starts his slide down the card as your new guys build up some real wins.

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

Feels like Hagman has doing all the winning in this feud earlier. DWN has more character, has made sizeable steps while Hagman has been treading water. DWN gets the win.

Vessey Combat Club (Kobe, Barnham & Cavalero) vs. Honest Frank Jr & The Chop Shop

NYCW Summer in the City 2023

Title vs. Mask Match: LA Star #1 vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus ©

The time has come to see if LA Star is truly that.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Gotta go with Angry to get some momentum back.

Fro Sure vs. Thom Barrowman

Feels like I’m going fac heavy here, which I don’t like doing

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

DWN has something going and we need a heel challenger to step up to face the new champ.

Vessey Combat Club (Kobe, Barnham & Cavalero) vs. Honest Frank Jr & The Chop Shop

I’m interested to see where the kid is going, but the winning doesn’t start here

NYCW & COTT World Tag Team: The Fantastic Express vs. Cross River Connection ©

Is it time to split up the CRC? There was a brief hint of it and could their future lie in singles competition? Who will be Shawn Michaels and who is Marty jannetty?

NYCW Tri-State Regional: Charlie Corner vs. The Masked Mauler ©

Charlie doesn’t feel ready but could the Mauler be getting ready to move on up?

The Biggins Boys & Powers of Pain vs. Andrew Harper, Denny King, Spike Sylvain & A Mystery Partner

The Powers haven’t won much but this feels like an easy way to get them a win and rub with the Biggins carrying the load

On a side note you are rally weaving and telling some great stories.

New York City… where we look to smash our attendance record with the best built match in an age…

Weston Square Garden. The premier venue in all of New York City. It wasn’t the biggest capacity, but it was steeped in history. This is where Ross Henry fought one of his two matches at Total Mayhem XXI. I never thought we’d be able to perform here, never mind sell the place out. Yet here we were. The crowd were loud and opinionated and way already chanting for LA Star #1.

After walking the hallowed halls alone before the show, I went into the locker-room. The one which had seen so many New York Dandies hockey teams. The boys were in fairly good spirits. I walked over to Star.

“How you feeling Georgie?” I asked.

“I’m good.”

“You nervous?” I pressed. He looked me straight in the eye.

“Absolutely not.”

I smiled and shook his hand, but he pulled me into a hug and said, “I just wanted to say… thanks. Thanks for always believing in me. Even when Ricky left. I never thought I’d be where I am.”

I ignored the lump in my throat and smiled back at him with a nod, before turning to the rest of the locker room.

“Showtime guys!”

NYCW Summer in the City 2023

Sunday, Week 4, June 2023

Weston Square Garden, New York City, New York

Attendance: 20,789

ANGLE: The Biggins Boys and The Powers of Pain are in the ring. Andrew Harper heads out with Denny King and Spike Sylvain in tow. And he has a microphone.

“You know what, we’re here in Weston Square Garden. And we opening the show. It wasn’t that long ago that we were competing for gold. Former holders of most of the titles. And now what are we? Forgotten? I don’t think so. New York City, you want a show. Well we’re the true New Yorkers, and we’re not along.”

Saturdays by Mitch Murder begins to play… and here comes Brutus Milano, flipping off the crowd as he enters.

Rating: 62

Felt like a heel turn better suited his character and opened new doors for this group of original NYCW talent.

GANG BATTLE MATCH: The Biggins Boys & Powers of Pain vs. Brutus Milano, Denny King, Andrew Harper & Spike Sylvain

In a decent match, The Biggins Boys and The Powers of Pain defeated Denny King, Spike Sylvain, Andrew Harper and Brutus Milano in 9:43 when Brett Biggins pinned Brutus Milano with a B-B-Gun.

Rating: 59

Then again, maybe it was just a rib on the pastrami-sucking idiot. Suck it Brutus.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated Charlie Corner in 9:53 by submission with an Iron Claw after interference from Honest Frank. The Masked Mauler makes defence number five of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 61

So it seems not all is lost with Honest Enterprises. Decent little match to heat up an already nuclear crowd.

NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Fantastic Express vs. Cross River Connection ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, The Fantastic Express defeated Cross River Connection in 9:47 when Rafe Sashay pinned Prime Time Jack Pryde with a Fantastic Flashbang. The Fantastic Express win the COTT World Tag Team. The Fantastic Express win the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 68

First upset of the night, but I think it’s fair to say that the crowd loved both teams. With duelling chants and just generally chanting about how awesome they were. I didn’t disagree.

