  1. Just held Wrestle Kingdom 3 (2009) in what started as a NJPW 2005 save...

IWGP Heavyweight: Brock Lesnar (3rd reign) def. Masahiro Chono to retain at WK3, beat Shinsuke Nakamura to win at KoPW 2008.

IWGP Intercontinental: Kazuchika Okada (1) def. Hiroshi Tanahashi at WK3, Tanahashi was first champion of title dating to mid-2008.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight: Minoru Tanaka (7) def. CIMA at WK3 to retain, won from KENTA at Dominion 2008 after winning BoSJ.

IWGP Tag Team: Sylvester Terkay & D'Lo Brown (3) def. WTL winners Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Katsuyori Shibata to retain. Was going to give Tenzan/Shibata the belts, but I lost a bidding war to NOAH for Shibata. So, gaijins retain.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team: Koji Kanemoto & Magnum TOKYO (1) def. The Briscoes, Tiger Mask IV & Ultimo Dragon, Gedo & Jado in a 4-way at WK3. Belts prior to this were being hot potatoed between Briscoes and Gedo/Jado in a feud that's been putting on great matches.

IWGP U-30 Openweight: Naomichi Marufuji (1) def. KENTA at WK3, probably use the belt to elevate his overness a little and then put him in a program for the Jr Heavyweight Title.

    --------

What's next? Trying to figure out who beats Lesnar for the championship. Chono I figured was too old for another run with the belt, and I put him in the main event at the Dome just to keep the old man happy because he's been a grump otherwise. Nakamura and Tanahashi's two chances with the belt that I've booked for them they've both crapped the bed ratings-wise (Tana much more suited for IC belt.) Shibata's jumping ship and Okada's not over enough yet to challenge for it despite him being one of my top workers already at the age of 21. Nagata, Tenzan, Fujita? Old.

  2. Am I correct in understanding that NJPW has faces/heels? How does G1 work, if it's a round robin (face/face, heel/heel)?

Loosely, because even Tanahashi played the heel in a recent New Japan Cup match against Juice Robinson (last year I want to say?) Only genuine heel stables are Bullet Club and Suzuki-Gun to a slightly lesser extent . It's so competition-based feel-wise over there though that you won't see any Fingerpoke of Doom type antics between factions. Everyone has something to prove.

  3. Chris Hero vs Chris Jericho

Strange match with stranger teammates for each competitor in this match with Race and Guerrero feuding over the PWF World Heavyweight Championship recently and with there being some tension between Onita and Fuchi. Both sides were ultimately able to put their differences aside in this spirited contest, but Race was able to see off the threat of Fuchi thoroughly with a piledriver.

After the match, Onita charged Race after the bell and laid in a series of stomps across the torso of the PWF World Heavyweight Champion. With Race's championship belt knocked away after its holder was floored, Onita walked over, glanced at the silver belt and then picked it up - admiring it. Looking back at Race, Onita slung the championship belt over his shoulder and then smugly made his way to the back.

Race eventually got back up to his feet as he searched around for where the PWF World Heavyweight Championship went. Joe Higuchi, the ref for the freshly-ended tag match, informed him Onita took it for his own - prompting Race to dart out of the ring and quickly make his way to the back.

This star-studded main event was the perfect cap to the go-home show for the first Summer Action Series major show. The team of Tsuruta and Baba kept their focus on The Funk Brothers while Tenryu looked to settle his score against Yatsu. The match stayed even throughout with each individual having a chance to shine in the match. Perhaps a special 60-minute time limit was needed for this one as by the time the 30-minute mark rolled around, no winner had been reached.

A buzz grows amongst the crowd as Genichiro Tenryu silently makes his way to the ring from the back in casual attire. He climbs onto the apron as Yatsu finishes getting his arm raised by Joe Higuchi. Yatsu turns to Tenryu and seemingly welcomes him into the ring. Tenryu requests a microphone from a ringside worker and has his request granted, wasting no time to talk...

Tenryu: Yoshiaki Yatsu, welcome to All Japan Pro Wrestling. Congratulations on your debut victory - certainly a big moment in a new venue for you - but, it wasn't your first statement. Last week, you felt the need to make your presence known in All Japan by jumping me after a match of mine, and I simply want an explanati-

Yatsu yanks the microphone out of Tenryu's hand mid-sentence as he ponders what he's to say for a few moments before raising the microphone to his mouth.

