Nitro Episode 5:

Wednesday 30th May 2001

Live late-night on FX

5,500 crowd in Memphis, Tennessee

--------------

Show opens up with Linkin Park's 'Runaway'

Runaway - Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory) - YouTube

------------

Show starts off with Eric Bischoff and Johnny Ace in the ring. They state they're out here to address the events that ended the Big Bang PPV. They say that as a result of their injuries sustained on Sunday night a number of people will not be at the show tonight. Shane McMahon has a severely swollen calf muscle among other injuries and could not board a plane to be here.

They go on to state that Booker T was also unable to travel and that Mike Awesome and Terry Funk were also too banged up to be here.

Johnny Ace states that for this week Tony Schiavone, Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson have all been given the night off to recover from the injuries they suffered when they were assaulted at the announce desk at Big Bang. For one night only the announce team will be JJ Dillon, Curt Hennig and Stevie Ray.

Announce team are seen and say a reserved hello on commentary with Stevie Ray looking like he has a banged up hand. Stevie Ray explains he damaged his wrist blocking a chair shot from one of those damn lunatics.

Back in the ring Bischoff says what happened at the end of Big Bang! was a disgrace. Those scum-bags showed the world why neither the WWF or WCW wanted them and why they will never get hired by either company! There's a reason we don't want them here and I hope they never come back we don't need that extreme hardcore crap here!

The rest of the show will go on as normal as this is WCW dammit and the show must go on because this is Nitro dammit!

WCW DDP Theme Song Self High Five - YouTube

DDP comes out with Kanyon following him come out. DDP comes down to the ring with Kanyon and grabs a mic. DDP looks hurt and not 100 percent by a long shot. He gets a mic and he says that as the champ Booker T can't be here tonight he's out here on behalf of all the boys and girls in the back. DDP says what happened at Big Bang was a dark moment in the history of WCW and they want and deserve reassurance that this won't happen again. DDP also says that him, Kanyon and he's sure Booker and many others want to get their hands on the guys responsible least of all me as they screwed me out of my shot at the World Heavyweight Championship!

Bischoff says he understands the boys frustrations but they're not going to sanction some kind of match against them... none of them are or ever will be WCW employees and he suggests DDP and Kanyon accept that and leave as the show must go on and we've got out first match of the night coming up after the break!

Johnny Ace says on behalf of Shane he has booked a match and that DDP & Kanyon will get their chance to blow off some steam as tonight in the main event they will team up against two ex ECW wrestlers. Bischoff says he hopes that those Extremely Untalented Losers are watching at home as they see two of their ex-colleagues being paid to wrestle on WCW TV in a sanctioned match which they will never be in themselves!

JJ Dillon makes a comment that whoever it is that is hired for the main event... some might say they were only hired in to spite those other guys...

Johnny Ace says he understands as Head of Talent Relations he has a duty of care to the boys and girls in the locker-room and he knows that everyone wants to know why those guys did what they did. Johnny says he agrees with Bischoff that no match should happen and that those guys certainly shouldnt be rewarded with money for appearing on a WCW show for what they did... but in the interest of showing the boys and the world why they did what they did he has commissioned Roddy Piper who recorded a set of Real Talk with Roddy interviews with the guys involved which will be shown later in the show. They have agreed not to cause any disruption tonight on the basis that the footage is aired.

Bischoff is really hacked off about this and doesn't like the idea of them getting any TV time.

Curt Hennig and Stevie Ray on commentary both mention they think those guys said enough with their actions. Curt says if they are here tonight he hopes they come to the commentary desk and try what they tried with Tony, Scott and Arn last Sunday! Stevie Ray says even with a cast on his wrist he's ready to go with them! They think they can come to WCW take out its champ and my brother and everyone else without any push-back???

JJ comments that then first match of the show is set to start!

Match 1:

Hugh Morrus vs Jamie Knoble

Hugh Morrus WCW Theme "Xtra Large" - YouTube

Jamie Noble's 2002 v3 Titantron Entrance Video feat. "2 Z' Top" Theme [HD] - YouTube

Hugh Morrus looks good here as he gets a fairly decisive win against Knoble. Knoble does go down fighting and comes out of it looking okay but the speed, size and strength advantage that Morrus has is too much for him.

Hugh Morrus wins via pinfall (7.01) - (51 rated)

------------

Rob Van Dam with the U.S title backstage with Lance Storm in the locker-room. Lance Storm says he hasn't always seen eye to eye with RVD but he thinks they can both agree with those ECW guys did on Sunday was a disgrace. RVD says he used to respect them but he says they have a loser mentality. RVD says he loved ECW but he has to look after himself - Sabu, Sandman, Dreamer and the rest of them only proved why RVD didn't go to back for them - they're all liabilities who can't be controlled. He says they call him a traitor and a sell-out just for getting a job. It's not his fault that he was the hottest free agent in wrestling and nobody wanted to sign them.

Lance says he agrees and that's why he left ECW when he did.

RVD asks about Mike Awesome. Lance says after Sandman's brutal attack on him he's in a real bad way, he wasn't 100 percent already but now he's real banged up, but he'll be back next week and after the latest attack he wants to get his hands on those bastards just as much as everyone else does.

Buff Bagwell comes out with Johnny 'The Bull' to the stage for an interview

JJ Dillon is in the ring and interviews them. He says to Buff it was a tough loss at the PPV against Windham & Rotunda, you seem to have been unsure about wanting to tag with Johnny, I'm sure fans are wondering is this a tag team that we're going to see more of?

Johnny says he's willing to give everything to make this work. He wants them to progress as a team and work towards the tag team championship. He sees Buff as an ideal mentor for him.

Buff isn't happy with Johnny. He says he does agree with him he wants the tag team titles but he's just not sure Johnny has what it takes.

Buff says he's been talking to someone else about teaming with them instead. Johnny looks hurt.

Buff says that next week Johnny will face his mystery man 1-on-1. If Johnny can beat him Buff will tag with Johnny permanently. If the mystery guy beats him, then it's over!

Johnny looks a little worried but determined to get the win next week

Match 2:

The FBI (Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke) vs The Harris Twins (Don & Ron Harris)

TNA: 2005 Harris Brothers Theme (Big Twins) - YouTube

Full Blooded ltalians (FBI) 2nd Titantron (with 2nd Theme) - YouTube

The announce team hype up The FBI's debut in-ring on WCW television. Don and Ron have the size advantage but don't write off The FBI on their size alone. Little Guido may be little in size but he's a 2 time tag team champion in ECW and this team are no joke.

A fairly open match with the Harris twins getting in a good amount of offence but in the end The FBI get the win!

The FBI win via pinfall - (6.04) - (41 rated)

Roddy Piper interview with Joey Styles & The Chair Swingin' Freaks (Axl Rotten & Balls Mahoney)

Roddy is sat in what appears to be an empty diner with Joey Styles, Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney. They look annoyed at him but he isn't too scared.

Piper introduces the first segment of Real Talk with Roddy and it's presented more like an informal chat than a traditional wrestling talk show interview

Piper says first all the world is wondering...why???

Joey Styles say it's obvious why they did what they did. Joey says they did what they did to get the attention of the wrestling world and clearly that was a success given they're sat here with Roddy for a segment on Nitro. Joey says guys like us, guys like me, Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney, guys like us aren't wanted by the mainstream wrestling companies in America and Japan because we're unpredictable... because we're unorthodox...because we're too extreme!!! Axl and Balls agree with this enthusiastically.

Piper says WCW/Shane hired in a fair amount of ex-ECW stars... could it not just be that Shane and Johnny Ace thought you guys wouldn't draw money or get people to watch TV?

Joey laughs at this. It would be pretty rich for Shane McMahon to think he knows anything about how to get a TV rating or draw money... the only reason his Daddy ever let him on TV was to take a big bump! Shane McMahon doesn't know what's good for him. And let me tell you something Piper... our "invasion" at the end of Big Bang? That's the most talked about thing in wrestling since the start of the N.W.O! Nobody's seen anything like it!

Piper then mentions that part of your demands to not cause a scene on tonight's Nitro was for this footage to get aired tonight... but what's your plan in the short and long term? Where does this all end?

Joey says between them, Don Callis, Steve Corino and Dreamer, Sandman and Sabu... they're all complex individuals who have different life goals... but they have a common purpose to get themselves on TV and help feed their families! Joey says ultimately it doesn't matter to any of them whether that's here on WCW, with the WWF, hell, AJPW or NJPW if they're watching in Japan... Konnichiwa! Shigoto o Kudasai! You know that means in Japanese, Piper? It means give me a god damn job!!! Styles says there's been a lot of names for us... the ex-ECW guys...well since Team Extreme is already taken by The Hardly Boys and their skank friend... you better call us THE EXTREME ALLIANCE!!!

Piper says okay, well, well you all at The Extreme Alliance, you want a job whether its with WCW or elsewhere... what do you say to the rumours online that maybe you guys already have a job, huh? There's some rumours that your ex-boss Paul Heyman, now on WWF TV, some say that towards the end of ECW he was actually getting money from the WWF to keep afloat... and that maybe now... maybe you're actually all getting paid by WWF, or Paul Hayman via WWF and actually you did what you did to damage Shane's first PPV purely to spite him and for the WWF?

Joey styles laughs at this.

Wait wait. So let me get this straight. You think... or some online virgin marks that still live in their mum's basement think... they think that PAUL HEYMAN is paying us to do this??

Piper says sure that's what some people are speculating.

Joey laughs again with Axl & Balls joining in. Paul E didn't even pay us half the time when we worked for HIS COMPANY!!! You think he's going to pay us money that WWF or Vince McMahon gives him?? Or that we'd trust a check that came from Paul Heyman??? I've never heard such a sack of s*** in all my life!

Joey then looks at the camera intently

This is a direct message to Shane McMahon, Johnny Ace and that bastard Eric Bischoff! Me, Axl Rotten & Ball Mahoney, the CHAIR SWINGIN' FREAKS!!!! We ain't going anywhere until we take what's rightfully ours!! We deserve a gold plated contract whether it's her on FX with WCW or whether we keep disrupted your shows, get enough TV time that WWF or a company in Japan decides to bring us in to their company instead... if you like money Shane... if you really like money you'll open your eyes and see that the FANS of both WCW and ECW and hell even the WWF... they want to see The Extreme Alliance face off against the best you got here in WCW!! Whether you sanction the matches and make money from it or we disrupt your shows...either way... we ain't going anywhere!!!

Axl and Balls get off their diner chairs and start swinging them towards Piper and the camera crew who make their exit

MexiCruisers in Shane's office where Johnny Ace and Eric Bischoff are. All 3 of them are furious about what happened at Big Bang! Juventud not happy with the way the Cruiserweight match went down, neither are Super Crazy and Psychosis.

They want revenge on Shane Helms and 3 Count

Eric says well where were you 3 idiots when your company needed you last week?? At the end of the show when we needed our roster to fight off those ECW invaders you boys where desaparecida! Missing! You were all in ECW before weren't you? Did those guys pay you off to take a hike or let them in the building, huh?

Juvi, Super Crazy and Psychosis deny this! They say they are innocent! Inocente! They chased 3 Count out the building and spent the night searching for revenge in Georgia!

Bischoff says fine, fine, here's what we can do. I'll put you in a match later tonight and if you can win that then maybe we can talk next week about this.

Match 3:

Kwee Wee vs Lance Storm

(WCW UNRELEASED) Kwee Wee Theme (Full Version) - YouTube

Lance Storm WCW Titantron - "Team Canada" - YouTube

Commentary team mention Storm might be a bit banged up after Big Bang! but he's in the mood for a big win tonight as he takes on Kwee Wee. Kwee Wee gets in a bit of offence but Storm runs rings around him and dominates the latter half of the match before getting the win.

Lance Storm wins via submission - (7.38) - (61 rated)

Fit Finlay, Tajiri and Dave Taylor backstage.

Fit is training Tajiri for a big match next week. Finlay says he's arranged for Tajiiri to take on Kid Kash who walked out on him a few weeks ago during a tag match. Finlay says Tajiri must get revenge.

Tajiri says Kash was hurt he couldn't continue. Finlay slaps Tajiri and says if he wants to be a champion he needs to show no mercy, have everyone on the locker-room fear him. If they don't fear him they don't respect him.

Roddy Piper interview with Don Callis and Steve Corino

Callis and Corino are being interviewed in what looks like the same diner that Styles and the Chair Swingin' Freaks were earlier. Callis has a burger and fries and is nonchalantly eating them without a care in the world alongside a strawberry milkshake

Piper is a bit bemused by Callis' eating

"What?!" Callis says, "a guy can't eat??"

Piper starts by asking Corino what his motivations were for his actions. He talks about how Styles said they were The Extreme Alliance and want a contract with WCW or whoever else. Does Corino share that goal?

Corino says he doesn't care whether you want to call us The Extreme Alliance or whatever else stupid name. Corino says he's the King of Old School, he says he's seen people talking about how they're all a bunch of hardcore garbage wrestlers but that's just stereotyping. Corino says he doesn't care so much for hardcore wrestling himself, but the fact of the matter remains that because he made his name in ECW people don't rate him.

Corino says people might not know but he actually got a contract for WCW just a few months ago and was ready to debut for them, but when all of the drama with the sale of the company came along, low and behold, Shane McMahon takes over and his contract is off the table! He says it shows that people overlook him and don't know anything about him.

Corino says he is pound for pound the best technical wrestler in the world today and if people won't give him that respect he will take it from them!

Piper says best technical wrestler in the world today is a bold claim and how can he possibly back that up?

Corino says he will back that up if they put him in a ring with anybody on the WCW roster! He says he's heard a lot about Lance Storm being the best technical wrestler in the company. Maybe Lance is a great technician he says, but let's get something straight... Lance Storm thinks if he waves that Canadian flag hard enough people might mistake it for him having a personality... but being Canadian isn't a personality Lance!! That flag, MY FLAG! has more personality in it than you have in your whole damn body! You are a national embarassment and as a fellow Canadian I'm embarrassed that you represent my country week in week out on national TV and if I get the chance I'll beat some charisma into you!

Don Callis laughs as he keeps eating some fries.

Piper says to Corino you guys all wanted a contract but you don't show any respect to other ECW stars who did get a contract? If you kept your contract Steve, would you not be a "traitor" like you say Rob Van Dam is?

Corino laughs. The difference is Roddy if I got a contract I'd try and help my ex-co workers get a slice of the pie too because I'm just that kind of guy. Rob Van Dam is the kind of guy who only cares about himself. People say oh he got Bill Alfonso a job, no he didn't, he got Bill Alfonso in because he knows by himself he's not good enough! He only won the U.S title because Booker T got run over that night.

Piper asks if Corino or any of the Extreme Alliance had anything to do with that?

Corino says they had nothing to do with it - nothing. Clearly Booker T has some enemies. Was it DDP? Rob Van Dam himself? Who knows, but it wasn't any of us Corino says. The way I see it Rob Van Dam benefited more than anyone else, maybe it was him, hell maybe he was just smoking too much that day and just did it by accident. Do they have drug testing in WCW? Maybe they wanna start with that guy...

Don Callis finishes his meal then interjects.

