The League, Redux: Seasons 8 and Beyond Game Thread

AUTHOR’S NOTE: As you’ve no doubt seen over the last week or so, Croquemitaine’s been on a tear with new renders. What started as a request for a Nocturne render—y’all saw what I had in reserve in the Second Interlude post above, tell me Croquemitaine’s isn’t a vast improvement!—has seemed to turn into a passion project for him. We can credit him for renders of Monty Dhillon, Christian Priest/Pastor Abe Richards, Nocturne, George Mastachas, Jun Onoo, Brian Blackfield, Diego Rodriguez, and Lucas Molina as of the time of this post…I think that’s all of them, according to a quick scan of my PMs. Some of those will be shown for the first time in the thread this week. That’s roughly a quarter of the current League roster re-rendered by him alone, so show the guy some love and appreciation!

THE LEAGUE: SEASON TEN, WEEK ONE

DELTA DIVISION

2iWu9Xc.jpg (1) Lance Heartilly (0-0, OVR 400)

vs.

(1) Devil's Delight (0-0, OVR 415) 54miFm6.jpgxJrKs53.jpg

This went the way everyone pretty much expected it would. Delight didn’t even get a chance to get any offense in until nearly four minutes into the contest. By then she was already in a hole she would not be able to escape from. To her credit, she did survive Heartilly’s arm breaker a couple times, and avoided a half-dozen attempts at the Hellacious Leglock before Heartilly finally got it applied and Delight had to tap.

Lance Heartilly (1-0) def. Devil's Delight (0-1) via Submission (Hellacious Leglock) in 10:38.  Rating: **

Changes for Lance Heartilly:  OVR + 4.00, XP + 485.10, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.28, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION HARDCORE MATCH

BEVGy0x.jpg (1) Nocturne (0-0, OVR 400)

vs.

(1) Kichi Hida (0-0, OVR 428) 4ZAKk1I.jpg

This match spilled outside the ring at about six minutes into the contest, at Hida’s insistence. Despite being a technically-trained wrestler, though, Nocturne gave as good as she got, utilizing the chairs Kichi introduced to hit a seated face plant a couple of times on them. She wasn’t able to get her ankle lock applied, though, and Kichi would chain her Bumper Kars knee into the Eternal Violence to put Nocturne down for three while still around ringside.

Kichi Hida (1-0) def. Nocturne (0-1) via Pinfall (Eternal Violence) in 11:24.  Rating: **

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR + 4.05, XP + 485.47, minor damage to head

Changes for Nocturne:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.37, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

m6kdW7F.jpg (1) Jun Onoo (0-0, OVR 452)

vs.

(1) Scott Stevens (0-0, OVR 400) fYy1oxq.jpgfTtB0pK.jpg

To be fair to Onoo, he tried to keep it close. He took an early advantage and had Stevens in range of Lasting Agony, but the League veteran fought back easily, battering Onoo enough that it only took two attempts to hit his piledriver. It was rather academic from there, as Stevens wins his return match in the quickest bout of the night so far.

Scott Stevens (1-0) def. Jun Onoo (0-1) via Pinfall (Deep in the Heart of Texas) in 9:26.  Rating: **

Changes for Scott Stevens:  OVR + 3.93, XP + 484.53, no notable damage

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.13, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

N0Y594C.jpg (1) Markus Clay (0-0, OVR 450)

vs.

(1) Terrance Stevens (0-0, OVR 449) ginc2gw.jpg

This one went faster than any of the prior Delta Division bouts.  Stevens started with an early advantage, was unable to keep it going, and Clay made him suffer for it. The Johannesburg Express wasn’t even needed for this one; Clay was able to do the job with a simple slingshot splash to keep the Canadian down for the count despite taking enough shots to the head to leave the ring slightly dinged up.

Markus Clay (1-0) def. Terrance Stevens (0-1) via Pinfall (slingshot splash) in 7:04.  Rating: **

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 3.08, XP + 555.90, minor damage to head

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR -0.07, XP + 138.98, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

2X2r9qf.jpg (1) Indigo Rose (0-0, OVR 448)

vs.

(1) Diamond (0-0, OVR 457) 0rDaDU8.jpg

Longest match of the night so far, and in the author’s view should have been rated higher. It was back-and-forth throughout, with Diamond using her speed to attempt to stay away from the technical offense of Rose, and Rose keeping Diamond grounded when she was in control. Rose started to pull away by the thirteenth minute, and Diamond was so concerned with countering Rose’s submission arsenal that she forgot to account for Rose’s variated DDT and was pinned for her hubris. Rose moves to 3-0 lifetime against Diamond in what should rightly have been a Match of the Night contender.