GANG WARS MATCH: Vessey Combat Club (Magnum Kobe, JP Barnham & Ray Cavalero) vs. Honest Frank Jr. & The Chop Shop

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Honest Frank Jr. and The Chop Shop defeated Vessey Combat Club (Magnum Kobe, JP Barnham and Ray Cavalero) in 9:37 when Honest Frank Jr pinned JP Barnham after Mortenson had hit a Tree-Feller.

Rating: 69

Finally a bit of revenge for Honest frank Jr, who the crowd inexplicably loved. Their chanting for him was so much, we had to call an audible and switch the VCC heel for the match. The roof of the place nearly exploded when Frank Jr stole the pin from Mortenson.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a good match, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Danny Hagman in 22:27 by submission with a STF after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 65

A fantastic addition to the canon of these two wrestlers seemingly eternal battle. Perhaps a little under what we’d hoped, but both men had lost a match or two in the build-up. Not to mention someone from Pittsburgh against someone from Canada in this arena?

SINGLES MATCH: Fro Sure vs. Thom Barrowman

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Fro Sure defeated Thom Barrowman in 21:41 by pinfall with a Sure Thing.

Rating: 64

Big and clean win fro Fro Sure as he continues to slowly climb the ladder of our roster. Thom Barrowman is a professional and he must realise his time at the top is limited.

SINGLES MATCH: Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated Angry Gilmore in 9:40 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics.

Rating: 67

Bulldozer cheats to win in a decent match. We had to cut it short because of stamina concerns for both men, but they delivered a classic between veterans and crowd respected them both for it.

NYCW EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus

Following their over-the-top intros, both men stood in the ring as special announcer Whistler read the tale of the tape. The lights on the audience were darkened and the ring was illuminated in a spotlight to give the match a classic, big match feel. Whistler continued to explain that there are no DQs, no count-outs and Fern Hathaway, Thom Barrowman and Bulldozer Brandon Smith are barred from ringside. The crowd boo’d that specification. When the opening bell sounded, the Garden exploded with sound. They were almost entirely with LA Star #1, but the kid looked completely in control. Being a title match, the time limit was set at sixty minutes instead of the usual thirty minutes and for over half an hour, the two men exchanged chain-wrestling moves, high flying moves, vicious brawling shots and incredible Japanese stiff strikes. As the match reached a crescendo, with the crowd calling for a finish, LA Star climbed the ropes and delivered the highest top rope Double Stomp of his career. Crushing McManus chest. He hooked the legs for a 1, 2… and unbelievably, the Georgia Bulldog kicked out. Rallying quickly, Riley delivered a Slingshot suplex, but to the crowd’s joy, LA Star kicked out of that. On jelly legs, the two men stood toe and toe and beat each other’s faces with punches leading to crowd cheering and booing in time. LA Star feeds of the energy of the crowd and delivers an almighty clothesline to knock McManus silly. Slowly he climbs to the top tope and points out to the crowd and then up to the sky… and doesn’t notice the person in a hooded leather jacket sliding into the ring. The figure runs up the ropes, hooks Star’s arm and hits a crashing top rope jackhammer. The figure then wakes up McManus, who gets to his feet and hits one last Slingshot Suplex and hooks Star’s legs for the 1… 2… 3.

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Riley McManus defeated LA Star #1 in 34:25 by pinfall with a Slingshot Suplex. Riley McManus makes defence number nine of the NYCW Empire Heavyweight.

Rating: 71

ANGLE: With the crowd ready to riot, Riley grabs a microphone as Fern runs down to ringside to join them.

“You thought he was going to win didn’t you? Be honest. I screwed him, like I screwed you all. And I couldn’t have done it without my friend. My shooter on the grassy knoll. Ladies and gentlemen of New York City, join me in welcoming Trent ‘The Talent’ Shaffer.”

Riley, Trent and Fern then pick-up the limp LA Star and begin hitting vicious shots with a chair into his head. The crowd pelting the ring with garbage the whole while. Then, making sure to seat LA Star facing the camera, Riley McManus undoes the strings at the back of his mask and pulls it off, revealing a mop of longish brown hair and a completely bloodied face. Riley grabs the mic one last time.

“Get this piece of trash out of my ring. This is New York City Wrestling, and it belongs, to The Georgia Bulldog.”

New York City… where we have another month of admin to work through…

I received a lot of hate online for the finish of that match. But everyone backstage agreed it was the only choice we realistically had. 474,083 viewers had still tuned in and we turned a whopping $197,229 profit, which we immediately funneled into upgrading our Live Experience to Professional. The locker room was buzzing after the show and after Riley and LA Star had shaken hands, I left the boys to say what they needed to say to each other. I handed the book to Larry and hopped on a plane to Texas. I had meetings to deal with and I knew I could trust Larry to book in my absence.

