Azaria wastes no time in identifying them both; Randall Hopkirk, former XFW World Champion and still sporting the belt – and Grandmaster Phunk, a mainstay of that same company. “What up?” Phunk asks cheerfully. “S'prised to see us, bro?” “I never thought I'd come here,” Hopkirk nods. “Guess I am, though. “The rumours are true; XFW is on its last legs. I've given so much blood to that company...” Hopkirk stops, overwhelmed by emotion. “We all did, man,” Phunk cuts in in support. “We all did. And what happened? We got our damn feet kicked out from under us. “Some scumsucking little outfit ducked in and grabbed the TV deal we were negotiating for out from under us. Some pathetic little company padding itself out with has-beens and no-hopers from Hollyweird. “Oh, yeah,” he grins around. “That sounds familiar, don't it, boys?” Hopkirk has recovered now. “YOU COULDN'T HANDLE US! “You bring in these mainstream pansies who run screaming from hardcore matches. You sign little ****s who're never going to be able to make it when things get tough. “And you,” his finger stabs out at the fans. “You're no damn better. What's the matter? Not got the balls to even watch real goddamn fighting?” “Well, I'm here now. And that means your precious little safety net is about to be torn down. “And we're going to start with the littlest **** of all.” “'Sright,” Phunk nods. “Time to take it to the Man, yo, but we're gonna do that by starting with his youngest boy. “Sammy Bach, you think you a real man? You think 'cuz the pork mountain couldn't keep you down you know from pain? “You get your ass out here and show us what you got. We be fair to you now – you got a chance at my man's belt. “Not that giving you a shot counts as giving you a chance. An' everyone else... watch real close, man. 'Cuz you might just be next.” XFW World Championship w/ vs. w/ Randall Hopkirk © w/ Grandmaster Phunk vs. 'Boy Wonder' Sammy Bach w/ Helen Bach Phunk barges his way onto commentary as the bell sounds, and Hopkirk goes to work systematically. It's a pure showcase match, as Sammy bounces around as ever for the bigger man's offence before Hopkirk gets serious, trapping him in the corner and raining rights down until the white bandanna starts to stain a vivid red. Helen Bach does what she always does, driving a forearm into Hopkirk's kidneys, and that buys Sammy enough time to leap up, aiming for a rana – but Hopkirk counters it into a brutal looking powerbomb. “Go time!” Phunk yells from the sidelines. “Let's make an end now, bro!” Hopkirk promptly scoops Bach back to his feet. “Check this, J-Man,” Phunk says confidently. “You about to see a Randallism committed.” And that's exactly what happens, Hopkirk pinning the broken Sammy moments later. It seems like a steady stream of biased chatter is going to be par for the course, with Azaria's newfound liking for Philly Pro becoming clearer as he distances himself from Money's assertions. Marlowe and the Arsenal put together a good, enjoyable match, mostly focused into a brawl, which goes for quite some time before Marlowe actually – somewhat to the crowd's surprise – begins to gain the upper hand on the Arsenal, eventually getting him in the air preparatory for the Jackhammer. He begins to turn into the move - -And he sees Whistler there at ringside, and halts, shocked. Arsenal promptly twists, shifts, lands on his feet in front of Marlowe. A boot, a double underhook, and the Ammo Dump finishes. Human Arsenal defeated Black Jack Marlowe Rating: C- Once again the video screen bursts into life. A distorted, electronic voice begins to speak. “The only way for humanity to prosper is complete disarmament,” it begins... A flash of lightning... a mushroom cloud... a child weeping, agonised, the tears tinted crimson with blood... Tracer fire at night over Baghdad... A computer simulation of a spreading red cloud across America, lettering displaying PROJECTED LETHAL AREA OVER FIRST WEEK... And then a black screen, with, slowly forming, a single caption. HUMAN ARMS MUST BE ERADICATED. A silhouetted face emerges on the screen, wearing some kind of mask. “I will save you. I will end the suffering. I will eradicate the arsenal that made me.” Human Arsenal stands there, watching, frozen. Marlowe capitalises with a low blow from behind. Whistler scrambles after him, and Chase goes to protect the downed Arsenal, doubled over. Helen Bach moves in behind her, grabs her and plants her with the Bronx Buster, rising up again immediately and calling for something, arm raised in invitation. Seconds later, Rich Money comes crashing down across Emma Chase with the Dollars from Heaven as Helen pumps her fist in the air in celebration... Demon Anger isn't far behind Bach, continuing an assault as Whistler comes to the Arsenal's assistance. It's an uneasy situation for Whistler and the Arsenal, outnumbered and outgunned. And then Danny Patterson comes in behind them, cutting Money off with the Bomb from Bow Bells, clotheslining Marlowe over the top rope. Anger and Bach retreat promptly. It's clear that Anger's knee is still giving him trouble, and it does hurt proceedings to some degree – there's only so long a top guy can afford to play stunned while stalling for an opponent to set up – but Hall shoulders the bulk of the Golden Age's burden in this match, doing sterling service in looking great while keeping Gilmore and Flash looking like stars. It takes til near the time limit before a World Shatters on Hall – a hell of an achievement by the big man to make that move look good – transitions into the Utopia Trap submission, and Anger's knee injury finally aids the match as he legitimately looks unable to get there in time to break it up. I'd like to say, by the way, thanks to everyone who's voted for this diary in the DOTM. I've got maybe one more shot, but whatever happens, I've been nominated every single month of this diary. I was lucky enough to get the Rookie win when I started. I figure that's a good run by any standard. Whoever you vote for, get out there and vote!