Indigo Rose (1-0) def. Diamond (0-1) via Pinfall (Blood From a Rose) in 15:45.  Rating: **

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 4.29, XP + 560.69, minor damage to head

Changes for Diamond:  OVR -0.08, XP + 140.17, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

limej5G.jpgxd5Rq8a.jpg (1) Erick Gibson (0-0, OVR 463)

vs.

(1) Lucas Molina (0-0, OVR 444) LG3TCXf.jpg

Karen McClure tried to stop Molina’s early momentum some four minutes into the bout, but that wouldn’t keep Molina down for long. Sure, Gibson got his share of offense in, but nowhere near enough as a pair of Puerto Rican Legsweeps, and a Greetings from San Juan preceded the inevitable San Juan Buster. Molina cruises to victory after a rough opening few minutes to win his Gamma Division debut.

Lucas Molina (1-0) def. Erick Gibson (0-1) via Pinfall (San Juan Buster) in 14:00.  Rating: **

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 4.19, XP + 559.73, no notable damage

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR -0.07, XP + 111.95, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

OOiJTFx.jpg (1) Big Scott Weathers (0-0, OVR 459)

vs.

(1) Angela Wassermann (0-0, OVR 445) ZCYwviV.jpg

Quick foray into the Beta Division, and out first actual Match of the Night contender. Weathers got off to a quick start, had to endure some counter offense from Wassermann, went back on the offense himself, but left himself exposed to a spinning elbow blow. While that did not get the three count, it put Weathers on his hind foot enough that Wassermann locked in her cross arm breaker after hitting Weathers with a flurry of punches to the back and sides of his head. Weathers was left with no choice but to tap, starting his Beta Division career in dubious fashion.

Angela Wassermann (1-0) def. Big Scott Weathers (0-1) via Submission (Wassermann Cross Arm Breaker) in 16:30.  Rating: ***

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 5.61, XP + 687.15, minor damage to head

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 171.79, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

LTFF6jR.jpg (1) El Tornado (0-0, OVR 429)

vs.

(1) Monty Dhillon (0-0, OVR 484) vz0qqDp.jpg

Never in doubt from the opening bell. By all rights, Monty should have locked up fastest victory in League history here, except that Tornado somehow did not tap out to the Blockade Lock at only the 2:35 mark. It took Monty about that long to hit another finisher and put Tornado away, and instead has to settle for his twentieth career win being the fifth-fastest finish in League history in a “swiftly executed demolition job.”

Monty Dhillon (1-0) def. El Tornado (0-1) via Pinfall (Empire Bomb) in 4:57.  Rating: *

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 2.60, XP + 442.18, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.79, XP + 110.54, minor damage to body

BETA DIVISION

VfA2MW8.jpg (1) Pulsar (0-0, OVR 449)

vs.

(1) Jean-Paul Ouilette (0-0, OVR 480) ZThYhej.jpgAAdEYyr.jpg

A quick-paced match, this was a contender for Match of the Night as well. Rather even in terms of offense, Pulsar continued to keep a fast tempo even after missing slingshot and springboard moves on a few occasions. However, even he couldn’t keep the speed up after Ouilette went low on him on two separate occasions. After the second one, it was only about a minute later that Ouilette landed Le Petit Mort to hand the former Alpha Division wrestler his first loss in Beta Division competition.

Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0) def. Pulsar (0-1) via Pinfall (Le Petit Mort) in 11:06.  Rating: ***

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 5.21, XP + 683.50, minor damage to head

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 0.72, XP + 170.88, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

giFlbJV.jpg (1) Yoshii Nakamatsu (0-0, OVR 478)

vs.

(1) Billy Norris (0-0, OVR 476) ayWv1C3.jpg

This match had very little chemistry to it and just did not seem to flow very well at all. Nakamatsu came into this contest a bit hesitant, as if not sure what to expect of Norris, and paid for the hesitance as Norris controlled the later two-thirds of the contest. Yes, Nakamatsu got some offense in but his only serious offensive attempt—the DEVASTATION Knee—was avoided and soon turned into a Boomerang DDT. Norris would not need to go for the Disaster, the DDT was enough to ruin Nakamatsu’s Beta Division debut.

Billy Norris (1-0) def. Yoshii Nakamatsu (0-1) via Pinfall (Boomerang DDT) in 13:18.  Rating: *

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 2.93, XP + 579.61, no notable damage

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR -0.89, XP + 144.90, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (1) Brandy McDonald (0-0, OVR 489)

vs.

