I enjoyed the promos sorta. Felt they were bland overall but had some good lines and the tenacity overall got me excited for the two locking up in the rumble. Babyface on babyface promo battle can be a difficult line to walk cause it forces fans to choose. Unless you have two ungodly over forces like a Rock and Austin it should be avoided. Punk came off as a heel to me in this, trying to get at Cody while Cody came off stoic and bored until Punk being the American Dream came up. This also gave me flashbacks to Cody’s last AEW promo about the Pipe Bomb.

Punk is a natural heel, to me. Even some of his other promos since he’s been back have had some heelish moments. Will work out well for his eventual turn.

Hook has always been presented as a big deal. He's always been presented as a killer. Kicking out did elevate Hook and it wasn't a "cheap pop" because they built towards it and paid it off with Joe having to choke Hook out. Hook also refusing to tap out further established his toughness.

Maybe barely raising the shoulder after 2, Joe with a crazy look of disbelief on his face, then straight to the choke would have done more for Hook (while protecting the world champ’s finisher). Unless the plan is for Hoe to be a transitional guy and we don’t care to protect his finisher. Fine with that too.

What came of the Undisputed Kingdom? Are they raising hell? Asserting their dominance?

A couple of thoughts, regardless of the fact that WWE is pretty entertaining atm ...

In the last month (month and a half?) both Charlotte Flair and Austin Theory injured themselves after botched ropes-related high-flying maneuvers that IMO could very well have been avoided. Some risks are not worth the reward.

Is it so necessary to spam suicide dives every show? Like 2-3 times every show lol and obviously the move itself loses value and meaning. I guess it is not possible to be a pro wrestler in 2023 if you don't do superkicks and suicide dives.

Stevie Richards mentioned on his channel that the WWE ropes are ropes and not cables (unlike the AEW - and I want to say WCW ropes) so you don't get the same amount of resistance. I really wouldn't mind seeing the styles toned down and saving those types of moves for special moments. Imagine a PLE with 1 suicide dive, preferably higher up on the card.

Oh dear, was the audience not reacting the way they wished?

So Hausman isn't just a Punk stooge on this, and we have to believe what he says? I wouldn't be surprised if it was true, but at least bring receipts. And his post on X was disingenuous - looking to stir the pot for the sake of stirring the pot.

I'm not sure Andrade will or should join Santos as I think they are a bit too encompassing in one stable. Santos needs to be the leader of the group to solidify his relevance on the main roster, and I don't see how Andrade can be below him in the hierarchies. Maybe the other way around? I mean LWO kinda needs him as their top man, maybe leaving Rey Mysterio more as a occasional presence. Zelina is also in there!

Or maybe he'll just stay on Raw lol wouldn't mind him vs Gunther for the Intercontinental title down the road.

Yeah, I thought about him being in the LWO after - you make some good points. He just seems like a much better heel than he does face.

And I guess we're getting Rock vs Roman? What awful news, really. Unless Rock is staying for a few months, it telegraphs what's going to happen. It would make no sense for Rock to beat Roman either. Not a fan. If we can make it happen prior to WM I'd be OK with it. Gives Roman the rub (I guess). Just not a fan, really.

I'm not even a big Kyle O'Reilly fan, but I'd much rather see him and Bobby Fish than Taven and Bennett who have less personality, star quality, and in ring ability than KOR and Fish.

It's like expecting a Horsemen reunion and getting a Magnificent Seven reunion instead.

I don't know why that made me laugh as much as it did.

To be fair, I went to the last Thunder/next to last Nitro, so I will always have a soft spot for The Magnificent Seven.

