TEW10 Render Thread

Recommended Posts

Interesting looking cat. Something familiar in there.

As for asking whether people want cuts of your work, I say "To Hell with them!". People who read this thread get cuts of my work whether they like it or not. I'll shove my renders down their throats and assume their muffled shrieks are glowing praise. I'd print them out and forcefeed them to all y'all if I could.

Some say I crave validation. I say they're crazy... then ask them to compliment my cuts.

Which reminds me.......I really love your Adam Cole render/s. :)

I assume my cheque will be arriving shortly. :p

I will do the cut tomorrow 20LEgend and post it in here.

Thanks for the feedback!

Sorry about the image size, I got into the nasty habit of using "Save Last Render" because I was just cutting everything I made.

As for the skin, 9 out of 10 times I change skin to "skin" (or matte). As for lightning/shadows that isn't a strong point for me. I pretty much just use the "weidt spotlight" from Trell's tutorial. If you have any recommendations or suggestions on lighting the model for TEW/WMMA, please let me know because I could definitely use it.

I've recently been using the weidt lighting with the intensity turned down, along with a distant white light set at Y Rotation 170 degrees as a backlight and Uber Environment 2 at 4x Quality and I'm really happy with how they're turning out. The Uber Environment thing really seems to make a render pop.

Felt the need to render something that wasn't just a re-render,

Happy to share the light set I use.

UberEnvironment2 4XHi

Intensity: 40%

Just a couple of notes:

1. Adjust the intensity of your spotlight based on the skin you're using. I don't ever go above 40% and with most lighter skins I find myself using between 5%-10%.

2. To decrease render time, switch shadow type from raytraced to depth mapped and invest in uberhair shader so you can turn off raytracing and occlusion on hair.

3. You can use omnifreaker's human surfaces shader with these lights but they work fine and give a nice realistic skin tone without it.

Enjoy!

I'm just wondering if anyone has some referees laying around that I could use for my private game I'll cut them on the background myself and everything just wondering thanks

Not looking for someone to do a whole new render or anything of course so please don't take it as one

I have a handful that I did for my mod that are already cut. I just got home from a concert, but I'll try and upload them tomorrow. Or you could just download the mod and get them :p

If for some reason I haven't gotten them to you you by tomorrow night, shoot me a PM as a reminder.

Looks awesome Jsilver! I prefer the first lighting of the two head shots as the second one looks a little flat in comparison, but I expect it's a matter of what "feel" you're aiming for as well as the worker in question

Very nice, JSilver. Out of the two, I also prefer the first lighting. Better contrast to it. The eyes pop more.

Bored yesterday (internet got shut off in my place) so I put this guy together. First render in a while I wasn't trying to re-render a C-Verse guy or indy wrestling. Randomly twisting dials. Kinda half-arsed the gear too.

I said i'd show differences in my renders before and after post work, so here we are. Just a basic Render and one I've grown not to like from looking at it for so long :o So um yeah. There are 2 different base renders for this one. I setup my lighting manually for each render but the two examples are the type of lighting I setup most.

Base Render 1.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh18/blasphemy_web/TEW%2007%20Mod/Renders/tewtest1.png

This one uses Uberenvironment 2 & 2 faint spot lights to the left of the model, one angles from the front and one from the back. Theres no additional lighting to the front or to the right. I find too much light takes away detail.

Base Render 2.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh18/blasphemy_web/TEW%2007%20Mod/Renders/tewtest2.png

This one uses the Uberenvironment 2 and one raised spotlight behind the model, no other lighting. I wish I'd rendered it out with just Uberenvironment to show the difference that the spotlight behind makes, as i'm not good at explaining it.

So taking the first baserender into photoshop:

Postwork 1:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh18/blasphemy_web/TEW%2007%20Mod/Renders/tewtest1post.png

This is the routine I use mostly for the male renders, as it brings out the freckles, and other details in the skin.

Heres what I done in a nutshell:

1. Duplicate your layer

2. Go to "Image->Adjustments-> desaturate. You're image is now black and white

3. Go to "image->Adjustments->brightness/contrast. Adjust contrast until you have a good balance between black & white.

4. Next using the dodge & burn tools, and a low exposure (I use 17%), bring out the shadows & highlights in your black & white layer.

5. Change the layer mode of your black & white layer to "Overlay".

It's just my personal preference to work in black & white, it's the way I taught myself, and I find it so much easier to add detail when working without colour.

Postwork 2:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh18/blasphemy_web/TEW%2007%20Mod/Renders/tewtest1post2.png

I usually only do this kind of post work with female renders as it makes it look a bit more glamorous IMO.

1. Same as above

2. Same as above

3. Instead of contrast, increase the brightness slightly

4. Same as above except using only the dodge tool to take out most shadows.

5. Same as above

6. Create a new blank "curves" layer over your render, and adjust curve to a high intensity light.

Heres the 1st postwork on the 2nd render, they look similiar only with shadows in different place due to different lighting.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh18/blasphemy_web/TEW%2007%20Mod/Renders/tewtest2post2.png

So yeah thats the basics of what I do. Using the dodge & burn tools takes a bit of getting used to, just remember what direction the light is coming from and be consistent. As for learning placement of lighting, when I was learning 3dsmax, I read some books on photography lighting and I use real life studio lighting setups in both 3dsmax & Daz. Apologies again for being terrible at explaining things.

Edit: I decided last night that this is one of the few renders i've done where I prefer the base render to the postworked version lol

That's great info blasphemy. I appreciate it and I may even attempt to set something similar up.

I too use a real world lighting scheme, though I knew very little about lighting when I started. Fortunately, one of my wife's friends is a professional photographer. :D

I use a classic 4 point backlighting setup with a rear spotlight, a Rembrandt spotlight angled from the high right of the figure and a warm and a soft floor light. I've found that this way allows me to have to tweak the surface tabs less than I'd normally have to in order to achieve the results I want.
