One run to the laundromat later...

THE LEAGUE: SEASON NINE, WEEK SIX

DELTA DIVISION

 xJrKs53.jpg54miFm6.jpg (8) Devil's Delight (1-4, OVR 404)

vs.

(2) Kichi Hida (3-2, OVR 416) 4ZAKk1I.jpg

A striker’s delight (no pun intended) for the opening bout, this was a bit of a sprint as nary a hold was used by Delight. Hida of course wouldn’t know a hold from a hole in the ground, and so her gameplan of “hit the opponent as hard as I can until they stop moving for three seconds” seemed to work well.  A spinning elbow blow that caught Delight flush on the temple did the trick when the Funhouse Stomp didn’t hurt Delight as much as Hida might have liked, and Hida emerges victorious to the surprise of very few, despite interference from Devil’s Angel halfway through the contest..

Kichi Hida (4-2) def. Devil's Delight (1-5) via Pinfall (spinning elbow blow) in 7:06.  Rating: ***

Changes for Kichi Hida:  OVR + 4.92, XP + 523.69, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR + 0.68, XP + 104.74, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

8CXZgHS.jpg (7) Lord Robert Abernathy (1-4, OVR 405)

vs.

(1) Lucas Molina (5-0, OVR 421) wtKjCIc.jpg

Those fans expecting to see a wily veteran take on the hottest newcomer to The League were sadly disappointed.  Abernathy used his experience to utterly dominate Molina, and the veteran notched a submission win with his STF, God Save the Queen. I wonder if anyone’s going to tell him that the Queen is no more…?

Lord Robert Abernathy (2-4) def. Lucas Molina (5-1) via Submission (God Save the Queen) in 7:55.  Rating: *

Changes for Lord Robert Abernathy:  OVR + 2.72, XP + 443.48, no notable damage

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR -0.83, XP + 110.87, no notable damage

GAMMA DIVISION

LTFF6jR.jpg (8) El Tornado (0-5, OVR 425)

vs.

(6) Erick Gibson (2-3, OVR 434) xd5Rq8a.jpglimej5G.jpg

So…how does Erick Gibson follow the biggest win in his short League career?  With a seven-minute squash of El Tornado.  The luchador had very limited offense, and Gibson despite the stamina issues had enough to nail the Terminable Offense on the first try to even his record, and put Tornado at risk of relegation before the first half of the season is even over.

Erick Gibson (3-3) def. El Tornado (0-6) via Pinfall (Terminable Offense) in 7:05.  Rating: *

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 2.68, XP + 509.58, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.82, XP + 127.40, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

N0Y594C.jpg (5) Markus Clay (2-3, OVR 436)

vs.

(8) Terrance Stevens (0-5, OVR 432) ginc2gw.jpg

Stevens’ woes continue.  He had a minor advantage early on, but by four minutes into the contest Clay had wiped it away and took over. The South African barely looked back after that, easily controlling the rest of the match and putting Stevens away with a top rope move that wasn’t the Johannesburg Express.  Much like Tornado a division below him, Stevens is already in danger of clinching relegation this early in the season.

Markus Clay (3-3) def. Terrance Stevens (0-6) via Pinfall (top rope flying clothesline) in 9:48.  Rating: **

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 3.96, XP + 630.12, no notable damage

Changes for Terrance Stevens:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.53. minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION SUBMISSION MATCH

0rDaDU8.jpg (4) Diamond (3-2, OVR 447)

vs.

(7) Indigo Rose (1-4, OVR 428) 2X2r9qf.jpg

Despite the claims from the pundits, Diamond came in at a disadvantage. She didn’t have a decent submission, while Rose had a submission finisher in her pocket as well as other moves. It would be one of these other moves that notched the win, as Diamond struggled to get any offense in the fifth match of the evening that went under ten minutes. Rose gets a desperately-needed win to give herself some space ahead of El Tornado at the bottom of the division.

Indigo Rose (2-4) def. Diamond (3-3) via Submission (stump puller) in 9:05.  Rating: *

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 2.76, XP + 510.60, no notable damage

Changes for Diamond:  OVR -0.84, XP + 127.65, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

dTs8j7q.jpgT127n44.jpg (6) Blood River (2-3, OVR 457)

vs.

(7) Angela Wassermann (1-4, OVR 431) ZCYwviV.jpg

Blink, and you missed this one. No, literally—I looked away for a few seconds to pet the cat and missed the ending of the match.  Yet another squash in a night that seems full of them so far, Wassermann notched a submission victory with a different arm-based submission , giving her a head-to-head advantage over River at the bottom of the Beta Division.

Angela Wassermann (2-4) def. Blood River (2-4) via Submission (arm triangle) in 6:31.  Rating: *

Changes for Angela Wassermann:  OVR + 2.66, XP + 575.73, no notable damage

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.81, XP + 143.93, no notable damage

ALPHA DIVISION

p54rf5F.jpg (3) De'siree Mitchell (3-2, OVR 440)

vs.

(7) Pulsar (1-4, OVR 436) VfA2MW8.jpg

For the first time all night, we’ve had a match go over ten minutes!  It still wasn’t too exciting, as Pulsar made three or four mistakes too many, leaving the door wide open for Mitchell to come through. She led with her shoulder first, as she is wont to do, and an All Out Blitz spelled the end for Pulsar on this occasion. Mitchell remains in the hunt for the Alpha Division lead, and will be watching the main event closely.

De'siree Mitchell (4-2) def. Pulsar (1-5) via Pinfall (All Out Blitz) in 11:07.  Rating: **

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 4.03, XP + 728.00, no notable damage

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR -0.07, XP + 182.00, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

vz0qqDp.jpg (3) Monty Dhillon (3-2, OVR 456)

vs.

(6) Jimmy Anarchy (2-3, OVR 435) V1I70uc.jpg

The first true Match of the Night contender this show, this could realistically have been over by the nine-minute mark. Dhillon had Anarchy dead to rights, but a missed Empire Bomb attempt let Anarchy back into the match, and he came with a vengeance. Blow after strike after blow put Dhillon into Final Step territory, but when Dhillon avoided it and started a comeback of his own, that would be the beginning of the end. A third attempt at the Empire Bomb finally got through, and Dhillon remains in striking distance of Lucas Molina in the Delta Division.

Monty Dhillon (4-2) def. Jimmy Anarchy (2-4) via Pinfall (Empire Bomb) in 12:50.  Rating: ***

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 5.34, XP + 526.67, minor damage to head

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 0.74, XP + 131.67, minor damage to head and body

ALPHA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

e8cytyP.jpg (5) Mel O'Hallister (2-3, OVR 458)

vs.

(8) The Mastodon (1-4, OVR 439) iLs7NYn.jpg

Another solid Match of the Night contender, this was balanced throughout, as O’Hallister played the underdog role to perfection.  He let Mastodon wear himself out, and after both men were in danger of being dropped by their opponent’s best movesx, allowed himself to be propelled outside by a strong charging forearm from mastodon. That would be one of the last moves Mastodon would get in, as a couple of ring post shots preceded a chair-assisted Dream of the Emerald Isle.  No way Mastodon was going to beat that count, and O’Hallister wins a ar to get to an even record on the season.

Mel O'Hallister (3-3) def. The Mastodon (1-5) via Last One Standing (Dream of the Emerald Isle onto a chair) in 15:40.  Rating: ***

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR + 5.55, XP + 792.22, minor damage to head and body

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 0.77, XP + 198.06, moderate damage to head, minor damage to body

DELTA DIVISION

AOP9il0.jpgNldKaI4.jpg (4) Christian Priest (3-2, OVR 469)

vs.