(1) De'siree Mitchell (0-0, OVR 466) p54rf5F.jpg

We start our Alpha Division block of the evening with two perennial contenders for the League Championship. In the opening minutes, it looked like it was going to be a one-sided affair in favor of the former nose tackle, as she put the former League Champion on the defensive early. McDonald would fight back, as she has a tendency to do, and about twelve minutes in take the overall health lead for good. A spear only got a one count, but Mitchell got up from the pin and walked right into a Brandy with a Twist, and that was enough to keep her down for the count as Brandy’s third season in The League starts with another victory, her twentieth overall.

Brandy McDonald (1-0) def. De'siree Mitchell (0-1) via Pinfall (Brandy with a Twist) in 15:19.  Rating: **

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 4.27, XP + 731.03, minor damage to head

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.76, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

ha8RmaF.jpg (1) Daniel Simmons (0-0, OVR 488)

vs.

(1) George Mastachas (0-0, OVR 471) FXyrc6C.jpg

Simmons thought he had drawn a good opponent for his Alpha Division debut. After all, Mastachas had that Achilles heel problem, perfect to exploit with his Quitting Time ankle lock, right? Mastachas never got that memo. This was a Match of the Night contender, and rightly so as it went back-and-forth for the duration. The only downside is that Simmons just could not wear Mastachas down enough to attempt the ankle lock, while Mastachas had no such issues in delivering a Wrath of Zeus. Mastachas starts his third campaign in the top flight with a hard-fought win.

George Mastachas (1-0) def. Daniel Simmons (0-1) via Pinfall (Wrath of Zeus) in 17:12.  Rating: ***

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 5.66, XP + 793.42, no notable damage

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 198.35, minor damage to head and body

ALPHA DIVISION

FqeSGy6.jpg (1) Nuclear Templeton (0-0, OVR 486)

vs.

(1) The Mastodon (0-0, OVR 474) iLs7NYn.jpg

Nuclear came to the ring for the first time this season with a swagger long-time viewers were not used to. It seemed that, to most of those viewers, Nuclear had let becoming the League Champion get to his head, and seemed to have already dismissed his former Tag Team Turmoil partner as unworthy before the bell even rang. To quote an older meme, The Mastodon “took that personally,” exploding out of his corner when the bell sounded and putting Nuclear through the paces. Templeton would get some offense in, but nothing too serious, and Mastodon would batter Templeton with enough high-powered offense that a press powerslam would be enough to keep the League Champion down. To add insult to injury, Mastodon grabbed the title from ringside and unceremoniously dropped it on Nuclear’s chest before leaving the ring, already making a statement that Nuclear’s got a target on his back this season.

The Mastodon (1-0) def. Nuclear Templeton (0-1) via Pinfall (press powerslam) in 12:04.  Rating: **

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 4.08, XP + 728.69, no notable damage

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.17, no notable damage

ALPHA DIVISION

IgD64Oj.jpg (1) Reverend Johnny Gross (0-0, OVR 479)

vs.

(1) Mel O'Hallister (0-0, OVR 490) e8cytyP.jpg

As the opening bell sounded, Gross officially became the first wrestler to return to a division he was previously relegated from. O’Hallister welcomed him with a barrage of strikes that stunned Gross for a minute before the Right Reverend fought back, and a slugfest ensued in the middle of the ring. In a straight fight, only strikes, Gross was going to lose every time to O’Hallister and this was no different. The Irishman beat Gross down enough that he could start applying holds, and while two Irish Clovers did not lead to submissions, they hurt Gross enough that he couldn’t avoid a spinning backfist, and then the follow-up Dream of the Emerald Isle to spoil Gross’s return to the Alpha Division!

Mel O'Hallister (1-0) def. Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1) via Pinfall (Dream of the Emerald Isle) in 14:13.  Rating: **

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 4.21, XP + 730.24, no notable damage

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.56, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

G4sbiHU.jpg (1) Diego Rodriguez (0-0, OVR 473)

vs.

(1) Christian Priest (0-0, OVR 514) YICOeYe.jpgMZ2VDcB.jpg

Bob Sinclair: Penultimate match of the evening here, as we conclude Gamma Division competition with a bout between the technical specialist Diego Rodriguez, and the recently-promoted Christian Priest.

Frankie Garnett: This oughta be good, Bob. First time Priest’s facing some better competition, but if his last two seasons are any indication, this is going to be a cakewalk for him. I cannot wait for the violence to start!

Bob Sinclair: So is that why you were almost drooling during the Kichi Hida bout?

Frankie Garnett:  …I refuse to answer. In any event, there’sthebellwe’reunderway!

Bob Sinclair: *exasperated sigh*

(02:58) Rodriguez hit a Single Leg Trip

(03:05) Rodriguez hit a Knee Pull

(03:09) Rodriguez hit a Fist Drop

(03:23) Rodriguez applied a Body Scissors

Bob Sinclair: We can see Rodriguez already working on his plan of attack, Frankie. Wear-down holds like the body scissors are a good way to test the cardio of an opponent, and Priest’s larger size usually means that’s a weak point.

