Why did the Yankees think that it was a good idea to bring Javier Vazquez back? I mean it has already been proven that he cannot pitch in New York, and yes there are certain players that cannot play in New York (Nolan Ryan being the biggest name player who could not). So why bring him back?

kinda of why did people bring edgar renteria to the AL, he couldn't hit AL pitching and that was proven in interleag. play

Thoughts on the Playoffs?

I think Phillies vs. Rays is probably going to be the World Series this year. That being said I would rather see a re-match of last year Yankees vs. Phillies.

I just did not like what I saw of the Yankees over the past couple of weeks.

St. Louis finished fourth in attendance behind New York, Philly and LAD.

That means Chicago's teams, The LA Angels, Boston and the Mets are WAY bigger city and metro wise than the Cards and its sad that even if their teams aren't great their not showing up to the ball park. Especially Boston, LA and the NYM these teams were (for the most part) contenders.

Just to recap New York, Chicago, LA, Houston, San Diego, Detroit, Boston, San Fran are ALL larger city and metro areas than the Cards and yet we still out attendance them.

Even in 2008 when we had just came off of a horrible 2007 we still ranked fourth. Its nice to know that St. Louis is indeed one of (if not the) best baseball town in America. The lowest we have been this whole decade is 8th in total attendance in like 03. In 05 and 06 we were third and since 07 we have been fourth in the entire league. With the only cities beating us out are cities such as LA and New York which well over.

We're ranked 52nd on the list of most populated Cities in the United States with towns like El Paso having more population than us. I'd say being no lower than eighth and as high as third and fourth most of the decade is pretty damn impressive.

Well Fenway is one of the smallest Parks in the majors (it might even be the smallest park). They seem to sell out almost every game that I watch (and I watch most of their games because besides the Braves on TBS, the Red Sox are the only team I can watch on a regular basis.). If anything there overall attendance number must be because Fenway holds like 37,000+ while most of the other parks hold much more.

The area around Fenway on a game night is just awful.

All the teams you pointed out had a couple things in common though.

1) Most of those cities have struggling econ.

2) Half of them were losing teams

Now that is taking nothing away from the Cards. You guys have a loyal fan base and the fact that you support only 3 of the 4 big sports helps. Rams aren't as big in the community as the Cards because of the time served there. The Cards have been a very successful franchise for over what 40 years now. The fans are loyal and you have great talent, just a down year with injuries. To me the Cards are the Colts of MLB. They have the best player in his prime with other very talented players as well. They wont win the World Series every year, but will always (as long as Albert is there) be a contender.

I know they have struggling econs but come on St. Louis isn't bathing in cash. My point was St. Louis has less than a million people in its metro area while NYC and LA have what nearly TEN million in their metro area.

The Mets although a losing club this year have been built (poorly) to contend. They just went out and got Jason Bay for Holliday cash and I just don't see them getting the attendance I thought they would in NYC.

I think its more or less shock on my behalf I hear so many times we're a mid market team etc etc but what does that really mean when you're fourth in attendance? Sure television deals might not be as lucrative but when you're pulling in the third and fourth most amount of fans in the league with a state of the art nearly brand new stadium they can't really say "mid market team".

With Pujols contract coming up there is a lot of talk on how we can afford to pay him his 30 million a year, give Holliday his 15 or more a year and still keep the budget at around a 100 million. Not too mention Wainwright, Carp, Lohse all have ten million dollar plus contracts.

So once you add in our two aces, our two star hitters, our catcher and a failed pitching idea you don't have a lot of room left to improve the bullpen, bench, middle infield and outfield. So everyone is just trying to figure out why our budget is set at 100 mililon and not more like management promised when the new stadium was built.

Now I understand that they got a loan for the stadium and they had planned on a Ballpark Village (shopping center outside the stadium) and some other things that have them taking a bigger hit money wise than most fans realize but at the end of the day if they don't increase payroll they won't be able to bring in anyone new and or won't resign Pujols and truly the second isn't an option its just not.

No team scares me because I am not getting paid to play against them.:D I am not one of those "us" or "we" fans. I still would not count the Devil Rays (Come on Devil Rays is much cooler than Rays. I mean what are they now named after Ray Charles?) out. I would hope they would wake up and remember that they are the Devil Rays.

To answer your question though, I think it is a matter of if the Yankees get starting pitching. If they can get good starting pitching, I do not see why they cannot make it to the World Series.

I'd consider the Yankees the favorites against the Rangers, assuming both teams finish the job in their current series. But if Cliff Lee can pitch lights out (and out-duel CC, if they're matched up against each other,) anything's possible.

In any event, I REALLY hope we don't get a NY/Philly World Series for the 2nd straight year. I can never root for the Yanks, and I'm still bitter towards the Phils for knocking out my favorite team, the Dodgers, 2 straight years.
