The shock cash-in was cool when Edge did it the first time. It was different and creative, and it fit his character perfectly. That was nearly ten years ago, and it seems like nearly every MITB winner has cashed in the same way. It's beyond played out. What I would do is add a stipulation where the champion has to be given advanced notice before the cash-in. A week, a day, an hour, whatever.

I don't think the MITB concept is played out, just has to pick who wins the MITB to begin with better. Rollins was PERFECT to hold the briefcase as it made a brand new character and his WM cash in was the best since the Punk days. Sheamus is not a main event talent. It has simple as that. He doesn't need to be Champion, he didn't need to be the MITB winner. Another thing that hurts is that Sheamus hasn't won a match in months, and now, he's World Heavyweight Champion?? I would bet money Kevin Owens will win next year and that can be hit or miss because it's another cowardly heel winning, therefore it'll be the same story "jump from behind post match, cash in, kickout at 2, finisher, new champ." It's all about booking though, which is WWE's biggest problem right now.

I was actually expecting Roman to end up winning off the cash in as that hasn't been done before and would have been another way of building him up.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Vocal fans don't want Reigns as champ. They also don't want Sheamus as champion.

Clearly there is only one man for the job at this point. Someone who the internet consistently loves and remembers fondly.

I thought the PPV was average. I'm a huge Ambrose fan and would have loved to see him win, but wasn't surprised at all he didn't. I thought it was a great match though, very physical. I don't know why both after Reigns won, I completely forgot about Shamus. So I guess you could say I was "shocked" when he cashed in. I do agree with everyone else though, it makes no sense that he has been buried for the past 4 months and now suddenly he's the champion. They should have just put the title on KO it at least would have been a more entertaining story.

It's an effective way to get heat for a heel and has been part of quite a few legitimately very good storylines in a relatively brief period. And it's been varied pretty well, from Sandow losing his shot, to Rollins at Wrestlemania joining the match, to Daniel Bryan breaking his word to signal an upcoming heel turn, to Kane winning the briefcase and the title on the same night. Since the IC belt is worthless, it's a good way of building tension around the champ's vulnerability in a natural way for a guy that you might otherwise think doesn't have a chance in a fair fight.

What is the moral of the story....screwing the babyface over time and again leads to ratings jumping out the window. Honestly when Triple H was dangling the championship over The Rock's grasp in 99-00 got extremely boring but the fact they done it for a year was painful.

Now we have Triple H dangling the title over Roman Reigns it's even worse. It's almost to the point I'm about to start watching TNA again. A guy that is as big as Reigns does not appeal to the fans as an underdog...it worked for Daniel Bryan because he was a little guy. Reigns needs to be booked as a badass killer in the ring that barely speaks. He does not need to look weak on so many occasions. If they are insistent on pushing Reigns then they need to book him properly and stop trying to force him to be Daniel Bryan.

I thought about this the other day; when was the last time WWE had a 3-4 month tour with a consistent babyface champ? Cena held the belt for two months before losing it to Lesnar, and before that, Daniel Bryan had it for two months before his injury. You have to go back to Cena's April to August 2013 run for the last time a babyface held the belt for more than two straight PPVs. Considering WWE was built around the drawing power of babyface champs like Hogan, Austin, etc., it's odd that we've seen heels hold the belt for most of the past 3+ years. What's maybe more depressing for WWE is that the babyfaces to do it, other than Reigns, are Cena, who's probably on the verge of being a part-timer, Punk, who's gone, and Bryan, who's probably not ever going to be a top guy again due to his health.

Shoot, I never noticed.

A transformative era in WWE perhaps?

The NWA/WCW did good business relying on a top heel as champ. WWE should be able to do so as well, if done right.

Those with the WWE Network, there's now 32 episodes of NWA World Championship Wrestling from 1985-1987 up :D

No idea how I missed it, I've actually been watching WWE Network today, (just finished up a Raw from 1993, a few minutes ago actually), and I somehow overlooked this. Can't wait to get started with these.

That's a piece of my childhood, right there!

:D

I think this is the first time me and lazorbeak has ever agreed on something. *marks it down on the calendar*...now we have that out of the way. I love great heels as much as the next guy but they are tending to make it stale. Honestly I was rolling my eyes every time Seth Rollins appeared on screen. He was reminding me of Triple H during the reign of terror which was not a good thing.

Shemus is definitely not the answer and I really hope they realize this come TLC. I know they are short for options but why couldn't they just have formed the Euroauthority and kept the belt on Roman. That gave him plenty of opponents to keep him busy until Mania. Honestly they should have done that and quietly built Kevin Owens vs. Reigns at Mania.
