Citizen Kane was technically so far ahead of it's time that it's influences are still found in cinema today. In fact you list Godfather I and II, as well as Raiders of the Last Ark in your top 20. I can pinpoint exact influences and references to Kane in just those 3 movies.

 

But to each their own if you didn't dig the actual narrative, I guess.

Getting a top 20 movie list seems impossible for me....there's a few I keep returning to and that I think are top of the list. One of them is always The Usual Suspects....the cast is just phenomenal and the plot has been copied by a lot of movies. I'm also a fan of some of the early M. Night Shyamalan movies....thought they had more new stuff in them than a given Tarantino-movie.

Stone made some top quality movies as well (his Vietnam-trilogy was great, JFK, Nixon, Any Given Sunday....). Add Ridley Scott and James Cameron to that...

 

Star Wars 1-3 (the second trilogy) all qualify as overrated to me. Gave them one look, and that was it.

Thor is the name of a god, it is not a mantel that can passed on by whomever wields the hammer. They could easily create a character who becomes a goddess with a different name and I would be cool and the gang with that. </p><p> </p><p> However, people in entertainment will never do that because the name is what has been built up. Tough one could argue that Natalie Portman is such a star that it does not matter what she is in because people will support her movies no matter what.</p><p> </p><p> The next phase of the MCU seems to be focusing on some of the "SJW" Marvel characters. Now I wonder if people will pay to see these movies because they are Marvel movies or will people not see them because there is a clear agenda that they are pushing. </p><p> </p><p> I know when they moved towards that direction in the comics industry they ultimately failed as most of those books ended up being cancelled due to low sales. I am not sure that will be the when it comes to the movies. We shall see. </p><p> </p><p> As a side note, I find it funny that Natalie Portman complained about the lack of women directors in the industry. Yet Natalie owns a production company that has produced (or has movies in pre-production/production phase) nine movies. Out of those nine movies seven of them were directed by men and the other two were directed by Natalie herself. </p><p> </p><p> If she is so concerned with women as directors, why is she not hiring women to direct? I mean it is her company, one would assume she has say over who gets hired. </p><p> </p><p> That is why I never get why people hold actors and actresses in such high regard. They will preach at you to do one thing, then they do the opposite. Plus having dealt with actors in the past I can tell you first hand a lot of them are just weird people. </p><p> </p><p> They would be one of the last group of people who I would listen to when making any kind of decision.</p>

After I made my list found myself saying, "I should remove Hysterical (a movie that I am willing to bet very few people on this site ever had a chance to see) for Alien." </p><p> </p><p> Then Blazing Saddles comes to mind and I remember how great that was (The end was a huge letdown but the rest was funny). How about Psycho, North by Northwest, or Rear Window. The list truly does go on and on and it is tough to decide what makes the cut. </p><p> </p><p> Hell what makes the cut one day might not make the cut the next day. </p><p> </p><p> Out of the second trilogy I would say the only one I thought was really good was Revenge of the Sith.</p><p> </p><p> I find M. I am not sure how much of it is fiction and how much of it was fact. Because I often find that arguing on the internet is pointless. </p><p> </p><p> I think the Fifth Doctor Who (Peter Davison) said it best in regards to the casting of Jodie Whittaker in the role. He said that the casting of Jodie meant that young boys would lose a role model and I think to an extent that is true.</p><p> </p><p> Nobody has ever explained to me why there is a need to change already established characters into something else. </p><p> </p><p> What is the point? </p><p> </p><p> Why not make a show that featured a female Time Lord. Why did a character, that has been a male for fifty plus years, need to all of a sudden be played by an actress?</p><p> </p><p> Now with everything I have said above, I will point out that I was very wrong about Katee Sackhoff playing Starbuck on the new BSG. When I first heard the news that Starbuck was going to be played by a woman I had my typical reaction. </p><p> </p><p> Then I watched her and she was just awesome in that role and she quickly became one of my favorite characters on that show. In that instance I was wrong and I will admit it. But nowadays it seems like these sort of casting choices are becoming more and more common and it is painfully clear that there is an agenda being served.</p>

