NOTBPW: History written in Stone

NOTBPW: The new decade rolls in

NOTBPW.jpg.a2fc2c73e8641b3afabf979c10511fa8.jpg

As the 2020's arrive for the wrestling world, NOTBPW is still shocked by the death of the Stone patriarch a couple years ago, much more than CGC was by George DeColt's death, mostly due to their inability to create new stars in comparison to a rejuvenated CGC that adds Aaron Knight to the returning Jack and Ricky DeColt. They still hold on to their status as #1 in Canada, but other than CGC (a company they're on positive terms currently anyway), NOTBPW and the Canadian wrestling scene are mostly hurt by USPW's wrestling imperialism and will for World Domination.

Three big decisions were taken to protect NOTBPW's prestigeous status and help the company survive these tough times: Firstly, the Canadian championship was rebranded to just the NOTBPW Championship in order to properly convey its status as a premium title in the global wrestling scene. Secondly, the company joined the All-Pacific alliance that TCW and PGHW had formed, allowing them to loan and trade highly talented wrestlers and freshen out some PPV cards. And thirdly, they decided to slowly update their product: In the next three months, the classic, technical "Wrestling as a Sport" presentation would be changed in order for the company to be presented as somewhat of a midpoint between its partners, TCW and PGHW: "East meets West", if you will. This would mean more promos and a bit of a different match structure sometimes but it felt like a necessary way to freshen up what had become "Grapplef*ck matches, sort of like work-rate NYCW", according to Greg Sluchinski.

But there was also a fourth, secret change: Victoria Stone-McFly was to be scapegoated for the company's slight downturn in fortunes. Her, Tamara McFly and Sean McFly were seen as getting increasingly more clout within the "Booking council" that included them, Jeremy Stone, Duane Stone and Eugene Williams. Instead, a small coup took place that meant Duane Stone is getting a leading role, and Johnny Bloodstone would become part of the inner circle, so to speak. This would mean Victoria and Tamara quitting on the spot while Sean McFly would wait until after finishing his product with company ace Cam Vessey.

A tumultuous period for the company became further so, perhaps unnecessarily. Will this new structure save the company or will it be that keeping responsibility within the family to an obsessive degree will have similar results to Alex DeColt's decade in charge of CGC? Only time will tell.

NOTBPW_Henson.jpg.bd7f52251de654cfe1a5d883ab3d7ee8.jpg Plus the yearly Ed Henson Memorial Tag Team Cup

Owner Goals + Dynasty Goals:

Company size must stay at least Medium

Cam Vessey should at least have 71 popularity across Canada

No hiring High Flyers or Psychopaths

+ Need to balance the roster to include more Canadians and fewer Americans

+ No poaching wrestlers from our Allied Companies or breaking the truce with CGC

+ Hiring everyone off of the House of Stone training facility when allowed by Owner Rules

So, I'm back! Basically, I got a summer job and everything went sideways with my routine. The CGC project will continue at one point, and this is not an empty promise... unless I wake up one day and decide I'm not happy with the creative I have planned for that dynasty. Until then, this is a really fun challenge from the mod @Wrestling Machinejust cooked up. Expect this to not be the most active diary even if I manage to keep it going for a while. I just really like doing different stuff and/or promoting in Canada, apparently. Learning things about myself. You'll probably get a roster overview before we begin, or maybe not if I'm too lazy.

I have probably forgotten details and important things, feel free to ask! I hope we all have fun with this.

I have a few questions about the roster, first off are the tag teams finalized yet? Cause I have some ideas on who to throw together. First Ozzie Goldstein and Solomon Gold, also known as Good as Gold! As is Erik strong related to Sam and Alicia strong?

I wish you have more luck than I had with my CWA diary, Canada is always an interesting place in TEW. I'll be following.

CVerse Canada is great, but the CWA itself perhaps the most divisive thing I've seen. No wonder almost every mod removes them.

Thanks for the mod and the support! Playing through this and looking at the data I've been gathering some feedback for the mod thread I will post one of these days.

Some tag teams are pre-existing, and sadly Ozzie is in a team with Flash Savage already. Obviously the Griffin brothers are a team, and Cam Jones with Syd Collier are The Dynamite Express. There's also Jared Johnson and Johnny Bloodstone in The Tap Out Mob.

Surprisingly, Erik Strong is just a guy with that name, no relation.

Excited for you to educate me on another company @AboardTheArk, and to see if I get as invested in the NOTBPW lore as I did in CGC's.

Excited for you to follow along on the journey!

And with that, after I decide on some minutiae, I'm posting the first show in the next few days.

I like CWA. My first TEW game was TEW2020 so probably that's the reason I see it in a different way, but I've read enough about TEW history to understand why most people don't like it.