(5) Sterling Silver (2-3, OVR 444) va4qjuU.jpg

Bob Sinclair: It’s rare to see a Delta Division match this far down the card, now that Brian Blackfield has moved on, that’s where we find ourselves now. It’s a familiar position for Sterling Silver, to be the David against Goliaths—in this case, a slightly smaller Goliath named Christian Priest.

Frankie Garnett: Silver struggled last season to finish in the upper half of Delta, Bob. With the new talent coming in like Hida and Molina, and Dhillon and Priest looking to make deep runs, what hope does she have of cracking the top 4, let alone earning promotion?

Bob Sinclair: A win here, Frankie, and she’ll have tiebreaker over Priest at 3-3, which would put her into fourth.

Frankie Garnett: Pffft, details.

Bob Sinclair: There will be more details to come in what should be a sprint of a contest. The bell sounds and we are underway with our tenth match of the evening!

Bob Sinclair: Silver wasn’t thinking about a win there, she just wanted to get into Priest’s head a little, make him exert the exyta effort to get out of the cover.

Frankie Garnett: And why would you be doing that? You should be focused on winning, not on some psychological battle.

Bob Sinclair: Well, Frankie, half of this game is ninety percent mental.

Frankie Garnett: …who the heck ever said that, Yogi Bear?

Bob Sinclair:  ….

Bob Sinclair: We’ve seen that end a few matches this season; Silver might have stolen this one if Priest hadn’t moved out of the way!

Frankie Garnett: What I want to know, Bob, is what Pastor Abe Richards is doing out here. He hasn’t made much of an impact as Priest’s manager, surely that’s a drain on the church’s coffers!

Bob Sinclair: Well, Frankie, someone needs to guard the offering plate from you during matches.

Frankie Garnett: True, I guess…hey, wait a minute!

Frankie Garnett: If she dies, she dies.

Bob Sinclair: That’s cold, even for you.

Frankie Garnett: Oh, like you don’t appreciate good movie quotes.

Bob Sinclair: I could argue that Balboa IV wasn’t a good movie, but I digress….

Frankie Garnett: How is that—oh, never mind, she tapped. I’ll save that question for another time.

Bob Sinclair: This one could have gone either way, folks, but it’ll go down as a victory for Christian Priest by submission here tonight!

Christian Priest (4-2) def. Sterling Silver (2-4) via Submission (Martyrdom) in 12:31.  Rating: ****

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 6.53, XP + 667.01, minor damage to head

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 1.55, XP + 241.75, minor damage to head and body

This was the Match of the Night (5 [2 this season] for Christian Priest, 2 [1 this season] for Sterling Silver)

BETA DIVISION

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg (2) Jean-Paul Ouilette (4-1, OVR 458)

vs.

(4) Reverend Johnny Gross (3-2, OVR 442) IgD64Oj.jpg

An obvious step down from the previous match, this was an average but competitive match.  Ouilette had an early advantage but could not capitalize, while Gross managed to time his signature into finisher combination perfectly. Cecile Corine could only watch helplessly as Ouilette was forced to tap, opening the door for the Beta Division leader to widen the gap atop the standings.

Reverend Johnny Gross (4-2) def. Jean-Paul Ouilette (4-2) via Submission (Come to Jesus) in 13:40.  Rating: **

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 4.17, XP + 632.53, minor damage to head

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR -0.07, XP + 158.13, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

giFlbJV.jpg (1) Yoshii Nakamatsu (4-1, OVR 453)

vs.

(3) Diego Rodriguez (4-1, OVR 452) 9wxABJw.jpg

No real surprises here.  A submission specialist was always going to struggle in a Table match, and Nakamatsu didn’t let Rodriguez have a chance to use the table to his advantage. So it came without any sort of shock factor when Nakamatsu put Rodriguez through a table with a DDT to maintain a share of the Gamma Division lead.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (5-1) def. Diego Rodriguez (4-2) via Table Break (DDT) in 13:00.  Rating: **

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 4.14, XP + 559.18, no notable damage

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.79, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

OOiJTFx.jpg (6) Big Scott Weathers (2-3, OVR 451)

vs.

(4) Brandy McDonald (3-2, OVR 463) TxXkh5U.jpg

Not a terrible match, but not very exciting either, this one was close throughout. Nothing real flashy, which given McDonald is a bit of a surprise, but in the end the League Champion hit her finisher on the second attempt to score the victory and stay within striking distance in the top flight.

Brandy McDonald (4-2) def. Big Scott Weathers (2-4) via Pinfall (Brandy With a Twist) in 16:16.  Rating: **

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 4.32, XP + 731.71, minor damage to head

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.93, moderate damage to head

BETA DIVISION TABLES MATCH

ayWv1C3.jpg (3) Billy Norris (3-2, OVR 450)

vs.

(1) Daniel Simmons (5-0, OVR 461) ha8RmaF.jpg

More memorable for the ending sequence than the match itself. After all, how many times can you say that jumping from the top rope to sit on a man’s chest was the predecessor to grabbing a table and DDTing him through it?  Norris throws a spanner into Simmons’ win streak, and opens up the division to the rest of the field with one well-timed drop through a table!

Billy Norris (4-2) def. Daniel Simmons (5-1) via Table Break (DDT) in 10:55.  Rating: **

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR + 4.02, XP + 630.81, no notable damage

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.70, minor damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

RdUenQh.jpg (2) Brian Blackfield (4-1, OVR 486)

vs.

(5) Jun Onoo (2-3, OVR 442) zTBxNBX.jpg

One of the biggest questions coming into week six was how Brian Blackfield would rebound from his first career League defeat.  His answer was to put together a Match of the Night contender, going toe-to-toe with Onoo for ten minutes. Then, Blackfield kicked it up just a hair. A Tartan Effect only netted a one count, but a discus punch followed up by the Highland’s Wrath would be enough. Blackfield stops the skid from getting any worse, and maintains pace with Nakamatsu atop the Gamma Division.

Brian Blackfield (5-1) def. Jun Onoo (2-4) via Submission (Highland’s Wrath) in 11:01.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 5.21, XP + 604.59, no notable damage

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR + 0.72, XP + 151.15, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION LAST ONE STANDING MATCH

FqeSGy6.jpg (1) Nuclear Templeton (4-1, OVR 456)

vs.

(2) George Mastachas (4-1, OVR 448) hlph25Q.jpg

Winner of our main event would have sole possession of the Alpha Division lead. The loser would be in a three-way tie at 4-2.

This was a good, close bout that needed just a touch more to be the Match of the Night.  Templeton had the early advantage, and indeed kept it throughout the majority of the match, but Mastachas gave as good as he got.  Templeton landed the first big shot, a Tactical Nuke that staggered Mastachas. A spinning elbow blow followed, but Mastachas managed to get up at 9 to beat the count. An Armageddon Lariat went for naught, and Mastachas found a counter with an explosion suplex. Nuclear landed almost on the crown of his head, and only barely failed to beat the ten count—he was up about a quarter of a second too late despite wobbly legs. Mastachas claims control of the Alpha Division, but the race is far from over as week six draws to a close….

George Mastachas (5-1) def. Nuclear Templeton (4-2) via Last One Standing (explosion suplex) in 16:44.  Rating: ***

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 5.63, XP + 793.05, minor damage to head

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR + 0.78, XP + 198.26, minor damage to head

In a dark, grimy gym we can see Nuclear Templeton throwing slow, deliberate haymakers at a lumpy punchbag that makes strange noises every time one of the monstrous strikes lands.... as we get a closer look it becomes clear that the punchbag has a couple of heads poking out the top of it, while in the background there are some shady figures we can't quite make out.  As Nuclear tirelessly tries to punch himself out, he eventually walks away when one of hte figures waves him off and the two headed human punchbag is dropped heavily to the floor.....

A list of names has been given, and passed on to The League....

