Margot Bouchard, in her first Winnipeg appearance, ended the Winnipeg winning streak of Renée Martel by dubious means as she defeated Renée by pinfall when Bouchard put her feet on the middle rope for illegal leverage as she pinned Renée with a schoolgirl rollup. Prior to the match, Bouchard debuted her upgraded tough-girl look, complete with entrance music (mentioned in the previous chapter), as she made her way to the ring for the introductions, then taunted the fans and argued with them to rile them up before dominating a good part of the match with her roughhouse tactics against Renée, who later drew support from the crowd and rallied to fight back against Bouchard before the latter took advantage of a missed dropkick by Renée to cheat her way to the win.

  4. August 1966

Back at Michèle Richard's apartment, she and Renée Martel were in the living room as they finished watching a TV documentary program on the life of Gorgeous George, the pioneering flamboyant wrestler who had died back in 1963, and had watched the program with interest. "Well, that was a pretty good show - if kind of sensationalistic," Renée remarked as the program ended.

"Yeah, I guess it was," Michèle said as she got up and walked over to the TV set to change channels. "Didn't your dad get to wrestle him a few times?"

"He did - and in fact, Gorgeous George was an early opponent of Papa's when Papa was about three years into his career," Renée replied. "I was only about a year old when he first faced George at the Forum back in 1948."

"How'd that match go?" Michèle asked.

"George won," Renée said. "I was too young to have seen the match then, but Papa told me about it years later. They faced each other a few more times after that, in and around Los Angeles while we were living down there and up in San Francisco for Roy Shire. I was there to see it the last time Papa faced George in 1962, when George's career was winding down and Papa was one of his last opponents - and that time, Papa won."

"Ever get to meet him in person?" Michèle said.

"I did, when I went to meet Papa backstage after the card was over and he and George were talking," Renée said. "Even then, he was trying to live up to the image he portrayed in the ring. I'll admit, he was quite an interesting character."

"After seeing that documentary about him, I believe it," Michèle remarked. "And I'll also admit, I also had a reason for inviting you here to watch the documentary with me."

    "Oh, what's that?" Renée wondered.

"You know how I've developed my wrestling image as a tough girl over the past two years, right?" Michèle said.

    "Sure," Renée said.

"Well, I want to take that image as Margot Bouchard to the next level," Michèle said as she went into her bedroom for a moment, then she came back out sporting a new black leather jacket she had put on. "I bought it at Morgan's after saving up to get it. So, what do you think?"

Renée took a moment to look over the leather jacket. "You know, I think that might work to add to your ring persona," she then said of the jacket. "I like it."

"Good, I thought you would," Michèle said as she then walked over to her stereo system. "And I also thought, if Gorgeous George can come to the ring accompanied by entrance music, I see no reason why I can't do that too. Here, give this a listen," she added as she put a 45 RPM record on the stereo's turntable and played the song, which turned out to be a hard rock tune by a local Francophone band.

After the song finished, Renée was sold on Michèle's idea. "You've got an idea that just might click if you can convince Johnny to go for it," she said.

"That's what I plan to do next time I see him," Michèle said. "In fact, since I'm heading with you to Winnipeg for that Alex Turk event on Saturday, I'm gonna see if I can convince Turk to let me debut my enhanced image at his show. In any case, if I can use this to add to my persona and get more people to come out to see me get my butt kicked or to see an opponent try to shut my mouth, then I've done my job."

"Well, Mr. Turk is a bit of a traditionalist as a promoter," Renée said, "but if you can sell him on your image and convince him to let you use entrance music like Gorgeous George did, then you're halfway there already. After that comes the fans, and they're the ones you really have to sell it to."

"And that's what I'm gonna do," Michèle said with a sly grin.

This (via YouTube) is the proposed entrance theme song Michèle played for Renée as part of her planned image upgrade (note that it was recorded in French):

Marcel Martel defeated Gorgeous George. Though George was nearing the end of his wrestling career at this point, he was still playing up his perennial gimmick as the flamboyant "glamour boy" heel that made him a household name throughout the 1950s as he taunted the fans during his entry and pre-match ritual and utilized his usual stalling tactics and cowardly heel mannerisms (including refusing to even lock up with Martel at times and calling him a "dirty cowboy" at one point), but the popular Martel rallied and brought George's career one step closer to its close by scoring the submission win via the sleeperhold.

  8. I have been really enjoying this diary. Love the presentation.

I honestly did not know Ronnie Garvin and Abdullah the Butcher went as far back as the mid-1960s.