Out of the loop, what's the problem with CWA?

I'm new to the Canadian CVerse so this isn't an authoritative response but, from what I've read on here, I think the main complaints are that NOTBPW and CGC were pretty popular, it being hard to conceptualise the hybrid of their pretty distinct products, and the fact CWA's emergence gutted the Canadian scene in leaving just one other tiny promotion (which I guess is pretty true to how real world business goes, but a rough adjustment if you've enjoyed playing as the other companies for over a decade).

NOTBPW CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ~ 2020 EPISODE 1

MATCH 1: CLAIRE WINTERS VS NINA CACACE

ClaireWinters.jpg.556c50a3975f8a9e4f2083d38af94b18.jpg VS NinaCacace.jpg.bed6ebaed6679ce2cb7d87900c474a80.jpg

We begin the new decade with a matchup as old as time- the wiley veteran going up against the brash, young shooter. Nina did her best to keep control but Claire was just a beast that couldn't be contained for long, her every strike turning the tide of the contest ever to her favour, to the point where 5 minutes in it was clear she was winning the match. Cacace hit a few big bombs that took Winters off her feet, but she just couldn't string enough offense together, a heel kick ending the match and giving Winters the win in her NOTBPW debut. (8:28)

Rating: 50

MATCH 2: THE CANADIAN BLONDES VS THE GRIFFIN FAMILY

FlashSavage.jpg.3f275d26d5866fe80a06c082afcb12e7.jpg OzzieGoldstein.jpg.277d78a5d6181126d548216035c68a86.jpg VS MarkGriffin.jpg.8f3dd5f5bc69d10507205ff833aff3ce.jpg RobbyGriffin.jpg.9d3c2c59b7f117a4d3df2006cff1d0ea.jpg

Two teams in the business of chasing the dominant Dynamite Express, they fought extremely hard in order to send a message that they belong in the top of the tag division. Mark Griffin dominated with size early on, but when Robby came in with his high-flying offense, the experience of the Blondes shone through, dismantling the young wrestler with tandem offense. Robby showed guts getting to the hot tag, but Mark was essentially outnumbered, the hot tag fizzled out with a close nearfall and the numbers' game led to a Golden Shower for the win. (16:11)

Rating: 57

MATCH 3: DAVID STONE VS DEREK FROST

DavidStone.jpg.49aa0a7f023584c2b023dbad84b14457.jpg VS DerekFrost.jpg.339c47e919883160575966afbb4e3f85.jpg

The next great hope was up against a huge obstacle in Frost, a force unlike anything he'd seen in the dojo. The youngster did the best he could in order to tear down this wall, but he couldn't bring Frost to the mat, or get him off his feet with some high energy offense (that he's still working on, still adding to the Stone mat game). As a result, this soon became an elementary challenge for Frost, who punished the youngster until ending things with a Snow Plow. (9:39).

INTERMISSION: HYPE VIDEOS

Two videos play back to back, hyping up bouts that will take place next week, and those are bouts of interpromotional nature. Firstly, the All-Pacific Champion Joshua Taylor will be defending his belt at Big City Brawl, and NOTBPW is holding a #1 contender's match between two of the brightest young wrestlers in the company, Jared Johnson and Sonny Wildside for the right to face Taylor. And secondly, the Television title will be defended next week, as Shingen Miyazaki is facing PGHW's Reaver, one of the hardest-hitting Americans to ever cross the Pacific Ocean. Tune in for those exciting bouts, and much more!

MATCH 4: Ariel Breaks & Lauren Easter vs The Queen's Court (Deborah Young & Nadia Snow)

ArielBreaks.jpg.6720e6e63e7872e57edb0cb405bd6a4d.jpg LaurenEaster.jpg.b0240761b0663ebf6ee0581597559da3.jpg VS DeborahYoung.jpg.06c5352820c3913fca1f11700f271ec2.jpgNadiaSnow.jpg.0ce0b919045848c520374f29dbc96626.jpg

A huge match for the young Ariel Breaks, perhaps the biggest she's been a part of in her young NOTBPW career, but this is all about the legendary Lauren Easter gunning for the opportunity to become a 6-time Women's Champion as Nadia Snow's Queen's Court has been dominating the division recently. Snow spent most of the match letting the Royal Executioner Deborah Young do most of the work, but as to be expected this strategy can't hold off a top contender forever, and with the help of some well-placed Missile Dropkicks from Ariel, Easter managed to get Young down for the Figure Four Leg Lock, and the win. (14:10)

Rating: 59

Post-Match Promo:

After the match, Easter confronted Nadia saying she's tiring of jumping through hoops for a title shot she has more than earned, but Nadia Snow, irritable and panicked put up one last, if underwhelming, obstacle: The young Jessica Conroy, which Lauren is to face NEXT WEEK, on Championship Wrestling!