Frankie Garnett: Key word there is “usually,” Bob. Priest has it in him to go thirty minutes in the ring and then immediately do another thirty in the pulpit! It’s going to take more than that to wear him out!

(06:51) Christian Priest moved out of the way from a Measured Knee Drop.

(06:59) Priest picked up Rodriguez

(07:06) Priest hit a Strong Charging Forearm

Bob Sinclair: Priest looks content to let Rodriguez get back into the ring under his own recognizance. Not sure that’s a smart move, it’s a known fact that Diego is uncomfortable wrestling outside the ring.

Frankie Garnett: That’s part of the mental game, Bob. Make the opponent think you’re going to take advantage, but wait in the ring instead and make then expend the effort to get back in the ring on their own. I think it’s a smart move by Priest.

Christian Priest (1-0) def. Diego Rodriguez (0-1) via Pinfall (Canonized) in 11:45.  Rating: ****

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 6.46, XP + 613.25, no notable damage

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 1.53, XP + 277.89, moderate damage to head

This was the Match of the Night (8 [1 this season] for Christian Priest, 2 [1 this season] for Diego Rodriguez)

Author’s Note: Priest’s 8 MOTNs is double that of second place (Mastodon, who has 4). It is confirmed, Maven Deltzer worships at the altar of the First Church of Wrestling and that is now official headcanon.

BETA DIVISION

Lp89uMT.jpg (1) Brian Blackfield (0-0, OVR 518)

vs.

(1) Blood River (0-0, OVR 478) T127n44.jpgdTs8j7q.jpg

Main event time. The Juggernaut has come to his third division in three seasons, looking for more victims on his march to the Alpha Division and a League Championship.  Blood River would be the first sacrifice, as the cultist never got out of the starting blocks. Blackfield would not even need one of his signatures to finish the job, and in less than eight minutes, the main event was finished with Blackfield dominating en route to his first win in the Beta Division.

Brian Blackfield (1-0) def. Blood River (0-1) via Pinfall (forward Russian legsweep) in 7:44.  Rating: *

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 2.71, XP + 576.42, no notable damage

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.82, XP + 144.11, minor damage to head

PREDICTIONS AND TRAINING PMs ARE DUE NO LATER THAN 11:59 PM EASTERN US TIME ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 4!

The Roster List post will be slightly delayed in updating due to some input errors on my spreadsheet and things not pointing where they're supposed to be. I hope to have the errors fixed by 1 PM Eastern US.  EDIT: I think everything is pointing where it's supposed to--mainly the PC traits list since I have to update those manually and for some reason it hadn't taken the last update or two I put in. Fixed, everything should now be up to date.

New Division, New Opponents, Same Bangers out of Priest. You can keep your chain wrestling and 60min classics, The First Church provides for the modern fan - Stiff strikes, powerbombs and lariats in 15 minutes or less!

Also Monty in ominous form early, a sub three minute finisher even in Delta is nuts.

WEEK TWO SCHEDULE

ALPHA DIVISION

(4) George Mastachas (1-0, OVR 477) vs. (2) Mel O'Hallister (1-0, OVR 495) [Career: Even 1-1]

- Getting on the O'Hallister train early, my pick for the League Title in Season 10

(3) Brandy McDonald (1-0, OVR 493) vs. (6) Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1, OVR 479) [Career: Brandy 2-0]

(6) Nuclear Templeton (0-1, OVR 486) vs. (5) Daniel Simmons (0-1, OVR 489) [First Career Meeting]

- Nuclear should be too big and strong here.

(6) De'siree Mitchell (0-1, OVR 466) vs. (1) The Mastodon (1-0, OVR 478) [Career: Mastodon 3-1]

BETA DIVISION

(2) Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0, OVR 485) vs. (1) Brian Blackfield (1-0, OVR 521) [First Career Meeting]

- Something about JPO's Sports Entertainment being the counter to the Scottish Grappling Machine that is Brian Blackfield has me giddy.

(3) Billy Norris (1-0, OVR 479) vs. (4) Angela Wassermann (1-0, OVR 451) [Career: Norris 4-0]

(7) Blood River (0-1, OVR 477) vs. (5) Big Scott Weathers (0-1, OVR 459) [First Career Meeting]

(5) Pulsar (0-1, OVR 449) vs. (7) Yoshii Nakamatsu (0-1, OVR 477) [First Career Meeting]

GAMMA DIVISION

(2) Christian Priest (1-0, OVR 521) vs. (6) Erick Gibson (0-1, OVR 463) [First Career Meeting]

- Should be a cracking brawl honestly, which favors Priest (touch wood)

(6) Terrance Stevens (0-1, OVR 449) vs. (5) Diego Rodriguez (0-1, OVR 475) [First Career Meeting]

(1) Markus Clay (1-0, OVR 454) vs. (6) Diamond (0-1, OVR 457) [First Career Meeting]

- Despite struggling with ground-based wrestlers, Diamond does fare well against high fliers.

