I'm positive it's a work. Supposedly, there was interest on AEW's side in bringing him in two years ago and he shot it down as he was just starting a lengthy multi-year deal with NJPW. His post-WK promo came off to me like someone at their wit's end. Set such high goals for himself where suddenly the winner of the match attained 'god-like status' or whatever and he couldn't get the job done.

To tag onto Derek's point, the IWGP Heavyweight Championship's been reserved for the very top of the company through at least the last decade - save Styles and EVIL's reigns. Styles is obviously one of the best of his generation, but you wouldn't really expect a guy making his debut in the company to win the top belt. EVIL's reign only as the interim leader of Bullet Club (and even then I couldn't buy that) never sat well with me given to what I was used to level-wise of the previous champions (I didn't start watching regularly until 2017.) Had Jay been in Japan and able to go for the Heavyweight title at this time I feel he would've had the shot at Summer Struggle. Had they had EVIL go for the IC belt and Jay go for the HW belt that would've been better.

From that perspective, I get it. I think this "Winner Take All" deal they've had since WK14 put them in a hole. I can't find any other way they could ideally split the belts up besides having IC headline WK Night 1 and HW headline WK Night 2.

New Beginning tour's in Hiroshima two nights early next month but you couldn't really sell two straight nights of Ibushi vs. SANADA.

I like the idea of having two separate titles. Having them together works with the limited roster they have at the moment, but that's just my personal preference. If anything needs to change, I think Wrestle Kingdom needs to go back to being one night. I was into the two-night concept last year, but this year all I thought was 'there's no reason these cards couldn't be together on one night - besides the Switchblade/Ibushi/Naito situation.'

McMahon: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Vince McMahon coming to you live from the studio with Lord Alfred Hayes, welcoming you to another edition of Tuesday Night Titans. Lot of stuff to cover tonight from the past week of action in the World Wrestling Federation. To start off tonight's show, a heinous cheap attack by the WWF Intercontinental Champion Greg Valentine on his challenger, Junkyard Dog, concluded this weekend's episode of Wrestling Challenge.
Lord Alfred: An absolutely vicious attack by the champion. He may have realized Junkyard Dog had his number in the tag match that was the main event last week and decided he wanted to send a message anyway possible.
McMahon: Well, we can confirm for you folks at home that unfortunately Junkyard Dog will be out of action for at least the next week. He will not be competing on WWF television next week and you won't see him on any of our upcoming house shows at least for the next week. Big news for you fans at home for this upcoming week though, we will have a title match on free television for you this week as Wendi Richter will defend the WWF Ladies' Championship against Leilani Kai. At this time, I'd like you to welcome my guests this week on Tuesday Night Titans, Leilani Kai and her mentor, The Fabulous Moolah!

Kai and Moolah make their way out to the guest chairs, Kai not acknowledging the small number of fans allowed in the studio. Moolah received a mixed response, but she only acknowledged those cheering for her.

McMahon: Ladies, welcome to the show. Well, Moolah, you threw down the challenge to the WWF Ladies' Champion this week on behalf of your student, Leilani Kai. Why now? Why this week rather than waiting for Philadelphia?
Moolah: She's ready. Leilani Kai is ready. She is going to march into the RPI Field House in Troy, New York, and take what Wendi Richter knows isn't rightfully hers - the WWF Ladies' Championship. Richter beat me on a fluke, and Leilani's going to show just what a fraud Richter is when she beats her all over the ring.
McMahon: Ms. Kai, high praise from The Fabulous Moolah, but you seem just as confident?
Kai: We all see how fake she is, McMahon. Pretty girl just wanted to join this business for the fame and the glory, but she doesn't realize what hard work it is to be successful here. She won't put in the time to become good at this, and she's going to pay in Troy this Saturday.
Moolah: I've taught this girl right here everything I know. And we're going to turn that brat Richter into dust on Wrestling Challenge.

Lots of action tonight with a star-studded main event as in tag team action, we're going to see Junkyard Dog and Jimmy Snuka taking on the WWF Intercontinental Champion, Greg Valentine, and George Steele.
Ventura: Well, you know what side I'm betting on.
Monsoon: Wha-? We can't take bets!?
McMahon: I'm Vince McMahon joined by... as you can hear already, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura and Gorilla Monsoon.
Ventura: Oh, what a night we're to have here, McMahon. Junkyard Dog's been running his mouth for weeks now and Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine is finally going to shut him up.
McMahon: Of course, that being our main event of the evening - we've got several other superstars in action as well. Brutus Beefcake finds himself in action while Tony Atlas takes on local talent Doug Vines. But first, to the ring for our opening contest!

The U.S. Express w/Lou Albano vs. The Moondogs

Capt. Lou Albano's boys showed off their chemistry as a well-tuned unit - utilizing double team moves with impeccable precision to keep the match in their favor throughout most of its entirety. A couple of flashes of offense by The Moondogs were only temporary as a Flying Lariat from Windham earned the W for the U.S. Express.

