    Pre-Event Press Conference

    <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:green;border-style:solid;border-width:5px";">

    • Harley Race says Terry Funk has been an old rival of his going all the way back to their battles across the central United States in the 70s and, given that, is prepared for whatever his title challenger throws his way. He knows his gameplan inside and out and will pick him apart for another successful title challenge.
    • Terry Funk merely responds by saying Race hasn't seen everything in his arsenal just yet. Japan's been a whole new ballgame for him.
    • Stan Hansen again states that Fuchi's victory over him in the Champion Carnival was a fluke and that he'll 'whip his ass' all over the newly-constructed Osaka-jo Hall at the Super Power Series finale. From there, it'll be time to take on the best and the baddest wrestlers the world has to offer.
    • Masanobu Fuchi's time at the microphone is spent digging in the knife a little bit deeper on Hansen. Fuchi says that no matter what, the record will permanently show he bested Hansen. He goes on to state that he did it once, and he'll do it again and show to everyone that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
    • Genichiro Tenryu is puzzled as to what Atsushi Onita's deal has been as of late, but if he wants a fight, he's going to be in for one in Osaka. Tenryu is asked if beating Onita, who may be next in line for a shot at the PWF World Heavyweight Championship as he beat Harley Race in the Champion Carnival, will help improve his stock in the title rankings and he says it surely will. He says to keep in mind, however, that he was at one point in the year already #1 contender for the championship and he should already be considered to be up there in the rankings already.
    • Atsushi Onita doesn't give the press much as he mostly just shrugs off questions with a smirk.

Once Dory Jr. finally was able to get the tag off, Fuchi charged the ring and started lighting up Hansen with a barrage of strikes, but a headbutt from the NWA International Heavyweight Champion brought the match back in his favor.</em></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"><em> </em></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"><em> Terry was soon able to take over from his teammates as he started to wear down the NWA International Heavyweight champ. Several moments passed before the two men locked up as a spirited grappling battle ensued with neither man able to get an advantage over the other. Race was soon able to lock in several ground-based submissions on his title challenger that began to take Funk's strength away - prompting the younger Funk brother to tag out to his older brother.</em></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"><em> </em></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"><em> Race endured some of the punishment that Dory Jr. dished out, but he was soon able to fight his way back onto offense as he eventually put the older Funk brother away with a Piledriver before the 25-minute mark.</em></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>RATING: </strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#008080;"><strong>81</strong></span></span></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p> </div></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>_____________________________________________</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="46953" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>BHK1978: 4/6</strong><p><strong> joshbrady91: 4/6</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="BHK1978" data-cite="BHK1978" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="46953" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p> I really don't get Chavo classic in this diary. He's certainly a valuable asset of the roster in-game as his match performances are outstanding and he can really go toe-to-toe with anybody. I'm really thankful he's not a freelancer in this save as I think I can get a lot of use out of him before he physically starts to go. (He's already mid-30s in-save.)</p>

The move provided an opening to the challengers, however, as they started exchanging quick tags to keep their side fresh and to use as much double-team offense as they could. Super Power Series Pre-Tour Press Conference

    <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:green;border-style:solid;border-width:5px";">

    • The winner of the Champion Carnival and the new NWA International Heavyweight Champion, Stan Hansen, mocked the press in attendance saying that he told everybody Baba's era at the top of All Japan Pro Wrestling was coming to an end and that he guaranteed victory. Now that he's the premier champion in All Japan, he figures it's now his time to name a challenger for his newly-won title. He immediately has someone in mind... "Fuchi! You pissant! You and that crooked ref think you've got one over Stan Hansen, do you? Well, consider yourself to be the first in line to get a shot at this here belt. The Ric Flairs, Dusty Rhodes, Tsurutas and Tenryus of the world can wait. You're going to pay, pissant. You're going to pay!"
    • PWF World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race comes to the podium and recaps his Champion Carnival effort, stating that it looks like he's going to have his hands full of title challenges in the coming weeks. He singles out Terry Funk and says that it's clear he's made his intentions known that he intends to be the first in line. Race says that he welcomes the challenge and that he'll see him at the end of the tour one-on-one for the championship.
    • AJPW officials announce that the next challengers for the AJPW All-Asia Tag Team Championships will be Mitsuharu Misawa and Kodo Fuyuki. Their opportunity to end Akio Sato and Takashi Ishikawa's nearly two-year long reign as champions will take place at the tour's final night.