Yatsu: Tenryu, I've faced the best in the world in amateur wrestling championships across Asia and across the world... and I've also faced the best in the world in New Japan Pro Wrestling. I wanted a change of scenery and I figured the best way to make my mark known in All Japan was to find the toughest of the tough and make my mission statement clear. But, evidently last week wasn't clear enough for you.

With that, Yatsu drops Tenryu by clobbering him over the head with the microphone before quickly locking in a Jailhouse Lock that he keeps locked on for several seconds before viciously dropping the hold and heading to the back. Ringside attendants assist Tenryu back to his feet as the crowd showers boos on Yatsu.

Funk dominated the early stages of the match as he utilized much of the outside area in his arsenal - throwing the champion into the ringpost or into the various barriers on the outside. Tsuruta was able to get his revenge on the outside eventually and soon was able to return the favor by taking Funk for a tour of the outside area. Once in the ring, Tsuruta continued his revenge on Funk, holding control of the match for several minutes before he was caught and spiked into the ground with a DDT for a near fall. The challenger then focused his efforts on the champion's ribs and back, trying to submit him on several occasions with a surfboard, grounded abdominal stretch and a body scissors.

A rope break brought things back to even as Tsuruta fired back with chops and high knees. In a throwback to their match from New Year Giant Series, Tsuruta attempted to hit a Backdrop Suplex on the ring apron, but Funk refused to go down to the move for the second time in a year as he countered with a shock DDT onto the apron. Thinking Tsuruta must've surely been out cold, he rolled the NWA United National Champion in the ring and tried a pin that was just kicked out of. The challenger was never quite able to fully connect with a Piledriver for the win as he eventually unloaded with a barrage of punches and forearms to the champion out of frustration. Tsuruta was able to shove Funk away off the ropes as he caught him off the rebound and tried connecting with a Backdrop Suplex, but was caught with an elbow to the face instead. Funk tried capitalizing and nearly was able to lift Tsuruta for a Piledriver, but the champion just managed to reverse out of the hold and pull off a surprise Backdrop Suplex for the successful title defense in what was a grueling battle of a match.

In an exceptional match, Jumbo Tsuruta defeated Terry Funk in 36:51 by pinfall with a Backdrop Suplex.

**Jumbo Tsuruta makes defence number 33 of his NWA United National title.**

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Umanosuke Ueda, Mighty Inoue and Goro Tsurumi defeated Mitsuharu Misawa, Kodo Fuyuki and Mitsuo Momota in 12:12 when Mighty Inoue defeated Mitsuo Momota by submission after blatantly cheating.

The AJPW All-Asia Tag Team Champions were in control of the match early on, however, a cheap shot by Ueda midway through the match allowed the duo of Inoue and Tsurumi to capitalize and grab the momentum of the match. Ueda would help keep the tag champions away as Inoue and Tsurumi picked apart the at times defenseless Momota. A roll-up with the tights pulled on Momota by Inoue secured the victory for their side as Inoue and Tsurumi signaled to the champs afterwards that they're coming for their championships.

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Genichiro Tenryu defeated Magic Dragon in 7:05 by pinfall with a Northern Lights Bomb.

The masked wrestler was only able to muster a few strikes in this bout as Tenryu was in control throughout the matchup. Dragon was able to make a few resilient and bold kickouts of several high-powered slams that wowed the crowd at times... even though everyone pretty much saw the writing on the wall.

    **POST-MATCH**

Tenryu has his arm raised by Kyohei Wada as he waves to the capacity crowd in attendance; non-verbally thanking the crowd for their support of himself as the fans continue showering the former sumo standout with applause. Their reaction quickly changes, however, as a new face emerges from the back...

    gFVW74S.jpg?1

It's Yoshiaki Yatsu! He was rumored to be joining All Japan Pro Wrestling after leaving New Japan several weeks ago, yet with no appearance after a month of his leaving, some started to give the thought up.

Yatsu made his way into the ring as he stood feet away from the victorious Tenryu. Neither man said a word to the other as Tenryu was trying to assess what Yatsu's intentions were. Several moments passed as Yatsu then quickly charged Tenryu by surprise and flattened him with a quick lariat. Yatsu looked down at Tenryu with a blank expression on his face as he then made his way to the back to the boos of the Tokyo crowd.

