The League, Redux: Seasons 8 and Beyond Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Nuclear's friends are very happy with how the season has played out, with many of their legitimate sports bets paying out very handsomely.  And also Nuclear won The League at just te ninth time of asking! Nuclear promises to reign as champion as a tyrant would, with an iron grip and absolutely no mercy for anyone who even tries to challenge him next season.  If anyone wants to get some words with Nuclear, he can be found somewhere behind closed doors where you aren't invited, and if you try to get in there's a good chance you will sent for a scuba holiday where you can check out all of your favourite fishes.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON NINE FINALE

DELTA DIVISION

 V1I70uc.jpg (8) Jimmy Anarchy (2-11, OVR 438)

vs.

(5) Kichi Hida (6-7, OVR 429)* 4ZAKk1I.jpg

Jimmy Anarchy might be on his way out of the Delta Division, but he leaves after putting together the fastest match in modern League history.  Hida never got out of the starting blocks before Anarchy hit the Final Step and ended his disastrous season with a third win. For Hida, who started this season in a high note, now she has time to figure out where things went terribly awry and fix them for her second campaign.

Jimmy Anarchy (3-11) def. Kichi Hida (6-8) via Pinfall (Final Step) in 4:21.  Rating: *

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 2.57, XP + 441.91, no notable damage

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR -0.78, XP + 110.48, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

 LTFF6jR.jpg (z-8) El Tornado (1-12, OVR 430)

vs.

(6) Diamond (5-8, OVR 455)* 0rDaDU8.jpg

After seeing the match before hers. Diamond seemed to come out with a chip on her shoulder. Tornado never stood a chance as Diamond comes just 15 seconds from matching the record set by Anarchy just moments ago, ending her season on a high note.

Diamond (6-8) def. El Tornado (1-13) via Pinfall (24 Karat Kiss) in 4:36.  Rating: *

Changes for Diamond:  OVR + 2.58, XP + 508.33, no notable damage

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR -0.79, XP + 127.08, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

2X2r9qf.jpg (5) Indigo Rose (5-8, OVR 444)

vs.

(7) Jun Onoo (4-9, OVR 452)* zTBxNBX.jpg

With Diamond’s win, this match would determine who dropped into Delta next season. At least this match, the first of which had actual stakes behind it, was more entertaining than the prior two…and longer than those two put together.  Onoo busted Rose open early, but never tried to take advantage of the laceration as he opened a bit of a lead. Rose fought back, but not before Onoo nearly hit an IMPACT Driver. That served as the wake-up call for Rose, who landed a Blood from a Rose and then the Vite d’Indaco in quick succession. Onoo was about half a foot from the ropes when Rose wrenched upwards hard enough that Onoo had to tap for fear of something in his neck snapping. Rose wins a hard-fought match that honestly should have gone over better, and lives to wrestle in Gamma for another season!

Indigo Rose (6-8) def. Jun Onoo (4-10) via Submission (Vite d’Indaco) in 14:53.  Rating: **

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 4.24, XP + 560.22, minor damage to head

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR -0.07, XP + 140.05, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

 8CXZgHS.jpg (6) Lord Robert Abernathy (4-9, OVR 415)

vs.

(3) Monty Dhillon (9-4, OVR 481)* vz0qqDp.jpg

Dhillon still had something to fight for, with a win forcing the pressure on Christian Priest later on.  After a memorable spot in which a Hammer Mill was countered by the British Uppercuts, Dhillon knuckled down and managed to goad Abernathy into attempting a low blow that the nobleman telegraphed too much. Dhillon pounced on the opening with an Empire Bomb and that was all she wrote.  Dhillon gets his tenth win of the season, and now finds his fate lies in the slender hands of one Devil’s Delight.

Monty Dhillon (10-4) def. Lord Robert Abernathy (4-10) via Pinfall (Empire Bomb) in 8:30.  Rating: **

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 3.88, XP + 484.08, minor damage to head

Changes for Lord Robert Abernathy:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.02, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

 VfA2MW8.jpg (z-8) Pulsar (2-11, OVR 443)*

vs.

(3) George Mastachas (8-5, OVR 471) hlph25Q.jpg

What appeared to be a throwaway match in the Alpha Division coming in to the night turned out to be the first true Match of the Night contender. Rather close throughout, Pulsar managed to keep a step ahead of Mastachas for the majority of the contest. Mastachas managed a couple strings of good offense, but only had one shot at the Wrath of Zeus that Pulsar slipped out from. Pulsar finally went up top for his shooting star senton instead of a missile dropkick, and only needed one attempt to land it. Pulsar saves one of his best for last, as he stuns Mastachas as his final act in the Alpha Division for season nine!

Pulsar (3-11) def. George Mastachas (8-6) via Pinfall (Zodiac Implosion) in 16:15.  Rating: ***

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 5.59, XP + 792.68, minor damage to head and body

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 198.17, moderate damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

p54rf5F.jpg (4) De'siree Mitchell (7-6, OVR 461)*

vs.

(z-7) Big Scott Weathers (3-10, OVR 458) OOiJTFx.jpg

A second contender for Match of the Night came right on the heels of the first one, and this one was even closer than the previous match was. Weathers was the one who went for his big move first, only to find that Mitchell had Blackout well-scouted. She ate another spinning back fist, and almost got caught by a spear from Weathers, but trying to spear the former nose tackle was the proverbial waving the flag at a bull. Not even a minute later, Mitchell landed the All Out Blitz and Weathers simply did not have enough in him to kick out. Mitchell at least ends the season on a win, though many of her fans will be left wondering what might have been.