    News of the World - March/April 1983

    Puroresu News

    All Japan Pro Wrestling

    • Kevin von Erich and David von Erich, who both were signed to touring contracts for the spring/summer season for All Japan Pro Wrestling, were released early from their contracts following their challenge for the NWA International Tag Team Championships. This stemmed from David's habitual drug use backstage that really soured the backstage mood.
    • Rocky Hata's contract expired at the end of the Excite Series tour. Given his status as a freelancer, he elected to not re-up his deal with the company.

    New Japan Pro Wrestling

    • Leaving New Japan were Yoshiaki Yatsu, Killer Khan and Dick Murdoch. All Japan is reportedly interested in the services of Yatsu and may send a contract offer over either before the conclusion of their summer tour or for their autumn/winter tour.
    • After a brief back and forth negotiating contest, New Japan bested offers from All Japan Pro Wrestling to formally extend the contract of IWGP Heavyweight Champion Riki Choshu. All Japan's bid for Choshu's services was stated as being "not too serious" as the company feels confident enough in their roster to compete against New Japan.
    • After a flurry of title changes at the start of the year, the only title change to take place in the past three months is with the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship with Black Tiger (Marc Rocco) picking up the title from Tiger Mask.

    Rest of the World News

    Georgia Championship Wrestling

    • GCW made some significant roster acquisitions with Afa, Adrian Adonis, Ken Patera, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and Dutch Mantell
    • The only title change during this time were the NWA National Tag Team Championships being won off Mr. Wrestling II and Brett Sawyer by Adrian Adonis and Super Destroyer.

    Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre

    • In a surprise move, Mil Mascaras let his contract expire with CMLL, making him a free agent worldwide. He is currently not employed by any company.
    • Alfonso Dantes became a six-time NWA World Light Heavyweight Champion by defeating El Faraon this past week.

    Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling

    • MACW has made a plethora of signings to exclusive contracts with Tito Santana, Dick Murdoch, Jesse Ventura, Carlos Colon, Pedro Morales, Rick Martel, Kamala, Big John Studd, Stan Lane, Buddy Rose, Magnum TA, Austin Idol and Dino Bravo among those to sign. The company's push to become the top territory in the United States certainly comes with a bit of a hefty price tag with all of these acquisitions.
    • Don Muraco and Dino Bravo won the first ever Crockett Cup by defeating Paul Jones and Skip Jones in the final.

    American Wrestling Association

    • Re-signing with the AWA were Bobby Duncum Sr. and Jim Brunzell as inking a new pay-per-appearance deal with the company was Ricky Steamboat.
    • Buck Zumhofe won the AWA World Light Heavyweight title from Nacho Berrera.

    World Class Championship Wrestling

    • In some rather surprising news, Fritz von Erich and booker Gary Hart have reportedly been pushing Junkyard Dog as the company's new figurehead over David von Erich. We're not quite sure what prompted the decision, but it's interesting nevertheless with Fritz potentially losing faith in one of his sons to draw.
    • The WCCW World Six-Man Tag Team Championships finally changed hands with The Freebirds losing the belts to Kerry von Erich, Kevin von Erich and Jim Duggan.

    World Wrestling Federation

    • Rocky Johnson and Curt Hennig extended their non-exclusive contract with the company as a variety of workers left the company, including Tito Santana, Mil Mascaras, Butcher Vachon and Tiger Conway Jr.
    • With Pedro Morales leaving for Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, a match for the vacant WWF Intercontinental Championship was held with Pat Patterson earning his second reign with the strap by defeating Eddie Gilbert in a singles match.