After The Moondogs cleared the ring, Captain Lou entered it with a microphone in hand.

The U.S. Express is throwing down a challenge for those WWF World Tag Team Championships. Saturday Night's Main Event in Philadelphia, we're coming for the gold!

Monsoon: Young Windham and Rotundo have looked very impressive recently. Should the North-South Connection accept the challenge, this should be quite the competitive match.

A montage then airs of Hulk Hogan and Hillbilly Jim working out at a local gym with Hogan clearly there to provide pointers to the more inexperienced wrestler. After several clips of the two working out (Jim still in his regular attire of hat and overalls), the montage moves on to clips of Hogan showing Jim some techniques in the squared circle. The montage then ends as a clip of both men is shown.

Jim: Gee, Mr. Hogan, I knew today was going to be a workout, but I wasn't expecting to be completely wiped out from this!
Hogan: See, brother, you want to make it in the World Wrestling Federation, you've got to put in the work. You want to make it in the world at all, hard work and determination will get you there!
Jim: I think I might be determined to go take a dip in the river right now. Say, Mr. Hogan, with everything I've learned today, I think I'm ready to get back into the ring. Would you mind being in my corner next week in a match on Wrestling Challenge?
Hogan: Jim, you got it, brother. Let's see you put these skills to the test.

Monsoon: Hulk Hogan's helping a friend out and you find something wrong with that?

Beefcake led the way in terms of offense from bell to bell as he was able to show off his various skills in the ring against the more experienced Garea. A High Knee after the five-minute mark put Garea away in such a convincing effort, Johnny Valiant didn't even need to make his presence known on the outside.

Okerlund: Thank you, Vince. Standing with me at this time is indeed the WWF Ladies' Champion, Ms. Wendi Richter. Wendi, you've been on a strong run lately since dethroning The Fabulous Moolah as the WWF Ladies' Champion. Now, you look to the future. What do you see as being up next for you?
Richter: Well, Mean Gene, I intend on being a fighting championship and I welcome all challenges for this here championship belt. All challenges to all women around the globe are welcome. You step up to the plate, and I'll beat you.
Okerlund: Are you worried at all about a challenge from the former champion, The Fabulous Moolah?
Richter: If Moolah wants to come back and fight for this title, she'll get her rematch. And I-

Almost as if right on cue, The Fabulous Moolah enters the interview area with her protege, Leilani Kai, right in tow.

Moolah: Well, isn't that just fantastic? I'll be back for that WWF Ladies' Championship in due time, my dear. But, how about you have a new challenger step in first? My student, Leilani Kai, is itching for a challenge. How about you put your championship on the line? And let's not wait around for Saturday Night's Main Event, let's put this match on next week!
Richter: Moolah, like I said, I'm a fighting champion - and if you throw a challenge my way I will accept it. Leilani Kai, you want a shot at the Ladies' Championship next week? You're on!

Junkyard Dog and Jimmy Snuka vs. Greg Valentine and George Steele w/Mr. Fuji

Snuka and Steele weren't the main story in the match, but kept the fans interested when they took their turn inside the ring. Steele, much to the encouragement of Mr. Fuji, would bite away at the forehead of Snuka with the Fijian chopping away at The Animal to back him off. Snuka nearly was able to get a Superfly Splash at a point, but interference from the WWF Intercontinental Champion prevented it.

Once Junkyard Dog and Greg Valentine were in the ring, the fans became fully invested in the match. Each man seemed to have an answer for the other's offense, but it soon became evident that JYD's pure strength was allowing him to gain an advantage over the champion. Once JYD got Valentine up for
a Thump, Valentine was just about to scoot out of the hold as he leapt through the second and third ropes, retrieved his Intercontinental Championship belt, and started making his way to the back before seemingly collapsing near the entranceway. The referee was able to complete a count of 10 before signaling for the bell as JYD then made his way towards the downed champ.

Junkyard Dog and Jimmy Snuka def. Greg Valentine and George Steele in 13:03 when Valentine intentionally got counted out.

**POST-MATCH**

Junkyard Dog slowly makes his way towards the downed Valentine, acknowledging the fans on his way. Once he stands over the Intercontinental Champion, Valentine turns with the belt in hand and cracks JYD over the head with it. The impact stuns the title challenger as Valentine is quick to his feet and cracks Junkyard Dog over the head a second time with the belt - knocking him out senseless. Valentine briefly raises the belt over his head over his Saturday Night's Main Event challenger's prone body before making his way to the back.

RATING: 66

McMahon: A despicable, cheap attack by Greg Valentine on Junkyard Dog!
Monsoon: He played possum! I don't believe it!
Ventura: Got to get ahead any way you can, Monsoon! Any way you can!