[*]OVERALL RATING: 68 - 0.29 (221,692 viewers)

Having negotiated everything I needed to in Texas, I looked over the notes from the month from Larry. They were surprisingly comprehensive:

American Flash, California Love Machine & Masked Cougar win the COTT World Six Man

Matthew Keith joined CWA

Angry Gilmore has taken Bowden Snoop under his wing

Bulldozer says “Brutus Milano doesn’t connect with the fan, you should probably write him off.”

Aaron Knight won his fifth CWA World Title.

Magnum Kobe has bonded with Whitehorse Whittaker on social media

Americana Jr won the COTT United States title

Ade Nelson & Josh Jacobs won the Sam Keith Classic XIII

Rich Money won his fifth USPW World title

For my part, I had been with OnDem representatives and the suits from East Coast Today. I had successfully extended our deals with both for events and the TV show. So it was another successful month as I took back control in time for our end of month event.

NYCW Rumble in the Bronx 2023

NYCW Empire Title: Trent 'The Talent' Shaffer vs. 'The Georgia Bulldog' Riley McManus

So Riley brings in a guy for a "price" and then it turns into a title match. Who is the heel here? Shaffer has a manager and attacked LA Star or is it just Georgie now? McManus has been a heel for several years. Why do I see a 3-way match coming up next after Georgie hits the ring and causes either a DQ or losses someone the match. I just don't know which way to go. No title change though either way.

NYCW & COTT World Tag Team Titles: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©

Should be a great match but I think the Fantastic's who just won them back retain.

NYCW Tri-State Title: Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Honest Frank Jr vs. The Masked Mauler ©

Frank Jr has been acting like a heel or just a jerk. The Mauler has been rolling but there is history there. Could one of the others come in and surprise steal the title? Prime Time just became a single so I don't think it is him walking out with it. Charlie Corner is an up and comer and the Tri-State title is made for someone like that. But Mauler vs Jr could be a feud to build off of. So Mauler retains

Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman

Barrowman is now putting over the future stars, so he will likely do that here too.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

The Bulldozer has won the majority of the matches involving these two, and I think Gilmore should win this one.

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

DWN is just too much money

Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton

Triple P turning heel or just an strange babyface match? Fro Sure has the momentum so I'll go with him

Vessey Combat Club vs. Samoan Wrecking Crew

The Combat Club was hot for awhile and have lost some stream. Normally I would take the Samoan's but these 2 haven't been exactly Afa and Sika

NYCW Rumble in the Bronx 2023

NYCW Empire Title: Trent 'The Talent' Shaffer vs. 'The Georgia Bulldog' Riley McManus

Heel vs Heel is a bold main event (Shaffer has to be a heel, right?). I call some good old classic NYCW shenanigans, with the maskless LA Star just wrecking both guys.

NYCW & COTT World Tag Team Titles: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©

Biggins are great to give credibility to the Fantastics

NYCW Tri-State Title: Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Honest Frank Jr vs. The Masked Mauler ©

Great way to get the title off of Mauler and move him up the card, without pinning him. For a match as full of shenanigans as this one, I see Frank stealing it somehow.

Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman

Barrowman slides down the card and gives rubs to the future of NYCW.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Dozer just stole a win against Gilmore, no way he wins twice.

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

Crapshoot, can go either way but I'll lean to DWN over 50/50. With Riley losing soon, Dozer/Barrowman in critical decline, you need some heels at the top who are credible.

Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton

Vessey Combat Club vs. Samoan Wrecking Crew

New York City… where we replace the irreplaceable babyface, with a brand new heel…

Shaffer had already made a name for himself backstage. Telling stories and arranging poker tournaments. He was in many ways the perfect replacement for LA Star #1. His manager Billy ‘The Brain’ Keelan, was a steal from SWF. He happily paid over the odds for him because his mic work and charisma, even in his mid-20s was absolutely incredible. Not to mention he was a real people person AND had the look of a 1980s scumbag agent, which meant he fit in immediately.

NYCW Rumble in the Bronx 2023

Sunday, Week 4, July 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 25,802

TAG TEAM MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. Samoan Wrecking Crew

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Vessey Combat Club defeated Samoan Wrecking Crew in 7:01 when JP Barnham submitted Loa Afu with a Golden Scissors.

Rating: 46

Nice big event showing for the Samoans here. They lose most of the time, but their talents are improving every week.

SINGLES MATCH: Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Fro Sure defeated Perfect Pepper Pelton in 10:20 by pinfall with a Sure Thing.