  7. I use a charismatic retired wrestler who is way too over for the size of my company. Gives me the excuse that it would have a lot of money to start with, but perhaps not the business connections to start off at a big enough level. And then he's the authority figure, but usually in the first several months he comes in occasionally to pop a rating - opening show to welcome the crowd, maybe run down the PPV card and introduce tournaments, that sort of thing. Then I have some charismatic youngster who I want to move up involved in a storyline with him (complaining to the authority figure, trying to prove himself, etc)

Given that according to Wrestling Observer AEW got Collision on WBD because they agreed to bring back Punk, it makes since that WWE would get a better deal with WBD because Punk signed there.

Multiple sources have confirmed that precedent exists for WBD to make a deal contingent on Punk joining.

I'm not saying Hausmen isn't biased. This statement definitely is supported by some evidence.

And given that CW Network moved NWA's deal over similarly flimsy justifications to accept a better deal, I could see WBD doing the same thing with AEW.

Either way, I think AEW still has a bright future. They just set an attendance record for Wembley, signed the biggest English free agent and just signed their ace MJF long-term.

Plus, their biggest Female star Jamie Hayter should be back soon. Hayter is another star English wrestler who will immediately improve the women's division.

2024 could be AEW's banner year.

    Let's not overreact.

Except we're taking same "journalist's" word that there was ever a deal with the CW. All that was said was a "top 20" network, and then people started speculating. Then the cocaine spot happened and NXT signed with the CW, so they assumed it was all connected. We don't know any of that to be a fact. All these folks are just reporting what their people are telling them. How come no trade magazines mentioned an NWA deal falling through "due to a questionable segment" when NXT was signed? If anything, what I suspect happened is that IF CW was ever looking at NWA, they then saw NXT as a much better alternative to grow their network. Which it is.

As far AEW and Punk, maybe they lose Collision on WBD, but why should *that* affect Dynamite? The ratings might, but that's a separate issue.

In any event, I wish Tony the best. I just want him to be less thin skinned - it's a terrible look.

  9. Is Tony really that thin skinned that he feels the need to respond to criticism he gets on X? Dude, you're a creator - once you create, you're not there to try to explain what something meant, or why you did it, or whatever. Let it be. I guess he only wants positive feedback on his product. Myopic, if you ask me.

And he should be looking to book coherently, not based on what the fans like. Tell a good story and the fans will like that.

The source to all that is Hausman, who is Punk's message man, so I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

NBA's right are up next year so WBD has a lot on their plate right now, and they are doing the best thing for them by meeting WWE. TK, on the other hand, is always hyping up the partnership and even refusing to listen to any offers, which IMO is dumb.

At the end of the day it's just business and none of us know anything about it.

By saying he's Punk's message man, the implication is that he's making it up. After all, Punk has no knowledge of what is going on at WBD or with WWE's TV rights. And yeah, Hausman may be making it up.

But as with any leak, the question to ask is "Who does this leaking out benefit?" And that's how you determine where it came from. As with most wrestling "news" I will take the side that Hausman is trying to piece this together just like anyone else, and that really he has no inside knowledge of anything.

You know, I think sometimes wrestling fans forget that wrestling is ultimately glorified stage fighting. It's theatre. Entertainment. It's okay to have preferences, but to say (or even imply) that only one style/type of wrestling is willfully ignoring the prior statement. I mean, if that was true DDT would have collapsed a long time ago. AEW, from the start, has been committed to having as wide a variety of wrestling styles and character types as possible.

I know some people don't like Orange Cassidy, but a big part of why he's so over is the variation in the gimmick. It's a master class in out of ring psychology. The valleys of low effort and motivation better highlight the peaks of high effort and  motivation, which is perfect for a babyface. It makes the heels who menace him seem more imposing as they provoke a stronger reaction than normal. No, not eery babyface should be like this, because then it wouldn't work. In fact, that's precisely why it does work, because nobody else is doing it. Orange is the only one who has such a wide gap between those peaks and valleys. It also helps that he's a small, agile guy and not a huge, jacked muscle man. In a sea of guys who have to yell to get across that they're more motivated than ever, Orange only has to speak in complete sentences in a serious tone of voice. That's damn fine and extremely consistent character work.

