WWF Championship Wrestling Sunday, Week 1, May 1983 Radio City Music Hall New York City, New York Attendance: 5,000 Vince McMahon Ladies and gentlemen, it is with a heavy heart that we begin this episode of WWF Championship Wrestling announcing that WWF superstar Jimmy Superfly Snuka was found passed away within his hotel room last week by his manager Captain Lou Albano. We give our sympathies to his family. He will be missed. And right now I would like to have a moment of silence for his memory. *MOMENT OF SILENCE* Gorilla Monsoon Jimmy Snuka was a great athlete here, Vince. And tonight we are dedicating this episode of WWF Championship Wrestling to the memory of Jimmy Snuka. And as I am sure he would want it, the show must go on. Vince McMahon Indeed, Gorilla. And what a show we have for you tonight, including a blockbuster main event as the WWF World Heavyweight Title is defended by Bob Backlund against the WWF Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco in a special 10 minute time limit match. Gorilla Monsoon That should make for a great main event, Vince! We're also going to see The Wild Samoans in action and even Andre the Giant! Vince McMahon But first it is time for the debut in-ring of the team of Ivan Koloff and the Iron Sheik! ------ vs. Ivan Koloff and The Iron Sheik vs. The Strongbows The Strongbows definitely had the crowd behind them within this match as they take on the two hated foreign nationals. But Koloff and Sheik had Colonel Ninotchka outside. The Colonel got involved briefly during the match as a distraction for Chief Jay Strongbow. This enabled Ivan Koloff to get Chief Jay up in that Inverted Backbreaker to get the submission victory. Winners: Ivan Koloff and The Iron Sheik Match Time: 2:57 Match Rating: C- Following the match, Ivan Koloff kept the inverted backbreaker on Jay Strongbow. Jules came in to make the save but he was tossed out over the top rope by the Iron Sheik. Koloff finally released Jay and he raised hands with the Iron Sheik and Colonel Ninotchka in the middle of the ring to boos from the crowd and chants of 'U.S.A., U.S.A.!' ------ A pre-taped recording is played showing Pedro Morales standing in front of a generic background. Pedro Morales Don Muraco, we've done all the talking that we're going to do. You call yourself the Magnificent One? Well, you've got a belt that I want to get back. We can fight all we want outside the ring but when it comes down to it, what really matters is what goes on between those ropes. So why don't you face me in a match and we'll truly see who the better man is. ------ vs. Samula vs. Pedro Morales Vince and Gorilla talked about the challenge Pedro made to Don Muraco during this match against Samula. Pedro dominated as one might expect him to do against the samoan. He ended the match quickly with the Knee Drop Backbreaker and then pinfall. Winner: Pedro Morales Match Time: 1:51 Match Rating: C ------ A video begins to play showing what happened last week between Andre the Giant and Big John Studd. With Andre accepting the Body Slam Challenge, only to be attacked by Studd. ------ vs. The Masked Superstar vs. Andre the Giant The Masked Superstar was accompanied to the ring by the Grand Wizard while the Giant came out with his anger. The Masked Superstar took an early lead against the rampaging giant, dodging some hits and putting in some hits of his own! The crowd was a little surprised by this but soon Andre put it into gear and began his own domination of the Masked Superstar with body slams and headbutts in particular. As Andre got him set up for the Butt Drop, in came Big John Studd, attacking Andre from behind and causing the DQ! Winner: Andre the Giant Match Time: 3:08 Match Rating: B Andre fought off Studd and even the Masked Superstar in the ring as the Grand Wizard pulled them away from the action and Andre picked up a microphone. Andre the Giant Big John Studd! You think you're so tough? Step into the ring with Andre and Andre will prove who the better giant is. Because nobody is better than Andre. The Grand Wizard looked up toward the ring as he stood there with his charges and he was handed a microphone. The Grand Wizard We accept Andre! But it will be on our terms when we say so, not the other way around! ------ The crowd boos as out walks Superstar Billy Graham to the ring, sliding inside and taking a microphone. Superstar Billy Graham I promised everyone last week that I would be unveiling my new protege here tonight in New York. The Superstar always keeps his promises, always. So I am introducing the NEW protege of Superstar Billy Graham: Jesse 'The Body' Ventura! The crowd booed even more as Ventura walked out and slid into the ring, posing for a few moments before being handed the microphone. Jesse Ventura Superstar, it's good to be here beside you but what isn't good is that it had to be in this city in particular. You know that New York isn't the city for men who look as good as we do. It's a city for dogs and rats. Not for Superstars and Bodies. Superstar Billy Graham So true, Jesse, so true. Then let's get out of here before they infest us with their poor bodies and lacking physiques. The crowd booed as the Superstar and the Body walked out of the ring. ------ vs. S.D. Jones vs. The Road Warrior Even Special Delivery Jones had to be impressed by the entrance of the Road Warrior with his manager Bobby The Brain Heenan. The Road Warrior set down the spiked shoulderpads at ringside and then charged Jones and the Road Warrior wasted little time in demolishing Special Delivery. He quickly ended the match by pinfall with a Shoulder Mounted Suplex, showing the domination he's had since entering the WWF. Winner: The Road Warrior Match Time: 1:58 Match Rating: D+ ------ The crowd rose in boos as Sgt. Slaughter and Don Kernodle made their way down to the ring and slid inside. Slaughter took up the microphone while Kernodle stood behind him. Sgt. Slaughter Attention maggots! Again every week I come out here and every week I challenge a new superstar to break from my Cobra Clutch. And every week no one does. I even upped the ante last week from $1,000 to $2,000 and still none of you pukes can break my hold. Tonight, I raise it to $3,000 for anyone who can break my Cobra Clutch. Is anyone back there man enough to give it a try? After a moment, out walks Tito Santana to some mild crowd cheers. He slips