McMahon: Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Night Titans! Vince McMahon with you all and as always I'm joined by Lord Alfred Hayes. Quite the interesting week in the World Wrestling Federation, right Lord Alfred?
Lord Alfred: Quite the interesting week indeed, Vince. Seems like the road to Saturday Night's Main Event is becoming more and more clear.
McMahon: Right you are, indeed. Last week's WWF Wrestling Challenge was capped off with Andre the Giant standing tall after Ken Patera and the Heenan Family, but I'm positive Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan didn't take kindly to that.
Lord Alfred: *Looks around* We all know what kind of man Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan is, and any hits to the ego don't quite play well with the man. I'm positive he's plotting Andre the Giant's comeuppance at this moment.
McMahon: Andre may have very well painted a target on his back on the road to the Philadelphia Spectrum. Someone else who may have to watch their back going forward is the #1 contender to the WWF Intercontinental Championship - Junkyard Dog. Slated to face off for the title at Saturday Night's Main Event, JYD looks to challenge Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine in just three weeks time. Valentine, as you may recall, put JYD's friend and the previous Intercontinental Champion - Tito Santana - on the sidelines with a broken leg. If he's not careful, the Junkyard Dog just may find himself out of action as well. And now, our guest at this time, the WWF Intercontinental Champion - Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine.

McMahon: Welcome to the program, Mr. Valentine. This week you find yourself in action in this week's Wrestling Challenge main event in tag team action as you partner with George 'The Animal' Steele against Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka and Junkyard Dog. I suppose this will squash rumors that you've been purposefully avoiding the #1 contender to your WWF Intercontinental Championship, wouldn't it?
Valentine: Now let's get something straight here, McMahon. 'Avoiding' implies there's any sort of cowardice on my part. I am the WWF Intercontinental Champion, and I welcome all challengers. Junkyard Dog? He's beneath me. He's not worthy to shine my boots, let alone challenge for this title. So, let's get that straight.
McMahon: I'm just reporting public opinion.
Valentine: What you're reporting is nothing but conjecture and hearsay - probably planted by that rat Tito Santana himself. But, that'd be giving Santana too much credit. After all, he's just as big of a moron as Junkyard Dog. Junkyard Dog! You think I'm dodging you? Well, this Saturday, you'll get your shot at me. We'll see who the coward is, punk!

Hulk, at the end of last week's Wrestling Challenge you were the victim of a two-on-one attack by The Heenan Family's Big John Studd and Paul Orndorff with Andre the Giant coming to the rescue. Since then,
Hogan: Well let me tell you something, Mean Gene. Bobby Heenan and his Family think they've got something for Hulkamania and Andre the Giant they've got another thing coming, brother. Paul Orndorff wants to step forward and challenge for the WWF Championship? Well, it's on. But, I've got one question for you, 'Mr. Wonderful', whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania and the largest arms in the world run wild on y-

Just as Hogan was to wrap up his promo, Hillbilly Jim - somewhat timidly, a feat given his stature - walked into screen.

Jim: Er, excuse me, Mr. Hogan. I'm really sorry to interrupt you, but, I've been looking for you for the past week or so.
Okerlund: It's Hillbilly Jim. I hate to be rude, sir, but we are currently in the middle of an interview.
Jim: I know, and I apologize for that Mr. Okerlund. But, Mr. Hogan, I've been trying to reach you over the past week and I really need your help on something.
Hogan: Jim! Go ahead, brother, ask away!
Jim: Well, you see, last week I faced off against Brutus Beefcake and I felt I just had that match slip away. I know you've helped me before when I just started out here in the World Wrestling Federation, but, I think I got caught by surprise last week. I guess I'm flailing around the point like a catfish outta water a bit, but, would you be able to train me some more? I know I can beat Beefcake, I just need some extra help.
Hogan: Jim, you're right, brother. You can beat Brutus Beefcake and you wanna know something, brother? You want the Hulkster's help? You got it!

McMahon: Always pays to have friends, doesn't it?
Ventura: What's he going to suggest? Say his prayers and eat his vitamins? I can only hope Hogan's not charging the poor lump.

Jimmy Snuka vs. David Schultz

Snuka overall was able to hold control over Dr. D through the entirety of the match, but Schultz's bursts of offense were able to plant a seed of doubt in everyone's mind at times. Superfly's overall experience paid off though as he was able to put his opponent away with a Superfly Splash just before the 8-minute mark.

JYD: Mean Gene, 'The Hammer' better be running scared because the Junkyard Dog is gunning for him. Greg Valentine's been dodging me for the past several weeks because he knows he's got something coming to him for his attack on Tito Santana. He knows he's got something coming to him for being a cowardly champion. Spell it out Valentine - J. Y. D. - that's your mis-e-ry.
Okerlund: And with you is Tito Santana himself. Tito, it's great to see you standing on your own two feet again - although you're not quite in the clear yet for in-ring action, is that right?
Santana: Gene, it's really great to be back in the World Wrestling Federation - although the fact that I won't be able to wrestle for everyone at least for another few weeks does get on my nerves. I've been rehabbing this leg of mine as best as I can because even if Junkyard Dog here wins the Intercontinental Championship from Greg Valentine at Saturday Night's Main Event - I'm still coming for you, Valentine. I know the Junkyard Dog very well, and I know he's got what it takes to beat you in Philadelphia.

