DOA: The Evolution of GREED

Recommended Posts

Although it's much too late to incorporate this now, I just had an inspiration that Pecker Wrecker would actually have worked better as a valet's name ie the connotation that she wrecks their peckers. :p:D

haha. That certainly would have worked too, Dragonmack! :p

With Matty, The name is given because he 'wrecks' his own. Let's just say, He's most likely the 'employee of the month' (outside of the DOA) more times than not in a year.

Johnny Vicious vs. Mikey James

Go Monkey... finds his we want the mask sig.

El Dragón Dorado vs. Steve Flash vs. Teddy Powell

Heart says FLash headsas Dragon as he's the odd man out here as Flash and Powell get DQ for being out of the ring too long brawling.

The Tokyo Express © vs. Totally Supreme

I love me some Totally Supreme but not yet for champs.

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

Acid totally dominant Season 1

Johnny Vicious vs. Mikey James

-The vicious cycle spins back to the top.

El Dragón Dorado vs. Steve Flash vs. Teddy Powell

-Lights go down, Powell gets the win.

The Tokyo Express © vs. Totally Supreme

-Putting the tag straps on Totally Supreme makes sure they get promo time every week, something the Tokyo Express do not need.

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

-I'd love a Matty win here, but it's too soon for Acid to drop.

Woohoo! Can't wait...

Johnny Vicious vs. Mikey James

Continuing the long, hard climb...

El Dragón Dorado vs. Steve Flash vs. Teddy Powell

I'd like to see Flash pull out a wonder win but I don't think he will and since Powell is seemingly unstoppable he gets the pick.

The Tokyo Express © vs. Totally Supreme

DQ or Count-out. Tokyo are probably the better 'team' and Supreme are more useful to you out of the ring.

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

I agree that I'd love Matty to win but I can't see Acid dropping the title so soon. If it was a normal match I'd go for a draw but seeing as I can't, I'm going for Tyler's boy.

This is a pick for his work in PSW! He did not leave that promotion on the best of terms and I think John will make it up to him with a push.:D

Vicious is the Man! There's no way that he loses to Mikey James.

El Dragón Dorado vs. Steve Flash vs. Teddy Powell

This one could go any way really. I'm going with Steve Flash purely because I love the guy. Plus he's currently in a great storyline with Eric Tyler.

The Tokyo Express © vs. Totally Supreme

I know the TE will probably win but I really like Totally Supreme!

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

This feud has to be drawn out a little longer. Also I'm sure that the moral majority will have something to say about Matt getting into the main event. I'm calling some shenanagins! Better get your broom!

I think Mikey will make a better fist of it than whoever Vicious destroyed last week but ultimately Vicious will not be stopped until he gets that re-match with Acid

El Dragón Dorado vs. Steve Flash vs. Teddy Powell

Some Lights out shenanigans will lead to Powell picking up the win in this one.

The Tokyo Express © vs. Totally Supreme

As entertaining as Totally Supreme are I don't think it's time for Tokyo Express to lose the Tag straps just yet.

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

Same thing can be said for this match, one of the most entertaining characters in the promotion is in the position of challenger but it's simply not 'his time' yet.

Lazy route this time. Mainly since TK made the same picks I would and took the time to justify them, which I may not have.

Mid-week, 3rd Week of June 2010

... The DOA is growing ...

http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af315/Eisen-verse/The%20Suits/JensenTarver.jpg

The Director of Programming for the Arcadia Network; Mr. Jensen Tarver

“I believe we made the right choice; investing in our own wrestling program. The DOA has held steady numbers for its time-slot, generated a lot of buzz for the network, and ultimately, Has continued the overall tone that our Brand relies upon. [slight smirk; nodding in quick, yet suave, bursts] We’re seeing a healthy return; and then some. [stares John square in the eyes; relaying an arrogant smirk from ear to ear] We want to see more; I… want to see more. [Another slight pause; looking deep into my eyes] How do you feel about extending ‘Rapid Assault’ an extra 30 minutes? A full 90 minutes of DOA Action each week?”

This wasn’t a typical conversation with Jensen; a ‘garden-variety’ shooting of the breeze. There appears to be a glimmer of, dare I say, confidence surging through his signature perky demeanor. The first signs of a euphoric-like high: The mind-altering drug being Deadly Overloaded Action.

With my entire being focused on keeping my jaw in tact, creating a false sense of self-regulated confidence, I slowly return the favorable smirk toward Mr. Tarver. There are millions of responses bursting through my mind; exploding before my very mouth like a barrage of fireworks blanketing the night time air. However, with any business decision, I must find a way to properly convey a ‘smooth’ response; One that’s soaked with the perception of a carefully thought out scenario.