inside the ring and Don Kernodle is trying not to laugh behind Sgt. Slaughter. Sgt. Slaughter You do understand that you have to be able to get out of my hold, don't you, you little puke? I've had vomits that were bigger than you. Tito stretched on the ropes and got ready silently before moving over to Slaughter and allowing him to apply the Cobra Clutch! Tito fought Slaughter over and over again, pulling him toward the ropes and trying to use the turnbuckles to break the hold but Slaughter only fell backward and kept the hold on until Tito had no choice but to submit. Slaughter finally released the hold and rose up beside Don Kernodle. They both looked at each other and then began stomping Tito! He's already hurt guys! Come on! Slaughter dropped an elbow on the fallen Tito Santana. "When it comes crashing down and it hurts inside You've gotta take a stand, it don't help to hide. If you hurt my friends then you hurt my pride. I've gotta be a man. I can't let it slide. I am a real American. Fight for the rights of every man. I am a real American. Fight for what's right. Fight for your life!" Out from the back runs...Hulk Hogan!!! The crowd cheers wildly as Hogan slides into the ring and meets Don Kernodle with a flooring punch! He ducks a wild shot from Slaughter and levels him with an atomic drop! He clotheslines Kernodle over the top rope and Slaughter heads for the heels while Hogan poses in the ring to wild cheers from the crowd! Hogan is given a microphone. Hulk Hogan Well, you know something, Hulkamaniacs? I've been sitting in the back week after week listening to this dude talking about how nobody can break his dreaded Cobra Clutch. You know why that is, brother? Because he hasn't tried to put it on these 24 inch pythons, that's why. Sgt. Slaughter, you talk about how no one will accept your challenge that can beat you, dude? Well, you have an acceptance right here from the Immortal Hulk Hogan. Only I have just one question for you: Whatcha gonna do, brother? Whatcha gonna do when Hulk Hogan, all his little Hulkamaniacs and the largest arms in the world run wild over you??? ------ A video begins to play showing the bogs of Scotland once again with the sounds of bagpipes being played within the background. The camera focuses on a man who is smiling and playing the bagpipes. Roddy Piper Just when you think you have all the answers, I change all the questions! PIPER'S PIT COMING NEXT WEEK TO THE WWF ------ vs. The Wild Samoans vs. Ivan Putski and Tito Santana A heavy-hearted Captain Lou Albano led the WWF World Tag Team Champions the Wild Samoans out to the ring for this contest. Ivan Putski did most of the work in this match for his team as Tito was still suffering from the attack made by Sgt. Slaughter earlier in the evening. Ivan by himself was no match for the Champs and they dominated throughout with Afa securing a pinfall over Ivan with a Samoan Drop. Winners: The Wild Samoans Match Time: 4:08 Match Rating: D+ ------ Don Muraco stepped out from the back and headed inside the ring, taking up a microphone. Don Muraco Before I, the Magnificent One, wins the WWF World Heavyweight Title tonight I just want to tell Pedro Morales that I accept your challenge! I am going to prove once and for all that you're nothing compared to the Magnificent One and if you're lucky I might even put up my newly won WWF World Title against you. ------ vs. WWF World Heavyweight Title Match 10 Minute Time Limit Bob Backlund vs. Don Muraco Bob Backlund headed out to the ring with his manager Arnold Skaaland with Muraco already out there. This was a pretty decent match with new referee Nick Patrick officiating out there. Muraco used Skaaland at ringside at times to hide behind so that Backlund wouldn't catch him. Backlund nearly locked on the Cross Face Chicken Wing but Muraco got to the ropes. Later in the match, Muraco tossed Arnold Skaaland into the ring and Backlund and referee Nick Patrick tried to assist Skaaland out of the ring as Muraco grabbed a chair from ringside. Muraco slid into the ring and BANGED Backlund in the head with the chair! He tossed the chair out of the ring and set up Backlund for his famed Inverted Piledriver, lifting him up and nailing it! Muraco made the cover and referee Nick Patrick turned around and made the count... 1... 2... DING DING DING! 3! Muraco jumped up and raised his hands in victory, after hearing the 3 count! Referee Nick Patrick talked with the timekeeper and the decision was announced that the match reached the 10 minute time limit before the 3 count was made! Match Winner: Time Limit Draw Match Time: 10:00 Match Rating: C+ ------ After a yelling Don Muraco was cleared from the ring, Captain Lou Albano came out and rolled into the ring, taking a microphone. Captain Lou Albano Thank you for coming here tonight everyone. I just want to say to my old friend Jimmy Snuka that we miss you, pal, though we know you're in a better place. This one's for you. And a video played showing Jimmy Snuka's greatest moments before the fade to black. I'm Vince McMahon alongside Gorilla Monsoon and we've got some great action for you here tonight! Gorilla Monsoon That we do, Vince. Wrestling fans are going to get to see the legend Bruno Sammartino in action against the Unpredictable Johnny Rodz. We will also be seeing the debut of Piper's Pit with Roddy Piper's first guest being none other than Pedro Morales as he gets set for a shot at Don Muraco's Intercontinental Title. Vince McMahon That should be a very telling interview, Gorilla. And what a main event we have in store for the fans tonight as WWF World Champion Bob Backlund teams up with the eighth wonder of the world Andre the Giant to take on The Masked Superstar and Big John Studd with the Grand Wizard in their corner. But first, let's get to some words from the Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco ------ Don Muraco I want you to listen up, Pedro Morales and listen good. You come out here and you challenge the Magnificent One to put up the Intercontinental Title against you? What have you done to get a shot at this title belt? Absolutely nothing and it will stay that way. I'm going to prove to you and prove to the fans that you're nothing and not even close to Don Muraco's league. When I drop you with my Hawaiian Hammer you're gonna be wishing you hadn't even come to America, you cheap little punk. ------ vs. Bruno Sammartino vs. Johnny Rodz The veteran in Sammartino got the crowd's attention and was definitely the favorite within this match. It was about your average match and what you might expect from the elder Sammartino. Rodz really helped make this match pretty good. Sammartino got the pinfall win following the Sammartino Backbreaker. Winner: Bruno Sammartino Match Time: 3:58 Match Rating: C ------ A video begins to play highlighting the Cobra Clutch Challenge from Sgt. Slaughter as he puts away wrestler after wrestler until Hulk Hogan comes down and makes the save and then issues the challenge to Slaughter! ------ A video begins to play within an interview set where Roddy Piper is seen sitting upon a stool. Roddy Piper Hello everyone and welcome to the first edition of Piper's Pit with the Hot Rod himself Rowdy Roddy Piper. The man who gets the honor of being my first guest is none other than the challenger for the Intercontinental Title. Please welcome Pedro Morales! Pedro walks out to taped cheers and shakes hands with Piper before sitting down beside him. Pedro Morales Thank you for having me, Mr. Piper. How are you tonight? Roddy Piper I'll ask the questions around here, Pedro. Now, soon you'll be challenging the Magnificent Don Muraco to a match... Taped boos as Piper holds up a taped recorder and then clicks it off. Roddy Piper You can tell by the fan's reactions that he is not a popular guy around here. Pedro Morales I can see that, Mr. Piper. Well, I'll tell you this, I am going to do everything in my power to wrestle that I C belt away from Don Muraco when we meet in the big event here. He is a tough challenge. He IS the Intercontinental Champion after all for a reason. Roddy Piper I think it's safe to say you'll have the fans behind you, Pedro. Thank you for joining me here on this first edition of Piper's Pit. WWF fans, this has been Piper's Pit. Thank you for joining us. ------ vs. The Invaders vs. Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura This would mark the in-ring debut of Jesse Ventura for the World Wrestling Federation as he teams with his mentor Billy Graham against the Invaders. The Body actually looked pretty good in this match and the tag team work of him and Graham was definitely enough to pull the crowd into this match some. The Invaders were definitely overmatched though the fans seemed to want them to pull off the upset. Ventura pinned Invader 1 following the Body Breaker. Winners: Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura Match Time: 7:36 Match Rating: D+ ------ A video began to play showing the streets of downtown New York with litter covering the ground and homeless people asleep on benches and then the cameras focused on Ivan Koloff, Colonel Ninotchka and the Iron Sheik walking down that street, shaking their heads. Colonel Ninotchka Ivan, do we really have to stay in such a filthy place? This city is purely disgusting. Ivan points to a homeless person that is slowly waking up. Ivan Koloff That person represents America, Ninotchka. Look at him being so lazy. He cannot get job here because he chooses to sleep on park bench. It is so pathetic. He is just like every American athlete within WWF. They all think they can get by on the bare minimum and it will come back to bite them when they step into ring with a real Russian athlete like myself or an Iranian superstar like Iron Sheik. The Iron Sheik walks over to the homeless man and just stares at him. The Iron Sheik Iran and Russia Number one! U.S.A. hack ptooey! The Sheik spits on the homeless man who gets up swinging. The Iron Sheik ducks and the wild swing sends the homeless man to the ground where the Iron Sheik stomps on his back before locking on the Camel Clutch! The man cries out in pain as it is wrenched in hard. Ivan and Ninotchka walk over, shaking their heads. Ivan Koloff Stupid Americans. When will they ever learn? ------ vs. Eddie Gilbert vs. Charlie Fulton A very short match that the crowd barely had time to get into. Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert dominated the match from bell to bell, picking up a rather quick submission to a Figure 4 Leglock. Winner: Eddie Gilbert Match Time: 0:46 Match Rating: E ------ The crowd cheered as 'Real American' started to play and out walked the Immortal Hulk Hogan! Hogan flexed for the crowd as he slipped into the ring, cupping his ear to the crowd before tearing off his shirt. Hulk Hogan Well, you know something, Hulkamaniacs. I came out here last week after seeing Sgt. Slaughter give an injustice on Tito Santana. Slaughter, Tito didn't win your contest but that wasn't good enough for you was it, brother? No, you had to try to beat him down after the contest was over. I couldn't let that happen, brother. So now you're gonna have these largest arms in the world in your contest, Sgt. Slaughter. You're gonna have to see if you can keep the Cobra Clutch around Hulk Hogan, brother. And I think all these Hulkamaniacs agree that there's no way you can do that. I do have one question left to ask you Sgt. Slaughter. One question that's on the minds of each and every one of these Hulkamaniacs out here: Whatcha gonna do, brother? Whatcha gonna do when the power of Hulkamania and all my Hulkamaniacs run wild over you?!?! ------ A pre-taped segment began with Gorilla Monsoon standing by with Andre the Giant. Gorilla Monsoon Hello everyone. I'm standing here with the eighth wonder of the world Andre the Giant. Andre, at the big event this month you're going to be taking on Big John Studd. Your thoughts on this impending matchup? Andre the Giant Thank you for this time, Gorilla. Big John Studd, you think you are a big man but you're stepping into the ring one on one with the eighth wonder of the world. You will not have your manager to keep you safe. Just like tonight when you team with the Masked Superstar against myself and Bob Backlund. Tonight will be just the beginning of the end for you. ------ vs. Sgt. Slaughter vs. Frankie Williams Was this even a match? Slaughter dominated from bell to bell in a match that lasted less than a minute. He wrapped the Cobra Clutch on Frankie and Frankie quickly gave up. Winner: Sgt. Slaughter Match Time: 0:47 Match Rating: C- ------ A video begins to play showing the Grand Wizard and Big John Studd in front of a generic background. The Grand Wizard So Andre thinks he's the eighth wonder