A match that had a decent amount of solid technical wrestling at the beginning of it. Orndorff's brute strength was the tipping point in this one as he began to throw Brisco around with ease. All Heenan had to do on the outside was gloat as it soon became evident that his client was bringing home the victory in this one.

Following the match, Heenan enters the ring with a microphone and stands next to Orndorff. Big John Studd and Ken Patera both come down and make their way into the ring, Patera's match being up next.

Heenan: Look at the power there of Paul Orndorff. Hulk Hogan thinks he can fight off 'Mr. Wonderful' and retain his WWF Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night's Main Event? He's got another thing coming! Now what's that big oaf Andre the Giant think he's going to do against Big John Studd in our $15,000 Bodyslam Challenge when he can't even get past our boy Ken Patera here in just a few minutes?

Andre the Giant vs. Ken Patera w/Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and Big John Studd

Patera wasn't one to shy away from the stature of Andre as he walked right up to the giant and tried striking away, but Andre would return fire with several strikes of his own. Patera held an early strategy of pushing the giant towards the ropes as Studd would make his presence known in the match by swiping at one of the leg's of Andre, distracting him. Patera would try to capitalize with a roll up, but Andre quickly countered with a butt drop instead that nearly got the pinfall.

The Heenan Family on the outside kept calling to Patera to change up the strategy from time to time as Andre kept finding ways to thwart their offense. Heenan's last ditch effort was to jump up onto the apron and shout some abuse towards Andre. The distraction prompted Andre to charge over and try taking a swipe at Heenan, but a spooked Heenan (although he'd likely tell you otherwise), lost his balance and fell into the arms of Big John Studd. Lighting Patera up with a few more punches, Andre delivered a thundering Bodyslam before making the pin to close the show.

Andre the Giant defeated Ken Patera in 9:16 by pinfall with a Bodyslam.

Ventura: Well, McMahon, we all know all of those people out there turning on their television sets are here to listen to my expertise.
McMahon: I'm sure they are. Vince McMahon here with Jesse 'The Body' Ventura and Gorilla Monsoon ready to call a night's worth of action for you. Highlights tonight include an absolutely star-studded main event between Big John Studd and Paul Orndorff taking on Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka and the WWF Heavyweight Champion, Hulk Hogan!
Ventura: I know you're high on 'The Hulkster', McMahon, but he's got another thing coming if he thinks he can beat Bobby Heenan's boys.
Monsoon: Always a downer, this guy.
McMahon: Also on the card tonight will be the current #1 contender to the WWF Intercontinental Championship, Junkyard Dog, as well as an appearance by 'The Hot Rod' Roddy Piper!
Ventura: Always must see television with Piper. Rumor has it he has a target on The Hulkster's back, so we'll see if he calls his shot tonight. Here's hoping he does, it's about time we've had a new face at the top of the pile.
Monsoon: You know we are supposed to have a sense of impartiality here as commentators right? Where this anti-Hogan kick has come from I have no idea.
McMahon: I'll leave you two at it to continue that conversation, but we head to the ring now for our opening contest!

Hillbilly Jim vs. Brutus Beefcake (w/Luscious Johnny V)

Beefcake was able to deliver a beat down on the still new Hillbilly Jim in the early minutes of the match but Jim was able to feed off of the energy of the crowd and start to manhandle Beefcake by throwing him around the ring. Johnny V on the apron proved to be quite the distraction, getting the ref's attention on many a occasion or by tripping up Jim when he got close to the ropes. The final turning point of the match came when one such distraction by the manager allowed his client to hit a low blow with the ref's back turned... prompting Beefcake to connect with a High Knee for the victory.

**POST-MATCH**

Beefcake immediately went right back to laying in the boots on the downed Jim following the conclusion of their match. Valiant slid into the ring himself and assisted his client with the continued beatdown. Refs and ringside attendants were able to eventually pry the two men off of the downed rookie, but not before Beefcake delivered a sick insult of spitting on his opponent before heading to the back with his manager.

McMahon: A despicable act by Brutus Beefcake and Luscious Johnny V. Despicable!
Monsoon: Nothing short of disgusting by that youngster. Truly appalling.
Ventura: Come on now. You heard what Beefcake said on Tuesday Night Titans... and he was right! Hillbilly Jim has no place being in the World Wrestling Federation, good on Beefcake and Johnny treating him like the piece of trash he is!
McMahon: Piece of trash? These fans love him!
Ventura: Well, you know my thoughts on these folks...
McMahon: To the backstage area now, we've got 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper!