De'siree Mitchell (8-6) def. Big Scott Weathers (3-11) via Pinfall (All Out Blitz) in 16:25.  Rating: ***

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 5.60, XP + 792.81, moderate damage to head

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 198.20, moderate damage to head

BETA DIVISION

N0Y594C.jpg (7) Markus Clay (4-9, OVR 450)

vs.

(3) Jean-Paul Ouilette (8-5, OVR 476)* ZThYhej.jpgAAdEYyr.jpg

An absolute must-win for Markus Clay if he wants to have a shot of remaining in Beta next season. Clay kept the pace quick for the opening minutes, but didn’t fight defensively enough to prevent Ouilette from landing some decent offensive strings against him. This would come back to haunt him eleven minutes in, as a springboard legdrop was left wanting, and Ouilette followed this with a spinning elbow blow. Clay couldn’t kick out, and that sealed his fate as he will drop into the lower half of The League next season as a member of the Gamma Division.

Jean-Paul Ouilette (9-5) def. Markus Clay (4-10) via Pinfall (spinning elbow blow) in 11:27.  Rating: **

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 4.05, XP + 631.14, minor damage to head

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.79, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

xJrKs53.jpg54miFm6.jpg (7) Devil's Delight (4-9, OVR 415)

vs.

(2) Christian Priest (10-3, OVR 510)* YICOeYe.jpgMZ2VDcB.jpg

Priest controlled his destiny here. A win, and he promotes to Gamma. A loss, and he remains in Delta for another season as Monty Dhillon would advance on tiebreakers. Priest controlled the opening and middle parts, hitting his version of Iconoclasm on three separate occasions. But Delight kept fighting, scoring a solid strike with Hellborne Rising about seven minutes in. Her follow-up got stopped by a right hand and a double underhook powerbomb, before Priest applied Martyrdom. Delight could not fight out of it, and tapped a few seconds later. By virtue of the win, Christian Priest earns promotion to the Gamma Division!

Christian Priest (11-3) def. Devil's Delight (4-10) via Submission (Martrydom) in 8:13.  Rating: **

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 3.87, XP + 483.94, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR -0.07, XP + 120.99, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

wtKjCIc.jpg (y-1) Lucas Molina (11-2, OVR 443)*

vs.

(4) Sterling Silver (6-7, OVR 464) va4qjuU.jpg

Another Match of the Night contender, the most memorable spot in this match was Molina catching a leg from Silver as she went for a missile dropkick and turned it into a single leg grapevine. He’d follow that with a Puerto Rican Legsweep but his attempt at the Molina Bodylock went for naught. Silver would not give him another chance, as a sudden springboard guillotina would be enough to keep the Delta Division champion down for three. Silver at least manages to even her record for the season, and ends on a high note.

Sterling Silver (7-7) def. Lucas Molina (11-3) via Pinfall (springboard guillotina) in 10:39.  Rating: ***

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 5.18, XP + 525.54, minor damage to head

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 0.72, XP + 131.38, no notable damage

BETA DIVISION

ginc2gw.jpg (z-8) Terrance Stevens (3-10, OVR 448)

vs.

(2) Daniel Simmons (9-4, OVR 483)* ha8RmaF.jpg

With Ouilette winning earlier, Simmons needed a win to ensure promotion to the Alpha Division. In his way was a relegation-bound opponent who had nothing to lose. Stevens made Simmons work for it though, avoiding the ankle lock submission on at least a half dozen occasions. A spinning elbow netted a short two for Stevens, but that would be his last gasp of offense. Simmons took control and barely a minute later he finally locked in Quitting Time, and Stevens had to tap. The win ensures Daniel Simmons a spot in the top flight next season!

Daniel Simmons (10-4) def. Terrance Stevens (3-11) via Submission (Quitting Time) in 15:12.  Rating: ***

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 5.51, XP + 686.28, minor damage to head

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 171.57, minor damage to head and body

BETA DIVISION

IgD64Oj.jpg (x-1) Reverend Johnny Gross (10-3, OVR 475)*

vs.

(6) Angela Wassermann (4-9, OVR 445) ZCYwviV.jpg

With Simmons securing promotion, now Gross had to win to earn the Beta Division championship to cap off his return to the Alpha Division. Wassermann, no longer in danger of relegation, seemed to phone it in as Gross had a finisher applied inside of nine minutes, with the submission coming about twenty seconds later. Wassermann does not put up much of a fight as Gross wins the Beta Division championship.

Reverend Johnny Gross (11-3) def. Angela Wassermann (4-10) via Submission (Come to Jesus) in 9:27.  Rating: **

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 3.94, XP + 629.90, no notable damage

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.47, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg (4) Erick Gibson (7-6, OVR 459)

vs.

(3) Diego Rodriguez (9-4, OVR 473)* 9wxABJw.jpg

A competitive matchup, this one suffered from the referee’s inability to see Gibson go low on Rodriguez on three different occasions in the contest.  After the third one, Gibson nailed a Terminable Offense to score the pin, in rather controversial fashion, to solidify his final standing for the season. Rodriguez falls short of a double-digit win total for the season, but still have to feel like he’s one of the favorites to promote to Beta next season.