I have training PMs from almost everyone already and it’s only Monday. Which means I may try to get ahead of schedule (since I am running three shows in two weeks here) and get most of week seven done tonight.

Will be updating my database after dinner, but in case I do get an early jump, my predictions:

ALPHA: Brandy (sorry Nuclear, she’s 2-0 against you!), Mitchell, Weathers, Mastodon

BETA: Ouilette, Simmons, Gross, Wassermann

GAMMA: Blackfield, Nakamatsu, Onoo, Tornado

DELTA: Priest, Dhillon, Molina, Abernathy

This is me as of about an hour ago.

Yes, the stairs broke underneath me as I was coming home from work.

Yes, I am as okay as I can be, scrapes, a scratch and heavily wounded pride aside.

Week 7 is all but done, just one match to run and flesh out the MOTN, but there will be a delay before TTT/Week 8 for…well, obvious reasons. That’ll push the rest of the schedule back some and into my planned work vacation in May. But that’s fine, I can live with that.

I’ll update the table of contents when I post the show this weekend with expected dates and the like. I’d delay this week’s show but most of it is already done, so I don’t have to do too much beforehand.

Just giving y’all a heads up that I’m delaying things for a legit reason, just to make sure there aren’t any lingering effects or I did worse to myself than I think I did.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON NINE, WEEK SEVEN

DELTA DIVISION

 va4qjuU.jpg (6) Sterling Silver (2-4, OVR 445)

vs.

(5) Lord Robert Abernathy (2-4, OVR 408) 8CXZgHS.jpg

The opening contest this week saw Abernathy attempting to keep the luchadora grounded, but to limited success as Silver managed to pull off a lot of offense from the turnbuckles. One such instance saw counter after counter while Silver was perched on the ropes for close to a minute before finally leaping off and hitting a missile dropkick despite Abernathy shaking the ropes three times and rushing her twice. In the end, it wasn’t Silver’s 450 splash that did the trick, but almost as if goading one of the Delta Division’s newcomers, it was a double-footed stomp off the top that scored the pin for Silver, allowing her to end the first half of the season with a little momentum.

Sterling Silver (3-4) def. Lord Robert Abernathy (2-5) via Pinfall (top rope double footed stomp) in 14:25.  Rating: **

Changes for Sterling Silver:  OVR + 4.22, XP + 486.92, minor damage to head

Changes for Lord Robert Abernathy:  OVR -0.07, XP + 121.73, minor damage to body

BETA DIVISION EUROPEAN RULES MATCH

 ZCYwviV.jpg (6) Angela Wassermann (2-4, OVR 434)

vs.

(8) Terrance Stevens (0-6, OVR 432) ginc2gw.jpg

Bob Sinclair: We now go to the Beta Division, and the rarest type of Match in The League historically, a European Rules style match.

Frankie Garnett: Oh, hell, we’re having an hour-long match as the second match of the show? With these two losers? Who books this stuff anyway?

Bob Sinclair: …anyway, the format should play better into Wassermann’s strengths; being a former MMA fighter she’s used to the five-minute round format. The rest of The League…maybe not so much.

Frankie Garnett: Still think this is stupid as the second match on the card, Bob.

Bob Sinclair: I’m not the one to complain to, Frankie, as the bell sounds and the first round is underway!

Bob Sinclair: Stevens had more offense, but Wassermann had the more effective offense.  Stevens needs to get back in this in a hurry, of Wassermann’s going to get the first fall as soon as the next round, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: And I’m telling you, Bob, he’s luring her into a trap. It’s just taking longer than he planned, I think.

Bob Sinclair: You just keep saying that, Frankie.

Bob Sinclair: Wassermann nearly had one there with that figure four variant, but to Stevens’ credit he got out of it and managed to hold on until the end of the round.

Frankie Garnett: Yeah, okay, I don’t think that was part of his plan, Bob. Though he’s starting to be more of a threat to her now—wasn’t Wassermann known for never doing well in the later rounds of a fight?

Bob Sinclair: Indeed. Despite holding a championship, Wassermann traditionally struggled in the so-called “championship rounds”, namely the fourth and fifth. And seeing as this match can go seven, eight, or more rounds, she needs to put away Stevens now before it gets too much later.

Frankie Garnett: You know, I take it back. This was totally a part of his plan!

Bob Sinclair: I should have guessed…

Frankie Garnett: Oh, now THIS is brilliant!

Bob Sinclair: It’s underhanded, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: And that’s why it’s so brilliant! Stevens knows the loophole in European Rules, and he’s looking to take advantage of it right here!

Bob Sinclair: For our viewers not necessarily in the know, Frankie’s referring to the fact that if a countout or disqualification happens in a European Rules match, the match ends immediately then and there, regardless of the current fall count. Stevens hitting his superkick on the outside may stun Wassermann enough that she isn’t getting back in the ring before the count of ten!

Frankie Garnett: The ref’s already at eight, and she hasn’t moved at all, Bob!

Bob Sinclair:  The ref hits nine, and Wassermann is barely beginning to stir, there’s no way she’s getting up by…and there’s the ten! The ref calls for the bell and as Stevens basks in the jeers and catcalls from the fans here in The Aerie, the record books will show that he wins a European Rules match by countout!

Frankie Garnett: It’s like I said, Bob. All part of a greater plan!

Terrance Stevens (1-6) def. Angela Wassermann (2-5) via Countout (Maple Leaf Meltdown) in 28:42.  Rating: ****

DELTA DIVISION

4ZAKk1I.jpg (2) Kichi Hida (4-2, OVR 421)

  1. vs.

(1) Lucas Molina (5-1, OVR 420) wtKjCIc.jpg

After the lat match, this was going to be a bit of a letdown in all likelihood.  If not for a string of offense from Hida about halfway through, this would have been a squash. Molina was never in danger and the technical submission—because Hida refused to tap—came just past eight minutes into the contest.

Lucas Molina (6-1) def. Kichi Hida (4-3) via Submission (Molina Bodylock) in 8:02.  Rating: **

Changes for Lucas Molina:  OVR + 3.86, XP + 483.86, no notable damage

DELTA DIVISION CAGE MATCH

vz0qqDp.jpg (3) Monty Dhillon (4-2, OVR 461)

vs.

(8) Devil's Delight (1-5, OVR 404) 54miFm6.jpg

This match was set as part of Croquemitaine’s season prediction win in Season 8. So for one of his two gimmick matches in Season Nine, he elected to neutralize Delight’s biggest advantage—her sister. It worked to perfection, as Delight never really threatened him. This was over before seven minutes had elapsed, thanks to a ring-shaking Empire Bomb.

Monty Dhillon (5-2) def. Devil's Delight (1-6) via Cage Escape (Empire Bomb) in 6:41.  Rating: **

Changes for Monty Dhillon:  OVR + 3.78, XP + 483.21, no notable damage

Changes for Devil's Delight:  OVR + 0.60, XP + 120.80, minor damage to body

GAMMA DIVISION

 9wxABJw.jpg (3) Diego Rodriguez (4-2, OVR 452)

vs.

(8) El Tornado (0-6, OVR 424) LTFF6jR.jpg

Nothing much to write home about here. Tornado had some offense but nowhere near enough, as Rodriguez easily applies the submission and continues Tornado’s woes in Season Nine.

Diego Rodriguez (5-2) def. El Tornado (0-7) via Submission (Harmony of Dissonance) in 9:56.  Rating: **

Changes for Diego Rodriguez:  OVR + 3.96, XP + 557.48, no notable damage

Changes for El Tornado:  OVR -0.07, XP + 139.37, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

iLs7NYn.jpg (8) The Mastodon (1-5, OVR 440)

vs.

