Bryan Alvarez claims WWE planted pro-Cody Rhodes signs at Vengeance Day

I don’t know that he knows any more than we do. But if we are to believe that is true, there is something I heard a while back that holds true: whenever some news leaks, ask yourself “who benefits from this information leaking?” And when you answer that, you have your answer as to the source.

Wrestling fans are a nutty bunch - myself included. But the internet is a different animal. The negativity could be largely coming from bots or whatever, or have been started by them. I will vent my frustrations here, but don’t worry too much about it outside of it. If the story is not compelling, I will enjoy the rest of the show and have that match on in the background.

What happens when it’s Cody Roman with Rock as ref and he turns, Roman retains

If it’s this, I would see Cody vs Rock at Summerslam and then Vs Roman hopefully by Survivor Series. I am all for long term stories but the Bloodlines isn’t big enough to warrant Cody taking 7 more months after Summerslam to get to Roman again.0

This decision isn't about the WWE Title, unfortunately. WWE wanted Cody Vs Reigns and Punk Vs Rollins as the two main events. It's an anniversary year, it stacks up, and there would have been a Brick match, and probably a Rock appearance.

WWE would prefer Cody Vs Rollins and Rock vs Reigns rather than Priest / Drew Vs Rollins and Cody Vs Reigns (with a Rock appearance and no Brock). This also, in isolation makes sense.

The issue, of course, is they've done a good build for Cody Vs Reigns II. In a way they're unlucky, as if Punk's injury was known about first all they needed to do was throw Rock in the Rumble, and although there would have been dissent it would have been far less.

But Cody Vs Rollins / Rock Vs Reigns is a set of main events which will sell more. I get the feeling that they're not even sure how fit Rollins will be in April, so have ensured that he's against a vet that could work with him injured to still pull out a great match. I've gone through other scenarios in my head, and whatever I come up with no other scenario makes the World Heavyweight Title worthy of headlining Day 1 of WrestleMania. It shouldn't matter as WWE should trust Bailey / IYO, Rhea / Lynch, or Gunter / someone to be able to Main Event, but it's an anniversary year, and they're shooting higher.

Personally, I don't mind it. The only thing I wanted to see out of Cody / Reigns II was a title change - I'm not sure if the match up and feud justified two WrestleMania main events in a row. Personally, I'd have Priest cash in his title shot while Rhodes was injured to make it Priest Vs Cody at WrestleMania, adding Rollins if he is properly fit. Either Cody wins, or an injured Rollins costs him the match, setting up the two to feud to SummerSlam. A titleless Cody would go into Rumble 25 looking for the threepeat but just miss out, before winning at Elimination Chamber and winning at Mania 41. If Cody has the title Reigns wins the Rumble or (preferably) Elimination Chamber, and they meet for it at Mania. Of course, a lot could go wrong before then.

And while you make sense 100%, I don’t have to like it. 🙃

The only thing is they cannot keep talking about “finishing the story” that whole time, not when it looks like Cody willingly chose to not finish his story. Stop with the term until Cody builds up steam in the next Rumble.

I get that they want to involve The Rock for WM, but do they actually need him to have a match to make giga numbers? WM sells itself.

Since I don't follow WWE that much, what would be the preffered option for you? In a world before this 'promo'?

    1) Rock is a speical enforcer or ref, blocking all Bloodline BS and setting up a mega match with his fam for Summerslam, where title-less Roman is no longer a heavy favorite. Cody wins ofc to get the monkey off the back and evolve as a character

    2) Rock tries to take the spot, but Cody is not a putz and says 'Dwayne, you gotta earn it. Want this spot? Fight me for it'. They have a match at EC or whenever, where Bloodline makes it a no contest, thus resulting in a triple threat match for WM. Rock gets his rest spots to mask his age, and is protected by not being pinned. Again, goes on to face Roman at Summerslam one on one, no title

In current scenario, there's no development for Cody or Roman's characters. Just same old stuff

Option 1 is what I would go with. At Elimination Chamber you have Bloodline assist Roman - to make people think that The Rock will win. At Mania, Cody is about to win (just like the one before) and the Bloodline comes out to interfere, and The Rock comes out and makes sure they can't interfere. You can then have that shot of Reigns on his knees looking around confused waiting for the help to arrive, The Rock yelling and pointing at him, and then Cody hits a finisher or two.