Yep, Garvin got his start back in 1962 while there are varying dates on when Abdullah debuted (Wikipedia claims 1958 as his debut year, while Cagematch.net gives 1961 and Wrestlingdata.com gives 1965, but all agree that he first started wrestling as Abdullah in 1967).

  9. Nice start to this diary, BTW. I remember watching WCW back around that time and the Dangerous Alliance vs. pretty-much-all-the-faces feud at that point was red-hot. Though WCW was still a few years from overtaking the WWF in viewership and ratings in the Monday Night War, I'd reckon that a lot of folks were still tuning in to the shows (World Championship Wrestling, Worldwide, Pro, etc.) wanting to see Paul E. Dangerously get his loud mouth shut by Sting, the Steiners or one of the other big faces.

(The main studio camera moves in on ringside post-match for a ringside interview [translated from the original French] for Sur le Matelas)

INTERVIEWER: That was quite a match we just had, and it's easy to see why my two guests at this time are two of the up-and-coming young female stars in All-Star Wrestling, Renée Martel and Claire Lepage. Great match you two had today, Claire.

CLAIRE LEPAGE: Thanks, ______. You know, Margot Bouchard and this new girl Marianne Duchesne are two tough competitors and there's few tougher girls out there than Bouchard, but Renée and me held our own today and they didn't get the win over us. Next time out, they won't be as lucky because we'll give it all we got and work our way to the win - right, Renée?

RENÉE MARTEL: Exactly right, Claire, that's what it's all about. Bouchard, let me tell you this - you and me have been fighting it out in wrestling rings all over Quebec and beyond for over a year now and you've been my most persistent rival. You've stopped at nothing to try to beat me to back up your claims of superiority, but you've tried tricks against me that you've never tried against other wrestlers - and why? Because you know, deep down, that you think I'm the better wrestler and you want to knock me down the ladder and keep me down so you can then say you're the best. But if you need to pull dirty tricks against me to try to win, that tells me all I need to know and all the fans need to know when they see us wrestle. But let me say something else...

MARGOT BOUCHARD: (Coming in to interrupt as the studio audience reacts with some boos and jeering) Just a minute, Martel! Where do you get off saying that I need to use dirty tricks to beat you in our matches, huh? I don't need to use anything fancy to beat my other opponents, and I sure don't need them to beat you! All I need is my skills and a few good fists to put you down for the count!

MARTEL: Is that so? Grabbing tights, putting your feet on the ropes for illegal leverage to get pins - is that what you call using your skills? If you can't beat me clean the way you do other opponents, what's that say about you then?

BOUCHARD: Really? You wanna put your money where your mouth is, then?! Go ahead, then, let's see what you got! (Bouchard then pushes Martel and an argument breaks out pitting Bouchard against Martel and Lepage as the audience reacts to the arguing when All-Star Wrestling promoter Bob Langevin arrives and intervenes)

BOB LANGEVIN: Okay, girls, hang on a minute. We won't settle anything here now by arguing at ringside. Margot, you want another shot at Renée?

    BOUCHARD: You bet I do!

LANGEVIN: And Renée and Claire, you want to take Margot on again?

    MARTEL: That's what we want!

LEPAGE: Just name it, time and place!

LANGEVIN: Alright, then let's make it official - a rematch with Renée Martel and Claire Lepage against Margot Bouchard and Marianne Duchesne this coming Monday night, July 11 at the Paul Sauvé Arena in Montreal.

BOUCHARD: (Pointing at Martel and Lepage) You both better be at the top of your game on Monday night because I will - and that night, me and Marianne walk out the winners! Count on it! (Bouchard then leaves)

INTERVIEWER: Okay, Renée and Claire, final thoughts?

LEPAGE: Yeah, you bet we'll be at the top of our game! And you know what else, Bouchard? We'll have the fans on our side when we meet Monday night! (The audience reacts with cheers)

MARTEL: That's right, Claire. And just remember this, Bouchard - don't write checks with your mouth that your backside can't cash! We'll see you in Montreal Monday night! (More audience cheering)

INTERVIEWER: And that's going to be some match! We'll be back with more wrestling right after some words from our sponsors!

Highlights of Édouard Carpentier & Johnny Rougeau vs. Fred Blassie & Bulldog Brower from July 4 in Montreal were shown to set up the TV main event.

Fred Blassie defeated Édouard Carpentier © via match stoppage to win the title when Carpentier was ruled unable to continue due to excessive blood loss. Post-match, Blassie celebrated with his newly-won title belt and obnoxiously taunted the studio audience, who responded with boos and jeering as Carpentier was tended to by the referee and a ringside doctor.
