Booker T: The Rise to Royalty

Booker T: The Rise to Royalty All Hail King Booker! All Hail King Booker! That had a certain ring to it. A man is standing inside the middle of a wrestling ring, wrapped in a cape, sporting a crown on top of his head, with a septor in one hand, and World Championship in the other. Thousands of fans are on their feet cheering, showering this great King with a huge applause, letting him know how much they appreciate his work. Just as the man is about to turn, and his face be revealed, a scream jerks the scene out of focus. "Booker! Get your butt out of bed before you are late for school again!" It is the first of March 1983, and a seventeen year old young man, from Houston, Texas, by the name of Booker Huffman, is awaken from a wonderful dream by his mother, warning him that he can't afford to miss school again, or he will be in big trouble. Booker gets himself together and heads out the door on the way to school, and spends another beautiful Spring day in Texas, sitting in a classroom, thinking about the wonderful dream that he had the night before. As school lets out, and Booker starts walking home, he lets the winds take him where they may, and the next thing he knows, he is standing in the front of a local gym about a mile away from his house. This place is no foreign land to him, as he knows that this is where his older brother Lane began training to be a wrestler less than a year ago. Booker wanders inside the building to find his older brother, who recently began wrestling in the Houston wrestling scene as Stevie Ray, is standing in the ring, working on his in ring skills, hoping to make the jump to a nationally recognized promotion in the near future. Booker goes up to his brother and the two start wrestling around in the ring for fun, when Booker notices that he has a natural knack for the ring. After the workout, the two brothers begin talking about how their days were, when Booker tells Lane that he had a horrible day in school, and could think of a million things better he could be doing with his time. Lane then reveals that he believes that his brother is a natural in the ring, and could eventually make it in the business. Booker then reveals to his brother the dream that he had last night, and tells him he believes that he saw himself standing in the ring as World Champion, and tells Lane that he has made the decision to drop out of high school to try to break into the wrestling business full time, and realize his dream. Booker headed back home, confident in his decision to become a full time wrestler, and sat down to a great meal. After dinner his mother informed him that it was homework time, then Booker knew he had to break the news to her. He told her of his dream, and his choice to become a full time grappler, and his mother had a look of shock. She informed her son that she will have no son of her's living under her roof drop out of high school to chase dreams of all things, wrestling. It was then that Booker knew that he had to make a life-altering choice, to get an education, and get a boring job somewhere, or go out into the real world, and make a name for himself inside the ring. Booker decided to chase his dream, and pave his own path, The Rise to Royalty.

Shortly after Booker's choice to become a professional wrestler, his mother informed him that if he wanted to pursue this dream, she hoped that he got whatever it was that he was looking for, but he couldn't just take up room at the house, and for the first time in his life he was sent out to live on his own. Booker took what savings he had since he was a kid, which was about $5000, and set out into the streets of Houston, looking for a place to set up camp for his new career choice. He found somewhere to stay for very cheap, he moved in with his brother Lane, and the two set out to set the wrestling world ablaze from there. Over the next two months Lane tought Booker everything that he knew in the ring, and Booker developed some decent brawling skills inside the ring, but his technical and aerial skills left a ton to be desired. One thing that Booker did have going for him was a natural charisma, and the right look for the wrestling business. He was also very athletic, but his basic wrestling knowledge was pretty low. The date was now May 1983, and Booker was suffiently ready to head out into the big business of wrestling, and went to bed early Sunday night, ready to get up early Monday morning, and search for his first job in the wrestling industry.