You know what the problem with Rob Van Dam is, Roddy? Don says

I'll tell you what the problem with Rob Van Dam is, Don continues. Rob Van Dam, sure he was a success in ECW, but you know why that was? In ECW, Rob Van Dam was a big fish in a small pond. And then ECW dies. Rob Van Dam is the hottest free agent in all of wrestling, but where does he go, the BOOMING WWF or the not so booming WCW that let's be honest, Shane McMahon has just bought after several years of being in the mud...  look at the WWF's last few world champions... STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN... THE ROCK... TRIPLE H... KURT ANGLE... look at WCW's... Vince Russo... David Arquette???? You know they said ECW was some outlaw federation but Vince Russo or David Arquette would've never won the ECW world title.

That's why Rob Van Dam is here. Rob just likes to be a big fish in a small pond. Would Rob Van Dam go to WWF and compete with all of those top guys they've got there? Or would he just get lost in the shuffle? In WCW though, he comes here and what? He's one of the biggest stars on his first night on the show... most of WCW's top guys are still sitting at home collecting those paychecks for doing absolutely nothing. So WCW paints RVD joining them as this huge win... but he just came here because it's another small pond for him to be a big fish in.

Well, Roddy says, if WCW is such a small pond... why then have you all come here? Why not invade WWF instead if you think it's so much better?

It's all part of the plan, Don says.

Steve then starts talking straight in the camera.

Corino says despite what Shane McMahon, Johnny Ace and Eric Bischoff might say, WCW is on its knees! WCW needs the Extreme Alliance more than the Extreme Alliance needs it! You think if we could go to a WWF show and do what we did at Big Bang?? There's no way. But WCW is weak... WCW needs some new blood and some fresh faces and we're here to provide just that whether they want to admit it and give us all contracts or not!!

Callis ends the interview by looking to the camera and saying look Vince if you're watching and you think you'd like the Extreme Alliance in the WWF... we're all ears!

Match 4:

Jung Dragons & AJ Styles vs The MexiCruisers (Juventud, Super Crazy & Psychosis)

WCW Jung Dragons 2nd Theme Song - "Gong/Shakuhachi" (With Tron) - YouTube

AJ Styles Theme (Old Theme) - YouTube

Mexicools - theme and Titantron Video - YouTube

An entertaining high-flying match with all 6 guys getting in the ring to do their moves at various points of the match. The better team work and experience of the MexiCruisers plus their determination to win after Bischoff's challenge sees them through with Juventud getting the win.

The MexiCruisers win via pinfall - (7.32) - (60 rated)

----------------------

Barry Windham and Mike Rotunda cut a promo.

They're pleased to be teaming again and glad to get the win at Big Bang! They're laying down a challenge for any team in the roster to fight them and prove why they shouldn't get a shot at the tag team titles in the near future!

Freestyle segment with Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda (46 rated)

----------------

Billy Kidman, Torrie Wilson and Shane Helms backstage

Kidman is chatting with Shane Helms saying he might have used 3 Count to get the win at Big Bang but when Kidman gets his shot he will know that's his plan now!

Helms says he had nothing to do with the 3 Count interference at Big Bang and that he's through with them.

Torrie says that's awfully convenient and asks Shane if he will put the title on the line next week.

Shane looks hesitant to do it.

Suddenly, Juventud, Super Crazy and Psychosis barge in

Lots of shouting and screaming as Kidman is caught in the middle with Shane to one side.

Kidman says look Juvi you lost your match you better get in the line as I'm the number 1 contender now. I beat your boys fair and square at Big Bang so the next shot is mine.

Lots of screaming and shouting.

Eric Bischoff walks by and asks what the hell is going on

The MexiCruisers say they got their win so Juvi deserves a shot at the title.

Eric says he never promised that.

Eric says I'll tell you what I do. Next week... we will have Shane Helms team with 3 Count...

Helms looks annoyed

AND BILLY KIDMAN!

Kidman looks confused

Yes, it will be Shane Helms, his 2 buddies in 3 Count...and the number 1 contender Billy Kidman... in a 4 on 4 tag team match with you 3! he says as he points to the MexiCruisers

A 4 on 3?? Juvi says, are you crazy?!

Super Crazy says I am Super... I am Crazy... but I am not that crazy!!

Eric says calm down let me finish.

It will be those 4... versus you 3... and a partner of your choosing! If you can't find anyone to team with you... well then in that case it will be a 4 on 3 handicap match... so you better get making some friends mi amigos!!!

And if the MexiCruisers win... well then Billy, you won't be the only number 1 conteder as Juvi will also be the number 1 contender!

What?!? Kidman says, Torrie Wilson starts complaining too as the MexiCruisers start laughing

Shane doesn't seem to know what to think

Freestyle segment with Billy Kidman, Torrie Wilson, Shane Helms, The MexiCruisers and Eric Bischoff - (46 rated)

Match 5:

Elix Skipper (with Kid Romeo) vs Rob Van Dam (with Bill Alfonso) - Non Title match

WCW THEMES: Elix Skipper "Primetime Elix Skipper" - YouTube

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

JJ Dillon explains this match might be a non-title match but if Elix Skipper gets the win in this match he WILL get a shot at Rob Van Dam's United States championship so whilst he might be an underdog he's got a chance to get his hands on the US Championship so some might say he's got more motivation than RVD in this match

Curt Hennig says if RVD is the competitor he thinks he is to be a champion like that you have to be motivated no matter the match and he'll be motivated not to have to defend his title if he doesn't have to

Elix Skipper comes flying out the gates and gives a good account of himself but especially with the experience of Alfonso on the outside RVD is no match for Skipper and he soon gets the win.

Rob Van Dam wins via pinfall - (8.19) - (72 rated)

Roddy Piper interview with Sandman, Dreamer and Sabu

The 3rd and final Real Talk with Roddy tonight sees Piper sitting down with Sandman, Dreamer and Sabu in the same diner from earlier. Tommy Dreamer has a beer. Sandman has a beer and is smoking. Sabu just sits there looking peaceful but angry at the same time.

Piper says they've heard a lot from the so called Extreme Alliance today. You 3 were as violent at Big Bang! as anyone else. Do you not think you demonstrated why you aren't on national television?

The Sandman says Piper does it not look like there's a camera crew here to you? Does it not look like this is going to go out live on Nitro later tonight? Sandman says they did whatever it takes to succeed and if that means taking a kendo stick and violently beating up the WCW roster and the big boss himself Shane McMahon too... well that's just business! Business! Shane McMahon wants to be a business man like his Daddy don't he?

People say to me Sandman... how'd you think you're gonna get hired by whacking the boss off the stage like that?? Well hell... ain't that what Steve Austin's been doing to his Daddy?? Seems like people like to see that to me. Seems like Shane McMahon's own Daddy been making him dive and fall off stages and s**** for years too... people like violence... this business is a violent business... but violence makes money and if Shane McMahon likes money he knows what he gotta do...

Piper says on the subject of violence Sabu you put the WCW World Heavyweight Champion through a table viciously on Sunday... what is it they call you?

Homicidal? Genocidal?

Tommy Dreamer says HE IS THE HOMICIDAL, SUICIDAL, GENOCIDAL, DEATH-DEFYING MANIAC...SABU!!! And he showed the world that it's not just the Hardly Boys who can make a name for themselves putting people through tables! He was putting people through tables long before "TEAM EXTREME" or those long-haired losers from Canada started doing it!!

Sabu then addresses the camera and says AND D-VON... BUBBA... You think we don't see you two making out like tables are your gimmick... you're a bunch of traitors too boys! I was putting people through tables on national television before you boys even saw a table!!

Some of the WCW fans might well remember I was in WCW in 1995 with my Uncle by my side... but WCW didn't know what to do with me... they didn't respect me... so I had to leave and make a name for myself elsewhere and I did just that... but I'm done with that... look at me... I'm not a young man in the wrestling business... I ain't got another 10-15 years in this game... but the few years I do have left I intend to go out with a bang and put as many damn bastards through as many damn tables as possible and if that's the World Champion, US Champion, Tag Team Champions... some enhancement talent jobber just there for a try out... I don't care dammit! This time WCW you WILL respect me and I ain't going anywhere this time!

Piper asks Tommy Dreamer why he turned up at that Nitro to punch Mike Awesome and help Terry Funk... he says they sure didn't help Terry Funk at Big Bang... he's so banged up he can't be at Nitro tonight... do they not feel bad about that?

Dreamer says he punched Mike Awesome because Mike Awesome is an asshole!

He says they didn't go out to hurt Terry Funk but Funk got in there way... he chose a side... he chose WCW so if he's not with them then he's against them! Same goes for every other ex-ECW guy in the WCW roster... if they ain't with The Extreme Alliance... then they will get taken out like all the rest of 'em!

The Sandman then addresses the camera and says once again...

Shane! Shane I know you want to get your hands on me! Rich guy like you ain't used to someone like me getting one over on you! I'm begging you Shane... any place... any time... you name it! We'll be there to fight you and any one else... we're throwing out the challenge... THE EXTREME ALLIANCE... VS YOUR TOP GUYS... IF WE WIN WE GET GOLD-PLATED WCW CONTRACTS!!! IF WE LOSE... WHICH WE AIN'T GONNA... BUT IF WE LOSE... HELL, MAYBE WE'LL EVEN LEAVE YOU ALONE AND GO AND CAUSE YOUR DADDY SOME TROUBLE INSTEAD...

In the ring JJ Dillon introduces the newwwwwwwww WCW World Tag Team Champions.... Animal and Hawk... THE ROAD WARRIORS!!!!

Road Warriors Theme Song - YouTube

Animal and Hawk come to the ring with their belts on motorbikes in their full ring gear

Animal and Hawk in the ring to cut a promo.

Animal says he's so glad they came back for one last run. They put their careers on the line to get a shot at the World Tag Team titles and it was all worth it! The thrill and the adrenaline... we know a lot of people thought this was the end of the road for the Road Warriors... but we're still here and we're still fighting! I'm back fighting with my good friend... my brother in this business Hawk... and together we are unstoppable!

Hawk looks overwhelmed by the fans response.

Hawk says he's so thankful and pleased they've got the world titles one last time. Hawk says he's had health issues recently and he didn't know if he could realistically get in the ring again and if he could whether he'd still be at that level to compete with the best... let alone win championship gold again in WCW.

Hawk on the mic says there was that moment in the match where he thought they lost... where he thought their careers were over. He said his whole career flashed before his eyes... and you know what I thought in that moment Hawk says... you'd think I'd have been scared... or I'd have been sad... but in that moment... I felt... closure.

I thought in that moment my career is done... it's over... I had a good run... now I can go home and retire with my family in peace...

Animal buts in BUT ITS NOT OVER!! WE WON THAT MATCH AND WE'RE STILL GOING!!

The fans celebrate

Hawk doesn't.

Hawk on the mic says to Animal.

Animal... I love you brother... I know you wanted this chance to win the titles again and for us to have one last run... I'm looking down at these titles... that moment at Big Bang... the ovation we got that night and that've got tonight here in Memphis...

For me... having won these titles again... it sorta feels like the only way is down for me now... I can't go like I used to... my health isn't great...

Animal says what are you saying?!

Hawk takes off his iconic spikes and lays them on the floor in the ring.

"I'm saying Animal, we didn't lose that match at Big Bang!... we don't have to end our careers... but... but now I get to go out on my own terms... as a champion... not as some over the hill washed up old bum past his prime... what I'm saying Animal is that this doesn't have to be the end of the road for you... but this is the end of the road for me."

The crowd is shocked.

Animal is shocked

Hawk gives Animal a hug, is very emotional, Animal gets emotional too.

Hawk leaves his WCW World Tag Team championship belt next to his spikes on the floor in the ring then leaves the ring... he gets onto his bike and after the fans cheer some more he rides off and leaves the ring...

Johnny Ace and Eric Bischoff in Shane's office when in bursts Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo

Sean O'Haire & Chuck Palumbo are furious.

They both rant about how The Road Warriors took their belts and now they're retiring anyway?! It's a conspiracy god dammit!

Bischoff tries to calm them down. He says he didn't even want The Road Warriors in the match! It was all Johnny Ace and Shane! Johnny Ace not happy.

Johnny Ace said he had no idea Hawk would pull that and he didn't think Animal did either judging by his reaction.

Sean O'Haire says surely that means the titles are vacated or forfeited?? Or there should be some sort of handicap match with Animal next week if he won't vacate them??

Booker says he's sorry he can't be there tonight but he wasn't medically cleared to compete or... do much of anything really. He looks mad as hell.

He says this Extreme Alliance or whatever it is will pay for what they have done to Booker, to the boys and girls in the back, to Shane, to WCW! Booker says they got no respect for anything or anyone but put him in a ring with any one of them and he will teach them some respect!

Booker says he'll be back on Nitro next week and the Extreme Alliance better hope they ain't there as there will be hell to pay if they are!

Main Event / Match 7:

JJ Dillon on commentary hypes up how Johnny Ace has arranged this match for DDP & Kanyon to take out some frustrations after Big Bang! JJ says these guys weren't involved in the attacks they are ex-ECW Alumni and that unlike the Extreme Alliance these two chaps have been given handshake rolling contracts with WCW and if they impress in their period of time in the company maybe unlike the Extreme Alliance they might even get permanent jobs here...

DDP & Kanyon vs The B.W.O

After the initial shock from the crowd/DDP and Kanyon at this bizarre sequence of events the match begins.

DDP and Kanyon dominate the match but The B.W.O don't end up looking like complete bums as whilst Blue Meanie takes a lot of the offence, Nova gets a hot tag half way into the match and Nova impresses the announcers and seemingly DDP too as he gets in a fair amount of offence and counters looking good whilst he does it.

In the end DDP gets a Diamond Cutter on Blue Meanie and DDP & Kanyon get the win

DDP & Kanyon win via pinfall - (10.09) - (64 rated)

The show ends with JJ Dillon reminding everyone to tune in next week where Shane, Booker T and more will be back and we're sure to find out more about what will be happening with the ongoing controversy with the Extreme Alliance. He thanks Stevie Ray and Curt Hennig for filling in on commentary this week.

DDP ends the show looking into the camera shouting "WHERE YOU AT BOYS?! WHERE YOU AT?! I DON'T SEE YOU HERE TONIGHT?! MAYBE NEXT WEEK? COME FIND US!!"

Stevie Ray

It is being reported that Stevie Ray, who was on commentary this past week with JJ Dillon and Curt Hennig as a one off due to the regular announce team seemingly kayfabe given the night off, did actually get a shoot injury during the recent angle with the stars now being dubbed "The Extreme Alliance"

Stevie Ray reportedly broke his wrist parrying a chair shot in the angle and the bandage he had on his wrist last night was legit. It is not clear how big an involvement Stevie Ray may have had in this angle, but it is clear that Stevie Ray will be unable to compete in matches for the foreseeable, with one source suggesting he is definitely out of WCW'S upcoming PPV, The Great American Bash, live from Philadelphia in a few weeks due to take place Sunday 24 June 2001.