Dad had the TV deal set up, and I remember he and Andy were talking about how they were going to promote the show each week. “There wasn't exactly much slack in the budget, so buying our own commercial time on National Pride wasn't going to work. They gave us a bit of early promo time, but obviously that got spent on trying to sell Philly Pro, not any given show. “I'd been doing a lot with computers in high school, and I kind of offered to set up a website and put the big matches out on there. “Well, it ended up happening. Nothing huge – we were never going to threaten what swf.com was even then, but we got a couple of interviews up from time to time, just written, we had the roster, and we had the schedule pegged. I eventually managed to figure out how to set up an automatic mailing list. “And that, this being 1998, was about all we could afford. No room for FMV footage that no one would be that happy downloading anyway, not even much space for pictures, we were totally on a shoestring. “What was interesting was that about half the hits we got came from Japan. We weren't posting results. We weren't posting anything, really, but what was due to come, but I guess there were enough of us working over there that they wanted to keep track. “Toward the end, Dad was starting to get online properly. He wasn't working the site – that was still my responsibility – but there were things he got hooked on, like the forum someone set up for Dog Pound graduates. “So one morning, I'm down in the basement gym doing my squats, and Dad walks down and tells me he wants to rig up a poll on the website. “To see who me and Adrian were going to defend against at the next PPV.” -- “I kept hearing that our site was doing pretty well,” Dangerous offers. “About fifty per cent of our viewers seemed to be swinging by once a week to see what was on the slate that night, which is a huge proportion of the fans to be online. I was talking to Duane Fry earlier about his work on swf.com, and he was saying it's maybe a 15% share. Now being fair, a lot of that is that people actually know about the SWF. When the internet site is your main advertising strategy, it's always going to have a bigger share. “But I wanted to do something that would say thank you to that chunk of our audience. So we did this poll thing. “If I had the time to do it over again, I'd have been smarter about it; I would've featured the idea on the show, plugged the site, all that good stuff. “I didn't pay enough attention to our financials. I hadn't realised that our big gimmick sales weren't coming from shows anymore – we had a nationwide following and we hit five states on a regular business, how was that meant to stay the bulk of our business? “But I didn't realise that. I didn't know the website store was our big money-spinner as far as merchandise went. If we'd put up an offer on the poll page, put some publicity on the site through the show... “Well, it wouldn't have saved us. But I can't help thinking it would've helped.” -- With apologies to Marcel Fromage
With apologies to Marcel Fromage
Hey, no need to apologise. :) It's always flattering when diary writers use an idea similar to something I've used, especially such a top diary writer as yourself. Plus I don't think I was the first on here to use a poll anyway. Sorry I didn't get round to predicting that last show. This continues to build to its climax though. And reminds me...must go and vote in the diary of the month!

I'm very happy with how the readers seem to have slowly gotten behind them. In an ideal world - one where I was expecting to continue on through into 1999 - I had plans to use them and Bryan Holmes with the Freebirds Rule (the Texas Outlaws rule in C-Verse, to judge by the '75 mod) and finally pay off their two years of hard work. In that ideal world, Any Means Necessary was intended to debut in January, with a turned Hype at the head. Their initial targets would've been the lower-ranked faces, not big names; Chandler, the Natural, Bach, Harvey, Cattley... trying to drive them out of the company altogether, before working up to bigger game, probably folding Joel Bryant into their midst. The 'Freebirds' would've been mostly feuding with the New Wave and the Dangerous Brothers to try and get all three teams a lot more over and experienced, holding the titles for some months by dropping them - who to, I hadn't decided. Whistler & Rick Sanders was a duo I was contemplating as a short-term reign; I wanted to bring the Peaks in, too, and spin off a brothers vs. brothers feud... Meanwhile, Bryan, McClean, and possibly Joel would've begun terrorising the upper ranks of the faces. Expecting, as I have been for some time, Pete Hall to sign a written deal in Japan, I was vaguely noodling around having Holmes run him out of the promotion when it happened. Eventually this would've led to a handicap gauntlet match against the new Pride of Philadelphia, Chris Rockwell. (Yes, that would be in September 99. I tend to think in terms of really, really long feuds.) Rockwell would then go on to enter a three-way feud with Holmes and the New Millenium Athlete, Bart Biggz. ... I've just realised I had more planned for those guys than most of the roster, as the rest of the roster seem more at risk of vanishing (plus most of the rest of the roster are more likely to have their feuds adjusted when, say, I re-sign Tommy Cornell). Anyway, just a glimpse into my slightly deranged planning style. Bear in mind when you consider this that my original draft for Karloff's revamp involved Jimmy Cox and would have happened in December 1997, just after I blew off the Century/Whistler feud.