Erick Gibson (8-6) def. Diego Rodriguez (9-5) via Pinfall (Terminable Offense) in 12:50.  Rating: **

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 4.13, XP + 559.08, minor damage to head

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.77, moderate damage to head

BETA DIVISION

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpg (5) Blood River (6-7, OVR 478)*

vs.

(4) Billy Norris (8-5, OVR 472) ayWv1C3.jpg

A somewhat competitive, if underwhelming bout, these two kept to the skies for the majority of the second half of the contest. It would be Norris who would start to hit harder faster, and that would prove to be the difference in this one as River simply couldn’t find enough offense to counter Norris. A springboard senton put an end to the proceedings here.

Billy Norris (9-5) def. Blood River (6-8) via Pinfall (springboard senton bomb) in 12:17.  Rating: **

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 4.10, XP + 631.66, no notable damage

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.92, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (2) Brandy McDonald (9-4, OVR 488)*

vs.

(6) The Mastodon (6-7, OVR 468) iLs7NYn.jpg

In what would be the second-best match of the night (by a margin of 18 seconds!), it would take McDonald close to ten minutes to shake off the doldrums of not emerging from the locker room as League Champion for the first time since week thirteen last season. Once she started going, though, Mastodon had to fight defensively for a while and even at one point escaped Brandy’s submission finisher. (Gameplay note: She had a 990 to finish; Mastodon rolled a natural 1000. Can’t be more definitive than that!)  Out of instinct, she’d hit Brandy with a Twist, and that would be her undoing, as Mastodon had an adrenaline rush and in short order leveled the now-former champion with a Rampage to even his record on the season.

The Mastodon (7-7) def. Brandy McDonald (9-5) via Pinfall (Rampage) in 17:18.  Rating: ***

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 5.67, XP + 793.49, minor damage to head

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 198.37, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

e8cytyP.jpg (5) Mel O'Hallister (7-6, OVR 485)*

vs.

(y-1) Nuclear Templeton (10-3, OVR 485) FqeSGy6.jpg

So…WS3 crashed on me as I went to get the play by play for this actual Match of the Night. No idea why it crashed but I choose to blame Nuclear’s…”Friends”…for the issue. So instead of the full PBP I’m afraid a summary will have to suffice.

Nuclear was greeted by more jeers than usual as he walked to the ring with the League Championship slung over a shoulder. The opening minutes were even, with Nuclear getting a slight advantage. O’Hallister would not stay down after three Power Surges, though, and Nuclear went to press the offensive with a Radiation Spike. O’Hallister averted disaster, though, and fought back to even footing with the League Champion. A single arm DDT gave O’Hallister the best opening he’d had all match, and he quickly got Nuclear in position for his reverse DDT. Nuclear fought free, but a body punch got countered into a drop toe hold and then an Irish Clover. An implant DDT stunned Nuclear, and O’Hallister wasted little time in setting up for, and this time connecting with, a Dream of the Emerald Isle. The three-count followed this, and O’Hallister ends his first season in the Alpha Division by giving notice to the new League Champion that he’s not as easy a mark as might have been believed!

Mel O'Hallister (8-6) def. Nuclear Templeton (10-4) via Pinfall (Dream of the Emerald Isle) in 17:35.  Rating: ***

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 5.69, XP + 943.72, minor damage to head

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 0.79, XP + 348.43, moderate damage to head

This was the Match of the Night (3 [3 this season] for Mel O'Hallister, 2 [1 this season] for Nuclear Templeton)

GAMMA DIVISION

RdUenQh.jpg (x-1) Brian Blackfield (11-2, OVR 516)*

vs.

(x-2) Yoshii Nakamatsu (10-3, OVR 479) giFlbJV.jpg

Main event time, to determine a Gamma Division champion. Both men had already secured promotion, this was more for the bragging rights involved. Nakamatsu didn’t seem to get the memo, though, as he barely managed enough offense to avoid a squash. Blackfield was never in danger, and clinches his second straight division title to put the Beta Division on notice that he’s intending to do the same thing next season!

Brian Blackfield (12-2) def. Yoshii Nakamatsu (10-4) via Submission (Highland’s Wrath) in 9:17.  Rating: *

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 2.77, XP + 510.70, no notable damage

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR -0.84, XP + 127.67, minor damage to head

THE LEAGUE NOW ENTERS THE OFFSEASON BREAK. SEASON TEN HAS A TENTATIVE STARTING PERIOD IN MID-JULY 2023 TO ALLOW TIME FOR ME TO, IF I MAY BE QUITE FRANK, GORGE ON FINAL FANTASY XVI FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS WHEN IT RELEASES AND ALSO FINISH OMEGA DIVISION STUFF ON MY OWN TIME BEFORE THAT.

The League Records post will be updated later on this week--after all, new marks for fastest matches were set to start the show so they have to be put on the list.

Okay, so I lied. I had enough motivation to get the Best Of post updated on page one. It has now been updated to reflect Season Nine happenings.

Also, it's only fitting that the only regular season match in modern League history to get a 5* Match of the Year rating be called out in a separate post for winning the Match of the Season.  As if there was any doubt after that rating came in.