Roddy Piper appears on his own in the backstage area in front of a backdrop with a WWF logo on it. He clearly has something to say following his heinous attack on Cyndi Lauper and Captain Lou Albano at Madison Square Garden just a week prior.

Piper: Y'know there Hulkster, you've been having a good run of things as of late. World championship belt, movie star - although Stallone did rough you up a good amount, eh? - and you're all over MTV. The world is your oyster, Hulkster. But, you're getting complacent. Ah, yes, you're getting complacent there Hogan. Cyndi Lauper didn't see it coming at the Garden just a week ago, Captain Lou didn't see it coming and you didn't either - me setting up that whole award ceremony for her success. You see Hogan, you think you're the only big fish in this tiny pond, but I make the headlines because The Hot Rod is the headlines. Watch yourself, Hulkster.

JYD went on the attack from the start of the match as he threw Lombardi around with ease. Lombardi was able to get some offense in by way of several strikes to the abdomen, but Junkyard Dog was able to see the strikes off and continue throwing his opponent around the ring before hitting him with a Powerslam for the win.

Gene Okerlund gets in the ring after the match, microphone in hand, clearly on the way to interview the victor of the match.

Okerlund: A thoroughly convincing victory for the Junkyard Dog tonight in Chestnut Hill. While you may have just won here tonight, surely your thoughts must be elsewhere given everything that's going on with your friend, Tito Santana?
JYD: Mean Gene, I tell you, tonight's win is especially dedicated to Tito Santana. Tito, the Junkyard Dog hopes you're resting up at home... and I swear to you! I swear to you I will get revenge for what Greg Valentine did to you when he put you on the sidelines. I promise you I will get revenge for you and I will take the WWF Intercontinental Championship away from his dastardly hands.
Okerlund: And do you have any direct message against the Intercontinental Champion?
JYD: Greg Valentine, when you come after the Junkyard Dog's friends, you come after the Junkyard Dog himself. Saturday Night's Main Event. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'm coming for you.

Monsoon: He does indeed. One of the strongest athletes in the World Wrestling Federation has a target on your back? You better be worried. If I were Greg Valentine, I'd be worried about the trouble coming to him at Saturday Night's Main Event.
Ventura: Oh, please, would the two of you calm down? Greg Valentine is the WWF Intercontinental Champion because he's damn good at what he does. Oh, boo hoo, Tito Santana's out with a bum leg. He's weak, McMahon. He's weak, Gorilla. He couldn't cut it. The Intercontinental Championship had no place being around his waist.

Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Snuka vs. Big John Studd and Paul Orndorff (w/Bobby Heenan)

Solid even match with all your classic 'face' vs. 'heel' tropes in it. Heenan directed orders from the outside for both of his Family members to direct all of their focus on Hogan and beat the WWF Heavyweight Champion down to the mat. This provided a bit of an oversight, however, as Snuka would even the odds against both Studd and Orndorff. An attempted Superfly Splash by Snuka onto Orndorff was thwarted by Heenan, who jumped up on the apron and distracted the high flyer. Distracted, Snuka climbed down from the turnbuckle and attempted to throw Heenan from the apron, but Studd would run interference and clobber Snuka over the head with a foreign object not seen by the referee.

Hogan pleaded with the ref for a disqualification from the apron, but his pleas went unheard. Heenan's taunts then turned to the Hulkster as Hogan tried his best to not get distracted by the opposing manager, but something must've got to his ego as he found himself heading to the outside mats and chasing Heenan around the ring. Turning a corner, Hogan was laid out with the same foreign object by Studd as Orndorff got Snuka up for a Piledriver in the ring and drove his head to the mat for the win.

**POST-MATCH**

Studd and Orndorff continued their beatdown of Hogan after the bell with both men stomping on the WWF Heavyweight Champion outside of the ring as Studd grabbed the foreign object - revealed to be a chain - and prepared to choke the champ out with it. Snuka quickly came running in for the save as he was able to temporarily dispatch Studd, but a clothesline to the back of the head from Orndorff knocked Snuka out. With both members of the face team down and out, Studd retrieved the chain again and prepared to choke Hogan out until...

...

Andre the Giant made his way from the backstage area towards the Heenan Family. At the mere sight of the giant hastily making his way towards them, both Studd and Orndorff immediately split from the area with Heenan just escaping from the giant's clutches as well.

McMahon: Andre the Giant with the save!
Ventura: What's he doing out here!? He has no business being out here!
Monsoon: Nonsense! The Heenan Family were out here to snuff Hulk Hogan out! Not on Andre's watch!
McMahon: Ladies and gentlemen, we're out of time... but I'm sure we're to expect the fallout from tonight's assault very very soon!

Also, that is one weak women's division. I remember the first thing I would always do when firing up the 1987 mod was scrap the women's division and fire all of the midget wrestlers (PC police please do not come after me for using that term, that was what they were called back then).