Booker's job search started close to home, and got off much quicker than he anticipated that it would. Bright and early Monday morning, he called Paul Boesch of Houston Championship Wrestling, and asked him if he needed any workers for upcoming dates. Mr. Boesch told Booker that he would call him back tomorrow after consulting with some HCW officials. Early Tuesday morning, Booker recieved a phone call back from Mr. Boesch, telling him that indeed, they did need some workers, and offered Booker an eight month, verbal contract with HCW, and that all he needed to do was come down to HCW headquarters and sign on the dotted line. Booker told this to his brother Lane, who was estatic for Booker, even though Lane had not recieved any job offers yet. Booker promised to put in a good word to Mr. Boesch about Lane, and then Booker was off to sign his first ever contract. Booker walked into the Houston Championship Wrestling offices, and signed the contract, feeling very good that he was now officially a professional wrestler. He was informed that he would be wrestling in the promotion as Booker Huffman, and his alignment would be babyface. He was then given a page of information on HCW that read like this:
Houston Championship Wrestling Promotion Type: Family Friendly Size: Small Location: Mid South Schedule Houston Wrestling (Every Sunday) HCW: Sam Houston Colliseum (Monthly Event) Staff Owner: Paul Boesch Head Booker: Paul Boesch Roster Art Crews Booker Huffman Boris Zhukov Brady Boone Buddy Landell Butch Reed Friday George Weingeroff Gino Hernandez Harold Harris Hector Guerrero Junkyard Dog Kamala Kendo Nagasaki King Kong Bundy Mil Mascaras Paul Boesch Peter Birkolz Shawn Michaels Skandor Akbar Steve Williams The Masked Superstar The Snowman The Super Destroyer Tiger Conway Jr. Champions Houston Heavyweight: Vacant Houston Tag Team: Masked Superstar and Super Destroyer Houston Television: Vacant

The end of the week came around, which meant Booker was heading into his first ever wrestling event. He got his boots and ring attire ready to go and headed out the door, hyped for his first show. Booker got to the arena for the show, then he went into Mr. Boesch's office, but was informed that he was not going to be on the show tonight, but he was incouraged to stick around and watch the show, and try to pick something up that will help him in his career. He decided to take the boss up on his offer, and this is what he saw:
Houston Championship Wrestling Sunday, May Week 1, 1983 Attendance: 970 Buddy Landell and Boris Zhukov defeated Mil Mascaras and Tiger Conway Jr. King Kong Bundy defeated Butch Reed for the Houston Television Title Hector Guerrero defeated The Snowman Gino Hernandez and Junkyard Dog defeated Super Destroyer and Kendo Nagasaki Steve Williams defeated Art Crews Shawn Michaels defeated Brady Boone
Booker was very excited, as this was the first big wrestling event he had ever been there live for, and this excitement seemed to validate his choice to get into the ring. Now hopefully next week, he will find his way into the ring for his first action in his very young career.

Booker Huffman came into the second week of his wrestling career looking to learn all that he could to better his chances of getting a match this week at Houston Wrestling's weekly event. Booker headed to the local gym, where he went straight to the wrestling instructor, who said he would teach him for the right price. Booker and the trainer put in three days of work on Booker's in-ring skills, and they focused on the in-ring abilities of: Basics, Stamina, and Psychology. This improved wrestling skill will hopefully cause Booker to gain more attention from the bookers at Houston Championship Wrestling, and will catapult him into the main players on the roster.