(7) Pulsar (1-5, OVR 436) VfA2MW8.jpg

The fight to escape the Alpha Division’s basement was the only other true Match of the Night contender on the card.  The size difference was nothing Pulsar backed down from, as he let Mastodon wear himself down while taking to the skies on multiple occasions, at one point hitting a picture perfect moonsault for two and a half. Undaunted, a flying clothesline dropped Mastodon again, and once more Pulsar went to the top and this time, on his third attempt, got off—and landed—the Zodiac Implosion.

And in the process triggered Mastodon’s adrenaline rush.

The next ninety seconds were filled with Mastodon beating Pulsar down, sapping the luchador’s momentum, and at the very end of it a Rampage landed (on his fourth attempt of the match) to put the luchador down for the three count.  Mastodon still has work to do to escape relegation, but he knows that at least for the first half, he’s not ending up on the absolute bottom of the division.

The Mastodon (2-5) def. Pulsar (1-6) via Pinfall (Rampage) in 17:08.  Rating: ****

Changes for The Mastodon:  OVR + 6.94, XP + 854.39, minor damage to head and body

Changes for Pulsar:  OVR + 1.65, XP + 213.60, moderate damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

 zTBxNBX.jpg (6) Jun Onoo (2-4, OVR 443)

vs.

(5) Erick Gibson (3-3, OVR 437) xd5Rq8a.jpglimej5G.jpg

Gibson seems to have been slacking off on his cardio in recent weeks. The win over Blackfield has had him easing up a bit, and as a result he was totally gassed just six minutes into this contest.  To be fair, Onoo lasted about two minutes longer before he too was blown up, but Gibson being exhausted for longer would prove to be the deciding factor. Not even Karen McClure interference would help Gibson in the end, as he fell victim to an IMPACT Driver a short time after the ten-minute mark.

Jun Onoo (3-4) def. Erick Gibson (3-4) via Pinfall (IMPACT Driver) in 13:23.  Rating: ***

Changes for Jun Onoo:  OVR + 5.38, XP + 606.00, minor damage to head

Changes for Erick Gibson:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 151.50, minor damage to head and body

GAMMA DIVISION

 2X2r9qf.jpg (7) Indigo Rose (2-4, OVR 431)

vs.

(2) Yoshii Nakamatsu (5-1, OVR 457) giFlbJV.jpg

Rose may have come in to this match looking like a clear-cut lock to demote a second time in two seasons, but she still gave Nakamatsu all he could handle. Her focus was on the legs of her opponent, looking to perhaps weaken him some for the Vite d’Indaco, but Nakamatsu refused to go quietly into the night, hitting back with his arsenal of stiff strikes and heavy drops. A powerful DDT might have stunned Rose, but she countered the attempt at the running knee into a drop toe hold, and turned it into an STF. Critics say if she had managed to lock in her inverted version, her Vite d’Indaco, she would have won the match right then and there. However, Nakamatus fought his way out of it and barely a minute later connected with the Emperor’s Fall to score the victory. Rose may not have been successful tonight but she certainly looked like it could have gone her way.

Yoshii Nakamatsu (6-1) def. Indigo Rose (2-5) via Pinfall (Emperor’s Fall) in 13:59.  Rating: ***

Changes for Yoshii Nakamatsu:  OVR + 5.43, XP + 606.36, minor damage to legs

Changes for Indigo Rose:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 151.59, minor damage to head

DELTA DIVISION

V1I70uc.jpg (7) Jimmy Anarchy (2-4, OVR 436)

vs.

(4) Christian Priest (4-2, OVR 475) NldKaI4.jpgAOP9il0.jpg

The author is admittedly confused as to why Maven Deltzer, of the acclaimed Grappling Viewer newsletter, bumped this up to a three-star match. The author’s best guess is that Deltzer wanted to give Anarchy credit for taking a hammerlock powerbomb, a double underhook powerbomb, and a second hammerlock powerbomb, all in a row and then still had the wherewithal to avoid Canonized. Anarchy would not be able to avoid Judgement, though, and Priest rolls on in decisive fashion to open the second half of the card.

Christian Priest (5-2) def. Jimmy Anarchy (2-5) via Pinfall (Judgement) in 11:58.  Rating: ***

Changes for Christian Priest:  OVR + 5.28, XP + 526.22, no notable damage

Changes for Jimmy Anarchy:  OVR + 0.73, XP + 131.56, minor damage to head and body

BETA DIVISION

IgD64Oj.jpg (3) Reverend Johnny Gross (4-2, OVR 446)

vs.

(2) Billy Norris (4-2, OVR 454) ayWv1C3.jpg

This one really was never in doubt. Norris couldn’t even get Gross into range for his Boomerang DDT, while the Right Reverend had no such issues, putting Norris away on the first attempt at Come to Jesus (when a brainbuster to an already bleeding opponent didn’t do the trick, that is).

Reverend Johnny Gross (5-2) def. Billy Norris (4-3) via Submission (Come to Jesus) in 13:41.  Rating: **

Changes for Reverend Johnny Gross:  OVR + 4.18, XP + 632.54, no notable damage

Changes for Billy Norris:  OVR -0.07, XP + 158.13, minor damage to head

BETA DIVISION

ha8RmaF.jpg (1) Daniel Simmons (5-1, OVR 461)

vs.

(5) Markus Clay (3-3, OVR 440) N0Y594C.jpg

Simmons was so focused on the previous match, seeing who would win the battle for second in the division, that he was slow starting out of the gate against Clay. In fact, for a time Clay had the advantage, which lasted until he crashed and burned on the Johannesburg Express.  This let Simmons back into it, and a string of well-timed offense later, Simmons applied the ankle lock for the submission victory and to maintain the best record in the Beta Division at the hallway point.

Daniel Simmons (6-1) def. Markus Clay (3-4) via Submission (Quitting Time) in 15:19.  Rating: ***

Changes for Daniel Simmons:  OVR + 5.52, XP + 686.35, moderate damage to head

Changes for Markus Clay:  OVR + 0.77, XP + 171.59, no notable damage

BETA DIVISION

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpg (4) Jean-Paul Ouilette (4-2, OVR 458)

vs.

(7) Blood River (2-4, OVR 456) T127n44.jpgdTs8j7q.jpg

Staying in the Beta Division, River just never got out of the blocks until late, and by then he’d taken too much damage to mount a comeback.  A strong knife edge chop into Le Petit Mort did the trick for Ouilette, who remains a threat in the Beta Division to start the second half.

Jean-Paul Ouilette (5-2) def. Blood River (2-5) via Pinfall (Le Petit mort) in 10:29.  Rating: **

Changes for Jean-Paul Ouilette:  OVR + 3.99, XP + 630.54, no notable damage

Changes for Blood River:  OVR -0.07, XP + 157.64, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

OOiJTFx.jpg (6) Big Scott Weathers (2-4, OVR 451)

vs.

(5) Mel O'Hallister (3-3, OVR 463) e8cytyP.jpg

Not too much to write about here either. This match was more notable for the finish than anything else.  Despite O’Hallister’s best attempts, even he couldn’t overcome two low blows in quick succession, even if the first was missed by the official beforehand.

Big Scott Weathers (3-4) def. Mel O'Hallister (3-4) via Pinfall (low blow) in 15:49.  Rating: **

Changes for Big Scott Weathers:  OVR + 4.30, XP + 731.39, no notable damage

Changes for Mel O'Hallister:  OVR -0.08, XP + 182.85, minor damage to body

ALPHA DIVISION

hlph25Q.jpg (1) George Mastachas (5-1, OVR 454)

vs.