    Press Conference

    P7X3431.jpg?1eiPb7Zl.jpg?1

Several days removed from the final nights of round-robin block action in the Champion Carnival, a press conference was called between the two men set to fight it out for both this year's edition of the tournament and the NWA International Heavyweight Championship - Giant Baba and Stan Hansen.

    • Stan Hansen stated that his attack on Baba at the conclusion of Night 14 of the Champion Carnival was to send a statement that Baba needs to watch his back at all times. Hansen makes the claim that he is the most dangerous wrestler that Baba will have ever stepped in the ring with. Hansen says Baba's era of All Japan Pro Wrestling is over and it's soon to be the age of the Lariat in the land of the rising sun.

    • Giant Baba merely scoffed at Hansen's assertion that his time at the top of All Japan is over. Baba says he's faced strong opponents prior to Hansen and he'll continue to face strong or even stronger opponents after Hansen. He doesn't put the Texan down though as he does say that he is a worthy victor of A Block and he will prove to be a worthy opponent at the Champion Carnival Final. The press in attendance then posed questions regarding Hansen's post-match attack on Baba following his block-clinching victory over Genichiro Tenryu. Baba said if he was looking to soften him up prior to their impending match, he did a really poor job of getting it done. He'll be in fighting shape at the tournament finale... and he says Hansen better be as well because he's in for a battle.

An even match throughout its duration, Funk and Misawa came close to locking in/landing their respective finishing moves throughout the match. Funk had too many close calls with ducking Misawa's running forearm, but a quick roll up led to a surprise victory for the NWA International Tag Team champion... much to Misawa's dismay.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Kodo Fuyuki [8] defeated Umanosuke Ueda [6] in 11:07 by pinfall with a Fuyuki Special II.

Fuyuki held control of the match from the ringing of the opening bell, but Ueda was able to grab control after a quick rake to the face. An attempt at a superplex by Ueda was thwarted by his younger opponent as he would be shoved away and taken down with a flying shoulder tackle. Fuyuki was quickly able to follow up with a Fuyuki Special II for the win.

In an exceptional match, Giant Baba [13] defeated Genichiro Tenryu [11] in 25:13 by pinfall after two Big Boots.

Like the final match of A Block, both Baba and Tenryu had a counter for whatever the other threw at them in this one. Tenryu focused on wearing out Baba's knees, while Baba focused on keeping Tenryu grounded throughout the match by dropping him with a variety of heavy-handed strikes.

Tenryu tried multiple times to Powerbomb Baba to no avail, but did nearly clinch the block with a Spinebuster. Baba was dazed and confused on his feet after taking the heavy impact, but managed to counter a follow up by Tenryu with a standing Big Boot. One cover later and Tenryu just managed to get his shoulder up. Tenryu didn't come back from a knee injury and a lost PWF World Heavyweight Championship shot only to lose this match, after all. Unfortunately for him, Baba was able to follow up with a second Big Boot that put Tenryu down and clinched the block for the giant.

    **POST-MATCH**

Baba waits for Tenryu to get to his feet and helps his opponent steady himself as he has some issue re-gaining his balance. The two exchanged a handshake as Tenryu, visibly disappointed, headed to the back. With the ring to himself, Baba celebrated in each corner of the ring as the 2,500+ in attendance rose to their feet for a rousing ovation for the B Block victor. Whoever just jumped the railing, however, had a different plan...

    eiPb7Zl.jpg?1

It's A Block winner Stan Hansen! With his back to Hansen, Baba was unable to see the intruder as he suddenly was blasted across the back with a cowbell. Hansen stood over Baba's downed body as he then dragged his Champion Carnival final opponent to his feet by the arm. A rebound off the ropes later and Hansen floored Baba with a Lariat. Hansen raised his cowbell and threw the horns in the air as the show came to a close.