Christian Priest vs. Sterling Silver, in a European Rules match in Week Eight, runs away with the Match of the Season award.  Both characters earn a 200 XP bonus for this, and Priest's totals on the character information page have been updated to show this fact.

All right, now I'm done speaking and the offseason truly begins, lol.

Gave, he says. I was under the distinct impression that I took those wins. 😛

As for Yoshii...c'mon let the two Japanese League members work together. If it was Blackfield you can friggin' have him back. *mutters and grumbles in annoyance* Anyway, looking forward to Molina and Priest dominating Gamma too. And Blackfield dominating Beta. And and the high likelihood that Dhillon and Hida are the top contenders to promote out of Delta next time. And and and the wild season that Alpha's gonna have. Beta's best two slide into a division where the worst not relegated went 7-7. Combined with the good Reverend seeking redemption for his previous relegation? Gonna be a good season over in Alpha, whew.

This. Is. DATAAAAAA. Specifically, week by week win loss tracking and individual schedules. Observe! This post is for Alpha Division. I'm working on Beta next, followed by Gamma and Delta. This is fun for me.

Alpha Division Commentary

Big Scott Weathers lost every match in the second half. His relegation is well deserved. 3-4 followed by 0-7 gets you the boot, Scotty.

Brandy McDonald had a good season, but not quite a championship caliber one. If she got a second win against anyone else in the division but Big Scott Weathers and Pulsar and she'd probably still be champ. 5-2 was a fine start, but a 4-3 wasn't gonna cut it against the hard charging Nuclear Templeton.

De'siree Mitchell, ultimately, was a bit of a fraud as a championship contender. She ripped off six wins to get into contention, but two of those were against Pulsar and one was against Big Scott Weathers. The Mastodon and Nuclear Templeton both swept her, which doomed her. If this didn't happen, the championship chase looks very different.

George Mastachas somehow managed to get swept by Pulsar. That four match losing streak in the second half hurt him, too, but that was his fellow championship contenders and the Rampage of Mel O'Hallister. Seriously, if he'd swept Pulsar like he should have, he'd be tied with Nuke at 10-4 and tiebreakers would be deciding the title. Damn shame. For him.

Calling it now, The Mastodon is getting relegated next season. 3 of his 7 wins are against wrestlers who are got relegated. Nuke and Mastachas swept him, and the two replacing the relegated both have submssion finishers, negating one of his biggest advantages. Brandy was a hairsbreadth away from sweeping him, too. He's done.

Mel O'Hallister was Alpha's perseverance story this season. 3 straight losses? No problem, he'll go get 3 straight wins. 3 straight losses again and staring relegation in the face? Activate Rampage Mode and not lose again all season. Season 10 will be interesting for him. I think he'll contend for the title. Why, you ask? He swept Nuke and showed he could beat the top contenders (except for De'siree).

What can be said about Nuclear Templeton? He did what a champion is supposed to do. Started out 4-3, ended 6-1. He beat who he needed to beat. Swept who he needed to sweep. And got the belt. He's got his work cut out for him as far as repeating goes. Johnny Gross looked unstoppable at times down in Beta. Daniel Simmons also looked great. He has to find a way to beat Brandy again, and Mel at all. It's gonna be interesting.

Pulsar's season was a bag of ugh. Jobbed out mercilessly by everyone. Except somehow he proved to be Mastachas's kyrptonite by sweeping him. Weird as hell. But yeah his relegation is deserved. Everyone else but Scott Weathers swept him. Goodbye, get ready to continue jobbing, this time to Blackfield, Yoshi, and Billy Norris.

I’ll wait for the other division writeups to come, but afterwards, we can compare what we’ve seen in two seasons of The League to the two-plus seasons with these characters I ran elsewhere. It’s not going to be a direct comparison (since elsewhere, I ran an NFL-style schedule with eight divisions of four, and a 16-week schedule), but it amuses me to see some of the changes that have come since when I look at what’s happened here.

EDIT FOR MINOR CONTEXT: under the system done elsewhere, for instance, Pulsar (who got laughed out of the top division this season) went 21-17 in 2+ seasons, including an 11-5 campaign. Brian Blackfield’s first season wasn’t an undefeated one, it was 9-7. And Reverend Gross tied for the best overall record (29-9), but had zero titles due to the playoff system I’d used. The guy who tied him for best record? Won both seasons and was in contention for a third. I specifically chose to keep him out of The League to start just to see if the handicap would stop him!

Beta Division time. For those who are unaware, I added commentary at the end of Alpha's entry. I'll do a separate post for Beta's as the post box is being difficult. So look forward to it.

Beta Division Commentary

Before I get started, I just want to say that the big weird thing for me in Beta was three out of four division leaders (Gross, Simmons, & Ouilette) had an ugly loss to one of what I'm calling the Jobber Trio (Wasserman, Clay, & Stevens), while Billy Norris (the other division leader) swept all three. Weird stuff. Moving on.

Angela Wasserman was, as I just said, one of the Jobber Trio. But probably the best of the three, dubious honor that it is. She was just good enough not to get relegated. Barely. And you know, I think she'll survive Season 10, too. Pulsar and Big Scott Weathers are just as jobbery, and she's perhaps a step better when it counts. What she is not, however, is any threat to promote. God, no.

