ECW 2006: The Blunder That Changed Wrestling

I told Paul that if he ever needed my help, he had it. This was one of those times clearly.

 

It didn't surprise many when word got out of Paul Heyman's meeting with longtime friend and apprentence Gabe Sapolsky following a ROH show in Philadelphia. If there were ever two kindred spirits in wrestling, it was these two. Gabe picked up where Heyman left off, booking the relativly small Ring Of Honor promotion to similar heights ECW experience in 1995-1996. Currently they were doing an invasion angle of their own with Combat Zone Wrestling, which was infact winding down.

 

Heyman and Sapolsky spoke about old times, the ideas for both ROH and ECW but quickly got down to business. After some speaking, Heyman and Gabe agreed on a "agreement". Several ROH stars would be on their way to ECW.

 

The roster was seemingly set. And with the final Raw before "ONS2", a 3 hour Raw dubbed "ECW vs. WWE", where Heyman's final address to the WWE would be a highlight, Heyman was satisfied with what he had accomplished.

 

But that sense of satisfaction would be erased and filled with a sense of anger and betrayal.

The special was literly announced the week earlier as the WWE decided to use one of it's 3 hour Raws to try and insure a bigger buy rate. The show would see WWE talent from both brands facing established ECW stars. At least that's how it was susposed to go.</p><p> </p><p> Vince McMahon had become rather angered how ECW was looking better in this angle and the buzz he thought was to be created surrounding him and the WWE was creating an even bigger buzz for ECW. Granted, he did want competition and that's what it was, but still Heyman and ECW should know who the boss and who runs stuff is. So before the show, McMahon and head of talent John Laurinaitis ha a conference during the day and later on that day, Laurinaitis spoke to all the WWE talent competeing at the show and essentially told them all to shoot on the ECW guys. Some guys like John Cena, Edge, Rey Mysterio and other high level or ex ECW guys refused. But several who were looking to move up in the card saw it as an opportunity to show the WWE higher ups they were ready to play ball.</p><p> </p><p> The show started off rather well with an exciting battle between Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio, won by RVD in a solid face vs. face battle ending in a handshake. Mickie James defeated ECW's Jazz and Paul London and Brian Kendrick defeated the FBI in a pair of throw away matches. Then things got interesting, during an Extreme Rules match, JBL clearly shot on Balls Mahoney, hardway busting him open and blistering him with stiff shot but Balls shot back at him. Following the match backstage, Balls was forced out as he was certainly going to try and take out Bradshaw. </p><p> </p><p> Things cooled down as Chris Benoit faced Tajiri in a good bout. Then the second case of shooting took place, when during a tag team match between The Dudley Boyz and the young team of Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, Cade stiffed and attempted to shoot on Bubba Ray Dudley of all people, but Bubba countered it by shoot breaking Cade's nose. Keep in mind, during a match where Murdoch turned on Cade and joined ECW. Backstage, all hell broke loose as the ECW guys realized that the WWE guys were stiffing them and a near riot took place. The next match, saw Edge face Tommy Dreamer in an Extreme Rules match, won by Edge in a very good contest. Then once again the shooting continued as during the Sean Morley/William Regal match, Regal shot and stretched Morley to the point Nick Patrick had to stop the match, but Morley ever the game then nailed Regal with a stiff punch and a knock down drag our brawl took place as referees and security broke them up. The hype by the announcers of the "heat of competition" between the 2 promotions, but in the bac everyone knew what was going on.</p><p> </p><p> During the break, a group of WWE wrestlers led by John Cena, Edge and others came to the ECW wrestlers and told them Ace wanted them to shoot on them but they wouldn't for sure as they're professionals, they just wanted to warn them. Heyman and his guys thanked those guys for the honesty and info. But the ECW guys had a plan to get back at the WWE. And this all took place at the big 20 man battle royal. As the WWE and ECW wrestlers entered, the ring was filled with tension and when the bell rang, it was on. The match was reddled with stiff shots and legit heat. The match was eventually won by Terry Funk, one of the few ECW guys who didn't let emotions get to him. Following this, Paul Heyman was out for his final address. He encouraged fans to buy the PPV to see what ECW would be like and what a real wrestling promotion was like. He promised unlike WWE PPV's, you'll get your money's worth. Heyman said following Sunday ou'll never see the letters ECW on a WWE screen ever again. And as a result of it, the WWE's ratings will once again hit the floor. Heyman seemed relativly subdued in this promo, clearly pissed at how his men where shot on and blatently disrespected. The event ended with John Cena and Mr. Kennedy ending in a double DQ as both factions ran down and again brawled, once again resulting in quite a few stiff punches and potatoing. But the most damage done was when Bubba Dudley and JBL got into which resulted in the 2 getting into it again backstage. Following the show, word of the difficulties reached many wrestling websites and this war seemingly got hotter as real feelings were now involved. </p><p> </p><p> McMahon loved that his guys cooled ECW rather quick, making them look foolish and showing his men were superior. Heyman was pissed. He thought of all the ways he could get some kind of revenge on Vince and the WWE for what they did. <p>OOD: I really wanna thank everybody's who is reading this and thinking it's good. This was actually a throwaway project as I was having a hard time figuring out how to write up my numerous eWr dynastys. But I'm honestly honored that this is somehow a 5 star dynasty and I haven't posted a full card yet lol. All I can say is thanks so much everyone, and keep reading and responding and I will try not to disapoint you. </p><p> </p><p>

--only makes sense to establish ECW's true heel here by costing Van Dam, who has to be the face of ECW, the belt. Ken Kennedy come on down. I think a thing similar to how Heyman/Big Show turned on RVD and ECW in general combined with a new breed angle (heyman going heel as well) is the only real way to go.</p><p> </p><p>