“90 minutes? How is that even possible? I thought we were ‘land-locked’.”

The term “Land-locked” is an age-old metaphor used by TV executives to describe a program that is surrounded by 2, or more, other successful programs. In a sense, keeping your program locked to a specific time-slot regardless of your own individual success. For the last 2 months (the duration of the DOA thus far), We’ve been thoroughly encompassed by some of the hottest late-night TV franchises in Arcadia Network history. So, with that being said, It stood as quite shocking to hear that “Rapid Assault” may find a longer time period given the scenario we found ourselves in.

“You haven’t heard yet?”

Mr. Tarver responds in an inquisitive manor.

“No? Heard of what?”

You would expect a slight pause; however, Mr. Tarver quickly topples my response with an explanation.

“’My Life According to Pepe’ is on the verge of closing it’ 3 year run. With that time-slot now open, We’ve kicked around various scenarios to replace one of our most popular institutions of original entertainment. [Pauses] We could open the slot to a new development; however, with economic demands, it may be best to fluctuate the presence of the DOA on Thursday nights. We already have a venue built for you, a full roster of individuals, and a loyal fan base on board. It would be simply idiotic to ‘green light’ a new project when extending the length of “Rapid Assault” makes more sense both from a bottom-line perspective, and creatively as a Network.”

(MY Cornellverse Explained: "My Life According to Pepe" is a weekly scripted TV show focused around a male High School senior attempting to understand the enygma that are: 'Women'. "Pepe" is the pet name the main character has given to his... well... 'man region'.)

His reasoning was rather solid. The economy is in the dumps right now and even the Arcadia Network, with a heavy predominately male fan base already in place, wasn’t immune to the dwindling marketplace. It made far more sense for the Network to simply extend “Rapid Assault” by 30 minutes than ‘green light’ a brand new project. In a sense, we all win from this situation. The Network continues to push it’s own original programming at a time (Lat Evening) where their true demographic (18-34 year old males) are more apt to watch TV. Also, The DOA is given the opportunity to further ‘flesh out’ its characters; bringing on more-in-depth feuds, personas, and matches.

“So let me get this straight, Jensen. We [DOA] get an extra 30 minutes added to ‘Rapid Assault’ each week? This isn’t a one-time affair? [i attempt to read Jensen’s body language while forging forward] What’s the catch? Blatant promotion of 3rd party products? Weekly celebrity guests? There has to be something that the Network wants in return.”

His demeanor never shifts. The same persuasive smirk running across his face, in a sense, proclaiming the TRUE beginning of the DOA’s rise in TV history.

“We ask for nothing ‘special’ in return. [slight Pause; still holding the same smirk] You will have 30 minutes more to each telecast without any extra strings attached. That’s how much the Network values your contributions, John. We see the DOA not simply as another ‘TV Show’ but rather as a powerful firework waiting to explode before the masses.”

A complete state of shock overwhelms my body at this point as Mr. Tarver’s offer appears even more so real.

“When will the shift take place?”

I respond rather calmly despite the internal fiesta forming within my stomach.

“First week of July. That gives us 2 weeks to administer a guerilla marketing campaign centered around the growth of ‘Rapid Assault’. That way, Once we hit the airwaves in July everyone knows to stay tuned past the first hour. [slight Pause; again, staring square into my eyes.] So what will it be, John? Do you think that you can extend ‘Rapid Assault’ on a weekly basis and still continue to deliver the kind of quality entertainment we’ve seen thus far?”

There was no other answer I could give at this point. Partly because to admit that it wasn’t possible would be to ultimately admit that I wasn’t a skilled producer; hence, practically signing my own pink slip. However, there also was another reason brewing up within like a tidal wave of emotion… I wanted this badly.

In a not-so-typical response, my absolute excitement over the new deal took over as I slowly lean forward in my executive chair; grinning like a mad-man in the process.

“We’ve got a deal.”

My life as a Los Angeles Television executive couldn’t be farther from my previous reality as a simple head booker for a gritty, underground, hardcore promotion in Pittsburgh. The glitz, and glamor, of “Hollywood” was certainly seeping into my everyday existence as I am fortunate enough to bask in the perks that come with the job; An amazing office filled with natural sunlight from glass windows overlooking the beautiful backdrop of Burbank, a quaint downtown apartment filled with furniture I actually purchased versus stealing from roadside drop offs, and a functioning car for the first time in my life. In a way, I was living ‘the American dream’… Only a few years removed from the depths of my own personal hell.