Billy Norris is Beta's symbol of perseverance. Just couldn't get it together in the early running, then ripped off four wins to get into contention. I'll maintain, however, that's a bit fraudulent, as three were finishing his sweeps of the Jobber Trio. But, with Gross and Simmons promoted, he has an opportunity. Whether Blackfield and Yoshi will let him use it is another matter. Press X to Doubt, says EP. He'll be a threat, I think, but again fall just short. Unless he pulls out some new tricks.

Blood River is an enigma. He's not a promotion threat, but he's not a jobber, either. He's has surprising wins and ugly losses. I don't get it. He showed perseverance too after that 2-5 start, but eh. He's a mystery. He'll probably stay at mid table, barring some new tricks.

Daniel Simmons was one ugly loss away from being the division champion. He's still promoted, but that loss to Wasserman has to sting. Otherwise he did what champions are supposed to do. He beat who he's supposed to beat. He looked almost invincible in the first half, going 6-1. He came back to Earth in the second, but that hot first half kept him in and got him promoted. Next challenge: Alpha Division.

Jean-Paul Ouilette has to be kicking himself. He fell just short. He did almost everything right. Except getting swept by Gross and that ugly loss to Stevens, he could have promoted. Well, he's still here. And now has to deal with Brian f'n Blackfield and Yoshi Nakamatsu. Super. Like Billy Norris, he's got a shot. But I doubt it.

Markus Clay is the second member of the Jobber Trio, and his relegation is most deserved. He didn't start awfully, going 3-4. However, he finished the season with six straight losses. One win in that stretch would have saved him, but he couldn't do it. Take thy self to Gamma, loser. Job to Molina, Priest, and Rodriguez.

Does Reverend Johnny Gross have an ugly loss on his resume this season? Yes, to Clay above. But short of that he was dominant. Everybody got choked out and sent to see the Lord. 11-3 is a fine job. He returns to Alpha. The question is, will this be his revenge tour or is he still out of his depth up there? I'm betting he's not.

I don't even want to talk about Terrence Stevens. He's the last of the Jobber Trio. He lost 11 times. He didn't win until Week 7. Go away, loser. Job to Molina, Priest, and Rodriguez. Get sent to Delta after. Bye.

Gamma Division Commentary

What is there to say about Brian Blackfield that hasn't already been said in the recaps? He had a monstrously dominant season, beat everybody at least once and most twice. Only a fluke loss to Gibson mars a nearly flawless campaign. Being submitted by Rodriguez is something nobody ought to be ashamed of. And the odds are pretty decent that he's about to do it all over again in Beta. The two people who would give him the hardest time promoted out of the division. So Beta is his for the taking, and I don't think anybody can stop him.

Diamond (and her handler) have to be frustrated with the way this season went. She just couldn't find any consistency, and actually had to fight off relegation a bit. the First Lady of The League has to be wondering how it all went so wrong. She started 3-1, after all. I'd point directly to the 4 match loss streak right after this, featuring two losses to Indigo Rose. Someone she ought to be able to beat, normally. She's still mid table for Season 10, and if she can pull it together, can easily contend for a promotion spot. Time will tell.

Diego Rodriguez is probably Blackfield's most prominent hater. Yes, more than Yoshi. Because someone weaker than Blackfield would have opened the way for Diego to  promote. A 9-5 season is nothing to be ashamed of. He was, frustratingly, just a bit short. One less ugly loss to a a lesser division light (like Indigo Rose, or Gibson), or if he'd managed to take one for Yoshii he'd have been right in the convo for the second spot. Still, this season Blackfield and Yoshi are gone. Who knows how well Molina and Priest will measure up to them. Maybe this time, he can do it.

It's weird. Erick Gibson feels like a fraud. He's got the wins over big names and small. But 8-6 just feels wrong. Like he lucked out by Diamond having a down season even though she still swept him. I dunno, man. it just feels like he should be 6-8 instead. I can't explain it. It feels like he lucked into those wins over Blackfield, Yoshii, and Rodriguez. If he also does well this season, maybe he'll convince me he's legit. Otherwise I dunno.

Indigo Rose feels similar. Ought to be 4-10, not 6-8. Unlike Gibson, this is directly a result of her sweeping Diamond and stealing one from Rodriguez. She managed to skate this season, but the next may see her relegated. It's like a Wasserman situation, if you've read the Beta commentary already. The jobbers coming in from above are worse, but she's still got to keep her game up to maintain her position. No chance she contends for promotion.

Jun Onoo has been deservedly relegated. Bad stamina, one dimensional, no advantages over anyone he can't overpower the whole way. Lost 4 straight to get relegated, including winnables in Gibson and Rose. Enjoy getting your ass kicked by Dhillon and Kichi, bud. Hell, Sterling Silver will probably kick your ass, too.

El Tornado has only one win. He jobbed to everyone extra hard. He can also enjoy getting his ass kicked by Dhillon, Kichi, and Silver. If anybody's going directly to Omega next season, it's this guy.

Yoshii Nakamatsu ought to feel robbed. Rodriguez probably hates Blackfield more, but Yoshii definitely has his own grudge. He was very clearly the class of hte division after Season 8. And Blackfield turned him into a speed bump on the way to the division title. Everything but that ugly loss to El Tornado he did right. 10-4 as a record literally won the League Championship this season. But Blackfield is virtually unstoppable (sweeping him in the process), and now Yoshii is stuck with him again in Beta. And, if I'm right, the season after in Alpha. But you know, we'll see how it goes.