The following Monday (or you can wait until Friday if you want the storyline to be Smackdown exclusive), Roman is livid. You could even have them ready to attack Rock's daughter, and when The Rock comes out to save her, she turns and joins The Bloodline. Then, you have him get a severe enough beating where the next time he comes out is in the build up to Summer Slam. Of course, TKO would then have to put out a message saying that The Rock was not actually badly beaten because most investors would probably believe it's true.

Then again, I had thoughts on how Reigns could lose the belt ever since he won both but before he unified them.

  4. Who knows if the TV show was ever really in play, but NWA will get a show on the CW App and website. Wonder if it will always be available, or if it's going to be one of those things where the shows will be available for a month.

First show is next Tuesday (February 6th) with 3 title matches - EC3 vs Matt Cardona being the main event.

Not sure if this is the right thread, so apologies in advance! Playing as SWF (as thats all I do apparently), I have a bit too many people on my roster. 116 to be exact, although I have around 8 tag teams, and also a decent sized womens division. I've hired wrestlers mainly main event talent that I sort of have a part plan for, but no concrete plan for. I have a few titles currently; I re-launched the shooting star as a normal tertiary title, and created the intercontinental as a floating between primary and secondary also. But given all the main event talent I have, I feel I need a 2nd Primary main event title. The other option im thinking is just bring in a legends title as a floating title as have a seperate division of my 40yr plus stars. Any advice? How would I (storyline-wise) put in a 2nd Primary main title when I don't really want to do a brand split?

I have no experience with SWF, but I think the key to any title (not just another main event one) is making it feel unique. Something that a “belt collector” would have a reason to go after - if he meets the criteria - or at least have a reason to not ignore.
Do you have a lot of brawlers? Do you have a lot of guys that might fit a style and one that kind of bucks the trend?

For example, let’s say you have a Hardcore/Brawler/Brass Knuckles title. You would have a large enough division for it. Is there a character that is anti-hardcore that might want to bring prestige to the division? Bonus points if you make it someone who will still use underhanded hardcore tactics despite speaking out against them. Or you can use it to show who the top dog is in that division.
Another option is to have it defended against “local” talent. Not the people you bring in, but against people on your roster that are based in different areas of the country.
Maybe you have increasingly difficult defenses and after X amount they can go after the World title. But make it something difficult so that you can really build someone up by doing it. Maybe someone keeps getting screwed about of their title match. So they use this as a way to finally be able to get it.
Might be helpful to see who the belt is meant for to come up with some specific ideas.

My first WWE show in a long time, and I have mixed feelings (apologies for what turned into a rather rambling rant in parts). The women's rumble was fun, at least in terms of the surprise factor and "feeling like a rumble" for lack of a better term. I thought having Jordynne Grace felt like a distinct departure in terms of how the WWE treats the rest of the industry (especially in terms of how the commentary team referred to her). As an aside, the commentators were just awful, and it really doesn't seem like Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn being gone has improved anything.

    Insipid and obnoxious all throughout.

Anyway, apart from the fun surprises, the match was pretty bad in terms of in-ring quality. There were a lot of botches, even from some people who are usually solid. Sometimes these things happen, everyone makes mistakes after all, but there's no excuse for giving Maxxine Dupri, of all people, that kind of spot. There was also something awkward with Kacy Catanzaro and I'm not even sure if it was a botch or just terrible commentary, where she got dumped out but landed in a crowd of people. The commentators mentioned that her feet hadn't touched the floor, but then she just rolled off. Kofi's anti-climactic elimination later in the night reminded me of it vaguely, but I also recall a similar spot where he landed with one foot on a chair and the commentators played it up like he was going to get back in, and then he just never did.