Yeah, that was one of the first things I noticed as well - the existing women's division only has four wrestlers! Those numbers will be boosted over the coming in-game weeks.

McMahon: Thank you very much and welcome to the first edition of Tuesday Night Titans of the new year 1985! I'm Vince McMahon and joined as always by my co-host, Lord Alfred Hayes. Lord Alfred, how's the new year been treating you so far?
Lord Alfred: Fine, very fine, Vince. Was a happy Christmas, a happy new year thus far, and to keep up with the jovial atmosphere, I understand you have a special announcement to make?
McMahon: Yes, indeed, Lord Alfred. Before we invite our first guest of the evening onto the show, the World Wrestling Federation would like to officially announce that our weekly flagship television program, WWF Championship Wrestling is to receive a new name going forward... with our one-hour program now being called 'WWF Wrestling Challenge.'
Lord Alfred: ...that's it, that's the major announcement? You changed the name of the television program?
McMahon: Well, if you excuse me, Lord Alfred... you didn't let me finish. Before the World Wrestling Federation returns to Madison Square Garden in March, we have a major card that we would like to announce the night before Valentine's Day. The WWF is proud to announce a signing with the USA Network to present quarterly Saturday night programming entitled 'Saturday Night's Main Event.' Now then, now that our announcements are out of the way, let's bring out our first guests. Our first guest of the evening is a young upstart wrestler who's been slowly making his way up through the WWF ranks... please welcome Brutus Beefcake and his manager, Luscious Johnny V!

McMahon: Brutus, Johnny, welcome to the program. Now, Brutus you find yourself in action in the opening match of this upcoming episode of WWF Wrestling Challenge against another wrestler who's been making his way up in the World Wrestling Federation, Hillbilly Jim. What are your thoughts heading into the match?
Beefcake: Hillbilly Jim? That slob. Hulk Hogan picks out some fan from the crowd and you give him a full-time job - are you that strapped for talent, McMahon? Jim, I don't know if you can watch this in your backwoods hovel you call home... but you're in my way. Slowly getting chiseled more and more away with the various regional territories falling to the wayside due to the juggernaut of the World Wrestling Federation running wild nationwide. While the rest of the Americas have been left reeling by the quick expansion of the WWF, they have one hope left up their sleeve, that Vince McMahon Jr's latest big idea falls flat on its face. McMahon has been hyping up this major event in March at the Garden as the next step in national domination... something he calls Wrestlemania. What a dumb name... I mean, it's no Starrcade. But, hey, good luck to you with it, Vinny.

So, been having trouble getting my AJPW save/databases from 1983 exported over to the new game, so I'm thinking of starting up a new dynasty with a 1985 start date. Thinking of either going with the WWF in the run up to Wrestlemania or sticking with puro and doing a NJPW save.

Summer Action Series Mid-Tour Press Conference

Quick press conference is held at HQ with AJPW officials on hand to discuss just a few matters. First, they confirm that Harley Race vs. Genichiro Tenryu for the PWF World Heavyweight Championship is on for the tour finale at the Budokan as Race, despite not accepting the challenge on television, has informed them he is more than willing to have Tenryu as his next challenger.
The second bit of news is that the NWA International Tag Team Championships will be on the line at the next television taping. The NWA had given the title shot to an up and coming tag team from Texas, Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy, but Hayes unfortunately will not be able to make it to Japan due to a medical issue. Thus, Giant Baba and Jumbo Tsuruta's first title defence will be against Stan Hansen and Terry Gordy.

Summer Action Series Mid-Tour Press Conference

Stan Hansen is clearly in a mood after having his second match in a year called by Kyohei Wada rather than him submitting. At the sign of the first question from a reporter, the NWA International Heavyweight Champion grabs his bullrope and immediately charges the journalist - running him off.
Jumbo Tsuruta, on behalf of himself and his tag team partner, says it's great to show once again that they're the top tag unit in All Japan Pro Wrestling, but it's time for him to turn his attention to the Budokan and one of the biggest matches of his career. He assures the press group in attendance that Tsuruta vs. Hansen in an NWA title unification match is sure to be a classic of a match and he hopes to be speaking to the press in attendance at the Budokan as the victor at the conclusion of it.
Harley Race keeps his remarks brief as he says that should teach that little bastard Onita to dare get as mischievous in the future. Now it's time for him to turn his attention towards his next challenger.
Atsushi Onita's clearly still in pain from his match as he's continuously icing his back. The youngster says he knows his time is coming soon. One day he'll get Race and get that PWF World Heavyweight Championship... one day.
Genichiro Tenryu thanks Yoshiaki Yatsu for a tough match as he hypes his opponent up as a worthy opponent. But, on the other hand, he does put out a warning in a way to the rest of the locker room that if they decide to get as ballsy as Yatsu did in the weeks leading up to tonight, you're going to unleash the same fire you saw out of Tenryu tonight.