And finally, Delta time. Commentary in following post, as usual now. I'm not going to be quite as objective, seeing as how two of mine were in this division. I will, however, still try to keep it up to the prior standard of objectivity.

Delta Division Commentary

Christian Priest is a beast. Only two people beat him, and only one of them did it twice. He will not have to deal with Monty Dhillon in Gamma, so he'll likely run roughshod over the division. He may not have started well, but after that 0-2 start he only lost once. That's a promotion winning effort. Can't wait for Molina and Priest to collide again, bud. Cheers.

Devil's Delight was a jobber, yes, but given she was expected to be the bottom basement jobber this season she's arguably had a good season. This doesn't mean she was any good, really, or any threat to promote next season. In fact, she's only avoiding relegation on a technicality from the League's ownership/managers. With that said, I'm looking forward to seeing how she progresses in her second season. And whether it's enough to stave off relegation on her own merits, as I don't believe she'll be protected a second time.

Jimmy Anarchy, however, is gone. This season's bottom basement jobber. Beaten up by basically everyone, he is banished to Omega. He will not be missed.

Kichi Hida is the first of my PCs. Honestly, I don't know where the wheels fell off. She lost her last five matches. I never expected her to promote, however. She's my "fun" PC, more or less. With that said, Molina and Priest are gone. So her, Dhillon, and Silver are the top candidates to take the division next season. We will see how it goes. Rest assured, her violent style will remain unchanged. :D

Lucas Molina is my other PC, who was as dominant as Priest. He just kept winning. A fluke loss to Abernathy barely slowed him down. Priest evened things up, and then he swept Dhillon and basically guaranteed his promotion. Just a casual juggernaut. He shouldn't slow down much in Gamma, either. Though I won't say that he'll win the division outright, he's got an excellent chance to promote again.

Monty Dhillon was also monstrous and dominant. Like Priest, he lost to two people. Unlike Priest, he lost to Kichi and Molina twice each. Peel one of those off, and he's actually the one who promotes. So hell, yes he's going to win the division this season. Everyone else is competing for second. To make it clear, he swept everyone else in the division but my PCs. I doubt anybody can stop him from getting the division title.

Lord Robert Abernathy was...look, he did a lot of jobbing, okay? With Delight not being relegated, it's his head on the chopping block next to Anarchy. He had plenty of opportunities to do better. He did not. I don't know if he's gone, but I do know I wouldn't miss him much.

Sterling Silver I view as Kichi's rival. She's  perfect mid table wrestler. Good enough to beat the jobbers (except Delight, who swept her) but not quite enough to challenge the elite in the division. With that said,  tough to be mid table if the top is gone. With Molina and Priest promoted, she will compete (mostly likely strongly) for that second promotion spot. I have...doubts about El Tornado and Jun Onoo doing anything interesting other than jobbing some more.

Ye Olden Times: Of Wrestlehuts and Rowdiness

It’s been a known secret that these GMPCs are not brand new to me. I even made mention of it in one of the opening posts in the two threads that encompass The League. That prior incarnation was set up in an NFL-style format, with a 16-week schedule, eight divisions of four with play between divisions, a twelve-wrestler playoff system, and so forth. In addition the starting stat point totals were a bit lower than what was used here.  It’s not quite the streamlined format that this new version of The League has, so it’s hard to make direct comparisons between the two.

Much like EP did in the posts above, I’m going to briefly discuss where GMPCs—some of whom you have not seen yet here in The League—were competing and how they fared. It won’t be as in-depth as EP’s stuff above as this data is roughly two years out of date by now, but it’s interesting to me to see the differences between then and now.

Each division had its own gimmick, which will also be touched on below. That said, we begin with…

RED DIVISION: The Land of the Giants

The first division I’ll mention was the Red Division, home to the big heavyweights and above. The smallest person in here could still manage to lift the biggest one, though only barely, and the ring had to be specially reinforced prior to a Red Division bout.  That is, until the second full season of this project, and the introduction of my version of Rey Mysterio in one Mel O’Hallister.

GMPCs in the Red Division consisted of the following:

·         Otto von Schwarz, who dominated the first season with a 10-6 record and then stumbled the remaining season and change, finishing 17-21 (44.74%) overall.

·         Jun Onoo, who left after two full seasons with a 12-20 (37.50%) record.

·         Sven Ulafsson, who was in for the entirety and was never a contender with a final record of 9-29 (23.68%).

·         The Siberian Nightmare, who went a dismal 3-13 in the opening season but was leading the division at 5-1 when burnout forced me to shut the project down. Final record was 8-14 (36.36%).

·         Mel O’Hallister, who was brought in to be the exception to the rule and stunned everyone with an 11-5 record ins season two.  His fortunes were far worse when the previous project ended, on a 2-4 record. Overall, he went 13-9 (59.09%).

YELLOW DIVISION: Cruiserweight Showcase

Some of the lighter, faster workers reside here. Just like not all cruiserweights in reality are not alike, such was the same here. A couple of fliers, a striker, and a man who would later become a juggernaut.

·         Yoshii Nakamatsu was the initial standout of the Yellow Division, ending with the sixth-best overall record among GMPCs, at 25-13 (65.79%).