Rating: 63

MATCH 5: ERIK STRONG VS MOUNTIE MANN

ErikStrong.jpg.53d12e592fc97fab8e4b23579029460a.jpg VS MountieMann.jpg.b10a5646fb0337a1b79e3674d918460c.jpg

With Shooter Sean Deeley looking on from the ringside area, Erik Strong painted a masterpiece against an extremely tough opponent in Mountie Mann. Despite the fact this match dragged on, Strong was methodical in his limbwork, and never really felt out of control. He tried to send a message to the Champ by going for the Seated Armbar, and that's when Mann really fought back, scratching and clawing and raking his way into his classic stretches, the brutality and efficiency of an almost bygone era in Canadian Wrestling. Strong though has improved a ton not only at being grounded, but also getting to his spots and usual offense from any position. Any mistake from Mann was punished, and the ease with which Erik Strong just went to an Ace Crusher and then the Strong Sault was characteristic. As he was pinning Mountie Mann, he was pointing a finger gun at Sean Deeley, as if officially laying the challenge for Big City Brawl- the mind games between the two only continuing. (18:57)

MAIN EVENT: CAM VESSEY, JARED JOHNSON & JOHNNY BLOODSTONE VS SEAN MCFLY, SOLOMON GOLD & SONNY WILDSIDE

CameronVessey.jpg.c61fa91682cfbb4b3618b6ca590ed00a.jpg JaredJohnson.jpg.3f27f4adc48b33e42fee2ba1f564b338.jpg JohnnyBloodstone_alt1.jpg.49b2f83b2c747ffa41e925673ab9c39c.jpg VS SeanMcFly.jpg.b6338c93f55ab8fcc4fc6b31cb14c346.jpg SolomonGold.jpg.2b1bbfbfef48bf81cd6effa48f9e4239.jpg SonnyWildside.jpg.0159f388e5a6ee474b86a128d7e242c5.jpg

A very lengthy and back and forth main event that was ultimately decided by the experience differential between the two teams. Gold was not quite ready to win a main event match, but he showed he belonged by absorbing some incredible amounts of punishment from Bloodstone. The star of this match however was Sonny Wildside, who was untouchable for big parts of the match, showing Double J that he needs to be at the top of his game next week, and almost pinning the Submission Demon in multiple occasions. But in the end, Cam Vessey found Solomon Gold in the ring and absolutely victimized him with an array of Brainbusters, pinning him with a Vessey Driver II as Sean McFly could only watch. (23:22)

POST-MATCH PROMO:

After the match, Vessey expresses his contempt for McFly, his role as a veteran in the company, and the way he symbolizes a period of the company that has definitively ended. He says that after their battle, only one should remain in NOTBPW. As MVP, as leader, to shape the company in their own image. McFly interrupts to suggest a stipulation so that Vessey can shut up: Their match should be Loser Leaves Town. There's a content sparkle in Vessey's eyes as the two titans of Canadian Wrestling shake on their agreement to end a career at the January PPV.

Woahhh, great show man!

Seems like you wanna push Claire Winters as a legit menace straight from the beginning, reasonable as the women's division needs some mid-uppercarding babyfaces.

Sonny is really solid and I underestimate him a bit initially, could be worth the push especially now that there are only two babyface stars (McFly and Strong).

A strong opening show. I liked how you were able to set up a lot for future shows while only deploying two short promos and a video, and the other thing you're great at that I struggle with is making each match feel different, both in card composition (men's singles, men's tag, six-man, women's singles, women's tag) and how you write about them. Excited for more.

NOTBPW CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTILNG - 2020 EPISODE 2

SEGMENT 1: CAMERON VESSEY OPENS THE SHOW

In a very rare display for NOTBPW, we get an in-ring promo. And to start the show? Unthinkable. But here is Cameron Vessey, his arrogance and disdain pulsating. His promo is short and sweet, first blaming him not wrestling tonight on Sean McFly being too old and broken down, then announcing the fans can vote on the stipulation of the career-deciding match between him and the legend: Steel Cage, 2 out of 3 falls, or I QUIT. You decide! It doesn't matter anyway, there can only be one result.