Road Warrior Hawk - Wikipedia

The End of the Road for Hawk

From what we understand the angle on this week's Nitro where Road Warrior Hawk seemingly hung up his boots for good is considered to be a genuine retirement angle. Hawk was diagnosed with a health condition last year and it is thought that he wanted one last big match with Animal before calling it quits in wrestling and spending retirement with his family.

Hawk apparently wasn't particularly keen on the idea of winning the belts and then retiring, but Shane McMahon, who is a big Road Warriors fan was keen to give Hawk one last big moment in wrestling before he hung up his boots for good.

It is thought that his tag-team partner Animal still wants to continue wrestling and from what we understand the ongoing angle will see Animal start a "new" Road Warriors team with an us of unknown wrestler. What we do know is that his new partner is someone with tag-team pedigree who it is said has been a tag team champion in either WWF or WCW in the last few years.

Shane McMahon was absent from Nitro this week in Memphis and there are reports online that this was due to a legitimate injury picked up in the bump he took falling from the stage at Big Bang!

Shane is not thought to be seriously injured but he does have a heavily swollen calf muscle that at least on Wednesday night left him in a position where he couldn't travel to the show. It is thought that the plan had always been for Shane to be off-screen and "kayfabe" injured and off Nitro selling the results of The Extreme Alliance's attack, much like announcers Tony Schiavone, Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson who were given the night off to sell their own injuries from the attack - but the bump Shane took did legitimately injury him enough that he was forced to take the night off and not be at the show in person.

It is still thought that he was heavily involved in the booking and running of the show but a lot of the hands on aspects of the show were left to Johnny Ace, Eric Bischoff and JJ Dillon.

As announced on Nitro this week Shane will be fit to be at the next Nitro where it is thought he has a big announcement about both a big match for The Great American Bash and also the bringing back of a currently inactive WCW championship belt.

Nitro Episode 6:

Wednesday 06 June 2001

Live late-night on FX

4,885 crowd in Boston, Massachusetts

--------

Show opens up with Linkin Park's 'Runaway'

Runaway - Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory) - YouTube

-----------

For the Love of Money - YouTube

The announcers Tony Schiavone, Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson all make small talk about being back on Nitro after last week but it's not as exciting or upbeat as their usual start of the show banter as Shane McMahon comes out to entrance stage hobbling a bit. The crowd pop for him.

Shane says I'm back and clearly we've got a lot to talk about.

First of all Shane says he wants to talk about something positive. Shane says we've got some good women's wrestling talent in this company and it's only right that they also have a championship belt to fight for. Therefore, at The Great American Bash we will see the return of the WCW Women's World Championship.

Shane announces that at The Great American Bash it will be a Triangle match for the vacant belt with a 6 woman tournament kick starting later on tonight on Nitro.

There will be 3 qualification matches across the next 3 Nitro's with the 3 winners facing off to be the WCW Women's World champion at The Great American Bash.

The qualifiers are as follows:

April Hunter vs Stacy Keibler
Malia Hoska vs Meiko Satomura
Akira Hokuto vs Torrie Wilson

Shane then says, now, for slightly less positive news.

As I'm sure you're all aware... we had a bit of an "Invasion" at Big Bang!

That was not how I wanted the first WCW PPV of the Shane McMahon era to end.

To address the rumours of whether The Extreme Alliance are paid off by my father or Paul Heyman or are just working by themselves to try and get a contract here in WCW... I don't know. To tell you the truth... I don't care.

When I didn't offer a contract to any of those guys... it was just business... but now... they've made it personal!

Shane says he will not sanction any kind of match at The Great American Bash that gives the opportunity for any of those low-life scumbags to get their hands on a WCW contract. They made this personal and when you make things personal with a McMahon you don't get to set the terms... but he does accept that there's a lot of boys in the back... myself included... who would love to get their hands on some of those guys after what they did at Big Bang! and he's sure the fans would like to see that too!

Shane says he will sanction a match at The Great American Bash but it will be on his terms.

Shanes says at The Great American bash PPVs of old there used to a good way of settling multi-man scores like this. He says that if the Extreme Alliance want a War with WCW... then it is a WAR he will give them and then he says he has scheduled the main event for The Great American Bash to be...

WAR GAMES!!!!

Shane announces that at The Great American Bash main event it will be 5 WCW guys vs 5 Extreme Alliance guys in a WAR GAMES match... there will be no contracts on the line... just LIFE AND LIMB!!!!

Shane says he's sure fans are wondering who the 5 WCW guys to compete in the War Games match will be... well by the end of tonight's show you will have your answer he says!

The first man on Team WCW... will be none other than your own WCW World Heavyweight Champion... BOOKER T!!!

Crowd pops

The second man on Team WCW... will be a man who is just as loved by the WCW fans and will want to get revenge on them more than most for what happened at Big Bang!... joining Booker t will be his Big Bang! opponnent... DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE!!!

Woah says Tony Schiavone on commentary, Booker T AND DDP!! That's some start to Team WCW!

The 3rd man on Team WCW Shane says... is a man who has been there, done it and seen it all... he's undefeated in WCW since I took over... he's been a real company man since I took over and last week he even filled in on commentary at very short notice... the 3rd man is... CURT HENNIG!!!

That's some team they're putting together Arn says. Booker T, DDP & Curt Hennig!

The 4th man, Shane says, will be another man who is undefeated in WCW since I got here... some call him the best technical wrestler in the world today... we might not see eye to eye on this great country the U.S.A but I know his loyalty lies with WCW here... the 4th man is... LANCE STORM!!!

Oh boy! Tony says. Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig and Lance Storm! Who will the 5th man be?

Shane then says and the 5th man...

Crowd anticipate this...

IS AS OF YET UNDECIDED! Shane says.

You know I thought about throwing myself in, nepotism I know, but I'm just not sure if I'm going to be fit enough to compete at The Great American Bash... so here's my idea for the 5th man...

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

RVD comes out with Alfonso and the WCW United States Championship.

The commentators say is RVD going to be the 5th man?? Wow!!

Shane looks surprised.

RVD gets on the mic and says look Shane I don't know what you mean by the 5th man is undecided... whether you were unsure if I was up to the job or whether you could trust me to fight The Extreme Alliance... but trust me Shane... I'm the WCW United States Championship now and ever since I joined here it seems those guys from ECW think I'm some kind of traitor. They banged me up good at Big Bang! and trust me I want to teach them a lesson just as much as any other guy in the locker-room who might have been in WCW for 3-4 years instead of 3-4 weeks!

They've picked a fight with the wrong guy and if you need someone to help beat some sense in them there's no better guy for the job than...

ROB....VAN....DAM!!!

The crowd pop at this and chant along with RVD.

Shane notices this and looks like he may well just give the 5th spot to Rob Van Dam.

Lance Storm WCW Titantron - "Team Canada" - YouTube

Mike Awesome comes out with Lance Storm behind him. This is the first time Mike Awesome is seen without his eye patch and neck brace but this time he seems to have bandages and visible bruises from the kendo shots he took at Big Bang!

Mike Awesome on the mic says RVD I respect everything you did in ECW and everything you've done here in WCW. But let's be honest. Shane can't trust you. The boys in the back can't trust you. WCW can't trust you to go up against these guys... look at that United States Championship belt... you only got that because one of your boys, even if they deny it, one of your boys took Booker T out in the parking lot! How do we know they didn't just go soft on you at Big Bang! and you were feigning injury?? Mike says nobody has a bigger gripe with the Extreme Alliance than him and Shane should let Awesome join his Team Canada tag team partner Lance Storm and be the 5th man at Big Bang!

Shane says well that's a good point you make Mike, in-fact you both make good points, so I think that actually...

Terry Funk - Theme - YouTube

Terry Funk comes out. Mike Awesome and Lance Storm stare off at him.

Mike Awesome says Funk shouldn't be anywhere near contention. He's an old man now. Lance Storm beat his ass at Big Bang! and then he got his ass beat by his old friends.

Terry Funk says they were his friends and he had a lot of respect for them but they beat him up all the same, he might not be as agile or quick or fit as he once was but he still has his pride! And he backs down from no man! He doesn't expect Shane to give him anything on a plate because he's never got anything on a plate all his career but given the chance to fight for a place in the WCW team he will take it and get what he deserves.

Shane says well that's a great point Terry on the subject of fighting for a place...

WCW Chris Kanyon 2nd Theme - YouTube

Kanyon comes out and says to Funk and the others he's never been handed anything in his entire life. Kanyon says unlike Funk he wasn't born into this business to a promoter and former wrester's family. He fought his way into this business and will keep fighting to get ther recognition he deserves.

He says if Shane puts the 4 of them in a ring for a place in the WCW Team he will stand tall by the end of it.

Shane is really annoyed now. Has a go at Kanyon especially for interuptting him.

Shane says however, I will put the 4 of you in the ring tonight... but it will not be limited to just you 4! That's right because later tonight the main event will be an OPEN CHALLENGE BATTLE ROYALE... it will be Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome, Terry Funk, Kanyon and any god damn contracted WCW talent in the back who wants to fight it out for a spot in the War Games team at The Great American Bash!

This is a high flying match to start the show with all 8 guys getting in some offence as the match progresses. Towards the end of the match an over confident Shannon Moore tags himself in and in the confusion afterwards the MexiCruisers and La Parka capitalise and get the victory when Juventud gets the win through a roll up on Shannon Moore.

Roddy Piper segment "Real Talk with Roddy" he's live from Philadelphia where The Great American Bash will be held and he's got The Extreme Alliance with him.

Piper says well guys Shane's given you the match, isn't that what you wanted??

Don Callis says whilst they're pleased to have the match Shane didn't meet their demand that if they win they will get WCW contracts but it's obvious that's because Shane McMahon is a coward and he knows they will lose.

Joey Styles agrees and says their 6 guys will smash and destroy WCW's 6 guys!

Piper corrects him and says no that's not right, there's only 5 in the War Games match, you'll have to choose which 5 of your 6 guys will compete.

This seems to strike up some conflict as Sandman, Sabu, Dreamer, Corino and The Chair Swingin' Freaks get in a debate about this.

Sandman says, well hang on, the 4 of us (pointing to himself, Sabu, Dreamer and Corino) were all ECW World Heavyweight champions... so it's a given that we'll all be in the team.

I say the Freaks draw straws for it!

Joey Styles says woah wait hang on a minute who died and made you king of the world??

You got a better idea? Sabu asks him

Joey says this match is about team work and The Chair Swingin' Freaks are the best team we have.

Corino agrees with Sandman, those guys haven't been world champions, it should be one of those who misses out not them.

Balls says fine fine but on one condition...

Dreamer says what?

Balls says don't do straws... I hate straws! We'll rock, paper scissors for it!

The rest of them look a bit baffled but they agree to this

Piper says well why don't you boys rock, paper and scissor for it live on Nitro right now??

Sandman looks embarrassed and he says well s***, this is real block buster television ain't it!

Balls and Axl rock, paper, scissor for it and Axl loses.

Shane McMahon's office with Shane, Johnny Ace, Eric Bischoff and Road Warrior Animal who has both WCW World Tag Team championship belts

Shane says, well this is one hell of a mess we've got on our hands here isn't it?

The answer is simple Eric Bischoff says. Animal vacates the belts and we give them back to Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo! Solved!

Animal not happy

Johnny Ace says that's not fair on Animal who holds them. At the very least he should be given the chance to defend them in a handicap match against the previous champions when they get their rematch. Or a chance to find a new partner.

Bischoff says Johnny would say that as Animal is his brother. What are you proposing, he gets a new tag team partner and we get a New Road Warriors? That's a stupid idea! Almost as stupid as Shane's idea to bring back a Women's Title!

Shane has a pop at Bischoff for this.

Animal says whatever happens he will not vacate the belts. If he has to go down fighting for them he's prepared to do that. If he has to go out and find a new partner he will try.

Shane says there's interesting options either way. Shane asks Johnny how he's getting on with new signings. Has he got the BIG surprise for Great American Bash wrapped up yet? Johnny says it's looking close. What about the ex-tag team guy from over there?? Shane asks. The ex tag team champion in WWF that you wanted me to sign is ready to debut next week Shane says Johnny.

Interesting, Shane says. Eric's idea for a New Road Warriors, now that is interesting isn't it. We've got a classic tag team guy now without a partner and a modern day tag team guy coming over without a tag team partner. Now I was thinking he could come in as a singles guy... but that is a good idea.

Bischoff says it's certainly not his idea for Animal to start a new tag team and on the contrary he opposses it on a cellular level.

Shane says yes but either way... what do you say Animal... next week... I'll put you in a tag team match with this mystery new potential partner for you in a non-title match... just to get you two acquainted... and if it all goes well... at The Great American Bash it will be The "new" Road Warriors versus Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo... the winners come out of The Bash as WCW World Tag Team champions!

Animal agrees happily, he'll team with anyone if it means he gets a chance to stay as champion and he's looking forward who Shane has in mind.

Shane walks out the office happily with Bischoff not happy

Animal whispers to Johnny, so brother, who's this guy?

Johnny says legally I can't say anything yet, wait and see until next week!

Tony says you can't blame Kid Kash if he was legitimately hurt, but Arn says he was being a coward and Tajiri ought to teach him a lesson here tonight.

The two have a good match with Kid Kash getting in a decent amount of offence but he can't keep up with Tajiri's physicality and increased aggression.

JJ Dillon interview with Sean O'Haire & Chuck Palumbo

JJ asks Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo how they're feeling about the ongoing situation with the WCW World Tag Team championship. What do you have to say to all the WCW fans about this?

Sean O'Haire says it's a complete disgrace what's happened to them and that they should be given the titles back, but he's not telling WCW fans anything they don't already know.

Chuck Palumbo disagrees and says they've never been handed anything in their time in WCW and they're willing to fight to get back the WCW World Tag Team titles and he's confident they can do just that when given the chance.

Road Warrior Animal comes into set.

Animal says he doesn't know who his partner is but whoever it is he's going to make sure he keeps the belts away from you moaning cowards especially you Sean O'Haire. Animal says tonight he's focused and going to take part in the Battle Royale as a champion of WCW to win the right to defend WCW's honour at The Great American Bash as well as the tag team titles.

Terry Funk wishes RVD luck in the match tonight. RVD says he's sure the best man will win one way or the other, he's not happy with the Extreme Alliance and he's sure Funk isn't either... Funk offers him an alliance in the match... RVD says Funk has to understand it's every man for himself out there tonight but he's happy to have Funk as an ally in the match at the start

Lance Storm and Mike Awesome walk in

Mike Awesome says he doesn't trust RVD and he certainly doesn't trust Funk. Storm says Funk is obviously past his best now so even if he could be trusted it would be like having a 4 on 5 handicap match in The Extreme Alliance's favour if Funk did somehow get on the team.

Funk wants to fight both of them but RVD calms him down and tells Funk to save it for the ring later.

As Windham and Rotunda enter they are jumped by Shawn Stasiak & Mark Jindrak. Stasiak and Jindrak get the better of them with the surprise, but the 4 eventually start brawling out into the arena. The announcers mention this may well now be a 26 man Battle Royale as if those 4 men are not in the ring at the start of the match they will be disqualified.