With all of this, You would think that I would be elated; overjoyed by the riches I’ve acquired during such a short time with the Network. However, there’s still a part of me that doesn’t feel like I belong in this ’world’. That I will always be labeled as a ’meat-head’, a ’wrestling junkie’ who just so happened to beat out a few other aging nobodies to take hold of the DOA-ship. Again, in a way, I find myself as ’the consummate outsider’ in ‘TV Land’.

As funny as it may sound, I could relate much better with the grime that was Pittsburgh Steel Wrestling. The unabashed, unadulterated, violence was something that came easy to me creatively as the very same feelings of self-destruction was consistently raging within my psyche. There was no glitz. No glamor. ‘The Ministry’ wasn’t a state-of-the-art sound stage, but rather, an abandoned church on the verge of being destroyed through city-mandate. To me, that WAS my very being. It fit so well with my every day existence as I was… PSW. Not in the sense that I ‘bled’ for the company but in the sense that the product brought forward was literally WHO I WAS at that point in my life.

So, where does that leave me now…

Deadly Overloaded Action was, originally, another job at first. A new opportunity, a new platform to convey my twisted viewpoint on wrestling to the masses. In no way did I expect to really have a ‘true shot’; however, in the back of my mind I KNEW that the opportunity could eventually develop into a creative oasis; that is if the Network allowed me to do so.

At first, I was hesitant. Afraid that my extremist viewpoints on what considers to be ‘good wrestling’ would be absolutely torn apart by other TV execs who knew no difference between a drop-toe-hold and an arm-bar. However, with time, I found that, while Pro Wrestling was STILL a foreign commodity to them, I had a ‘Franchise Player’ seated 30 feet away from my office door; The Director of Programming at the Network; Mr. Jensen Tarver.

While his knowledge of the industry as a whole is still a little ‘shaky at best’, His dedication to my vision of the DOA is something I can’t ever deny. He’s allowed me to open up the ‘flood gates’, giving me the opportunity to truly convey those principles that I deem as important from a creative stand-point. With that in mind, Deadly Overloaded Action is quickly become the personification of myself. The personification of GREED.

When I was an active competitor, My constant drive to better myself was almost always met with the over-reaching societal stigma placed upon me; that I was lazy, too liberal, and somewhat of a ‘quack’. Typically, despite my naturally insistent need to prove myself, my ’rebellious nature’ left many wondering if I ever had a clue to start with. One example was moving to Mexico in which to learn the tricks and trades of the Lucha Libre style. Sure, it may not have been ’ideal’ to some; however, the education I received there was immense; even if I’m unable to use it for myself in between the ropes.

My time in Mexico actually brought forth the Death-Defying Duo Division in the DOA. Mixing the Lucha Libre tag style with a more-modernized American twist. Ultimately, bringing a brand new division to the U.S. wrestling scene that has not only delivered amazing action in its short shelf-life; however, has also created a lot of buzz for our slowly developing organization.

All in all, even despite the constant push back from various other wrestling figures (ie: Sam Strong), I continue to forge on with the knowledge that, someday, the DOA-brand will debunk the myth that Pro Wrestling HAS to be slow, safe, and traditionally-based to gain support. In a day and age where technology is instant, creative minds push the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable, and modern science continues to evolve our view of the world we live in. So too can Pro Wrestling continue to innovate, evolve, and ultimately usher in a ’new era’ of entertainment.

Even if those in the ‘cheap seats’ continue to throw their verbal jabs from afar…

Thank you, Oracle!

There are so many great diaries on the board these days that it's really hard to 'keep up to date' at all times. I too have to play catch up more so than being an avid reader, so, I certainly understand the process. Great to know that you're enjoying what you've read thus far!

As much as Totally Supreme makes me laugh (my sis thought i had lost my mind when reading this), they probably won't take the titles. Speaking of funny, even my 53-year-old MOTHER, who doesn't know Tommy Cornell from a friggin' hole in the ground, was laughing as she does know who Vince McMahon is and the similarities between he and Eisen. THAT is how funny TS are. Just not title contenders, IMO.

Acid © vs. Matty Sparrow

Almost picked Sparrow just to be different but I quickly remembered the Moral Majority, who can and most likely will interfere. Still, that Sparrow alt will go down as one of the most accurate portrayals of a pornstar-turned-wrestler.

wow!

To be honest, that's awesome to hear, critical-23! Very cool!

Totally Supreme is, by far, one of my favorite things about the DOA. Originally, I was planning on creating a stable like this during my PSW project; however, it just never came together right. In the end, I'm really happy that it didn't take shape until now as it gives me something to look forward to writing for. I have A LOT of things in mind for them & can't wait to really unvail it all; it's just going to take time.

