You can educate those young fans pretty quickly. I figure there would be enough adults in any live crowd who would know him and be excited, to get that good first pop (maybe go someplace where WCW ran a lot, just to be sure) Enough cool hype videos and superstars putting him over as a big deal, and kids will get the idea. I don't see it as that different to the Bret Hart deal. He was pretty special... at first.

I agree with this, when I first got into wrestling in the mid-1980's, I had no clue who Bruno Sammartino or Pedro Morales were. However, because my father was into wrestling and because he explained to me that they were big stars in their days (maybe not to the level of a Hulk Hogan), I appreciated them.

When I was a kid, Abdullah The Butcher was a very much feared and iconic wrestler to me..... and at that point, I had never even seen him wrestle! All I had to go on was a picture in a wrestling magazine, showing The Butcher with a fork buried deeply into some unfortunate soul's forehead, while the blood flowed like wine.

It got him mad over, at least in my mind.

I miss those times.

Anywho, WWE can easily educate anyone who needs to be educated about The Stinger. WWE just loves moments, remember, and if and when Sting shows up on Raw, (presumably), it'll definitely be a moment to remember.

An armbar may not be the most spectacular finisher, but at least it's a lot more credible than most WWE finishers. Like Rey's 619, for example, which may look good but makes little sense and looks like it only tickles the nose of the opponent.

Except when he busted a huge gash in Matt Hardy's head, and injured Undertaker twice with it... Arguably it's the most dangerous finisher in the WWE (second place might go to Sheamus' Cruxifix Powerbomb, with its unprotected head bump)

Hogan/Warrior worked because they had never worked against one another. Orton/Cena have wrestled each other 400 times, as recently as one year ago. The crowd was more interested in the Cena/Kofi staredown.

Probably the first week the last few months I've actually enjoyed Smackdown as much as RAW.

Kelly Kelly v LayCool in a main event mixed-tag match sounds crap on paper but it was pretty good. Kelly's guard-rail bump and crying were top class.

And I like how Vicki and Dolph are relentless in their pursuit of Edge's title.

Booker T on commentary was good and so was Hornswoggle hitting Del Rio.

I agree with Self here. I LOVE the Osirian Portal. Amasis even got Player Uno dancing!

And he really has an all round package (apart from finisher). Personally I think it's a positive - Punk, Orton, Cena and Trips wouldn't really have gained from a win, and they were the other names being banded about for a win (well, and Morrison who would, but having just had a title shot the effect wouldn't have been quite the same).

He just won a main event title match at Wrestlemania, weeks after beating Rey Mysterio to cap off a major feud that saw him go over Rey on several occasions in the main event spot on Smackdown.

Also I think we can say Alberto Del Rio won the Royal Rumble. It happened 7 days ago and three WWE TV shows ago, and has been on WWE's site since Sunday.

And I don't watch Smackdown often, but what I have seen of Del Rio indicates he is the total package. He's a believable tough guy thanks to his size and MMA experience (his finisher ties into that), he's got an incredible look, is a solid hand and is a third generation guy who understands and respects the business, and he has some of the best heel facial expressions I've seen in years.

Absolutely good for WWE for taking a chance on somebody that hasn't already been established for years and trying to create a "next big thing" type guy.

I've stopped checking this thread studiously and reading dirtsheets and I actually loved the Rumble. I've also cut back on the amount of Raw and SD! I watch, often just watching the recaps show each week so maybe I'm no longer over saturating myself. I enjoyed the two title matches, each had a few twists and turns and kept me interested.

The rumble was a brilliant success. 30 men always leaves me wanting more and 40 worked so well. People are mostly against the recent changes in wrestling PPV's but this didn't feel as gimmicky as those. They had several nice substories within the Rumble such as New Nexus, welcome returns for Booker and Diesel, Miz eliminating Orton and Morrison's fantastic spot. Not to mention Del Rio, anything but predictable and executed well.

I'm certain people will have disliked it and fully explained why, but I don't care any more. It doesn't have to be perfect, I enjoyed the event alot and look forward to future shows. I probably come across as really naive and markish (which for some reason is a bad thing online), but so many people watch wrestling constantly and moan about it constantly - it doesn't have to be that way.

As a side note, I think a part of it is I've got my girlfriend into wrestling recently and she watches it as a mark, almost. She has no idea of backstage politics, no idea how things work backstage, supports the faces and hates the heels. Seeing her reactions makes me enjoy the show so much more.

---

On the subject of people complaining about the same guys being in the title picture:

It's going to happen, you have two world titles. Everything is accelerated at double speed. Short of going back to one world title and via extension: one world title feud at a time - there's very little the WWE can do about it right now. Even if they did merge the titles, it's the sort of thing that would take at least a year to even itself out and start to feel fresh again.