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

The match starts just before we see Windham & Rotunda and Stasiak & Jindrak brawling backstage and the announcer confirms those 4 men have been disqualified from the match and it will just be a 26 man battle royale.

As they say this the match begins.

David Flair is chucked out early by Mike Awesome

Kid Romeo is eliminated next by Fit Finlay, Dave Taylor and Tajiri

Billy Kidman and Shane Helms are next eliminated. The two seem to look to make a pact to work together are initially fighting, but as they are discussing this alliance they are dumped out by Rob Van Dam and Terry Funk who catch them both off guard

Mike Sanders gets dumped out by Kanyon

Kwee Wee gets eliminated by Hugh Morrus

Sean O'Haire gets eliminated by Animal. O'Haire is furious by this and gets on the apron having a go at Animal. Animal stands his ground and doesn't get what the issue is but in the mean-time he is eliminated by Chuck Palumbo.

Chuck Palumbo stands tall but as he's gloating he gets eliminated himself by Rob Van Dam

Mike Awesome eliminates Jason Jett

Hugh Morrus eliminates Dave Taylor

Kanyon eliminates Don & Ron Harris

Tajiri and Fit Finlay eliminate Kaz Hayashi

Terry Funk eliminates Jimmy Yang

Mike Awesome eliminates Jamie Knoble

Hugh Morrus eliminates Lash LeRoux

Kanyon eliminates Reno and then Chavo Guerrero Jr sneaks up behind him and almost dumps out Kanyon in a big shock. Kanyon reacts to this and eliminates his old nemesis Chavo Guerero Jr too.

Rob Van Dam eliminates Elix Skipper

Mike Awesome eliminates AJ Styles

Terry Funk and Rob Van Dam eliminates Finlay. Tajiri then comes in hard on Funk but Funk and RVD gets the better of Taijiri too and throw him out also.

Just 5 men remain with Kanyon, Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome, Hugh Morrus and Terry Funk left standing.

Hugh Morrus goes on the attack trying to take out Rob Van Dam. Terry Funk helps Van Dam out whilst Kanyon and Awesome are having a big brawl on the other side of the ring.

Rob Van Dam and Terry Funk eliminate Hugh Morrus

There's just 4 men left now as they all retreat to a corner each and stare each other down.

Kanyon and Mike Awesome seem to have unfinished business from their brawl just now and eye each other up again with the fans excited to see the two big men go at it.

RVD and Terry Funk look at each other. They've helped each other out in the match but RVD shrugs his shoulders as if to say well now it's every man for himself and we will have to fight it out.

BUT WAIT A MINUTE!!!

Hugh Morrus slides back into the ring, grabs Rob Van Dam and throws him out of the ring!!!!

RVD is eliminated by Hugh Morrus who himself was already eliminated.

RVD looks up shocked. Bill Alfonso is blowing his whistle. The announcers are shocked that RVD, who had the most eliminations in the match has been dumped out unfairly by Hugh Morrus who was just bitter he had been knocked out. RVD looks fuming but he doesn't have time to react as Hugh Morrus starts fighting him on the outside.

Meanwhile in the ring Terry Funk looks on kinda bewildered by what's going on whilst Kanyon and Mike Awesome trade blows still.

Eventually it comes to a standstill and Kanyon throws Awesome over the ropes. Kanyon thinks he's eliminated him but Awesome clings on. Kanyon hits the ropes potentially to gain momentum to come back and strike Awesome who is standing on the apron, but Funk (who Kanyon seems to have forgotten about) intercepts Kanyon and uses his own momentum to help throw him over the ring and eliminate him!

Kanyon is devastated and furious with himself for the lapse of concentration at ringside. He thinks about getting in the ring to have a go at Funk but DDP comes down to the ring to console his friend. Kanyon is crestfallen and not happy at all,.

30 have now become 2 as Mike Awesome and Terry Funk are the final men remaining to see who will represent Team WCW in the War Games match at The Great American Bash!

There has been a few huge shocks in this match with both Rob Van Dam and Kanyon now both eliminated who many would have had as favourites to win this match.

Lance Storm banging on the apron and shouting encouragement at Mike Awesome

Awesome and Funk fight for a few minutes with neither getting the better of the other.

Funk looks like he might have got the better of Awesome when Lance Storm interferes and helps Awesome out.

Awesome then throws Funk over the apron but Funk somehow manages to cling on.

Awesome and Funk go at it again now on the apron with Funk desperate to try and eliminate Awesome against the odds.

Funk puts up a hell of a fight but with Storm watching on Awesome gets a big right hand in on Funk and Funk crashes to the floor.

WCW have their 2nd PPV of the Shane McMahon era coming up in a few weeks, with The Great American Bash set to see a return to it's history with a 5 on 5 War Games match between Team WCW and The Extreme Alliance.

Team WCW has been determined and it will feature WCW World Heavyweight champion Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig and Team Canada (Lance Storm & Mike Awesome).

1 man who will not feature in Team WCW is the WCW United States Champion, Rob Van Dam, who was eliminated from the qualifying battle royale by the already eliminated Hugh Morrus last week. Terry Funk and Kanyon will also be two members of the roster very disappointed to have missed out to Mike Awesome who won the qualifying Battle Royale for the final spot this past week on Nitro.

Whilst Shane McMahon has not given The Extreme Alliance what they wanted, which was WCW contracts on the line if they won, you have to think The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, Steve Corino and Ball Mahoney will be wanting to get the win on WCW territory.

The only other confirmed match so far is the Women's Triangle match for the vacant WCW Women's World Championship. Currently the bracket looks like:

Stacy Keibler vs The winner of Malia Hoska vs Meiko Satomura vs The winner of Akira Hokuto vs Torrie Wilson.

Tony Schiavone on comms says it's Wednesday night folks and you know what that means...IT'S WCW NITRO LIVE FROM SEATTLE!!

We've got a great show for you tonight and a heck of a match to start things off for you-

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

Tony comments that to his knowledge the opening match does not involve the WCW United States Champion... but Rob Van Dam appears to be making his way to the ring... potentially not happy about his elimination in the Battle Royale last week?

RVD comes out with the US title and Bill Alfonso and he gets a mic in the ring

RVD says he was robbed of a spot on Team WCW by Hugh Morrus and so if Hugh Morrus is a man he'll get his ass out here and pick a hand!

For the Love of Money - YouTube

Shane comes out and says he agrees with Rob that the way he was eliminated from the Battle Royale wasn't right but Mike Awesome won that match and he's on the team.

RVD says he accepts that but demands Shane gives him a match with Hugh Morrus to get his revenge. RVD says he doesn't care what it takes, even if he has to put his WCW United States championship on the line... he wants a match with Morrus whatever it takes.

Shane says that given Hugh Morrus' actions in cheating RVD out of the match Johnny Ace as Head of Talent relations alongside Shane and Bischoff agreed to suspend Hugh Morrus for 1 week so he will not be here tonight.

Fans not happy.

RVD says he's a fighting champion so if he can't fight Hugh Morrus he's putting out an open challenge tonight for anyone in the back to have a shot at the U.S Title.

Terry Funk - Theme - YouTube

Funk comes out and says he appreciated RVD's help in the Battle Royale last week, he's got a lot of respect for him... what about it? He's never won the WCW United States Championship and it would be an honour to hold the belt.

Shane makes the match!

Tonight's main event will be Rob Van Dam vs Terry Funk for the WCW United States Championship!

Shane says to fans that later tonight we will also see Team WCW in action as they prepare for their 5 on 5 War Games match at The Great American Bash!

Match 1:

Fit's Fight Club (Fit Finlay, Dave Taylor & Tajiri) vs The MexiCruisers (Juventud Guerrera, Super Crazy and Psychosis)

Finlay's 2006 v2 Titantron Entrance Video feat. "Lambeg v2" Theme [HD] - YouTube

Mexicools - theme and Titantron Video - YouTube

The announcers hype up this match. Hot off the tails of their win last week against the WCW Cruiserweight champion Shane Helms, Billy Kidman and 3 Count, Juventud Guerrera is now joint number 1 contender for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship alongside Billy Kidman. It's not clear yet when that match will take place, but either way this is a big 6-man match to open the show with The MexiCruisers and Fit's Fight Club both in decent form recently.

Shane Helms and Billy Kidman are on commentary for this match.

A solid match to start the show with both teams getting in a decent amount of offence.

The MexiCruisers extra speed and stamina over Finlay and Taylor seems to be putting the match in their direction, when towards the end of the match Shannon Moore and Evan Karagias cause a distraction at ringside, much to Helms and Kidman's surprise which sees Tajiri get a roll-up win over Super Crazy.

Fit's Fight Club wins via pinfall - (7.42) - (61 rating)

----------

After the match we see all 3 of the MexiCruisers chase after 3 Count with Shane Helms reluctantly legging it whilst Billy Kidman looks on a bit awkwardly about what's just happened.

----------

JJ Dillon in the back says that someone quite unexpected has requested some interview time with him.

'Sinister' James Mitchell enters the set looking evil in a dark suit.

JJ Dillon asks what the hell he's doing here in WCW?!

'Sinister' James Mitchell says he'll tell him why the hell he's here, why the hell else would he be here but the same reason as everyone else? To make money, JJ!

Mitchell says as one of this business's most successful managers he's only a call away if there's anyone on the roster looking for someone to take them to the next level... but for now he's already got his first client.

JJ asks who it is??

Mitchell states that at The Great American Bash there's a match for the as of now vacant WCW Women's World Championship... he states times are changing and he can tell WCW is about to see a new landscape of women's wrestling... he's managed to secure as his client a former WCW Women's World champion... and next week he will be at ringside watching on as Akira Hokuto secures her place in the triangle match for the belt at The Great American Bash

'Sinister' James Mitchell says there is nothing more American than helping ensure one of Japan's top talents holds the Japanese flag high at The Great American Bash... that right there JJ, that's the American dream.

Shane, Eric Bischoff and Johnny Ace in Shane's office

Barry Windham and Mike Rotunda come in, they're both annoyed that they lost on the chance to represent Team WCW at War Games because of Shawn Stasiak and Mark Jindrak

Eric Bischoff says it was their own fault they shouldn't have got into a fight before the match. Windham and Rotunda furious at this.

Shane tells them to calm down.

Shane says if we're going to beat The Extreme Alliance generally we can't keep having all these petty feuds between ourselves. Shane says he needs Team WCW to get some 5-on-5 practice before the War Games match at The Great American Bash. With that in mind... later tonight it will be Team WCW vs Barry Windham, Mike Rotunda, AJ Styles (Windham and Rotunda seem happy enough with this)... and Shawn Stasiak and Mark Jindrak!!

Booker T, DDP and Curt Hennig backstage

Booker T with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship belt is getting ready for their match later tonight. DDP and Curt Hennig there too. DDP asks Curt how he's feeling about the War Games match. Curt says he's ready to get some revenge on The Extreme Alliance and whilst he's got one eye on that big gold belt of Booker's he's willing to put that aside for the time being whilst they focus on beating The Extreme Alliance.

DDP says Curt will have to get in the queue, he should get the first shot at Booker given he never lost at Big Bang!

Booker says they can both back off. DDP never lost... but he never won neither... and Curt hasn't done anything to deserve a shot at the belt either... they can leave the title talk until after they've put those Extreme Suckers down at Great American Bash!

Both DDP and Curt Hennig seem to accept this but the 3 lock eyes at the end of the promo after all looking at the belt

Before the match Terry Taylor comes out in a Hawaiian shirt and cuts a promo introducing Malia Hosaka. Terry Taylor says he was enjoying partial retirement in Hawaii and he was done with wrestling but then in a local gym he saw Malia Hosaka training and they got talking and she said she was signing with WCW and wanted to help put Hawaii on the map by becoming WCW World Women's Champion. Taylor says he's been a champion in multiple promotions and with his experience and Malia's raw ability they'll make a fine team.

Meiko Satomura - "My Own Destiny" (NXT UK THEME) - YouTube

This is a balanced match between face and face with both women getting in an equal amount of offence. It looks like maybe Meiko Satomura has the better of it when Stacy Keibler comes out from the back and distracts Meiko with Ricky Steamboat getting involved too. Malia Hosaka, with Terry Taylor's advice hits her finish with this distraction and then gets the win.

Don Callis says that it's not long now before Steve Corino and the rest of The Extreme Alliance show the world what they're missing out on.

Don Callis says if WCW had their top guys that were sitting at home collecting money then not a single member of Team WCW would even make their Top 5

Steve Corino warns that maybe the 5 guys on Team WCW still won't even make it to The Great American Bash...

Shane's office with just Eric Bischoff and Johnny Ace

The MexiCruisers all burst in shouting and screaming in broken English and Spanish

Eric Bischoff says shut up whilst Johnny Ace says tranquilo tranquilo

Juvi says he wants his title match with Shane Helms next week.

Bischoff says look given there's two of you as number 1 contender that means it will need to be a Triangle Match and that match won't take place next week... but Shane has confirmed that the match for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship will in-fact take place at The Great American Bash!

Juvi seems pretty happy with this but he says that Super Crazy and Psychosis want a match with 3 Count but 3 Count are babies and keep running away... Bischoff says hmmm, fine... next week it will be the 2 members of 3 Count... what's their names anyway? versus you two MexiCruisers!

As they walk off Eric Bischoff doesn't seem too happy but is glad that has got rid of them at least.

Suddenly Meiko Satomura and Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat come in

Ricky explains what happened and how Stacy Keibler cost Meiko the chance to compete for the WCW Women's World Championship.

Johnny Ace says he sympathises with the situation but it would be down to Eric really to sort this out.

Eric says to Ricky that if it was down to him there wouldn't even be a WCW Women's World Championship match... he doesn't care about women's wrestling and he doesn't care which women are in the match at The Great American Bash.

Ricky Steamboat says that's not fair as Meiko looks crestfallen

Eric Bischoff says life is not fair and then tells Meiko to get lost. She looks close to tears as she leaves with Steamboat not looking happy.

Mikey Whipwreck comes into set. Mikey says hi to Tajiri and Tajiri says hi back. Mikey says he's now got a rolling contract with WCW after impressing last week and says he was wondering if Tajiri wants to start tag-teaming with him again.

Tajiri seems to consider this when Fit Finlay answers for him and says if Mikey Whipwreck wants to team with Tajiri he'll have to join Fit's Fight Club first... and to join Fit's Fight club you've got to prove you can fight!

Whipwreck says he's up for the challenge and says why not Tajiri and Whipwreck vs Finlay and Taylor next week on Nitro!

Finlay says no way! You don't set the demands! Finlay says next week on Nitro it will be Fit's Fight Club vs Whipwreck and whatever 2 friends he can find... if he can't find anyone it will be 3 vs 1... if he can.. then 3 vs 3 and if Whipwreck gets a win then maybe he will think about letting him tag with Tajiri again...

The Harris Twins vs Road Warrior Animal & ????? - Non Title match

TNA: 2005 Harris Brothers Theme (Big Twins) - YouTube

Road Warriors Theme Song - YouTube

Tony on commentary mentions this is quite an extraodinary tag team match as we have the scenario where Animal doesn't even know who his partner will be. Road Warrior Animal, currently still the WCW World Tag Team champion... has been hand selected a new tag team partner by Shane McMahon after his old partner Hawk retired just days after they won the titles from Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo... but who is his partner going to be???