Fuchi kept Race on his toes throughout the match and was successful on multiple occasions on keeping the PWF World Heavyweight Champion grounded to the mat. With this, Race realized he'd have to switch up his strategy if he was to defeat the younger, more agile opponent, he'd have to turn this match into more of a standing contest. Kabuki nearly caught Funk by a surprise just before the 10-minute mark as he nearly rolled the American up in a small package, but Funk was just able to kick out of the predicament. His momentary lapse of concentration was corrected after that as he quickly strung together a series of moves and capped off his attack with a Piledriver to eliminate Jumbo Tsuruta from block contention. In an exceptional match, Stan Hansen [10] drew with Jumbo Tsuruta [9] in 30:00 when the time limit expired.

Tsuruta appeared visibly discouraged that he wasn't going to be eligible to go for the Champion Carnival title and the NWA International Heavyweight Championship in a week with Funk's victory, but he still gave Hansen his all in his match. Both men went toe-to-toe and mirrored each other's offense throughout the entirety of the match. When the match stayed as a standing fight of throwing forearms at each other, neither man budged. When the match managed to make its way to the ground and become a slower technical affair, neither man was able to gain an advantage either.

Tsuruta set himself up for a Backdrop Suplex out of the corner on Hansen, but was a bit over eager in his setup as Hansen instead dropped him with a surprise Lariat. Tsuruta brought those in attendance to their feet though as he just managed to kick out of the following pin. Hansen tried following up from there, but left himself open to finally take a Backdrop Suplex. The crowd popped once more when Hansen also just got a shoulder up before Kyohei Wada counted three. With the minutes ticking down, both men threw everything they had at each other in hopes of giving this match a decisive finish. With seconds left, Hansen just escaped another Backdrop Suplex attempt and dropped Tsuruta with another Lariat, but was too exhausted to attempt a pin as the timekeeper signaled the 30-minute mark was reached.

    **POST-MATCH**

Following the conclusion of the match, Hansen stumbled to his feet as he raised an arm while propping himself up in the corner. By outlasting Tsuruta to a draw, he is officially the winner of A Block. He receives a mixed reaction from the Korakuen crowd, but he's not too bothered. To him, who cares what they think? He's going on to fight for a championship!

The five competitors still eligible to win the Champion Carnival and the NWA International Heavyweight Championship were made available for a press conference ahead of the final night of block action. Representing the A Block were Stan Hansen, Jumbo Tsuruta and Terry Funk. Representing the B Block were Genichiro Tenryu and Giant Baba.

    • Stan Hansen merely calls himself the most dominant force in All Japan Pro Wrestling in the present day and says that Tsuruta will have nothing for him in what could be their block deciding matchup.
    • Jumbo Tsuruta says it has been his goal to be the man to unite both NWA singles championships in All Japan Pro Wrestling since the start of the year and the opportunity is staring right at him over the course of his next two events. He says getting the win over Hansen to win the block and move onto the final will be nothing short of sweet because of Hansen's closeness to "that quitter" Bruiser Brody.
    • Terry Funk says he proved to everybody that he's deserving to be champion in All Japan Pro Wrestling. Already a tag team champion with his brother Dory Jr., Funk says his wins over Tsuruta and Harley Race in block matchups show to the world that his time at the top of the mountain is coming.
    • Genichiro Tenryu says his Champion Carnival effort this year is to make a statement that he is still a deserving singles title challenger. Umanosuke Ueda was nothing but a road block and a pest. With Ueda now out of the way, Tenryu's attention has evolved past the PWF World Heavyweight Championship race as he says he's ready to become the NWA International Heavyweight Champion for the first time in his career.
    • Giant Baba, the six-time tournament winner, says he knows what it takes to win this tournament and that you simply can't underestimate any single person in this tournament. He wishes Tenryu luck ahead of their matchup, but affirms that he's not done yet and he's got another singles title run still in him.

    Block Clinch Scenarios

    'A Block'

    • Stan Hansen will win A Block if he either wins or draws in his match against Jumbo Tsuruta.
    • Jumbo Tsuruta will win A Block if he both defeats Stan Hansen in their upcoming match and if Terry Funk does not win his match.
    • Terry Funk will win A Block if he wins his upcoming match against The Great Kabuki and if Jumbo Tsuruta wins in his upcoming match.