Abadon I'm willing to give a chance because I'm ) an Undertaker mark from way back thus I'm eager to see someone else pull off a similar gimmick, 2) I know that the person behind the facepaint has been literally working their ass off to get this chance. As in they're at least 30 pounds lighter than they were when they debuted for AEW a few years back. And 3), well, see the top statements again. Theatricality is, in my opinion, an integral part of wrestling. And I don't just mean pyro and presentation. I'm an eternal advocate for creative freedom within the limits of good taste, you see. We live in a world where a literal dead man and his pyromaniac brother were major characters for over 20 years. Where Steve Borden has played a surfer, The Crow, and the Joker. Where the insanity that was Broken Matt Hardy not only worked but got so over he won a main event title with it. So if Abadon is genuinely getting a run of appearances, I'm happy to give her a shot.

But then again, I'm very different from most posters to this thread. I prefer to seek the good in something rather than complain about the bad. As CinemaWins says, liking things is better than not liking things. Though that's just how I feel about it. Y'all can say whatever you want. Don't mind me.

I get *everything* you are saying. I was a huge fan of Breezango, and thought they should have beaten the Usos at that PPV they had. But my (limited) experience with OC feels different to me. He adds variety to the show, but a serious, top performer shouldn't be going along with it. It's the same way I feel about intergender matches - they should last 20 seconds with the guy turning her inside out with a massive clothesline. Unless the size difference goes the other way (e.g. Spike Dudley vs Awesome Kong). That probably makes me a hypocrite, or worse, and if that's the case, I'm OK with it.

Bray's original incarnation was not my cup of tea, but I understand that people were losing their (expletive deleted) over him. To me, it was interminable Ultimate Warrior-like promos and goofy stuff, but it got over. I actually enjoyed the Firefly Funhouse stuff over his Fiend character. But again, it got over. For the most part, I just fast forwarded through his stuff. And while I agree that it's better to like things than not like things, as long as people are respectful I think it's great to hear other perspectives. For example, people sold me on the fact that Bray singlehandedly moved the storyline with Undertaker along. I went back and watched, and while I still wasn't thrilled, I can give the man his flowers on that. Otherwise, it may be kind of boring to just either agree on everything, or only talk about things we like. (How many people talk about things they dislike and use it as a platform to say what they would do differently?) What is odd are those people who find *nothing* they like, but continue to watch the show.

Punk is a wrestler who can slot in and make an impact outside the ring like few others. You could slot Punk in on color commentary or have him manage or be an authority figure and he's still a standout performer. In that way, Punk's resembles Jerry Lawler.

His promos are that good. A lot fans still overlook that.

WWE really needs to make the brands feel different. I struggle to care about which brand CM Punk chooses when RAW and Smackdown feel like the same show with a different coat of paint.

Maybe when the two are on different networks, WWE will make them feel a bit more different. Tweak the in-ring action a little bit or push tag teams on Smackdown or something.

But they *are* on different networks already. Part of me thinks that they would put Punk on Raw to start, then you can always bring him over during the draft. I still think Punk is going to get the title from Seth, and when Roman loses the title, Heyman will drop him like a bad habit. At that point, imagine the story that could be told - Roman being unable to win the big one against Punk while being able to win against pretty much anyone else. Could be a good way to build Reigns up as a babyface after this whole Tribal Chief period.

Abadon is a terrible gimmick. It's like ECW's Zombie. Feels like something that would fit with the Dungeon of Doom. Just cringe and lame.

Just like when Statlander pretended to be an alien and touched people's noses for some reason. No point in having that type of character in 2023/24.

I'd love to see more Joshis on AEW. While I don't follow it at all, that was the plan for the women's division from the start and covid ruined it. That's why I'm really excited to watch Mariah May wrestle, since she was on Stardom and that has been a highly-regarded promotion for some time (and I tried but couldn't get into it).

Or people going along with/selling for Orange Cassidy, yet here we are.