In an exceptional match, Stan Hansen and Harley Race defeated Masanobu Fuchi and The Great Kabuki in 12:38 when Stan Hansen defeated The Great Kabuki by pinfall with a Western Lariat.

Fuchi took the fight to Hansen early on and elected to face off against the NWA International Heavyweight Champion whenever he was in the ring. As valiant as Fuchi's efforts were, Hansen would purposefully frustrate the man he successfully defended the title against at Super Power Series as he'd find a tag to Race whenever he could. Eventually, each individual's 'marked man' got switched up as Hansen squared off against Kabuki and put him away with a Lariat after the halfway mark.

In an exceptional match, Ashura Hara and The Funk Brothers defeated Giant Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta and Motoshi Okuma in 23:25 when Terry Funk defeated Motoshi Okuma by pinfall with a Piledriver.

Okuma elected to start off the match against Hara as the two bruisers threw heavy strike after heavy strike at each other in the early stages of the match. Eventually, Tsuruta and Dory Funk Jr. made their way into the match as the legal men with Tsuruta prevailing momentarily in a ground-based submission matchup. Funk's expertise quickly reversed his fortunes as he turned the tides of their ground battle in his favor before tagging out to his younger brother, Terry. Once he stepped through the ropes, Terry stomped on Tsuruta's back as his older brother kept him tied up in a leglock before taking over. Tsuruta tried on multiple attempts to get to Baba for a tag, but Terry kept pulling him away from his corner. Eventually, Tsuruta was able to surprise the younger Funk brother with a high knee before getting the tag off to Baba.

Baba's plan of attack was to keep Terry grounded and he would continuously do so by throwing overhead chop after overhead chop and knees at Terry. The failure to evolve past that strategy quickly enough proved to be a downfall for the giant as Terry managed to catch a leg of Baba's and force him to the mat with an amateur takedown. Terry slapped on a kneebar on the legend as he converted to a modified cloverleaf for the attempted submission, but, unfortunately, he couldn't get the job done. The Funk Brothers and Hara then proceeded to cycle each other in as the legal man to keep their side fresh as Baba struggled at times to get to his corner. Eventually, a tag was made to Tsuruta who quickly evened the odds against all three men. Tsuruta's energy could only hold out for so long as he had to make a tag out to Okuma. Okuma was able to keep up the momentum for a finite amount of time before the Funks and Hara began to pick him apart. Terry did most of the work towards the end of the match, planting Okuma with a Piledriver as Dory Jr. and Hara kept the former NWA International Tag Team Champions at bay.

    **POST-MATCH**

Following the match, Terry Funk berated the ringside attendants and demanded one to immediately bring him a microphone. After checking to make sure the power was activated to the device, the younger Funk brother began to speak.

Funk: Tsuruta! I hope you didn't forget about me! While your focus has been on Stan Hansen and claiming yet another championship, you shouldn't have let your focus slip from me! I beat you in the Champion Carnival and I proved that I deserve another shot at the NWA United National Championship. We're not going to wait until Aichi. I want my shot next week!

Tsuruta re-entered the ring and stood across from Funk as he quickly raised his NWA United National Championship over his head - signifying the challenge has been accepted!

Summer Action Series Mid-Tour Press Conference

    <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:5px";">

    • Stan Hansen confirmed that he accepted Jumbo Tsuruta's challenge at the conclusion of the opening night of Summer Action Series. He's infuriated over Tsuruta's mentioning of his friend, Bruiser Brody, and 'dragging his name through the mud.' Hansen says Tsuruta will pay for his insolence next month, but, in the meantime he has an opportunity that has fallen into his lap for this month's big show in Aichi. PWF officials on hand cut in after Hansen's proclamation and said contracts are still being finalized, but they'll have a major announcement for the Aichi show following the next TV taping.
    • Genichiro Tenryu is still somewhat despondent over his loss to Atsushi Onita at Super Power Series, but says he's not going to get too down on himself. He knows his chance is coming and that he still believe he deserves a shot at the PWF World Heavyweight Championship considering he was robbed earlier in the year of his title shot. He says to keep his stock up, he's going to need to find himself a convincing opponent and best them in Aichi to position himself to reclaim his sport as top contender... hopefully in time for the Budokan show next month.