For the Love of Money - YouTube

Shane comes out and says he's sure everybody is excited to see who Animal's tag team partner is going to be

Shane says Animal's new partner is a multiple time tag team champion...

Shane says everybody loves The Road Warriors... but perhaps it's time for a new version of the Road Warriors... a modern iteration for a new age of fans...

Shane says that nobody could ever replace Hawk like for like... a Hawk is a hell of an animal... and Hawk was a loyal tag team partner... but what other animals are loyal? Well, Dog's are supposed to be the most loyal animals out there...

Shane says... ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages, WCW proudly brings to you...THE ROAD WARRIOR DOG BG James!!!!

Wait a minute! Tony says

Road Warrior Dog (Road Dogg) comes out on the stage with a live mic already in hand...

Road Warrior Dog says "Ohhhhh you didn't know... yo Animal had to call somebody.... this ain't The Old Road Warriors... this is The Nu Road Warriors for a New Age... The New Generation... "

Crowd cheers

Animal looks bemused at this development in the ring

Road Warrior Dog then says "I had to drop the double G in the Dog... but it turns out if you just add Warrior after the Road because WCW own the copyright for the Road Warrior name I can still go by Road Warrior Dog and we can't get sued... and Vince McMahon... if you're not down with that... I got two words for ya!!!"

Crowd loudly chant SUCK IT!!!

Road Warrior Dog gets in the ring and shakes hands with Road Warrior Animal ahead of the match.

The Harris Twins actually being a tag team means they look the better unit throughout this match as Animal and BG James seem to struggle to get to grips with being a team given their inexperience tagging together

BG James though especially has the backing of the crowd and their energy gives him a new lease of life and he manages to get a hot tag and get the win through a quick-thinking roll up on Don Harris

As the Nu Road Warriors are celebrating after the match Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo's music hits

Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire 2001 - "Freestyle Hombre" WWE WCW Entrance Theme - YouTube

Sean O'Haire especially is really annoyed. Sean says if this is the best that Animal has got then at The Great American Bash it will be light work for O'Haire and Palumbo to win the titles back. Every dog has it's day and Road Warrior Dog or BG James or whatever knock-off name you want to go by to avoid being sued... being sued will be the last of your problem when at The Great American Bash we'll add Animal to the retirement home like his buddy Hawk by giving him the beating of his life! But look Animal... I'm not telling you anything you don't already know...

Animal and BG James in the ring are both hot and annoyed at this. Palumbo looks on not too sure he completely agrees with how far O'Haire has gone with.

Announcers confirm that at The Great American Bash it will be The Nu Road Warriors vs Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo for the WCW World Tag Team Championships

Real Talk with Roddy Piper

The Sandman, Sabu and Tommy Dreamer

Tommy Dreamer says he's sure he's seen more of Roddy Piper in recent weeks than he has his own family.

Sabu says it's about time they stopped with the sit down interviews and started with dropping his legs on chairs for interviews and started dropping his legs through tables again!!!

The Sandman issues a warning to Team WCW.

Next week The Extreme Alliance have got tickets to Nitro... legally bought... hell, ain't like you guys would sell out a show now, is it?!

Tommy Dreamer says they better watch out as it's not just a scouting mission they've got planned!

This match gets a decent amount of time as Team WCW try to gel before War Games. Team Canada don't seem completely on the same page as the other guys with Mike Awesome forcing a tag in on Booker T at one point which annoys Booker T.

Windham and Rotunda look in good form, with AJ Styles also looking half decent, but Stasiak and Jindrak keep complaining they can't get a tag in when suddenly Rotunda accidentally knocks Stasiak off the apron.

This causes Stasiak to go crazy and he orders Jindrak to leave... they both leave the match and it ends up being 3 vs 5... the numbers game makes it easy for Team WCW and DDP ends up getting the win with a Diamond Cutter on AJ Styles

JJ says Shane has a big excitement for The Great American Bash but before that does he have any comment on The Extreme Alliance stating they'll be at Nitro next week!

Shane says to WCW fans and the locker-room don't worry we will not let them into the building whether they have a ticket or not and I'm not going to let them get in the way of my big announcement!

Shane says at The Great American Bash to open the show he will announce a big name and big money signing that they have now got signed and delivered despite competition from both Japan and his father!

Match 7 / Main Event:

Rob Van Dam (c) with Bill Alfonso vs Terry Funk for the WCW United States Championship.

Terry Funk - Theme - YouTube

Arn Anderson asks where Funk is as after 10-15 seconds of his music playing he's not come out. This is a big main event for the WCW United States Championship... where is he??

The camera cuts to gorilla where Funk seems to be in an altercation with Mike Awesome. Awesome seemingly still in gorilla from the previous match as Funk was entering. Several guys in the back trying to separate them.

Out of nowhere Mike Awesome choke-slams Terry Funk through a table!

Oh my god Tony says!

Rob Van Dam manages to come onto the scene and fights off Awesome and Lance Storm who are laughing at Funk

RVD is asking Funk if he's okay. There's a medic there with Funk asking him if he's okay... Funk eventually manages to get up and says he's still good to go...

RVD playing up to the crowd but once he gets in the ring he looks over at Funk and is a bit concerned for him

The ref blows the whistle

RVD is fresh and bang up for it with Funk already looking quite dazed and in a bad way. RVD rungs rings around Terry Funk for the opening 4-5 minutes with Funk getting in a bit of offence but RVD not looking too damaged by any of it.

Then from out of nowhere Funk hits a roll-up and gets a 2.5 count! RVD looks pretty shocked and after Funk has his fists up and is ready for the fight.

This near loss spurs RVD on to step up his game and from here on out whilst Funk is hanging on it's by the skin of his teeth.

Eventually RVD manages to get a huge kick in and then goes up for the Five Star Frog Splash and gets the win!

Rob Van Dam retains the WCW United States Championship via pinfall - (10.45) - (73 rated)

The show ends with RVD checking on Funk whilst Mike Awesome and Lance Storm can be seen at the top of the entrance ramp smiling at Funk having lost.

Awful injury for Eddie

Fans were left horrified last night on WWF's Smackdown which saw a horrific injury for Eddie Guerrero. It has been confirmed that Eddie Guerrero, just days after competing for the WWF title at King of the Ring, broke his neck in a match with Chris Jericho. It is thought this was just a freak accident and Chris Jericho is not being blamed for it, but this is a huge blow to WWF and Guerrero as Eddie will likely be out from wrestling for at least 12 months to recover.

Get well soon Eddie!

Nitro Episode 8:

Wednesday 20 June 2001

Live late-night on FX

5,100 crowd in Minneapolis, Minnesota

------

Show opens up with Linkin Park's 'Runaway'

Runaway - Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory) - YouTube

Tony Schiavone on comms says it's Wednesday night folks and you know what that means...IT'S WCW NITRO LIVE FROM MINNEAPOLIS!

This is the go home show for The Great American Bash on Sunday night and as you can see in the ring we've got Shane McMahon and Team WCW!

--------

Shane McMahon in the ring with Team WCW (Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig & Team Canada: Lance Storm & Mike Awesome)

Shane addresses the fans and says he's sure most of them will be rooting for Team WCW to get revenge over The Extreme Alliance in the War Games match this Sunday.

Shane announces that we will have another prep match for the 5 v 5 and the main event of tonight's show will see Team WCW test themselves against 5 of WCW's other 5 best talents as they take on Rob Van Dam, Kanyon, The Nu Road Warriors (Road Warrior Animal & Road Warrior Dog) & Terry Funk!

Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig and Team Canada all take turns addressing the crowd/The Extreme Alliance

DDP is last and as he's talking the video feed at the top of the stage pans to the parking lot where we see a commotion.

Kanyon is being jumped by The Chair Swingin' Freaks!!! It's Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney with Joey Styles cheering them on.

DDP stops mid flow and is furious! DDP runs out of the ring and through the entrance way like a mad-man trying to save his pal.

Shane urges on the rest of the team to join him. Shane leaves the ring with Booker T and Curt Hennig following him quickly to try and help out DDP and Kanyon.

Lance Storm and Mike Awesome look less up for it but they also leave the ring and head down the entrance ramp to help out...

Terry Funk - Theme - YouTube

Terry Funk comes out with a baseball bat and he runs straight for Storm and Awesome who are caught off guard. He manages to nail Lance Storm with one instantly and then gets a big impact shot on the mid-section of Awesome.

Oh boy it's The Funker! says Tony. Last week in Nitro's main event Terry Funk had a shot against Rob Van Dam for the WCW United States Championship, but before that match Mike Awesome choke-slammed him through a table!

Arn Anderson adds that whilst Funk is booked in the main event of this week to take on Awesome in the 5v5, it looks like Funk doesn't want to wait a moment longer for his revenge.

Scott Hudson notes that WCW needs to be a united front at the moment... we can't have in-fighting amongst ourselves!

Funk goes to nail Awesome with another shot but Awesome manages to block it! Awesome uses his strength and power to get the better of Funk and he nails him with a big right hand.

Awesome then grabs Funk and takes him towards the edge of the entrance ramp. Below is a significant fall to the bottom where there seems to be some kind of tabled platform.

Lance Storm is back on his feet and Mike Awesome asks Storm to guard the entrance way in-case anyone tries to be a hero.

Oh no! Tony says! Awesome could end Terry Funk's career here...

Mike Awesome grabs Funk road the throat and looks like he's ready to hit a chokeslam on Terry Funk...

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

Rob Van Dam comes flying out to try and save his friend Funk, but Storm manages to engage him and RVD can't quite get to Awesome to stop... but wait!!!

Rob Van Dam wasn't alone! He's got... he's got 'The Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels with him and he's got a steel-chair!

Mike Awesome and Lance Storm's attack on Christopher Daniels put him out of action for an entire month and it looks like he hasn't forgotten about that!

Daniels nails Awesome with a chair... Awesome is reeling and RVD finally manages to get the best of Lance Storm by nailing him with a big kick.

Daniels helps up Terry Funk and checks if he's okay, RVD then comes to help Funk too.

Awesome is back to his feet but super groggy standing where he was going to chokeslam Funk off the entrance way... he turns round to see what's happened and

OH MY GOD!!!!

FUNK HITS A SPEAR!

Terry Funk managed to break away from the help he was getting from Rob Van Dam and Christopher Daniels and despite barely being able to walk let alone run he's managed to bundle into Mike Awesome and that momentum took them both of the stage and crashing down below!!

The camera pans below to Funk and Awesome who both look in an absolutely terrible state as some medics rush to check on them.

On the video screen we see DDP, Shane, Booker T, Curt Hennig and several other random members of the roster checking up on Kanyon after The Chair Swingin' Freaks have fled the scene. Kanyon is on his feet, angry and not in a good way.

Mexicools - theme and Titantron Video - YouTube

WCW 3 Count 1st Theme Song - "Can't Get You Outta My Heart" (With Tron) - YouTube

Super Crazy and Psychosis are very keen to get their hands on 3 Count. Before the match 3 Count do a dance/song at the front of the entrance ramp and state that they refuse to start the match until their 3rd member Shane Helms gets out there.

WCW: "Sugar" Shane Helms [Theme Song] - "Vertebreaker" (youtube.com)

Shane Helms comes out with a mic and says he's told them he's done with 3 Count... Moore says once you're in the band you can never truly leave baby! And you need us to beat these MexiCruisers!!

3 Count tell him to watch and learn from the commentary position

Shane Helms goes on commentary for the match

The match starts with Super Crazy and Psychosis finally able to get their hands on 3 Count but Shannon Moore spends several minutes doing his best to evade any real action getting in a lot of counters and tagging in Karagias in and out a few times. Eventually when it looks like Super Crazy will get some offence in Evan Karagias throws Shannon Moore the microphone they were using and Moore nails Super Crazy with it!

The referee blows the whistle

The MexiCruisers win via DQ - (3.43) - (58 rated)

------

WWE Theme - Eric Bischoff "I'm Back" - YouTube

Bischoff comes out and he says he's had about enough of all this drama with 3 Count and The MexiCruisers. Bischoff says he's had enough of the MexiCruisers crap and he doesn't particularly like them but if he books a match he expects it to go ahead. We haven't got time to restart the match tonight... so at The Great American Bash it will be The MexiCruisers vs 3 Count and if 3 Count pull any of this DQ or countout crap... then maybe they will have to become pop-stars for real because he will FIRE them!!!

3 Count look astounded by this development as The MexiCruisers laugh, with Shane Helms on commentary is unsure what to make of it.

JJ Dillon interview with Johnny Ace

JJ Dillon says to Ace that he's sure fans will be keen to know about the condition of Mike Awesome and Terry Funk after their altercation on the entrance ramp earlier in the evening.

Johnny Ace says he's afraid it's not good news. Not only will Terry Funk and Mike Awesome not be medically cleared to compete in the main event of Nitro tonight, but Mike Awesome will not be medically cleared for the War Games match at The Great American Bash!

JJ Dillon says that this is a development that will surely disturb WCW fans going into the match with The Extreme Alliance at The Great American Bash and asks if there is any word from Shane McMahon on a replacement for Mike Awesome?

Johnny Ace says Shane will be making a further announcement later tonight to confirm the replacement...

ECW Mikey Whipwreck Custom Titantron - YouTube

Tony on commentary says well the stipulation here is that if Mikey Whipwreck and whoever his 2 partners for tonight are manages to get the win tonight then he might get to team with Tajiri again but this time within Fit's Fight Club...

Who's he found folks??

The New World Order (NWO) Theme Song - YouTube

Blue Meanie and Nova come out!

It's the bWo!

You know, Tony says, every time I hear that music I think it could be Kevin Nash or Scott Hall... thank god it's just these guys!!

This is a fairly even 6 man tag team match between Fit's Fight Club, Whipwreck and the bWo

Towards the end of the match Dave Taylor is in the ring getting in some offence against Whipwreck when Blue Meanie manages to distract Finlay and Tajiri. Whipwreck against the run of play manages to sneak in a roll-up and get the 1-2-3 over Dave Taylor

Mikey Whipwreck & The bWo win via pinfall - (9.47) - (51 rated)

---------

After the match Finlay is furious at ringside.

Finlay gets a live mic and says Whipwreck got lucky this time. But you don't get to join Fit's Fight Club with lucky roll-up victories...oh no... if Mikey Whipwreck wants to team with Tajiri again... then at The Great American Bash he's going to have to fight him! It will be Mikey Whipwreck vs Tajiri and if Mikey Whipwreck can beat him... then... and only then can Mikey Whipwreck join their club!

Barry Windham and Mike Rotunda arrive in Shane's office where Eric Bischoff and Johnny Ace are

Windham and Rotunda start to go potty about those damn cowards Shawn Stasiak and Mark Jindrak who ditched the 5v5 match last week... Barry Windham demands some sort of punishment for them!

Johnny says do you know what... I agree with you boys... what they did didn't help Team WCW prepare for The Extreme Alliance at the Great American Bash...

Bischoff says it did help them as The Extreme Alliance are a bunch of cowards and are probably just as likely to have members of their own walk out like that anyway...