<p>I was stunned at the sheer amount of Marvel movies that are in the pipeline and in existance. DC should follow suit, as I generally don't care about Marvel. And what's with the lack of superhero games? There's been Spidey and now the average-looking Avengers game. What about a new Batman game, as the previous ones were quite awesome.</p><p> </p><p>

The new supergirl costume falls in line with the rest of the show. Not an ounce of skin isn't covered now. XD I don't care, as I don't watch the show (and for the record: it still looks cool and true to the original superman costume).</p><p> </p><p>

The whole movement of "female-izing" male superheros is just so hilarious on the surface. Instead of making Batwoman her unique identity or expand the Sif character from the Thor movies, we're getting a "female Thor". If your goal is empowerment, this kind of decision doesn't help at all. I'm no "SJW" but I do strive for social justice (as crazy as it sounds), and this slightly ticks me off. Those kind of people also piss on true female icons like Lara Croft, which actually do function as a role model for girls (not saying her behavior is perfect, but it trumps the disgusting, toxic attitude of the Batwoman from the trailer). I don't really get it, and quite frankly, I'm beginning to think they suffer from a bit of retardation here and there.</p>

Far as everything else, I've been pretty cool with Marvel's decisions so far, and I'm not going to judge anything until I see how they actually handle everything.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm not keen on the whole 'Thor' is a woman thing either, but I do remember they had it in the comics... so I will wait and see. I don't know enough about the Eternals to be upset about their leader changing genders. That is what I mean about so far I haven't minded any of the changes, as they have gotten the look of the main characters that I'm familiar with so close to the comics, I just can't complain.</p><p> </p><p>

What I don't like in any of the comics tv shows or movies.... Is when they take a character I'm familiar with and change them completely, as in gender, sexual orientation, etc. They already have plenty of characters that meet all those things, and there is nothing wrong with fleshing them out and making them awesome in my opinion. IF they can make me love the Guardians of the Galaxy, they can surely do it for whomever they want rather than changing the ones with a legacy into a "token".</p>

<p>SJW/representation movies did financially great in the last cycle, with Captain Marvel and Black Panther, so it's unsurprising to see them do more in that direction. They worked in the way that mattered.</p><p> </p><p>

"Female Thor" is such as odd pitch to me, as it seems to implies that Chris Hemsworth is being replaced as long-term Thor (which I'm 90% sure he isn't) or that the character needs updating and correcting for modern times, when... does he? He's not Star-Lord. He's not James Bond. I know they did it in the comics, but I'm reading the Civil War comics right now, and they're not good. Being faithful to the source material isn't great when it comes to these things. </p><p> </p><p>

However, I liked Ragnorok and What We Do In The Shadows enough that I trust Taika Waititi will do something cool with the concept. Something that gives us a lot of Hemsworth.</p>

As I have said in the past, I wonder just how well Captain Marvel would have done if it did not come out about a month or so before End Game. I have read that her role was going to be drastically bigger in End Game but the producers were worried about how well she was going to be received.</p><p> </p><p>

In regards to Black Panther, the was a lot of stupid stuff going around about that movie as well. Like people praising it for being the first superhero movie to have a black leading man. Which sorry Wesley Snipes those three Blade movies you starred in are not even real.</p>

Not that I hold the Oscar's in high esteem (or any award show for that matter) but Black Panther was not worthy of a Best Picture Nomination. All you heard about was how it was a miscarriage of justice that it was not nominated.

 

Brie's acting is debatable. I mean she has absolutely no charisma whatsoever. I think if you were to put Emilia Clarke, someone who has off the charts charisma and charm (Don't believe me? Just check her out in any interview she does. She is very charming.) there may not have been any backlash towards the movie.

I agree that Clarke has more charisma and charm than Larson. In fact, Clarke has been great in almost any role she takes (not counting GoT) and I hear she does her best role to date in Above Suspicion (about the first conviction of an FBI agent and tragic story. I read the book and it's a very captivating story!). Unfortunately, that movie is having distribution problems since it wrapped up back in 2018.