It was the second week of May, which meant that it was once again time for Houston Championship Wrestling. Booker got his stuff together and headed down to the arena, and into Mr. Boesch's office once more, only to be told that he is not on the card once again. Booker was dissapointed that for two straight weeks he had been used, but Mr. Boesch reaffirmed him that he would get worked into the card eventually, he just had to improve a little more inside the ring. When he went backstage and met some of the wrestlers in the locker room, they were buzzing about a big show last night half way across the country. They were talking about the big happenings in the promotion Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. Booker did not know much of the national wrestling scene except what was going on in the Mid South, but he knew of MACW and had a sense of how important they were, as they had the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. The wrestlers at the event were talking about NWA World Champion Ric Flair sucessfully defending his title against Ivan Koloff. But they said the main point of the show was the announcement that they had signed a great wrestler in Terry Gordy. They were also talking about the WWF Challenge show last night as Bob Backlund defended his WWF Championship against Don Muraco. Booker then got into positon to watch the show, and after this good show he was pumped to hopefully get the oppertunity to get into a Houston ring in the near future. Here is what got him pumped up:
Houston Championship Wrestling Sunday, May Week 2, 1983 Attendance: 1,045 Masked Superstar and Super Destroyer defeated Junkyard Dog and Mil Mascaras to retain the Houston Tag Team Titles King Kong Bundy defeated Gino Hernandez to retain the Houston Television Title Butch Reed and Tiger Conway Jr. defeated Steve Williams and Hector Guerrero Kendo Nagasaki defeated The Snowman Art Crews defeated Brady Boone Team Fly defeated Shawn Michaels and George Weingeroff
The third week of Booker's young career got under way Monday morning, and he hit the gym hard, wanting to improve his abilities in hopes of impressing Mr. Boesch enough to give him a chance inside the Houston Wrestling ring. He went to the trainer, and requested that he learn more technical abilities to his already good knowledge of a brawling style. They worked on Booker's Chain Wrestling ability, and Booker was happy with how he developed. Sunday he got ready for yet another Houston Championship Wrestling, but when he got the arena he got the same old story. Mr. Boesch said they had nothing for him, but was working to come up with a program that will get Booker inside the ring. He then made the decision that if he isn't booked in the show next week he will have to go out and look for a second promotion to work for, to prevent running out of money. Booker still went backstage, and although he was not getting any new friends, he listened closely to the already established wrestlers of HCW, trying to pick up on something that will help him get his career off the ground. While listening to them he heard them mention MACW again, this time saying that Ric Flair was making a case to be a legend in the industry, as he defended his NWA World Heavyweight Championship twice during the week, once against Ivan Koloff and once against Harley Race. Booker then got into position to watch Houston Championship Wrestling, thinking that since HCW has a big event at Sam Houston Colliseum next Saturday, he will have a very good oppertunity to impress a large number of people, if he can actually get in the ring. Here it what he saw at this HCW event:
Houston Championship Wrestling Sunday, May Week 3, 1983 Attendance: 970 Mil Mascaras defeated Super Destroyer Gino Hernandez defeated Boris Zhukov Kendo Nagasaki defeated Tiger Conway Jr. Hector Guerrero defeated The Snowman Shawn Michaels defeated Brady Boone
Booker got up bright and early Saturday morning, getting ready for the big event at Sam Houston Colliseum. Booker did not get his hopes up too high, because he knew that at the last three Houston Wrestling events, he was not booked, and was stuck watching the events as a spectator. A couple of hours before the opening bell Booker pulled into Sam Houston Colliseum, and walked inside, and even though he was on Houston Wrestling's roster, not many people recognized him, and he walked uninterrupted into Mr. Boesch's office, not expecting much. He then was hit with a big suprise, Mr. Boesch told him that the booking team has come up with something for him. He is assigned to a tag team match for the evening. He would be teaming with The Snowman, to take on Kendo Nagasaki and Art Crews. Booker was very excited and headed backstage to get his gear on for the first time, which was plain black tights, with plain black boots. He listened in to the locker room talk, and the workers talking about the big week in WWF, which saw their champion Bob Backlund defend his title against Andre the Giant. They were talking about how this may solidify Backlund's status as an elite wrestler, and talk about how they are more and more impressed with how WWF has been going in the last couple months. Booker then headed to where the set for the show was, and headed out to ringside, and a pindrop could be heard. Only one noise was heard around the arena, a very deep voice was heard yelling, "Let's Go Booker!" This voice came from about halfway into the stands, as Booker's brother Lane was seated, ready to see his little brother have his first ever match. Booker did not sit back and celebrate his first victory, as he went to the gym, and trained hard, even though he had another event that night. He