Trying to keep his side in it, Funk tagged out to recuperate as the two NWA singles champions in All Japan squared off against each other. Funk received a tag as he continued his assault on Baba's knees in what became a theme of the giant desperately needing to get to a rope for a break. Baba eventually fought his way to his feet as he dropped the veteran with a backdrop before getting a hot tag off to Tsuruta. In a decent match, Ashura Hara, Goro Tsurumi and Tarzan Goto defeated Apollo Suguwara, Shinji Sasazaki and Toshiaki Kawada in 8:03 when Goro Tsurumi defeated Toshiaki Kawada by submission with a Scorpion Death Lock.

Each side was able to get in a decent amount of offense, however, Hara and Goto's chemistry allowed them to pull away and tip the scales of the match in their side's favor. It was Tsurumi, however, that would get the job done for their side.

In a good match, Shiro Koshinaka, George Takano and Mighty Inoue defeated Chavo Guerrero, The Great Kabuki and Kazuo Yamazaki in 11:22 when Shiro Koshinaka defeated Kazuo Yamazaki by pinfall with a Powerbomb.

The smaller members of the roster were given a showcase match early on the card as, like the opener, each competitor was able to get in plenty of offense in this one. Koshinaka's side made sure to isolate Guerrero from his corner, which left the luchador disposed of for much of the second half of the match, allowing Koshinaka to keep Kabuki at bay before planting Yamazaki with a Powerbomb.

Slow start to the match as both sides tried to wear each other down on the mat, but Fuyuki's heavy-handed offense got underway quickly with a variety of slams being utilized against the champions. Sato and Ishikawa's expertise however allowed them to ground Fuyuki some more, but Misawa's presence in the match allowed him to break up their early attempts at a submission with ease.

After the 10-minute mark, the champions started running into trouble as a fresh Misawa started to take the fight to his opponents. A dropkick to both Sato and Ishikawa sent both crashing to the outside as Misawa then followed up without a dive to the outside that dropped both men. Quick to capitalize, Misawa rolled Sato into the ring and locked in a cloverleaf to try and earn the submission. He didn't account for Ishikawa having a quick recovery as he entered the ring and blasted the challenger with a running forearm to the back of the head. Fuyuki was quick to run interference as he hit a belly-to-belly suplex on Ishikawa then rolled him out of the ring as Misawa quickly regained his balance and blasted Sato with a Running Forearm to earn both his and Fuyuki's first-ever title reign in All Japan.

In a bout that had superb wrestling and good heat, Mitsuharu Misawa and Kodo Fuyuki defeated Akio Sato and Takashi Ishikawa in 14:52 when Mitsuharu Misawa defeated Akio Sato by pinfall.

Jumping Baba and Okuma before the bell, Ueda and Singh separated Baba from his partner as they dropped the giant and started hammering away at Okuma's knees with kicks and chop blocks. Kyohei Wada finally got order and started the match as Ueda established himself as the starting man. Ueda continued the assault on Okuma on the ground as he used the ropes at times to gain extra pull with various submissions as well as ignoring rope breaks on occasion. Baba, now recovered and standing on the apron, pleaded with Wada to keep a tighter leash on Ueda, but Wada waved off his protests.

Singh was tagged in as he continued where his partner left off as he picked away at Okuma on the ground. After withstanding plenty of punishment on the ground, Okuma started to fight his way back to his feet and hip-tossed Singh before trying to get a hot tag off. Okuma was just stopped by Singh lunging for his leg as he locked in a single-leg grapevine and continued to hold the former sumo regular in place. Moments of agony for Okuma passed before he was able to kick Singh away as he freed himself and went for another lunge to tag to Baba, but he was caught by his opponent yet again... but this time Okuma delivered another hip toss as he finally got the tag off to Baba.

Baba entered the ring to the roar of the crowd as he immediately started taking the fight to Singh. Ueda entered the ring to even the odds as he was met with an overhead chop that stunned the blond-haired heel. Baba continued to work through his arsenal on Singh as Ueda found a second wind and attacked the giant from behind, however, Okuma ran into the ring and threw Ueda through the ropes and followed him to the outside. As Okuma and Ueda started to brawl around the outside area, Baba set Singh up for his finishing move as he planted him with a Big Boot for the win.