Rating: 62

Fro Sure spent weeks warning Pepper that singles is not like tag team, and then he went and beat him clean to back that up. It’s not a feud built on hate or anger, but about learning. Which makes it somewhat unique.

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Powers of Pain vs. Brutus Milano & Andrew Harper

In a decent match, Andrew Harper and Brutus Milano defeated The Powers of Pain in 10:16 when Brutus Milano submitted The Juggernaut with an Italian Backbreaker after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 62

Never write-off Brutus in a big game atmosphere.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a good match, Danny Hagman defeated Davis Wayne Newton in 21:48 by pinfall with a Missing Piece.

Rating: 73

Fantastic match between two men with great chemistry. Likely their last singles battle for the time-being, they go out with the best yet.

NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, The Fantastic Express defeated The Biggins Boys in 10:08 when Zippy Deverell pinned Brett Biggins after using a foreign object. The Fantastic Express make defence number six of the COTT World Tag Team. The Fantastic Express make defence number two of the NYCW Tag Team.

Rating: 72

Another great match as the champs do everything in their heelish power to retain the titles. This could be the first in a string of great matches involves The Fantastics, The Biggins’ and soon the VCC.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Honest Frank Jr vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde, Honest Frank Jr. and Charlie Corner in 10:16 when The Masked Mauler submitted Charlie Corner with an Iron Claw after interference from Honest Frank. The Masked Mauler makes defence number seven of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 61

Cooling the crowd off a bit comes this fatal fourway match, which sees Prime Time come close to winning singles gold. But he ends up being distracted by Honest Frank Jr and Mauler takes the opportunity to grab a win from the claws of defeat.

SINGLES MATCH: Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Angry Gilmore defeated Bulldozer Brandon Smith in 9:53 by pinfall with an Anger Management.

Rating: 63

When in doubt, go back to the well one last time. Angry finally gets a win and we can settle this feud for a bit. We had rough plans for both men shortly.

SINGLES MATCH: Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Magnum Kobe defeated Thom Barrowman in 9:46 by submission with a Magnum Deathlock.

Rating: 61

Another match between two of our top stars and once again, this disappoints slightly. I don’t know what is going on at the top of the card. Was it because of the advanced age of the likes of Barrowman, Gilmore and Smith? Did we need to plan ahead a bit more?

NYCW EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Trent Shaffer vs. ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Trent Shaffer defeated Riley McManus in 25:08 by pinfall with a Heart Burn. Trent Shaffer wins the NYCW Empire Heavyweight.

Rating: 66

First things first, these two definitely have pretty good chemistry together. The fact it was the rare heel vs heel matchup may have dampened things. But the shock nature of the finish and Riley fighting so hard to keep the title, only to lose it to the man hired to help him keep it is… well, it’s delicious irony isn’t it. Matach could’ve been better, but it’s a start.

OVERALL RATING: 66

477,157 viewers and $135,599 profit. But disaster of disasters, we discover that Magnum Kobe has been suffering from chronic back pain, which explains a lot. Apparently his body has been reduced to 33% efficiency. He’s 36 years old and this injury will linger for over a month. Was his body collapsing? Should we be worried?

Any thoughts of Magnum were dispelled when Larry approached after the show to tell me that Rip Chord has passed away.

Next time… feeling burnt-out, Larry and I take a vacation and pass the book to a friend…

Results:

Theheel - 7/8

Herrbear - 5/8

John Lions - 4/8

**OOC Note**

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone interacting with the diary so far. It's been really fun watching to see how people think about the storylines and booking and what makes sense. A lot of the time in fact I look at your reasoning and it's better than my own.

If there is anything I can do to improve the reading experience, please do let me know. I am keen to do better where I can.

Refreshed and back from holiday, I was met with the news that Rafe Sashay thinks Brutus doesn’t connect with fans and we should fire him. You think I haven’t been trying Rafe? The man is Teflon. Ernie had done a decent job of running things in my absence. Although I had been on holiday, I had taken time to attend the funeral of Rip Chord. The man was a legend and I wanted to pay my respects.

NYCW Empire Superstars #27

Friday, Week 3, August 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 5,349

ANGLE: Riley McManus joins us to kick things off and he’s still angry about losing the title to Shaffer. This brings out The Talent and his agent. They’re used to dealing with curtain-jerkers getting annoyed that the top talent get better treatment. They’re sympathetic. It’s not easy to stand in the presence of greatness. But at Brooklyn Brawl, McManus will get his rematch. They just hope he saves the money from the fight’s purse so that he doesn’t come back to them later for another payout.