(3) Lucas Molina (1-0, OVR 448) vs. (4) Indigo Rose (1-0, OVR 453) [First Career Meeting]

- A proper test for both here. Molina facing a better quality submission-ist than himself for the first time and for Rose to see if she'll be a contender this season. I'll back the larger Molina (and their better cardio).

DELTA DIVISION

(1) Monty Dhillon (1-0, OVR 487) vs. (5) Nocturne (0-1, OVR 400) [First Career Meeting]

- The Dhillion Express to keep on rolling. Too much size, too much power here, calling an Empire Bomb in 6 minutes.

(5) Jun Onoo (0-1, OVR 452) vs. (8) El Tornado (0-1, OVR 428) [Career: Onoo 3-1]

(4) Kichi Hida (1-0, OVR 432) vs. (3) Lance Heartilly (1-0, OVR 404) [First Career Meeting]

- Heartily to ground and pick apart Hida's bad leg

(5) Devil's Delight (0-1, OVR 415) vs. (2) Scott Stevens (1-0, OVR 404) [First Career Meeting]

- Would love to see it, but can't picture Delight putting down the Scorpion.

Since this is one of the only weeks on the schedule that have zero GMPC updates, I’m going to get started on their matches tonight.

ALPHA: O’Hallister, Brandy, Simmons, Mastodon. (I almost think Nuclear’s shaken after that loss last week and will not recover in time.)

BETA: Blackfield, Norris, River, Nakamatsu. (Come on. 4-0 in two seasons? That’s as much of a lock as is simply saying “Brian Blackfield.”)

GAMMA: Priest, T. Stevens, Diamond, Molina

DELTA: Dhillon, Onoo, Heartilly, Delight. (As much as I want to pick Nocturne, she’s not ready for Monty yet. Delight is my upset pick for the week.)

To be fair (to be faaaaaair) Monty's opponent was El Tornado. I don't believe there's a bigger jobber in the League at present. I'm looking forward, still, to Priest & Molina colliding again. Especially the second one in Week 13. European Rules, bay bee. LFG.

PREDICTIONS AND TRAINING PMs ARE DUE NO LATER THAN 11:59 PM EASTERN US TIME ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 4!

So I’ve managed to run the majority of matches last night, including 5 of the 7 PC matches as I have confirmed training/banking of XP from them.

The clubhouse leader for MOTN is a 4-star match, time unknown because I’m drawing a blank on it at work.

Unrelated, I’ve gotten to see one redesign of a Beta Division wrestler that hasn’t appeared in the thread yet—the headshots are likely debuting this week and the full render is at Croquemitaine’s discretion since he’s got a plan in mind and I’m not gonna interfere—but holy freaking heck that full render. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s reactions to that reveal when it happens.

Also unrelated, I can officially confirm that the weekend of August 26 will be an off week for The League. I secured the tickets to Maryland’s RennFest this morning so I will be out of the apartment and away from my computers from roughly 6 AM local time until about 9 PM local time, with 7 of those hours being on the road.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON TEN, WEEK TWO

DELTA DIVISION

xJrKs53.jpg54miFm6.jpg (5) Devil's Delight (0-1, OVR 415)

vs.

(2) Scott Stevens (1-0, OVR 404) fYy1oxq.jpgfTtB0pK.jpg

To Delight’s credit, she made Stevens work for this one. A couple of Toxic Stings were thwarted, as was one attempt at the piledriver. A Stevens powerbomb led to Devil’s Angel running interference, but even that wasn’t enough as Delight never got enough sustained offense and momentum on her side to attempt her Hellborne Rising, much less a finisher. Just shy of eleven minutes in, Stevens connected from Deep In the Heart of Texas to get the expected pinfall over Delight.

Scott Stevens (2-0) def. Devil's Delight (0-2) via Pinfall (Deep In the Heart of Texas) in 10:54.  Rating: **

Changes for Scott Stevens:  OVR + 4.02, XP + 485.23, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR -0.07, XP + 97.05, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

4ZAKk1I.jpg (4) Kichi Hida (1-0, OVR 432)

vs.