(3) De'siree Mitchell (4-2, OVR 444) p54rf5F.jpg

The first of two matches at the end of the card in the upper half of the top flight, this was a decent bout that went back and forth throughout the entirety of the nearly fourteen minutes it ran.  Despite an early advantage, Mastachas was not able to attempt his finisher, while Mitchell only needed a single shot to hit hers.  Three seconds later, Mitchell sends a shockwave through the upper ranks of the Alpha Division. The winner of the next match would join both of them at 5-2 to end the first half of the season.

De'siree Mitchell (5-2) def. George Mastachas (5-2) via Pinfall (All Out Blitz) in 13:48.  Rating: ***

Changes for De'siree Mitchell:  OVR + 5.41, XP + 790.76, no notable damage

Changes for George Mastachas:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 197.69, minor damage to head

ALPHA DIVISION

TxXkh5U.jpg (4) Brandy McDonald (4-2, OVR 467)

vs.

(2) Nuclear Templeton (4-2, OVR 457) FqeSGy6.jpg

Both wrestlers came in ready to fight. McDonald, to her credit, knew Nuclear was going to hit her with everything but the kitchen sink—because this wasn’t a hardcore match—and looked resigned to the fact.  Nuclear just looked mad and didn’t seem to care that McDonald was undefeated against him last season.  While it went back and forth, Nuclear’s one-dimensional arsenal seemed to hamper the flow of the match, dragging it down a star. Nuclear had several chances to win, getting closer to succeeding each time, but it was McDonald, who seemed to throw Nuclear off with some sort of submission hold attempt that she couldn’t lock in. After one such failure, Nuclear got back up and walked right into a Brandy With a Twist. It landed flush, Nuclear was down for the count, and it is McDonald who joins the leaders at 5-2 after the first round of the top flight schedule.

Also, it would not surprise the author if, after this match was run on Tuesday, Nuclear’s “friends” didn’t sabotage the stairs the author climbed on Thursday that collapsed under him. I’m just saying…

Brandy McDonald (5-2) def. Nuclear Templeton (4-3) via Pinfall (Brandy With a Twist) in 18:39.  Rating: **

Changes for Brandy McDonald:  OVR + 4.46, XP + 733.43, minor damage to head

Changes for Nuclear Templeton:  OVR -0.08, XP + 183.36, moderate damage to head

GAMMA DIVISION

0rDaDU8.jpg (4) Diamond (3-3, OVR 446)

vs.

(1) Brian Blackfield (5-1, OVR 491) RdUenQh.jpg

Main event time. Diamond’s best hope would be to hit a Jawjacker and get the pin from that; either of her finishers would simply trigger the adrenaline rush and likely the beginning of the end of the match.  She did at least get the memo, hitting a Jawjacker that netted two and a half. The problem was that her immediate next move was the 24 Karat Kiss.  Blackfield responded in typical Blackfield fashion, which is to say that he immediately tore down his opponent’s momentum and then applied a finisher of his own. In this case, the Highland’s Wrath, which Diamond quickly tapped out to. Blackfield ends the first half atop the Gamma Division and is looking to push into Beta at the rate he’s currently on!

Brian Blackfield (6-1) def. Diamond (3-4) via Submission (Highland’s Wrath) in 13:32.  Rating: ***

Changes for Brian Blackfield:  OVR + 5.39, XP + 606.09, minor damage to head

Changes for Diamond:  OVR + 0.75, XP + 151.52, minor damage to head

Have you ever noticed the increased number of potholes in winter?  Some blame the cold, believing the freezing water getting into cracks, expanding and breaking down all of man's engineering, another minor existential threat to your safety....

The uneven sdewalks?  They never used to be so uneven, as the effects of wear and tear take their toll on the once safe walking surface, making them ever more dangerous....

Stairs?  You thought they were safe to walk up... or down... but out of nowhere one day they just disappear underfoot for no reason that you know of, sending you crashing into an embarassed and expensive hole in the floor....

You think all of these things just happen, but really they are caused by the friends of Nuclear Templeton, sending you suble signals that you are doing something wrong and should correct this immediately.

IMMEDIATELY!

They also moved your coffee table a couple of inches so that you'd bang your toe on it.  Next time, it'll be something far worse.  Maybe switching your milk for a kind you don't like.  Or perhaps getting you the wrong flavour of ice cream.

Think about it. Do what's right for Nuclear, because it's also what is right for you.

First off, Derek—joke’s on you, I don’t own a coffee table. 🤪 (Nor can I really have ice cream anymore, but I digress…)

Anyways, updates.

Physically, I’m about as well as I can be, some slight preexisting shoulder issues aside that just got a bit more agitated with this incident. That and the abrasions starting to itch as they heal over. Mildly annoying, lol.

Mentally…I’m still leery of using these steps twice a day, even after I have to force myself to use them. So that’s a thing. I can’t even bring myself to crack a joke at that like every well-trained millennial does to downplay their anxiety and other issues. And it’s only the stairs in my apartment complex. Stuff at work, or in public? No issue. At home? I literally have not been able to force myself to leave the apartment when my roommate is not home just in the event it happens again. So…yeah.

The other bit I will not touch on again after this mention is going to take a while to go through, so there’s no point in waiting now when it won’t be relevant for a while yet.

So that brings us to TTT. I plan to start running matches this weekend so that I’m ready to post the morning of the 15th on the east coast of the US. But I can’t run matches if I don’t know teams, right? So by a random draw, the twenty characters not already committed have been given partners, and here are the teams for Season Nine’s Tag Team Turmoil:

Defending Champions: Brandy McDonald and Diamond

Defending Finalists: Christian Priest and Reverend Johnny Gross

Jean-Paul Ouilette and Monty Dhillon

Brian Blackfield and Lucas Molina

Kichi Hida and Yoshii Nakamatsu

De’siree Mitchell and Nuclear Templeton

Blood River and Erick Gibson

Mel O’Hallister and Sterling Silver

Jun Onoo and Terrance Stevens

Indigo Rose and Markus Clay

Billy Norris and Pulsar

Diego Rodriguez and George Mastachas

Angela Wassermann and Daniel Simmons

Devil’s Delight and Lord Robert Abernathy

El Tornado and The Mastodon

Big Scott Weathers and Jimmy Anarchy

Actual matchups will be decided right before actually running the matches each round so there is no pre-defined bracket to pick. (Besides, TTT predictions don’t count anyway!)

So I’m finally going to try to get us back on track to finish the season. Let’s see how well the attempt goes.

Folks, I have just seen a summary line I’ve never seen before, and that came as a result of what I’m sure will be the absolute fastest 2/3 falls match one will ever see.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all…

Nuclear counted out via fast count then DQ'd for assaulting the Ref in a 00:16 sec classic?

It wouldn’t be a DQ or count out and still be a true 2/3 falls match. Recall back to the European Rules bout a show or two ago that ended after a count out on the first fall. If someone got DQed or counted out (or stopped for blood loss) the match ends right there, full stop. Y’all’s theories of Nuclear being counted out and then DQed because he’s angry simply cannot be in this instance, hilarious though the mental visuals may be.

All I’ll say is that this was a legit, “official” 2/3 falls bout that ended with two pinfalls, and let the surprise show up on its own during the show. Feel free to speculate as to how quick this match actually is, and know that I will be including the full match transcript when that point in the show comes for posterity’s sake. (Otherwise who would believe me, kinda like with the whole stairs thing?)

Speaking of, I’m hoping to finish running matches tonight before/during Dynamite. My computer hadn’t been used in a few weeks so it was running slow due to downloading updates. Hoping tonight I have no such issues and matches go a bit quicker/not nearly lock up the machine in the process.

THE LEAGUE (FINALLY) PRESENTS: TAG TEAM TURMOIL

OPENING ROUND MATCH

AOP9il0.jpgNldKaI4.jpgIgD64Oj.jpg

Christian Priest & Reverend Johnny Gross

vs.