The Any Means Necessary men function smoothly together, McClean keeping that ****y smile in place throughout the match as he watches for developments, keeping Chandler and his ally from turning the tide while Coleman does much of the heavy lifting. It's McClean who finishes things, however, taking the Natural down and out with a Stain Removal in a match helped by CGC's spreading reputation in New England. Now no knock on Sammy Bach here – the kid's got heart and he can wrestle, man, he really can – but when you come into a company and you take on a kid who's been wrestling barely a year, never held the gold, it doesn't prove your company was better. “I've held championships in New York. I've held championships in California. I've beaten Pistol Pete Hall, who's won acclaim on two continents. I am the Pride of New York. “Hopkirk, I know you. I know you worked hard where you work. I know you've spent a lot of time under a hood, like some kind of bandit, and that you've done OK for yourself doing that just like you have in XFW. “And I know XFW takes good men and scars them, tortures them, drives them until they can ignore pain. “That makes me ask a question; can I beat you? “The one place I've worked where I haven't held gold, you see... it's here. And you've got some that I think I deserve a shot at. So test yourself. Rockwell and Hopkirk circle as the bell sounds, Rockwell goes to lock up, and Hopkirk headbutts him. The Pride of New York takes a couple of steps backward, nods to himself, and goes straight to a crisp standing dropkick, following up with a surfboard – for about four seconds, before releasing the arms and stomping down, driving Hopkirk's face into the mat. In seconds the contest has become and out-and-out brawl, and it's hard to say, now, who has the advantage, with Hopkirk sticking to simple but highly effective tactics. Eventually Rockwell manages to nullify the onslaught, going to a wristlock – arm wringer – single arm DDT and effectively destroying Hopkirk's ability to deliver slams by mauling one arm. The XFW champ fights loose and comes back with kicks before bailing from the ring. A blatant chair shot on the outside gives Rockwell the DQ victory. The greatest hits of all four major stables in Philly Pro are cut together, focusing on the stable leaders – Gilmore, McClean, Cornell, and Money – as well as Bryan Holmes' sheer determination. A few shots from Holmes' A* Japanese matches seem to have found their way into the package, presumably relying on distance and anonymity to prevent lawsuits. It closes on superimposed images of tonight's four main eventers over the Tri-State Championship belt laying on crisp red silk. The bell rings, and Gilmore immediately hurtles toward Rich Money, with Cornell and Holmes staying back for the moment, watching. Money weathers Gilmore's initial storm, slams him, and looks for the Dollars from Heaven – but Holmes, impatient as ever, springs to the top rope and superplexes Money into Gilmore instead, his stablemates' tag team finisher seeming all too appropriate here. Cornell goes for a cover on Gilmore, who kicks out – somehow – and rolls to the outside. Frustrated by that, Cornell clamps the Guilt Trip down on Money while Holmes recovers – and while Gilmore recharges his batteries with a long kiss to Hatoyama on the outside. The Guilt Trip, that famous grapevine crossface chickenwing, has Money almost entirely trapped – but Holmes makes it worse, grabbing a leg and applying a single-leg crab simultaneously. Under that degree of pressure, Money reluctantly yields. “Protecting his stake for the next investment,” McClean remarks derogatorily. “You gotta buy all the way in to win, Rich.” Rich Money Is Eliminated Cornell rolls clear, breaking the hold, and Holmes staggers him by snap-suplexing Money into him before Goldworthy can get his stable leader to safety. Gilmore promptly re-enters the ring, launching from the top rope into a tornado DDT on Holmes, but Holmes kicks out. Cornell, mostly recovered, goes for the Rough Ride – but Gilmore manages to twist in mid-air, looking to land on his feet – but one knee goes out from under him and he drops, somehow managing to convert it into a schoolboy as he does so. Holmes dogpiles the schoolboy, using his added weight to keep Cornell's shoulders down for the three count. Tommy Cornell Is Eliminated. It's one on one now, but Holmes has spotted a weakness. Even as Azaria notes that Holmes has only picked up the scraps of others' work for the two eliminations thus far, he dropkicks Gilmore's damaged knee, driving him down to the mat. A wheelbarrow slingshot suplex follows while McClean points out how Holmes has been using the others' bodies as his weapons, and a furious argument that raises the stock of all four men breaks out on the announce desk. Gilmore counters the Final Impact release German with an elbow and whips Holmes to the ropes, looking for the World Shatters – and Holmes bails