Rating: 71

MATCH 1: AMBER ALLEN, ARIEL BREAKS & CLAIRE WINTERS VS DEMELZA WADE, LAURA FLAME & NINA CACACE

AmberAllen.jpg.75c2d7764de21a37360004e9dd0bd7a1.jpg ArielBreaks.jpg.5a46fcda81c6d78e949852426b901504.jpg ClaireWinters.jpg.9b4d819b31556813867108db9be8bb89.jpg VS DemelzaWade.jpg.b90a12f9c87e8497512183ae81112532.jpg LauraFlame.jpg.3409b0386339ca6792d60d6a917e80f0.jpg NinaCacace.jpg.7cf3449ab6dc818833cbc0b2ac233cd0.jpg

A match anchored by the veteran Amber Allen, its point was for the youngsters to shine in the usual rapid-fire exchange of 6-wrestler tag matches. In particular, the other shooter of NOTBPW, Laura Flame, shone by being much more polished than Claire Winters in her offense and selling, and by having the whitest-meat babyface in Ariel to bully. Wade and Cacace mostly got beat up, with Amber Allen managing to pin Demelza Wade as Winters and Flame were grappling outside, a Northern Lights Suplex sealing the deal. (14:30)

MATCH 2: NOTBPW TELEVISION TITLE MATCH: SHINGEN MIYAZAKI (C) VS REAVER

ShingenMiyazaki.jpg.97fe19ed48d28fa0ddc32601d6f2540b.jpg NOTBPW_TV.jpg.505495d3d4215f7b4f1af87114f81e13.jpg Reaver.jpg.3f113de8cfaf811174f4179cf70119d8.jpg

This is essentially the crux the All-Pacific alliance has been built upon so far: Midcarders beating midcarders. On their home turf. Thankfully, this IS the workrate-focused company alliance. Solid wrestling is non-negotiable. And these two decided to have the kind of match you don't often see in the land of grapplefests, and just hit each other in the head as hard as possible for 15 minutes. No backing down, no gimmicks, barely even any holds or moves. Until, one lariat brings Reaver to his knees, and it spells the beginning of the end. A few slaps later, and he's out cold. Three seconds, and the match is over. (15:12)

SEGMENT 2: Next Week on Championship Wrestling

The Dynamite Express appear backstage to announce an open challenge for the NOTBPW Tag Team Championships, next week. Anyone can try to take the titles off them, but all they'll manage is give them a day off next Saturday.

Rating: 52

MATCH 3: MARK GRIFFIN VS SHOOTER SEAN DEELEY

MarkGriffin.jpg.16601e5f2687131c27c1c040eb72017e.jpg VS ShooterSeanDeeley.jpg.36b4a2729c16ee6bd033db28fa6aab07.jpg

With Erik Strong quipping alongside the commentary duo, it was the Champ's time to once again show his credentials against a high-level opponent who's only looking for the one big win that will propel him to the top of the card. This was as classic NOTBPW as it gets, with limbwork being king and whenever not, someone being dropped on their skull to be pinned unceremoniously. After losing last week, Mark was determined to not fail and kicked out of some suplexes he absolutely shouldn't have. Because they just gave Deeley the opportunity to send his opponent a message by upping the viciousness. By the time Mark was made to tap out, his arm was almost ripped out of its socket, and Erik had stopped with the joking. (18:05)

MATCH 4: JESSICA CONROY VS LAUREN EASTER

JessicaConroy.jpg.a5e8943855287ae0f1aef8539d085821.jpg VS LaurenEaster.jpg.7c1f5bd3ae486a220a8aca964d287e7a.jpg

From the moment we begun, there was only one winner. But Jessica stood her ground more than expected for a near-rookie, trying, presumably on the queen's accord, to target Lauren's eye, an objectively weak spot. But what happened in the second half of this very quick match was fairly uncontested. Lauren spammed her Belly-To-Belly Suplex, then pinned little miss Conroy by kneeling on her collarbone. (7:44)

Rating: 50

SEGMENT 3: BATTLE LINES ARE DRAWN

After the match, Nadia Snow tried to attack using her title belt, but Lauren dodged. She went for a forearm strike, only to be parried and then headbutted under the eye. Both women backing off, they had an intense staredown.

Rating: 54

MATCH 4: BROOKE TYLER VS ZOE AMMIS

BrookeTyler.jpg.155e83f538559dd07ea48ef2d8f2d3df.jpg VS ZoeAmmis.jpg.32707b9e559c84f00d21d920862dbb2f.jpg

This match was a revelation for anyone who wasn't quite sure, or had tuned out of the company in recent years. Brooke Tyler is the best wrestler in NOTBPW. She dragged an excellent contest out of a very average Zoe Ammis performance, in a match that probably went on way too long, but also was as starmaking as you could get for someone who is approaching the prime of her career, was a prodigy since day one, and is literally named "The Franchise". At the very least, it made sure that the Queen's Court act should probably not be holding the title belt at this point, or maybe...anyone else on the roster. While the men's side of the roster is being aided by the Pacific Alliance, the women's division has to make due with matchups that aren't fresh and a lot of young wrestlers still being built up. Might as well have the best possible placeholder for Greg Sluchinski star ratings if you're not comfortable with what the women's division is currently offering. (15:07)