worked on his Brawling and Wrestling Basics. He then headed straight from the gym to his second event in two nights for Houston Wrestling. He arrived at the arena and headed into Mr. Boesch's office, where the boss rewarded his big match last night by telling Booker that he has been booked in the opening match for tonight's Houston Championship Wrestling event, in a two out of three falls match against Buddy Landell. Booker then headed to the locker room to get his plain black wrestling attire on, and overheard the wrestlers talking about how this week Ric Flair once again defended his NWA World Heavweight Championship, but this time it was against Jack Brisco. He then got hyped up and headed to the set for the opening match of the evening. Booker got up early Monday morning, a morning that just happened to be his 18th birthday. Booker and his brother Lane went out to celebrate his birthday, then Booker resolved to spend the rest of the week improving his skill inside the ring. He spent quite a bit of time at the gym during the week, and focused on one thing, Mat Wrestling. This training made Booker alot better at working a mat based match, and it was a small step towards making himself an all-around wrestler. The week flew by, as before he knew it, it was already Sunday, and time for Houston Championship Wrestling. Booker got his things together and headed out for the arena, and when he arrived he was informed that after being on two straight shows last week, they were giving him the night off. He then headed to the locker room, where he still hadn't met a real friend, and listened as they talked about Ric Flair's brilliant defense of his NWA World Heavyweight Championship over Greg Valentine. He then headed out to the stands to watch the show, not too upset about not being booked, knowing that Mr. Boesch was impressed enough to put him on a show before, so he be back on the show before he knows it. Booker spent the second week of June reviewing what he already knew in the ring, and not learning anything new, but he fortified his current skills. Sunday then rolled back around, and it was time for the second Houston Championship Wrestling event of the month. Booker arrived at the arena, and was told that there was to be a big meeting, with every member of Houston Wrestling to be involved. They all went to the meeting place, where Paul Boesch informed everybody that running day to day operations and be head booker of HCW was too much to manage, and he had hired a man to be the new head booker. This man's name was Mike Graham, and he told the roster that he is going to do everything in his power to put Houston Wrestling on the national map, and hopefully build some big stars in the process. After the meeting, Mike Graham and Mr. Boesch requested to meet with each member of the roster individually. While waiting in line Booker learned that HCW had released Shawn Michaels, a worker who hadn't done much to prove himself, but a man that Booker thought had a future in the business, and would eventually be a showstopper in this business. When Booker had his meeting with Graham and Boesch, they told him to not get discouraged at not being booked recently, as he is only 18 years old, and has a whole lifetime ahead of him. They then told him that they are going to try to build him as a future star in this company, and he will be going one on one with Art Crews tonight to prove himself. Booker then puts on his black tights and boots, and heads out to the ring for his match, looking to impress the new head booker of HCW. The third week of June was a very uneventful week in the life of Booker Huffman. He did not have the money to go out and train this week, as he needed to save up enough money just to get by. The one thing he did have to look forward to was Houston Championship Wrestling this week. He left for the arena on Sunday afternoon, and got to the arena and went into Mike Graham's office. Graham then told Booker that he had nothing for him this week, which upset Booker greatly because he needed the money pretty badly. He then went and talked to Mr. Boesch about his situation, and he informed him that nowhere in his contract did it say he could only wrestle for HCW, and told him that he could go work for another promotion or two if he wanted, and that might even help him in Houston Wrestling. Booker took this advice to heart while he sat and watched the great night of Houston Championship Wrestling action. June Week 4, 1983 Monday morning Booker got up, remembering what Mr. Boesch had told him, and got in contact with Joe Blanchard from Southwest Championship Wrestling, a promotion based out of Booker's home region, the Mid-South. Booker did not particularly like their hardcore style of wrestling, but he was running short on money, and would sacrifice his potiential well being for the time being, so he could make a little money, and hopefully get his name out their to the bigger promotions in the Mid-South, and the rest of the country for that matter. Early the next day Mr. Blanchard called Booker back, and proposed that Booker comes to SWCW headquarters and sign his contract with them, because he was accepted to SWCW. He headed to their headquarters and inked an 8 month contract with them, and he would be wrestling as a babyface, under the name Booker Huffman, just like in HCW. He then was handed this SWCW promotional booklet:
Southwest Championship Wrestling Promotion Type: Hardcore Size: Small Location: Mid South Schedule Southwest Championship Wrestling (Every Friday) SWCW on Tour! His first day of work for this new promotion is Friday, and hopefully he can get some work, and finally get his career off to a good start.