    'B Block'

    • The match between Genichiro Tenryu and Giant Baba determines the fate of B Block with the winner of the match being declared the winner of the block. If the match goes 30 minutes without a decisive victor, AJPW/PWF officials have announced the match will get a time extension to provide a decisive winner.

Tenryu came close on several occasions to landing a Powerbomb, but Misawa was able to escape on each occasion - even delivering a rana to the outside that brought the Kobe crowd to its feet. In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Kodo Fuyuki [4] defeated Tiger Jeet Singh [0] in 12:05 by pinfall with a Fuyuki Special II.

Singh stayed point-less following this contest that Fuyuki maintained control of throughout.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Ashura Hara [2] defeated Dory Funk Jr. [4] in 15:49 by submission after blatantly cheating.

Wada's eyes weren't as observant as they were on Night 9 as Hara got away with using the ropes for leverage for a pin on Funk. Funk was in thorough control of the match though, yet was struggling to get a Texas Cloverleaf locked in on Hara.

In an exceptional match, Genichiro Tenryu [10] defeated Umanosuke Ueda [6] in 16:24 by pinfall with two Powerbombs in a row.

Tenryu made sure Ueda paid for the trouble he caused him over the last few months in this first one-on-one matchup between the two of them since Tenryu's injury. Ueda was able to get some offense early, but Tenryu was able to string together several high-angle slams before putting the blond-haired villain down with not just one, but two vicious Powerbombs. With the loss to Tenryu, Ueda found himself eliminated from B Block contention.

    **POST-MATCH**

Tenryu continued his assault on Ueda and ultimately had to be separated by several ringside attendants and several dojo students from the back. Tenyu finally relented from pursuing further attacks on the downed Ueda as he then headed to the back.

In an exceptional match, Giant Baba [9] drew with Mitsuharu Misawa [5] in 30:00 when the time limit expired.

With Tenryu's victory, Misawa needed a victory over Baba to make sure his tournament hopes stayed alive, however, Baba's stature proved to be quite the obstacle for the young Misawa. Misawa was able to get in a lot of offense against Baba - not that Baba didn't as well - but Baba's height advantage on Misawa prevented the youngster from being able to get a finishing move done, despite grounding him several times.

    **POST-MATCH**

After the match and after both men returned to their feet, Baba offered Misawa a handshake that was quickly accepted. Despite not being picked up by the ringside microphones, Baba was seen speaking into Misawa's ear with the youngster nodding at whatever the veteran was saying. After a pat on the shoulder from Baba, Misawa left the ring as Baba thanked the 2,000 in the venue for attending.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, The Great Kabuki [2] defeated Atsushi Onita [4] in 13:59 by disqualification.

Onita headed into this week's opening match with a head of steam with two consecutive victories. With some unethical tactics being utilized in both of those matchups, why wouldn't he try the same thing against Kabuki? Unfortunately for Onita, Kyohei Wada wised up to Onita's antics this time around and caught the dojo grad blasting Kabuki across the forehead with a chain and called for the disqualification. Onita was bewildered at the call and pleaded his innocence to Wada, despite the assault being as clear as day.

In a match with fantastic heat and great wrestling, Jumbo Tsuruta [7] drew with Harley Race [6] in 30:00 when the time limit expired.

Both of the singles champions in the promotion squared off in a great bout that showcased the best of both competitors. Notable was the fact that neither man was able to hit their respective finishing move on the other as both always found a way to escape from their respective opponent. Tsuruta opted for a more straightforward striking/grappling attack while Race's tactics led to him taking the match to the ground with some technical-style wrestling. With the draw, the landscape of the A Block in this year's Champion Carnival is looking extremely tight with two nights of round-robin competition left for the block.

Booking/posting the Champion Carnival is fun, but, man, do I want to get back to the standard four TV tapings and a big event schedule.

Decent show, I was pretty far off with my predictions haha.

Just when they think they know the answers, I change the questions! ...or something like that, anyways.