Johnny Ace shrugs him off and says nevertheless a punishment for them is in order... but I think you're big enough and ugly enough to deliver your own punishment... how about... at The Great American Bash... you two... face those two in a match!

Windham & Rotunda are pleased with this

Akira Hokuto (with 'Sinister' James Mitchell) vs Torrie Wilson (with Billy Kidman)

Akira Hokuto 2nd - 1000 Suns (WCW Official Theme) - YouTube

Torrie Wilson - Need A Little Time (Official Theme) - YouTube

The commentators mention that this is the final qualifier for the Women's Triangle match at The Great American Bash for the vacant WCW Women's World Championship. Stacy Keibler and Malia Hosaka have already booked their spot... which of these ladies will do it? Akira Hokuto, former WCW Women's World champion, she's a 16 year veteran and has been a champion in Japan and Mexico as well, whilst Torrie Wilson is certainly more towards the beginning of her career currently training at the WCW Power Plant, but she has Billy Kidman in her corner, he has a wealth of experience and will be trying to guide through this as she faces Akira Hokuto, backed by the very 'Sinister' indeed James Mitchell

This is a decisive victory for Akira Hokuto as she gets into form going into The Great American bash.

Suddenly a car pulls up, slams the brakes on and out get Tommy Dreamer, Steve Corino and Sabu!

Lance, Curt and DDP pivot to start fighting them but then The Sandman also gets out with a kendo stick and he manages to get a smack in on DDP and Curt Hennig

Hearing the commotion several members of the locker-room including Barry Windham, Mike Rotunda, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles and Jason Jett come pouring out to make up the numbers.

WCW Buff Bagwell 4th Theme Song - "Buff Daddy" (With Tron) - YouTube

Full Blooded ltalians (FBI) 2nd Titantron (with 2nd Theme) - YouTube

This is an interesting match due to the sheer size difference between the two. Guido uses all his speed, strike power and agility to try to get the better of Buff Daddy V but V is such a powerful force that it's hard for Guido to get much out of the match.

At one point Buff interferes and Johnny and Tony try to get involved but the referee ejects all 3 of them from ringside.

Once Johnny and Tony are gone Buff Daddy V gets back on the offence and he puts a submission hold on Little Guido trying to choke him out.

Guido manages to sneak his way to the rope and gets a rope break but he won't let go as he wants to choke Guido out.

The referee eventually has to disqualify Buff Daddy V to stop the match!

Little Guido wins via DQ - (8.28) - (43 rated)

Johnny 'The Bull' and Tony Mamaluke are quickly on the scene post-match to get Buff Daddy V off of Guido.

Chavo Guerrero vs Hugh Morrus

WCW Chavo Guerrero Last Theme - YouTube

As Chavo Guerrero makes his way to the ring he's wearing an Eddie Guerrero t-shirt and says "I love you Eddie! Get well soon Uncle!"

Tony adds on commentary that everyone at WCW is thinking of Eddie Guerrero at this time after the tragic incident this past week that saw him break his neck. Arn agrees and says as a professional in this business you hate to see that happen and we're all hoping first and foremost he can get back to health for his family... then if he can keep performing in this business we hope he can get back to the level he's at because when he's on top of his game there ain't many cats better!

Hugh Morrus WCW Theme "Xtra Large" - YouTube

This match gets a decent amount of time. Chavo seems in the mood tonight looking to get a win and dedicate it to his injured Uncle. But Hugh Morrus is a quick, powerful opponnent who had last week off after being suspended for his actions against Rob Van Dam the week before eliminating him from the Battle Royale after he had already been eliminated himself.

RVD comes out and stands at the entrance way asking Hugh Morrus to come on down and fight him

Rob! Last week you asked me to pick a hand... but I don't think you know who you're dealing with... you see you threw me out of that Battle Royale and cost me the chance to be in the main event of the PPV this Sunday where I had the perfect opportunity to show the world and WCW fans and management that they're overlooking Hugh Morrus as the future of this company!

Fans boo

Well Rob, you've been here 5 minutes and held the WCW United States Championship for even less and you think you're some kind of big shot... well Rob I've held that title not 1... but 2 times... and I think everyone in this arena knows I was a much better champion than you are... you've barely even defended that title... you only won it from Booker T after he got hit by a car... you only defended it against Terry Funk last week after he got put through a table.

Rob Van Dam on the mic now says you can only beat what's in front of you and-

Hugh Morrus says that's a great point and on that subject... look who is in front of you!! You see, Hugh says, it seems like we've got a perfect scenario here... you want to try and beat me up... I want to become a 3-TIME WCW United States Champion... I think it's all set up for you to put that title on the line against me this Sunday at The Great American Bash!

Rob Van Dam says if he has to put the title on the line in order to beat Hugh Morrus' ass... then he's on!!!

Before the match starts Shane McMahon comes out and cuts a promo. Shane says that due to Terry Funk and Mike Awesome both leaving the building in separate ambulances and being unable to compete the main event is now a 4 vs 4 match... but he tells fans he understands their concerns for the 5 v 5 match at The Great American Bash given Mike Awesome now can't compete... especially given lots of other guys on the roster are already booked in other matches for The Great American Bash now... but Shane says he signed those matches off because he already decided on the replacement...

Shane says that The Extreme Alliance made this personal when they attacked his company and him at Big Bang!

Shane says that in that War Games match he won't ask Team WCW to do anything that he wouldn't do... and he's going to prove that to the locker-room as the replacement and the new 5th man in Team WCW is... Shane McMahon!

Oh my! Tony says

Shane says he has been medically cleared to compete at The Great American Bash and he will do just that in the main event! Shane announces he will be on commentary for this match watching and hoping Team WCW have jelled enough to help get the win!

Booker T takes exception to an aggressive push from Lance Storm that seems accidental but then they start squaring off. DDP and Curt Hennig get in the middle of them but then Booker T seems to start having a go at those two guys too as he knows they both want his title.

As Nitro goes off air Tony Schiavone says well if you're The Extreme Alliance this should make good viewing for you... it seems like going into The Great American Bash there is some real tension within the WCW locker-room... can Shane McMahon get these guys on the same page before War Games on Sunday???

Mike Awesome being replaced in Team WCW for Shane "always the plan" if Shane was fit to work at The Great American Bash according to sources close to WCW.

There has been some speculation that Mike Awesome had a legit reason for being worked out of the War Games match at The Extreme Alliance, but the rumour is that Awesome himself was only ever a replacement for Shane to start with. It is thought that before Shane picked up a legitimate injury when he was work smashed off the entrance ramp at Big Bang! by The Sandman to end the show, the plan was always for him to insert himself in the 5v5 War Games match.

When Shane got an injury this plan had to change slightly with Mike Awesome being in the match as a contingency in-case Shane wasn't medically cleared. Shane did get medical clearance and the plan all along if this was the case was for Terry Funk and Mike Awesome's angle to effectively write them both off of the PPV match to continue their ongoing feud.

Speculation is rife as to who the mystery new "big name, big money" signing that Shane McMahon has to announce at WCW's 2nd PPV of the Shane McMahon era.

The Great American Bash is just days away and the show will open with Shane's reveal of the new man. It is unclear if this signing will be someone bought out of a TimeWarner contract or not, but it is thought that the rumours that both WWF and New Japan were interested in the mystery man are true and WCW have genuinely beaten both companies to the signing.

Whilst WCW's shows so far have been rated as being reasonably good (albeit nowhere near on the level of WWF) one thing WCW is short of right now is star-power so whoever it is should get a decent spot in the company, which perhaps could have been their motivation for joining WCW over WWF.

The Great American Bash, 2001

Sunday 24 June 2001

Live on PPV

33,170 crowd in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

---------

Show opens up with Rage Against The Machine's Renegades of Funk

Rage Against the Machine - Renegades of Funk - YouTube

Tony Schiavone opens up on comms saying WELCOME EVERYBODY WE'RE LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA TONIGHT FOR THE 2ND PPV OF THE SHANE MCMAHON ERA OF WCW... AS YOU CAN SEE NOW ON THE HARD CAMERA THE MAIN EVEN TONIGHT IS THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED WAR GAMES MATCH WHICH WILL SEE TEAM WCW TAKE ON THE EXTREME ALLIANCE... A LAST MINUTE INJURY ON NITRO TO MIKE AWESOME MEANS HE WAS REPLACED IN TEAM WCW BY THE OWNER HIMSELF, SHANE MCMAHON... and it's Shane McMahon who is coming out to open the show to announce the signing of a HUGE new addition to the WCW roster...

For the Love of Money - YouTube

You got any idea who it is asks Arn Anderson?

I got no idea Arn says Tony.

Scott Hudson reminds fans that Shane McMahon says he faced hot competition from Japan and his father's company for this man's signature so whoever it was must have been in hot demand...

Shane McMahon in the ring... before he does anything else he looks up to the top of the arena where the War Games cages are held and he looks a bit anxious about the match later in the show

Shane then welcomes fans to The Great American Bash, 2001 and says he hopes fans are excited for the show

Shane says since he took over WCW he's not been shy about his aims to get WCW back to the top of the mountain in wrestling... he wants WCW to be the biggest and the best wrestling company in the world and that is his core mission

This man who I've signed is someone who has helped WCW get to the top of the mountain before... I'm sure not every fan will be over the moon to see him back in WCW... but to those fans I say whether he's hated or adored... he is certainly never ignored... I had to compete with New Japan and the WWF to get this signing over the line and I knew I just couldn't miss out and have the alternative reality where this guy was at the top of his game again in Japan or working for my father and wrestling fans and pundits across the world where saying... oh I can't believe Shane McMahon didn't sign that guy... well I put my money where my mouth is and I did sign him!

Ladies and Gentleman... this man is a former 4 time Intercontinental Champion... 2 time WCW United States Champion... WCW Television champion... 7 time WCW World Tag Team champion... IT'S SCOTT HALL!!!!

The New World Order (NWO) Theme Song - YouTube

image.png.a0cba45062cce099a7052d054a654795.png

Oh my god! Tony says on commentary, as Arn Anderson and Scott Hudson express shock too.

Scott Hall makes his way to the ring to a fairly mixed reaction

Scott Hall gets in the ring and Shane gives him a handshake/hug

Shane McMahon says to Scott we've got a big show on our hands tonight so there will be plenty of time to hear more from you on Nitro when your contract begins... perhaps tonight you'd like to tell the loyal WCW fans why you decided WCW was the best company for you to join?

Scott Hall laughs...

First of all... Yo... The Bad Guy is back... but yeah seriously... why'd I think WCW was the best company to join? Well Shane, despite what your father might have us all believe... I've always believed, certainly since The Outsiders joined the company in '96... (Scott turns to the camera) just as a side note I hope you're enjoying that Turner money Kev...

Arn Anderson starts chuckling at this

But no, no as I was saying... I've always believed since '96 that WCW is where the big boys play... Nitro is the show where anything can happen at anytime... you know New Japan and Vince actually both offered me a contract before Shane did... but when Shane heard I was available he was straight on the phone... and do you know what I said to him when I heard WCW were interested?

You know... I said forget New Japan... forget the WWF... WCW is my home and that's where The Bad guy is going!

Fans cheer this

Scott Hall laughs and then says Nah I'm just kidding... when Shane McMahon called me and said WCW were interested I just laughed at him... I said Shane, I gotta lot of respect for you kid, there was one time where WCW was where the Big Boys play... and I said Shane you've got your father's blood in you... I'm sure you can get WCW back to the top... but at this stage in my career... the twilight of my career... all I'm interested in is making as much money as I can before I have to hang up my boots for good... and I said Shane you might have Vince's blood... but you ain't got his wallet, son. I thought there was no way that Shane or WCW could get anywhere near the WWF's offer... and I weren't even playing any games or hard-ball with them I thought there was no way they'd offer me more as that was the only way I was ever going to come back to WCW...

Fans boo a bit at this

But Shane made me an offer that both New Japan and the WWF either couldn't or wouldn't match... so you want to know why I'm back in WCW? Same reason I was ever here in this company... I'm here for the money! And this is a direct message to all the boys in the back... you might not like me... I might not like me... but at the end of the day it's just business and The Bad Guy is good for business!

Scott Hall drops the mic

Well, Scott Hall, back in WCW folks says Tony, I'm sure this will send shockwaves both around the world and within our own locker-room as fans and wrestlers and everyone else in this business digest the news that Scott Hall is back in WCW

------------

Team WCW in the back watching on a monitor (Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig and Lance Storm)

Booker T says "tell me I didn't just see that! Scott Hall is back?? Oh hell no! He ain't bringing back the NWO is he Curt?"

Curt Hennig says tonight was the first he heard of Hall being back in the company. He says his days of being in the NWO are certainly over... he's happy to work with Team WCW for the greater good for now, but as he said before his eyes are only on the Big Gold Belt. He's done being anyone else's lackey or just some other asshole in some big group of guys

Lance Storm says if he can be serious for a minute there's nothing wrong with being with a big group of guys

Booker T looks at him a bit funny and DDP starts laughing

DDP says he knows Scott Hall is a love/hate kinda guy but what DDP loves more than anything else is WCW and Scott Hall in WCW can only be good for growing WCW back to where it belongs and that's good for all of the boys... the more money he brings in the more money there will be for everyone it's the trickle down economic effect

Lance Storm says he hopes some of Scott Hall's pay trickles down to his

DDP says the important point is for tonight we've got to put aside our differences and get revenge on The Extreme Alliance for what they did at Big Bang!

Booker T agrees and says he can't wait to his hands on them especially Sabu.

Match 1:

3 Count (Evan Karagias & Shannon Moore) vs The MexiCruisers (Super Crazy & Psychosis)

3 Count 1st Theme - Can't Get You Outta My Heart (Full) + Download Link - YouTube

Mexicools - theme and Titantron Video - YouTube

We kick off the show with a high-spots cruiserweight match, a rematch from Nitro where we didn't really get a proper match as 3 Count have spent weeks evading the wrath of Super Crazy and Psychosis, as well as Juventud who 3 Count cost the WCW Cruiserweight Championship at Big Bang! Eric Bischoff has warned 3 Count if there is any funny business in terms of them getting DQ'd or counted out etc he will fire them!

This is an action-packed and energetic match to start the show. 3 Count bring the fight to The MexiCruisers but as the match goes in it becomes apparent that they just can't live with them and Super Crazy gets the win in the end pinning Evan Karagias.

After the match Super Crazy and Psychosis throw Evan Karagias and Shannon Moore out of the ring indicating that they are done with them. 3 Count leave the ring looking pretty disappointed.

The MexiCruisers win via pinfall - (8.21) - (59 rated)

JJ Dillon interview with Rob Van Dam (and Bill Alfonso)

JJ Dillon asks RVD if he's confident going into his big match for the WCW United States Championship with Hugh Morrus later in the show.

RVD says he's looking forward to getting his hands on Hugh Morrus and giving him the ass kicking he deserves.

RVD adds if any of The Extreme Alliance want to try and play any funny business with him then he's got plenty of ass kicking's in the tank ready for any of those jack-offs too!