Luckily, with "Rapid Assault" turning into a 90 minute show versus the current 60 minute format, teams like Totally Supreme will be given more opportunity to really 'shine'. Really, in a way, the whole Death-Defying Duo Division will be granted more time to take focus. Plus, the Chokeout Championship is not far away from being debuted as well. So, the extra 30 minutes will make it possible for the non-main event competitors to continue to get their 'due' (as Tyler, Vicious, Acid, Matty, and Greg will always find their way into the show).

Can't believe I missed this here; Good luck with your surgery Angel. I hope your recovery time is short!

<hr color="black">

Episode #7 Update: I booked the show, ran it through TEW, and am now in the process of starting to write it all up. I'm really excited to get this show out there as it's quite possibly the craziest show the DOA has EVER had thus far. Storylines push on forward, a faction slowly begins to take shape, crazy action within the ring, and the debut of Greg Black! Overall, it's set to be a great show!

I'm not going to place any sort of timetable on the release of the results as I never seem to finish up in that time frame (always comes out earlier). So, it could be anytime in the next week or two (my guess is on the latter though).

All in all, I hope you're enjoying the diary thus far! Expect a few more 'pre-Episode' posts that continue to flesh out the environment that the DOA resides within (my own version of what the Cornellverse looks like, feels like, and reacts like). As the results grow closer to being done I'll certainly let you know.

Until then, Keep those predictions coming! That is, If you feel inclined to do so!

Cheers.

I see Matty as a champ maybe down the road but not now. I am looking forward to an extra 30 minutes. It seems you have some much talent and very little time to develop them. I know asked about PPV earlier, but do you at least see a blowout show say once a month or bi-monthly?

You could use the once off show to do that couldn't you?

Trevor

I've been kicking around the idea of either possibility actually. With PPV, There would have to be a reason why the Arcadia Network would allow one of their own programs show the biggest show of the month on another platform; ie. Losing potential ratings (which is, all together, what the Network is looking for). It could be remedied with either A) a strong relationship between the Network and a PPV network that have done business in the past, or B) The Network creates their own PPV network in which to capitalize on the new flux of PPV entertainment.

The monthly "Blow-out" TV Event seems most easiest to sell as it wouldn't be having to forge a new relationship with a PPV network (maybe defeating the whole TV show look for the DOA). That's something I'll have to continue to look forward to.

Thus far, I've been booking the show as if it were a legit weekly TV show. Not so much a Pro Wrestling event versus a scripted weekly TV event. So, in a way, stories grow over time & die in time. There's no real "blow-out" shows but more or less "blow-out" moments. This way, no TV show feels like it's just in place to promote the final event of the month. ya know? Sometimes, When you're looking forward to the PPV, the shows before that PPV turn out to be just fluff. This way, with a focus on the DOA being a weekly TV Show, there's no letdown what so ever. Each show is treated like a gigantic event, a PPV in itself really.

So, I'm not sure what I will do (if anything actually). I really like the layout right now but I do understand that it may be harder for the reader to keep up if there isn't a PPV event being promoted in advance. Plus, the PPV revenue would certainly be nice. ha.

Given that they are a network, they are probably an affiliate of a larger entertainment group, and thus may already have a pay per view company under that umbrella. As for why they would do a pay per view special , that would be for cash.

But there is another solution. WWE used to have the Saturday Night Main Events on regular tv, but they were close to ppv quality cards. Arcadia could hype and run one of those every couple months as an extra 'super show', and in game you could do it as a ppv or just as a longer regular event show.

Yea, the ultimate acceptance for allowing an Arcadia product be shown on another platform (ie: PPV) would certainly come down to Profit. If they can foresee a hefty financial return (with the DOA being their TV show; they reap all the 'profits'. Can then decide to either A) Keep it, B) re-invest it back into the DOA, or C) use that gained profit to help other Network shows, in the end.

I do like the idea of a "Saturday Night Main Event" idea every once in awhile. Not monthly, maybe not even every other month; however, only when it seems like there's a need for it. In that way, I COULD create a PPV company affiliated with the Arcadia Network that would ultimately show such an event. This way, if the PPV company is affiliated with the Network, the Network would be able to realistically feel comfortable with the decision as the profits would come solely to them. This would also allow me to book some "super-cards" if you will.

Hm. I guess I do like the idea.

That being said, if such an event were to transpire.... It wouldn't be very frequent as I want to keep the main focus on the fact that the DOA is more of a TV show than a wrestling promotion independent of the Arcadia Network. In the end, though, it could be a cool thing to develop down the line.