Jun Onoo & Terrance Stevens

zTBxNBX.jpgginc2gw.jpg

Last season’s runners-up in Tag Team Turmoil came out of the gates swinging to start this season’s tournament. The deciding factor in the first fall was timely interference from Pastor Abe Lawrence, who has been a surprising non-factor so far during the season, as he tripped up Onoo who was looking for a chop block.  Priest made the tag to Gross, and two minutes later got the submission via Come to Jesus to put his side up a fall.  It only took nine more minutes for them to earn the second fall, and thus the win, as Priest laid out a bloodied Stevens with a vile lariat. Just like that, Priest and Gross move on to the quarterfinals in dominant fashion.

Christian Priest/Reverend Johnny Gross def. Jun Onoo/Terrance Stevens, two falls to none, in 22:13. Rating: **

Fall 1: Gross submitted Onoo (Come to Jesus), 13:00

Fall 2: Priest pinned Stevens (Canonized), 22:13

OPENING ROUND MATCH

p54rf5F.jpgFqeSGy6.jpg

De’siree Mitchell & Nuclear Templeton

vs.

Angela Wassermann & Daniel Simmons

ZCYwviV.jpgha8RmaF.jpg

In what would go down as one of the best matches of the entire tournament, the first fall went to Nuclear, who submitted Simmons with a Radiation Leak just shy of twenty-three minutes into the contest.  This seemed to simply light a fire under Simmons, who gained the fall right back with a spinning elbow blow less than ninety seconds later.

Entering the third fall, Nuclear stayed in the ring despite Mitchell clamoring for the tag. It wasn’t until Simmons narrowly missed hitting a Blue Collar Driver before Templeton reluctantly tagged out to Mitchell.  Mitchell and Simmons traded shots, but when Simmons countered an All Out Blitz with another spinning elbow blow that knocked Mitchell out cold, not even Templeton could get through Wassermann and to the far side of the ring to break the pin up in time.  It may be considered a minor upset given just how much fresher Nuclear and Mitchell were after the first fall, but the two Beta Division competitors take two falls in five and a half minutes to storm into the second round!

Daniel Simmons/Angela Wassermann def. De’siree Mitchell/Nuclear Templeton, two falls to one, in 28:18. Rating: ****

Fall 1: Nuclear submitted Simmons (Radiation Leak), 22:43

Fall 2: Simmons pinned Templeton (spinning elbow blow), 24:00

Fall 3: Simmons pinned Mitchell (spinning elbow blow), 28:18

OPENING ROUND MATCH

Blood River & Erick Gibson

vs.

Big Scott Weathers & Jimmy Anarchy

OOiJTFx.jpgV1I70uc.jpg

Most of the action happened in the closing five minutes of this match.  It started with Gibson literally walking into a Final Step from Anarchy, deciding the first fall.  Gibson was able to make the tag a minute later to get out of harm’s way, letting River who was fresher by far get into the thick of things.  This paid off with a slingshot moonsault on Anarchy that netted three, and the match was suddenly tied up at a fall apiece. The match was then just as suddenly untied and decided when River missed a slingshot senton fifteen seconds later, Anarchy scrambled into a cover (and secretly held the tights), and a gassed-out Gibson couldn’t make it in time to break up the pin.  The two biggest cheaters in The League advance to the quarterfinals with a sudden victory!

Jimmy Anarchy/Big Scott Weathers def. Blood River/Erick Gibson two falls to one, in 24:43.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Anarchy pinned Gibson (Final Step), 20:07

Fall 2: River pinned Anarchy (slingshot moonsault), 24:23

Fall 3: Anarchy pinned River (missed slingshot senton bomb), 24:43

OPENING ROUND MATCH

TxXkh5U.jpg0rDaDU8.jpg

Brandy McDonald & Diamond

vs.

Diego Rodriguez & George Mastachas

9wxABJw.jpghlph25Q.jpg

Unlike their opponents in the finals of last season’s tag tournament, Brandy and Diamond had to fight this match mostly from behind. Especially considering Rodriguez stole an early pinfall with a full nelson legsweep before five minutes had even elapsed. Already on the brink of elimination and not even double-digits into the contest, Diamond got her head back in the game and began to grind out a methodical comeback, eventually getting McDonald in on the action for the first time around ten minutes deep.  The two women would wear down both Rodriguez and Mastachas over the course of the next quarter-hour, while managing to avoid Rodriguez’s submission holds entirely.  Frustrated, Mastachas tagged himself into the contest, and Diamond saw her opportunity to take advantage. A Jawjacker into a 24 Karat Kiss tied the match up just after the 24-minute mark. This seemed to enrage Mastachas, who refused to tag in Rodriguez. It would be his undoing as a second Jawjacker would be enough to keep him down—along with an assist from McDonald to cut off interference—and the defending champions move on after a bit of drama to start their defense.

Diamond/Brandy McDonald def. George Mastachas/Diego Rodriguez two falls to one, in 25:55.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Rodriguez pinned Diamond (full nelson legsweep), 4:14

Fall 2: Diamond pinned Mastachas (24 Karat Kiss), 24:19

Fall 3: Diamond pinned Mastachas (Jawjacker), 25:55

OPENING ROUND MATCH

LTFF6jR.jpgiLs7NYn.jpg

El Tornado & The Mastodon

vs.

Jean-Paul Ouilette & Monty Dhillon

AAdEYyr.jpgZThYhej.jpgvz0qqDp.jpg

This largely turned into a handicap match. By five minutes in, Tornado was having to fight out of Empire Bombs and avoid Le Petite Morts. By the time Mastodon finally got tagged in, at nine minutes into the contest, Tornado had fallen th the floor at ringside and was nowhere near ready to assist his partner. So for the next sixteen minutes, Mastodon largely fought back both Ouilette and Dhillon. A questionable decision came at the twenty-one minute mark, after Dhiollon landed an Empire Bomb only to trigger an adrenaline rush. Mastodon hit Cull the Weak on Dhillon and followed it up by…tagging out to Tornado mid-adrenaline rush. Clearly, tag wrestling is not Mastodon’s forte. But the change in pace was enough to throw Dhillon off as he eventually tagged out to Ouilette. Moments later, Mastodon got back in the match, and it was the size difference that would be the final factor as Mastodon earned two falls in under ninety seconds to send his team into the quarterfinals, with Tornado managing to run interference long enough to keep Dhillon at bay.

The Mastodon/El Tornado def. Jean-Paul Ouilette/Monty Dhillon two falls to none, in 25:15.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Mastodon pinned Ouilette (press powerslam), 23:51

Fall 2: Mastodon pinned Ouilette (Rampage), 25:15

OPENING ROUND MATCH

ayWv1C3.jpgVfA2MW8.jpg

Billy Norris & Pulsar

vs.

Kichi Hida & Yoshii Nakamatsu

4ZAKk1I.jpggiFlbJV.jpg

Hida, seeing Rodriguez score a fall in four minutes to start a bout, decided that she could do better. She did just that, tearing through Norris to score the first fall with Eternal Violence at a hair over three minutes into the contest, without either Nakamatsu or Pulsar having entered the contest yet. Not satisfied with that, she would then score the second pinfall a minute and a half later.  In fact, the author had never seen this summary before: “Essentially just an extended beatdown, this was 266 seconds that really could have been better spent doing something else.” This game continues to surprise even the author at times, and Norris and Pulsar find themselves out of Tag Team Turmoil before they even got into it, as Hida sets an (unofficial) TTT record that is likely to never be surpassed.

Kichi Hida/Yoshii Nakamatsu def. Billy Norris/Pulsar two falls to none, in 4:26.  Rating: *

Fall 1: Hida pins Norris (Eternal Violence), 3:11

Fall 2: Hida pins Norris (Eternal Violence), 4:26

OPENING ROUND MATCH

e8cytyP.jpgva4qjuU.jpg

Mel O’Hallister & Sterling Silver

vs.