as he hits the ropes, spearing Hatoyama on the outside. Furious, Gilmore goes after him and the brawl explodes ringside. Kit gets involved, too, hitting the Hatoyama Driver in final vengeance for Holmes' earlier anger toward her. McClean explodes in indignation as Azaria coolly points out that disqualification isn't typical in elimination matches. Gilmore and Kit roll Holmes back into the ring and Gilmore makes the cover – and Holmes kicks out! Shocked, Gilmore sets up for a German suplex – and Holmes elbows clear, takes a step forward, and nails the Cyclone Kick, back-rolling into a pin immediately. This time, there is no kickout. Man Mountain Cahill stands revealed, glowering at the camera. “I am the Man Mountain,” he scowls. “Let me tell you what I'm about.” Another highlight reel begins to play now, dwelling in particular on the chokeslam off the stage that took Tommy Cornell out, as well as all the nastiest shots from Cahill's Corner segments. ”I have kept people coming back to this godforsaken company. I have held gold here. I have destroyed champions. “People ask me why I act this way. I tell them the same thing you hear whenever the announcers tell you where I come from; it's none of your Goddamn business. “I have seen people fight over my services. Because I like to hurt people. Because I'm good at it. Because I have championship potential written all over me. “And because they wanted to use me. But I'm no one's tool, you hear me? “I am the Man Mountain, and I've got a list to work through before I get back to what I do best. Arsenal – you're right at the top.” -- A strong outing from New England sees Philly Pro's name value increase even as the hour approaches midnight. Next on Philly Pro: The Mind of Phil Vibert. It's clear that this is not a time he feels happy talking about. “So at this stage, it was clear that we didn't have long. Blame it on the TV, blame it on the expectations when we moved beyond a regional thing, blame it on... whatever. “We didn't have long. We were making fans. We were selling out. But we couldn't make ends meet, and we couldn't punch through to the level where we could.” He pauses. “If we'd been losing less each month...” A shake of the head. “It wasn't great, though. And somehow, Phil found out, I never worked out how...” -- Archive event footage now from DaVE's Lords of the Ring 1998. Phil Vibert stands in the ring alongside Kurt Laramee, at this stage one of DaVE's most promising young stars. “Today,” he growls, “you were meant to have a treat. Today, you were meant to see two title matches. “At great expense, I have secured one of the hottest free agents in wrestling. And he has brought with him the last remaining scrap of credibility belonging to a dead organisation, the only part of that organisation worth commemorating, which he will put on the line – because it is rightfully his – against this young man tonight with a view to unifying its memories with the memories and pride of the DaVE Extreme Championship one day in the future. “Oh, no. I misspoke. “You see, at great expense I bought the contract of Randall Hopkirk, the XFW World Champion, who's become open season with XFW's demise. And I bought, also, the championship belt from its owner. And tonight, he was asked to come here and challenge the King of the Streets. “But where is he?” Vibert pauses theatrically, looking around the Stanley Hall interior. “I don't know. Not yet. Soon, I plan to, and mark my words... there will be trouble.” -- “I heard about their issues,” Vibert begins, “the same way everyone hears about these issues. Wrestlers talk, man. And enough of our boys overlapped companies that it was bound to happen. “Thought nothing of it to start with. I started thinking about signing some of their guys once they went, but that was about it. They were keeping it quiet, but unless I could make it into an angle, going out and crowing about it wouldn't have done anything except make me feel better. And... There was this amazing locker room feeling. Everyone wanted to be there in the run to the last show. “I know for a fact a few of 'em actually negotiated contract extensions just to make it to the end. “But then XFW announced it was closing. Public-like. And it was probably going to close before Philly Pro. “So at the start of November I made some calls. I talked to Barber, I talked to Dangerous, I talked to National Pride. “They seemed happy enough to switch from Philly Pro to us provided we could raise enough awareness before the handover. We picked up their contract and put together a few plans. “I know it hurt Andy to agree, but...” He shrugs. “I think he wanted to make sure something lasting came of it. And I don't think he wanted the company to just die. “Selling up was better. Not a lot, but just enough. “And on New Year's Day, 1999... we began Danger Zone TV. I had the money to do it, just about, and between DaVE talent and the guys we could sign... I was ready.”