of the world? Well, not even the eighth wonder of the world could body slam Big John Studd here. We proved that when Andre took up the body slam challenge and LOST to Big John Studd here. You were right about one thing, Andre, tonight IS the beginning of the end. But it's the end for YOU! ------ vs. Big John Studd and Masked Superstar vs. Andre the Giant and Bob Backlund The battle began with all four men within the ring until settling down to Bob Backlund and the Masked Superstar. Superstar and Studd were, of course, accompanied by the Grand Wizard of Wrestling. Superstar started getting the advantage against the WWF Champion and tagged out to Studd. Studd focused on the back of Backlund and the Champion looked in peril throughout the match as Studd and Superstar used tags and kept Backlund within their corner. Backlund was able to reverse a Studd Bear Hug with ear claps and some help from Andre the Giant but both men lay prone on the mat as referee Dick Kroll began the ten count. At about 3 both men stirred and began crawling toward their corners. At about 5, Studd tagged in the Masked Superstar. Superstar came running over but stopped when Backlund tagged in Andre! Andre stepped in and grabbed the Masked Superstar, headbutting him to the mat! Big John Studd stayed outside the ring as Andre decimated the Masked Superstar with headbutts and he pointed toward Big John Studd before bodyslamming the Masked Superstar to the mat. Andre bounced off the ropes and Big John Studd caught him with a knee to the back that slightly staggered the big man. Studd came into the ring and gave Andre a swat to the knees with the Grand Wizard's cane! The referee called for the bell as Backlund came in and the show ended with a pier six brawl! Speaking of the Intercontinental Title, it's time for our opening match as that title is defended by Don Muraco against Tito Santana! ------ vs. WWF Intercontinental Title Match Don Muraco vs. Tito Santana The Magnificent One came out to boos from the crowd to take on El Matador himself. Tito actually pushed Muraco a little bit, helping to make the Magnificent One look even better within this match as the crowd really thought that Tito could pick up the upset win. But in the end, Muraco hit Tito Santana with the Hawaiian Hammer Inverted Piledriver and got the pinfall. Gorilla Monsoon What's the meaning of this, Mr. Studd? Why are you out here? Big John Studd I am out here to watch Andre the Giant wrestle for the last time, of course. It was a rather short match but Andre dominated and looked very good in the match as he prepares to do battle with Big John Studd very soon. Andre finished the match with the Butt Drop, getting the pinfall just as Big John Studd entered the ring behind him. Winner: Andre the Giant Match Time: 2:54 Match Rating: C Following the match, Studd attacked Andre from behind with a double axehandle to the back of the head. Bob, it's good to have you here. Bob Backlund Thank you, Gene. It's good to be here. I wanted to talk for just a few minutes, if I could about my bout this Friday night against the Masked Superstar. Superstar, everyone knows that you only got this match because of the untimely passing of Jimmy Snuka but you better make the most of it. You better step into that ring and give it 110 percent. But even then you won't have enough to defeat me for this belt. This belt means everything to me. I am the representative of the World Wrestling Federation. This Friday night, you're going to know why I hold this belt when I make you submit to my CrossFace Chicken Wing. Gene Okerland You heard it from Bob Backlund. Now, let's head up to the ring for our main event. ------ vs. The Masked Superstar vs. Pedro Morales The Masked Superstar was accompanied to the ring by the Grand Wizard, who has made it his goal in life to dethrone Bob Backlund and will get his opportunity to do so on Friday night but first the Masked Superstar has to face a tough challenge in Pedro Morales. This was more of a scientific bout than many people anticipated with Superstar and Morales matching toe for toe in this bout. Superstar had Morales down for several near falls before Morales began his comeback with the crowd behind him. Morales clotheslined down the Masked Superstar and even went after the mask but the Masked Superstar hid against the ropes and referee Dick Woehrle backed Pedro off. At this point, down came the Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco. The Magnificent One jaw-jacked back and forth with Morales and the Masked Superstar grabbed the referee to keep his attention. Morales turned back toward the Superstar and Muraco slid inside the ring, belting Morales in the back of the head with his belt! Muraco ran out of the ring and the Masked Superstar locked in the Superstar Clutch! Morales fought and fought with the crowd's support but eventually he had to succumb to the pain. Winner: The Masked Superstar Match Time: 8:30 Match Rating: C Following the match, Muraco slid inside the ring and began putting the boots to Morales! The Masked Superstar joined in with the boots and then held Morales up so Muraco could smack him across the face! Muraco held up the belt, telling Morales that this is the closest he'll come to it. Then the crowd cheered as out ran Bob Backlund! Morales fell to the ground as the Masked Superstar and Don Muraco exited stage right! Backlund checked on Morales and stared down the other two men as the show came to a close. Final Rating: C TV Rating: 1.51