(3) Lance Heartilly (1-0, OVR 404) 2iWu9Xc.jpg

An early Match of the Night contender, Hida took an early advantage in this one, seeming to prefer Glory in Violence and Bumper Kars as her modes of offense, hitting them no fewer than three times in the match each. Try as she might, though, she struggled to hit any of her other signatures save for the Funhouse Stomp (once), and it would be her repeated whiffs at the UFO Spin Elbow and Eternal Violence that would allow Heartilly to grind his way back into the match. It took him a half-dozen attempts before he could get the Hellacious Leglock fully applied, and Hida passed out from the pain a scant two inches away from the ropes, forcing the referee to call the bout in the Canadian’s favor.

Lance Heartilly (2-0) def. Kichi Hida (1-1) via Submission (Hellacious Leglock) in 14:43.  Rating: ***

Changes for Lance Heartilly:  OVR + 5.48, XP + 527.65, minor damage to head

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR + 0.76, XP + 131.91, moderate damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

m6kdW7F.jpg (5) Jun Onoo (0-1, OVR 452)

vs.

(8) El Tornado (0-1, OVR 428) LTFF6jR.jpg

As a reminder to what these two can do against each other, the author wishes to reference Season Eight, Week Six, in which Tornado won the Match of the Season against his much larger opponent. There would be no four-star classic here, but instead an early contender for Spot of the Season, perhaps: Tornado attempting a top rope cross body, having Onoo catch him in mid-flight and converting it into a sit-out spinebuster. That quite literally took the wind out of Tornado’s sails, and an IMPACT Driver a few moments later would be enough to put the luchador away.

Jun Onoo (1-1) def. El Tornado (0-2) via Pinfall (IMPACT Driver) in 9:21.  Rating: **

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR + 3.93, XP + 484.49, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.12, minor damage to head and body

DELTA DIVISION

vz0qqDp.jpg (1) Monty Dhillon (1-0, OVR 487)

vs.

(5) Nocturne (0-1, OVR 400) BEVGy0x.jpg

Dhillon jumped out to an early advantage, using his size to bully Nocturne around and stop any momentum she would build up. It took her a good couple of minutes to find some offense, and an inverted drop toe hold would be the start of it as she used the techniques she learned from her teacher, himself a (formerly) large man, to keep Dhillon off-balance. But all the hit-and-run tactics would just delay the inevitable, as a Livewire Lariat knocked Nocturne loopy, leading to the immediate Blockade Lock and the submission to move Dhillon to 2-0 on the young season.

Monty Dhillon (2-0) def. Nocturne (0-2) via Submission (Blockade Lock) in 8:31.  Rating: **

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 3.88, XP + 484.09, no notable damage

Changes for Nocturne:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.02, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

LG3TCXf.jpg (3) Lucas Molina (1-0, OVR 448)

vs.

(4) Indigo Rose (1-0, OVR 453) 2X2r9qf.jpg

Fans of the Gamma Division have long been spoiled for technical prowess with two of the best technical games in The League, Indigo Rose and Diego Rodriguez, firmly entrenched in the third division. The addition of Lucas Molina gave fans an extra added wrinkle to this season’s proceedings, and the first match between Rose and Molina did not disappoint, even if it wasn’t highly received by some. Rose squandered an early (and sizeable) advantage, as Molina found his way out of a number of holds and frustrating Rose. She went for her variated DDT, was countered, and had to fight the rest of the match on the defensive. Molina would not give her a chance to get any more offense in, as a Molina Bodylock eventually sealed the deal and pushes Molina to 2-0 on the season.

Lucas Molina (2-0) def. Indigo Rose (1-1) via Submission (Molina Bodylock) in 13:47.  Rating: **

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 4.18, XP + 559.61, no notable damage

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.90, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

N0Y594C.jpg (1) Markus Clay (1-0, OVR 454)

vs.

(6) Diamond (0-1, OVR 457) 0rDaDU8.jpg

A Match of the Night contender and rightfully so, this started as a pair of high-flyers facing off, with Clay taking advantage early on. He seemed more comfortable in the air, though Diamond was able to thwart some of his bigger moves and slowly swing the bout into her favor. About eight minutes in, Diamond seemed to throw Clay off by slowing the pace of the match down, shifting into almost a full defensive approach. One Clay mistake too many led to a Jawjacker, a running dropkick, and then a new wrinkle in Diamond’s arsenal but one familiar to long-time League viewers: a sharpshooter submission she dubs the Florentine. Clay was not expecting this, and was forced to tap after a few seconds of struggling. Diamond earns just her second victory by submission since the revival of The League.

Diamond (1-1) def. Markus Clay (1-1) via Submission (Florentine) in 12:21.  Rating: ***

GAMMA DIVISION

ginc2gw.jpg (6) Terrance Stevens (0-1, OVR 449)

vs.