Rating: 75

MAIN EVENT: JARED JOHNSON VS SONNY WILDSIDE

JaredJohnson.jpg.9444794c3f99100d702f782ebcf7f009.jpg VS SonnyWildside.jpg.051e06e55c47fdb6be50fb0073fba8bf.jpg

The two young rockstars of the NOTBPW had their first singles TV Main Event against each other. And they delivered a good match, with Johnson's performance particularly shining bright. He allowed Sonny to get all of his crowdpleasing offense in, while also managing to keep the control of the flow of the contest, guiding his opponent's comebacks effortlessly. Johnson tried working Sonny's leg which would be the obvious huge advantage, but Sonny Wildside had two years in the dojo getting his leg worked on, plus his whole young career as a professional wrestler. He knew how to keep separation, get to the ropes, and just not be doomed, which forced Johnson to change strategies and start working the neck, setting up either of his two finishers. As Sonny went for a flying headscissors, Jared caught him in position for the MDK powerbomb, but as he took the steps forward, Sonny managed to get him into a Sunset Flip for the three count! Sonny was going to represent NOTBPW in the fight for the All-Pacific Title. After the match, he shook hands with a fairly annoyed Johnson, then went over to the commentarry table and shouted into Tom Townsend's mic that he's bringing the gold home babyyy!

You're definitely succeeding in striking a different tone to your CGC, with the TV Title match and Lauren Easter pinfall sounding particularly vicious. It looks like you've inherited a much stronger base than at CGC too with the pair of 70+-rated matches on the undercard. I enjoyed the Greg Sluchinski line. The match storytelling seemed strong again and, in terms of the product transition you mentioned before, it was interesting to open with a promo, albeit a short, simple one to make the direction shift more gradual.

I Quit Match without someone actually quitting would be a bit of a scam lol and I don't think McFly is going to retire that soon.

Cage match seems like a solid choice, but I usually like it better when there's some storytelling behind it (like when a heel keep running away from a challenge, so being locked in a cage is actually a big punishment for him).

Beside that, good show! Glad you already embraced the All-Pacific Alliance

Oh yeah, both a better roster and a lot more quality and popularity than the CGC diary. Ironically though in this version of the mod my roster is arguably thinner than CGC's.  And thanks for all the positive feedback.

I'm curious about the stipulation for Sean McFly vs Cameron Vessey. I QUIT makes sense, but Steel Cage would be my preference. Interesting that alliance workers fight for the NOTBPW Television title, makes it more interesting. Sonny is so good.

Well then, one vote for Steel Cage! Sonny is great.

The Alliance is a gift considering how thin the roster is, only issue is the fact that talent trades aren't easy due to the popularities being limited to each country, so I have to be careful with my loans. As for McFly, you won't be scammed, it's been adressed in the background posts of the diary!

NOTBPW CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING - 2020 EPISODE 3

MATCH 1: DEREK FROST VS MIMIC

DerekFrost.jpg.51bbb8bc76cd39404753857574a74387.jpg VS Mimic.jpg.c8c82a5493f1babfb65ffe38d7a2c055.jpg

This contest was the debut of John "Mimic" Yates, a unique competitor that psyches opponents out using their mannerisms and taunts. Frost however is too cool and unbothered most of the time, wanting to get the job done, but the inherent mystery of the debuting wrestler and lack of ability to scout them gave Mimic an advantage that proved to be insurmountable. His combination of speed and stoutness really gave Frost trouble, disorienting the big man long enough for Mimic to hit a visually impressive Screwdriver (Spinning Michinoku Driver) for the win. (9:21)

MATCH 2: DEBORAH YOUNG & JESSICA CONROY VS SANDRA SHINE & ZOE AMMIS

DeborahYoung.jpg.adcdb8c62b8ddb816a25ed45ec5531e7.jpg JessicaConroy.jpg.33d3b35a29509d4bf2793dcef879d698.jpg VS SandraShine.jpg.172cd131e1fc2244898be798e19e0331.jpg ZoeAmmis.jpg.891eca53fe0b8ff90045e7a7d3458b85.jpg

Some nice tag team action between three of the young members of the women's division and the veteran Ammis, in a match that served to give the Queen's Court some momentum back after getting victimized by Lauren Easter for the past month. The match was as frantic as it gets with a huge powerhouse like Young in it, with Shine and Conroy in particular getting some almost lucha-libre exchanges in. With the babyfaces dominating the youngster, Deboray Young became the hot tag, annihilating everything in her way to hitting the Sit-Out Powerbomb on Sandra Shine for the win. (13:54)