The ring has been reinforced tonight as we will see two of the largest men in wrestling going one on one when Andre the Giant meets Big John Studd! We will also see The Magnificent One Don Muraco defending the Intercontinental Title against Pedro Morales. Vince McMahon And you can't forget our main event as Bob Backlund defends the WWF World Heavyweight Title against the Masked Superstar! But let's head up to the ring for our opening contest. ------ vs. Ivan Koloff vs. Ivan Putski Putski was already in the ring when Ivan Koloff came walking out along with Colonel Ninotchka and the Iron Sheik. They slid into the ring and Koloff took a microphone. Ivan Koloff Everyone please be silent and rise for the playing of the USSR National Anthem! Koloff, Ninotchka and Sheik stood at attention as the music began playing while the crowd booed and started a 'U.S.A.' chant! After about a minute, Putski had heard enough and attacked Koloff from behind with the crowd cheering him on! Putski had that early flurry of offense but it was short-lived as Koloff came back and quickly put an end to Ivan Putski's chances. Within about a minute or two, Koloff lifted Putski into an Inverted Backbreaker and got the submission win! Winner: Ivan Koloff Match Time: 2:57 Match Rating: C Following the match, the Iron Sheik and Colonel Ninotchka came in and helped Koloff put the boots to Putski! The Iron Sheik locked on a Camel Clutch and Ninotchka slapped Putski across the face! The hold was on for several minutes before Sheik finally broke it and the three raised their hands in victory to boos from the crowd. ------ Out from the back to the top of the ramp walked Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse the Body Ventura. Superstar Billy Graham How can you have a big show like this and not have the big guns to show for it? Somehow, the Superstar and the Body got left off the show. It's a pity for you wrestling fans that tonight you won't get to see us in action. Jesse Ventura Yeah but Superstar you know what we can do, right? We can issue a challenge tonight to whoever wins the WWF World Tag Team Titles match later on. Whether it's the Samoans or the Soul Patrol. It doesn't matter because the Superstar and the Body are the best. And this has been YOUR pleasure. ------ vs. Big John Studd vs. Andre the Giant This was the battle of the big men with the $5,000 still on the line if Andre can bodyslam Big John Studd. Studd went right after Andre early in the bout with forearm shots, sending Andre back into the corner. Studd whipped Andre across the ring and came running after him but was met with an Andre clothesline that rocked the big man backward but didn't quite floor him. Andre came over and gave Studd a big headbutt! Studd is rocking and reeling but not quite toppling. Andre reaches down to get Big John Studd in a body slam position but Studd grabs the ropes to keep from being lifted and he nails Andre with a knee right to the solar plexus and gains the advantage. Studd kicks Andre in the gut and nails him with a forearm shot to the back. Studd focuses on the back of Andre for the next few minutes, a smart move to keep Andre from being able to body slam him. The crowd starts cheering for Andre as Studd continues his momentum. He sends Andre into the corner and tries to whip him across but Andre holds the top rope! Studd tries again but Andre doesn't budge! Studd releases and goes to kick Andre but the Giant catches his foot! Studd's eyes go wide and Andre spins him around, catching him in an atomic drop! The Grand Wizard is visibly upset at ringside! Studd pulls away and rolls outside the ring and Andre follows him out. The two exchange rights and lefts outside the ring with Andre whipping Studd into the barricade seperating the fans from the ring! Andre goes right after him though and reaches down to make another body slam attempt! But Andre's back gives out on him and he falls to the concrete floor with Studd on top of him. The bell sounds and the announcement is made that both men have been counted out! Winner: Draw - Double Countout Match Time: 9:53 Match Rating: C+ ------ The camera cuts to a backstage area where Gene Okerland is standing by with the Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco. Gene Okerland Hello everyone and I hope you've been enjoying the show so far. My guest at this time is none other than the Intercontinental Champion the Magnificent One Don Muraco. Don, tonight you defend that title against Pedro Morales. It should be a tough matchup for you. Don Muraco First of all, it's Mr. Muraco to you or the Magnificent One if you please. But you're not even important right now. What is important is that tonight the fans are going to get to see the greatest WWF Intercontinental Champion of all time in the Magnificent One. Pedro Morales, you're not even going to be remembered after this match and the beating that I give you. Tonight, you are going to be squashed by the Hawaiian Hammer. ------ vs. WWF Intercontinental Title Match Don Muraco vs. Pedro Morales These two have been going back and forth here lately since Pedro came out and saved Ivan Putski following the arm wrestling challenge between Muraco and Putski. The start of the match had a little bit of pandering to the crowd as Muraco flexed his muscles to boos from the crowd and Morales flexed his to cheers. They went back and forth several times until Muraco attacked Morales when he turned toward the crowd. Muraco turned his focus to the knee of Morales, dropping a shoulderblock to the knee and then a rolling leg snap. Muraco flexed to more boos from the crowd. Morales was on the defensive here for most of the match until Muraco went for the Hawaiian Hammer. Muraco lifted Morales up but Pedro rolled Muraco into a small package and got a two count. Muraco quickly went back on the attack but he was thwarted by Morales and the cheering of the crowd. The two began to brawl at this point near the corner. Referee Dick Kroll stepped in and tried to seperate the two but he got pushed out of the way. He stepped in a second time and again got pushed back. The third time it happened he signalled for the bell and announced that he was disqualifying both contestants! Winner: Draw - Double Disqualification Match Time: 17:53 Match Rating: B The bell sounding didn't seem to phase Muraco or Morales. The Magnificent One fell out of the ring and grabbed his IC Title belt! He started moving up the ramp and Morales attacked him from behind! The two continued their brawling up the ramp and out of sight! ------ The crowd booed as Bobby "The Brain" Heenan stepped out with a microphone in hand and stood at the top of the ramp. Bobby Heenan I know I'm not supposed to be here tonight, humanoids, but do you know why? Because no one within the World Wrestling Federation is man enough to take on my Road Warrior. Every hamandegger he has faced has been taken down to the point that everyone within the locker room is afraid of him. It's a complete conspiracy! The WWF wrestlers don't want to face the Road Warrior because they know that they can't stop him! This Sunday night I am going to set my Road Warrior loose. He is going to have free reign and if anyone wants to step up and challenge him and lose then go ahead and do so but be