Match 2:

Mikey Whipwreck vs Tajiri (with Fit Finlay) - If Mikey Whipwreck wins, then he will get to join Fit's Fight Club and team with Tajiri again

ECW Mikey Whipwreck Custom Titantron - YouTube

Tajiri's 2001 v1 Titantron Entrance Video feat. "Imperial City" Theme [HD] - YouTube

Mikey Whipwreck seems to just about have more fans in Philadelphia for this one with perhaps a lot of ex ECW fans in the crowd to cheer him on.

These two ECW alumni get a decent amount of time and have a reasonably good match. At one point it looks like Mikey Whipwreck will get the win as he counters a kick from Tajiri into a school-boy pin, but Tajiri kicks out at 2.9!

Tajiri then has Finlay fire him up at ringside and he wakes up a bit, becomes more ruthless with his kick, a Tarantula submission and then finally gets the Buzzsaw kick for the win.

Mikey Whipwreck will not join Fit's Fight Club and get to team with Tajiri again!

Tajiri wins via pinfall - (9.44) - (40 rated)

Roddy Piper outside the arena with The Extreme Alliance (The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, Steve Corino & The Chair Swingin' Freaks with Don Callis and Joey Styles)

Roddy asks if The Extreme Alliance ready for War tonight in Philadelphia

Sandman says it's a disgrace they're not even allowed to share the locker-room tonight.

Sabu says if you treat people like animals then they become animals... well that's all the motivation we needed tonight!

Dreamer says in Philadelphia, the home of Extreme Wrestling, they will show Team WCW what it means to go to War!

Steve Corino says Curt Hennig is talked about as one of the best technical wrestlers of the last 10-15 years and Lance Storm is talked about as one of the best technical wrestlers of this generation... well tonight boys I will run rings around the pair of you and show the world that Steve Corino is better than both of you!

Axl tells Kanyon he's here to show the world just how dangerous he can be... and WHO BETTER THAN KANYON to prove that point?!?

Balls Mahoney says the big network TV companies don't want to put people like him on TV because they're loose cannons, dangerous and not pretty... well Shane McMahon... you ain't gonna be too pretty after I swing my chair at your rich pretty boy head tonight!

Don Callis says tonight The Extreme Alliance take what's rightfully theirs... Shane McMahon wouldn't put WCW contracts on the line tonight because he knew his side would lose... but that's okay... because tonight we make ourselves UNDENIABLE and increase the terms and conditions on whatever contract we eventually get whether thats from WCW OR the WWF!!!!

Joey Styles says tonight for The War Games main event... Tony Schiavone... Scott Hudson... Arn Anderson...you better watch your asses on that commentary desk because I managed to negotiate my way into commentating with you during the match!

WHAT??! says Tony

Arn Anderson and Scott Hudson equally fuming at this development on commentary

Match 3:

Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda vs Shawn Stasiak (with Stacy Keibler) & Mark Jindrak

Barry Windham 9th WCW Theme 'Road To Glory (Underscore)' - YouTube

WCW Shawn Stasiak 4th Theme Song - "Stasiak Theme" (With Tron) - YouTube

This tag team match sees the ongoing tension between the two tag teams that was ignited during a Battle Royale and intensified when friendly fire caused Shawn Stasiak & Mark Jindrak to walk out of a 5v5 tag match where they were alongside Windham & Rotunda. Windham & Rotunda called them cowards which Stasiak and Jindrak have taken exception to.

This is an open match with both teams getting in a decent amount of offence. The match ends when a distraction from Stacy at ringside helps Shawn Stasiak gain an advantage, he hits his finishing move on Rotunda and after Jindrak clears Windham off the apron Stasiak gets the win.

Shawn Stasiak & Mark Jindrak win via pinfall - (10.14) - (51 rated)

Stasiak and Jindrak celebrate wildly after the match with a win over the experienced team, with Windham and Rotunda looking disappointed at the result

------------

Shane McMahon at the gorilla position can be seen in his producer role/position ordering a few people about.

Kanyon is there ready to go and Shane McMahon says to Kanyon that this is Kanyon's chance to prove his worth to WCW and help us start the night off by getting one over on The Extreme Alliance!

Kanyon is in the zone but he looks serious and says he won't the let the side down.

DDP is also there and wishes his friend Kanyon the best of luck before he goes out

Match 4:

Axl Rotten (with Balls Mahoney) vs Kanyon (with DDP)

WCW Chris Kanyon 2nd Theme - YouTube

Kanyon comes out and seems to have a decent amount of the crowd onside.

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

Well how is this going to work exactly if they're not allowed in the locker-room? asks Tony Schiavone, they're not on the roster, none of them even have entrance music, it looks like they're coming out to the old ECW theme song?

Some ECW chants can be heard as Kanyon searches around to see what's happening

I think he's coming in through the crowd! says Arn Anderson

Axl Rotten, with a chair, comes into the arena alongside his tag team partner Balls Mahoney, also carrying a chair, eventually they get to the ringside and climb over.

The Chair Swingin' Freaks, both with chairs in hand take in the crowd, who seem quite split between ECW and WCW, make their way to the ring with Kanyon looking on perhaps not as enthused to take on two guys both with chairs

DDP is seen rushing down to ringside indicating that if Balls Mahoney is going to be out at ringside then so will he to help protect Kanyon

The Freaks try to get in the ring with the chairs but the ref says they can't do that it's a 1v1 match and it's a normal match you can't have chairs. They look like they might hit the ref with the chairs but they think better of it. Balls stays at ringside with his chair and Axl dumps his chair at the side of the ring and sits on it agitated as DDP watches from the opposite side of the ring.

The match finally begins with Kanyon and Axl Rotten both coming in hot. It's less of a wrestling match and more of a brawl. After around 4-5 minutes of high intensity action Axl seems to tire a little, Kanyon is still raring to go but DDP at ringside seems to advise him to control the match now he's on top.

Kanyon starts to do this and eventually hits his finishing move the Flatliner on Axl... he has Axl down and goes for the pin... but Balls Mahoney gets off his chair and tries to get in the ring with his chair again to stop the count. Meanwhile the crowd has counted 1...2....3... but isn't counted as he's distracted dealing with Axl Rotten. DDP going mental at ringside as well. As the ref's back is turned after 10-15 seconds Axl manages to get up a bit hits a huge low blow onto Kanyon who has his back turned and then Axl hits an inverted brainbuster on Kanyon having used this distraction to his advantage.

The ref turns back round and DDP gets in the ring to prevent the ref from counting. The ref is arguing with DDP when Balls Mahoney manages to get in the ring and nails the ref with a chair, before nailing DDP with one too.

My god! Tony says at ringside! These people are animals!

Balls and Axl make a quick getaway through the crowd as after the ref and DDP are taken out the locker-room opens with Shane McMahon, Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat, Finlay, Dave Taylor, then Curt Hennig, Lance Storm, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, as well as several other referees and a still taped up wristed Stevie Ray also come piling out.

Axl Rotten and Balls Mahoney are long gone by this point.

The referee is in a bad way and not really in a position to do anything.

After being told something by Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat the timekeeper states that as a result of a disqualification this match has been awarded to Kanyon.

Kanyon wins via DQ - (8.05) - (62 rated)

------------

JJ Dillon on camera in interview position states that at this time ladies and gentleman 'The Mouth of the South' and WCW's own Head of Music production, Jimmy Hart, has requested some time.

Jimmy Hart says he's back in WCW... the best manager to ever do it is back for one last run with a man who has never got what he deserved but who is prepared to take what he deserves... and it's only fitting that Jimmy's here to announce this back on WCW PPV during The Great American Bash given we have a big War Games match later tonight...

Do you know what comes after War? Jimmy asks

JJ begins to answer but Jimmy Hart say's it was a rhetorical question JJ!

Do you know what comes after war? Jimmy says again

Death! And lots of it!

Now I don't know if tonight will see the death of The Extreme Alliance or maybe the death of Shane McMahon's authority in this new era of WCW... but I'll tell you what I do know JJ!!

Death is coming to WCW after tonight!

This Wednesday on Nitro... I'm bringing Death to every man on the WCW locker-room who seeks to get in the way of my client's rise to the top of the mountain...

This Wednesday night... it is time for DR DEATH!!!!

A very intense and focused looking 'Dr Death' Steve Williams is now seen on screen with Jimmy Hart

My god! Steve Williams is back in WCW! says Arn Anderson, his ex-tag team partner on commentary

Match 5:

Buff Enuff (Buff Bagwell & Buff Daddy V) vs The F.B.I (Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke) (with Johnny 'The Bull)

WCW Buff Bagwell 4th Theme Song - "Buff Daddy" (With Tron) - YouTube

Full Blooded ltalians (FBI) 2nd Titantron (with 2nd Theme) - YouTube

This match starts off with The FBI struggling to get much offence in on Buff Daddy V who is so huge it's difficult for Little Guido or Tony Mamaluke to do much damage. V eventually tires out a bit an tags in Bagwell who is taunting The FBI and Johnny 'The Bull' at ringside.

Buff tries to cheat and Johnny 'The Bull' gets involved and squares up to Buff Daddy V before the referee ejects Johnny who can't believe it. Buff Daddy V then manages to clear out Little Guido and Buff Bagwell gets the win over Tony Mamaluke in the middle of the ring.

After the match Johnny 'The Bull' comes raging down and squares up to them. It seems this feud might not be completely over...

Buff Enuff win via pinfall (9.45) - (57 rated)

DDP backstage in the medical section with Kanyon and JJ Dillon

JJ Dillon asks DDP if he will be medically cleared to compete tonight after the chair-shot he took in the match earlier in the night. DDP says he's a bit sore but that's never stopped him before.

Scott Hall comes into set.

Kanyon looks a bit on edge at him having turned up.

DDP says well I'll be damned, you son of a gun, Scott Hall you're back!

Scott Hall says he's not got a lot of time for many people in this business but he's always got time for DDP. Hall says he hopes DDP ain't too beat up as it sounds like Team WCW are counting on him tonight.

Kanyon says if DDP can't go tonight then he will step in for him because he's a good guy and a team player unlike some people...

Scott Hall laughs at this and says good guys finish lasts... he says his contract doesn't officially start until Wednesday night but even if it did he wouldn't fight in a War Games match against those loons unless he was getting a fat bonus... word of advice Kid he says to Kanyon... work smarter not harder.

Hall fist bumps an awkward looking DDP and walks off.

I hate that guy, Kanyon says.

He's not so bad says DDP but he is an acquired taste.

Match 6:

Shane Helms (c) vs Billy Kidman (with Torrie Wilson) vs Juventud Guerrera - Triangle match for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

WCW Billy Kidman 4th Theme (1998-2000) - YouTube

WCW Juventud Guerrera 2nd Theme Song - "Summer Nights In Spain" (With 2nd Tron) - YouTube

WCW: "Sugar" Shane Helms [Theme Song] - "Vertebreaker" - YouTube

This match is a bit more of a technical story-telling match compared to the usual show opening high-flying spot fest that we see with the Cruiserweights. All 3 of these guys can go and tell a story in the ring and as the match progresses we see just that in this match. Kidman and Helms sort of have an uneasy alliance from teaming with each other a bit in the last few weeks but it's every man for himself and with Torrie Wilson encouraging him at ringside Kidman soon gets on Helms' back too as he wants this title victory desperately.

All 3 men put it all on the line to try and get the win. Juventud gets taken out of the match for a minute or so after taking a big bump to the outside, then Billy Kidman makes a mistake and Helms capitalises on it to hit a Vertebraker...1...2... but Kidman's foot is on the rope! The referee points this out to Helms who is annoyed at himself for not putting Kidman closer to the middle of the ring.

Helms goes up to the top rope to hit some kind of move on Kidman, but Kidman gets up onto the top rope with him. Kidman counters and hits a superplex from the top rope onto Helms who ends up rolling out of the ring to recover, but then Juventud slides into the ring, pounces on a slightly hurt Kidman from hitting that move himself and Juvi hits him with a Juvi-Driver!

Shane McMahon's office we see Johnny Ace and Eric Bischoff

Eric says it's your brother's tag team match up next. I don't know why Shane allowed him to team with this Degenerate BG James. They're not a team. They'll be no match for Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo, they're getting their titles back!

Johnny Ace says never write off The Road Warriors, BG James will add a new lease of life to them and Animal will fight to keep those titles.

Shane McMahon comes in and says is Eric ready for the grand unveiling of the WCW World Women's Championship

Eric says he wants nothing to do with it. Eric says he doesn't like women's wrestling, won't be watching the match and won't have anything to do with the title or the booking of the matches... if Shane wants to go down this politically correct equal rights crap... maybe he should have a specialist Women's General Manager.

Shane says Eric is making a mistake by not embracing this new era of WCW... Eric disagrees... Shane asks Johnny if he will come out to present the title again, Johnny is more than happy to as Head of Talent Relations for both Male and Female talent... Eric laughs at him and makes a joke about him being a suck-up

Match 7:

The Nu Road Warriors (Road Warrior Animal & Road Warrior Dog) (c) vs Sean O'Haire & Chuck Palumbo

Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire 2001 - "Freestyle Hombre" WWE WCW Entrance Theme - YouTube

Road Warriors Theme Song - YouTube

The Nu Road Warriors come out with Animal on a motor-bike and BG James on a moped

This match starts off hot with Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo keen to get their titles back. They isolate BG James at the start of the match using their power and athletic prowess to get the better of him and tire him down.

BG James eventually gets the hot tag in and Animal uses the power of his own to get them back in the match taking out O'Haire and Palumbo.

Eventually Sean O'Haire manages to get the better of Animal and he hits him with a Widow Maker and looks to have the match won, but Road Warrior Dog manages to wiggle away from Chuck Palumbo's grip who tries to stop him interuptting the pin but BG James just gets there to break it up. O'Haire is really frustrated by this.

O'Haire argues with the referee and then Palumbo a bit, in this distraction BG James manages to clear out Palumbo off the apron, then Animal gets the better of O'Haire, lifts him up for a Doomsday Device and Road Warrior Dog nails him from the top.

The Nu Road Warriors get the 1...2...3!!

The Nu Road Warriors (Road Warrior Animal & Road Warrior Dog) retain the WCW World Tag Team Championships via pinfall - (9.54) - (60 rated)

The Nu Road Warriors seem a bit surprised at their win but they celebrate together happily whilst O'Haire and Palumbo look frustrated to have lost in back to back title PPV matches.

Akira Hokuto (with 'Sinister' James Mitchell) vs Malia Hosaka (with Terry Taylor) vs Stacy Keibler (with Shawn Stasiak) for the vacant WCW World Women's Championship

Akira Hokuto 4th - Pacific Zone (WCW Official Theme) - YouTube

Malia Hosaka SHIMMER Theme 'Head Like A Hole' - YouTube

Stacy Keibler WWE Theme - Legs - YouTube

This is a slower paced match to cool the crowd a little as they get later into the show before the final 2 matches of the card. Akira Hokuto leads the match as the experienced pro helping especially the very inexperienced Stacy Keibler through the match.

Malia Hosaka is an exciting part of the match and the fan favourite as she came out with a U.S and Hawaiian flag. The crowd are still with Stacy to some extent as the heel as she's in a USA flag ring attire to mark The Great American Bash.