Each competitor circled each other for awhile before locking up in the center of the ring with Tsuruta gaining the advantage. Tsuruta tried wearing down the Mid-South Wrestling regular with a standing side headlock for awhile, but Reed was able to shove the NWA United National Champion off the ropes and deliver an arm drag - leading to Reed to pose and taunt the champ. Reed then quickly started to wear Tsuruta down with a standing side headlock of his own. Tsuruta tried to shove the challenger away, but Reed's sheer strength kept the hold locked in. Out of desperation somewhat, Tsuruta attempted a quick Backdrop Suplex, causing Reed to break the hold to escape the attempt as the match returned to even.

Another standard lockup in the center of the ring led to Reed again grabbing the advantage as Tsuruta would soon try powering out of the hold with some shots to the back of the challenger. Reed's immense upper body strength would prove to be a tough challenge for the champion to power out of as Tsuruta appeared to nearly fade at times... but another shove away by the champion led to a shoulder tackle that even appeared to take Reed by surprise. Tsuruta quickly seized the opportunity to work over Reed as he tried slowing down the American with several ground-based holds.

Reed's pure strength allowed him to get back to his feet again as he delivered clubbing shots to Tsuruta's back. A bit of separation allowed Reed to snap off a quick headbutt as he charged off the ropes for a running clothesline, but he was met with a quick jumping knee from Tsuruta! The champion tried following up with a Backdrop Suplex, but a rear elbow from Reed gave the challenger the opportunity to hit a short-arm clothesline for the near fall. A follow up attempt at a Running Powerslam was thwarted by another high knee as this time Tsuruta was able to follow up with a Backdrop Suplex for a successful title defense.

In a bout that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Jumbo Tsuruta defeated Butch Reed in 14:19 by pinfall with a Backdrop Suplex.

    Genichiro Tenryu vs. Atsushi Onita

    5YyYtkd.png

    GSIlvuE.jpg?1zVxLaoQ.png3QMiRBT.jpg?1

Onita found himself being overpowered consistently with each try at a lockup between both sides. Tenryu's grappling expertise led to him dragging his opponent to the mat consistently as Onita struggled to break free of his attacker. Eventually, Onita became wiser towards Tenryu's attacks as he started to jump away from Tenryu's lunges at wrestling him to the floor again. At times it appeared that the younger wrestler was taunting the former sumo standout, sometimes mocking him from the corner. Tenryu soon made Onita pay for his insolence as he would grab a waistlock and throw Onita to the ground to continue working away on the ground.

Onita was able to free himself with the help of several rope breaks, but Tenryu was relentless in grabbing a hold of his opponent and wrestling him to the mat again and again. After another job at freeing himself, Onita retreated to the outside and made sure to keep his distance from Tenryu - returning to the ring only to answer Kyohei Wada's count. One such attempt to avoid a countout backfired on Onita as he was caught with a side suplex from Tenryu that left the AJPW dojo grad dazed. An attempt at a follow up with a second suplex, led to Onita slipping away and shoving Tenryu into Wada before retreating to the outside once more. As Tenryu tried chasing Onita to the outside after checking on Wada, he was met with a shot to the head with a kendo stick from the outside.

The crowd showered Onita with boos as he seized his opportunity by taking the time to start choking the life out of Tenryu from a grounded position as Wada started to recover. Tenryu appeared to be in trouble as Onita worked a modified armbar on the former sumo standout that nearly got a submission on occasion. Realizing he wasn't going to get a result by way of the ground attack, Onita broke the hold and stomped away at Tenryu as the larger man started getting to his feet. Onita worked through his arsenal efficiently and was able to take Tenryu by surprise with just how diverse his attacks were. A set up for a Thunder Fire Powerbomb was thwarted by Tenryu though as he was just able to power out of the attempt, but a strong forearm from Onita allowed him to get Tenryu up on his shoulders for the attempt... but Tenryu manages to deliver a headscissors to outside the ring!

The fight carries to the outside area as Tenryu throws Onita into various ringside objects. An attempt at a Powerbomb on the outside was thwarted by the youngster with a poke to the eye once he was on Tenryu's shoulders... leading Onita to counter with a neckbreaker on the outside mats. Quickly scrambling to the inside, Onita tried drawing a countout, but Tenryu just managed to get in the ring in time. Onita threw a barrage of strikes Tenryu's way to get him off of his balance, but would have one punch caught by Tenryu as he would receive a punch instead that sent him flying back across the ring. A DDT from Tenryu set up a Powerbomb attempt nicely as he was able to lift Onita up for the move, but this time Onita threw several punches while in the air - allowing enough of a break in momentum to allow him to slip off Tenryu's shoulders and roll him up...