MATCH 3: ARIEL BREAKS VS NADIA SNOW

ArielBreaks.jpg.a688a8836af7d9f1ded9cca22b146a63.jpg VS NadiaSnow.jpg.51509075dc0ff049bc5adc09ac9ccdb3.jpg

The Queen gave a decree to the decorated challenger by beating the everloving crap out of the person she's been tagging with. Ariel is considered an advanced prospect, but her best role is still face in peril that gets dominated by experienced heels, and so this was almost all Snow. Ariel did managed a very good comeback where she even hit the Breakerfall for a very close nearfall, but that just led to Nadia hitting her with some Snow Balls to the face, making her bleed from her nose, and pinning her. (10:22)

MATCH 4: LAURA FLAME VS SALLY ANNE CHRISTIANSON

LauraFlame.jpg.d0a43c66ae90b1f3fef790d46939b06d.jpg VS SallyAnneChristianson.jpg.3a3c91bcd1f712af63bebc4d4897bdd0.jpg

After her great performance last week, Laura Flame wanted to build up momentum against a very successful and dangerous veteran in Sally Anne. Her karate and kickboxing led the match, with a lot of it having Christianson forced into defense, dodging and parrying and minimizing damage, until the right opportunity to drive Laura to the mat ensued. Trying to work the leg with stretches and heel hooks is logical, but also brings you closer to being kicked or knee'd in the face, so a lot of this match was worked in the negative space, with the danger of moves rather than them being hit all the time. Which was a necessary evil to put over Laura Flame's KO power, with the Flame Fire Kick giving her the win the minute it was hit. (14:35)

SEGMENT 1: CHALLENGE IS ISSUED

After the match, Laura Flame complained about the prospect of being passed over for the new shiny shooting toy, who got to wrestle before her this year, and called out Claire Winters for a match at Big City Brawl. Without saying a word, Claire accepted and they had a staredown.

Rating: 46

SEGMENT 2: ANNOUNCEMENT OF SUPPORT

Jared Johnson and Sonny Wildside are backstage, a few steps before Crippler position. They announce that they've answered the Dynamite Express's open challenge and then Jared takes the liberty to announce he'll be at Sonny's corner for the All-Pacific title match at Big City Brawl, something that catches Wildside off guard.

MATCH 5: THE DYNAMITE EXPRESS (C) VS JARED JOHNSON & SONNY WILDSIDE FOR THE NOTBPW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

CamJones.jpg.6ca3d237006b9923ccc21828ac091ed0.jpg SydCollier.jpg.e5a61bb70b0c023e01bbe740cb5f66d3.jpg NOTBPW_Tag.jpg.5be455660011dca52fbb9dfaedd529d5.jpg JaredJohnson.jpg.1b6828555ed73997546632445e14206e.jpg SonnyWildside.jpg.3c0bef85678a3887d7e04c19096762eb.jpg

This match ruled, all thanks to the four men's willingness to bump like crazy for one another, leading to some PPV-level offense that must have really left some bruises, like the assisted blockbuster Johnson and Wildside hit to Collier on the steel stairs, or the double kneebars by the express on Sonny that really took the spring out of his step for the rest of the contest. This one had a very short feeling out process, since Johnson and Wildside knew that they're at a cohesion disadvantage and just wanted to get the champs to their limit in order to fully utilize their chances. Johnson put Collier in the Carolina Crossface, but Cam Jones was there to break things up and keep things going, which led to all four men in the ring for a while, before the finishing stretch of Cam Jones and Sonny Wildside, with Wildside missing on his 630 degree leg drop, allowing Jones to hit him with a backdrop, then tag in Collier to end the contest with the Texas Cloverleaf, Sonny tapping out to protect himself for his singles title match before Jared could intervene. (20:12)

Rating: 71

SEGMENT 3: POST-MATCH ATTACK

The Champions were victorious, but the Canadian Blondes felt they were entitled to a title shot after their week 1 victory, which led to them taking matters to their own hands and attacking them viciously after the match. We'll see when and if a match is made, in the aftermath of this.