Rating: 81

Shaffer and Keelan were gold on the mic and McManus was improving to keep up. The idea of Shaffer as a true ‘big star’ and McManus as a ‘wannabe’ was a lovely twist. Shaffer becoming the de facto face despite this behaviour was even funnier. These opening tv show angles were dynamite, but there was a problem; Me. I didn’t have the skills to keep up with the action in a convincing way. And that was holding them back from even greater heights. It was not something I’d considered, but we were growing at such a fast rate that it’s not all that surprising.

SINGLES MATCH: Chip Martin vs. Andrew Harper

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Andrew Harper defeated Chip Martin in 5:49 by pinfall with a Spike Slam.

Rating: 64

Harper has been low-key winning a lot of matches and actually finds himself positioned as one of the top stars in the company because of that. We’d have to work on seeing if we could turn that into a breakout at some point.

ANGLE: The Biggins Boys are backstage with Whistler and they’re there to talk about The Fantastic Express. They respect the champs and can’t deny that they’ve had an incredible year. But they’re ready to test their metal against the best NYCW has to offer. So they’re challenging the Fantastic Express to a rematch at Brooklyn Brawl.

Rating: 66

NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Powers of Pain vs. The Fantastic Express ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Powers of Pain defeated The Fantastic Express in 8:08 when Rafe Sashay was counted out while fighting Bart Biggins.

Rating: 67

It seems that the Biggins are using some very Fantastic behaviour to get a response out of the champs.

ANGLE: Fro Sure is backstage with Perfect Pepper Pelton. He hopes the young fella has learnt his lesson. Pepper says he has and he’ll prove it. He wants a rematch at Brooklyn Brawl. Laughing; Fro Sure accepts.

Rating: 79

The odd mentor-protégé relationship they’re working with is pretty good. And Pepper stands to only improve by being in segments with Fro Sure, who is quietly becoming one of our best.

SINGLES MATCH: JP Barnham vs. Phil Anders

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Phil Anders defeated JP Barnham in 8:05 by pinfall with a Hangman's Neckbreaker.

Rating: 52

Sometimes you just want the young rookie to get a win. Anders career has not taken off the way we’d hoped after he sent American Machine into retirement. His aborted moment with the crumbling Honest Enterprises was sub-optimal, but as long as we was getting experience, I hoped he’d be fine.

ANGLE: Danny Hagman is bored of Davis Wayne Newton and his anti-USA rhetoric. If Canada is so great, why doesn’t he just go back there? In fact, Hagman thinks they should settle their score once and for all at Brooklyn Brawl.

Rating: 72

SINGLES MATCH: Angry Gilmore vs. Sal DiMeo

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Angry Gilmore defeated Sal DiMeo in 7:44 by pinfall with an Anger Management.

Rating: 65

Angry Gilmore, whose career has been stuttering a little, gets a nice, clean victory over Sweet Sal. Match was fine, but once again we had issues with stamina. I know technically we’ve always had that problem with the likes of Brutus. But I thought we were moving past that.

ANGLE: Angry Gilmore grabs a microphone after the match and demands a final showdown with Bulldozer Brandon Smith.

Rating: 81

Simple and effective story-telling from two veterans who look like they truly hate each other. They don’t obviously. They actually get on well. But with both of their careers on the back nine (Bulldozer because of his body rather than his age), it’s nice to give them a proper feud against fellow veterans to sink their teeth into.

NYCW EMPIRE TITLE MATCH: Magnum Kobe vs. Trent Shaffer ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Trent Shaffer defeated Magnum Kobe in 21:50 by pinfall with a Heart Burn. Trent Shaffer makes defence number one of the NYCW Empire Heavyweight.

Rating: 70

Great match and clean win for Shaffer against one of our best. In case you were wondering, Magnum put on this match with his body falling apart. So that tells us everything we need to know about his talent levels.

OVERALL RATING: 73

0.31 (232,817 viewers) as we’ve ironed out some of the small issues and are once again on the rise. Underpinned by the awesome debut of Shaffer. With one show to go before Brooklyn Brawl, we heard the sad news that Jeremy Stone, of the legendary Stone Family, had passed away at the far-to-young age of 57. We sent our condolences to the rest of the family. In related alliance news; Lucy Stone-McFly won the COTT World Women’s Title. The decision was made in part because she’s a fantastic worker, but also to honour her extended family. It was a nice touch.

NYCW Empire Superstars #28

Friday, Week 4, August 2023

The Empire Ballroom, New York City, New York

Attendance: 5,396

ANGLE: Fro Sure dances to the ring to his own music. Once out there he invites Perfect Pepper Pelton to join him.

“Now listen kid. We’ve got a match this Sunday and there’s some things I want you to know before we get into it for a second time…”

“No need Frozone,” Pepper interrupts. “Thanks for your help, but I think I got it. You can’t trust anyone, look out for yourself and do whatever it takes right?”