I was surprised to see Nia Jax get so much heat, from an otherwise pretty lifeless crowd, but I assume that's just because I haven't been watching. Kairi Sane was made to look really stupid with her elimination spot, one of the many things that contributed to my impression that Vince's absence isn't really going to change a lot of WWE's horribleness. I really enjoyed the finish, however, and there were a few cool spots, and I ended up preferring this match to the men's, despite the much better in-ring work from the latter.

I skipped the four way because it seemed utterly pointless, and then I skipped Logan Paul (I don't get it, I don't ever want to get it, I want him to go away).

As I said, the men's rumble had much better wrestling in it, and I was broadly pleased with it. The comedy stuff went on way too long, and whilst I can handle R-Truth, the Pat McAfee stuff was wretched. He seemed genuinely popular, which is presumably a cultural thing. It just annoyed me, and seemed like a waste of an entrant. Speaking of entrants, however, I'm glad neither rumble had one of those spots were a wrestler never enters the ring. The commentary got way worse during this match, with the three guys practically mocking the very concept of a rumble, "imagine if" this guy won, "imagine if" that guy won, yes, thanks for reminding me that of the thirty guys I'm going to see, only a handful are currently featured in your long-running action/adventure television storyline.

When I go back to these events, I usually switch the commentary to French.

There were no real surprises, and whilst I'm not someone who thinks a rumble has to give a spot to a legend, they already threw away a spot to an announcer who didn't even take a bump. The lack of fanfare for Kofi's elimination irritated me, and not just because I wanted to see him do a cool spot, but because in general I expected them to maybe start treating him like the former world champion that he is.

I don't think the finish really worked, I guess because I never really bought CM Punk as a serious threat to Cody Rhodes. Like, one of them looks like a million bucks, is the cover star on the video game and has a built-in storyline, and the other one is shorter, slimmer and going grey. Not to say it was bad. I felt satisfied in the end, and generally enjoyed myself. I might stick with it for the WM build.

It’s funny because a lot of what you say I have said about workers other people have enjoyed (not getting Bray’s appeal, Edge being presented as a legitimate threat when he looks like anything but) - I guess it’s just a matter of perception or personal taste. Kofi has had a few botches on his Rumble elimination saves before - I don’t remember the last time they made a big deal about his save spot. One of the girls in NXT did it at their show prior to the Rumble in their battle royal. And while I enjoy Kofi, I can’t take him seriously as a champ - not with the pancake throwing, unicorns, etc. Cool for the kids and to move merch but not as a top guy spot.

    Again, personal taste.

This years Royal Rumble was... Alright. And I mean that as the event as a whole.

Women's starting out the night greatly with the return of Naomi, with another TNA Knockouts champion appearance is great to see, wish we got more of Grace and would like to see a legitimate partnership between the companies. Jade debut was handled the best. I'm not sure where to put her, but her appearance and her eliminating Nia was brilliant, she is one strong lady. Bayley winning is great and fully deserved. She's gone through hell and she deserves her Rumble victory.

Undisputed Championship match was chaotic and fun but the winner was never in doubt. Roman pinning Styles, whom he hasn't defeated as current champion helps emphasize he is GodKing and helps sell the men's winner more. Solo being involved mattered only once, but if you ask me, he is hindering Roman significantly. Had he been completely out of this match, Roman could've still won hands down. I like many others are tired of Roman winning with the Bloodline backing him, but he really doesn't need their help. I'd enjoy his reign more if that wasn't what kept the belt on him the most.

US Championship was a pretty standard match with a very clever finish, one that I really liked. Paul trying to use brass knux to only have them taken and used on him, AND KO gets DQ'd for having them just on his hand, that's a finish I have not seen and I thought it was brilliant. Where Owens goes from here I don't know, he got traded to SD without Sami and is feuding against a team of jerks on his own. I don't think he'll face be facing Paul at Mania for a rematch, but I wouldn't mind being wrong.