MAIN EVENT: CAM VESSEY & SHOOTER SEAN DEELEY VS ERIK STRONG & SEAN MCFLY

CameronVessey.jpg.ac058dc1fe5c3f7251f33b2e3835737c.jpg ShooterSeanDeeley.jpg.12a9e365db5aef0396e315c6b4cffd8c.jpg VS ErikStrong.jpg.78313454f2b86af3711a9244e093c929.jpg SeanMcFly.jpg.3f1548f0ed630e64e44ad2ca7ee71d43.jpg

The All-Star Tag Main Event, a Canadian wrestling staple, really delivered a great match worthy of standing with the best matches of January so far. This mat wrestling clinic almost behaved like the rare shoot-style tag match, with isolated mini-singles trying to find an inch to work with, someone to be the weak link. This after a few minutes proved to be Erik Strong, slipping and getting himself in a stretch from Vessey, which transitioned the match into a more conventional form with Strong the face in peril for the second half. Strong sold for the heels like everything was disintegrating him, and when the Sean McFly hot tag came in, he wrestled like there was no tomorrow. He literally has never spammed DeLorean Drivers, but he did it now, hitting both men with one en route to pinning Sean Deeley after a second finisher. (22:24)

Rating: 78

SEGMENT 4: (NOT) A GOODBYE

Sean McFly closed the show, saying that he has been grateful wrestling in this company for the past 21 years, but he is more grateful for the opportunity to rid this place of the most arrogant, self-centered wrestler in NOTBPW history, someone who doesn't fit what the company should be at its best, despite the fact he's a world class wrestler. This is still McFly's NOTBPW, but more importantly, it always has been the fans' promotion. The very best of Canadian Wrestling.

MATCH 1: MIMIC & MOUNTIE MANN VS SHINGEN MIYAZAKI & REAVER

Mimic.jpg.e9e1ed2657f74e9433febd7b5898960c.jpg MountieMann.jpg.0a15ff5d6af08bfada0765f8743c865c.jpg VS ShingenMiyazaki.jpg.f4ae344ec52b63202c19200d7ba238cf.jpg Reaver.jpg.c4fed37e66b9c72bb4c38164bb1492ef.jpg

The PPV begun with a high-intensity tag team match to get the crowd excited. Reaver had another date by happenstance before returning to Osaka and he teamed up with the man who defeated him 10 days ago to combat the newcomer Mimic and a staple of the company in the Mountie. There was a focus in the exchanges between Mimic and Shingen, teasing a contest down the line, but otherwise this was fairly standard, solid. An upscaled TV match, essentially, which ended after Mimic hit Reaver with the Screwdriver. (15:02)

MATCH 2: CLAIRE WINTERS VS LAURA FLAME

ClaireWinters.jpg.d527b01b3d4e84cb40971df84b6792ab.jpg VS LauraFlame.jpg.5cf2ed216cbb86b757b56d50744e37e5.jpg

Having two wrestlers trained in martial arts, who fully incorporate it into their moveset is relatively a rarity in the west, and these two had the opportunity to have a gruesomely realistic match, where almost every strike led to a beatdown sequence in an attempt for a knock out victory, with the other person playing defense and/or trying to get a rope break. It was also a novelty in the sense of being very short. Claire Winters relished the violence and went on full attack mode a bit too early, leaving openings her slightly more experienced opponent took full advantage of. Claire's sells became groggier and groggier, until a Flame Fire Kick she couldn't get up from. Laura carefully pinned her shoulders, then took a microphone and asked for the one thing she hasn't had in her time in NOTBPW: a title shot. (8:02)

MATCH 3: NOTBPW WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP - LAUREN EASTER VS NADIA SNOW (C)

This match was based on simple storytelling, with Nadia Snow getting heat on Lauren Easter's "injured" eye. It built and built and built with some vicious offense at times and some well-timed comebacks by Easter. The issue is the release never properly came, as the injury angle was mostly put in place to protect Easter in defeat. A Snow Ball cut her comeback, and another put her down for the three count. She even bladed which is very rare for the company, but despite all that, this feels like the match that would have benefited most from a babyface win. (18:24)

MATCH 4: ALL-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP - SONNY WILDSIDE (W/ JARED JOHNSON) VS JOSHUA TAYLOR (C)

A no-nonsense, no filler banger of a match (despite the overuse of the term), between two men who wrestled with the determination of top guys. First off: Jared Johnson offered nothing but moral support. Now onto the match itself, their styles meshed seamlessly, creating a spectacle based around their really high levels of athleticism. Sonny went wild as he tends to, while Taylor tried to use his impactful offense to keep him down. Sonny was on top for the first half of the match, as much as you can while keeping it fairly even, until he was rocked by a Suicide Dive he himself took to the outside, feeling some neck strain after- the strategy had worked. After that, Sonny fought valiantly but it's clear his ground game isn't "all world" level, and Taylor worked over the neck until he picked up a clean win with his Butterfly Lock- not before Sonny got some really close nearfalls. (14:35)

After the match and the Champion's celebrations, Jared picked a visibly hurt Wildside up. He was clearly still conflicted after his loss to him, but to everyone's surprise, Jared did not even attempt to put him in the Carolina Crossface, instead earnestly supporting Sonny and getting him to the back safely. The Wolverine had turned face.