“Heh, you’re weird. But yeah, that’s broadly it.”

“Cool man, I look forward to the match.”

Pepper offers his hand and Fro Sure shakes it. Only Pepper doesn’t let go. When Fro Sure realises, Pepper smiles and then delivers a slap to the face and a low blow. Smiling, Pepper leaves Fro Sure in the ring and waves to the crowd as he heads up the ramp.

Rating: 82

The learner becomes the master?

SINGLES MATCH: Jay Silver vs. Phil Anders

In a bout that had little heat and embarrassing wrestling, Phil Anders defeated Jay Silver in 5:47 by pinfall with a Hangman's Neckbreaker.

Rating: 27

Woof! This was bad. Neither of these guys are ready to be controlling a match just yet and the results were some of the worst we’ve seen since the awful Samoan Wrecking Crew matchup which Larry ran.

ANGLE: Honest Frank Jr is backstage with Whsitler. He’s sick and tired of being disrespected. Don’t these people know who he is? He’s wrestling royalty. Whistler points out that he left his dad’s stable. Frank Jr points out that his own dad disrespected him. It was like the time we didn’t get the BMX bike he wanted as a kid. His dad had to learn then, and he has to learn now. But he’s not here to talk about his dad. He just wants to let Prime Time know that he’s found a tag team to support him in his battle. The Chop Shop enter and Honest Frank Jr hands a wad of cash to Sweet Sal, who smiles.

Rating: 82

Absolutely incredible mic and character work as Honest Frank Jr is fast becoming the most obnoxious heel on the entire roster.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Vessey Combat Club vs. Wiuff & Spratt

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Vessey Combat Club defeated Jean-Pierre Wiuff and Darren Spratt in 8:30 when JP Barnham submitted Jean-Pierre Wiuff with a Golden Scissors.

Rating: 49

Solid win for VCC here and they helped elevate their rookie opponents in the process. The perfect mini-match.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: Captain Canada vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated Captain Canada in 5:31 by pinfall with a Piledriver. The Masked Mauler makes defence number eight of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 60

And following on from the last match, Mauler delivers a solid beating to a fellow masked performer in a really, really good match-up.

ANGLE: Danny Hagman is with Whistler and he’s so sick of talking about Davis Wayne Newton, that he’d prefer to talk about the upcoming NFL season with Whistler. He’s confident that the Steelers will beat the Jets on opening day. Whistler is less sure and they have a nice little moment before DWN attacks them both from behind. “Blue Jays for life! Because they, like me, are from the mecca of all sports; Toronto, Ontario, Canada!”

Rating: 74

Just got to get that catchphrase into every promo. What a douche. I loved him.

SINGLES MATCH: Bowden Snoop vs. David Wayne Newton

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Bowden Snoop in 7:38 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 54

He follows the backstage attack with a simple victory in the ring. Bowden Snoop had huge upside, but no was not the time for him to start challenging established performers.

ANGLE: Trent Shaffer, with Billy the Brain, cuts a promo hyping up his upcoming match with Riley McManus. He’s not worried in the slightest about losing. In fact it’ll be nice to find someone else to elevate to his level… before dispatching them. He’s here to help he company and the best way to do that, is to make a lot of people famous. And the best way to make them famous is to beat them in the ring. And no-ones better at winning that Trent ‘The Talent’ Shaffer.

Rating: 84

They’re both so good on the mic. The TV show really has given us scope to try out different people in non-wrestling roles and the results have been superb.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Angry Gilmore & The Biggins Boys vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith & The Fantastic Express

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Angry Gilmore and The Biggins Boys defeated Bulldozer Brandon Smith and The Fantastic Express in 21:04 when Angry Gilmore pinned Zippy Deverell with an Anger Management.

Rating: 73

A big win for the faces heading into the weekend event. And what a match. In recent weeks our main events have become some of our best ever matches and this continued that trend. Just great stuff all round.

OVERALL RATING: 74

0.31 (236,237 viewers) for the go-home show, and with that done. We were ready for the big show.

This has been a great read, finally caught up enough to comment. Really enjoying it. I love the presentation, it gets all the info across quick and entertainingly.

Brooklyn Brawl 2023

NYCW Empire: 'The Georgia Bulldog' Riley McManus vs. Trent 'The Talent' Shaffer ©- Trent isn't losing so soon and he has plenty of great matchups ahead.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith- I think Gilmore gets the win to even everything up and set up blowoff match.

Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman- even broken Kobe is one of your best

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton- DWN is one of my go to guys no matter what company I play as. Give him all the gold.