Stan Hansen © vs. Masanobu Fuchi

The opening lockup didn't last for long as Hansen proceeded to throw his smaller opponent around the ring - making sure to shout abuse towards him once he'd slowly get back up to his feet. Fuchi would try different approaches to getting a hold on the NWA International Heavyweight Champion, but Hansen would respond by throwing him back down each successive time. With that, Fuchi started staying distant and tried to draw Hansen towards him - a gambit that proved to work out as a drop toe hold into the ropes provided Fuchi the opportunity he needed to try working over Hansen's legs.

Keeping the champion in the center of the ring for a minute with a kneebar, Hansen's brute strength allowed him to slowly crawl his way to a rope and achieve a break. Fuchi, realizing that he may not get too many opportunities on the ground to subdue the champion, used as many of the five seconds Kyohei Wada allowed him to break the hold to inflict as much damage as he could. Once the champion got to his feet, Fuchi did a wrestling shoot-in to take his legs out once again, but several clubbing blows to the back from Hansen broke that possibility up. Hansen instead dumped Fuchi over the top rope and immediately worked on pummeling him outside of the ring.

Realizing he was going to have trouble on the outside, Fuchi tried running away from his opponent leading him on a chase outside of the ring. A quick detour inside and through the ring led to Fuchi ending up behind Hansen as he caught the American in a standing armlock - wrapping the champion's arm around a ring post for extra torque. Wada was furious at Fuchi's action and called for a break with Fuchi again using nearly all of the five seconds Wada gave him to inflict as much damage as he could to the limb. Downing Hansen with a chop block on the outside, Fuchi slid into the ring and tried getting a countout, but Hansen was able to get in the ring well before the 20-count. Fuchi was quick to continue an attack as he pounced on Hansen mid-slide into the ring. The smaller wrestler tried multiple times to get his signature Joint Torture Hold locked in, but Hansen was able to power out still - bum arm and all.

Fuchi attempted a dragon screw leg whip, but an elbow to the top of the head from Hansen broke that up as the NWA International Heavyweight Champion followed up with a headbutt. Fuchi's attempts to get back to his feet were continuously met with headbutt after headbutt that brought him back down to a knee. A DDT connected from Hansen as he then pulled his right sleeve off with a grimace - still smarting from the ring post-assisted submission - as he called for his finishing move. Once Fuchi stirred to a standing position, Hansen charged for a Lariat, but was evaded by the challenger as Fuchi dropped him with a Joint Torture Hold! Hansen scrambled around for an escape route, but each rope minds as well have been a marathon away! Surely he wasn't going to lose to this move twice!?

Agonizing moment after agonizing moment passed as Wada seemed to ready to pull the trigger and call the match right then and there (to which Hansen exclaimed "Don't you dare you son of a b*tch!") Summoning all of his strength, Hansen forced his way to a side as he just managed to get a foot on the ropes. Fuchi couldn't believe he was forced to relinquish the hold as he knew he wasn't going to get many more opportunities to get that done again. Once both men were standing, Fuchi unloaded with strike after strike trying to drop Hansen to a knee once again, but the American refused to go down. Hansen started to follow up with headbutts and forearms of his own - a back and forth exchange that soon led to Hansen getting the advantage by dropping Fuchi to a knee. Hansen was quick to plant Fuchi with a second DDT as he signaled once again for a Lariat... this time connecting with the move. The NWA International Heavyweight Champion signaled he was far from done as he continued to berate the downed Fuchi for (as the ringside mics picked up, "For embarrassing him") as he picked up the smaller wrestler once again and downed him with a second Lariat for the fall.

In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, Stan Hansen defeated Masanobu Fuchi in 25:03 by pinfall with two Western Lariats.