warned that the Road Warrior will be unleashed humanoids. ------ vs. WWF World Tag Team Titles Match The Wild Samoans vs. The Soul Patrol Jesse Ventura and Billy Graham are taking an intense interest in this match, as are all the other tag teams within the World Wrestling Federation as the Wild Samoans defend against Soul Patrol. Afa and Sika started the match strong, focusing their attack on the Soulman Rocky Johnson, keeping him down and out of reach of his partner. Captain Lou looked pretty confident throughout the match until Rocky Johnson tagged in Tony Atlas! Atlas came in like a house on fire, clotheslining down both Samoans and military press slamming Sika! He ducked a clothesline from Afa and lifted the Samoan up in that military press fashion! Captain Lou slid Sika one of the title belts and then got up on the apron, distracting the referee! Sika made Atlas drop Afa by hitting him with the title belt in the back! Sika rolled out of the ring and Captain Lou dropped down as Afa made a cover... 1... 2... SHOULDER UP!! The crowd popped as Atlas somehow got a shoulder up! Afa bounced off the ropes and went for a splash but Atlas got the knees up into the sternum! Afa rolled off, holding his gut as Atlas crawled toward the corner and tagged in the Soulman! Rocky Johnson came in and hooked Afa with a crucifix pin! 1... 2... Kickout! Afa somehow kicked out! Sika came in the ring and got stopped by Tony Atlas. The two began a brawl where referee Dick Woehrle had to step in. He began escorting Atlas out of the ring and Sika turned, nailing Johnson with a savate kick! Johnson staggered toward Afa, who lifted him into a samoan drop and made the cover quickly. 1... 2... 3!!! The Wild Samoans successfully defend their belts! Winners: The Wild Samoans Match Time: 7:59 Match Rating: C ------ And the time has come as Sgt. Slaughter walks out to the ring and slides inside along with Private Don Kernodle. The crowd boos Slaughter and Kernodle as they stand within a corner and then out comes Hulk Hogan! The crowd cheers majorly as Hogan walks out and slides inside the ring, flexing for a moment and showing off those largest arms in the world. Slaughter steps to the center of the ring with Hogan and they jaw where the crowd can't hear them. Hogan is all set to be placed within the hold, waiting for Slaughter. Slaughter steps back and confers with Don Kernodle for a moment before stepping toward Hogan and then...the hold is locked on! The Cobra Clutch is locked on Hulk Hogan! The crowd roars for Hogan as he struggles with Slaughter, trying to break the hold! Hogan is slowly fading within the hold until the crowd begins chanting 'Hogan, Hogan, Hogan!' The cheers from the crowd seem to revitalize his efforts! It looks like he might be...He might... Slaughter releases the hold and attacks Hogan! A kick to the gut and he puts Hogan into the piledriver position! Don Kernodle comes over as Slaughter lifts Hogan up and together they spike piledrive Hogan! Hogan holds his neck as he flails on the mat in pain! Slaughter and Kernodle put the boots to Hogan while he's down on the mat! Out comes Eddie Gilbert! Hot Stuff slides into the ring and exchanges rights and lefts with Slaughter and Kernodle! Kernodle charges him and Gilbert drops him with a Hot Shot! Gilbert ducks a Sgt. Slaughter right hand and levels him with an atomic drop! Slaughter and Kernodle make the escape as Eddie Gilbert stands over Hulk Hogan, watching over his friend! ------ vs. WWF World Heavyweight Title Match Bob Backlund vs. The Masked Superstar The Masked Superstar is, of course, accompanied to the ring by the Grand Wizard and the referee is Dick Woehrle. The first five minutes of the match showed a good technical back and forth spot between Backlund and the Masked Superstar. They exchanged some amateur wrestling holds for several minutes before the Masked Superstar went into some brawling times. Backlund is not as well-versed in brawling so this advantage definitely went to the challenger. The Masked Superstar began focusing his attack on the neck and head of Backlund, using the Grand Wizard to his advantage at times with distracting the referee and distracting the referee himself so the Grand Wizard could attack Backlund. During the midway point of the match, Backlund was able to bring the Masked Superstar down with a double leg and a few punches to the head of the Masked Superstar! Backlund turned his attention to the back of the Masked Superstar when he had the advantage. Backlund went for the Crossface Chicken Wing but the Grand Wizard stepped up on the apron and Backlund went after him. This allowed the Masked Superstar a quick rest break and when Backlund turned back after him the Superstar raked his eyes and took him down with a snap suplex and a floatover pin! 1... 2... Kickout! Both wrestlers are in excellent physical condition though with a match this long anyone would become a little winded as they continued to beat on each other. Late in the match, Backlund went for the Chicken Wing again but the Masked Superstar hit him with an elbow. The Grand Wizard tossed his cane into the ring and referee Dick Woehrle grabbed it as the Grand Wizard slid into the ring. The Grand Wizard threw a punch at Backlund but the referee turned around and saw him in the ring and called for the bell! Winner: Bob Backlund Match Time: 22:31 Match Rating: B- Following the sounding of the bell, the Grand Wizard hit a low blow on Backlund as the Masked Superstar loaded up his mask. The Grand Wizard held Backlund up and the Masked Superstar headbutted him over and over again! Backlund was left bloodied as the Masked Superstar and the Grand Wizard raised their arms in victory as the show ended. Final Rating: B-