MATCH 5: NOTBPW CHAMPIONSHIP ERIK STRONG VS SHOOTER SEAN DEELEY (C)

A true title match. Erik and Sean fought like men who have held the championship and know what it means, because they have and they do. Erik did his best but Shooter was the star of the show, leading the match in his own pace, getting it to the home stretch. There was a lot of Erik trying to spam the Strong Sault in order to win as cleanly as possible, with Shooter sadistically getting to the arm even though the legs are considered a better, safer strategy. As a result, it felt really early in the contest that Deeley was one mistake away from losing, a mistake that almost came multiple times as Strong is extremely proficient in counter work, for example turning an armbreaker into La Magistral. In the end, Strong hit a vicious, out of character headbutt to get into the slingblade, setting up the Strong Sault from the top rope. As he hit that however, Deeley maneuvered just correctly to get the armbar locked in, transitioned into the seated stretch and forced the tap out victory. Champ retains. (23:04)

MAIN EVENT: LOSER LEAVES TOWN STEEL CAGE MATCH - CAMERON VESSEY VS SEAN MCFLY

CameronVessey.jpg.0e609060703980dd8010c4279dc994c3.jpg VS SeanMcFly.jpg.7bb160eb8165c6a50319945cdfc277c2.jpg

The winner of the fan vote was the Steel Cage match, therefore it had to be revealed at the start of the show. Admittedly, a bit antithetical to the other stipulation symbolism/visuals wise, it did serve as a throwback to the territory era. In truth however, this was a normal NOTBW, inside a Cage, at least for most of its runtime. Save for a handful of irish whips or face washes into the cage steel for effect. The grappling was absolutely sublime, effortless, BUT, not clean or choreographed. In fact, most of the match revolved around The Struggle of doing anything meaningful in a claustrophobic space against an opponent that is having the most important match of their lifetime. No real openings, many pinning predicaments, and a lot of nervousness and frustration underpinned the early goings. Both men having a driver for a finisher meant similar approaches in some regards, until Vessey's cunning and, let's face it, paranoia took over and he started working the veteran's midsection, findnig it easier to target in the spots they were fighting over, as well as betting on some age-related strain. The result? When Sean inevitably got to his signature stretch successfully, lifting Vessey for the Delorean Driver proved extremely difficult- it took three tries, and when he hit the move it was not clean or devastating. Vessey kicked out. This is when the cage started coming into play more for McFly, as a way to inflict damage that takes longer to heal- he had to stay in this match first, then try to win it. Cameron Vessey's plan had worked, as he was outlasting the veteran. But pinning or submitting him proved near impossible. Body scissors, convoluted backbreakers, and a Vessey Driver II all failed. He went for a dive from the top of the cage, and missed! But McFly couldn't do a move. He even strained to flip him on his back to put an arm across his chest and "pin" him. 1...2...2.9! One of the latest kickouts you'll ever see from Vessey, and McFly was absolutely inconsolable. He went for a second Delorean Driver, but it became a back body drop. He went for his missile dropkick into the corner but it was blocked. He got hit with a German Suplex into the turnbuckle, and he was basically out cold. But Cameron Vessey didn't want to risk it. He picked him up, sat up the top turnbuckle, and hit a Vessey Driver II from the second rope, getting the win and getting Sean McFly out of the company. (28:06)

SEGMENT: THE GLOATING OF SURVIVAL, AND WHAT'S TO COME

After the match, Sean McFly didn't get his time to say goodbye to the fans, other than taking a bow at the top of the ramp with Vessey still in the ring. Vessey proclaimed himself to be at the top of the world. He got married on Friday, saved the company on Saturday, and on Sunday even he will rest. He said he realized he was being too modest when he was calling himself the MVP of NOTBPW. He's the MVP of wrestling. He's at the top of the mountain. He's the-

He is interrupted by a familiar theme song. A TCW theme song. And someone from his past. Jay Chord is in the building, as he joins Vessey in the ring. He reminds Cam Vessey what he's been telling to TCW fans lately, it's his destiny to be the best. To win the title his father did. But to be the best, he needs to prove he has surpassed his senior in MAW. He tells Vessey he'll have a chance to back his empty talk up, when the two face each other at Clash Classic 2020, live on PPV! The crowd lose their minds and the show closes on a staredown and them exchanging words off mic. Security rushes into the ring and we go off the air before there's any (if there even would be) physicality.

Wow, a stacked card with a big finale. The Winters-Flame match sounded like a lot of fun and the Vessey-McFly write-up really captured the tension and how both men had their openings. In keeping with the previous shows, you used the few short segments you had to set up a lot with the Johnson development and the surprise at the end, so it should be another hot month ahead.