·         Markus Clay, who was consistent at least with a pair of 9-7 seasons and an even 3-3 at the end. He finished tied with three others at 21-17 (55.26%).

·         The League’s modern juggernaut, Brian Blackfield, had a slower start in the other project, finishing third in the division in his first attempt at 9-7.  He won the division in the second season and was leading in the third when it ended. His 26-12 (68.42%) mark is fifth-best among GMPCs.

·         Elyssa Anderson has not debuted for The League yet, but ended with a 13-25 (34.21%) record.

BLUE DIVISION: Technical Wrestling Dominance

This division was home to all the grapplers and submission artists.  It would have been home to Big Scott Weathers as well, being a cheating foil to the grapplers, but most of the PCs seemed to fall into the Blue Division and I couldn’t justify putting them elsewhere.

·         The standout by far is another GMPC who has not been introduced to The League. Lance Heartilly, a Canadian technical master with a figure four leglock finisher and a Fujiwara armbar signature, won both League Championships and tied for the best record at 29-9 (76.32%). When The League returned here on GDS, I made the conscious decision to not bring him in, thinking a three or four season handicap might prove to be an equalizer.

·         Two PCs would fall next in the order, one of whom went 27-11 and the other 14-8.

·         Back to the GMPCs, Diego Rodriguez only stuck around one season, going 6-10 (37.50%) during it.

·         Indigo Rose fared slightly worse, at a total 13-25 (34.21%).

WHITE DIVISION: We are here to entertain you

This is where the Entertainer style wrestlers and those who played sports entertainment style gimmicks were housed. Two more divisions later are “gimmick” divisions but based around a specific thing or idea; this is just a catch-all for entertainment types.

·         The clear star of this division is former League Champion Brandy McDonald. Sporting a 14-2 record in the opening campaign, she wasted it on a one-and-done playoff run. She’d end up with the third-best record overall at 27-11 (71.05%).

·         Contrary to League norms, Terrance Stevens was at least a passable wrestler elsewhere. In the first season, he went 11-5. In the second, he reversed that to 5-11. An overall 16-16 (50.00%) record is all he has to show for his time.

·         PC here, with a 22-16 record.

·         Jean-Paul Ouilette…yeah, the guy in the Beta Division, remember him?  You’d never know he was a contender here in the League after a dismal 5-17 (22.73%) performance in a season and change.

·         George Mastachas also underwhelmed, sporting a 9-13 (40.91%) record in the same timespan.

GREEN DIVISION: Money, money, money, money, moneeeeeeyyyyyy….

So, the two gimmick divisions? This is one of them, focused entire around money: those who have it and flaunt it, those who make more of it holding a working man down, and eventually a woman who was ruined by a motorcycle gang so obsessed with it that they pushed her and her sister into drugs.

·         This is where Lord Robert Abernathy shined. A 23-15 (60.53%) record, including an 11-5 opening season, marked him as the clear top wrestler in this division.

·         A PC in this division went 18-14 over two seasons.

·         Daniel Simmons, my take on the everyman wrestler, was among the group who finished at 21-17 (55.26%). This includes an 11-5 run in the second season.

·         The boss that everyone hates, Erick Gibson, was a dismal failure in the other project with a 5-17 (22.73%) record.

·         And then there’s Devil’s Delight. She served the same purpose there that she does here—to be a guinea pig for the surgery/body wear mechanic, and as such she takes 30% more long-term body condition damage. Her opening season? 0-16. She was 2-4 in the final season, and her overall 2-20 record (9.09%) is by far the worst overall in terms of win percentage.

ORANGE DIVISION: Lucha Above-ground.

Three luchadors, and one Australian who was just as quick as them, made up this division.

·         Billy Norris was the clear standout here, boasting a 27-11 (71.05%) record overall, tied with Brandy McDonald for third-best.

·         Then there’s Pulsar, who was trending quite well at 21-17 (55.26%) including an 11-5 campaign. Not like current day Pulsar.

·         El Tornado seemed to be struggling among his fellow luchadors, sporting a 15-23 (39.47%) record.

·         In the rear is Sterling Silver, with a dismal 13-25 (34.21%) overall record.

PURPLE DIVISION: Brawl for all.

This is where “legit” athletes and fighters squared up, with the only submission finishers done by MMA crossovers. Everyone else relied on pummeling and straight up battering of opponents to knock them out.

·         A PC was the star of this division, sporting a 26-12 record and two divisional titles.

·         Behind him was De’siree Mitchell, wrestling under her normal ring name of Diamond Steel. Within striking distance each of the first two seasons, she was leading in the third when the project ended, and closed with a 23-15 (60.53%) record.

·         A far distance behind him was Vladimir Chavinski, an MMA fighter whose career ended in his first match when he blatantly kicked his opponent in the groin in the first ten seconds of his professional debut. His 18-20 (47.37%) overall record seems to indicate he would not have fared much better in the MMA world.

·         Angela Wassermann, a former champion at the regional MMA level, struggled against people outside her weight class and finished 7-15 (31.82%) in a season and a bit.

·         The Mastodon only lasted a season, with his 3-13 (18.75%) record a terrible showing given his record in The League.

BLACK DIVISION: Where religion goes to fight.

Finally, the Black Division. Another gimmick division, this one is based on religious themes. Here’s where you’ll find a preacher, the embodiment of sin itself, a cultist, and a full-blown atheist mixed in with a PC.