(5) Diego Rodriguez (0-1, OVR 475) G4sbiHU.jpg

This match should likely have been a Match of the Night contender. It was Rodriguez’s technical game against the sports entertainment offense of Stevens, and on this night it was Rodriguez who simply outlasted his opponent. Stevens never managed an attempt at his superkick, while Rodriguez would only need a trio of attempts to lock in one of his submission finishers for the victory to even his record for the season.

Diego Rodriguez (1-1) def. Terrance Stevens (0-2) via Submission (Discordant Melody) in 13:41.  Rating: **

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 4.18, XP + 559.55, no notable damage

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.89, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

VfA2MW8.jpg (5) Pulsar (0-1, OVR 449)

vs.

(7) Yoshii Nakamatsu (0-1, OVR 477) giFlbJV.jpg

The end result made it look closer than it actually was. Nakamatsu controlled a fair portion of the contest, but had to endure some hard-hitting offense from Pulsar in spurts. What sealed the deal in the end is Nakamatsu forcing Pulsar to make an unforced error on the top rope, rushing the luchador twice to stop missile dropkicks, and then simply walking away from a top rope flying clothesline. The Emperor’s Fall came just moments later, and Nakamatsu gets back on track after a rough debut in the Beta Division.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (1-1) def. Pulsar (0-2) via Pinfall (Emperor’s Fall) in 12:06.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 4.09, XP + 631.55, no notable damage

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.89, minor damage to head

VZFWcYa.jpghAfQcot.jpg (7) Blood River (0-1, OVR 477)

vs.

(5) Big Scott Weathers (0-1, OVR 459) OOiJTFx.jpg

It’s far too early in the season to call any match a “must-win,” but River must have thought it was necessary as he came to the ring with a new entrance and ring gear, accompanied by two dozen people in masks and robes and chanting in some unknown tongue. It was enough to throw Weathers off his game mentally, and while the larger man would get back on track (including a low blow in the late stages), it wouldn’t be enough. River simply needed a slingshot moonsault to notch his first win of the season.

Blood River (1-1) def. Big Scott Weathers (0-2) via Pinfall (slingshot moonsault) in 10:10.  Rating: **

Changes for Blood River:  OVR + 3.98, XP + 630.34, no notable damage

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.59, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

ayWv1C3.jpg (3) Billy Norris (1-0, OVR 479)

vs.

(4) Angela Wassermann (1-0, OVR 451) aOXlwtV.jpg

A Match of the Night contender, something viewers might not expect from a pairing with a whole 2 Matches of the Night between them (both from Wassermann). Norris may have had the flashiest move in the match with a pop-up top rope arm drag to counter Wassermann’s attempt at a countered top rope move, but the former MMA fighter showed that she’s found another gear in her ground and submission game this season as she wore Norris down with a stretch muffler—new to her arsenal—and got Norris to worry too much about the stump puller she’s used to great effect before that he fell victim to her cross arm breaker for the submission, and her first victory against Norris in five tries.

Angela Wassermann (2-0) def. Billy Norris (1-1) via Submission (Wassermann Cross Arm Breaker) in 13:08.  Rating: ***

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 5.36, XP + 684.88, no notable damage

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 171.22, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

p54rf5F.jpg (6) De'siree Mitchell (0-1, OVR 466)

vs.

(1) The Mastodon (1-0, OVR 478) NSa1kkC.jpg

The best match of the night so far, this would have won honors for the show if not for something a few matches later…but more on that when we get to it. This was a brawl, plain and simple, with neither person backing down from their puroresu-based offense. Mastodon used his size to get out to an early advantage, but could not fully capitalize on it as Mitchell fought back to even ground and even got a little ahead before Mastodon reasserted control. Mitchell would hit paydirt first with an All Out Blitz, which only served to fire Mastodon up for a good minute or so. Yet during this adrenaline rush, Mastodon could not connect with Rampage, and only seconds after the adrenaline faded, Mitchell hit a second All Out Blitz to score the pinfall and what some would call a minor upset against a man she was 1-3 in her career against.

De'siree Mitchell (1-1) def. The Mastodon (1-1) via Pinfall (All Out Blitz) in 19:10.  Rating: ***

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 5.81, XP + 794.95, minor damage to head and body

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 0.80, XP + 198.74, major damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

FqeSGy6.jpg (6) Nuclear Templeton (0-1, OVR 486)

vs.