Men's Rumble was good, opening with Jey and Jimmy was a great choice as I hope it's a preview to them fighting at Mania. Andrade's return felt rather subdued but welcome indeed. I think his actions against Escobar will lead somewhere. No legends, or big returns (except for Sami) or even another TNA appearance which was kind of disappointing. Punks return to a Rumble was fun to see, though he's heel and leaning right on "Grey Jedi" territory. Cody winning felt good, despite everything I think he is the right man to go back to back and actually win this time. There were many red herrings with Rocky, reports, Punk, yadda yadda still. He is the right choice and with Elimination Chamber, Punk will get his Mania match. So win win.

That being said, this was an aggressive middle of the road Rumble event, despite my highlights, there wasn't anything that blew me away. The wrestling was solid as to be expected with the talents involved, but there wasn't anything to be overly memorable aside from Cody winning, Bayley winning, Punk being in a WWE ring again, Jade Cargills debut, TNA stars showing up, Andrade and Naomi's return, its one and done to be honest. See it once, don't need to rewatch.

But honestly, you had what...4 matches, and two were the Rumble? I think there was enough happening without them trying to be too clever by half (Jade winning, Bayley getting screwed, Roman not winning). Maybe it *was* middle of the road, but I also felt it struck the right tone. Nothing was really overshadowed and there were enough possibilities at the end of the Men's Rumble that you could see a few folks winning it.

I'm soooo happy we will get Cody Rhodes for the WWE championship at Mania once again, I just hope it won't become a three way with The Rock involved. Overall, I enjoyed the show a lot! The roster is stacked both for men and women, they look and act like stars, this 'Mania could be one for the ages.

Hopefully they have him come out to stop the Bloodline from interfering. Then, Roman perceives him as “costing him the title” and it sets up their match for Summerslam or something. You get Rock involved at WM, crowd pops, and throws babies in the air.

As for the rest of last night, the right people won without making it predictable or boring. Jade looks great. Not sure I want Nia as her first feud, but if that’s what it is, I can live with it.

Shortest Roman match in a while. I guess we are getting AJ vs LA at Wrestlemania.

And Paul retaining how he did made sense. Waller and Theory are going to be the official proxy for Paul, but at least you have Sami for back up.

Andrade being back was cool. Guessing Trinity is back full time now?

Rumors have suggested Bayley and I think that gives a fun route to Mania challenging Io. If it ends up being Jade though oof hard to image a captivating story much less the match at Maina

Bayley winning was the right move, I think. Becky can get her match against Rhea by winning the Elimination Chamber. But Bayley's story makes more sense this way. Sacrificing herself at War Games, Damage Ctrl gaslighting her into believing that they aren't phasing her out, and now that she has her shot of course it's going to be against Iyo. Hopefully it ends up being a 1 on 1 match at WrestleMania between them.

Funny thing is that I've already seen articles with film studio execs talking about their "bold new concept" of packaging streaming networks together. Give them five years and these idiots forgot cable packages even existed.

Hahahaha - Prime already does where you can pay for those channels and have them available on their app. But what I am saying is that if Viacom or CBS or whomever owns Paramount+ decides to pull the plug and license out their content to Netflix (or Peacock or whomever)…we will end up going from the original 2 (Netflix and Hulu) to Netflix and Disney plus one other. I think it will happen.

  11. 5 hours ago, Antonin said:

Same here. I know that all of pro sports and "sports entertainment" wants to go the subscription route eventually. The thing that amazes me is that they have been able to convince so many people to put up with this. Otherwise rational people are eagerly jumping through hoops and even paying extra to "stream" programs that used to be part of their normal overpriced cable package.