News of the World - June 1983

AJPW: Stan Hansen signed to a long-term exclusive contract with the company after a lengthy bidding war with the World Wrestling Federation. Hansen is said to be a key figure of AJPW's long-term booking plans. Signing to the company on a pay-per-appearance deal is MLW's Haku - who will be working under the name 'King Tonga.' Also signing to touring contracts are WCCW's Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy.

GCW: Stan Hansen and Mr. Wrestling have both left GCW.
GCW: The NWA National Tag Team Championships have been vacated.

CMLL: Rayo de Jalisco Sr. and Dr. Wagner won the Mexican National Tag Team Championships.

WWF: A quick jump up to Cult size was quickly halted as they just as quickly fell back to Regional. Signing exclusive contracts with the company were Tully Blanchard, Roddy Piper, Adrian Adonis, Paul Orndorff and Blackjack Mulligan.
WWF: Tony Garea won the WWF Intercontinental Championship from Pat Patterson.

MACW: Jos Leduc and Terry Funk let their contracts expire as neither are known for staying with companies for very long stints. Sgt. Slaughter, however, re-signed to a pay-per-appearance deal. Ric Flair was also made the figurehead of the company - replacing Roddy Piper in quick fashion.
MACW: Dick Slater and Dick Murdoch won the vacant Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championships. Slater and Leduc previously held them before Leduc's contract expired.

WCCW: The Spoiler and Rip Oliver signed to pay-per-appearance contracts while King Kong Bundy's contract expired.
WCCW: Buzz Sawyer won the NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship from David von Erich.

AWA: Greg Valentine signed on a pay-per-appearance deal while Jerry Blackwell extended his pay-per-appearance contract.

That's a killer main event; it fits perfectly with the theme of 80s AJPW. Baba and Tsuruta winning the belts is neat, although Baba can probably barely move. Perks of having Jumbo as a partner right?

While Baba is definitely starting to slow down (he is 45 after all), he surprisingly can still somewhat go in the ring. Tsuruta's the star of that team performance-wise, but Baba still stands as a convincing half of that unit.

Genichiro Tenryu vs. Yoshiaki Yatsu

The rivalry from the past few weeks spilled over in this one with the match spilling out to the outside on occasion - and it remained just as brutal on the inside of the ring as well. A true test of resilience between both competitors that stayed even in the first half, but Tenryu's pure internal fire (or feelings of vengeance rather) pulled away in the second half. Three leaping kicks to the back of Yatsu's head followed by a Powerbomb with a good degree of snap to it pulled the victory out for the former sumo standout.

Match No. 5

'PWF World Heavyweight Championship'

60-minute time limit

Race got the action underway before the match even started as he charged Onita before the ring introductions - surely payback for his insolence of stealing his title belt. Despite Onita's early attempts to escape away, the American was able to keep him grounded in the center of the ring as he tried to utterly decimate the young dojo graduate's knees. Onita had a lifeline thrown his way with each rope break as he'd play chicken with the ropes on occasion and force Kyohei Wada to give some separation between the two men.

The match memorably made its way to the outside in a move that allowed Onita to grab the advantage. Throwing the PWF World Heavyweight Champion into the various ringside objects wasn't enough for the young Onita as he nearly found himself disqualified by wrapping a television cable around Race's throat. Feeling he dealt a sufficient amount of damage, Onita returned the match to the ring as he started to pick apart the champion limb by limb - clearly causing Race to favor a knee after the fact.

Down the road, Onita aimed to finish the match off with a release Thunder Fire Powerbomb into the corner padding, but Race would find ways each time to power out of the move. The one time Onita was able to get the champion on his shoulders resulted in a memorable reversal as Race rolled backwards into a rana that sent Onita crashing headfirst into the corner pad. Sensing his opportunity to strike, Race went up top and connected with a Diving Headbutt before following up with a vicious Piledriver for a successful title defense against the brash youngster.

Match No. 6

'NWA International Tag Team Championships'

60-minute time limit

Baba and Tsuruta - the latter specifically - were the epitome of focus as they were quite effective at picking apart the two Funk brothers in the early stages of the match. The experience of the sibling champions, however, allowed them to escape on occasion and get a series of tags off to each other to stay fresh. Eventually they were able to turn the tables and isolate Tsuruta from Baba as they paid particular attention towards the aging knees of Giant Baba.

Tsuruta's attempts to interfere on his partner's behalf were cut off by Kyohei Wada more often than not - allowing the champions to get in some cheaper shots with the referee's back turned. After enduring enough damage, Baba was able to eventually power his way out of being beaten down in the corner to bring the match back to even as both sides were back to full strength and able to get tags off freely.