(5) Daniel Simmons (0-1, OVR 489) ha8RmaF.jpg

The keyword in this match was “persistence.” Nuclear got out to an early and sizeable advantage, but Simmons persisted in getting his offense in when he could and soon had Nuclear reeling. Nuclear’s persistence allowed him to weather the storm and bust open Simmons with some seated knuckle punches, but follow-up attempts at the Armageddon Lariat would go for naught. Simmons eventually went up top for a Working Man’s Dropkick, but Nuclear avoided and his persistence in trying for the Lariat finally paid off as he connected flush with it. The pin was academic after that, and Templeton has to realize he escaped week two with a win that he had to fight for!

Nuclear Templeton (1-1) def. Daniel Simmons (0-2) via Pinfall (Armageddon Lariat) in 14:30.  Rating: **

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 4.22, XP + 730.44, no notable damage

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.61, minor damage to head and body

GAMMA DIVISION

MZ2VDcB.jpgYICOeYe.jpg (2) Christian Priest (1-0, OVR 521)

vs.

(6) Erick Gibson (0-1, OVR 463) xd5Rq8a.jpglimej5G.jpg

Bob Sinclair: We finish up Gamma Division in our next contest, where Erick Gibson has the unenviable task of facing Christian Priest.

Frankie Garnett: So, Match of the Night incoming in about 14 minutes?

Bob Sinclair: Dare I ask how you figure?

Frankie Garnett: Well, according to what the people in production gave us before the show, Bob, Priest has by far the most Matches of the Night, and his average victory time is about twelve and a half minutes. I mean, eight out of his twenty-nine matches have been Matches of the Night, Bob. The numbers don’t lie.

Bob Sinclair: We’ll see soon enough, Frankie. There’s the bell and we are underway!

ALPHA DIVISION

gGexPKo.jpg (3) Brandy McDonald (1-0, OVR 493)

vs.

(6) Reverend Johnny Gross (0-1, OVR 479) IgD64Oj.jpg

While this started out rather even, the final four minutes of the contest were rather one-sided in favor of the Right Reverend.  It was as if Gross found another gear right around the twelve-minute mark, and he would not let McDonald get in any sustained offense for the remainder of the match. A pair of Come to Jesus attempts went for naught, but a full nelson legsweep was enough to keep the former League Champion down for the count. This would end up being only Gross’ third win in The League by pinfall (compared to his 13 submission wins, tied with Diego Rodriguez for the League lead).

Reverend Johnny Gross (1-1) def. Brandy McDonald (1-1) via Pinfall (full nelson legsweep) in 16:35.  Rating: **

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 4.34, XP + 731.94, no notable damage

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.99, moderate damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

FXyrc6C.jpg (4) George Mastachas (1-0, OVR 477)

vs.

(2) Mel O'Hallister (1-0, OVR 495) e8cytyP.jpg

Winner of this match would emerge from week two with the outright early lead in the Alpha Division. Unfortunately for O’Hallister, it was simply not his night. Mastachas came prepared, utilizing his size and power to keep O’Hallister on the defensive for the majority of the match. In fact, Mastachas was never in any serious jeopardy, hitting several explosion suplexes and really taking the fight to the Irishman. It took eight tries for Mastachas to land a Wrath of Zeus but once he did, O’Hallister stayed down for three. It will be Mastachas atop the Alpha Division heading into week three!

George Mastachas (2-0) def. Mel O'Hallister (1-1) via Pinfall (Wrath of Zeus) in 17:58.  Rating: **

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 4.42, XP + 732.94, no notable damage

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR -0.08, XP + 183.23, minor damage to head and body

BETA DIVISION

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg (2) Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-0, OVR 485)

vs.

(1) Brian Blackfield (1-0, OVR 521) Lp89uMT.jpg

Main event time, and one of the first tests for The Juggernaut in the Beta Division, against a perennial contender in Ouilette. The Frenchman took off to an early advantage, keeping out of reach of Blackfield when he could and peppering his opponent with punches and eye pokes. Blackfield would get some scattered offense in here and there, but Ouilette carried the momentum for the majority of the contest until right around the eleven-minute mark, when he made a critical mistake: he hit Blackfield with Le Petit Mort.

Ouilette was then treated to a first-hand showing of why Brian Blackfield is The Juggernaut. The adrenaline rush came through in a hurry and Blackfield wasted little time in battering Ouilette down. A Tartan Effect soon followed, and the knees landed right on the forehead of Ouilette, stunning him for the count of three. Blackfield pulls victory from the jaws of defeat, being behind the entirety of the match, and now the Beta Division has found out what the two lower divisions already learned: It’s going to take more than one finisher to keep Blackfield down, and good luck getting that second one in….

Brian Blackfield (2-0) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (1-1) via Pinfall (Tartan Effect) in 12:24.  Rating: **

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 4.10, XP + 631.74, minor damage to head

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.93, minor damage to head