Billy on the Street was an excellent show. But now, thanks to you, I have the show's theme song stuck in my head.

 

I am not a fan of them remaking all of the various Disney movies. That being said I have no real connection to the ones that they are or will be remaking. Mainly because the vast majority of them came out when I was older. They are not "my generation's" Disney movies, they are the generation after me.

 

So movies like Mulan and the Lion King are not really special to me as some of the older Disney movies. To me the whole thing just screams as a cash grab from a company that can no longer come up with original material (But saying this, most of their classic stuff was not original either.).

 

I would love to see them do a movie with Mickey and company. When was the last one of those to come out? The last Micky related movie that I can think of off the top of my head was Who Framed Roger Rabbit and that was only a cameo.

I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood yesterday afternoon and it was decent. Nowhere near as good as the hype for it. It was what it was, an good homage to the 1960's. I mean where else would you ever hear Efrem Zimbalist Jr.'s name being mentioned? The ending was terrible.

 

I would say that Quentin Tarantino is losing a step but I said that after Inglourious Basterds and then he came back with Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight and it reminded me just how good he is. For me I think he should stop making movies that have real life people in them. This is from a more me standpoint because I have friends who are very historically ignorant and they believe that the stuff happening in these movies might be true.

 

For instance upon seeing Inglourious Basterds, my buddy asked me if that is how the leader of World War II Germany (I can't remember if his name is banned from this site) died. After laughing, I told my buddy how he really died. My buddy did not believe me and had to look it up on his phone (Yes some of my friends are really that dumb).

 

I will say this though, Margot Robbie was once again the scene stealer of the movie. With The Fearless Vampire Killers being the only movie I ever saw Sharon Tate in, I cannot speak on how good of an impersonation Margot did.

 

She looked amazing as Sharon Tate, especially when she wore the black turtle neck sweater, white skirt, and white boots. Man she is beautiful and she is a great actor as well.

The movie wasn't "Bad". Heck, it made a billion dollars, I don't care, that alone should tell you it wasn't bad because with those numbers people watched it more than once. The acting wasn't bad either. I took it as she was brainwashed and certain emotions aren't supposed to come out. Overall I enjoyed the movie. I know probably a few hundred mill is made just because it's a Marvel movie in the MCU, since I felt that Shazam was as good if not better... sorry, can't help the comparison "Captain Marvel vs Captain Marvel" thing in my head, not to mention Wonder Woman was a better movie overall as well.

 

Umm... I can't really explain the Aquaman thing, although I love it making a billion (and being top DCU movie). Not sure it was any better Than Shazam, or Thor Ragnarok.

The movie wasn't "Bad". Heck, it made a billion dollars, I don't care, that alone should tell you it wasn't bad because with those numbers people watched it more than once. The acting wasn't bad either. I took it as she was brainwashed and certain emotions aren't supposed to come out. Overall I enjoyed the movie. I know probably a few hundred mill is made just because it's a Marvel movie in the MCU, since I felt that Shazam was as good if not better... sorry, can't help the comparison "Captain Marvel vs Captain Marvel" thing in my head, not to mention Wonder Woman was a better movie overall as well.

 

Making a billion dollars is not proof that the movie was good. Avatar made that and the movie was decent but nothing great. Just like movies bombing does not mean they are terrible. It's a Wonderful Life was not successful when it first came out, but now it is considered a beloved classic.

 

I hardly ever put much stock in how movies do at the box office or how critics rate movies (A lot of critics now have a clear agenda in the movies they praise vs the movies the do not.).

 

As I have said before, Captain Marvel benefited greatly because it came out a few weeks before End Game. A lot of fans went and saw Captain Marvel because the character was going to be in End Game and therefore fans thought they had to see her standalone movie first.

 

Granted I cannot prove my theory, but I would have loved to see Captain Marvel come out like a year to six months before End Game just to see how much box office it did.

 

Shazam was great. I really enjoyed it.

 

I still haven't gotten a chance to see Shazam. It is at the cheap movie theater near me, but it has always been playing at times I cannot go see it.