Harley Race © vs. Terry Funk

    gfXBKLm.jpg?1

    yFkChgH.png

    DtLrT7j.jpg?12yqTPMD.pngZZHzfkU.jpg?1

The opening minutes of the match were spent showing off the technical abilities of both men as both tried various standing holds and submissions trying to get the other to the mat, but neither man was able to fully drop the other. This cycle carried on for awhile in the opening stages as Race nor Funk just could get a handle of their opponent. It wasn't until a surprise forearm to the bridge of the nose by Funk left Race reeling as the younger of the two Funk brothers backed Race into a corner and started hammering away with punches, strikes and forearms. Race could reverse and throw Funk into the corner for only a few moments as Funk would reverse right back and continue his striking assault.

A swinging punch by Race was ducked by Funk as the challenger seized the opportunity to lock in a standing sleeper hold as he tried choking the life out of the champion for an early victory. Race was able to quickly grab a rope to break the hold as he fired back with a series of knife edge chops to his challenger. Not one to back down from a straight up brawl, Funk responded with a series of knife edge chops of his own before both men got in each others' faces. This was a new Terry Funk to Race in a way, a more vicious, confrontational, brutal Funk. Clearly, Funk's warning to Race during the pre-event press conference that he had tricks up his sleeve that Race had never seen before were indeed true.

Back to a technical battle the match went as Race was finally able to transfer from a hammerlock to taking Funk down to the mat. The PWF World Heavyweight Champion worked over his challenger's shoulder for as long as he could in an attempt to neutralize his weapons for any sort of future attacks. Funk found a counter after a time and was able to get a rope break to bring both men to their feet. The challenger found a way to back the champion into a corner once again as he unleashed with another vicious series of knife edge chops and then went so far to actually bite the eyebrow of Race! Kyohei Wada immediately broke up Funk's attack as Race shoved his opponent away and projected a spitball right at his opponent's face, connecting with it. This sent Funk into a fury as he shoved Wada to the side and charged Race as the fight quickly spilled to the outside.

The two men continued to trade blows on the outside as Race tried to hit a high knee, but his attempt was blocked as he was whipped into the ring post by Funk. As Wada was still getting to his feet, Funk proceeded to choke Race out of the ref's sight with two hands until Wada managed to stumble over and order Funk off of the champion or risk a disqualification. Funk reluctantly broke the hold as he picked up Race and rammed him into a guardrail, continuing to do so before whipping him into the ring post again. Funk rolled inside the ring to recover as Race just managed to beat a 20-count.

Race took some more clubbing blows as he got to his feet, but a blocked punch led to the champion countering with several knees to the gut before finally connecting with a running high knee to his challenger. A fisherman's suplex didn't quite get the win for the champion as he attempted to follow up with a Piledriver. Race couldn't manage to fully get Funk up for the maneuver as instead Funk reversed with a backdrop before following up with a series of knee drops to the forehead. Funk took time to admire the damage inflicted as he took a look at the corner of the ring. Funk then slowly began to scale the turnbuckle as he looked at Race down below - still down in the ring. With a smirk, Funk leapt off the top turnbuckle for a Diving Headbutt attempt of his own, but Race just managed to roll out of the way in time!

Race stumbled to his feet ahead of Funk as he snapped off a DDT on his challenger before applying a Funk-patented spinning toe hold of his own! Funk was in pure agony on the ground but he refused to tap out to his own hold. Race broke the hold as he then picked Funk up for a Piledriver to finally put an end to this one, but Funk was managing to keep kicking his legs to halt the momentum required to lift him up for the hold. Funk was able to break away momentarily from Race as he slapped the champion one last time before receiving a stiff forearm across the forehead as punishment. One more heave up for a Piledriver from Race and Funk's head was planted into the mat for the loss.

In an exceptional match, Harley Race defeated Terry Funk in 31:47 by pinfall with a Piledriver.

    **POST MATCH**

During the post-match ceremonies of Race being presented his PWF World Heavyweight Championship once again, a figure was making his way towards the ring with a chair in hand from the backstage area...

    3QMiRBT.jpg?1

It's Atsushi Onita! Victorious in his match against Genichiro Tenryu earlier in the night, Onita was all smiles as he set up his folding chair in the ring and took a seat behind Race. Once the champion turned around to spot the young, brash dojo graduate, Onita started to applaud the champion as he then rose to his feet and offered a handshake to the main event's victor. Confused at first over Onita's gesture, Race accepts Onita's offer as Onita continues to just smirk at the champion.

Onita then breaks the handshake as he grabs his chair, folds it up and stares at the PWF World Heavyweight Champion (and belt) for several moments before heading to the back.