WWF Championship Wrestling Sunday, Week 4, May 1983 Washington Coliseum Washington, D.C. Attendance: 4,850 The show opened up with a video showing the battle between Bob Backlund and the Masked Superstar. Backlund was left upon the ground at the end of the match bloodied and beaten but still with the WWF World Heavyweight Title. ------ vs. The Road Warrior vs. S.D. Jones The Road Warrior was led to the ring by Bobby The Brain Heenan. Special Delivery Jones came out and accepted the open challenge laid down by Heenan but he wasn't much of a challenge for the Road Warrior. In a little over a minute, the Road Warrior was finished with him, dropping him with a Shoulder Mounted Suplex and then getting the pinfall. Winner: The Road Warrior Match Time: 1:32 Match Rating: D+ ------ A video began to play showing the Grand Wizard and Big John Studd. The Grand Wizard That match last Friday night was a travesty. Big John Studd here wiped the mat with Andre the Giant but he didn't get the winner's share. The match ended with Studd on top of Andre, didn't it??? Andre, we want another match! We want a match at the next big show. Are you tough enough to accept another match with Big John Studd here? Next time he will finish breaking your back. ------ vs. Johnny Rodz vs. Eddie Gilbert Another short match here tonight. This one was dominated by Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert over Mr. Unpredictable. Gilbert has looked good here lately and hit a few top rope moves that was unlike him. Gilbert finished the match with a Small Package on Rodz to get the pinfall. Winner: Eddie Gilbert Match Time: 1:51 Match Rating: E+ ------ A backstage area is shown where Mean Gene Okerland is standing by with Andre the Giant. Gene Okerland Hello wrestling fans. Mean Gene Okerland standing by here with Andre the Giant. Andre, that was a very difficult match you had this past Friday against Big John Studd and he's already challenged you to a rematch. Your thoughts? Andre the Giant Gene, everyone here knows that Big John Studd is a very tough competitor. He very nearly had me beat but he couldn't get the job done. If Studd wants a rematch then it shall be granted and I will win that body slam challenge. I guarantee it. ------ vs. The Strongbows vs. Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura The Strongbows are former WWF World Tag Team Champions but they are facing a stiff test here as they take on the new team of The Superstar and the Body. This was a solid back and forth contest that was a short bout indeed. Jesse seemed a little off his game tonight but it was the Superstar that picked up the win following a Karate Thrust to the Throat to Chief Jay. Winners: Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura Match Time: 2:35 Match Rating: D+ ------ A video was shown highlighting the recent bout between Don Muraco and Pedro Morales. The bout was a great contest that ended in a double disqualification. Then focused in on a graphic showing that a rematch will be coming. Vince McMahon That's right, ladies and gentlemen! We're going to be having a rematch between Don Muraco and Pedro Morales at the end of the month for the WWF Intercontinental Title! Gorilla Monsoon With their bad blood and the first match under their wings, this should be an excellent contest between the two men. Just who will walk out of the contest the Intercontinental Champion, Vince? Vince McMahon I would hate to wager a guess, Gorilla. But let's head up to the ring for our next bout! ------ vs. The Iron Sheik vs. Tony Garea The Iron Sheik was accompanied by Colonel Ninotchka and Ivan Koloff to the ring to face the ring veteran Tony Garea. Sheik dominated the match from start to finish even as the crowd began their 'U.S.A.' chant. He just ignored it and locked on a Camel Clutch on Garea and Garea didn't last long before giving up. Winner: The Iron Sheik Match Time: 2:58 Match Rating: C ------ A music video begins to play hyping up the soon-to-come debut of a new tag team here in the WWF. The new team? Boat and Blood: Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood! ------ vs. Hulk Hogan vs. Mr. Fuji The crowd cheered heavily as Hulk Hogan came out to the ring and slid inside to take on the veteran Mr. Fuji. Fuji started the match out fast with an eye rake and focused on the back of Hogan with stomps and other swift moves before Hulk started his Hulk Up! The crowd cheered for Hogan as he absorbed several punches from Mr. Fuji while standing up. He pointed at Fuji and then blocked a punch, slamming several into Mr. Fuji, backing Fuji into the ropes. He whipped Fuji across the ring and hit a big boot. Then came his big legdrop and he made the cover, getting the 3 count! Winner: Hulk Hogan Match Time: 3:51 Match Rating: D+ ------ A video package began to play showing highlights from the match between the Wild Samoans and Soul Patrol from this past big show. The Samoans got the pinfall victory following a samoan drop. ------ vs. Ray Stevens vs. Bruno Sammartino And it's main event time as the Crippler takes on the veteran Bruno Sammartino! The crowd got into it as the match went back and forth. Stevens controlled the majority of the middle part of the match, working over the back of Sammartino but Sammartino started making his comeback. The crowd really got into the comeback as Sammartino dropped Stevens with a body slam and a knee drop! Sammartino lifted Stevens and nailed him with the backbreaker and then got the pinfall victory. Winner: Bruno Sammartino Match Time: 9:49 Match Rating: B Following the match, Ray Stevens rolled outside the ring and Bruno requested a microphone. Bruno Sammartino Though I am Italian-American, I wanted to come out here and say that I believe it is deplorable what Ivan Koloff and the Iron Sheik have done. They are misrepresenting the rest of the world! Therefore I am issuing the challenge for Ivan Koloff to meet me in the ring and I will show him what a real American is all about. After a few moments, Ivan Koloff, the Iron Sheik and Colonel Ninotchka came out toward the ring with Ninotchka waving the flag of the U.S.S.R. They all slid into the ring and Bruno met each of them with right hands! Bruno started off fighting off both of them but the numbers game finally brought Sammartino down! The Iron Sheik locked on the Camel Clutch as Ivan went over to Ninotchka and got the Russian flag from her. The Iron Sheik released Sammartino and Ivan Koloff laid the U.S.S.R. flag over Sammartino. All three of them stood behind Sammartino and raised their arms in victory as the show went off the air. Final Rating: C+ TV Rating: 1.64