As Baba and Dory Jr. were squaring off inside the ring as the legal men, Terry and Tsuruta were fighting on the outside and on the apron as Tsuruta looked to put the younger Funk brother out of commission by calling back to a previous singles match of theirs by trying to Backdrop Suplex him onto the apron. Not falling to that move in their most recent singles match, Terry drilled the challenger with an elbow to the face as he then threw Tsuruta to the apron and entered the ring. Terry started taking the fight to Baba as the brothers started delivering tag team move after tag team move. Perhaps getting a bit too overzealous at times, Terry went for a Piledriver on Baba on multiple occasions, but the giant was able to fend off both brothers and go back on the attack.

Baba dropped Terry with a Big Boot at a point as Tsuruta was able to quickly enter the ring and throw Terry back to the outside. From here, the match returned to being Baba versus Dory Jr. as the champion kept trying to trip up Baba and slap on a Texas Cloverleaf - but Baba was having none of it. An irish whip and a missed Big Boot attempt led to a chop block on the giant as Dory Jr. finally slapped on his patented Cloverleaf. The challenger just refused to submit to the hold and after several moments of agony was able to power his way out of the hold. One overhead chop connected after another from Baba as a Big Boot put the Funk down as Baba and Tsuruta once again found themselves holders of the NWA International Tag Team Championships.

In a bout that had sensational wrestling and fantastic heat, Giant Baba and Jumbo Tsuruta defeated The Funk Brothers in 37:06 when Giant Baba defeated Dory Funk Jr. by pinfall with a Big Boot.

Main Event

'NWA World Heavyweight Championship'

Flair received a strongly favorable response from the 8,000+ in attendance - something that clearly irked Hansen as he charged from across the ring and immediately grounded the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Not usually one to employ the ground game, Hansen utilized his technical skills as best as he could in the early stages of the match as Flair surprisingly had some struggles escaping from Hansen's holds. Once free, Flair tried to return the favor on his challenger but it quickly became clear Hansen had done his homework as he was able to find counter after counter for Flair's moves.

The NWA World Heavyweight Champion's decision to engage in a standing striking battle didn't work to his advantage as Hansen was able to shrug off a series of backhand chops before delivering a headbutt. An early attempt at a Lariat however went ducked by Flair as the champ then was able to ground Hansen for a longer period of time - working on the arms specifically. Hansen's strength was able to carry him away easier to the ropes, but Flair would resort to tactics such as using his foot to push a rope further away to inflict as much damage as possible.

It was clear Flair's grounded technical assault had worked as Hansen was favoring his arm a little bit. An irish whip by Flair backfired as Hansen would counter with a running shoulder tackle as he then took time to recover in the corner, clearly inspecting his arm to make sure it was in proper working order. Each time the world champion would try getting to his feet, Hansen would re-ground him with blows across the back and put Flair down for a longer amount of time with a gutbuster. Once he gathered enough stamina to get back to his feet, Hansen followed up with a series of knee lifts before dropping the champion with a back suplex for a two-count.

Hansen attempted to follow up with a few further suplexes, but Flair surprised the NWA International Heavyweight Champion with a small package rollup that nearly got the fall. An enraged Hansen quickly got to his feet and unloaded with a Lariat attempt that Flair just ducked as he rolled Hansen up again for another near fall. This time around, Hansen faked a Lariat attempt as he instead dropped the champion with a sit-out slam instead. Hansen got those in attendance to get on their feet as he pulled his elbow guard off as he signaled for a Lariat - one that should connect and get the job done this time.

As Hansen charged out of the corner, Flair countered with a drop toe hold that dazed Hansen by sending him crashing into the opposite side's corner pad. Flair immediately locked on a Figure-Four Leg Lock that left Hansen screaming in agony. The Texas refused to submit though as grueling second after grueling second passed by. Each time Hansen sat up to get some leverage to power his way to a rope, Flair unloaded with chops to the chest to keep Hansen in place. A full minute passed as Hansen continued to refuse to tap out. With not enough progress made in him getting to a rope or countering the hold, Kyohei Wada called for the bell as Hansen tried hobbling to his feet to apprehend the ref and continue the match... but it was too late.

In an exceptional match, Ric Flair defeated Stan Hansen in 36:34 by referee stoppage.

Naito is defending both belts against Evil at Power Struggle

Fourth time in as many months? Gross.

Yes, World Tag League's back this year. Combo tour with Best of the Super Juniors.

Only tour besides that is the Power Struggle tour. If I had to guess, Naito will defend the title(s) against SANADA and Ibushi will defend the G1 briefcase against Jay White at the tour finale.

SANADA's going to be a star, but I don't think he's at that point yet to headline the Dome. I still think they should put the NEVER belt on him or split up the HW and IC belts and give him an IC title run to at least prep him for a run with the big belt. I still think he'd be a more believable champion than EVIL. I couldn't get behind his brief run/current push at all.

Naito vs. Ibushi is still a big-name matchup that is sure to put on a great match. I'm intrigued to see how they're going to pull off the two-night Wrestle Kingdom this time around with the belts still being on one guy though.