NYCW Tri-State: Billy Chase vs. Charlie Corner vs. The Masked Mauler ©- I think Mauler's reign is almost done but don't think either challenger is there yet.

NYCW & COTT World Tag Team: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©- Let the Express get some more popularity and they're the more entertaining team.

Prime Time Jack Pryde & Vessey Combat Club vs. Honest Frank Jr & The Chop Shop- The heels get the win while the other guys get some experience

Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton- Fro underestimates Triple P and pays the price.

20-Man Battle Royal- I'll go with Davis Wayne Newton.

Honestly nothing major I can think of as feedback to improve things. The only thing would maybe give some highlight to a lot of the new guys/younger guys when they start showing up on TV? It feels like you treat the reader like the TV audience but when Vessey Combat Club/the Samoans/etc start showing up it feels like they have been there forever but for us (the tv audience I guess too) they are making their "debuts."

NYCW Empire: 'The Georgia Bulldog' Riley McManus vs. Trent 'The Talent' Shaffer ©

THIS one will have the shenanigans and the former LA Star making his big return.

Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

I think Gilmore has the most legs left in him still.

Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman

Barrowman's definitely not go the legs anymore, this is a rematch to see if he can still go since his last Kobe match was disappointing.

Danny Hagman vs. Davis Wayne Newton

Still think Newton has more upside right now than Hagman.

NYCW Tri-State: Billy Chase vs. Charlie Corner vs. The Masked Mauler ©

If Mauler didn't lose it last big show, he isn't losing it on this one.

NYCW & COTT World Tag Team: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©

Another great defense for the Fantastics. Biggins are bulletproof and can lose forever and still be credible to challenge at any time.

Prime Time Jack Pryde & Vessey Combat Club vs. Honest Frank Jr & The Chop Shop

I'm a Chop Shop fan.

Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton

Pelton losing here would be pretty sad, unless Fro shows a change of heart and cheats or something.

20-Man Battle Royal - Andrew Harper

He's white hot despite not actively doing anything, so give him a big spot and maybe toss him in a program to see if he can keep it up.

New York City… we’re heading back to the Garden…

NYCW Brooklyn Brawl 2023

Sunday, Week 4, August 2023

Weston Square Garden, New York City, New York

Attendance: 28,405

20-MAN BATTLE ROYAL: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Andrew Harper won a battle royal in 13:11. The other members of the 'final four' were Brutus Milano, Denny King and Spike Sylvain, with Brutus Milano being the final elimination. Brutus Milano got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 58

A battle royal which ends with all the old school NYCW heels together. It’s like being back in 2020 and personally, I loved it. Harper with the big win to reinforce his Bully Enforcer gimmick.

SINGLES MATCH: Fro Sure vs. Perfect Pepper Pelton

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Perfect Pepper Pelton defeated Fro Sure in 9:32 by pinfall with a handful of tights.

Rating: 63

Pepper really has learnt from Fro Sure and this is a big, singles win for the former tag champ. The fact he cheated to win draws a smile from Fro Sure. In fact Fro Sure seemed happy for his opponent, despite losing the match.

GANG WARS MATCH: Prime Time Jack Pryde & Vessey Combat Club vs. Honest Frank Jr & The Chop Shop

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Honest Frank Jr and The Chop Shop defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde and Vessey Combat Club in 10:27 when Honest Frank Jr pinned JP Barnham with a Roll The Dice.

Rating: 66

Keeping the show rolling, we have Frank Jr getting another big win. It seems that when he’s teamed with two bigger boys, he is successful. Prime Time and the VCC can afford the loss here. Because I liked the idea of The Chop Shop as muscle for hire and wanted to run with it.

NYCW & COTT WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Biggins Boys vs. The Fantastic Express ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Biggins Boys defeated The Fantastic Express in 10:30 when Zippy Deverell was disqualified while fighting Bart Biggins.

Rating: 76

OLE! Another incredible match from our tag team ranks. And while The Biggins got the win, the Fantastics keep the titles. This allows us to go to a rubber match if we want to. Alternatively we might want to save that for another time.

NYCW TRI-STATE TITLE MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Billy Chase vs. The Masked Mauler ©

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, The Masked Mauler defeated Charlie Corner and Billy Chase in 9:56 when The Masked Mauler submitted Billy Chase with an Iron Claw. The Masked Mauler makes defence number nine of the NYCW Tri-State Regional.

Rating: 53

Having learnt our lesson of over-using match-ups, we inserted Billy Chase into this title defense. Mauler’s run had been superb for both him and the title prestige, but I wasn’t ready to have him drop the title just yet.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Hagman vs. David Wayne Newton

In a good match, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Danny Hagman in 22:13 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 69

And in the final showdown DWN gets the nod via cheating. We’d now have a nice break in the feud to let both men expand into other things for the time being.