I refuse to do that. I grew up in the 60s. TV was free. Yes, there were only 3 channels, then 5 when we started to get UHF channels in my area. But I really do not think cable TV here in 2024 provides more value than TV in the 60s and 70s. I now have what seems like dozens of religious and shopping channels. Reality TV shows about "housewives" and other nonsense. "Sports" channels with programs that consist mainly of buffoons screaming at each other.  And then there's Fox "News."  My wife and I watch mainly The Filipino Channel, and NBA games, baseball and football when they are available on regular cable. But some evenings we just turn off the TV and read.

I'm not going to download an app and sign up for something else with another freaking password and another freaking user name and another monthly fee, just to watch wrestling or movies or anything else.  My local library provides far more entertainment value.

I am sure that is all baked into the numbers. I don’t have cable but would have given AEW a shot if their app was available. It is in the UK not in the US. I don’t care about them enough to jump through hoops to watch them. I haven’t had cable (nor do I miss it) for the last 20 years. I have plenty of other streaming services - Netflix is not one of them. So it’s unlikely that I will sign up. But then again, I haven’t had the channels to watch it, and haven’t suffered because of it.

But it’s also probably that your tastes have changed, too. I used to watch it religiously, channel hopping from TNT or TBS to USA or UPN.

I got the Network for the PPVs and NXT (great value) and get Peacock for half that now. Anything else I watch there is a bonus. But I used to also watch football every Sunday, too. Now, I don’t. Because it’s just not that important to me. They seem to do just fine without my viewership. I got Paramount for the UCL but if they suddenly lost that and Peacock got it, I would drop Paramount in a heartbeat. No need for them. Funny thing is, cable was overpriced especially because of things you didn’t want or need. Now all the streaming services are just as expensive! Eventually the less successful streaming services will consolidate, and much like with telephone companies we will go back to 3 or 4.

All I have said is that Punk waited until AEW was a place to be to sign on. I am not saying or inferring anything else. He was probably smart to wait and it probably did his own personal brand some good. But being smart to wait doesn't not make you a bandwagoner. I still think he is one and he would probably admit that he is too.

He got a text message from The Young Bucks in 2019 about joining AEW. Instead of replying to it, he sent a tweet about feeling disrespected by people who text him instead of showing him the proper respect by calling him. It's obvious that the way he handled this, combined with the timing of his arrival, rubbed some people the wrong way. He obviously didn't want to gamble his own reputation on AEW being a success. Maybe he was prudent to hold out but that doesn't change the timing of his arrival and the implications of it.

Apart from that Colt Cabana podcast that spawned several lawsuits, yeah, not a peep from Punk haha. I don't think he's an egomaniac, I don't think he really cares about the spotlight either. But he did do things between 2014 and 2021. He did fight in the UFC, he did do ComicCon, he did appear on WWE Backstage. He did do some acting. He didn't just do absolutely nothing at all.

Bleep, I was saying that tongue in cheek, but you made some excellent points.

As an aside, where did the whole thing with the lawsuits end up?

My biggest gripe with Punk was the media scrum that became Brawl Out. And some of it was Tony, really. To sit there and just take it? Terrible look, all around. And Punk did him no favors.

On the spotlight issue, I think the lawsuit is the big one (the Cabana podcast) but one could say that it was to right a perceived/actual wrong. But his UFC, acting, and Comic Con stuff? Don’t know how much he was a self promoter on those. Maybe I am blocking stuff out of mind - entirely possible. I read egomaniac/spotlight as finding any excuse to tweet or talk about a topic and making it about himself. I wasn’t expecting him to go find a 9-5, so not sure the expectation was that he would just drop off the edge of the earth.

  13. 17 minutes ago, MightyDavidson said:

Also his time away from the industry pretty much obliterates those "CM Punk is an egomaniac" arguments.  The man stepped out of the spotlight for seven years and not a peep was heard from him the entire time.  Hardly a man who can't stand being out of the spotlight huh?

Don’t worry, someone will be able to rationalize something from it. 🙃