Akira gets booed a lot by the crowd with 'Sinister' James Mitchell being an arse-hole at ringside and also waving a Japanese flag at ringside.

Stacy eventually gets taken out of the match by a swift kick from Malia Hosaka and then Akira Hokuto takes advantage to hit a Northern Lights bomb finisher on Malia Hosaka to get the win

Akira Hokuto wins via pinfall to become WCW World Women's Champion for a 2nd time - (7.51) - (35 rated)

Roddy Piper in the parking lot with Shane McMahon, who is flanked by Finlay, Dave Taylor and Tajiri alongside The Sandman with the Extreme Alliance in the background and Don Callis alongside him

Roddy says it's time to determine which team will have the man advantage to start with in War Games

Roddy Piper says it will be a coin toss.

The Sandman starts smoking and blows his smoke in Shane's direction taunting him and says heads.

Don Callis says wait wait... how do we know this isn't some kind of trick coin... I think you should use one of my coins...

Roddy say fine but I'll check your coin first, Don Callis kicks off and says what do you think I'm some kind of cheat?!?!

Roddy checks the coin and says it's not a trick coin so is fine and he takes it. Roddy flips it and says heads it's The Extreme Alliance first... tails its Team WCW...

Roddy catches the coin and reveals it.... Heads!

Shane looks annoyed and The Sandman starts laughing, with Don Callis clapping and The Extreme Alliance all making a ruckus and loud noise in the background as Shane retreats with Fit Finlay and Dave Taylor.

Match 8:

Rob Van Dam (c) (with Bill Alfonso) vs Hugh Morrus for the WCW United States Championship

Hugh Morrus WCW Theme "Xtra Large" - YouTube

WWE Rob Van Dam 1st Theme "Van Daminator" (HQ) - YouTube

Before the match a video package is shown highlighting how the feud began, with RVD eliminating Hugh Morrus from the Battle Royale to determine the last member of Team WCW in the War Games match, which then saw Hugh run back in the ring and dump RVD out.

This match gets quite a lot of time and aims to show case Hugh Morrus as a powerful, energetic threat to RVD as he starts the match really getting in a lot of offence and making it seem like he could potentially win. RVD gets back in the match though and his performance in the match is really excellent with exciting moves, athletic counters and he just gradually dominates Hugh Morrus to the point Morrus can't live with his superior in ring ability.

RVD eventually gets the Five Star Frog Splash to get the win and retain his title

Rob Van Dam retains the WCW United States Championship via pinfall - (14.51) - (77 rated)

RVD ends the match celebrating with the crowd doing his ROB...VAN...DAM pose as Bill Alfonso congrats RVD and blows his whistle

Video Package showing how this War Games match has come about as a result of The Extreme Alliance's "invasion" over the last month or so since Shane took over WCW.

The commentators explain the War Games rules that 1 competitor from each team starts the match and then after 5 minutes someone else enters. Every other entrant is after 2 minutes. As they won the coin toss earlier on The Extreme Alliance will have the man advantage which should unfortunately give them an advantage tonight.

Main Event / Match 9:

War Games Match: Team WCW (Booker T, DDP, Curt Hennig, Lance Storm & Shane McMahon) vs The Extreme Alliance (The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, Steve Corino & Balls Mahoney) (with Don Callis)

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

ECW theme as The Sandman makes his entrance with a beer and kendo stick, Joey Styles and Don Callis come out with him, Don Callis stands outside the cage watching on as Joey Styles joins commentary

GOOD EVENING BOYS!! Joey says on commentary and Tony, Arn and Scott are deeply unhappy and uncomfortable at this arrangement.

Joey explains The Extreme Alliance are starting off hot with The Sandman... who have you guys got? Booker T? DDP? Come on let's see...

For the Love of Money - YouTube

It's Shane McMahon says Tony!

Shane looking to lead by example tonight says Arn.

Joey Styles starts laughing and says the best thing Terry Funk ever did for The Extreme Alliance was taking out Mike Awesome. This has already become a farce... it's the McMahon show! Why's Shane even in the match?? Going up first too?? That's just stupid.

Shane enters the War Games structure and it's locked with just him, The Sandman and the referee as the match begins.

Shane starts off hot trying to get some payback on The Sandman who injured him at Big Bang! by causing him to fall off the entrance way... Shane gets some offence in but The Sandman eventually gets into it and slams him down. The Sandman then gets his kendo stick and goes to town on Shane making him suffer with each individual hit. Shane sells it wildly and looks in real pain especially given he may not be 100 percent.

Joey Styles on commentary says this was really naive from Shane McMahon. His McMahon macho genes and desperation to show what a tough guy he is has backfired... he's not 100 percent fit and he's gone in there with The Sandman... what an idiot... any of the other members of Team WCW wouldn't have been taken apart like this...

The Sandman has fun with Shane... letting him get up but then hitting him with a few more kendo stick shots before then slamming him down to the mat and laughing.

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

Balls Mahoney comes out... the match is now The Sandman & Balls Mahoney vs Shane McMahon

Balls Mahoney enters the fray, Axl Rotten comes with him and Axl stays at ringside with Don Callis, they both have chairs

ITS THE CHAIR SWINGING FREAK!!! says Joey on commentary

Balls enters the match with a chair. Sandman gets Shane to his feet so Balls can nail him with it and he does. Shane looks done.

Balls and Sandman laughing

Sandman tells Balls he's going to get something special. Sandman gets out a barbed wire baseball bat from under the ring.

Sandman rubs the barbed wire into Shane's face who is in a lot of pain. Shane turns over holding his face in pain and when he rolls over a few seconds later we can see he's been busted wide open. Sandman instructs Balls to lift Shane up and The Sandman looks like he is going to take a run up and smash Shane with the barbed wire baseball bat

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

WCW DDP Theme Song Self High Five - YouTube

It's D-D-PEEEEE!!! says Tony.

DDP comes out... the match is now The Sandman & Balls Mahoney vs Shane McMahon & DDP

DDP comes running out with a chair and gets into the match. DDP smashes Balls Mahoney with a chair and then starts brawling with Sandman, Sandman with the Bat and DDP with the chair. They come to a stand-still and both throw the weapons down and start brawling with each other.

DDP eventually manages to hit a Diamond Cutter. He checks on Shane who is bleeding and clearly in no state to help him. DDP then spends a minute brawling with Balls Mahoney who is back on his feet and punch-drunk.

DDP is struggling to get the better of Mahoney with Sandman also getting back to his feet too

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

Sabu comes out with a table... the match is now The Sandman, Balls Mahoney & Sabu vs Shane McMahon and DDP

DDP manages to strike Balls down and hit a Diamond Cutter on The Sandman as Sabu enters the fray. Sabu leaves the table to one side and starts fighting DDP.

DDP is still in hot form but Sabu has the extra energy having just entered the match and once Balls Mahoney gets back up they have the numbers game. Balls and Sabu work on DDP before Balls takes DDP out with a chair shot.

They look down to Shane McMahon who is still down... Sabu sets up the table and instructs Balls to put Shane on it... Balls puts Shane on the table who is still really out of it and his face covered in blood...

Sabu gets to the top rope... Sandman gets to his feet too and him and Balls shout for Sabu to get him...

Sabu hits an Arabian Moonsault off the top rope and through Shane and the table with the crowd looking on in awe

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

WCW Booker T Theme - YouTube

Booker T, the WCW World Heavyweight Champion is next up and comes running down into the match... Don Callis tries to get in his way but Booker just punches him down on his way to the rings...

The match is now The Sandman, Balls Mahoney & Sabu vs Shane McMahon, DDP & Booker T

Booker T comes in hot and takes down Balls Mahoney, then The Sandman, then him and Sabu face off in the middle of the ring... Booker T wants some revenge on Sabu for Sabu putting him through the table at Big Bang!

They brawl for a good minute or with the other guys in the match still out of action before Booker T gets the better of Sabu and hits a Book-End!

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

It's Steve Corino! The old school wrestling machine!

The match is now The Sandman, Balls Mahoney, Sabu & Steve Corino vs Shane McMahon, DDP & Booker T

Steve Corino enters the mix and starts wrestling with Booker T with Don Callis cheering him on, eventually Steve Corino hits a super-kick on Booker T which takes him out.

DDP gets back to his feet and starts getting in some offence on Corino, but the numbers game soon catches up with DDP and not long before Sandman and Balls are back in the match. DDP manages to hit a Diamond Cutter on Balls Mahoney but he's still got Sandman and Corino to contend with and with Shane McMahon still out for the count he's out-gunned

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

Lance Storm WCW Titantron - "Team Canada" - YouTube

Lance Storm enters the match at just the right time for DDP and Team WCW... Sandman and DDP start brawling seperately and that leads to Steve Corino and Lance Storm facing off in the middle of the ring. The two technicians of their respective team lock-up and the rest of the two minutes is primarily a wrestling match between Storm and Corino which the fans are into. Even DDP and Sandman seem to just be watching at various points.

It looks like Storm is getting the better of Corino when Booker T  comes back in and hits a spear on Corino taking him down. Lance Storm looks a little annoyed that Booker T has finished him off for him.

**THE BUZZER GOES OFF**

ECW Classic/Original Theme Song - YouTube

It's just Tommy Dreamer left for The Extreme Alliance and out he comes!

Tommy Dreamer comes out with a barbed wire baseball bat of his own and re-introduces an extreme element of mayhem to proceedings. He nails Lance Storm with the baseball bat before Booker T tackles him and Booker T starts pushing the barbed wire of the bat onto Tommy Dreamer's face instead which cuts him and he starts bleeding.

Balls, Sandman, Sabu and Corino manage to get back up and congregate on one corner with Tommy Dreamer, whilst Booker T and DDP stand to face off against them. Storm is still down from the barbed wire baseball bat attack, but wait a minute!! A bloodied Shane McMahon pulls himself to his feet... he looks terrible but he's still ready to fight!

The 5 of the Extreme Alliance look set to have a brawl with the 3 of Team WCW... Booker T and DDP start piling into The Extreme Alliance... Shane McMahon starts fighting but immediately gets taken down by Sandman without much effort. Booker T and DDP are fighting their hardest... Lance Storm struggles to his feet and tries get involved but Tommy Dreamer hits a DDT on him taking him out once again.

DDP and Booker T are taking heavy fire and really struggling against the superior numbers game... they need some help

**THE BUZZER GOES**

Curt Hennig 2nd WCW Theme Alternate Version - YouTube

It's Curt Hennig!

The final man entering the match which essentially now starts for real with pinfall and submissions now able to end the match.

Curt Hennig comes flying into the match determined to prove his worth and defend WCW. Curt Hennig starts clotheslining the Extreme Alliance then hitting suplexes to anyone Extreme Alliance who is moving.

Hennig is on fire and with help of DDP and Booker T they take out all 5 men from The Extreme Alliance. Lance Storm has a trash can he's just retrieved and Shane instructs him to put Balls Mahoney prone by the bottom turnbuckle... DDP, Curt and Booker are trying to talk Shane McMahon out of what he wants to do... but Shane goes to the top rope on the other side of the ring to Balls with the trash can and he looks like he's setting up for a Coast To Coast!

Oh my god says Tony. Shane don't do this.

Shane goes for a Coast to Coast but his injuries cause him to miss completely and he doesn't even touch Balls Mahoney.

The fans look in shock unsure if this is a botch or a work when Sandman catches the members of Team WCW off guard a bit as they check on their boss.

The Extreme Alliance get back into the match with their use of weapons with Dreamer going to town on Curt Hennig with his barbed wire baseball bat, Balls Mahoney now using the trash can as a weapon, Sandman caning anyone who moves and Corino hitting German Suplexes on Lance Storm.

Eventually the Extreme Alliance manage to isolate DDP, Curt Hennig, Booker T and Lance Storm and Sandman grabs Shane McMahon who's not in a good way.

Sandman grabs the barbed wire baseball bat from Tommy Dreamer and grips it to Shane McMahon's throat and begins to lock in a submission choke like lock on Shane... the referee is asking if Shane will tap out and after about 10 seconds of screaming in pain Shane McMahon is forced to tap out!

The Extreme Alliance have beaten Team WCW!!

The Extreme Alliance win the War Games match against Team WCW via submission - (29.42) - (76 rated)

The PPV ends with Joey Styles celebrating manically on commentary, Don Callis and Axl Rotten join the ring to celebrate with the various members of Team WCW looking on fairly crestfallen by what has happened.

The fans seem a bit shocked that WCW have lost, a fair amount of boos with some ECW chants going on too as the PPV ends on a bloodied and battered Shane McMahon in the middle of the ring.

The Great American Bomb?!

An inquest is underway at WCW headquarters as The Great American Bash, live from Philadelphia featuring the headline War Games match between Team WCW and The Extreme Alliance has seen a massive drop-off in PPV orders compared to the first PPV of the Shane McMahon era Big Bang!

Big Bang! secured PPV buys of just over 2 Million, yet The Great American Bash only managed 549,000. This drop off of just under 1.5 million buys is thought to have cost WCW around $2,000,000 in PPV revenue in comparison to last month which has been seen as a disaster internally and has left many in the business questioning if Shane McMahon really can take WCW back to the top again.

Speculation is rife as to what has caused such a significant drop off in PPV buys, with some speculating fans gave WCW a chance with Big Bang! and many weren't impressed, with some in the business also suggesting that the Extreme Alliance/ECW 'Invasion' storyline has not landed with casual fans who aren't as interested or aware of ECW. Others have thought that whilst the War Games match was an enjoyable one, without a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match in the main event or on the card this meant a lot of people who might have bought it decided to give it a miss.

It is not thought that the Extreme Alliance angle will be dropped any time soon but The Great American Bash may be the last multi-man match relating to it that we see in a PPV main event for some time.

Scott Hall back in WCW!

Viewers of The Great American Bash were left shocked as Scott Hall rocked back up in WCW as the big new signing that Shane McMahon has been advertising for the last few weeks on Nitro.

It is thought that Scott Hall was legitimately wanted by both NJPW and the WWF so this could be said to be a decent get for WCW given their current position relative to WWF's. It is thought despite Scott Hall's well publicised personal problems Vince McMahon was willing to give him another chance as Razor Ramon, but Shane McMahon offered him a better spot and better pay as Scott Hall now becomes WCW's highest paid performer on a 2 year deal. This is obviously a risk for Shane and WCW given Scott Hall's potential to be a liability, but if it works then Hall would add much needed star-power to a depleted roster.

Scott Hall is said to have had a decent working relationship with Shane, but it is thought that Shane himself wasn't particularly a big influence in the move itself. Hall was said to be motivated primarily by the money, but also preferred WCW's schedule which currently has talent working Wednesday night Nitro, alongside 1 house show per week and 1 PPV per month, this is in stark contrast to WWF who have more TV shows and a busier house show schedule. So even if Hall was offered the same money by WWF he would still be better off in WCW as he would be travelling and on the road less which would also mean having to work less for the money too.

It is not clear what the overall reaction has been like backstage in WCW to the signing, but it is thought that DDP was happy with the signing due to his friendship with Hall.