SINGLES MATCH: Magnum Kobe vs. Thom Barrowman

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Thom Barrowman defeated Magnum Kobe in 9:48 by pinfall with a Guided Missile.

Rating: 63

Thom gets a big match win. We could’ve gone either way here, but we were genuinely scared that Magnum might just up and retire due to injury at any second. Once he’d proven he will recover we’ll change things up. But for now; One Man Army marches on.

SINGLES MATCH: Angry Gilmore vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated Angry Gilmore in 9:49 by pinfall with a Tombstone Piledriver.

Rating: 68

And there we have it. Bulldozer finishes the feud with a clean win to propel him back towards the very top of the card. We were slightly overrun with top-level heels.

ANGLE: Trent Shaffer makes an elaborate entrance with Billy Keelan alongside him. Keelan then introduces him to the crowd in an elaborate and overly-long opening match tale of the tape.

Rating: 74

NYCW EMPIRE TITLE MATCH: ‘The Georgia Bulldog’ Riley McManus vs. Trent Shaffer ©

Following the introductions, the two men get to work. Throughout the match, Trent maintains a level of control and offense which firmly establish him as the dominant performer. But what Riley lacks in experience, he more than makes up for in grit. Even with Shaffer hitting a number of big moves, Riley keeps kicking out and slowly, so slowly, he starts to crawl back into the match. The crowd can sense the change an don’t seem happy about it. Trent slowly becomes the de facto face of the match as Riley uses every trick in the book to gain and maintain control. Then, just as it looks like he’s going to regain his title… Cheerleader Nicki returns to NYCW and appears at ringside to start brawling with Fern Hathaway. Having beaten her down to the delight of audience, Nicki gets into the ring and slaps Riley around the face. Distracted, Riley turns around into a Heart Burn and Trent hooks to legs for the win.

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Trent Shaffer defeated Riley McManus in 23:09 by pinfall with a Heart Burn following interference from Cheerleader Nicki. Trent Shaffer makes defence number two of the NYCW Empire Heavyweight.

Rating: 67

ANGLE: Furious about Cheerleader Nicki’s sudden return, Riley stands in the middle of the ring as Trent and Billy sneak into the crowd with the title. The lights in the arena dim and spotlights begin to swirl around the entrance as Sirius by Alan Parsons Project plays. Cheerleader Nicki runs up the ramp and points to the entrance when a man enters…

sd60rk9.jpg

Wearing a long black, leather duster coat and black trousers, with a headband covered in stars he begins to march towards the ring with Nicki alongside him and behind him on the VesseyTron the words spin white against the black: ‘The Star’ George Trapesi. The former LA Star #1 has returned to NYCW. As he marches to the ring, Nicki follows alongside before rushing in to take out Fern Hathaway. Trapesi gets in the ring, looking bigger and more imposing than ever before. McManus, having got his bearings, charges, only to find himself on the receiving end of a chokeslam. Trapesi picks up the dazed McManus so he’s stood in the centre of ring and then points a finger gun at him before delivering a clothesline so powerful that McManus spins in the air before landing. With the crowd going berserk, Trapesi and Nicki pose on the apron as the show ends.

Rating: 84

Now that’s a repackaging.

OVERALL RATING: 67

487,109 viewers tuned in, mainly for the main event and the aftermath. The actual quality of the event was a little underwhelming, but you can’t knock that ending. And that, hopefully is the thing that people remember.

Having made an incredible $163,865 profit, it was time to look into upgrading production values to majestic. If we’re really going for it, then I want us to look every bit as good as USPW, TCW and SWF.

Next time… LA Star #1 has returned…

Results:

KyTeran – 6/9

John Lions – 6/9

Neslo024 – 5/9

New York City… where masks ultimately hold you back from your most bad ass self…

The buzz around George Trapesi’s return was red hot and we wanted to push ahead with some new feuds and blowout some older ones before October’s King of New York tournament. I had considered increasing the size of the tournament this year, but we still had a month to get through first. Wanting to get stuck into the production side a bit more, there were some key moments to focus on, but otherwise I’d approach the note-taking in a steam-lined fashion.

Revenge is a dish best served piping hot, as Trapesi begins dismantling the people protecting The Georgia Bulldog. In other, potentially more important news; Mitch Naess and Emma Chase have pretty good chemistry, which is just wonderful stuff. Jean-Pierre Wiuff had his nose broken during their last match too, but shrugged it off like a boss. Tough kid.