WWF Championship Wrestling Sunday, Week 1, June 1983 Veterans Coliseum Cedar Rapids, Iowa Attendance: 993 Vince McMahon Hello wrestling fans and welcome to the World Wrestling Federation's Championship Wrestling! I'm Vince McMahon here along with Gorilla Monsoon at ringside getting ready for a great night of action. Gorilla, tonight we are going to see Bob Backlund get back into the ring after last week's attack by Masked Superstar. He's going to take on Sgt. Slaughter. Gorilla Monsoon He better not underestimate the Sarge. If he does, we could be seeing a new WWF Champion! Vince McMahon Indeed, Gorilla. Let's head up to the ring for our opening match as Andre the Giant takes on Don Kernodle. ------ vs. Andre the Giant vs. Don Kernodle Kernodle came out alone for this match against the eighth wonder of the world. Kernodle tried his all to bring down Andre but couldn't even get the man off his feet. The announcers talked about the upcoming rematch between Andre and Big John Studd as Andre brought Kernodle down with a body slam and then bounced off the ropes, landing on Kernodle with the Butt Drop and getting the three count. Winner: Andre the Giant Match Time: 5:34 Match Rating: B- ------ The cameras moved backstage where Gene Okerland is standing with Pedro Morales. Gene Okerland Hello everyone. Mean Gene Okerland back here with the number one contender to the Intercontinental Title: Pedro Morales. Pedro, you and Don Muraco wrestled to a double disqualification last time. Your thoughts on the upcoming rematch? Pedro Morales Gene, I lost my head in that last match and Don Muraco walked out with the belt. It's not going to happen again. This time it will be Pedro Morales walking out as the Intercontinental Champion one way or another. The Magnificent One won't look so magnificent. Gene Okerland Interesting comments from Pedro Morales. Let's head back to the ring for our introductions by Howard Finkel. ------ vs. George Steele vs. Hulk Hogan The Animal along with Freddie Blassie were both already in the ring when Hogan made his entrance to cheers from the crowd. He slid inside the ring and began tearing his shirt off to a massive amount of cheers! Steele attacked Hogan from behind and the match began with the Animal on the attack. He suplexed Hogan to the mat and made a cover but only got a two count. Steele kept on the attack, using instructions from Freddie Blassie at ringside. Steele moved to the turnbuckle and began gnawing on it, bringing the referee over and pointing to the turnbuckle. Behind the referee's back, Blassie swung his cane and caught Hogan in the face with it! But Hogan no-sold it! Hogan's eyes went wide as Steele came back over and Hogan shrugged off a few shots by Steele, pointing and then wagging his finger at the Animal. He blocked a punch and began hitting him with right hands as the crowd cheered. Hogan whipped Steele into the ropes and hit him with the big boot! He cupped his ear to the crowd to decide which way to go and then moved Steele accordingly before bouncing off the ropes and landing a Leg Drop. He made the cover and picked up the huge 3 count! Winner: Hulk Hogan Match Time: 6:47 Match Rating: C ------ A video begins with the Grand Wizard and Big John Studd standing by. The Grand Wizard Andre, you call yourself the eighth wonder of the world. You're looking at a man who needs no other titles. You're looking at my man Big John Studd. There may have been a double countout before but this time there will be a submission as my man wraps his arms around you and squeezes the life out of you. He will end the career of Andre the Giant at the end of the month. It is guaranteed. ------ A video is shown to promote Boat and Blood, showing them with another region's tag team titles around their waist as they wrestle. It looks like they'll be bringing those belts with them here to the WWF. ------ vs. Ivan Putski and Tito Santana vs. Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura This was a little more of a tough test for Superstar Graham and Jesse Ventura as they didn't have the advantage throughout the entire match as they have before. In fact, Putski went after the Polish Hammer on Graham but was stopped from behind by Ventura. The Body looked good within this match and showed some improving brawling skills but it was Graham that secured the win over Putski following a Karate Thrust To The Throat. Winners: Superstar Billy Graham and Jesse Ventura Match Time: 7:30 Match Rating: D+ ------ A video package began to play showing the ending of Bruno Sammartino's match with Ray Stevens and then Bruno's challenge to Ivan Koloff which led to Bruno being covered with an U.S.S.R. flag. Then a graphic showed Ivan Koloff on one side and Bruno Sammartino on the other. Vince McMahon That's right, ladies and gentlemen, at the end of the month Bruno Sammartino is going to get his chance for revenge as he takes on the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff. Back in 1971, Ivan Koloff defeated Bruno Sammartino for the WWWF World Heavyweight Title. Will Koloff be able to get the win again? ------ The cameras move backstage to show The Grand Wizard and Big John Studd in a locker room area. The Grand Wizard Next week, Andre the Giant is going to be in the arena, John. That is our chance to get an advantage. If we - The Grand Wizard looked toward the camera and shook his head, pointing toward the cameraman and Big John Studd pushed him away. ------ vs. WWF World Heavyweight Title Match Bob Backlund vs. Sgt. Slaughter A very good main event as Backlund took on the Sarge with Don Kernodle at ringside. Kernodle looked a little worse for wear after being taken down by Andre earlier in the evening. The match itself was a little awkward as their styles didn't seem to gel within the ring. Slaughter had the lead during the match and yelled out at the crowd and they booed him back, beginning to cheer for Backlund. The Sarge went to move in for the Cobra Clutch but got caught by an elbow by Backlund! Out came the Masked Superstar to the ringside area to boos as Backlund started to get the advantage. Backlund drew Slaughter down by a double leg takedown and made a cover... 1... 2... Broken up by the Masked Superstar! Referee Dick Kroll calls for the bell! Winner: Bob Backlund Match Time: 7:40 Match Rating: C+ Following the match, Don Kernodle joined Slaughter and the Masked Superstar in the ring and on the attack on Backlund! The Champion was in peril... It's Hulk Hogan!!! Hulk Hogan is in the building!!! The Hulkster climbs into the ring and makes the attack, bringing down the Masked Superstar with a punch. He body slams Sgt. Slaughter and clotheslines Don Kernodle over the top rope! Hogan stands in the ring watching over Backlund as the show goes off the air. Final Rating: C TV Rating: 1.58