Brian Blackfield & Lucas Molina

RdUenQh.jpgwtKjCIc.jpg

After the blitz of the last match, this one seemed more like a match most people would expect to see. Good tag team psychology in the first fall allowed Silver and O’Hallister to keep Blackfield isolated from his partner, and wear him down enough that an implant DDT was enough to score the first fall. Down a fall, it took Blackfield a minute or two to finally create enough space that he could tag in Molina and get some much-needed rest on the apron. Molina would force O’Hallister out of the match, and take advantage of a Sterling Silver mistake by getting the drop on her after a missed springboard senton bomb, evening the match up at a fall apiece.

The final minute and a half of the match was dramatic. Molina had been working over Silver, forcing her to avoid his vaunted Molina Bodylock on multiple occasions, and after several failed attempts she managed to create enough space to tag in O’Hallister, who was chomping at the bit. As she did, though, Blackfield came into the ring and distracted the ref, forcing O’Hallister back onto the apron. An irate Silver kicked Molina in the gut, and landed a second rope flying rana before tagging in O’Hallister. This time the ref saw it, and the Irishman immediately applied his Irish Clover submission. Molina had not moved at all since the rana, and as Blackfield tried to get in the ring, he found hisankle held by Silver, who had sprinted around the ring to run interference.  Unable to break up the hold, Blackfield could only listen as the ref waved off the match and called for the bell, declaring O’Hallister the winner of the fall by technical submission as Molina was not responding.  A controversial finish, but ultimately the right call as Molina had to be stretchered to the backstage area, where he’d regain consciousness a few minutes later with no other visible side effects.

Mel O’Hallister/Sterling Silver def. Brian Blackfield/Lucas Molina, two falls to one, in 27:47.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: O’Hallister pinned Blackfield (implant DDT), 17:17

Fall 2: Molina pinned Silver (missed springboard senton bomb), 21:49

Fall 3: O’Hallister submitted Molina (Irish Clover), 27:47

OPENING ROUND MATCH

Indigo Rose & Markus Clay

vs.

Devil’s Delight & Lord Robert Abernathy

xJrKs53.jpg54miFm6.jpg8CXZgHS.jpg

Rose struck early and often to begin the bout, surprising Abernathy at the six-minute mark with Blood From a Rose that shed managed to hold on to for the pinfall.  Down a fall before ten minutes were up, and staring at a sizable health deficit, Abernathy continued to try to turn the tide on his own without tagging in the person everyone assumed would be the weak link of the team in Devil’s Delight.  When he finally decided to attempt to bring Delight into the match, Rose fought him back towards the center of the ring. It wasn’t until after the nine-minute mark that Delight finally got into the contest. Rose stayed in for another two minutes before finally tagging Clay into the contest to let the cruiserweight and the cruiserweight-turned-poor technical wrester go at it. Clay overwhelmed Delight, and she had to tag out to Abernathy a few minutes later.  Abernathy would slow down Clay’s offense enough that his STF, God Save the Queen, was enough to even the match back up just beyond the twenty-minute mark. After the restart, Clay found a way to get separation and tagged in a fresh Indigo Rose. Abernathy never even seemed to consider tagging in Delight, and the hubris would cost him as Rose’s technical game eventually got Abernathy caught in a stump puller, and that was enough for a submission as Clay knocked Delight off the apron with a running dropkick to prevent the save.

Indigo Rose/Markus Clay def. Lord Robert Abernathy/Devil’s Delight, two falls to one, in 28:21.  Rating: **

Fall 1: Rose pinned Abernathy (Blood From a Rose), 6:04

Fall 2: Abernathy submitted Clay (God Save the Queen), 21:44

Fall 3: Rose submitted Abernathy (stump puller), 28:21

QUARTERFINAL MATCH

Brandy McDonald & Diamond

vs.

Kichi Hida & Yoshii Nakamatsu

4ZAKk1I.jpggiFlbJV.jpg

Before the bell even rang, Nakamatsu made it clear that he wanted to start the match. Japanese-speaking viewers would later report that he clearly told her “I need to feel like I’m pulling mt weight.” He managed to force Diamond to tag out about six minutes in, and held on for three more against McDonald before Hida tagged herself into the contest.  For six minutes, Hida beat down the reigning League Champion, absorbing some of McDonald’s better offense while trying to set McDonald up for a pinning combination. Eventually McDonald fought free to tag in Diamond, who had no better luck against Hida. Hida’s offensive flurry led to a hot tag to McDonald, which finally drove Hida back onto the apron. Thingscontinued apace for about another six minutes before Nakamatsu tagged out with Brandy noticing, and she dropped him with a single arm DDT only to eat Eternal Violence from the legal competitor. First fall to Hida and Nakamatsu at twenty-five minutes in.

Two minutes later, McDonald evened up the match by hitting Hida with Brandy With a Twist. Shortly thereafter, McDonald tagged out to Diamond, Hida tagged out to Nakamatsu, and a Gamma Division clash broke out. Multiple finishers were countered, and in a mirror of earlier, McDonald made the blind tag, and Diamond walked into an Emperor’s Fall. When Nakamatsu learned Diamond wasn’t legal, he turned into a Brandy With a Twist, and Hida got to them a split second too late. The reigning TTT champs move on in an absolute war.

Brandy McDonald/Diamond def. Yoshii Nakamatsu/Kichi Hida, two falls to one, in 33:53.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Hida pinned McDonald (Eternal Violence), 25:35

Fall 2: McDonald pinned Hida (Brandy With a Twist), 27:36

Fall 3: McDonald pinned Nakamatsu (Brandy With a Twist), 33:53

Christian Priest & Reverend Johnny Gross

vs.

Mel O’Hallister & Sterling Silver

e8cytyP.jpgva4qjuU.jpg

The first fall came rather quickly—at least compared to the last match—when O’Hallister locked in the Irish Clover and Silver ran interference on Gross. O’Hallister had it locked in tight, and Priest had no choice but to tap from the center of the ring. Eleven minutes in, and the favorites to make a return to the finals were down a fall. Shortly after the restart, Priest tagged out to Gross, which was desperately needed as O’Hallister looked relatively unharmed at that point.

Griss was essentially fighting a handicap match here, and both his opponents knew it as they wore him down with continuous offense. Both O’Hallister and Silver were willing to avsorb punishment if it ment that they could dish out more to Gross. The strategy proved to be successful, as Gross eventually fell victim to a Dream of the Emerald Isle, and O’Hallister scored the fall to propel his team into the semifinals!

Mel O’Hallister/Sterling Silver def.Reverend Johnny Gross/Christian Priest, two falls to none, in 23:36.  Rating: **

QUARTERFINAL MATCH

Big Scott Weathers & Jimmy Anarchy

vs.

Angela Wassermann & Daniel Simmons

ZCYwviV.jpgha8RmaF.jpg

This turned into a war early, as both teams were evenly matched from the jump. Weathers yielded to Simmons, who tagged out after facing Anarchy, who forced Simmons back in the match before getting Wassermann back in. Weathers talking smack on the apron to both his opponents helped draw Simmons in the ring illegally, and as the ref was pushing Simmons back out Anarchy connected with a Final Step on Wassermann. The pin followed soon after, as Simmons simply couldn’t get back in the ring in time, and the heels were up a fall before twenty minutes had passed.

The second and deciding fall came a few minutes later, after Simmons wearily tagged out to an equally-exhausted Wassermann.  She was unable to assert top control on Weathers, and he in turn laid out Wassermann with Blackout. Anarchy played spoiler, and the dastardly duo finds a way to advance to the semifinals!