·         Reverend Johnny Gross was far and away the best in the division. Tying Lance Heartilly atop the leaderboard with a 29-9 (76.32%) record, and one runner-up position in this project. He lost the season two finals to Heartilly by one fall in an iron man match.

·         The cultist Blood River would be the only minor GMPC success story of the Black Division. He was tied for the season three division lead with Gross when the project folded, and ended with a 21-17 (55.26%) record.

·         A PC would be here, at 13-9.

·         The rest of the division would be terrible. First up was Sin, who didn’t do much better in The League. Her record in this other project was 5-17 (22.73%), though for fun I tried to play up the intrigue that she and Reverend Gross may have been an off-camera couple.

·         Jimmy Anarchy’s fondness for hardcore brawls did him no good here either, as a 6-26 overall record (18.75%) were disastrous. This included a 1-15 campaign that was only worsened by the winless campaign in the same season by Devil’s Delight.

So these five are definitely in Omega, right? Lance Heartilly is probably not, yet. Three or four season wait, and it's only been two.

I think the discrepancies between seasons can be partially explained, as you said, by the difference in point allocation. The other, as you don't have the strict versus records anymore, is probably the biases built into the game's systems. The following are my opinions, please don't take them as gospel truth. I've told you before Stamina is the God Stat. The lower the wrestler's stamina, the easier it is to hit moves on them. But it's deeper than that. Pure highflying is deeply suboptimal compared with power, brawling, or technical grappling. The To Hit of most Top Rope, Springboard, and Slingshot moves is kind of awful compared with relatively equivalent moves from other spots. Especially considering missing one of them is an excellent way to not only lose control, but take damage, get stunned, and be down on the mat. Miss a finisher from the top rope, and you're probably losing. Moreover, high fliers have to invest in Speed and Athleticism, the latter of which does nothing but qualify characters to use moves. Speed has uses defensively but mostly doesn't help offensively like Striking, Grapple, and Ground do.

Futhermore, technical grappling is the easiest way to wear down momentum, which adds increasing penalties against non Low moves the less there is and bonuses for all non Low moves the more there is. It's also the only move suite with moves that directly attack Stamina. I've not really exploited that with Molina (I have a different guy who uses that gimmick, and it's nasty), but otherwise his success hasn't been the biggest surprise.

So, you know. Technical grappling is best, I think brawling/striking is second because every move doesn't necessary drop the opponent to the ground, power is a close third, and high flying is dead last. You know, in terms of optimal character building strategies. With that said, optimal isn't always the most fun which is why I have both Lucas Molina the submission technician, Kichi Hida the brawling flyer, , and another pair down in Omega who may or may not get up here next season. Joslin Baroni the tiny flier and Rock Sheridan the literally giant brawler.

So these five are definitely in Omega, right? Lance Heartilly is probably not, yet. Three or four season wait, and it's only been two.

Known wrestlers in Omega include:

  • Elyssa Anderson
  • Vladimir Chavinski
  • The Siberian Nightmare
  • Sven Ulafsson
  • Sin
  • Otto von Schwarz
  • Lance Heartilly (I caved, figured two seasons might be enough given some of the improvement I've seen...and I do not expect Heartilly to pull a Brian Blackfield either)
  • Rock Sheridan (as mentioned by EP)
  • Joslin Baroni (also mentioned by EP)

There are also five completely new GMPCs that I made strictly to help add numbers to the Omega Division, and one of whom I'm keeping a close eye on as I'd like to see her make The League on her own merits. I will provide no other details on them at this time and want to save them for the surprise factor if they manage to make it.

As for other potential PCs, I'll let those be a mystery.

Ahhhh, Nuclear... you never fail to disappoint when the time is right, turning a championship win into a nice loss to warm things up for next season 😛

Derek, I prefer to think of it as "Nuclear's friends encouraged him to take a dive in a meaningless match so they could earn even more money with their legitimate sports betting against him, and he got a generous cut of the proceeds."

That's a good call.... and the more unpredictable The League is, the harder it is for the general population to know who is going to win, while Nuclear's friends always know who should win.  I look forward to Nuclear only taking losses next season when there is big money in it for him and his friends 😛

Moments after the season finale...

Well, that was probably not how Nuclear Templeton wanted to finish the season. Now let's go backstage where Daphne Ellis is trying to catch up with our new League Champion. Daphne, were you able to get Templeton's thoughts on tonight's match?

...

So I'm guessing that's a 'no'?

Oh, the tumbleweeds tumble.

Best of luck with FF16, boss. It's apparently pretty neat.

The demo really sold me on it. The downside is I still have to put my hours in at work. 😰

Checking in for a quick update:

I am nowhere near as far in FF XVI as I’d like to be. Curse work and having to, know, sell my non-existent soul to pay some greedy corporation for a roof over my head but poorly maintained stairs to reach it. 🤪

I am still aiming for a mid-July reopening for any new players interested in joining the Delta Division. I’m about halfway through Omega Division stuff give or take, though I haven’t touched it since XVI came out.

Once I get closer to the end of the first play through for XVI (since you need to do two to get the platinum trophy, and the second will be a little more loose with my time dedication), I’ll have a more concrete idea as to the timeline for Season Ten, as well as any new wrinkles to add to The League that you may start seeing sooner than you may expect….