Big Scott Weathers/Jimmy Anarchy def. Angela Wassermann/Daniel Simmons, two falls to none, in 24:34.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Anarchy pinned Wassermann (Final Step), 17:44

Fall 2: Weathers pinned Wassermann (Blackout), 24:34

El Tornado & The Mastodon

vs.

Indigo Rose & Markus Clay

2X2r9qf.jpgN0Y594C.jpg

Before the author gets into the match summary, he wishes to express something right up front. The author was wrong in how a game mechanic worked. You’ll see why shortly.

The opening minutes were fairly even, Mastodon’s overwhelming size notwithstanding. Rose and Clay employed guerrilla hit-and-run tactics and managed to hold their own until Tornado was tagged in. That’s when things started getting interesting, as it eventually got to the point where Rose was worn down and facing an equally worn Mastodon. She managed to avoid Cull the Weak, but got sent outside by a hard forearm for her efforts. Mastodon tagged Tornado, who promptly went to the top and connected with a Tornado Splash to the floor. He got back in the ring, and simply waited out the count, as Rose could not make it back in time.  This is where the author was wrong—he thought this would end the match then and there (like what happened in the European Rules match), Instead, it was just a single fall to Tornado and Mastodon, and the match continued once Rose rolled back into the ring.

Several minutes (and a failed Tornado Splash) later, Rose got revenge for the lost fall, and submitted Tornado with her Vite d’Indaco to even the match up at the 27-mintue mark. Soon after the restart, Tornado tagged out to Mastodon, and it took Rose and Clay a few minutes to finally get Mastodon back out of the match. Tornado got the tag, and soon after Clay got the tag for his side, and the two looked like a cruiserweight classic would ensue, But Mastodon tagged in, pwoerbombed Clay nearly through the mat, and tagged Tornado back in, who immediately hit a Tornado Splash. Mastodon knocked Rose clear into the guard rail from the apron, and Tornado picks up the fall to send his team into the semfinals!

El Tornado/The Mastodon def. Indigo Rose/Markus Clay, two falls to one, in 32:28.  Rating: ***

Fall 1: Rose was counted out (Tornado Splash), 25:57

Fall 2: Rose submitted Tornado (Vite d’Indaco), 27:11

Fall 3: Tornado pinned Clay (Tornado Splash), 32:28

Mel O’Hallister & Sterling Silver

vs.

Big Scott Weathers & Jimmy Anarxhy

OOiJTFx.jpgV1I70uc.jpg

Our opening semifinal match saw O’Hallister and Weathers fight to a standstill about four minutes in, and then tag in their respective partners. Silver would get the jump on Anarchy, her aerial offense throwing Jimmy for a bit of a loop before Weathers came back into the contest. Weathers didn’t have much better luck, as Silver put him through his paces until an ill-timed high cross body got countered into a spinebuster. Weathers made the tag to a fresher Anarchy, who only managed about a minute of offense before Silver found some breathing room and tagged in O’Hallister.

It quickly went downhill from there for Anarchy, as O’Hallister fought out of a mounted punch flurry, took to the offensive, and landed an implant DDT that somehow got three despite Weathers having enough time to make the save.  Not even thirty seconds later, O’Hallister hit Dream of the Emerald Isle on a still-woozy Anarchy, and this time knocked Weathers off the apron himself, before making the cover and propelling his team into the finals!

Mel O’Hallister/Sterling Silver def. Jimmy Anarchy/Big Scott Weathers, two falls to none, in 16:40.  Rating: **

Fall 1: Rose pinned Abernathy (Blood From a Rose), 6:04

Fall 2: Abernathy submitted Clay (God Save the Queen), 21:44

Brandy McDonald & Diamond

vs.

El Tornado & The Mastodon

LTFF6jR.jpgiLs7NYn.jpg

The reigning champions had a chance to get to the finals once again, but faced an “opposites attract” team in the form of the behemoth Mastodon and the luchador Tornado. Tornado and Diamond started the contest, and it was Tornado who metaphorically blinked first, tagging out to the larger Mastodon two and a half minutes in. Mastodon would use his size advantage to bully Diamond, until Brandy tagged herself in a minute later. The reigning League Champion showed why she is precisely that, taking apart her Alpha Division rival bit by bit over the following six and a half minutes. She even managed to hit Hang Over at one point, a move she rarely breaks out, before finally demonstrating her new submission finisher, Hair of the Dog, to earn the first fall via tap out.

Mastodon looked to get out of the ring soon after the restart–his adrenaline rush did him no good against submissions–and Tornado was summarily tagged back in about thirty seconds later. McDonald was able to weather the storm–pun intended–for about a minute before tagging the fresher Diamond into the contest. Diamond avoided a running clothesline attempt from Tornado, and the luchador wouldn’t get another chance to do anything in the contest. Diamond controlled the next three minutes, hitting her 24 Karat Kiss and letting Brandy run interference on Mastodon as she scored the second fall and assured her team a second consecutive berth in the finals!

Brandy McDonald/Diamond def. El Tornado/The Mastodon, two falls to none, in 17:19.  Rating: **

Fall 1: Rose pinned Abernathy (Blood From a Rose), 6:04

Fall 2: Abernathy submitted Clay (God Save the Queen), 21:44

TAG TEAM TURMOIL FINALS

TxXkh5U.jpg0rDaDU8.jpg

Brandy McDonald & Diamond

vs.

Mel O’Hallister & Sterling Silver

e8cytyP.jpgva4qjuU.jpg

Bob Sinclair: Welcome back, folks. It’s been a day in real-time since the semi-finals were held, but for you all it’s just been about two minutes, and it’s now time for the finals of Tag Team Turmoil!

Frankie Garnett: We’re going to be here a while. Good thing I stocked up on snacks before I came in the building.

Bob Sinclair: …Really? You’re going to be that uncouth?

Frankie Garnett: Hey, I won’t eat with my mouth open if that helps!

Bob Sinclair: ...moving on… In League history, we’ve never had repeat champions of Tag Team Turmoil. Only one person, The League’s founder, has even won this event twice and that was with two different partners. Tonight, Brandy McDonald and Diamond look to make history, but standing in their way are an unlikely duo–a newly-promoted Alpha Division brawler and a Delta Division luchadora who’s been struggling to find her footing this season.

Frankie Garnett: So…the champs repeat with a seven-fall margin of victory?

Bob Sinclair: I never said that, Frankie. If anything, the champs need to be wary of complacence. They won last season against Christian Priest and Reverend Johnny Gross, but this is a completely different dynamic facing them this time.

Frankie Garnett: And it wasn’t for their semifinal match? They've got this in the bag, Bob!

Bob Sinclair: We’ll find out for certain over the next hour, as both teams head to their respective corners. Senior League official Jacob Smalls calls for the bell, and the finals of Season Nine’s Tag Team Turmoil are underway!

(05:28) Mel O'Hallister looking for the submission here with the Irish Clover!

Bob Sinclair: Diamond looks like she wasn’t expecting this so early, as O’Hallister has it locked in deep! Diamond’s nearly immobile here, she can’t find the leverage to get moving…and probably a smart move on her part, tapping early to minimize the damage she would endure in that hold.

Frankie Garnett: I’m still not convinced that it’s such a good move, Bob. Now you’re fighting from behind and you’re barely five minutes into the match!

Bob Sinclair: We’ll see if the strategy pans out, and if Diamond can get to her corner to tag in the League Champion as the match resumes!

Frankie Garnett: Brandy’s relying on those ropes a lot here, Bob. O’Hallister needs to be more aware of his ring positioning.

Bob Sinclair: I’m certain he knows that. But Brandy’s playing smart defense by not letting O’Hallister have control of the center of the ring. She’s not simply letting O’Hallister have his way.

Frankie Garnett:  True. Darn it, I hate when you have a point.
